Hello, you lovely lot, and welcome back to The Ins and Outs with myself, Jojo, and the very lovely Pollyanna.
This is a very special Agony Aunt Speedfire Round episode.
We will be answering a whole heap of questions that you've been sending in over the past few weeks
and firing back answers as quick as we possibly can for you.
So it's going to be a very useful one, and I hope you enjoy it.
Buckle in.
Hello there darling, how are you? I'm so well. I am busy, busy, busy but happy as a clam. How about you friend?
Pal, I'm brilliant. No complaints here. I am all as well.
Thank you so much for asking.
Well, rather than getting into a big old deep dive into what we've been up to,
we've got such an epic backlog of questions that I propose we dive straight in and we go speed round edition.
Yes.
And just quick and dirty.
Oh, I like that.
Yeah, this is the zero waffle edition answer your
questions and actually i'm going to just um step in here quickly just to say that we have been
absolutely overwhelmed with questions and outpouring of love from you guys and so again i
know we've said it so many times before but thank you so much for all your support and all your love
on this podcast i can't quite believe we are still
here doing what we do and what doing what we love um and it's all because of you guys so thank you
so much keep the questions coming um and all your feedback we love the questions and i love love love
the messages from everyone it's lovely it's it's really special it's lovely connecting with you all
so all right enough of that sentimentality let's do some questions okay so here's the rules of the game jojo this is this is quick and dirty these
are quick answers we're going to do as many questions as we can okay gosh challenge challenge
annika accepted this is hard for us because we're such wafflers there's no waffling okay all right
let's go come on go go go go can ceiling fans ever be sexy i need a
good looking one from yes our haunch home i absolutely think ceiling fans can be sexy
yes i wouldn't ever go with something sort of modern but i think they're lovely the only the
only thing is if you i would say about ceiling fans don't get one that has a light in it because
they tend to look really naff i don't i don they look a bit sort of, actually I say naff, they look quite sort of dated.
It's very hard to find nice ceiling fans with a light in.
What's a nice material for a ceiling fan, pal?
Oh, I wouldn't.
I would go like a nice sort of walnut.
Yeah.
Like a dark, yeah, dark.
Dark walnut, no lights.
Yes.
But obviously you're going to need light elsewhere because you might be replacing your central
pendant with a ceiling fan.
But I think they're lovely. Love them.
Okay. Next. This is from Boise Boys.
Light sockets. Is non-white a better investment?
So if it's a light switch, then I would say it's on show.
And that's where you want to put your money into buying something nice.
I don't like white plastic light switches.
And that's where you want to put your money into buying something nice.
I don't like white plastic light switches.
So, yes, I would say go with something like a nice bronze antique brass or a colour, if you like.
However, on sockets, if she's talking about sockets, then I would say really think about where you're putting your furniture.
So if you've got a chest of drawers going in front of a socket, there is absolutely no point in spending money on a fancy socket that might set you back you know 30 40 quid even 100 quid you're better off just leaving a white plastic
20p socket there that if you're never going to see it just so really think about where you're
putting your furniture because that's a huge cost saving don't just think when you're doing a
renovation or that you just replace all of the sockets are low level in your whole house or
something that's you know as you say 100 quid just go cheap white plastic and it's got a bit of furniture in front of it good tip my
friend next up this is from christy is a grouted tile boot room impractical my boyfriend thinks it
will be hard to clean grout will always get dirty i'm not going to sit here and pretend that it
won't it will and that's why it's the color of the grout that you choose that is the consideration
so you don't want to go with a white grout on the floor or even on the walls.
You want to go with something that's as close to the tile as possible.
So just consider the tile grout that you're using.
I love this.
Even if you're going white, go with something like a moon white.
It's lovely.
I think it's Mapai moon white.
But yes, it will get a bit dirty, but that's okay.
It's a boot room.
It's a mudroom.
It's going to get dirty. That's fine that it gets a bit dirty, but that's okay. It's a boot room. It's a mudroom. It's going to get dirty.
That's fine that it gets a bit dirty.
So don't worry about that.
And you can, you know, every year give the grout a clean.
There is such a thing as grout cleaner.
Sorry, stupid question, but what else would you use in a boot room if you weren't using tiles with grout?
Wood, I suppose.
But even wood will get scratched and damaged over time.
So it's a boot room, guys.
It's going to get dirty.
Terracotta, those lovely sort of terracotta-y bricks
are very popular in boot rooms at the moment as well.
What colour grout would you do with them?
They are, but just be very conscious that they,
and we warn our clients of this, they do get dirty.
Don't forget, they're very open.
They're very porous.
If you're going in and out with dirty, muddy boots
when you're cleaning them, they do get dirty looking.
But I love that look.
That's part of the charm of things. You've got to think about these things guys that something
that's old like brick you know tumble stone it's going to look dirty over time but that's part of
the charm get over it at a boot room that's it yeah that's it will I regret painting my walls
dark chocolate now that it is spring and that's from sally so don't forget dark chocolate
chocolates are very of the moment and they've been hanging around now this trend has been
hanging around for quite a few quite a few i show them in a second two three years now yeah um and
therefore don't think it's sort of going anywhere necessarily but i would say that we are in this
lovely sort of uh hibernation mode at the moment We're coming out soon and going into spring and summer.
It's going to get very bright, very light.
And actually you might find that you want to hold out
until after the summer to paint something brown.
Don't forget as well, if you are going to go for it
and you do want to go for it,
I would say just really consider the brown
that you're going to use and which way that room faces.
If it's a south-facing room,
think about what that brown is going to do when you way that room faces if it's a south-facing room think about what that
brown is going to do when you've got sun proper sunshine shining on it because it's going to turn
a very different color to what it might look like on a moody day okay this is from adam hey jojo and
polly a question from an innie despite being very much an outie yes adam tub chairs for the bedroom
yay or nay yes absolutely a tub chair is great because it's small and it's compact.
The backrest of a tub chair sort of slopes
into the armrests, I guess.
It sort of creates a sort of semicircle
and therefore it's a really nice place to sort of sit
with your arms sort of next to you,
but a bit of a ponderer.
They're sometimes called easy chairs or barrel chairs.
Do you know what, Jojo?
I have to add to this question
because Adam wrote a longer question.
I cut it down for the speed round, but's amusing so yay or nay sprucing up the house to sell and
wife wants to declutter but at the same time give an impression of space and luxury is she right
of course she's right she's my wife but you have to ask don't you yes your wife is always right
yeah um a chair and a bedroom is always a great place to throw clothes as well so there that's a win um but yes tub chairs barrel chairs they're great they offer they have a sort of deep seat
that offers a sort of level of comfort so you can sink into it great for a bedroom yes love that
next up my friend we've got a question from stephanie do you have any tips when building
a house on how to hide kids toys basket this is my number is my number one thought, but obviously if you're building,
if you're starting from scratch, then I would say build in a sort of media unit
and the lower half of the media unit, either have little cupboards with baskets in
that you can chuck all your toys in and close the doors on,
or actually just have an open-fronted media unit where the lower half is lovely big baskets
that you can just pull out and bubble your stuff in, get the kids to do it.
That's what I do.
Because the baskets can basically be like a decoration in their own if you have a nice one
not like a bright yellow box from Ikea I know this sounds might sound obvious but do think about
the basket that's fitting in the hole sometimes people build the media unit and then they go out
looking for the basket and they can't find the right thing to fit in said hole so you know you
don't want to piddle through the basket. You want it to really fill that cavity.
Elizabeth, what tiles to use in the inside of a fireplace?
Oh, so many, so many options.
I'd always go with something natural.
You want to consider that it's going to get very hot.
So go with like a lovely bluestone or limestone.
I wouldn't say go porcelain.
Go with something hardy
because obviously if it is an open fire
or even if it's not an open fire
and it's a log burner,
occasionally you're going to get bits of coal
or whatever coming out
and that can be very black and very staining.
So make sure that it's quite hard wearing
whatever it is.
Yeah, but I would say like a lovely tumbled stone
of some sort.
This is from Tori Treetops, the tongue twister. Yeah, but I would say like a lovely tumbled stone of some sort.
This is from Tori Treetops, the tongue twister.
What is the best paint finish for high use areas?
Hi, Tori.
I recognise your name actually from Instagram.
I do.
I do too. Hi.
Hi, Tori.
Basically emulsion, the sort of 5% sheen emulsion is something you put on a wall that you never touch
because if you wipe it with a wet cloth, the paint will actually come off on the cloth so what you want to go with is almost
something like you'd use in a bathroom but with a low sheen different paint companies offer a
different sheen levels essential the walls if it's going to be a high traffic area you want to put
almost like an eggshell it's what you would put on woodwork um but just look at the sheen level
you don't want like a shiny i'm going to say gloss no one really does gloss paints anymore unless it's what you're really looking for.
But it's probably a 20% sheen, I would say,
that you want to have on an eggshell that would go on a wall.
Or an intelligent emulsion.
But check with your paint supplier because they do massively vary
depending on the suppliers.
You're an intelligent emulsion.
You are. Stop it.
One from Nick.
What's the best height and position for lighting in a hall and stairs?
In a hall and stairs?
So if we're talking about wall lights, I would say we tend to go around 1.8, 1.75.
1.75 centimetres, essentially, is where you want the centre of your wall light to be.
As a general rule of thumb, that's a wall light.
If you're going with a picture light, it wants to go obviously up a bit higher what about on stairs is that the same true on stairs
you sort of measure it from the stair that it's aligned from the stair that you're standing on
yeah and then going up it's probably going to be a little bit lower and obviously you just want to
also be considerate if the center of the light is say 1.75 centimeters you want to think about
if you're light fitting it it might have an arm that
goes up and it might have a line arm that goes down. So it might need to be that you kind of
shift it up or down a little. So I'd say find the light fitting first before you just bring that out
into the wall. I'm learning so much right now so quickly. Quickfire round. Gosh, I'm exhausted.
There's more. Okay okay go on okay rumble
sticks great name rumble sticks wants to know underfloor heating is it worth it from an eco
perspective and should they go water or electric okay so uh wet underfloor heating systems of
running off your mains essentially are more expensive to put down so they're much more
expensive to install in the first place but in the long run they're cheaper to run okay electric is much cheaper to put down they're thinner so
they're great if you have limited floor build up yes um and they are thinner because they're
essentially like pads of course but they so they're cheaper to install but they're much more
expensive to run obviously because you're running on an electric on your electric bill so you can
imagine your electric meter is going to go.
So arguably, if you can, it's better to invest in the water.
If you're starting from scratch, go with water, definitely.
The other thing that's great about water is that if you're going to, I'm just talking really sort of out there here now.
If you're going with an air source or ground source heat pump, that will be a great thing to get linked up when you've've got wet underfloor heating system and then you can potentially you know really reduce your bills
so yes i'd say i i would always encourage people to go with wet if they can but if you can't
electric it's good just please turn the goddamn thing off or put it on a some sort of a you know
a daily timer because otherwise your bills will be through the blooming roof.

okay i've got a good one i don't have a name hey polly and jojo oh okay it's a long question but
it's worth it i can't explain how much i love listening to you two on the pod i wish i was
part of your girl gang you are part oh you are you are you all are i'm actually an outie a garden
designer but love interiors too and feel much less confident about that than the exterior yeah me too babes so it's questions for jojo
what is your opinion or strategy for stuff like decorative objects or plants on windowsills
oh don't like them oh okay yep i've got a real strong dislike for things on windowsills. I see a window as like a, imagine like an opening of an eye.
It wants to be open and like you're looking out your beautiful garden.
When you suddenly clutter it with crap, like little picture frames and pots and things,
it just feels so over cluttered.
I just think your windows is where the light comes in and it's this vista that you're looking at it's like a picture frame
yeah it would be like sticking things all over a picture frame for me that is it's a no sorry i i
tend to don't like you'd actually if you if you have got a window so it's covered in stuff just
a little test for you take everything off and take a step back and tell me
it doesn't look better well that's easy okay right um quick fire outies for you poll here we go let's
go let's go let's go bring it how do i hide a football net in a garden from sarah hey sarah
this is the scourge of my life you've got two options no three first of all you can paint the
football net black if it has to be really visible paint it black or buy one that's black.
I know it sounds a faff, but it's amazing how different it is when it's black.
It recedes as opposed to pops out white, really brings the eye.
Number two, you don't actually have to have a plastic football net.
You can make one out of really beautiful, like an oak frame.
And that way you can add a net to it when you want it.
But when not, it can just be more of a decorative feature.
So sometimes we'll do something which looks like something in its own right, but it's actually also a football net.
And number three would be, if you can, and this is really only if you're starting from scratch,
is put the football lawn further away from the house and get hedging in front so that it's a separate room.
That's not always possible. So paint it, make it out of something organic or hide it by moving it
further away great next one what should i plant in front of hydrangeas for year-round interest
and this is rose i mean the go-to i will always plant hackanukla underneath hydrangeas it's a
grass it's green for six months of the year then it turns brown and it stays that way until you
cut it down and the brown is really pretty it's really rustly months of the year, then it turns brown and it stays that way until you cut it down. And the brown is really pretty. It's really rustly.
I love the noise it makes, as long as you can embrace the fact that it's brown, which you should.
And then it gets cut down in February and it will be back again in sort of May.
So for me, it's a beautiful way of hiding the feet of hydrangeas.
They work, they're sort of perfect partners.
I do also like geranium rosanne, but that's not year round.
So, how can I clover super thanks paul next up we've got when can i move plants about or do i
wait until spring from kesa i mean unless your ground is covered in snow frozen solid or completely
waterlogged now's a great time to do it any time from now until april you can start moving things
get this question a lot and what i'd say is it's really hard to move big, mature plants.
So sometimes someone will say,
I want to move a massive, great shrub
that's been there 20 years.
That's going to be tough at any time.
And you can try digging a really, really big root ball
around it and moving it.
But the more mature a plant is,
the harder it's going to be to move.
So really, I try and stick to moving
plants which are you know haven't been in the ground for too many years this is brilliant we're
really flying through these okay next up this is from Alice what are your thoughts on glass
balustrades glass balustrades I really think they have their place because one of the things I feel
very passionate about with gardens is I don't want to lock you off from your space one of the biggest
challenges if your house is much taller,
for example, than your garden
is that you need to be able to safely move around in it.
So balustrades are essential,
but I don't always want you feeling
like you can't see out into the garden.
So I'm very open-minded to them.
I like, personally, I like a glass balustrade.
Sometimes the frameless ones work
in more contemporary
schemes but if you have to use one in something a little bit more rural then I prefer it when it's
got a timber post between it just makes it feel slightly more natural so I think they have their
place I would always rather it was a stone balustrade or or something maybe with wires if
need be or really beautiful brick wall but there are times where it's a great shame
to block off your view so in the right setting I'm okay with them. We actually specify them we've had
to in the past and actually we did a hotel down on the Devon coast and it was the only thing we
could have used because it gets very windy and when you're sitting on the balconies it actually
does protect from the wind as well. It protects from the wind but it also allows there are times where it would
be absolutely criminal to block off a view so to me you know it's it's necessary where if you've
bought a house for a stunning view you want to be able to see it i can't stand them when they've got
chrome handrail though i'm with chrome handrail i with you. Okay, next up we've got where to plant lavender.
I always forget from muddy champagne.
Plant lavender in sunny spots.
That's your answer.
Super quick.
Don't put it in shade.
It'll be miserable.
Plant it where it's sunny and preferably with soil that's not very, very, very heavy clay and gets very waterlogged.
It's Mediterranean plants.
It likes Mediterranean conditions.
All round sun or could it have like half and half? It needs at least six hours but really the sunnier the better. Don't go putting it somewhere where it's going to be in shade half the
day. Hence all my lavender's died. Okay next up we've got from Sinead. Best cutting flowers that
you can still plant for beautiful vases in the summer? Sinead this is going to be a frustrating
answer but if you wait a couple of weeks we might be releasing something which is going to answer all of those
questions for you. So there's a there's a guide coming which is going to solve all those problems
for you in the fullness of time. Stick around girl. Stick around. Next up I have a long narrow
garden and I need to put in a shed. Where do I put so it's not a focal point Debbie hey Debbie so I'm going to assume that we can't tuck it around the side of the house
somewhere because that would always be my first choice so if you have a long narrow garden my
answer is put it all the way at the end and then you're going to make yourself a false boundary
of a hedge in front of it does that does that make sense so essentially you're going to hand over the final piece of your garden to the shed by putting a hedge in front of it does that does that make sense so essentially you're going to hand over the final
piece of your garden to the shed by putting a hedge in front of it and then bringing planting
in front of it or any other elements you might want you might want a seating area down there
whatever the point being that we want to give you plenty to look at and then a hedge so that you
don't see that shed paint that shed dark so that it's not like a little white shining beacon at
the end of the garden but if you've got long narrow you don't have a choice it's it's a case of it will only
be a focal point if you don't hide it okay i've got one here from spicy 80 spicy 80 is asking
what's the best work surface for an outdoor kitchen yeah we use deckton quite a lot so that
is it's a stone it's it's really compacted stone it's sort of a mix up of things but basically it
makes it a really easy, cleanable surface.
So have a good look at Dekton.
It comes in loads of different colours.
Right, I've got one here from Rachel.
Good outdoor furniture, which doesn't require me to take out a mortgage.
Huh.
Well, I mean, much like interiors, yeah, a lot of good furniture is really pricey.
But there are some nice options, I think, which are more affordable.
I would never describe them as cheap though,
because I think buying cheap furniture for the garden,
you will regret it.
It needs to sit outside all year round
or unless you're going to store it.
So it really needs to be robust.
So whilst I absolutely don't want to tell you
that you need to spend a fortune on it,
you can't go completely bargain basement.
But ones which I think are very fairly priced
and I have found to be good quality are garden trading.
We use that a lot in gardens
where the clients don't want to spend loads on it.
And I have a lot of garden trading furniture,
which is standing the test of time really well.
They often do really good discounts
at certain times of year as well.
So look out for them.
Can I ask, actually,
I'm going to chip in on the end of that one and when you've got wood furniture outside like presumably teak
yeah mainly as teak right how often do you need to treat wood furniture before it starts to sort of
look not great do you know i don't treat uh garden furniture i've never done that what we would do
if it's wood we invest in really good covers um if there is a garage or a storage
space that you can move furniture into for the winter it's a no-brainer that you should do so
because you know you don't want it sitting out in the winter if if you can avoid it but equally
there's plenty of places where there's just not the space and then what we would do particularly
with wood furniture i'll often lift it off the floor so put put it on bricks or something so
that the wood isn't sat on the floor and invest in a really really robust cover i'm not talking about something which is a suggestion of a cover it's fully
covered and it's raised and that's the best that you can do and then in terms of slightly more
designeries a couple that i love to use are hay which again it's not the cheapest but equally
it's nowhere near the most expensive but hey the palisade range i absolutely love you can see it
at the newt that's powder coated steel so you can leave that out all year round and that's going to be
absolutely fine and i think it's very chic quite minimalist works better in contemporary schemes
and then also fur mob which also do a lot of metal furniture which i i think can be very
chic that's sort of lovely in in town gardens too so those are a few good options and then the rungs start to go up but
I really do think if you can buy once and buy it well I was going to add on to that actually that
a bit like with upholstery and even beds just try and stretch yourself to invest in good quality
because otherwise two three years down the line you'll be wishing you did and you're going to end
up like what is it buy buy cheap buy twice by thrice even yeah and speaking of furniture in a garden it's
the thing which can make or break a design for us so we can do the most beautifully designed
garden in the world but if the furniture is gross yeah it's the thing you notice so it's really
really important and equally it can elevate a space which is quite ordinary so you don't have
to pay more than your mortgage on furniture but but stretch yourself as far as you can.
Okay, I've got one here from R. Corbett Crumble. Last one, Paul. Garden walkways, would you put on the sunny or shady side? Oh, that's a good question. on your garden but for me I always want the sunniest area in the garden to be the area which I'm either sitting in or planting in because I think you can have you can have a lot of fun with
with sun planting so and shade can often be trickier so my gut is saying I would always
rather put the path on the shady side so that you can have more open options for your sunny side
great super duper well done thanks that was fun that was a canter through a hell of a lot of questions
i like that that was really fun we should do more of those okay i hope that was useful everyone i
hope you enjoyed that a little in these and outies keep sending more questions we'll keep doing more
speed rounds more questions more speed rounds thank you this leads us on to the last section
of our podcast this week paul what is in and what's out what's in for you in for me is longer days can you feel it pal can you
feel oh that light feel it it's so good isn't it it's like a battery recharging feels like we're
just starting to come out of our little hibernation holes oh yeah we're a couple of bears crawling out
full of vigor to ferrets hibernate?
I don't know.
That's one to Google later.
Who knows?
Right.
What is out?
Do you know what's out?
My spring bulbs.
They're coming.
I'm going to do a bulb dance.

Spring is on the way.
Out she comes, the old bear.
Out she comes, the old bear. Out she comes. Green, the color of true elation. I need help making every day easier. So I switched to Google Pixel. It's a phone powered by Gemini, your personal AI assistant.
Gemini can help you summarize your unread emails, suggest what to make with the food
in your fridge, and it helped me achieve a family photo where everyone is smiling at
the camera.
I didn't think it was possible, but it is with Google Pixel 9.
