Starting point is 00:00:43 Hello Inns and Outies and welcome to this week's episode of the Inns and Outs with myself Jojo Barr and the very lovely Pollyanna Wilkinson. In this week's episode we're asking the question to breakfast or not to breakfast. I'm walking you through hard flooring, Polly's taking you out into the garden and telling you what you need to do in June, I'm talking runners on stairs and we're finding out a little bit about Polly's sex show in Nashville. So let's jump on in. Hello old girl. Hello my old girl. Didn't you get a hard time for saying that to me the other day? I got told off and it implied that it had misogynistic undertones and I thought oh no we call each other old girl I think it's okay I called you an old tart that's probably a bit more misogynistic
Starting point is 00:01:30 isn't it? You can call me whatever you bloody like as long as it's to my face not behind my back I think that's the key to banter and name calling don't you think? I'd call you an old tart behind your back as well as to your face. I think if I was actually an old tart you probably wouldn't call me an old tart I'd like to think maybe not anyway my old gal how are you darling catch me up what's been going on with you my love no I don't want to go first you go first how are you tell me everything that's happening in your life down to what you've had for breakfast what I have well I don't really do breakfast actually I'm not really a big breakfast eater I actually discovered that when you get into your 40s, your whole metabolism changes and the things that appeal to you before.
Starting point is 00:02:10 So you're not supposed to drink really cold. This is quite Ayurvedic sort of theory, but you shouldn't really drink really cold things in the morning. So like protein shakes or anything are actually not good at our age. They're supposed to be warm. So things like porridge. But I can't stomach food in the morning. I'm not really one for breakfast. And then I have to get to about 10 before I can eat something are you the same or
Starting point is 00:02:28 you were shoved a bit of toast down in the morning do you know what if I if I could I would eat from the moment I wake up but if I eat breakfast I am voraciously hungry for the rest of the day so the only way of holding back the tide of my complete gluttony is um just trying to wait as long as possible before I I break the hunger seal the fast I actually the break fast one of my favorite bits of breakfast is eating the crusts of the kids toast so what I do is I push the butter and the honey right up onto the crust and then I cut it off and that's I can have that that sort of keeps me going in the morning I quite enjoy that that'll make your hair curly pal those crusts it hasn't worked so far hasn't worked so far okay fine so I now know that you haven't had breakfast what else
Starting point is 00:03:14 apart from that in my riveting world well we're currently experiencing 50 days of rain aren't we apparently 50 50 days of rain consecutively is apparently what's going on at the moment so is it i had i had this has passed me by not the rain obviously that hasn't passed me by is that in the news yes oh and when has it just started or is it about to finish no it's i think it's just about started i think we've had i mean we've had quite a few days but already haven't we even if it's a light sprinkling we're gonna have 50 days of rain apparently so but i'm looking at my window now and it is rather beautiful it's lovely and sunny at the moment i'm actually off to bruges this afternoon are you what are you doing there i've never been to bruges tell me more i'm going on a work trip i'm actually i'm really excited i'm going with i'm going to meet a supplier
Starting point is 00:03:56 and i'm going with uh lizzie and rosie who were like they're my sort of my right and my left arms and we're off to bruges to a supplier sort of party. And they're going to show us around their warehouse. And we're going to have a little wander around Bruges. And so I'm really excited. I feel like I'm going on a girl's holiday. How fabulous. I mean, they probably don't.
Starting point is 00:04:15 They probably don't feel like that. They're bloody hell and going away with the boss. But for me, I'm like, oh, this is fun. Little trolley. Yeah, Bruges. I went to Bruges years ago with an ex-boyfriend. And, oh, actually, I think it was the ex-husband and it's an interesting place very interesting tell me more i don't i don't know much about it what's bruges famous for beer and and the film uh in bruges with uh what's his
Starting point is 00:04:39 name that guy what's his name the irish dark hair quite attractive andy colin farrell farrell colin farrell he was in the movie sure and of course all right rouge chocolate chocolate it's famous for chocolate oh well bring me some back are you what's the new book on your on your village book club oh my god do you know what i i actually missed our last book club so amongst amongst sort of organizing charity auctions and book clubs and releasing new paint ranges and you've got this new paint colors coming out which I'm absolutely busting at the seams about how exciting what colors are there because obviously you've got your whites well what's my what's our favorite color poll green green the color
Starting point is 00:05:20 yes that is that's our new paint range. Oh my gosh, you've got green paint colours. Three greens, my love. Oh my God, I know. I'm so excited. So excited about these. So I feel like my life's being made of this. I have to say, it's a real proud moment.
Starting point is 00:05:39 So that's happening. That's with our amazing friends at Coat. And actually, my floor is absolutely covered in paint because i had a photo shoot here yesterday with all the paints and we've just we've done a bit of a jackson pollock on the floor with all the three new greens and it's splattered all over the floor it's really cool i'll share it on the uh on the ins and outs page um and then of course the release of the tea store the tea store's back in a week's time i had to dab into a bit of old my sort of modeling they're back in the old modelling days, didn't I? Which is funny. Oh, I'd buy anything you wore. Felt a bit dusty, I have to say. Can I tell you a fun fact? Go on, my love. In my youth, I was a model,
Starting point is 00:06:15 but guess what I modelled in my youth? Guess. Tell me. Was it garden trowels? No, it was a quarry and a horse box. I beg your pardon? I was a model, a child model for a quarry and for a horse box. So can you explain, can we delve into this a bit more? What do you mean? I think it speaks for itself. How did you model that? How did you model a quarry? Well, you put a hard hat on and you go look at a quarry in wonder. And then they used my image of wondrous looking at quarries in their brochure. I think we need to see that picture.
Starting point is 00:06:48 I'll see if I can dig it out. And then the horse box, I think it was pyjamas. I think I was wearing pyjamas in a horse box, which in hindsight, I have some questions about. I'll ask my mum. Yes, I would. We're totally and utterly binge watching Nashville at the moment. Have you watched Nashville? I am obsessed.
Starting point is 00:07:05 I mean, yeah, I watched it when it came out like five years ago. I'm actually jealous that you've got that to watch so good. And speaking of Nashville. Don't tell me you're going. You're not going to Nashville. I am. Are you? Yeah, I am.
Starting point is 00:07:20 I'm so excited. Oh my God, that is amazing. I know. How come God, that is amazing. I know. How come? Always wanted to go. Well, we can thank Dr. Tara for this because on my mood board, I had a work section. Dr. Tara Swart. Yes.
Starting point is 00:07:36 I had a work section and then I had a sort of lifestyle section. And then I had a travel section because for me personally, is a massive priority in my life and it's something that I unapologetically try and fit in wherever possible and so I had two that I really wanted to do this year Nashville which I've always wanted to go to and Vietnam so I'm going to Nashville I very luckily fluked it and had some companion voucher flights thank you very much I'm ex for that so flying to Nashville I can hear is that the builders builders banging or is there somebody in your bedroom oh yeah no sorry it is it's the builders brickworks going up how amazing pal you're going to Nashville I've I cannot wait to hear what it's like I'm actually doing a double
Starting point is 00:08:21 hitter because I the the flights the companion flights were a week apart, quite a long time to spend in one city. So we're actually then going to pop over to New Orleans. Can I tell you the top three things I want to achieve when I'm there? Go on, tell me. I'd like to have a hat custom made, which obviously I will live in because when do I not wear cowboy hats? Who are we going with to Nashville? Mr Big. Mr Big okay just checking I think everyone was wondering so I felt like I'd need to ask. Do you know what one of the most the best things to do in Nashville I'm told is the equivalent of a magic mic show. Don't think you could really do that with Mr Big could you? Do you not think? No I don't think he might enjoy that very much. No. That's a shame.
Starting point is 00:09:06 No, I don't think... I've never been to one of those sex shows. It's not a sex show. Well, it's not a sex show. It's just a man throwing his torso around the stage. It's just sort of lunging. I've not been to the one in the UK either. I just don't think anything could ever beat that man. Actually, his dancing.
Starting point is 00:09:23 Old Channing Tatum. Old Snake Hips. Those those dance moves I tell you what well he choreographed the one in London didn't he I'm not being quite a few of my pals would be I actually went to I actually went to the premiere of that years ago and we were sort of three roads from the front and he obviously he came out and he literally walked straight past me I actually sort of got a whiff of him did he give you a little wink a little side eye no he didn't i think um no i think he was probably very disinterested in us but it was fun though because we're sitting in the premiere and uh so there he is in it we're in the crowd and we watch the premiere and just
Starting point is 00:09:59 before it starts all of these men that are actors planted around you know the um the seats in the cinema suddenly jump up out of their seats and start stripping and doing and sort of literally jumping on people and just giving it some of this oh it's so much fun yeah yeah get it get it so you don't think i can do that okay fine well i can't do that so we'll rule that one out rule that one out yeah sorry about that that's we could go to one in can't do that, so we'll rule that one out. Rule that one out. Yeah, sorry about that. We could go to one in London together. Well, maybe we should do an In's and Out's live at Magic Mike. We should just have a meet and greet with all our In's and Out's.
Starting point is 00:10:34 Come on, gals. We'll all go. Yeah. They won't know what hit them. We'll all bring our trowels. And our golden spades. And our horry horries. No, not the horry horries.
Starting point is 00:10:45 That could be seen as aggressive. I'll bring my measuring tape tape i'll be sitting in the front row with my measuring tape come on boys oh right sorry i completely digress right number one make a hat number one make a hat number two i want to learn to line dance they do lessons oh yes yeah which i'm very excited about and i want to go to all the speakeasies and then in new orleans i'm going to go and have a a ben ben yet ben yet ben yay the little biscuity kinky thing ben ben yay ben yay from cafe Monde is that it Ben yeah stop laughing at me oh there's drilling now now I can hear drilling yeah I am sorry it's very it's it's very noisy
Starting point is 00:11:39 okay so that's amazing so you're going to Nashville you do jammy jammy god I feel like you're always going away and doing fabulous things what's going on at the house garden office what's happening you've probably put the house in the market you're moving somewhere else now and you're developing that are you our house is built i've moved in i'm bored of it i'm on to the next um you know uh no the i'm looking at the moment the doors are being formed in timber and they're doing all of the brick work at the moment. Hence, that's what's all the sort of drilling and cutting and things you can hear. So, and that's flying up. So, that's great.
Starting point is 00:12:09 And then yesterday, I had a little meeting with House Nine. Oh, yes, you did. With the lovely Lizzie and Katie. Listeners, I did something absolutely unacceptable. And I told the team that I wanted carpet upstairs in their faces. They're like, are you sure? Are you sure? No, they're not judgy about carpet upstairs. We're not judgy. And I was like, I'm sure I want carpet. We're not that judgy about carpet upstairs. We accept carpet in bedrooms. No, to be fair, they did defend the carpet in the other bedrooms. It was mine because I'm having a
Starting point is 00:12:42 wooden staircase. And her reasoning was it's better if it's a wooden staircase wooden hallway wooden bedroom and I understand her logic yes I'm just not sure my bank balance understands the logic so um yes we'll see but they were brilliant I'm so excited and they told me I was a very easy client well let's see about that shall we let's see what do they say about working with friends? Let me be the judge of that. Yes, hence I'm not working with you. Hence I passed it to Lizzie and Katie. Very wise. Very wise.
Starting point is 00:13:16 Do you know what, pal? Now we're talking about your wood floor and we're very much on hard finishes, aren't we? So I think we should delve into this a little bit on this podcast because they very much hold hands, ins and outs, we know. And one of the very, very first things that we do early on in a renovation is selection of hard materials. And it's one of the first things that the contractor needs to know as well. So before you start looking at paint colours and fabrics and all that sort of fun stuff,
Starting point is 00:13:47 you need to look at your hard finishes. It's really, really important to consider what is going on all your floors and all your walls. And really actually like the materiality that you want to use. Tell everyone about the issue that you had with your flooring in your kitchen. Because these are quite interesting when you buy certain houses come on basically the parquet that i have in my house is sealed to the floor with bitumen which is how they used to do it in the old days i understand and the bitumen was my damp proof course so and and then it was pure concrete so the expectation was that there was more of a build up under that so that I would be able to put in underfloor heating.
Starting point is 00:14:28 And because it's an extension, so the floor will be running from something which is existing to something new. I don't fully understand, but they basically said I can't have underfloor heating because this without it being extremely expensive, having to dig out all the old floor and start again which cost-wise we hadn't anticipated we have found a solution in terms of sort of routing out the floor which is going to be onerous and means i will be sacrificing my living room this week so i'm up in the bedrooms from now on until christmas that's gonna be a noisy job as well does that mean that you can have wood floor in your kitchen no there's not enough depth i can only have um stone which actually you know we we talked about this didn't we because it's going to be such a sunny room with so much glazing limestone feels
Starting point is 00:15:17 like the right choice in terms of fading as well so actually it's a sort of happy accident and funnily enough literally yesterday the builders came in and said we need to know the depth of your floor tile now and I thought okay this is exactly why we need to you need to plan ahead are they okay with the thickness of limestone yes they're not going to turn around and say no you need porcelain are they no they are not and they will get a uh a squinty side eye from me if they say that to me so I'm going to use I think I think I might actually run the same limestone outside I wasn't planning on but I like it so much that I think I might oh oh my gosh how exciting have you used it outside before is this one of our recommendations I haven't used this one outside before no so it'll be a bit an experiment which I prefer to
Starting point is 00:16:03 experiment with my own house than my clients. It's definitely worth saying anyone that's looking at, you know, changing out their floors or a new renovation, don't feel that you are restricted to just stone and wood. You know, you can really mix up your materials using clever thresholds, which I know I talk about a lot. But what else can you use? Teach me. As you enter into a pantry or a boot room or a utility, switch it it we'll switch it up so you can go from wood floor in your kitchen and if you still like the look of that sort of you know slightly hard more boot room mudroom vibe you can then go with a you can go with a really interesting little Moroccan tile or you could go with something like a terracotta or you could go with a nice little tumbled limestone cobble um so as long
Starting point is 00:16:41 as you've got a threshold at a door even if it doesn't have a door on it you can still have a different you know change in change in materiality it's quite fun I think when you enter into another little room like a utility or boot room do you know what that surprises me yeah you want to create a little interest because with so listeners with my house I've got a kitchen with a little utility room a a little pantry off it. And so, Jojo, my assumption was we were going to do the same throughout. So they all sort of felt like the same space, but just sort of divided by walls. But now I'm wondering if we're not going to do that.
Starting point is 00:17:16 No, no. We don't tend to do... If there's a kitchen with a utility room and it's got a door between, or in a pantry, we'll tend to change the floor type in those rooms just because you want to walk in and be like oh this is fun that's a bit different okay so it'll be the same thickness of whatever it is it won't be any thicker than your limestone because we want to keep the levels the same you've got to be really careful and consider it when you're going from one level to another you don't want to have a step even a little ramp is something you can trip on so we want to avoid trip hazards wherever possible when walking from one room to another is there ever a world where you do sort of make it so it's all the same thing with just sort of walls dividing or or no yes we we do it very much depends on the house the character of the house
Starting point is 00:17:56 the architectural things going on around the house and the brief and all sorts of different things every Every house is different. Every project is different. Breaking news happens anywhere, anytime. Police have warned the protesters repeatedly, get back. CBC News brings the story to you as it happens. Hundreds of wildfires are burning. Be the first to know what's going on and what that means for you and for Canadians. This situation has changed very quickly.
Starting point is 00:18:27 Helping make sense of the world when it matters most. Stay in the know. CBC News. Next question, just to make it all about me. I'm having wood stairs at house nine recommendation but I'm going to do carpet upstairs therefore if you're having wood stairs and carpet above do you have to do a runner on the stairs so that it makes sense rather than it being like tile on the floor then wood stairs then carpet absolutely not oh to be honest if you've got lovely wood stairs beautiful timber stairs treads the only reason you really need a runner, you don't really want to go covering up those wooden stairs. If you've got a lovely banister in it, you actually don't want to really cover up the timber. I think a lot of people put runners down if they, for instance, got small, very small children because they worry about kids flying up and down stairs with socks on and you can slip.
Starting point is 00:19:23 worry about kids flying up and down stairs with socks on and you can slip people also quite people are quite attached to the idea of carpets they feel like it's a soft element that that people feel like they like in their homes it's almost getting them out of that kind of feeling so when you have a lovely wood floor on your stairs i would tend to say wait before putting a runner down and see if you like it because you can always add a runner to a staircase don't just jump into you know putting a runner down for the sake of it because I think it's you want to see the beauty of a wooden timber staircase okay good tip thank you for that pal well look we've got time for a couple of questions should we do just a couple okay got an outy question here from Sophie Sophie's wondering what jobs should I be doing out in the garden in June? That's a very all-round good question. That is a good question and it's a busy month. Although I'm noticing that most things seem to be a bit behind because usually by June I'd be
Starting point is 00:20:15 saying oh start picking your sweet peas but my sweet peas are about you know knee high and not really doing anything yet so just feel like everything is really taking a while to wake up this year um but June is the time when I start to sew biennials so things like fox gloves for example which have been flowering and now gone over when you see that they're starting to go over and going to seed if you think about it that means that the seed is dropping in nature and it's sowing itself so to speak so now is the time to get biennials which put on leaf this year and then flower next year so an annual flowers the same year and a biennial the following year so things like wallflowers or fox gloves or honesty
Starting point is 00:20:59 those are all things that I would start to sow now and Towards the end of the month, you need to, if you have any apples or pears in your garden, you need to be reducing the clusters of fruit. So usually there's sort of a big old cluster per branch. You need to be getting them down to sort of two to three apples in a cluster, because if you've got loads for one, it can snap the branches, but two, it means that there's far too many and you're going to get loads of tiny little apples rather than fewer nice, big, juicy ones. So go around and reduce them if you have them. Make sure if you haven't done the Chelsea chop on things like your sedums and nepetas, now's a great time to do it. And I get lots of anxious messages saying, should I do this even if they're in flower?
Starting point is 00:21:43 The answer is yes. Don't worry about it. Cut the flowers off. Shove them in a vase. You're going to get more flowers. And then as we talked about last time, now's the time to prune any topiary you have as well. So things like buxus or taxus, box or you. Those are the things you need to be doing now.
Starting point is 00:22:00 Lovely. Thanks, Paul. You're welcome. Okay, Jojo, I've got one from Meg. Quick any question. We're converting a chapel into i've got one from meg quick any question we're converting a chapel into our home and have some beautiful windows but they're proving difficult to manage privacy we don't want to flash the neighbors and many walkers we have in the area but we also don't want to ruin the view of the windows from the outside of the property
Starting point is 00:22:15 we spent a lot of money to have these beautiful windows and don't want to detract from them we tried cafe curtains but from outside they just don't work we've considered shutters but i'm concerned they're a bit twee the windows are very long and narrow and in some rooms the creation of the room have left us with small floor level windows help any ideas any really beautiful feature windows you you really don't want to cover up the window is the ultimate feature so this is where you really have to think about the curtains or the window dressings don't want to detract in in style at all to the window so putting something like shutters on a chapel window is going to look bizarre putting a cafe curtain on a chapel window it just wouldn't look right it's not something you would ever have so the only way really around this is to consider that what you
Starting point is 00:23:01 choose really just wants to be a very very simple curtain that almost blends with the wall so that the curtain isn't the one that's overtaking, it's not overtaking the window. So it serves a purpose. It's there for functionality reasons, but it's not going to detract from the beauty of the window itself. So really, if you really need a curtain for privacy, which is likely to be then just a sheer, so you don't need anything like a lined or blackout, which is going to be heavy, and it's obviously going to be a lot thicker, and you're going to need more material. If it's just a sheer linen, go with something really, really soft, like a lovely sort of slubby linen, and something that's just going to be very similar to your wall colours, that it's not going
Starting point is 00:23:42 to, you almost don't want to see it. And then when it's closed, it's obviously going to be very similar to your wall color so that it's not going to you almost don't want to see it and then when it's closed it's obviously going to serve its purpose but then when it's you know pulled back it's just uh you know sort of hanging there and you hopefully won't really notice it the window is the thing that's sort of doing the doing the talking love that okay um i've got one from lucy hi jojo and any question i'm converting a bedroom to a walk-in wardrobe fitted with cupboards and drawers but should i put doors on the front or leave it open? To be honest, it depends on you and how you live and if you're a messy bugger or not. It's a bit like having, you know, an organised pantry. If you're the sort of person that's going to actually hang your clothes up and put them in, you know, colour-coordinated order, then great, leave the doors off.
Starting point is 00:24:25 But if you're realistically not going to keep that wardrobe looking pretty good, I think it will actually stress you out. The reason we put doors on wardrobes is because they're usually a bit of a mess and you don't want to have to constantly be sorting your wardrobe out every day. So it's a very personal one that I would say. I think if the wardrobe is slightly set back and you don't see it from your bed bed obviously it's great to just be able to go and see your clothes all in one there is something about opening a door and having to go and look for things whereas if it's all open you walk into a sort of you know wardrobe where you've got no doors and fantastic if you have
Starting point is 00:24:55 you know if you have the space to do that but I think if it's in your literally in your bedroom and you can see the wardrobe I would say put doors on it also I think when people are planning wardrobes they don't think enough about where you're going to put your mirror so when planning a wardrobe of any kind in your bedroom you really want very close by a full length mirror so find a wall if you are tight on space and you don't have a wall to put a full length mirror put that mirror on the back of the door in your wardrobe so that you can really get a good view of yourself gal okay poll hopping out into the garden with my cup of tea uh this is from emma polly i absolutely love your tutorials i have my spreadsheet and now i'm looking for a tree that will look great in june please help okay so the tree that you're going to want is a cornus coosa it is spectacular at this time of year. They're all in flower at the moment. I just went to a client site and saw a Cornus Cusa Satomi, S-A-T-O-M-I,
Starting point is 00:25:51 which has a pink flower, which is so beautiful. They're in flower now. The flower's about the size of my palm and they can start white and often they'll pink out. So two of my favorites, Cornus Cusa China Girl and Cornus Cusa satomi satomi's pink china girl is white beautiful almost like handkerchief style flowers this time of year and also some decent autumn color so cornus cusa those are the one for you great good one what is in and what is out what is in and out this week oh i'll tell you what's in what's what's back in it's got to be birkenstocks finally it's birkenstock it's birkenstock season are you a Birk wearer do you know what I love them but my feet are sort of in between sizes and so my toes always push up against that little ridge
Starting point is 00:26:33 but yes I absolutely love it you know they're just so comfy aren't they so comfy I don't like my feet I have to say I'm not one I'm not I don't really like seeing feet in general unless someone's got very pretty feet I'm not a very don't think my feet. I have to say I'm not one. I don't really like seeing feet in general unless someone's got very pretty feet. I'm not a very, I don't think they're very attractive things. I'm with you, pal, but some people will pay a lot of money to look at your feet. Not mine, I tell you. Pop them on OnlyFans. And what's out? Screen time. Screen time's out for me. With the weather, it's such a relief.
Starting point is 00:27:06 I can put the kids outside on the trampoline and sort of run around on football and, you know, get them outside away from screens and wretched fortnight, the bane of my life. It's so important for little brains. This leaves me to say, my darling friend. Come on then, grovel, grovel, my love. I want you to get on your knees. Get down on your knees immediately. I want your hands in the air and grovel just imagine that I'm on my knees now
Starting point is 00:27:26 saying please like, subscribe, share share with all and sundry, write a review if you haven't written a review yet, why not we know you love it, come on I want to see some more reviews right, I need to go, I need to go
Starting point is 00:27:41 I've got a very busy day, I'll speak to you later I love you dearly. All right, my darling. I love you dearly. Bye, everyone. Big love. Bye-bye. Bye.
Starting point is 00:27:48 Bye. Bye.
