Pine on a summer's day see i've been waiting for you waiting for you hello innies and outies and welcome to this new episode of the ins and outs
with myself jojo bar and the ever so lovely pollyanna wilkinson on this week's episode
we are talking balsamic vinegar. Polly has a major announcement.
I'm going to give you some paint tips to warm things up around here.
We talk about what you should be doing in and out this month.
You're going to learn all about bedroom lights,
Polly's tips on trimming your ponytail,
and itchy lips and itchy bits.
So let's jump on in.
Hello. Hello, my my darling how are you I'm so well how are you what have you been up to this morning has been a mad I literally feel like I've screeched into this seat this
morning because every time I think I'm ready for the morning ahead and I even creep down in the
morning I did my little
Pilates class in my bedroom I came downstairs made my coffee had my collagen set the kids
breakfast up you know got them you know we always get the kids stuff out that at night before got
everything sort of prepared but then as soon as they wake up it's just you can't prepare for what
kids are going to be like yeah and then suddenly all of the organization just goes out the fucking
window and then you're just and then both the um i've got the you can probably might be able to
hear a bit of background noise we've got the uh guys here cutting back all the hedges and
strumming and stuff and then the decorators showed up at the same time so it's absolute
mayhem this morning i've just like threw some mascara on my face especially for you my love oh darling but um but just absolutely mad and then rocky was just having an absolute fit about
the fact that i wouldn't do a plait in her hair and as you well know i can't do fucking plaits
anyway i mean if i was i need to get like just be one of those flat plait mums she just loves a plait
and i just can't do them you never had to worry about these things takes in her appearance it's like absolutely nothing no no gray socks no don't you dare send me into
school without a plat no she'll lose her tiny mind at me if I say no you're not having a plat
it's just a ponytail today she goes fucking ballistic at me so um anyway so that was the
morning and Brad and I are real sort of like we we do juggle together. It's not just me, by the way.
We are a very 50-50 house.
And he's amazing.
And he's like, you know, we're both just like scrambling around, like running past each other, like throwing socks at each other.
And wrong size knickers.
Knickers coming in, you know, like.
Anyway, sorry.
That was a real download, wasn't it?
But anyway, funny, funny mornings tend to be just mad I feel like you're
at the other side of that really aren't you well you say that except every morning I wake up
thinking right okay I'm going to be organized this morning and you know yeah my my kids can
dress themselves and feed themselves breakfast which is nice but we always run out of time
and then they're always eating their toast in the car on the way to school which yeah every day it
just feels like a slight failure but you
know I've leaned into it Brad sent me a Instagram video from as a snippet from an interview with
Ryan um Ryan Gosling no not Ryan Gosling the other one the other fit one Ryan Reynolds and of course
he's a real family man the other one and uh he's obviously got like I think he's got four kids
and he was saying you've just got to embrace the chaos.
As soon as you try and fight it, that's when it goes wrong.
You've just got to accept that you're in it.
It's going to be hectic.
You can't control it and just embrace it.
Well, do you know what I'm into now, which is new?
Go on.
I'm getting, my 10-year-old is definitely waving at some pre-teen behavior now
is that happening oh my god tell me i don't know how i'm gonna be cut out for this
i just it's like a back chat but it's also the sulks it's like the the low-key side eye
and the oh i mean it's it's interesting isn't it because they
actually give you uh what you are I think we've talked about this before how they like the reflect
you are that you struggle with so like I don't think I can I can hold a grudge or I can I can um
I'm quite good at the silent treatment and I remember it as a kid oh I could really punish
my parents with that one and uh
yeah I've got a I've got a son who is stellar at a bit of silent treatment he is a ninja at it so um
you reap what you sow what else have you been up to catch me up I just got back from a few days
in Bologna this is so cool that they took us on a on a balsamic um vinegar tour so we got to go to this
family-run balsamic vineyard and they it's the honestly poll you would have absolutely geeked
out here they had um oh you'd have loved it so how they make balsamic vinegar is obviously in barrels
right but you know when you get balsamic vinegar in the supermarket it's very watery yes that's
because it's usually under about 10 years old.
So the younger it is, the more watery it is.
The thinner it is.
So it has to sit in the barrels for years.
To get all thick and gluey.
Yeah.
And the barrels are different woods.
So there's a row of these barrels.
And there's sort of a large barrel.
And then it gets smaller and smaller and smaller in increments until you've got a small barrel on the end now each of the barrels is made of
different woods so the first wood is like is a cherry wood and there's a juniper wood and there's
an oak and there's a you know and they're all so that what they do what every year they move the
liquid from the larger barrel into the small into the one bullet next then they move it from that
one into the one to the next and from that one into the one to the next
and then that one to the one to the next.
And they do this once a year, every year.
And they've got rows of sort of 10-year-old vinegar.
You've got rows of 15-year-old vinegar.
You've got rows of 100-year-old vinegar, like syrup.
It's absolutely delicious.
And you can taste the cherry and the juniper.
It is absolute.
But we're talking like thousands of pounds for this sort of hundred
year plus and you can actually invest you can invest in in um balsamic vinegar barrels you
can actually invest in like sort of artwork it sounds amazing it's waving at winemaking there
isn't it it is it really is although there's no alcohol in it and apparently it can sit in a
bottle on your shelf forever it doesn't go off really yeah i mean to be honest with you some very old balls so did it does it
keep maturing in the bottle i'm sure i've got some kicking around no i don't think it does i don't
think it i don't think it does in the bottle i wouldn't actually no i'm pretty sure it has to
sit within the wood it's a real shame but um but you know there's nothing that beats like that really delicious olive like proper
raw olive oil with a blob of thick balsamic vinegar with some bread dipped in what if i get
mr big to knock me up some little wooden barrels like mini ones lucky you didn't just stop there
and knock me up balsamic in there is that is that gonna work it's not gonna work no now now i know
i'm good i'm now a massive balsamic snob so i now will have nothing nothing less than 15 years
anything less just won't suffice so um that that's me give me your catch-up oh the biggest news i
can finally i could finally talk about the book this is so okay come on then talk to us because the book's going to be out by
the time this is this comes out so uh well the pre-orders are out so i have i've announced it
so it is called how to design a garden yes so it does what it says on the tin so by pollyanna
wilkinson by pollyanna wilkinson so the book is essentially me holding your hand through how to
design your garden from measuring it and doing your site survey all the way through to drawing
it up, choosing your materials, choosing your plants, figuring out an interesting layout, how to
play around with different layouts and I even take you down like a little bit of a design journey in
terms of how we learnt to design it in design school so it's not just a case of drawing some circles where you
think should be but actually playing around with design concepts I'm going to teach you design
principles um but really it's taking you through exactly what we do in the studio when we design a
garden and then once you've designed it at the end there's also going to be a full
month by month how to look after your garden once you've designed it as well so are you buzzing
i am buzzing yeah this has been about 18 months in the making actually so it's been it's been
really really hard work fitting it in amongst life work children oh my gosh you're gonna be
an author joy i'm an author yeah that's mate you should be so proud of yourself i am so proud of
you oh thank you pal i really am but it's available for pre-order now at all good retailers
oh my gosh you're gonna be it's gonna be the weirdest thing going into a
bookshop and seeing your book there your name in a book I know it's going into all the waterstones
and it's very very exciting I can't believe it will be actually in shops so the way it works
it's coming out on February the 6th so okay the idea being it coming out then is it's the perfect
time to sign your garden like winter is the perfect time to sit down and do it so that you can sort of crack on in spring so but you can the
most important thing is is to pre-order it it's so excited there'll be a little tour and i'll be
doing a launch and all that jazz so oh may i hope i get a free book or do i have to order it? No, you have to pay for it, pal. It's all sales. Damn you.
Every sale's a sale.
I'll sign it for you.
Oh, are you okay?
Actually, I do really want that.
I want to see what you'd sign in my book.
What would you sign my book with?
Wait and see.
Well done, mate.
We're going to talk probably so much more about this coming up because i'm quite it'd be fun to get little snippets from you maybe maybe throughout the podcast you could weave in some little you know some little excerpts yeah little excerpts
it'd be so good oh mate i'm so proud of you i really am i can't wait for you to see the cover
actually you'll have seen the cover i will so i will have just announced i've seen the cover i've
actually seen the cover i feel very privileged pleased with that cover yes so um yeah yeah get good if you liked the
reels i did so the reason i did the reels it all becomes clear now it's kind of as a bit of a teaser
for the book in terms of if you liked what you saw there sort of on how oh you are good pal you are
good you are oh well you know so that is the big exciting glorious news that
sort of i feel like i it's i'm birthing something there you go there's a visual oh my god you're
birthing a birthing a book oh my god i just made my eyes water i thought of that an eight pound book right should we hop into some lovely and easy now she's questions my
goodness yes let's do so it's sort of why we're here isn't it really come on let's leap on in
okay i have got a question from jennifer i am completely stuck on choosing a kitchen color
i don't want it to look cold if we choose a white or off whiteifer i am completely stuck on choosing a kitchen color i don't want
it to look cold if we choose a white or off white and i'm worried about whether a darker color on
cabinets will look overwhelming what would you suggest and would painting top and bottom cabinets
a different color help it look more spacious okay paul what do you think i'm going to say
what's the first thing i'm going to ask you?
Oh, light.
Is it north-facing?
Is it south-facing? That's it.
There you go.
I'm learning.
She's paying attention.
Christ.
So I cannot stress the importance,
and I know Jennifer hasn't written in this,
which way the room faces.
The way your room faces
and how much natural light it gets is everything when selecting a paint color
well let's pretend it's sunny and then let's pretend let's pretend it's south facing and
then let's okay i'm going to give you a quick a really really quick sort of synopsis here of of
light in a room and what paint colors to choose for different lights okay so you've got to think
and you'll probably'll know this,
so obviously a south-facing room is going to get loads of daytime natural light.
So that's a bright light is daytime.
So south is very bright light.
Yes.
East is obviously going to get that sort of, it's quite a sort of cool light.
And then as you go around towards north, it's cold.
You've got no natural light at all.
So if it's a north-facing room, you tend to have no natural light whatsoever.
And therefore it's very cold. And then, of then of course west what happens in the west the sun
sets and that's usually when you get that really lovely evening sun which is like it's got lots of
sort of warmth in it so that evening sun tends to carry the most amount of orange and warmth
and therefore you want to always counteract what you've got. So if you've got a north-facing room, you're going to need to inject some of that, essentially, light warmth into the room.
So you need to choose paint colors that have warmth in them.
And therefore, if you're choosing a neutral, like a neutral, and you want to go with something like a white,
that white really needs to carry some warmth.
And therefore, it needs something with a bit of, probably a of yellow orange undertones maybe a bit of pink that's really going to help in any natural light even in the you know
the wettest coldest grayest day it's going to carry that um you know that sort of bit of warmth
that it needs and then obviously if you go into a south-facing room or a west-facing room it's
going to have loads of warm light and therefore you can get away with a gray a white that has
a bit of gray in it because it's going to help neutralize that warmth from the sun so she said that she's concerned about using
whites in case it feels too sort of cold stark yeah and it will do so for instance if you took
a white and you put it in a north facing or east facing kitchen and it was the wrong white and it
was a white white white grey undertone white it's going to feel really cold it's going to feel clinical so you can go with something like a nice sort of you know
warm white and that's going to help warm it up a bit so don't be afraid to use white white's just
got to be the right kind of white what about the cabinets pal she said sort of and then cabinets
going dark again you can go dark but just think about what god it's i sound like a broken record
think about what's in that dark color so if you're going with say even just a black there's there's brown blacks which are a bit warmer and then you've got
gray blacks yes so you want to go with something obviously with a bit of warmth in that black so
it's no there's no don't and obviously don't forget as well a room with no natural light
is going to feel smaller if you put a dark color in that room it's going to feel even smaller
so obviously if you want to inject a bit of fun into it.
I don't know why I keep sort of assuming that this is a dark room, Jennifer.
Sorry, it might be a really nice bright room, but we're assuming it's dark.
So go with a colour that's got some warmth to it.
Like my lovely colour Spanked, you know, that's a really, it's terracotta.
It's got a real sort of like earthiness and a warmth to it or go with
go with a nice warm yellow and that's really going to brighten up but you know that there's
greens even green is a fabulous color but maybe go with something slightly more sagey
as opposed to going like with a sort of dark dark green well for example in mine so mine's
south facing and you've put a really beautiful kind of olive-y green, I'd describe this in mine as the main cabinets.
But then you've mixed it up with a different colour for the island.
Gone very beautiful pale pink.
You've also got to take, we took a brief from you.
Pal, you love colour.
I do.
You're a colour gal.
And therefore I wanted to give you some colour in your kitchen.
And therefore we've gone for this lovely sort of blush pink with a really nice olive green those colors are injecting a bit of
life and a bit of fun and a bit of personality into your space which is you know it's you it's
you mate it's you as a kitchen so um you know you you are your kitchen and therefore you know so
think about the colors that you obviously like and that you want to live with um if it's a cool
kitchen don't obviously steer away from things like blue.
Don't go with a blue kitchen.
Not that I'm a fan of blue anyway.
But yeah, just think about those undertones.
I really hope that helps.

All right, pal, got a good one here for you because I do know you love a task.
This is from Fran.
I never know what I'm supposed to do at this time of year in the garden.
Do I just put the garden tools to bed and come back to it in spring?
No, Fran.
No.
Oh, no, Fran.
Yeah, it's a funny time of year, isn't it?
Because I think a lot of people are a little bit over the garden at this time of year.
The weather starts to change.
You're like, yeah, I've done enough of that.
And it looks a bit sad out there, doesn't it?
Yeah, it's sort of grey and a bit wet. out there doesn't it's a bit sad gray and a
bit wet and it's sort of like oh I'd just rather not do much gardening now and I do sort of relate
but it's actually as she says all the time this time of the year a really busy time so things that
you can do now which you will thank me for in the future if you if you have fig trees and this is
because figs are a right mystery to people if you have um a fig take off any of the
fruits that aren't ripe by now like if it's not right by now it ain't ripening this year
so if any any little bullets any little fruit all over your fig take them off but leave any which
are like teeny tiny like the size of a pea that's going to be fruit next year and so by taking off
all the ones that haven't ripened
it's going to allow all the energy to go into little ones you're much more likely to get ripe
ones next year so that's sort of job number one that's a really good that's so good because i've
got some moldy figs sitting on my tree outside yeah i think figs freak people out and they're
not sure whether to leave them on because they think this like massive fig fruit is going to
ripen next year it's not going to happen um so yeah do yourself a favor
do that um now is the perfect time to be planting evergreen trees and shrubs and hedging as well so
we try and do that either in autumn or in spring for evergreens so things that are green the whole
time so if you want to put any hedge units in your garden now's a great time to do it root ball season
is starting which means that you're going to be able to buy like hedge units as opposed to whips which comes like a twig
which you can buy as well if you want to save money but you can buy you know essentially a
piece of hedge which has a big root ball attached to it get them in the ground now perfect time to
do it and also one of the least expensive times of year to do it as well so you'll save a lot of
money and then I guess the other
thing you can do well two other things you can start moving plants now so I get messages all
the time going like can I move my hydrangea now can I move my rose now now is the time to do it
it's a brilliant time of year to do it um so if you've got any deciduous things that drop their
leaves I've I don't know in a couple of weeks they're going to start dropping their leaves in
earnest I would have said so as soon as those leaves have dropped which is
kind of saying the plant is asleep dig it up and move it wherever you want to go um the caveat to
that is if it's like an absolutely ancient massive evergreen shrub it's going to be very difficult
for you to move so if you're moving things i'm talking about things which are quite young probably
only been in the ground like two three years if it if it's been there 20 years it's going to be a right job trying to move it so best of luck but you can
give it a go and finally for those that really want to get into it and want to save some cash
now's a great time to do hardwood cuttings so things like buddleia or cornus or hydrangeas
philadelphus viburnum so deciduous shrubs shrubs that drop their leaves
you can do hardwood cuttings basically as soon as they've dropped their leaves and i'm not going to
talk you through how to do a hardwood cutting on this because it would take a long time but just
hop on the rhs website and it will show you how to do it but essentially free plants as long as
you're patient and know that it's going to take a while to grow now's now's the time to do those
so there's a few jobs for you for October.
Great, mate.
Thanks so much.
You're very welcome.
That is always so useful.
So I've covered off what to do in the garden in October.
Jojo, what should everyone be doing in the house in October?
There's actually a lot to be doing in the house in October.
It's actually quite a fun time in the house.
Tell me more.
Because what have we got coming up?
We've got Halloween coming up, baby. We've got Halloween.
And we love to decorate for Halloween, don't we?
So it's now time to get some little Halloween touches
around the house.
I bloody love a decorative gourd.
It's quite fun, isn't it?
Obviously, you can go quite tasteful with it
or you can go as tacky as you like.
But it's one of those,
I think it's one of the seasons, bar Christmas, that you can actually have a bit of fun, be go as tacky as you like but it's one of those I think it's one of the seasons
bar Christmas that you can actually have a bit of fun be a bit tacky it's great fun with the kids
as well to get them involved I always think so loads of Halloween touches around the house
decorative bats and the mini pumpkins and it is fun you can obviously I think I said this last
week but layering up your beds and your living areas with thick textured throws.
Think cashmere, think texture, think coziness.
Now, this, as I just said about the kitchen, incorporate wood.
So this is a really nice time to bring in, you know, your wood baskets.
Anything like woven materials is going to sort of almost give that sort of organic feel to the season.
Do you know what I mean? So even like log, I always say like log baskets,
just stack up log baskets, even if you don't,
I know that sounds nuts,
even if you don't have a real fire,
but you've got a fireplace,
it's really nice to have some logs stacked up
in a fire, in a basket.
It can just look really nice.
Do you know what I love that you do often
that I see in your photo shoots
is sort of like preserved, like beech leaves.
Yes.
In a big jar yes
beautiful red burnt those lovely burnt colors can look so fabulous in in any interior you can
literally bring them in the bigger the leaves the better put them in a lovely sort of earthenware pot
or a sort of lovely wooden dark wooden pot or something it can look no you're right it can look
such a lovely centerpiece as well what else can you do i suppose it's just bringing in bringing in those sort of layers
is a really big one um lighting oh my gosh i can't talk about lighting more when it comes to
this time of year i think i mean take inspiration from you know the swedes higgy or higa i think as
they say it where we want to get low lighting low level lighting turn off the overheads light the
table lamps get some more light low level lighting and turn off the overheads, light the table lamps, get some more light, low level lighting and just dim the lights.
Light candles. Candles at this time of year is such a joy.
There's something about lighting a candle and seeing it, smelling it.
Just that little flicker of flame can really give you a sort of, you know, a real sort of feeling of hygge.
I don't know, a real sort of feeling of higgy.
I always think back to Dr. Tara when we talk about candles,
about how you need to make something sense for sort of like, you know, stimulating your brain.
Yes, you're right.
And then there's loads of boring bits from the outside of the house that you should be doing around the house.
Like, you know, a really big one actually, guys,
it's actually changing your filters.
I learned this recently.
Changing filters on what? it's actually changing your filters this is a i learned this recently because on if you've got dryers things like tumble dryers um yeah because you're going to be using a lot now obviously
because you're not going to be hanging clothes outside so check all your filters make sure that
you've sort of cleaned everything out that's a good tip you don't get clucks the other day and
he was like it's gross i've never done this i was like no it's gross well
done mr big i know he's great lesson next up i've got a question from meg bedroom ceiling lights
what on earth do you choose i have a kind of light sludge color walls and brushed brass fixtures
is a pendant with brass and ribbed glass too harsh or should i be going for a shade what does
jojo recommend for bedroom ceiling lights?
Thanks, guys.
Something you can swing off, preferably, pal.
Absolutely something you can swing off.
Get those ceilings reinforced for all your swings and things.
No, genuinely, Meg.
Is it Meg?
Meg, sorry, Meg.
Yes, it's Meg.
Glass is far too harsh for a pendant ceiling light,
for a pendant light in a bedroom.
Is it?
It is. When she's talking about a ribbed light, for a pendant light in a bedroom. Is it? It is.
When she's talking about a ribbed glass pendant, don't forget pendant means single.
So pendant means it's hanging down.
Oh, I see, I see.
So either you want a bit of a multi-arm.
That's more kitchen-y, isn't it?
Yes, it's kitchen-y.
So either you want a bit of a multi-arm situation going on.
But I will always in a bedroom go with something with a shade, a little shade.
Even if it's a three-point light for instance
always something with a soft it needs some softness always needs a bit of fabric good tip
it just feels too cold especially glass glass is something when you think of a pendant glass
pendant ribbed glass pendant you're either i'm immediately think entrance hall or you know down
a little entrance hall lobby or somewhere or in a kitchen yeah definitely not
designed for bedrooms no something softness hanging over your bed i think i'd feel a bit
uneasy having a glass yeah orb or something hanging over me yeah and actually also a good
little tip actually here is think about the bulbs that you've got in your lights in your ceiling
um in your bedroom ceiling lights because you can get
these brilliant frosted bulbs um by tallah i don't know if anyone knows tallah t-a-l-a they're
amazing beecot registered beecot registered they are fantastic beautiful lights that last forever
these bulbs so they're an investment piece they're about 25 quid a bulb but they last honestly when
i say they last forever but they give a really beautiful, soft, warm glow.
Fantastic in a bedroom.
That's a good tip.
So reach for something with fabric on it.
Fabric, yeah.
For the softness.
Definitely, yeah.
Okay.
Whizzing out to the garden.
Whizzing out to garden for a quickie.
Message for Polly.
What do I do about my...
Why do you have to ask these?
Steeper tenuism. How did i do you steeper tenuous it's really flopped about an incredibly messy looking now i've heard of a
well-known tv gardener monty don so to cut it back but everything i read says don't what should i do
i hate it looking so messy love your podcast ideas informative and entertaining much love
hill view number 16 ah okay right i've done trial and error with this one so steeper tenuissima uh some people call it
like the ponytail grass um yeah it gets really floppy at this time of year and usually that
means you haven't combed it with um i use a tangle teaser i recommend it oh do you yeah you get like
an actual kids tangle teaser yeah best thing you could use
on it and so what you do is the reason it's flopping is because uh steep attenuosum puts
out loads and loads and loads and loads of seeds and then essentially it's it's like a wet matted
ponytail uh so what you do this time of year or preferably sort of summer but you know whenever
you like is you get a tangle teaser and you drag it through and you take out all the seeds and
you'll find that you just get this big thick like mat of seed heads by doing that you'll instantly get the grass back to being an actual
lovely breezy grass whenever i have cut it down and i have given that a go before you end up
looking like you've got this like shawn mohican it like cuts down but then it doesn't grow back
at a regular rate so you've got this sort of stubby little short thing with sort of tufts
rate so you've got this sort of stubby little short thing with sort of tufts no one likes a stubby little short thing ain't no one wants that no one wants that in the fullness of time yes they
do grow back so I think if if it's very unruly and I would never go against the mighty don that
is mr don but I've just found that actually just brushing them through is is far far easier um and
that tends to solve most problems.
And then you don't have to sort of wait for it to grow back because it takes a long time in my view.
What a cool tip.
That was a fun one to end on.
Which leaves us to just discuss, my friend, what's in and what's out.
What is in and what is out?
In for me, I'm going to say maroon, which I'm sporting today.
Which you are sporting.
I love maroon jumper.
Did you plan this?
Something tells me you planned it.
All I want to do is burst into a song by Taylor Swift,
a mention of the word maroon.
But I just love it.
I love seeing it in interiors.
I'm loving seeing it in fashion.
I agree.
It's such a beautiful colour.
I love it in lipstick as well.
I agree with you, pal.
Does it fall within your color wheel it's I think
it's one of the only ones that both of us that we can both wear because it's kind of autumny and
it's kind of wintry right shall we match at the Decorex show should we go together in the room

a lip blur and it's basically when you start to lose your lip you know lip line you sort of
blur the edges of your lips and it makes your lips look fuller it's amazing is it one of those
like stingy ones i'll share on the old uh well there's two parts actually because they've got
this little one it's like it's a it's got an almost like a little plastic brush on it and
you brush your lips you're supposed to kind of brush and get the you know get all the sort of
blood pumping to the surface of the lips but also take any dead skin off your lips you need sort of looking after
and then when you finish you're looking at my lips aren't you as they're talking i can't stop
