Hey guys, it's episode 289.
Welcome back to the show.
okay I don't think there's any way to say this without sounding absolutely insane
Um, but here we go. Here we go. Uh, I ran a half marathon today for fun. I ran.
So we're going to, we're going to talk about it. Okay. That's what this episode is going to be
about. I'm going to walk you through, I'm going to run you through my experience running a half
Marathon as someone who is not a regular runner at all. So yeah, hit that subscribe button. I'm
here seven days a week. If you're new, go ahead and do that. And yeah, hang out with me every day
if you want and listen to me talk about life, talk about things that are going on in the world.
I often comment on current events and news and I put in my two cents, share my opinions,
my thoughts um and then other than that it's pretty much yeah just me and my life me and my
dog talk about my uh you know day-to-day happenings okay just like every other casual content creator
on the internet who i don't know i just i feel like the only it's like low effort because it's
nonsense and I don't have to I don't script this I don't come with a theme every show um
that seems like low effort and the effort part is the fact I do it every day so it balances out
I'm like oh well I'm serving you a podcast some days a week so I'm working really hard at that
but then the actual content itself like what I'm talking about is complete nonsense but that's fun
and I feel like it actually is entertaining and people like it so whatever yeah so
um I broke my legs fun fact I my legs don't work
at least that's what it feels like um I got I'll tell you what I did I basically they've
been iced all day I didn't actually break them but I iced them all day but let me walk you through
let me back things up to why I decided to run a half marathon on a Sunday morning why did I decide
to do this um it's quite simple it's kind of the same reason I decided to do a podcast
um and I I think this might be a flaw in my wiring or a circuit issue in my brain
like I literally just had a thought about it and I locked in and decided to do it and
complete it that that's it like yesterday I go
I want to run 13.1 miles tomorrow I want to do half marathon
and today I did it and it's done and my legs hurt but it's done and I did it
Um, I mentioned this is the same thing as when I started a podcast or decided to do a podcast
every single day for a year. I literally just had a thought and I did it. That's just what
happened. And I, I thought it and I did it. And that's how simple achieving your goals is everyone.
Jimmy, don't eat that pine cone boy. God damn it. He's going to crunch it all over the floor.
whatever he's bored and that's a natural product that's a natural chew toy that'd be like him just
out at a park having fun I don't freak out about like him eating a pine cone I freak out about him
eating a piece of plastic or something but that's how easy achieving goals is you just like whatever
you want to do you can do just so yeah think it dream it right do it that that's simple that is
how simple it is. And anyways, um, back to the run back to the deciding to do. So a little
backstory is that I've been, now that Jimmy has gotten a little bigger, my golden retriever puppy
has gotten bigger. I feel more confident and comfortable running with him versus when he was
a little puppy, or I would feel like that just seemed like torture when he had little short
legs. So recently I've been going on daily runs. Like I'll go run a couple miles. I've worked
myself up to six miles. So, you know, I've been for the last month kind of doing that. And so
the thought came in yesterday and I go, okay, I want to push myself. I want to try. So I'm
going to do something really hard. And it's not like I've never ran this far before, but
I don't do it all the time. It's not something I really planned on. I just randomly decided to do
it. So, um, this is, let me, let me just explain what I did. Let me just cut to the chase here.
I woke up at like five, I believe. And I wanted to do this early. I knew it was going to take me
a couple hours. Probably. I knew I'd probably have to break or walk some of it maybe,
which I didn't. I like, well, there was, yeah, there was a point I'll explain when I did, but
So I woke up, yeah, I got up early. I had my outfit all set out before, or I had it all set
out from the night before. I had liquid IV packets on deck for my hydration. Shout out liquid IV. I
used the immune support one, the tangerine flavor. Yeah, I had some good socks, good shoes set up,
some good pants. And I had my headphones all charged up and I just opened my door and I
started running. I turned on my Apple watch that was tracking my run and I went and I did it. And
I don't really know what else to say other than it was early on a Sunday morning. There weren't
a lot of people outside. I played music the whole way. I played a lot of throwback, like middle
school, young jock, um, fucking soldier boy music, uh, Jay Sean type shit, like really old stuff
So that got me through it. And yeah, I don't, I just, oh, this is the thing I should mention
about my route. So last night I was dreaming up my route. I was like, okay, where do I want to go?
I could run through the city. I could go somewhere scenic. I could drive somewhere and go somewhere
scenic. I mean, we've got the ocean here in San Diego. I got, you know, it's like a beach view.
I could do like a beach view run. So yeah, that was my night last night. And then I fucking,
just ran in a circle okay I ran on the same road back and forth like how many times I have to do
it like 20 times or whatever I don't even know what to say about that's what I did okay and
here's why so I go to this stop sign when I walk Jimmy I know it's a mile every day I usually if I
do a quick walk with him I'll just go down and back the stop sign and back and I knew that was
a mile so on my first lap or when I first went out the door I just started the run like as if
I was walking I left Jimmy at home he was he slept in while I ran um yeah there's no way he
was gonna do this whole thing with me so I just I just like walked out the door as if it was a
typical morning where I've got my dog and I'm going on a run and I ran that route and so I got
to the stop sign I'm like I'm just gonna go down and back down and back down and back and I got in
this rhythm with it and I think what I realized is that when you know what to expect and you know
what's coming it kind of feels and if and if you're familiar familiar with the scenery it kind
of feels i feel like it feels better than doing something like doing a new route and having like
no i don't know that might be more interesting to like run and you would see new things and
you'd be more stimulated by the visuals but like i like the whole boring um
why is this why does this keep cutting out
come on call center employee headset for me i was on that was 30 that i've been using this
entire time for 289 episodes. Come on. Come on, girl. Work. It's all twisted up. I think that's
why the cord's all twisted. It's kind of like running on a treadmill. You just stare somewhere
the entire time and you get in this zone. I think that's what it was. My mind just got in a zone.
It didn't matter that I was running in the same location over and over and over again. It was just
like mind over matter. I just put my one foot in front of the other and I was going
and it was kind of like a game because i knew that every down and back was two miles so i just
did the math and i was like i just got to do this six and something times right no fuck
down and back is two down and back is four down the back of six yeah like seven times
under less than seven i you know what you guys get it um so i ran six no i got myself
done with eight miles and I went home and I got Jimmy and then I ran two miles with him so that's
when I stopped I went home at eight miles which was a bitch because I I think as I'm proud of is
I never stopped so for those eight miles I never stopped I never walked I just there was a fire
hydrant on the opposite end of the of the stop sign mark and I would circle around the fire
hydrant and like I didn't allow myself to stop because that would have been like the I would be
done with two miles and then I could like walk a little bit no I just like down and back down and
back to so I went eight miles without stopping and then I came home and got Jimmy I drank a bunch of
water right I drank a liquid IV that was probably smart probably for cramping and stuff more
electrolytes more good stuff in my body and then Jimmy and I ran two miles we ran our route typical
same literally the same route and I dropped him back off at home so it was that 10 miles and then
I finished the last 3.1 by myself like I just did that and then I was done that's it like I don't
know there's not much else to say um it I did it in two hours I forget the time 2 39
seems like a long that seems really long for 13 miles to no 219 I don't know the thing is is that
I was trying to be mindful of my apple watch and like pausing it when I walked inside and like I
tried to make it so I don't think I did a good job of that like there were times where yeah I was
getting jimmy I was walking inside my apartment I wasn't really running and I think that I should
I should have stopped and paused the time, so it would have been more accurate, it would have,
so then it would just log what I ran, and not the other stuff, but whatever, I'm proud of myself,
I pushed myself hard, it felt amazing, I hurt, but that's okay, I immediately, so one thing I did
after the run was, because I planned on this beforehand, I was like, I know I'm gonna have to
ice. So I went to, uh, right after the run, I like cooled off and then I went to the gas station
and got a bag of ice and a protein shake and a banana or something. Yeah. I got a banana and
a protein shake. Probably not enough, but that's all I fucking ate. I was not hungry after. I feel
like people after a run are like, Oh, I'm so hungry. I'm like, I, I just kind of felt, I just
hurt and I just wanted to relax and so I had my legs on ice all day and I had a back massager
it's my little amazon back massager I love I had that going on my neck and it felt really good and
I just like chilled I mean it's Sunday I just like watched tv and iced and hung out
and I felt really good I felt like
you know it's not something I do all the time but
it's something I just I liked that it was random I like that I didn't really plan on it
and I liked that I didn't have a single doubt that I couldn't do it the entire time
fuck yeah like that's it oh my god guys that's how easy achieving whatever like literally life is
you just don't allow thoughts of I can't I can't it's gonna be too hard I can't I can't
If you don't, then it's, then anything is possible and you can do anything.
It's such a mind, everything in life start, it's like the mind is everything.
And I'm proud that I, or I guess that was a good test or whatever.
Because I, after the fact, after the fact I noticed, or I can recognize and observe that
I was in full like positive optimistic mode the entire time
that's crazy to think about like the like last night I wasn't like I didn't say in my brain
oh I want to do I want to try a half marathon or I want to do that again tomorrow morning
oh but it's gonna be really hard oh that's gonna be really hard I didn't do any of that
I just got inspired by it I think what it was
and this is a new thing for me about trying new things and and working towards new goals
is I think about it and then I get inspired and then I get excited and energized about it
And there's, that's what builds the momentum that carries me and that launches me towards
achieving the goal.
And the second I allow, or the second my brain, something negative gets mixed in there, it
fucks the system up a little bit.
It makes, it slows that progress and that momentum a little bit and it holds you back
a little bit.
it, like, wilts you, it wilts you, and that's crazy, I mean, I'm a generally positive, optimistic,
happy person, but you kind of have to be, what's the word, like, psychotically optimistic,
what's the fucking Gary V term, you have to be, you have to sound ridiculous, I think that's,
with goals, and being, and achieving big things in life, you have to sound ridiculous,
you have to you have to sound you have to sound a little crazy it's got to sound like
to the everyday person to your friend or your family they have it has to sound they have to
go what the fuck I think that's how it's got to be and I think that's how this was for me because
it was it's not it's not like I'm a runner it's not like I
I don't know I just did it I guess it's not I'm making I think it honestly and after now that I'm
saying this I don't first of all I'm not I should quit saying this but I don't get impressed by
myself over literally anything I'm never I'm just not a I don't go wow I'm so amazing ever I just
I always feel like there's room to improve or I could have done better or
um I just don't want to ever get complacent and like be I just I always want to have an edge I
always want to strive and try to do better be better jump higher whatever and I think I can
so what did I think I can go okay yeah I'm proud of that that was a big deal but in my brain I just
went or what I was going to tell you guys is I think it would be more of a impressive thing if I
did a fucking marathon randomly not a half 13 miles ain't shit it wasn't that bad honestly
it was like I could easily I mean I don't know I don't know about a marathon
I mean my legs are shot I can't I guess you'd train for it but um
yeah, I think that's something I need to cut out of my, or like, I'm kind of, I've recently been
a habit of saying that I'm not, um, impressed or whatever with anything I do or that.
Okay. Here's what it is. I know it's a, I know that I know it was a big deal for me to do that
today and I'm proud of myself and I guess I impressed myself because I never stopped I
pretty much ran well when I got Jimmy I did so I I it's that that that little thought though those
thoughts don't take up a lot of brain space and I don't it's like a quick thing like I can
acknowledge it quickly wow Jacqueline great job that was a big accomplishment you did amazing
but I just leave it at that and I move on
and I don't want I don't I don't bask in it wow Jacqueline you're so amazing you're so talented
you're so great at what you like and I don't think it's a self-esteem issue I think it's a
like
I don't know I just like I don't know how it just
again I don't want to I always want to have a fire under my ass and if I think I'm so great
and amazing and all that I think that would take it would like make me I don't know I also here's
the thing I don't I don't like to sound like I'm full of myself either
like I'm shy about like I just don't want to ever sound like I'm full of bullshit or like full of
myself or cocky and arrogant like yeah like so like what if I just nonchalantly nonchalant
to like I what if I just casually mentioned I did that and acted like it was not a big like
just like yeah I ran this morning and just like yeah it's like my legs hurt but you know like
I feel like there's a way people talk that comes across super
arrogant and cocky and they're not even aware they do it and I just that's like I just don't
want to be that person so I have to say like the other things to like
like to alleviate that or whatever to diminish that or
like they want it's you know what it is they come
they say things this type of individual says
things in a nonchalant way but they're but they're bragging is that what it is
wait am I doing that I'm saying it not no I'm not saying it nonchalant
I'm not I'm not saying oh I just casually ran 13 miles I didn't ever say
that. So, um, they say things in a just off the cuff, like nonchalant way, but like they're
bragging. They're like, Oh, it's not a big deal. But like, if that makes sense, I don't know.
So anyways, um, I know the recovery is going to be about three or four days of soreness on my
quads, especially, and my calves, um, probably going to hurt when I, it's going to probably
hurt to sit down and, like, bend my legs, but, dude, people are dying, like, this is my perspective
thing, this is why I'm able to pretty much brute or fucking get through anything, it's, like,
okay, so, yeah, your legs are gonna hurt for, like, four days, but you're not dying of cancer,
you're not at, you're not in the middle of a war zone, you're not getting bombed, you're not
sad, like, you could have, you could have a thousand other worse things to deal with than
having sore legs, and I don't, so perspective is everything, there's your little, there's your
little life advice tip, whenever your life is feeling like it's caving in on you, and everything
sucks, it's just, think of things that suck more, and that'll help you realize that you actually
have it better than you think, you always do, everyone, like, that's the thing about life,
you have like you're if you're listening right now you probably have it so good
compared to other people in this world like i don't know it's all i don't know
your your version of hell though is your version of hell and it's valid i think that's another
thing to add to that is that it's okay like it's like when rich people cry and they're sad and
people go, like, well, you have all this money, like, you know, what the fuck, or why aren't you
happy, well, it's, like, it's real for them, you know, it's, it's their, I don't know,
it's, everyone's entitled to that kind of stuff, like, with your, um,
because you, I don't know how to say it, you can't, I don't know, fucking Jacqueline,
and shut the fuck up. Can you stop swearing so much? Um, what's happening? What am I going
to do? I don't know. Probably eat something hefty tonight cause I should. And I'm on a
new show. It's called billions, billions on Amazon prime and it's great. It's a, it's
like about a hedge fund in New York and it's got that actor from Band of Brothers in it I don't
even know I literally I only know about Band of Brothers because of my dad and brother would I
feel like that was a we had like a a set of DVDs of all of the Band of Brothers episodes or it was
like a series like a tv i don't even know what it was but um the main actor from that is in
billions and he's uh i think the hedge hedge fund manager guy it's a billionaire
and then there's the attorney guy in it that i feel like i so one thing i haven't done yet you
know when you recognize an actor or someone in a show and you're like i've seen you before but i
don't know where usually I go and I look them up and I figure it out well this guy I haven't done
that with yet and I'm in like the fourth episode I think or fifth and I'm like I'm purposely not
looking up looking him up because I want to have that moment throughout this show where eventually
like by episode like 13 or whatever I'll go oh that's where he's from it'll come to me I don't
know why I'm like that sometimes I like doing that with actors or actresses like because it bugs you
You're sitting there the whole time going, where do I know you from?
Where do I know you from?
Where do I know you from?
Where do I know you from?
Because I could look up his IMDB and, like, figure it out in two seconds, but I'm not going to.
All right.
I think that's it.
Do hard things.
Push yourself.
You'll surprise yourself.
There's your – that's the takeaway.
the human body is so resilient resilient and so amazing and it's i don't know it's meant to move
it's meant to work hard it's meant to be i just love i love physical challenges i've always been
that way i like that's why i loved like fucking crossfit when i was in middle school and like
high school I was just like it sucked so hard but I it's so there's it's so rewarding to do
something hard like do something super strenuous with your body and then like the feeling after
can't be beat I guess that's like the whole runner's I must have gotten a runner's high
but I got cocky at the end speaking of being cocky I um I knew I had like two miles no a
mile left and I started I started running really fast and then I went like 400 meter I imagined a
track and I went fuck me so if it's another mile that means I have to run around a track four times
so basically I just sprinted one lap or like ran really fast from one lap there's no way I can do
this three more times and keep this pace up so I just tanked and I just slowed the fuck down and
um the very last like bit of it though I ran really hard I'm just like get me done with this
and then I called my mom okay thank you for hanging out with me this was episode 289 of
the Jacqueline Monroe show I'm podcasting every day for a year um so if you're new hit that
subscribe button I'm here seven days a week I hope you have a great day and I will talk to you
tomorrow okay bye
Thank you.
