Starting point is 00:00:00 Coming up in this incredible Part 2 episode with Anastasia Sauri. Look at you getting emotional. About your daughter? Good. Yeah. Family is everything. Sorry. I'm sorry.
Starting point is 00:00:16 I don't want to be too emotional. That's beautiful. You're crying. I'm crying. I'm so inspired by your strength, by your story, by your conviction, by your example of betting on yourself by your just complete embracing of who you fully are, like fully authentic, like this is who I am. The amazing and inspiring Anastasia Suare, founder and CEO of Anastasia Beverly Hills.
Starting point is 00:00:48 Anastasia is one of the world's most successful self-made women and is often referred to as the Queen of Eyebrows. And now, for the very first time, she's sharing her incredible journey in her brand new book, Raising Brows. My story of building a billion-dollar beauty empire, which is not only a behind-the-scenes look at building a global brand from nothing, it's packed with tools on how you can achieve your own big dreams, too. As an esthetician and single mother with no connections at the time, Anastasia risked her life, escaping communist Romania to come to America. Raising brows tells the remarkable story of how she built a billion-dollar beauty brand and went from watching Oprah's TV show to learn English to then shaping Oprah's eyebrows, along with building a glittering roster of clients including Jennifer Lopez, Kim Kardashian, Haley Bieber,
Starting point is 00:01:40 Cindy Crawford, and pretty much all of Hollywood. But beneath the glossy exterior, Anastasia's path wasn't easy. From landlords and bank managers laughing at her dreams, she learned to ignore the naysayers and turn her dreams into her destiny anyways. I'm so competitive. I love to win. I have to work. I need to know what's going on. Me and my daughter, we are hands-on with the business. There's a lot of people listening that maybe they have a friend or loved one working with them. When Claudia first started working for you, because now, oh my goodness, now your daughter is also an icon. in the beauty industry and a trailblazer and a change maker.
Starting point is 00:02:24 Do you share in the book a tough love moment when you had to fire her? Oh, yeah. Yeah, yeah. It was a tough love. Yeah, yeah. I was always tough with my daughter. And she was, I think, showing up late, right? Yes, and I fire her.
Starting point is 00:02:36 You fire her, yeah. We have to set rules here. Number one, you are never late again. Number two, I am your boss. I'm not your mother when you walk in, and I'm going to be tougher with you than all the employees because I could set an example. From that point forward, did everything shift?
Starting point is 00:02:54 Yes. Yeah. When I came in this country, do you know what was my biggest joy? It was, oh, my God, you could have three jobs? Because I was thinking, like, oh, maybe I could work at this place, and I would work at a pizza place, and I would work here. I could get three jobs. That was amazing.
Starting point is 00:03:12 There's so many places that way you can't get one job. And you're like, whoa, I can get three jobs. That's amazing. That's amazing. My biggest regret is that I didn't have more kids. Really? Yes. You should not.
Starting point is 00:03:25 You should have more because at the end of the day, we build this incredible life and an incredible business. But I wish I had more kids to put them all to work for me. The end of the day, family is everything. You've sort of done it all and you can sit here now and say this is what matters. To me, the most important. even through this conversation, we're going to borrow your courage. We're going to borrow your strength. You should. Anastasia is such a powerful testament to courage, persistence, and believing in yourself when
Starting point is 00:04:03 others might not. I am so excited for us all to learn from and be inspired by her grit, talent, passion, and wisdom today. I am so excited for this conversation. Welcome to the Jamie Kern-Lima show. Oprah, how have you defied the odds? Her show is unlike any I've ever done.
Starting point is 00:05:13 A revelation. When you listen, it feels like a hug, but your brain and your spirit and your heart. was like, wow, Melinda, French, the gates. When I look into Jamie's eyes, I feel like I am on some other cosmic level with her. I could see the light around her. She's infused with light. Imagine overcoming self-doubt,
Starting point is 00:05:36 learning to believe in yourself and trust yourself and know you are enough. Welcome to the Jamie Kern-Lima show. Jamie Kern-Lima is her name. Everybody needs Jamie from Lima in their life. Jamie Kern, Lima. Jamie, you're so inspiring. Jamie Kern, Lima.
Starting point is 00:05:59 I am so excited for part two of this conversation. You can listen to this one by itself or skip back an episode and listen to part one as well. It is so good. Anastasia Soire, welcome to the Jamie Kernelima show. Thank you so much for having me. And you still work so hard because you do not need to work. at all. And, you know, and I have people say to me, like, because I work a lot right now. I actually
Starting point is 00:06:26 work too much right now. But I love it. Like, I love, like, I love this show. I want to, like, I'm so honored to share your story with so many people. So I love it. I'm curious for you because you don't have to do nothing, right? So why is it right now? You still work so. I love it. I love to be, to be, I'm so competitive. I love to be involved. I love to win. I love to create products that might, to me, my biggest compliment is when I read a comment and say, oh, I love your products.
Starting point is 00:07:01 I cannot leave without my browies or microstroke, whatever it is. And to me, that is an incredible fuel to my fire. Yeah. And I love it. What else I would do? Do you feel like you're working? No. No.
Starting point is 00:07:18 I don't feel like I'm working. It's such a blessing. It's such a blessing. This is what I think. It's a blessing that I have the passion. I wake up every morning and I am so fired to go on the Zoom or whatever I have to. All the Zooms? Yes.
Starting point is 00:07:36 Really? I'm so zoomed out sometimes. Yeah. But I have to work. I need to know what's going on. Me and my daughter, we are hands-on with the business. So, you know, I have heard a number of friends and people share that they believe that the greatest of all the forms of success, one of the greatest for them in their life is when their adult children actually want to spend time with them. and you have built your incredible business alongside your incredible daughter, Claudia.
Starting point is 00:08:13 Can you talk about that? Well, many times people kind of mentioned that you are so lucky that your daughter wanted to work with you. And I answer them, well, she didn't want her to work with me, but I didn't give her choice. she because I was working so many hours I wanted kind of to spend some times with her so when she was in school she started working at the salon part time to get some extra money for her gas
Starting point is 00:08:49 or whatever she wanted to buy herself and she started working at the front desk and I could see her and I think was important for her to see how hard I worked because I don't think she realized how hard I was working. She will always complain.
Starting point is 00:09:07 You are never at my school meetings. You are never at the events that we have at the school. And I used to tell her, like, I can't. I can cancel my clients. I have six months ahead of my schedule that clients will book themselves. So she started working at the front desk
Starting point is 00:09:29 at the beginning. I was a little challenging, but slowly she started getting really good at what she was doing. And after a while, she went to the corporate office and she started working in every single department because I wanted her to understand, as you know, creating a company and a beauty business, every department is completely different. Operations are different. Reading a contract and salesperson. It's a different department.
Starting point is 00:10:08 Packaging, marketing. Every department is great and has an important role in building a company. And I wanted her to understand everything. So she did that and she loved the making products, the product development. And she stayed there. And in 2012, as I'm sure you read in the book, She came with the advice, I mean, she was the one talking about the Instagram, was a new app. And she said, Mom, we are traveling because every weekend we used to travel to do personal appearance in Nordstroms around the country.
Starting point is 00:10:48 And she said, we work seven days a week and traveling is not that easy, as you know. is this app, Instagram, we could post videos or pictures, and maybe we don't need to travel that much to promote our brand. I said, of course, let's try it. And we posted a few pictures, and of course we start reading every single comment. And I remember vividly one comment, we posted a Browis picture. And one lady said, oh, I wish I had. I could buy this pencil.
Starting point is 00:11:26 And I said, send me the address and I will ship you one. And she said, oh, you can because I live in a small village in India. And that was the moment when I thought, wow, the reach that this app has, it's unbelievable. I mean, how I will reach in 2012 somebody in India. And that was the beginning of full force, me and Claudia, not only we did every, anything else in the company, we run the Instagram, just us. And you and Claudia and your entire company were so visionary with everything, with social media, with influencers.
Starting point is 00:12:06 I want to ask you, because I think there's a lot of people listening that maybe they have a friend or loved one working with them. Yes. For me, it was my husband. That was a whole, it is a miracle. We are married today. You are still married. Yes.
Starting point is 00:12:19 It's a miracle that we are still in love. because it is hard to run a business or work with someone you love or care about. For you, I love that you share so much of the behind the scenes in the book. And so when Claudia first started working for you, because now, oh my goodness, now your daughter is also an icon in the beauty industry and a trailblazer and a change maker. But when you go to the very beginning when she's working in the front desk, right? And she's, and she's just trying to earn some extra money. And can you talk about, and this is long before, you know, everything else.
Starting point is 00:13:02 Can you talk about how that dynamic was? Because you share in the book a tough love moment when you had to fire her. Oh, yeah. Yeah, yeah. It was a tough love. Yeah, yeah. I was always tough with my daughter, I think. Because I wanted her to be disciplined.
Starting point is 00:13:18 I wanted her. Look, I love my daughter. and there's no question about that. But I believe kids did discipline. And she always had to know that I'm the mother and she's the child and she needs to follow the rules. Of course, when you are young, when you are a teenager, you don't like too many rules. But I give no choice to Claudia. And yeah, we used to fight.
Starting point is 00:13:47 We used to, but at the end of the day, she needed to do. do what she's supposed to. And she was, I think, showing up late, right? Yes. And I fire her. You fire her. Yeah. And was there a moment where you were sort of hoping, like, I hope she comes back?
Starting point is 00:14:01 I hope this works out. She, first of all, she was so good at the front desk. Now we have, we need three people at the front desk. And she was so good. She was efficient. She knew how to handle clients. She was excellent. And I wanted her to come back.
Starting point is 00:14:22 I couldn't replace her. I couldn't find anyone to replace her. And when she came back to, she got the job at the insurance company, and she came back and she asked to borrow some money because she didn't have enough money to pay her rent. She said, Mom, I didn't know I have to pay so many taxes. And can I borrow some money? Like, no, I'm sorry, I can't.
Starting point is 00:14:46 So I wanted her to beg me to get her job back because I couldn't ask her. I want to kind of teach her a lesson. And I went back in the room. And after I shaped, I had another client. I came back. She was still outside. And I said, Claudia, I'm not going to give you the money.
Starting point is 00:15:10 The only thing I could do, because you are really good in what you do, I could give you the job back. It's like, okay, but we have to set rules here. The moment you walk in, number one, you are never late again. Number two, I am your boss. I'm not your mother when you walk in. And I'm going to be tougher with you than all the employees because I could set an example. And that was the rule.
Starting point is 00:15:36 And from that point forward, did everything shift? Yes. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. It was probably the best lesson of her life. Yeah, that's so good because a lot of people struggle to set boundaries at work or they, you know, if they work with someone that they're related to or that they love or care about or a good friend, it's hard for people to do that and to separate.
Starting point is 00:16:00 No, no. For me, you could, no, it could be my daughter, it doesn't matter. Business is business. I never ever do anything, not only for anyone. business is tough. You need to perform. You don't perform. We don't survive.
Starting point is 00:16:19 Yes. Mm-hmm. And don't you find, I'm curious actually, because I think once you start taking off and you start having so much success, success can mask inefficiencies inside. And so were you, have you always sort of been on top of all of that, too? Did you ever experience that where you had underperformers that you were sort of carrying? Of course. Of course.
Starting point is 00:16:41 And most of the time, I like to re-evaluate the people that work. And maybe they cannot perform in a certain area, but they are better in another job in the company. And I like to switch that. And I like to use their talent because I like the people that I work with. Yes. And a lot of people have been with you forever. Yes.
Starting point is 00:17:08 Yeah. Yeah. I have goals that have worked for me for like 20. years. Yeah. Yeah, I love, I love that. It's one virtue that I really admire in people, loyal and, yes. I know when I get resumes now, to this day, where they have a job in here, I tell everyone, and for everyone that is listening, please do not jump one year, every year to another job. Don't jump, because anyone that will look at your resume and see, I was for one year at this company and another year at this company and another year at this company.
Starting point is 00:17:47 No, you cannot build something anywhere if you are not there for a few years. Yeah. So buy the bullet and stay there. Yeah. Build something. Yeah, we won't even entertain a resume at all. And it's interesting, even we work with a lot of agencies, recruiting agencies. They'll send us so many resumes where it's one year, one year, even though we tell them, no, no, no.
Starting point is 00:18:10 You won't even look at it. But it is wild how common that is nowadays. And all I see when I see that is, oh, you're going to jump ship here in a year. We're going to pour into you and pay you to learn for a year. You invest. Exactly. Yes. Yes.
Starting point is 00:18:23 And what people need to understand is that you invest. The company invest a lot in training you to learn to see. And then when you move and you go to somebody else and you say, oh, I grew the company or whatever. You know, in one year you couldn't do that. Yes. So people that are going to interview you, they are smart people. And if you want to really be believable, you need to stay a few years in a job. Yeah, I think it's like the most important thing.
Starting point is 00:18:58 The most important. Build something. Build a great resume if you are young. Yeah, yeah. When you think about Claudia and you think about your journey. of everything you've built from the days when you were the sole breadwinner all the way through to us sitting here right now, do you have any, would you change anything in terms of how much you worked? Because I think about this in my own life and I get this question all the time.
Starting point is 00:19:28 Like, should I do, you know, I want to launch this thing, but oh my gosh, I'm working so much. I'm missing out on my life and missing out on friends and my kids say I'm never home. Would you change anything, meaning do you have any regrets about how much you worked to get to where you are right now? I never regret what my past. I don't like to look that much in my past because I think everything I've done got me where I am today. And I'm so happy and I'm so grateful. and I love that I was able to work that hard. Do you know when I came in this country,
Starting point is 00:20:12 do you know what was my biggest joy? We need to pause for a super brief break. And now more of this incredible conversation together. Do you know when I came in this country, do you know what was my biggest joy?
Starting point is 00:24:40 It was, oh my God, you could have three jobs because I was thinking like, oh, maybe I could work at this place and I would work at a pizza place and I would work here. I could get three jobs. That was amazing. So it was a joyful thing for me And being able to work and to achieve whatever you want and being happy with what you do I think it's and having a purpose is probably the best thing I have ever done in my life Forget about the success and and of course I enjoy every minute
Starting point is 00:25:17 But having a purpose to me is the best thing I know not only that I was able myself to have that, the purpose, but I was able to bring my daughter to have a purpose. To me, that's my biggest achievement. It's so beautiful. Like, the meaning we attach to things or the story we tell ourselves about things can just change our entire life. There's people that don't realize that there's so many places that way you can't get one job. And you're like, whoa, I can get three jobs. That's amazing. That's amazing. And I just think hearing that is so powerful, because we all have the power to shift our perspective on stuff. When you think of your
Starting point is 00:25:58 daughter, Claudia, what are your hopes for her in this life? She will have children. She always, when I ask her about Claudia, I mean, I think you need to have a baby. It's like, Mom, we can. We need to launch this little product. We don't like, We are too busy. No, you are never too busy. You should have a baby. But I hope my biggest regret is that I didn't have more kids. Really?
Starting point is 00:26:34 Yes. You should have more. Because at the end of the day, we build this incredible life and incredible business. But I wish I had more kids to put them all to work for me. But I think it's so amazing Because the end of the day, family is everything. And having children is amazing. It's a gift that nothing could give you more joy.
Starting point is 00:27:09 I don't think I've ever met anyone that says, I wish I had fewer kids, right? It's always, I'm going to, this last two minutes, I'm going to replay for my husband over and over because I've been telling him he's known I always want seven he's like I think we're good with three and I'm like no one ever regret but we just I mean we just welcomed our third into the world thank you but I I and you know you know as you said how hard it is yes but I think the same thing I think like you should have more yeah yeah um 50 years from now when someone asked Claudia
Starting point is 00:27:44 tell me about your mother what do you hope she says I think my daughter is, she will say my mom work very hard, but she loved what she did. Yeah. And what will she say about who you are to her? Oh, we are everything to each other. Yeah. You and I have so much in common. We have been through so many similar things.
Starting point is 00:28:21 Look at you getting emotional. I'm, yes. About your daughter? Yeah. Yeah. What are you feeling? Well, I feel like I run the marathon. And we work a lot.
Starting point is 00:28:44 But thank God we love what we do. Yeah. What can I say? My mother is 92. She's, I mean, she had a great life, but she's, you know, 92. Yeah. And the three of us, I think we had this incredible connection. Three generations, an incredible connection, supporting each other, and it was not dream big enough for us in helping and supporting each other.
Starting point is 00:29:32 When I left Romania, everybody thought, are you crazy to leave? You don't know anyone there. My mother said like, no, go, go, go. And I will come when I will be able to come, I will come. Mm-hmm. Like I said, family, it's everything. Sorry. I'm sorry. I don't want to be too emotional. That's beautiful.
Starting point is 00:30:02 You're crying. I'm crying. I just, I want to say I'm so, I'm so inspired by your strength, by your story, by your conviction, by your example. abetting on yourself by your just complete embracing of who you fully are, like fully authentic, like, this is who I have. You know what I mean? And by you sharing the things that you learn the hard way, by you inviting us into your story in Raising Browse, your new book about just like your journey, your journey
Starting point is 00:30:42 and also hearing now the things that you value, you know, because you've sort of, you've sort have experienced so many things, good and bad, but so many things people could only dream about. And you've sort of just, you've been inside rooms that people could only imagine. I haven't even, if I, if I read your actual bio, we would, I would still be reading it in an hour because of how much you've done, how many of the most incredible, um, iconic women from all over the world that are not just your clients, but your dear friends and, and love you. you've just done so many things and what I love is you've sort of done it all and you can sit here now and say this is what matters. To me, the most important. Yeah, yeah, yeah. The most important.
Starting point is 00:31:30 My family, my mother, my daughter, my friends, people that I work with, very simple. I like simple life. And I'm still excited that I could work. Yeah. And love what I do. And I love that. I think people are, including myself, I think even through this conversation, we're going to borrow your courage. We're going to borrow your strength. You should. Like I literally felt myself in my body being in your spot where you're like, I don't care if no one will valet this car. I'm prioritizing this and I'm going to park this far away. So my daughter's not, you know, all the things. But like, you do not care about what other people think. And I just think that all of us need to borrow that courage because so many of us for so many reasons we shrink or we play it small or we don't
Starting point is 00:32:26 go for it or we doubt ourselves out of it or we conform and it's another form of when you do not care or when you show the other person that their their negative thoughts doesn't affect you then they will not do it anymore. You know what I mean? You build an imaginary wall that you don't let anyone to bully you, to talk bad to you, to stay strong.
Starting point is 00:33:01 And I promise you that this works. Do you feel like you have that an imaginary wall? Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah. This is how I build that because, I mean, it was very difficult at the beginning for me. I mean, I remember Claudia was at the front desk, and she used to say,
Starting point is 00:33:19 Mom, I don't know, this client, the clients are coming here. I don't have a spot for them, and they scream at me, and they are rude to me because they want an appointment right now, and I cannot fit them in. And I used to say, Claudia, this is how you're going to handle this. Build this imaginary glass wall between you and the clients. You always have to be polite to the clients because they are everything to us, very polite. And if they don't understand that we don't have time, we are completely booked, you always have to be nice and say, let me see what I could do for you.
Starting point is 00:34:00 Just give me a few minutes and check. Maybe she could come tomorrow or maybe she could go and shop at Neiman Marcus and come a little bit later or get their cell number. and if they will be able to, you could call them and they could come immediately if a client will not show up for their appointment. Find a way to show greatness and goodness, and I will promise you,
Starting point is 00:34:23 you will be completely different. This is how she did. She did it, and she completely changed her aura and the relationship between her and the customers. Always you have to have that imaginary wall. I bet that's so good, and I bet you teaching her that. because I know she was such an innovator and visionary early with social media and with
Starting point is 00:34:50 influencer strategy and with just, I mean, you know, it's interesting that, you know, nowadays 2025, 2026, I think that any entrepreneur has to be on social media, has to be, I mean, now it's just part of it, but a lot of people don't know how to handle it when you get people that come at you or say negative things. And so I bet you for her, are you teaching her that invisible wall and like, you know, and still, you know, show greatness, but don't let that negativity penetrate you. Have you ever, has she ever, or you ever had tough times being so big on social media and in the influencer world when like some, you know, when that might happen, have you, or have you always been able both of you to kind of keep that invisible wall where you don't let
Starting point is 00:35:38 it dim your light or impacting. We tried, yes. I mean, there were moments probably. They were not the nicest. Yeah. But, you know, you can't make everybody happy. Yeah. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:35:53 And again, we have the best intention. We are here to do the best. We are trying our best. And if you don't like it, I understand. Yeah. But, yeah. I'm sorry, I cannot make you happy. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:36:09 I try. These are the most beautiful words because I think people will take those words who are listening right now and be like, okay, am I trying my best? Are my intentions good? Then, you know what? If I'm not for you, I'm not for you. I'm not for you. And just kind of like, yeah, that's so beautiful.
Starting point is 00:36:25 You know, you and I have so many different experiences and then also so many similarities in our journey. And I just, you know, I think that, what I'm realizing more and more and more and more women and entrepreneurs and men is that a lot of us go through similar things, but a lot of people think they're alone and their rejections or their nose or their hardship. And it's one of the most beautiful, powerful reasons why I'm so happy you wrote this book, Raising Brows, because people are going to connect through your story.
Starting point is 00:37:01 And one of the many things we have in common is both of us. have had our lives completely changed by Oprah. You say that early on when you would watch her show, right, you'd immigrated to this country. You were learning English watching her show. And you say, if she could find her way, so can I. And what I love so much about your book is there are going to be so many people that pick up raising brows and they're going to go, wow, okay, if Anastasia can figure this out, I can figure my thing out. If she can do this, I can figure out how to do this. And so I just want to ask you for the person listening who is going, oh, wait, okay, maybe this book, Raising Brows, Anastasia's story is for me. What would you say to them
Starting point is 00:37:53 that they're going to get out of this book when they get at home? I believe that they should get that power where they would think, the days they were, feel like I can do this anymore, they want to give up. If Anastasia was able to do it, I could do it too. I mean, everyone else has much more than what I had when I came. Yeah. So I didn't speak the language. I didn't know anyone.
Starting point is 00:38:20 I didn't have money. I mean, no, no, you know, every single box was with no, no, no. And I still didn't give up. I started and I did it. And if I was able to do it, everybody else would be able to do it. Just they need to believe in themselves. That's it. I think that's the key.
Starting point is 00:38:46 You need to believe in yourself. You need to believe in your dream. You need to believe that it's something there for you, but you need to take action. Don't look for the perfect plan, the business plan. Don't look for the perfect scenario. You know, just start doing and everything will roll, I think. Didn't you notice, at least I noticed that when I start working and doing the eyebrows, everything happened. I never thought when I start doing eyebrows that I'm going to build a cosmetic company.
Starting point is 00:39:19 But it rolled. Once you take the action and you start doing things will happen at the end of the day. You know what I'm thinking about as well that I just want to say is I, personally, I feel stronger right now just from having this conversation with you. I do. Like, I literally feel stronger. And that was going to be so excited for everyone who's listening to this or part of this. And, you know, I am, I know you know Nadia Komenich, famous Romanian gymnast.
Starting point is 00:39:53 And I, there's a movie, the movie called Nadia, which is like based on her life. And there is a quote in that movie that I love so much. I put it in my book. I just, I love the quote, but the quote reminds me of you. And it's when Bella Carolli, the coach, you know, Bella, was looking for a gymnast and in the movie he is on, he's going to a school, looking for potential gymnast. And he's in the schoolyard and then in the classroom. And he goes up to Nadia, who he meets for the first time. And he says, do you believe that little girls can fly?
Starting point is 00:40:35 And I just remember, and she, like, nodded. And I just remember the first time I ever saw that. And I'm like, I believe girls can fly. Like I, like, what that meant to me. And when I think of you, I think of both of our stories, actually. I think of that quote. Like, I just see you. And I just, I want to say that it is an honor to watch you fly.
Starting point is 00:40:57 And to watch you help so many other women. spread their wings and fly to new heights. And I'm just grateful to know you. Thank you so much, Jamie. Yeah. And I really, really believe that every single person that is listening could fly and could do whatever they want to do. They, whatever they put their mind into, just they need to believe that they could do that. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:41:22 Because I believe it. Yes. They should believe in themselves. Yeah. Yeah. And one of the tools to do that is to get your hand. on Anastasia's brand new book, Raising Brows, My Story of Building a Billion Dollar Beauty Empire. It is out now.
