We've sold 16 million bars of that soap.
What are the odds of the universe
that all of those pieces would come together?
That was a lot of sales, y'all.
Go to companies that are big in that industry
and sign up for their newsletter,
because almost always they will give away
their trade secrets in their newsletters.
Desperation is the best motivation.
When your tank is empty,
when you're at your darkest moment,
that's when you're gonna get the best motivation. When your tank is empty, when you're at your darkest moment, that's when you're gonna get the most creative.
You have zero dollars now to spend
to get yourself out of this hole.
How are you gonna do it?
A bad workman blames his tools.
You can always find a way to blame someone else
for your problems.
And you always have to look at how you might be the problem.
Because when things are going well,
you have to spend as much time figuring out
why they are doing well as you do when something goes poorly.
It's shocking how many people miss this.
They do.
It's just going to help people feel less alone.
Because social media makes it feel like you've got it all
wrong and you suck.
Yep.
I have so many lines in blue highlighter of your book.
Same.
And were you like, same?
Same.
Same.
Same.
You're like, I feel your pain.
Today's episode is packed with secrets
and hard earned wisdom, lessons, and insights
for everyone with a business, a business idea,

business on a farm with goats and turned it into a global sensation and one of the most
successful beauty companies on the planet, Beekman 1802.

own venture, growing a side hustle, or looking to make a bigger impact on the company that
you work at right now.

to build something meaningful and lasting, and maybe even discover your greatest sense of purpose along the way.

Welcome to the Jamie Kern-Lemah Show.
Oprah, how have you defied the odds?
Her show is unlike any I've ever done a revelation when you
listen, it feels like a hug, but your brain and your spirit
and your heart is like wow.
The Linda French gates.
When I look into Jamie's eyes, I feel like I am on some other
cosmic level with her.
I could see the light around her.
She's infused with light.
Imagine overcoming self-doubt, learning
to believe in yourself and trust yourself
and know you are enough.
Welcome to the Jamie Kern-Lima show.
Jamie Kern-Lima is her name.
Everybody needs Jamie Kern-Lima in their life.
Jamie Kern- is her name. Everybody needs Jamie Kern Lima in their life. Jamie Kern Lima.
Jamie, you're so inspiring.
Jamie Kern Lima.
I want to ask you about your DNA of your brand and also clearly who you both are with kindness
and opening up to community and imagining in your town, like in so many towns,
like in so many of my families, I have five families,
like everything's so divided and people have different views
and they vote different and love different
and all the things.
And right now with how technology is,
with how social media is,
with how much vitriol there is out there,
how a lot of people are scared
to put their business out there,
to put their idea out there, because you almost can't.
It's hard to do anything without getting criticism or division
or vitriol.
And so how do you guys navigate that?
I know you read every single customer email
and customer service email.
But also, like, in 2025, 2026, it's like everything
that we do
or don't do, it just comes with critics and scrutiny.
And how do you navigate that all?
Like, what's your advice for that?
Cause a lot of people I feel like are doubting themselves
out of their own destiny because they are scared
to about how to handle that.
Well, I would say, particularly on social media,
if you're looking at social media,
if you are going to be on social media,
which if you have a business, you must be on social media,
you are going to occasionally get some negative comments
and things like that, that's just the nature of it.
What I try to do first is I look at the comment,
I try to understand if there is anything
to possibly learn from the comment. Because I often think, okay, if someone is making a comment, I try to understand if there is anything to possibly learn from the comment.
Because I often think, okay, if someone is making a comment, maybe there is a kernel
of truth into what they're saying. So I always look to see, okay, is there something I need
to learn from this comment? If there's not something I can learn from the comment, delete,
delete, because you have the power to delete. It's your life, it's your social media, just delete.
You don't need to give them energy, right?
Oh, you just had Mel on your show, what does she say?
Let them have that belief, it doesn't have to,
it doesn't have to do anything for you, just delete it.
And here's what I have found is that the minute
that you delete it, it goes out of your mind.
You do not dwell on it. It is gone.
And maybe that's the nature of the social media beast
and that there's always something new coming in,
but you just delete it and it is gone.
And don't you find,
and I just want everyone hearing this to listen,
it just comes with the territory
of anyone who's willing to do anything.
It's like you're willing to do anything,
put your ideas out there, your art, your book,
your business, your feelings, It just comes with that. And it's not that
something's wrong with you. It's just like, oh, occupational hazard. It just comes with
it.
It is.
It is. And I also think that is one of the benefits of age is that when we had our TV
show 15 years ago, we would read those comments and it would
hurt us a lot.
And now that is one of the great things about age is I can look at those comments now and
say to Brent's point, well, maybe they have a point.
That was some bad thinking that I did.
But most of the time it's like, that might be important to that person, but it's not
important to me, so I can let it go. Mmm. That's good. Yeah. If someone is brand new to Beekman 1802, what is the first product they
should buy? For me, the soap. Like, the soap is what we started with, and it's still my personal
favorite product. And it's the one that has changed most people's skin.
That's the one that they use.
Men, women, everybody uses that.
Then Brent did all the research in the science, so now he's so deep into skincare.
I will say the soap is important because the way you cleanse your skin is the foundation
of healthy skin.
So, soap is really important and facial cleanser is important.
But now we've sold 60 million bars of that soap and we have invested that money into the research to figure
out why goat milk has been used for thousands of years to treat people
particularly that sensitive skin. And what we have learned are there 31 key
nutrients in goat milk that actually nourish the microbiome of the skin as prebiotics for the microbiome of the skin and that makes your skin healthier
and more resilient. And the latest technology that we've worked on is using
the exosomes which we extract from the goat milk to serve as delivery vehicles
for the peptides we're putting into our formulas.
And I think some of the best scientific discoveries that have ever happened in the history of
the world happen by serendipity, right?
So what are the odds that someone with a specialty and a passion for helping people age better
would then somehow fall into a goat farm and then start researching goat milk.
And then a decade later,
people discover the skin microbiome.
And then three years later,
people discover the power of exosomes.
And guess what?
Those are all in goat milk.
Like what are the odds of the universe
that all of those pieces would come together?
Well, thanks to you, Farmer John,
and all of the steps and your hard work
and your backgrounds, it's like it's all come together.
There's so many resourceful ways for everybody
to have things come together, right?
They can, let's say they're not a doctor,
but they can bring advisors onto their advisory board
who are maybe, or there's different ways to pull this all together.
And what I love so much about your book is that for someone who has no interest in business,
they just want to learn really good wisdom, life lessons, things that might bring them
more joy or connection or community.
It's so good.
And then for somebody who maybe is really far along, they also have a business that's nine figures in sales a year.
That was a lot of sales, y'all.
Congratulations on that.
There's such great stuff in there
that helps you feel less alone, but also take
your business to the next level.
And then for someone who's maybe just starting out,
there's so many granular stories.
There's so many things that on zero budget, how do you do and
how can you sort of like absorb through osmosis the ways of thinking?
And I love when you guys get granular even on QVC and how you learn that
the suds overflowing from the soap that people just like connect with it because
when I watch you guys do the suds and the soap, I'm like, I need that soap.
And you want to just feel what's happening.
But then you also get really granular on your personalities
and each of your nuances.
And I love that kind of stuff
because you talk about how there's a photo shoot
and there's no suds of soap on the bar.
Like that can make the ad not effective or just little details and
you're both, I mean you're so involved in things. This is gonna be a funny moment. So tell me something. So we get
the two books in the mail and you want to know the first thing I thought?
Right. Is I thought Brent is gonna be really, Brent is gonna notice that the corner.
Is bent.
One quarter's bent.
I've been cringing here the whole time.
I knew it, I knew it.
And it's so funny, I told Sarah on my team,
I go watch, I go I know them well enough now.
They're different skill sets.
Reading the book, you can tell
what different skill sets turned into what
and what different personality types
and how those helped the business.
And you subscribe, is it 20?
Newsletters.
20 newsletters, email newsletters.
I just, you know, I'm obsessed with this idea that success leaves clues.
Can you just share, can you share your morning and how you start with 20 newsletters and
what that does for you?
Because again, this is free.
Anybody can do this. It's free.
There's so many free newsletters,
including Jamie's newsletter, which I now subscribe to.
Yes.
I'm honored.
Yes, I get up every morning, like around four o'clock.
And while I'm having my coffee,
usually a lot of newsletters come in,
like they'll start sending them around midnight.
So you've already got them in your inbox.
Yeah.
And so I'll just start reading the newsletters.
And it's so much free advice. And don't just start reading the newsletters and it's so much free advice.
And don't just think about celebrity newsletters or people magazine newsletters or things like
that.
If you're involved in an industry or interested in industry, go to companies that are big
in that industry and sign up for their newsletter, because almost always they will give away
their trade secrets in their newsletters.
And I will read it, and I often joke now,
because now there's AI and chat GBT,
and you're getting so much information that way these days.
I think I was probably the original large language model
for our company, because I would read so much content
in the course of the day from from pop culture to medical journals to you know you know what's happening in the
news and every day I would assimilate all of that information from so many
different areas of the world and by the time my team got up I would have
distilled it all down into like there here are the three things you need to
read today and they would all have it sitting in their emails in the morning.
It's sort of a joke in the business that nobody on Team Beekman wakes up without a text from
Brent with an article always forwarded.
But I think that is the word of wisdom I would like to leave people with who are watching.
If you are interested, if you're starting a company in some particular business, find the leaders in that business, go to their corporate website, sign up for their newsletters,
their corporate communications.
A lot of them even have podcasts themselves now.
Sign up for it.
You will learn everything that you need to know.
So good.
I want to talk about the 12 principles that are in the book.
And it's so much wisdom that I think applies to you
no matter what stage you are in an idea or a dream
or a business or a hope or a goal,
or you just wanna have great lessons
that fundamentally change how you think of things,
how much joy you have in your day.
Can you talk about principle number one,
chop your own wood and it will warm you twice.
With us learning to code our own website,
learning to take our own product photography,
doing everything ourselves,
when you learn to do something yourself,
as you grow and you hire more people on your team,
you will always know the basics of what they're doing.
So even when you hire a really specific,
like head of digital, social, you know,
the most granular thing,
you at least know the basics of what they're doing.
So chopping your own wood, warming it twice,
if you can do it yourself, no matter how big you grow,
you'll still continue to be able to contribute.
Because you warm yourself by first chopping and then you warm yourself a second time in
the burning of the wood.
Right, right.
That's right.
It's so good because then someone's out and you can step in for it or someone's not doing
their job and you know how to do their job.
Kind of, yeah.
You can ask the stupid question.
You can ask the dumb question.
We're king of asking dumb questions because a lot of times in your organization, in a
business, people get really granular about the small things and the solution is just
a really big thing.
So asking a dumb question sometimes brings to light the very common sense thing that
nobody is talking about.
Isn't that so good?
Because people will get very inside baseball and they forget they're in their world.
It's like, what about with zooming way out?
What if the customer's actually feeling this?
Or what if we're forgetting to tell the customer
what this is or why they should care?
Principle number two, when the well is dry,
we know the worth of water,
how to budget, allocate, and be scrappy.
That's right, because you never know what you had
until you don't have it.
And we always said that, you know,
the way we started Beakman was out of desperation
and desperation is the best motivation.
So when you are, when your tank is empty,
when you're at your darkest moment,
that's when you're gonna get the most creative.
And then you understand the power of every single thing
that comes from that moment and how important they are.
And would you say that when you're on your tightest budget?
You're the most creative?
Absolutely.
There's a reason the phrase is out of the box thinking
because when you're in a box,
you really can't come up with anything new.
And I love because we have even instilled this
into the new CEO at our company.
And so today on our call that we were taking in the car
on the drive here, the team missed their numbers
for last month and she's like,
okay, well you have $0 now to spend
to get yourself out of this hole,
how are you gonna do it?
And then so the team went off and now they're right now
as we're sitting here doing this,
they're ideating on how they can do it with $0.
we're sitting here doing this, they're ideating on how they can do it with zero dollars. Principal number three, a bad workman blames his tools. You can always
find a way to blame someone else for your problems and you always have to
look at how you might be the problem, have the humility to accept the fact
that something that you are doing is the problem, not your
computer program, not one of your employees.
It might be you.
And I think as a founder or as the head of a team or of an entire organization, you just
have to be willing to look at yourself first before blaming anyone else.
And another thing we talk about is it's really powerful to take responsibility for things,
even if it's not your issue.
When there's a disagreement at work or something didn't sell or a campaign went wrong, everybody's
very focused on finding out who, pointing fingers, right?
Finding out who caused the problem.
If you just walk into a room and you say, you know what, I'll take responsibility for
that, everyone is so grateful that you've done that. Whether or not it was your responsibility or not,
that you can move forward at that.
Well, that's leadership.
That's leadership.
I love what you said too.
You didn't say, it's my fault.
You didn't assign blame to anybody.
You're like, I'll take responsibility for that,
which is such a beautiful thing.
I remember a study on hiring.
There was one type of employee
that no matter what, never works out.
And they sort of listed the options
Is it one that's lazy one that might have a bad attitude?
One that's maybe doesn't have strong enough skill set when that has a victim mentality and they listed all these options
And they said in every case an employee is saveable and can work out and the only one they said
Almost never works out uniformly is an employee that has a victim mentality.
That's always saying it's someone else's fault
that anything that happens, they blame or have an excuse.
It changed how I interviewed it at Cosmetics.
And to this day, how I interview,
where in the interview,
they really try to understand different situations
and see if I hear that leadership that,
well, here's how I took responsibility for that. Or when they say like, I really dropped the ball here
and here's what I did about it versus that person
and that and this and that life circle
and everything's just someone else's fault
and I found that really interesting.
And so I love what you said
about a bad workman blames his tools.
That's right.
And it makes you a good role model too,
because if an employee says, oh, my leader is willing
to take responsibility as the leader for an issue that I had, it makes them not only want
to work harder, it makes them not afraid to fail.
Take risks.
Yes, that's so good.
Okay, number four in goat wisdom, out now, out now.
It's so good.
Make hay while the sun shines.

And now more of this incredible conversation together.
Number four and goat wisdom out now out now.
It's so good.
Make hay while the sun shines.
Well, this is classic farm.
You have to know we should help people understand why this is important. That, this is classic farm. You have to know, we should help people understand
why this is important.
That is actually a true thing.
When you cut hay in the field,
it has to sit in the field for three days
before you can bale it.
It has to dry out.
So make hay while the sun shines.
If it rains on the hay and you bale it
and you put it in the barn,
it will start to ferment
and it will set your barn on fire.
So making hay
while the sun shines is a true thing. You have to wait for three days of sunshine in
order to make the hay. So the way we apply it in our business is when things are going
well, you have to spend as much time figuring out why they are doing well as you do when
something goes poorly. There's a phrase people use, post-mortem.
So when something doesn't go well,
a team will have a post-mortem meeting
to figure out what doesn't go well.
We believe you have to have a post-success meeting
every time.
You can't just pretend that success was luck
or success happened or you planned everything perfectly
so that's why it was successful.
You have to look at that success,
figure out exactly what made it a success so that then you it was successful. You have to look at that success, figure out exactly what made a success so that
then you can replicate it.
And so that's making hay while the sun shines.
If it's going well, make sure you know why it's going well.
So you can keep it going.
You're so right.
People often only have a discussion when something's wrong or they only carve
out time when something didn't go well, but like really, why is it going well?
That's right.
Number five, an empty vessel makes the most noise.
Okay, now think about this.
This is so important.
Think about this, if you're out working in your garden
and you put the hose into a bucket,
it's always super noisy, right?
When the water is first filling up the bucket,
but by the time it gets to the top,
it's not making hardly any noise, right?
This is so important in life,
and this isn't just for business, this is for anybody,
and social media has made this so important right now.
We all see people doing really well.
We see other businesses that go from zero to 200 million overnight.
And the only reason they're successful is because they're very loud.
They're out in the media a lot or they're paying for media attention or if you're just
a personal on social media, they're only posting the very best pictures of themselves.
And we grow jealous of those companies sometimes,
or you grow jealous of somebody posting
about the perfect family.
This is human nature.
But we've learned over the years that the noisiest people,
the noisiest business, also don't have the core.
They don't have the roots, they don't have the soul.
So they actually wind up disappearing.
So when you get jealous of something
that's getting a lot of attention,
really look at it and say,
because sometimes it is they are getting worthy attention,
but really look at it and say,
what are they getting attention for?
Are they getting attention for getting attention?
Are they getting attention for their soul?
Yeah, which is so easy to confuse those two
to your point with how social media looks.
It's like, oh, everyone's winning in five minutes.
Amazing, I'm doing it all wrong.
I'm actually working really, really hard.
I must be doing it all wrong.
I'm actually really caring about customers.
I must be doing it all wrong.
Okay, number six, don't kill the goose
that lays the golden egg.
How to find your purpose.
That's right.
And for us, our purpose is kindness.
And we weave it through every single aspect of the company.
And I think that's what founders really need to do first is understand what is their purpose.
Why do they really want this business to happen?
And then how to make sure that you maintain that and nurture that
throughout the course of your company no matter how big you grow because that is
your guiding star and your true north and you don't want to lose that.
So many people, I remember we used to get so many people come to you at Cosmetics and
we couldn't afford to match their salary but they didn't feel like they knew
their purpose. They didn't feel like in their job even sometimes in really big
amazing brands they didn't know why they knew their purpose. They didn't feel like in their job, even sometimes in really big, amazing brands,
they didn't know why they were doing what they were doing
or they didn't feel like they knew the mission really well.
They just felt like, okay, yes, I have to hit sales numbers
or yes, I have to hit my Bendel's goal,
whatever it might be, but for them internally,
it's like, well, why am I doing what am I doing?
Beyond the paycheck, right?
Just think that's really powerful.
A lot of people miss that.
It's shocking how many people miss this.
They do. Shocking.
And what they don't understand is that purpose
is what's going to help them reach their goal.
If they don't understand what made the business successful,
they're not going to hit that goal.
Right. And we're fortunate now that,
because people know that our purpose
is putting more kindness out into the world,
whether that is kindness to your skin,
kindness to your mental health, kindness to your community. We have people applying for our company who
also want to spread kindness. But if you are the leader of a company that doesn't have
that type of purpose, I think when you're talking to your employees or your potential
hires, you have to ask them what their individual purpose is in life, and then say, okay, I'm
going to help you achieve
that purpose at the same time,
and utilize that purpose to make our organization
as successful as possible.
So the onus is on you to help someone identify
their purpose and then utilize that purpose
to make the entire organization as successful as possible.
It's almost like they have that internal why for themselves,
but then they also understand
all of Beekman's why and that mission that's bigger than themselves in a lot of ways, and
then they have that double.
Number seven, and I'm actually going to stop.
I'm not going to go through all 12 because number one, the ones we're going through now
are inside the book, Goat Wisdom, which is out now.
You dive so deep and there's so
many times, you should have seen the number of times I called Paolo, my husband, and I'm
like, you've got to hear this. This happened to us. Do you remember? Do you remember when
this happened? Do you remember when we fell flat on our face and we thought this was going
to be a disaster? Do you remember when we had no money and had to figure out? I mean,
it was just, there's so much good stuff that you guys have put in the last 15 plus years,
and someone's gonna be able to just absorb all of it
in a book, and I think that is the biggest blessing.
So the-
I just have to tell one little story.
Yeah.
Because the same thing with your book, believe it.
Yeah.
If you could see my copy, I'm still a highlighter
for my medical school days.
I have so many lines in blue highlighter of
your book. Same.
And were you like, same.
Same.
Same.
You're like, I feel your pain. I was told no that way too. I thought I was never going
to make, I mean, there's just so many emotions we go through. And the thing that I love so
much about how granular you guys get inside the book is that it's just going to help people
feel less alone because social media makes it feel like you've got it all wrong and you
suck.
Yeah.
Now that really is 90% of it is feeling like you are not different than the rest of the
world, that you are having the same issues as everyone else.
That gives you the confidence to take the next step.
Yeah.
And I love the personal stories you guys share and the insights.
You peel the curtains back and you say, here's what really happens.
And it's going to help people feel also and see that they have what it takes,
whether they also deal with anxiety and depression, whether they are perfectionists,
whether they are whatever it is or they are obsessed with details
and they
feel like they're a bottleneck but are they does that really you know it just
you go into the nuances and and that's what I love it and because you've done
it because you've done it you've actually built the thing you've actually
seen the business at all phases your wisdom that you share is hard-earned
it's gonna help so many people.
And the last one I'll ask you about number seven.
Now there's a lot more.
You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make it drink.
Yeah, I mean, that's so true.
Oftentimes we want something to happen.
We can bring a customer or we can bring a partner
in a business.
We can tell them all the rational reasons why they should do something or partner with us or buy something or whatever
You tell them all the rational reasons
But at the end of the day if you don't give them that emotional trigger to pull the trigger
They're not going to do it and that can be really frustrating sometimes, especially if you're in business and you're a very
not going to do it. And that can be really frustrating sometimes, especially if you're in business and you're a very rational person. You're like, why aren't I succeeding? I'm
doing everything right. I'm doing everything by the book. But at the end of the day, there
always has to be an emotional connection. And I know you've found this in your career
when you're trying to woo a retail partner,
you might be exactly what they need for their store.
But unless you make that connection,
unless they like you, personally like you,
they can't actually pull the trigger,
they won't pull the trigger.
So for us, that wisdom is about knowing how to imbue
the emotions that people need out of any transaction,
make sure you are fulfilling them emotionally,
not just rationally.
And that goes back to what we were saying earlier
in the interview about if you're negotiating
with someone across the table,
or if you're trying to sell a product to someone,
you have to understand what their needs are.
Because you can take the horse to the water,
but if the horse isn't thirsty,
they're not going to drink it.
So you have to say, is this person thirsty at this time for this knowledge, for this
product?
Or make them thirsty.
Or make them thirsty, yes.
Or explain why they need to be thirsty.
My water is really good for them.
Any of that is so good.
There's a lot of people right now that I know feel stuck in their business or this or that.
I've seen it on QVC 50 million times where there's a great product, a really talented founder
or successful salesperson and they're not getting traction.
And you're watching it and the person at home
doesn't know how it meets their needs,
literally, also emotionally.
And you just watch that piece missing
and very
few people get this.
And you go deep into how to do it inside Goat Wisdom, how to build a truly, truly, truly
great business.
I am so grateful that you guys are sharing all of this.
Thank you for the love and the kindness that you spread in this world.
Thank you for everything that you're doing to help heal humanity through love.
