The Josh Innes Show - Could Jalen Hurts Be Benched?
Episode Date: December 10, 2025The question seems preposterous on the surface. But, it's not unfair to ask. WIP asked this question of Eagles HC Nick Sirianni. I know we've said this before, but I've never seen anything like the ...QB situation in Philadelphia. It's bonkers. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Oh boy!
You got to love when you have a quarterback
controversy in Philadelphia,
which is pretty much always the case
because there's always a quarterback controversy in Philadelphia.
Jesus could be the quarterback in Philadelphia
and somebody would still want Tanner McKee to be the guy.
But apparently, Nick Siriani was on WIP,
and on WIP, they asked him if Jalen Hertz is going to continue to be the quarterback.
I just want you to think about this for a second.
This guy has been to two Super Bowls.
He has been to two Super Bowls.
And oh, by the way, we can sit there and say the guy's not great because he's not.
They still should have won the game against the charges,
if not for the fact that the diva wide receiver who cares about his numbers a ton
dropped a couple of easily catchable balls that could have won them the game.
But anyway, they asked Nick Siriani if Jalen Hertz would be the quarterback on Sunday.
Let's take a quick break and then we will play that audio.
That is after these messages.
All right. Here we go. So this is on the WIPA morning show. I know that this is not a popular take or not even a take that people care about maybe. I despise radio stations that just call their shows the afternoon show or the midday show or the morning show. Your name should have your fucking name on it. Like your show should have your name on it.
This is like the WLLZ morning radio program with Josh. No, it's the fucking Josh and his show. Like that's the way these things show.
should be. But anyway, WIP is weird in that way. Anywho, so here is Nick Siriani on the phone
with the morning fellas at WIP. Is Jalen definitely your starter Sunday?
Yeah, absolutely. Is there a possibility later this season if he continues to struggle that
you can make a change at the quarterback spot? No, I think that's ridiculous. You know, I think,
you know, Jalen Hertz, I know every time I go out in that field with Jalen Hertz as our quarterback,
we have a chance to win the game.
And that's, you know, that's...
And thinking about it this way.
They are still a team that is leading the division.
Are they going to win the Super Bowl?
No.
Their offense stinks.
Is the quarterback part of the reason why the offense stinks?
Yes.
Is the play calling part of it?
Yes.
Is the offensive line play part of it?
Yes.
Is the diva wide receiver dropping a touchdown that would have changed the game part of it?
Yes.
But it is ridiculous.
Like, it's weird.
Again, the thing about Jalen Hertz is there is such a blur.
blurred line involving Hertz because Hertz is a winner.
We noted it.
His winning percentage is like 20th all time among NFL quarterbacks, right?
The guy has been to two Super Bowls.
He's won one.
He should have won two.
Like, it is bizarre to think that we are having this debate, but then it would also be bizarre
if the question wasn't asked.
Like, I've never seen a situation like this before.
It's nuts.
That's something that's been proven.
you know we've won a lot a lot of football games and again we don't we don't ever go into
something in a science this is a team game um you know this is the most ultimate team game so
when you with you know you win together as a team you lose together as a team it's never
just one thing you know i kind of said that you know last week or the week also though yes you
win together as a team you lose together as a team but that doesn't mean you don't binge
people like there's obviously players that do their job and players who don't so like that's coaches speak
bullshit we went as a team we lose as a team blah blah blah the quarterback is the most important
person on the team and if the quarterback's not getting the job done you bench the quarterback
what you cannot do again this is the most unique situation it is the perfect storm why is it the
perfect storm because you've got a quarterback that none of us really think is particularly good he's
fine and he's worked for what they've needed him to be and he just wins a shit ton of games
even right now.
You know how many teams have more wins than the Eagles right now?
Let's take a look.
How many teams in the NFL currently have more wins than the Eagles?
The Eagles have eight and they've fallen off a cliff the last three weeks.
You know how many teams in the NFC currently have more wins than eight?
The answer is four.
Four teams have more wins than eight.
You know how many teams in the AFC have more wins than eight?
Let's see, one, two, three, four.
There are eight teams in the NFL who have more wins than the Philadelphia Eagles.
right so like it's preposterous to sit there and say okay this guy stinks again they've won
eight games this year and i'm not saying they're good they stink on offense they are not
going to win the super bowl because their offense stinks and yes part of the problem is the
quarterback makes some bad decisions but how on earth could you ever justify benching a guy
who's been to two super bowls one one of them should have won two how do you justify that how do you
justify that and say, oh, here's Tanner McKee.
Why? Because the guy puts up big numbers in the preseason.
Like, how do you justify that? When you think about it that way, it sounds absurd.
But then you say to yourself, well, the offense does suck, and I don't really believe
Jalen Hertz is good. And sometimes it feels like they win in spite of him. So maybe it makes
sense. But then you also tell yourself, that's fucking stupid.
because Jalen Hertz,
his winning percentage is 20th best all time.
Again, the name of the game is winning.
And if A.J. Brown doesn't drop two passes
and that game against the Chargers,
they probably win that game against the Chargers.
Now, on the other hand, there's some games they shouldn't have won
that they won earlier.
This is not a very good football team.
Defensively, they're very good.
Offensive line is not great.
Play calling is not great.
Sequin Barclay's falling off a cliff.
He's on a milk carton at this point.
I guess, and we have this discussion seemingly every week.
First of all, we'll say this.
I have no problem with WIP asking that question.
Like, I don't think it's click-bait and I don't think it's like trying to create drama where there is no drama.
Only because you're in Philadelphia, everything is drama.
Now, a lot of it's created by the media there.
There is not a media in the country that is good.
at creating drama as the Philadelphia media is.
So that is what it is.
But the question's not unfair because that's the talking point.
The offense stinks.
They're not good.
They've lost three games in a row.
They blew the lead to the Cowboys.
They had the great first quarter against the Cowboys fell off a cliff.
They were a no-show offensively for the most part against the Chargers.
These are real things.
They were a no-show early on against the Rams and had to put together a miracle rally
and block a field goal to beat the Rams earlier this year.
They've had games like they beat the Rams.
the Lions 16 to 9 or whatever it was.
So, like, they're off.
They let the Lions, whose defense is not very good, hold them to 16 points, okay?
Like, they, the issues are legit.
So the question is not unfair.
Now, would you really like to see Tanner McKee over Jalen Hertz?
Two-time Super Bowl quarterback for Tanner fucking McKee?
Like, that's the biggest question you have to ask yourself.
It ain't like Mike Vic is sitting behind him, you know?
This isn't like, oh, there's a guy that's greatly accomplished hell.
It's not even like Nick Foles is sitting behind him.
It's Tanner McKee, get real.
So it's not an unfair question.
Asking the head coach if the quarterback's job is safe
is not an unfair question when you've lost three games in a row.
But it is an unfair question when you've been to two Super Bowls and won one of them.
Like it's, I don't know, man.
I've never seen anything like this.
There's never been a situation.
Like there's been drama.
Like, you know, we experienced it there whenever, you know, Carson Wentz,
would have won the MVP had he not gotten hurt, right?
And who knows?
I love the butterfly effect type of thing, like what happens if Carson Wince never gets hurt?
Maybe they never win the Super Bowl.
Maybe there's no legend of Nick Foles and no statue.
And maybe Carson Wins becomes an all-time great that just doesn't win Super Bowls,
but he's still the quarterback right now.
I don't know.
I love that type of thing.
But everybody knows that that dude was going to win the MVP had he not gotten hurt
against the Rams in 2017, right?
And there was drama around that because in the next couple of years.
It's, hey, you got Nick Foles. Why would you let Nick Foles walk? Nick Foles is great.
It was the same drama after Nick Foles led Chip Kelly's team to the postseason.
And then the next year, it's like, well, Nick Foles isn't the guy.
They tried it and then they wanted to binge him.
Like there's always drama in Philadelphia, particularly around the quarterback position.
That's just the way it is.
And no city creates drama as well as Philadelphia creates drama, right?
That's just reality.
So the question's not unfair, but it just seems asinine, doesn't it?
like when you really step back and think about it.
Because, yes, the offense does stink.
And the most important player on the offense is the quarterback.
And the offense is dreadful.
So it's not unfathomable to think that maybe they make a move.
But then it is unfathomable to think that because you've got a team that was just in the Super Bowl won the Super Bowl.
And the quarterback was the guy that won the Super Bowl.
I've never experienced anything like this.
I've never seen anything.
It's fascinating.
I can't.
I cannot think of a scenario.
And again, we can go back to the T-Bub.
and the Jimmer Fredettes and the Lynn Sanities that were fleeting moments that were fun and wacky and they sold T-shirts.
But at the end of the day, it wasn't sustainable and it didn't result in championships for anybody.
It was just a fun, fleeting, brief moment in time.
This has resulted in championships.
This is resulted in Super Bowl appearances.
You know, I've never seen anything like this.
This needs to be studied.
I've, the fact that you've got a team that is as good as they've been,
and he's won as many games as he's won, and he's not very good, he's okay, he's mid.
Yet there's questions of a two-time Super Bowl quarterback being benched for Tanner McKee.
For a team that's going to win the division.
With a coach that everybody seems to hate because I think he's a boob.
Like, I've never seen anything like this before.
And it's heightened because it's in Philadelphia.
If this were happening in Jacksonville right now, I don't even believe there'd be a controversy.
They would laugh at you.
If in Houston or Jacksonville or Indianapolis or wherever, right, Carolina, commonville, USA, New Orleans, right?
If you have a dude that's been to two Super Bowls and won one of them, the idea that you would even entertain benching this guy for Tanner McKee.
would be laughed at.
Like, people wouldn't even be talking about it.
The fact that it's Philadelphia lends itself to this.
The whole thing is wild.
It's just, it's hard to explain.
Like, try explaining that to some Martians.
Like, Martians come down from Planet Falcon,
and they come down and you try to explain to them the situation.
They're like, so the point of the game is to win, right?
Yeah.
Point of the game is to win Super Bowls, right?
Yeah.
This guy won a Super Bowl, right?
Yeah.
And he wins 66% of his games, right?
Yeah.
Then why the fuck do you want to play Tanner McKee?
Nanoo, Nanoo.
I don't it is baffling and again I'm not against WIP for asking the question ask the question like it's you have to like you'd be negligent if you didn't ask the question but man it's it's bizarre like the whole situation all right more to come
