Learn more at aboutamazon.ca. All right. So let's dive into this now. So the story about Harry Callis's widow and how she's angry with the team. First off, let's play a couple. Let's just get the commercials out of the way. And let's get right into the shit.
Starting point is 00:00:32 All right. So let's read more details on the story. The iconic announcer's widow, Eileen Callis, told Matt Breen of the Philadelphia Inquirer that the move is a betrayal of his legacy. Taking down that sign takes away everything he did for the city, Callis told the inquire. I think they betrayed Harry. It's not about me. It's about what they're doing to Harry. I think they betrayed him for everything he did for them.
Starting point is 00:00:55 Look, ma'am, I understand where you're coming from and your husband's been dead for 16 years or ever long. It's been 17 years, and I get it. I'm on your side that it sucks. I don't believe that the team has betrayed Harry Callis. First of, there's a statue of the guy outside. They play the high hopes thing every time they win. They play the, it's out of air. At least they used to at the ballpark.
Starting point is 00:01:21 So, like, the idea that they've betrayed the legacy of Harry Callis is preposterous. But, again, this is what you open yourself up to if you're the Phillies and you take something that's been called the same thing for 22 years, and to make a fucking buck, you decide to change the name. You're opening yourself up to the negative. And is the negative backlash you're getting worth the money you're going to get for that naming rights deal? And maybe it is. Maybe you don't give a shit. I don't know. Eileen said she has been receiving $20,000 a year for the use of her husband's likeness and that she will receive that amount again this year for the final time. She says the team told her they will
Starting point is 00:01:59 stop paying in 2027, but expect to keep celebrating wins by showing a clip of callous singing High Hopes by Frank Sinatra on Fanavision. However, she says that she won't let the team do that unless they continue making payments. Okay. So it's not about the money. She says, it's not about me. It's not about the money. They're not going to pay her $20,000 a year anymore to use his likeness and all that for the bar.
Starting point is 00:02:26 yet she wants to charge them to use the high hopes thing, which I don't know that, and I don't know how any of this works, I don't know that they have to pay anything. I don't think they do. I don't think that she can just say, hey, don't use my husband's video on the board. I'm fairly certain that's their intellectual property because unless that's the, I mean, imagine it's the intellectual property of the team in the same way that. And now, it depends on the video, I guess. What video do they use? Do they use something that was officially on a game broadcast or what? Like, I don't know if they own the rights to that.
Starting point is 00:03:05 Let me see. Let me look up the video. Because if I recall the video, I thought it was a video that was in a press box of him singing, but maybe I'm wrong. Let's see here. Harry Callis High Hopes. Let's see. I'm sure someone's posted this. Let's see.
Starting point is 00:03:21 Harry Callis High Hopes at Citizens Bank. Park. Let's see if we can see a video. So that's from inside. I forgot what event this was, but let's see. That's not going to do anything. Let's see here. Okay, singing High Hope's. That was 16 years ago. Geez. Yeah, these are all tribute videos from 2009. So wherever they got that video from. Oh, here we go. High Hope. So here we go. High Hope. So, yeah, these are all tribute videos from 2009. So wherever they got that video from. Oh, here we go. hopes after Phillies win. This is 7-4-16 area. My gran. Hold tight. Yeah, I don't know that they own the rights to that or not. Like, I would imagine they do, but I don't know. Let's see. Let's see.
Starting point is 00:04:26 The right. He's got the sun at the right. It looks like it was filmed at some sort of team function. So it's not like it was on a television broadcast where there's a clear owner of that. So I don't, so can they do that? Can like a woman? Can a woman be like, you can't use my fucking husband's likeness anymore because I'm super pissed that you change the name of this stupid bar in this ballpark? Again, all of this could have been avoided. You did not need to do any of this, Phillies.
Starting point is 00:05:23 None of it. But anyway, let's continue. Let's see. They'll say, Eileen Callis got rid of it. She's money hungry. said. That's what they always said. Flip it on me. I don't mind if they have things. They just have to pay for it. It's intellectual property and they know that. Again, like, this just sounds like the nonsensical ravings of an old lady, but the Phillies
Starting point is 00:05:49 say they'll do plenty to honor Callis's legacy. I get it. There's an emotion to that, said the Phillies managing partner John Middleton. But there's a seven-foot statue of the guy in left field. The broadcast booth is named for him. There's a plaque. I mean, I know it's not like we're not honoring his legacy, and it's not like we're not going to continue to honor his legacy going in the future. However, Calais says most of those tributes aren't something fans can appreciate. Well, I'm fairly fucking certain they can appreciate a seven-foot goddamn tall statue, lady. My God.
Starting point is 00:06:21 They go, oh, well, we're going to have the statue. What are they going to do with the statue, Callis said? I'll take it. I'll send in a truck. Pick it up and get it out if they want that out to. Jesus Christ, lady. Look, this lady's fucking nuts. Bless her heart.
Starting point is 00:06:37 This is just the, this is just rantines of a crazy lady. Like, I want to sympathize. And again, the Phillies could have avoided all of this if they just would have found a way to keep the goddamn guy's name on the thing. Both, let's see, both of Calas's sons, Todd and Kane said earlier in the week that they had no issue with the removal of Harry the Case. However, their mother says that they have good reason not to complain. Todd is a broadcaster for the Astros and Kane maintains release. relationship with the Philly. How did I feel?
Starting point is 00:07:09 I felt betrayed for Harry, Eileen said, because he gave his all to the city and to the fans. He gave it all. I didn't feel betrayed by them ever. That's who he loved. So in my opinion, there's always compromise. I thought of the ghost energy deck in Harry
Starting point is 00:07:25 the K's. Everyone is happy. It's a win-when. Look, I agree with you, lady. That would have been a nice move. I don't know why they couldn't have done that other than the fact that I would guess, I guess on this now is that Ghost Energy is like, no, we want the full-on name on it because we want people to call it Ghost Energy deck. Maybe so.
Starting point is 00:07:45 They should have been smarter in that and said, let's not do that because you've got to know the fucking history. That's dumb. For us, the opportunity in left field is the passing of the torture handing the ball off, said Ryan Hughes of Ghost Energy. We're hoping to bring some new energy to the space while also never forgetting Harry Callis and the legacy that he left. So that's from awful announcing.
Starting point is 00:08:11 Look, man, this lady's fucking nuts. And then she's basically saying that her kids, that her kids aren't saying anything or Harry's kids aren't saying anything because they work in baseball. Like, I don't think that Todd Callis's professional life is going to be ruined. If Todd Callis comes out and said, Hey, man, why did you take my dad's name off of the ballpark? Like, what's going to happen?
Starting point is 00:08:33 Is he banished from baseball? Are they going to put him in a hole somewhere? Like, come on, man. Really? And, like, that's the thing. Like, I think this lady, she, I don't know how old this lady is, but she seems like a crazy old lady. Like, everything I'm hearing just is the ravings and rantings of a crazy lady person.
Starting point is 00:08:54 Which, hey, I feel for you. Your husband's dead. He's been dead for 17 years. His name's been on this bar for all these years. I get it. The biggest takeaway I have from this, the two biggest. One, this lady's fucking. and nuts. But two is the Phillies could have avoided all of this. Like you listen to the guys,
Starting point is 00:09:14 like if you read the comment from Ghost Energy, for us, the opportunity in left field is the passing of the torture handing the ball off, said Ryan Hughes of Ghost Energy. We're hoping to bring some new energy to the space while also never forgetting Harry Cowles. Then you should have, if you know this, and obviously you're just saying this now because people are, and I would imagine this is a response to this, you should have been smart enough to know from the jump that this was going to have a negative backlash. And does it hurt your business? I don't know.
Starting point is 00:09:46 Probably not. I'd never even heard of ghost energy before this shit. So what do I know? I had never heard. Now I've heard of ghost energy. So maybe, you know, no press is bad press. But if you're trying to have a relationship in the ballpark with people and you want people to associate your product with a positive in the ballpark,
Starting point is 00:10:03 But I don't think the move is to just have your name associated with a negative thing. And this is a negative thing. And it's not positive. So, anyway, but this woman also seems fucking nuts. Like, I don't know if she even has the rights to say. Like, I'm genuinely curious now about this. Let me check really quick. Somebody who will know is a, is gypsy.
Starting point is 00:10:33 Let me see. Hey, Gypsy? I'm right here. What's on your mind? Hey, Bay. So if the, I don't know if you've seen this story about Harry Callis, the former voice of the Phillies. They've taken his name off a bar at the stadium and his wife is very upset. And now she wants to keep them from using a video that they have been using forever of him singing high hopes after the Phillies win. Can she keep them from using that video? It's a pretty emotional situation, especially with a legacy like that. Legally, though, it can get complicated.
Starting point is 00:11:11 If the team already had clear rights to that footage, like through a contract or licensing agreement, they likely can still use it. But if there's any uncertainty or if his likeness wasn't fully cleared, she could try to challenge it. Often, teens want to avoid bad PR, so they might negotiate. Well, the thing is, they've already got the bad PR. But so do you have any information? Like, do you know if the team already has the license?
Starting point is 00:11:35 licensee rights to that video? The Philadelphia Phillies have been playing a video of the late Harry Callis singing high hoax after wins, but his widow is upset because their agreement for using his likeness will end in 2027. She has been receiving around $20,000 per year for this. Whether the Phillies can keep using the video depends on who owns the recording and likeness rights. And if the Phillies want to continue, they might need to renegotiate after that date. It's a mix of contracts, likeness rights, and performance licensing. Okay, well that makes
Starting point is 00:12:17 Okay, see, and that's basically what I was saying. I would assume that they've that they've got rights to use that. So even if his wife was like, nope, you can't fucking do it unless you pay me, I don't think they have any, like, I don't know that she has any leg to stand on in that. I would assume she doesn't. That would be my guess. But, anyway.
Starting point is 00:12:41 But she seems bad shit. More to come.
