The Josh Innes Show - I Hate Brian Kelly

Episode Date: October 20, 2025

I'm officially out on Brian Kelly. His existence has sucked all the fun out of LSU Football. I'm at a point where I don't enjoy watching the games. The worst part is I don't care if they win or lo...se...apathy. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Hello everybody. Welcome in, All Up in this podcast. Hello. How is your day? Well, it's obviously not going, well, really at all because it's 4.30 in the morning, so I'm guessing that none of you are up right now. I am up before the rooster. And I do it because I need to put out content for you because I love you and I care about you and I need to make money. So, anyway, though, I wouldn't even say a great day of football yesterday. There were a couple of games that were pretty good. You know, the Giants and Broncos ended up being pretty good in the fourth quarter, even though I hate Sean Payton and I hoped he would lose. God, I hate that guy so much. Oh, shit. And I was happy that they were getting their asses kicked. And they did exactly what the Saints used to do.
Starting point is 00:01:48 They'd get behind and they'd rally in the fourth quarter only to blow it. But this time they had enough time left on the fucking clock to go down and win the damn thing. And, God, it pissed me off more than you could imagine. But anyway, let's play a couple of commercials and let's get into some stuff. And I didn't always hate Brian Kelly. I felt that Brian Kelly was somebody who kind of got a bad rap, but it was kind of unwarranted from people. And I still think it is to a degree. I think there's a lot of people across the country who just dislike Brian Kelly.
Starting point is 00:04:29 And it doesn't mean he's a bad football coach. It just means they dislike him, right? The problem I'm running into right now is I don't think Brian Kelly is a very good football coach, especially at LSU. And at this point, I hate the guy. LSU lost again this week. They lost to Vanderbilt. And it wasn't really an upset because Vanderbilt was favored. But the fact that Vanderbilt is favored against LSU, when LSU spent eight.
Starting point is 00:04:54 $18 million in the transfer portal, when LSU has a $10 million a year coach, when LSU has a fifth year senior quarterback, when LSU is an underdog to fucking Vanderbilt, that's a problem. them. And then when you're an underdog to Vanderbilt and you go out and you get fully outworked and outclassed by Vanderbilt and outcoached by Vanderbilt and outgained by Vanderbilt, and out played by Vanderbilt, a team that does not have anywhere close to the level of talent that you have on your roster, nor do they have the money invested in the program that you do, and you get worked. You get worked. The game was a lot worse than the score would indicate. And what we saw on Saturday for LSU is the moment that a lot of us who are kind of on the fence about Brian Kelly and are like, hey, maybe the guy can get it done. I think he gets a bad rap.
Starting point is 00:05:49 People like that. And that was me. That was me. I felt the guy kind of got an unfair rap and people use certain things against him just because they hate him on a personal level for whatever reason they hate him on a personal level, whether it's the fake accent thing or the thing that I think is bullshit is when people are like, you know, Brian Kelly killed a kid and blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. But now I find myself saying all of those things because I hate this guy so much because he is seemingly destroying LSU. LSU should never be in a situation where LSU is an underdog to Vanderbilt. I don't care if Diego Pavia is the quarterback or not.
Starting point is 00:06:28 LSU should never be an underdog in that situation because LSU has every resource possible to be a success. That's why LSU has won three national championships, and that's why LSU has been to four championship games. That's why LSU has won a lot of SEC championships in the last quarter century. That's why LSU is putting dudes out into the – you know, putting dudes in the league in a high clip. It should never be a situation where LSU is an underdog to Vanderbilt. And not only was LSU an underdog to Vanderbilt, LSU was outworked and outclassed and out-coached. and outplayed by Vanderbilt. And that was the moment.
Starting point is 00:07:12 That was the game. And there were so many other times where I could have felt this way. But, hey, unless you've gone nine and three, nine and three, eight and four. But then you got Brian Kelly coming out before the year and saying, hey, championship or bust, basically. And now it's bust. Because you got outclassed by Ole Miss. And then this week, you just got pecker slapped around by Vanderbilt. and your offense has been terrible all year
Starting point is 00:07:37 with a fifth year senior quarterback and now it feels like we're just stuck because it feels like it's going nowhere and I'm looking at this story in the USA today Hot seat Brian Kelly showed us who he is and LSU didn't believe him this is by Blake Topmire of the USA Today let's see what Blake has to say
Starting point is 00:07:56 let's see Brian Kelly showed us who he was at Notre Dame LSU didn't believe him It bought that Kelly could be something that he'd never proven to be, a shark suited for the SEC's ruthless waters. And now that Kelly's continued to be exactly who he's always shown he is, a steady winner who consistently loses big games, whose fault is that? Athletic director Scott Woodward hired a program builder in a stable hand, but not someone who wins in the stiffest clashes. LSU hired a big-name coach in 2021, not a big game coach. All Kelly's done in four seasons at LSU has be exactly who he is. If he keeps it up, that'll get him fired.
Starting point is 00:08:35 It is maddening. And then you look around the league, around college football, and you see all these coaches getting fired, some warranted, some not. Sometimes you get these schools that, you know, think they're bigger than they actually are. But the thing is, LSU is. Because LSU has every resource. LSU has maybe the greatest talent pool ever in Louisiana per capita. It is the greatest talent pool ever.
Starting point is 00:08:58 and you've got a fan base that'll put 100,000 people in. But the worst thing has happened to these people, and I am one of them. We just don't care anymore. We are apathetic. We don't believe in you. And there is a part of me that thinks that at times, a lot of the time, college football fans are very overreactive, and college fans are too quick to want to fire somebody.
Starting point is 00:09:21 Because I think if you get into the business of firing people every two or three years, you become Florida. And Florida's going nowhere. Like every three years Florida's firing a coach And that's not a way to win That's not a way to be stable That's not a way to find success And maybe places like Florida
Starting point is 00:09:35 Just destined to never have success again Because they're so hell bent on firing people Every couple of years And you don't want to get into that world And at least for LSU LSU's only had what Four head coaches in the last 25 years That's pretty good
Starting point is 00:09:49 And they've only I mean they fired two of them Less got fired But Les was there over a decade and O got fired he won a championship there and Kelly at some point is going to be fired but he costs too much to fire costs like 50 something million dollars to get Kelly out of there so this is where we are
Starting point is 00:10:10 my joy of college football my joy of sport my joy of Saturdays like I'm sitting there it's 11 a.m. on a Saturday or in this case I guess it was nude on a Saturday and I'm sitting there watching this and I found myself not giving a shit if LSU won or lost. Against
Starting point is 00:10:32 Vanderbilt. The only reason it bothered me that they lost is because it's losing to Vanderbilt. That part sucks because it's fucking Vanderbilt. But I'm sitting there and I'm like like, I didn't even care because I go into these games anticipating that LSU's
Starting point is 00:10:48 not going to win them. And Brian Kelly has done that. And he's not a very likable guy and I've seen things where people talking about whether or not he's a fit culturally at LSU, and I didn't buy that at first. But I do think there is something to be said about a guy that seemingly gets and understands the people that are his clients, the people that are his customers. Certain guys get that and certain people don't.
Starting point is 00:11:11 Look, Coach O got it. But Coach O was just naturally who he was. He was this Cajun Wacko, and it worked and it fit. And I think a lot of people, even when O got fired and even when O was losing games, there was kind of a commitment to O that people had because you, you felt like he was one of you and that he loved LSU as much as you did and that there was a passion. Ultimately, it had to end and it ended. But then what happened is you got the AD who comes in there, who for the most part makes great hires.
Starting point is 00:11:38 You know, he hired Kim Mulkey, but Kim Mulkey's a layup. Kim Mulkey is a Louisiana person who's one of the greatest college women's basketball coaches ever, who just so happens to be from Louisiana and wants to be at LSU, and it just worked out. And he hired the right college baseball coach. But just like this asshole did at A&M where he gave Jimbo this ridiculous buyout, and Jimbo was a dud. Jimbo failed at A&M and Brian Kelly is failing at LSU. Your boy, his name is Scott Woodward and he went big game hunting. He just wanted to get a sexy big name that he can spend $10 million a year on.
Starting point is 00:12:20 And he could have gotten the same results from Coach O. Could have gotten the same results from anybody at this point. Most people can roll out of bed and win eight or nine games at LSU. The talent's too good. But instead, what we've got here is a Jemoke that hired a guy that, again, it sucks to come to the realization that that's what this is. But LSU is never going to win anything of significance with Brian Kelly. And it sucks. On Saturday after LSU lost, I took my LSU flag down outside because I didn't want people to pity me.
Starting point is 00:12:55 I don't want people to drive by and see this LSU flag and go, oh, that poor asshole, because I know I would do the same fucking thing. I feel that same way when I drive by and see like a random, you know, whatever, Michigan State. You'll see a bunch of Michigan State flags. And I look at them and I go, all those poor sons of bitches. They root for Michigan State. I don't want to be the person on the receiving end of that. I don't want to be the person that people drive by and go, oh, that poor son of a bitch.
Starting point is 00:13:20 Oh, God, he roots for LSU. Brian Kelly's their head coach. Did you know? Oh, God. Did you see them? They lost to Vanderbilt. And they didn't just lose to Vanderbilt. Like, they were an underdog to Vanderbilt.
Starting point is 00:13:31 Yeah, LSU, a place where they've got, they spent $18 million on players in the transfer portal. Yeah, LSU. Their roster is $18 million. And they lost a Vanderbilt. And I don't want to be that loser. So I took the flag down. And you might say, well, Josh, that's not being loyal to your team. I'm not.
Starting point is 00:13:52 I'm not loyal to my team at all. I've tried. I'm someone like once you lose me, I'm uninterested. It's apathy. And I've been in places before where you can feel the apathy and you know that it's over. There's nothing Brian Kelly can do unless he wins a title. And even if he does, like you've never felt like Brian Kelly is LSU or wants to be at LSU. You've always kind of felt like Brian Kelly just thought he'd kind of gone as far as he was going to go at Notre Dame.
Starting point is 00:14:21 And LSU gave him the best opportunity to win a national championship, something he couldn't do at Notre Dame. And we all told ourselves that, hey, if Brian Kelly has the resources that LSU gives him, hell, I mean, look, he got to the national championship game and college football playoff at Notre Dame. Yeah, because Notre Dame's fucking gifted into it every year. Fucker? Oh, I hate this guy. And now this guy has zapped my passion for LSU. I have no interest in the games.
Starting point is 00:14:50 They play A&M this weekend at home. That could have been an epic game with a great atmosphere, but it's not. cares. A&M's probably going to come in there and fucking steamroll us because we're no, or somehow just to piss me off, LSU's going to win this. After the season's over, after losing the fucking Vanderbilt, LSU's going to somehow go out and beat A&M just to piss me off. So that was how my weekend went. So sad, but the thing is, like, I'm mad about it, but I'm not. You know, like, I think that's the part that makes me angrier is that LSU sucks, and LSU's going nowhere, and I hate Brian Kelly, but I don't care.
Starting point is 00:15:31 I think that's the part that really irks me as I'm sitting here today and I'm just like, I don't care. I am apathetic, and that's the worst part. Being apathetic about this stuff crushes me. I want to be angry watching the games when they lose, and I want to hang on every play. And I just don't. And a lot of that has to do with the fact that I just don't have any passion for the team and Brian Kelly. Same thing that happened to me with the Cardinals. You know, I moved to St. Louis wanting to go root for the Cardinals, but instead they had the worst two or three years they've ever had, and it killed my love not just for the Cardinals, but for baseball.
Starting point is 00:16:06 The St. Louis Cardinals, when I live there, were so bad that my love for baseball died. And that's kind of where I am with LSU right now. Anyway, more to come.
