Starting point is 00:00:00 Thanks to our friends at Gallery Furniture, it is the Josh Ennis show and well the day is complete now because Joey McIntyre is here, the great Joey McIntyre. How you doing sir? Thank you man, I'm good to be here. I'm glad I could make it before you shut down for the day. We thought you forgot about us and Jilly was upset because she's obsessed with you. No, I did. I felt the love and I was like I had to run do something else, but I I made it You know that the days of tea are gonna three for a loop here Okay, go one of my favorite lyrics the bluest of blue. That's what her eyes were very nice That's what I am today like everybody's like what the hell is he singing that's my came too late Wow
Starting point is 00:00:41 That's a TRL special. He was a rock. You're a rock star you know in that video I go into the kitchen and I you came too late. Wow. That's a TRL special. He was at the diner. You're a rock star. I do what I can. And in that video, I go into the kitchen, and I move a hot, big plate. But it's not hot. Someone told me, you moved a plate off of one stove to another, like a big pot, and didn't react to it. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:01:00 That's details, right? Yeah. That was actually Carson Daly who told you that. Exactly. What the hell are you doing? Exactly. Well, this is TRL. But was actually Carson Daly who told you that. Exactly. What the hell are you doing? Exactly. Well, this is TRL. But there was also Stay The Same.
Starting point is 00:01:09 Very good. That's a good song, man. You did some good stuff. You're good, man. I did like Jordan Knight's solo thing, too. Yeah, give it to you, for sure. What a good-looking guy. You guys are all good-looking guys.
Starting point is 00:01:17 He's fabulous. Did you know that Jonathan was gay, like when you guys were younger? I don't know if he knew he was gay. He might have. But do you think these things? No. I think when it's like when your buddies were younger? I don't know if he knew he was gay. He might have. But do you think these things? No. I think when it's like when your buddies or your friends,
Starting point is 00:01:29 I don't know, maybe it's just my experience, you don't really think about it. You realize if someone asks you, isn't it funny that he's not around girls or this, that, and the other thing? We didn't really think about it. We're brothers. You don't like whatever.
Starting point is 00:01:44 And obviously, he didn't really think about it when it's like you're almost we're brothers, you know, you don't like whatever and Obviously, you know, it wasn't he didn't just came out and come out it came out like 20 years ago So it wasn't a big story when you know, yeah That's just it's got to be tough for him because you got to put up the front, you know Kind of like it wasn't what it must have been for what's he did it? He didn't though wasn't like this big secret It really wasn't no one no one cause we didn't pay any attention to it. I think John had issues of just like, he wasn't like a natural performer. You know what I mean? And so he had some stage fright issues and he was just super shy.
Starting point is 00:02:14 That was the big thing with him. I mean, we had all had our issues, but that was it. It wasn't like he was, you know, jammed. It might've been, but it wasn't like this big lie that everybody was living. Starting point is 00:03:58 What I love about you guys too is because you had the major success and you know step by step and all that stuff. And then obviously things fall off for a while. So there's like an appreciation I think I get from you guys when I watch you. Back in 94, 95, after you do Dirty Dog, right? This guy has got his facts down. I watched the True Hollywood Story. Amazing.
Starting point is 00:04:18 No, but with that you go, OK, so. Can I say balls on air? He's got balls on air to do all these facts on a sports show I love it. I love it. I love the new kids. Okay, so after that happens What was the name of the album was it just dirty dog face the music face the music? Okay So that album happens aptly named then you know you guys are gone for a while gone So 15 years whenever you're gone for 15 years and you're trying the solo thing. Yeah It's doing this thing
Starting point is 00:04:41 Yeah Do you gain an appreciation for the fact that you once like, two girls were getting trampled at concerts in Japan for you guys, now it's different. I mean, we were super lucky and we had fun, but we were burnt out doing that. And when you go and go and go and at such a young age and you were dying to like get a break and we did. And yeah, it was tough being, you know,
Starting point is 00:05:00 trying to make it on your own and tough trying to, you know, going into a club when I'm 22. And by now all the fans are older, so they're kind of like giggling, like not in a good way, yeah, you know what I mean, anymore. So there was some growing pains for everybody, but that's what made the reunion in 2008. Our fans were ready, we were ready, we looked back at it and with warm thoughts and nostalgia and all that stuff. You would think I'm like a 14 year old girl talking to you, but I thought single should have been just a gigantic hit with Neo.
Starting point is 00:05:32 It did. That was a great song. You know what? We would not have sung that song without Neo because he wrote it and it was great working with him, but if Neo wasn't on it, it would have been a pop record, and it would have been a hit. But for the urban people, it was a little too much of a crossover. And not for nothing, I don't take it personally, but that's my little Monday morning quarterback thing.
Starting point is 00:05:57 I thought it was a great song. Me too. And then the Summer Time was a hit for you guys, that was your big comeback thing. I love, as I said, the energy. Jilly loves when you lift up your shirt in concert and your wing of the, your section of the show. You know what I'm saying? Like it had to have kicked ass to be in the new kids
Starting point is 00:06:12 on the block from like 88 to like 92. Or really even 86. Like you were like 12 when that started. We're playing the Toyota Center in May. So that's going to kick ass too. I mean, it's life is good. Sure. But I'm just saying like when you were younger, right?
Starting point is 00:06:25 Yeah, like how old were you? You know that you know that scene in colors when it's it when it's it's it's Sean Penn and Who's the other guy the? Colors the Jim who was in colors do you remember who was the older guy Sean Penn and famous famous actor? Who was in Colors? Do you remember? Who was the older guy? Sean Penn and who? Famous actor. How am I drawing a blank now? There's people driving yelling the name. Robert DeVaul? Robert DeVaul, right? So he tells that story and there's the two bulls up on the hill and they're looking down, I think it's bulls, and they're looking down on a valley and there's a herd of cows and one says to the other
Starting point is 00:07:08 Hey, let's run down there and Blank one of those cows. Yeah, and Robert Deval says no, let's walk down and blank them all Okay, so that's my no no. No's how it is now back then you were running around Bing bang boom now. We're walking down and Enjoying the whole thing you get to kind of step back. Yeah, I mean I'm not I'm not blanking anybody because I'm happily married I'm not saying that Yeah, but figuratively
Starting point is 00:07:43 Speaking with like in your hump. I have like figuratively speaking... Like, and you humped the stage? I have like a four and a half pack right now, dude. I'm not in tip-top shape. But you humped the stage still, right? I love to hump a stage, absolutely. You watch the new edition movie yet? Not yet. You lived it probably. Did you hang out with New Edition?
Starting point is 00:08:00 I met them. We looked up to them, yeah. So where is Roxbury in relation to where you guys grew up? My parents were born in Roxbury and Mission Hill, right? Just you could spit to the projects where they grew up It's like that's amazing Marie star he did he discover. Yeah. Yeah, so how did that process work? How do they find Joey and should I cancel my flight because I listen you gotta go you gotta go This is a great interview. I'm just I'm just saying i'm serious flight winter flight uh...
Starting point is 00:08:26 it's eight i'll be fine no bags check with what was your hobby bush your good it's just like i'm straight irish tree what is it he'd love to give you a look at some mcdonald's on the way right and and and and and and and and and and and and and and and and and and and and uh... believe me i'm flattered what was the question it was about to get that ever fight Bobby Brown? No, we never fought Bobby Brown.
Starting point is 00:08:47 Maurice Starr, how did you get discovered? Well he actually met Donnie and Donnie actually put the group together and it was very, it was not a ceremonial big audition thing, cattle call thing at all. Eight people total audition for our group and it was very unceremonious and Donnie realized he's got to put a group together or this is gonna die. So Jordan and John were in the choir in his school, went and got them. Danny and he breakdanced and performed at you know parties and stuff like that. Well Donnie was a little hood right? I mean he and his brother Mark were a little kind of... They were tough. They were like, what, there's just six Wahlberg brothers.
Starting point is 00:09:25 So they're tough, tough guys. I know. I've seen the burger show. Yeah, exactly. They're like, get out of a clown car. Just Wahlberg after Wahlberg after Wahlberg. Yep. That's great.
Starting point is 00:09:32 I just, I think it's cool the way. We're very blessed. Yeah. Totally, man. And you lived this great life. And now you're back. And you guys fill up. You're playing Fenway, right?
Starting point is 00:09:40 Yeah, we've sold out Fenway. Is that a dream? Have you done that before? We did it once before with the Backstreet Boys, and I cried three times during the night. So, yeah, it's got to be huge. Yeah, it's phenomenal. Yeah. So you guys ever like tag team chicks together or anything? Like high five it like back in like not anymore.
Starting point is 00:09:56 Like in 90, like you're playing in Japan. The tag team version is us hugging a girl, both of us at the same time. That's the 2017 version. How about that you're in Fuller House? Yeah, thatny for that? Donny wasn't there. What was the deal? Well, he was on Blue Bloods. Yeah. What do you think about him and Ginny McCarthy? She seems like a peach. She is. She's a sweetheart. She's like a sister already. Yeah, that's great. So tour. Is it a world tour here this year? North America, about 50 dates for now, but there's a window, especially for Donny
Starting point is 00:10:24 on Blue Bloods, so maybe in 2018 we'll take it around the world. What's your favorite new kids song? I like I like Favorite Girl. Nice I'm a big fan of that one. Please don't go girl. You crush that. You crush it. Thank you I still crush it. You do and then you hump the stage. Well not in that song. No which song do you hump the stage? Well I did a mashup of Sweet Dreams and and a song called Twisted. You were definitely, you were humping that stage. You loaned it.
Starting point is 00:10:50 You crushed it. Yeah, you got it, man. Valentine, girl, right? Yeah. I love all that stuff. Very nice. The right stuff and hanging tough. For sure.
Starting point is 00:10:59 You guys still do single in the set or no? A little bit. We tried it the last tour and then kind of kicked it to the side. I like the block party. I wrote the block party. I was at Mandalay Bay for the opener of that. I just happened to be in Vegas. I don't stalk you guys. I'm not that weird. But I happened to be in Vegas. I was for the radio station. They said it was New Kids and Nelly who kicks ass. In TLC. I said. Bam. So I went to Mandalay Bay and there's Joey McIntyre humping the stage.
Starting point is 00:11:26 There you go. When are we going to get a new kids movie? Like where you guys like show the tag teams? I don't know, man. We have it good. Part of me doesn't want to go there, you know what I mean? Because things are so good and then you start trying to fit it into a two hour long thing.
Starting point is 00:11:42 And it's like, dude, that wasn't you or that was me. New kid, this new addition was six hours. It like dude that wasn't you or that was me. New addition was six hours. That's crazy. I know that was wild. I would have thought they had that much of a history. But they did. Yeah they did. But I can't wait to see the film.
Starting point is 00:11:55 Like you guys tag team and you guys do whatever you do. You ever do blow with Bobby Brown? No not Bobby Brown no. Oh Ralph Treddon. Anyway good talking with you, man. You're the best. Appreciate it. Great to be here.
Starting point is 00:12:07 Thanks for having me. Thanks for the love. I'll see you May 20th at the Toyota Center. Can we come backstage and meet the whole crew? Sure. I'll get your number. Let's do it. I want to hang.
Starting point is 00:12:16 Well, yeah. We'll do that thing. I want to hang with you and Donnie, because Donnie seems like a bad ass, and Jordan just a handsome guy. Donnie's a great sports guy. I like the storylines lines but he could tell you you know who's playing and the defensive moves and the game plans he gets very specific. Why wasn't Mark in the new kids?
Starting point is 00:12:32 He wanted to you know mess around. Do you think he was good in fear? I liked fear. Did you see fear? Fear? Yeah Mark Wahlbergberg. Fear. Oh, oh, oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. He hooks up with her on the Ferris wheel. Yeah, he's had some good performances over the years. What's his best movie? Oh, I mean, the thingy, Dirk Diggler. That's a film. Yeah. I like Boogie Nights.
Starting point is 00:12:57 Boogie Nights, yeah. That's Head and Shoulders above the rest. So we'll see you on May 20th. Yes. And we are going to hang out backstage. Done. Me, you, Ginny McCarthy. Done. Everybody, it's going to be a hell of a time. Done. And we are going to hang out backstage, meet you, Ginny McCarthy. Done. Everybody's going to be a hell of a time.
Starting point is 00:13:06 Done. And then whenever you guys do Favorite Girl, I'll get up there and just do it with you. And it'll be great. Yeah, yeah. Thank you, Joey. Now you got to run, man. All right, man.
Starting point is 00:13:13 Thank you, dude. Thanks, buddy. That's a great Joey McIntyre. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. We're back after this.
