Starting point is 00:00:00 So, Pat Kerwin from the NFL on Sirius talked about the future of Mario Williams and what the Texans can actually do to keep him around. And he started by saying that they couldn't cap him and he told everybody the details we already knew that it would cost about $22 million allegedly to franchise him. So it wasn't going to happen. But he did on his radio show on XM Sirius say what the Texans could do to keep Mario Williams here. Could they really put a deal together in the next few days that works for them and it works
Starting point is 00:00:36 for the football team? And my answer today is yes. And I went back and I'll tell you where I went and if it was my deal and how I had to do it I could get this done. They have 4.77 million dollars of cap space that's not enough to do the deal. Matt Schaub's in the last year at his deal so you can't go to the bank of Schaub but I went to the bank of four guys. Four guys that if I went to my owner and said look I got four guys here that I'd like to approach we're not gonna ask them to extend the length of their contract that's a full negotiation they're not gonna listen to them to extend the length of their contract. That's a full negotiation. They're not going to listen to that.
Starting point is 00:01:06 But I could convert their salaries to signing bonus reasonable amounts. And when I do, and Andre Johnson, Jonathan Joseph Owen, Daniels, Antonio Smith, and Antonio Smith a little older than the others, but only two years on his deal, it was quick, easy for me to convert their salaries, a significant piece of it into signing bonus Which really is just extending a salary early no extra years So the players will want to do it and if you do it the way I said you can read the piece when it comes Out you could create 16 really
Starting point is 00:01:39 maneuvers to 12 million of cap space you add the 477 you got you're up to almost 17 million in cap space, you add the 477 you got, you're up to almost 17 million of cap space. First stop Mario Williams, you've all got that center in the running back to do, and my contention is you could, without cutting a single player, keep Mario on a deal that's real. Forget all this phony money discount crap. The deal I put together, six years, Timmy, $90 million dollars 30 million dollars signing bonus I ran out of some salaries for the first couple of years. You could keep Mario You wouldn't cut a player you wouldn't get a player that had to give you extra time. They could keep Mario
Starting point is 00:02:16 They could sign Myers. They could keep arian foster and make that Super Bowl run They're prepared to make that run. They let these guys go for any reason. They can't do it. Wait, now hold on a second. So that was a lot of numbers in there. And basically, the overall gist is they can make the deal happen. You can make any deal happen if you've got the right people
Starting point is 00:02:37 to play along with you. I thought one of the biggest points was they can give Mario Williams a $90 million deal and only have it count $6 million against the cap this season. I think it's embarrassing that Mario Williams could make $90 million deal and only have it count $6 million against the cap this season? I think it's embarrassing that Mario Williams could make $90 million. Well, I think it's embarrassing. That's a conversation for another day.
Starting point is 00:02:52 That's a bigger picture conversation about the state of pro sports. Well, not just that. I don't care. I understand that people make big money. That doesn't bother me. But Mario Williams is not worth $90 million. Well, under the proposal that Kerwin puts together, it would be a $90 million deal. But obviously when you say $90 million in the NFL these days, that doesn't mean he's
Starting point is 00:03:10 going to take home $90 million when all is said and done. As always, it's all about the signing bonus. Sure. And under Kerwin's scenario, it's a $30 million signing bonus and a $1,000,000 salary in the first year that would count $6,000,000 against the cap and a $3,000,000 salary in the second year, which would mean Mario would make $34,000,000 in a two-year period, which is right in the ballpark of what he's doing right now. Yeah, and if they truly want to have him back, they can make it work.
Starting point is 00:03:40 Now, are there other teams that can offer a ton of money and a lot more upfront stuff? Probably. And that's what they're dealing with. But the point he made at the very end when he said, if they don't get these deals done, they're not making a run for the Super Bowl. So you mean to tell me if Mario Williams isn't on this team that they can't go to the Super Bowl? That's a little over the top. But I will tell you that in my opinion, if Mario Williams leaves, you've got a lesser chance of getting there. There's no question about it.
Starting point is 00:04:07 I disagree with that because I feel that if you would have had a healthy quarterback this year, you were better than the Ravens. You're not going to throw three picks with Matt Schaub and six other balls that could have been picked against the Ravens. As much respect as I have for both what Connor Barwin and Brooks Reed did last year and what I think they're capable of doing moving forward, they're not as good as Mario Williams. Well then tell me, I agree. Well I agree even though you...
Starting point is 00:04:29 They don't impact the play every down like Mario Williams does. But I don't agree that he impacts every play. I don't. See, we always talk about the... I think before they got Barwin and Reed and Wade Phillips turned this team into a 3-4, what we saw for almost five years was Mario Williams being double teamed on literally every single defensive snap and Mario Williams still putting up multiple double-digit sack seasons and pro ball appearances. Like I said, five sacks in
Starting point is 00:04:56 four and a quarter games I think gave us a brief peek into what there might be for Mario Williams in this defense over the course of a 16 game season. Again, for five years, the guy had to be basically a one-man pass rush. That's certainly no longer the case. This would be the worst possible time in his career to lose Mario Williams. But I don't think it impedes their possibility of winning a Super Bowl. I think they are still a leading contender to win the Super Bowl.
Starting point is 00:05:25 I think he takes them from a top five defense to a defense we could be talking about as an historically great defense. Yeah, but think about this. I mean that can often be the difference between whether or not you're a good team that goes to the playoffs, wins a game or two, but doesn't win the Super Bowl and a team that goes all the way. Just look this year. That wasn't a historically great defense. No, no, but I'm not talking about the Texans. Just look what happened this year. I'm talking about the Giants. Right. The New York Giants had an almost embarrassment of riches in the pass rushing department. That's all I'm talking about is pass rushers. Having a wave of pass rushers that you can send against opposing quarterbacks. No matter what Eli Manning did on defense, to me that's still the biggest reason they won it all and it would be the biggest reason I would like the Texans to win it all if they bring Mario Williams
Starting point is 00:06:13 back. Okay, to your point, A, I don't think the Giants were an elite defense, I mean they were not an all-time great defense. I didn't say they were. I know, but your case is the Texans could have an all-time great defense if Mario comes back. Could, could. I'm not saying will, but I'm saying could. I know, that's what you the Texans could have an all-time great defense if Mario comes back. Could. I'm not saying will, but I'm saying could.
Starting point is 00:06:26 I know, that's what you said. You said they could. But the Giants proved that you don't need the 85 Bears to win a Super Bowl. And they were still getting to the quarterback without Mario Williams. Without Mario Williams, they had what, five and a half sacks against the Ravens? Right, and my point would be think of how much better they could be with him. Yeah, but you could also find somebody else that's not costing you as much. Well, you saw what you were able to do in the draft last year.
Starting point is 00:06:48 You were able to find a guy like Brooks Reed who played really well as a reserve and now he's a second year guy and Connor Barwin had 11 and a half sacks. Think about that. JJ Watt who could turn out to be an all time great. I agree with that. Here's the point. You look at the 11 and a half sacks that you got out of Connor Barwin, a guy that had nice sack totals in college, I think he only had four and a half sacks in his
Starting point is 00:07:09 first year in the league or three sacks, something like that, then was injured for most of 2010, and then last year was a beast. That defense, I mean, you talked about it with Mario, you talked about his numbers in that defense and what he was able to do in that defense. That defense in the 3-4 can lead the guys getting to the quarterback. Without Mario Williams for the last 10 games then plus two playoff games, they got to the quarterback. Well on the question you asked, and certainly I know what your answer is because you don't mind the Texans losing him now, so if you're another team, I'm sure your answer is that you're not going to give Mario Williams the 90 million dollar deal that Kerwin describes. I actually in the day or two since that question was posed have kind of come around to the other side and said, and my opinion now is that
Starting point is 00:07:56 if I'm the Texans and Mario Williams is out there as a free agent and I have a chance to do all the things that Kerwin described and put a 90 million dollar offer on the table to Mario Williams. You bet I'm doing. I can't even fathom that. 713-572-4610 if you'd like to join us. We want to know what you think. I can't fathom doing that though. I truly can't. Alright, let's go to William on the south side on sports radio 610. Go ahead William.
Starting point is 00:08:19 Hi guys. I'm buying into what you're saying, Rich. I can understand what you're saying, Josh, as far as letting him go, but my thing is, now he's an unrestricted free agent, right? So couldn't we sign him and then trade him or do a sign and trade deal? You know, because I can't see us letting him walk and not getting anything for him. Well, if he walks, they're going to get compensation get compensation right if an unrestricted free agent leaves do you get what's the compensation from unrestricted free agent? Now it's just a first-round pick. It's a first-round pick so I mean there would be some compensation. Used to be first and a third. Yeah. All right 7-1-3 5-7-2 4-6-7 no he left. You hung up on him. No I didn't hang up on him he
Starting point is 00:09:01 dropped. Please. I did not hang up on him. Dude you think I'm blind? No he dropped before I hung up on him. I just don't understand why we go to a break saying, let's talk about this, let us know what you think, and then when I go to a call, you throw your pen up in the air. I was in the middle of making a point. What's your problem? I don't have a problem. But you're cutting me off. I mean, I don't get it. We might as well not give the phone number. Why? Because you don't want to take calls. You say you do, but you don't. Admit it. Alright. Alright. You know what? I'll tell you the truth. Please, we'll talk. That's what I want to hear. I don't want to take calls. You say you do, but you don't. Admit it. Alright. You know what? I'll tell you the truth. Please, we'll talk. That's what I want to hear. I don't mind taking calls, but we're paid to give our opinion on the show.
Starting point is 00:09:31 Exactly. They're not paid to call up and say, hey, I think Mario Williams should stay. If that's the case, then why am I here? Well, then why do we have a phone board here if we don't take calls? Why are you paying me to do a show if my opinion doesn't matter? Because Josh, there's such a thing as finding a balance between hosts guests and callers and Ben from time to time Ben weighs in I mean, what's wrong with I don't hear from as many voice. Oh, please. You don't mind you throw your pen up in there I'm in the middle of making a point like oh
Starting point is 00:10:02 Dude why don't you be real like you always ask everybody else to be, and say you don't like taking calls? I don't like a show that's dominated by calls? No. We're not to unwell. I acknowledge that. Listen. But just because a guy's sitting there and I'm in the middle of a point,
Starting point is 00:10:14 why are you cutting off the guy who is your partner on the show? Dominated? I don't want. Dominated? Dude, there are hours where we might take one, maybe two calls. OK. Dominated? The calls are an exception, dude, not the rules.
Starting point is 00:10:27 Okay, that's the point, okay, the point I'm making is... And I'm fine with that. I am too! No you're not. That's the...what? No you're not dude, come on, why don't you be real? Go find some other person to do the damn show with you then. You don't care, you don't care about my opinion on anything.
Starting point is 00:10:41 Oh clearly. You don't, because you're cutting me off in the middle of a freaking point to go to the phones. What I care about is sharing the conversation with as many of our listeners as possible. I've always considered that a pretty high priority. Let's cut, okay, we're the ones being paid to do the show. It's not called caller in R. It doesn't matter. That's not the name of the show. So your point is the callers don't matter because they're not on the payroll. I didn't say they don't matter. That is what you're saying. What you're doing is doing what you always do and spinning it into me being a villain here, as always. Hey, whatever. That's what you do. Yeah, that's my job. That's your job. Your job is to make
Starting point is 00:11:11 me look like the scummiest person. I do enough of that on my own. How am I doing? I do enough of that on my own. You're doing a pretty good job. Okay. See, because you've set me off now. And now what's going to happen is jackasses like that guy Buck are going to call and be like, hey man, I invented Alka-Seltzer and I hate Josh and get Gavin on phone Well, you know like most people who listen to this show. I enjoy hearing from someone other than you from time to time Yes, I'll admit it. I have no problem taking calls I don't want a hundred of them, but you don't cut off the co-host in the middle of a segment and say let's get to the call Do you think people tune in to say, boy, I can't wait to hear what Jim in Spring has to say today?
Starting point is 00:11:49 Actually, I did grow up listening to sports talk radio, and one of the reasons I listened was because I wanted to hear what the callers had to say. So here's what we're going to... Absolutely. That's super. 713-572-4610. And I don't think I'm alone on that. 610-26. One of the best things about talk radio is callers.
Starting point is 00:12:03 That's super. Then if that's the case, then find someone that doesn't have an opinion to host the show and then just say hey caller eight you're on, you're on, you're on, you're on, you're on, you're on. Yeah that's what we do. That's what you should do. I'm amazed that you just keep cutting me off to say well we gotta get this guy's point in. I'm cutting him off? I'm uncomfortable. Are you kidding me? Cutting you off? I have high blood pressure and I have high cholesterol. I need to stop yelling or I'm gonna have an aneurysm. Yeah, we should roll a clock on the show someday between 2 and 6 and see how frequently you cut me off. What percentage of the conversation you occupy?
Starting point is 00:12:39 Okay, okay, because I'm willing, because I'm not the one that's in there, man, we gotta get to these phone calls. No, you're not the one that goes on and on, you're right. Whatever. 713-572-4610-61026 if you want to get involved via text. Laura, how are you doing today? I'm fine, thank you. I don't think so, but... What is that? A jacket? I was just saying, I don't know if it was like zebra or leopard, it's not leopard, clearly. Is that...oh, there's flowers? No, I don't think there's flowers.
Starting point is 00:13:04 Is that the sun? No. I don't know what the was like zebra or leopard. It's not leopard, clearly. Is that, oh, there's flowers? No, I don't think there's flowers. Is that the sun? No. I don't know what the hell that is. Black and white. So are you gonna be okay? I'm fine. Is there an aneurysm coming? I hope not.
Starting point is 00:13:11 I hope we don't end up in the hospital today. It's Callers in R featuring Ben. I don't think it's safe in here. I'm leaving. If you want in, you know the phone number. I'm sure we'll hear about how much of a scumbag I am today. That's pretty catchy, actually. Callers in R, go for it.
Starting point is 00:13:23 I don't care. I don't want my name. Let's put it to music. You know what? From now on, I don't want my name on this show. From here on out, change all the liners. I don't want my name on this show. It's Callers and R featuring Wacky Josh. Imagine that. The world hates me and I suck. Haven't heard that before. Oh, I know. Haven't heard that because you're cutting me off before I can finish. Going to the phones. It's J and R. Stick around.
