Now, Mike Leach, of course, is the coach at Washington State and they're a top 10 team in the college football playoff. They're actually number eight. And Jim texted him the other day,
Starting point is 00:02:02 trying to get him on the air and he said, "'Sure, I just can't do it live because I'm not up that early. Right. The pirate sleeps. And then we said, wouldn't it be funny if he had a conversation with Les Miles having no idea that they actually had a conversation together on Les's podcast? Imagine our surprise. So we have an excerpt from this, about seven minutes, so we'll interrupt where we see fit. But this is the pirate talking with the Mad Hatter. Go ahead. Playoff hockey, overtime playoff hockey. This is Les Miles. This is Mike Leech on VI. Hey, how are you doing?
Starting point is 00:03:33 I'm doing great, Mike. How are you? I'm doing good. Where are you living nowadays? Baton Rouge, Louisiana. So you're still there? Yes, you betcha. The family is very much at home
Starting point is 00:03:48 and it's hard for us to move, I can tell you that. Yeah, pause it. These are two old men talking on like rotary dial phones. Like if you think you're hosting your podcast, you would think they'd put you in a studio and you'd have Mike Leach on the phone. Oh yeah. No, it's like two dudes on cell phones in their car.
Starting point is 00:04:07 Or let's do Skype. They're like, hey, bud, what you up to? Where are you living now? Can you hear me OK? What about now? Like grumpy old men? It is. Continue.
Starting point is 00:04:19 Yeah, well, I've always liked it. I actually have a friend that goes out there from time to time. He's a movie director. And they've got all those sound stages and it's kind of like nobody really knows about them. But Baton Rouge is, between Baton Rouge and New Orleans, they're full of all these sound stages off in those lots and they shoot a ton of movies out there.
Starting point is 00:04:40 You're exactly right. You're exactly right. Right at the end of this, probably three miles away from us, is the Celtic Studios. And it's a huge studio and a lot of really big time productions have come out of there. But it seems like it has a little ebb and flow and sometimes they're hot to shoot movies and then sometimes it's cold sometimes. So.
Starting point is 00:05:12 I think, like it feels like this needs the old person music underneath. It's just two old people. It is. Like they meet for breakfast in the morning, every morning, same place, same time. It's the same thing. And the same thing every day.
Starting point is 00:05:25 Sometimes it's warm, sometimes it's cold. You know with the movies, sometimes they're hot and sometimes they're cold. So, and I love at the beginning, yeah, you betcha. Like all of a sudden he's morphed into someone from Wisconsin, all the way from Michigan, I guess. All right, continue. Hey, listen, Mike, if you don't mind,
Starting point is 00:05:42 I just wanted to say, and thanks, thanks for being a part of the Less Is More podcast. And I've always enjoyed you. You're very difficult to play, but always seem to have a great perspective about sport. In fact, I was sitting here as I was thinking some of the things that I wish I'd do. I'd like to come out there and study a little football with you
Starting point is 00:06:07 No, you pause it you're a liar all less miles does is sits there and runs the power I and two tight ends this guy's got five wide receivers You mean to tell did you should have studied him 15 years ago? You'd still be the coach at LSU Well, you're never too old to learn new tricks. Yeah, he's like, I want to use those when I get my new job at Kansas. Yeah. All right, continue. You gotta see what you do. And if I get some free time, the bad news with not having a football job
Starting point is 00:06:36 is I have a lot of things that my wife is going to insist that I do, and it's just miserable. Yeah, well, you need to just come out to Pullman, just run, run like the wind. I mean, uh, just leave, leave her a note and just bolt out the door. That's the best shot I got. Hey, I got one last question for you, Mike, because this is one that you would enjoy, I would think. If you, would you rather be the president of the United States or win a national championship in football? Oh, that's a tough question there.
Starting point is 00:07:21 tough question there. That really is kind of a tough question because, and they're, you know, we're, they're weirdly similar jobs from the standpoint, virtually everybody thinks they can do your job better than you can do it, you know, I mean, whether you're a president or a football coach, I mean, there's, there's literally children, uh, sitting around that think they know more about your job than you do. And same way with the president. So they're similar from that standpoint. You're that, you know, as good as you do, you're going to be half right.
Starting point is 00:07:59 But I don't know, you know, that Air Force one's kind of got an appeal to it. I don't know, that Air Force One's kind of got an appeal to it. You know, but- It could be flying around the country, what you're saying, in a big-time plane is kind of fun. Well, that sounds good. You've got the international thing. Of course, their press corps seems even more annoying than some of them you run into in college football.
Starting point is 00:08:27 You know, you'd have a lot of interesting friends in the end. Championship trophy sure would look good. I agree with you. I think that there's it's interesting. They're having it's a ridiculous hypothetical. Would you rather be the president or would you rather win the national championship? And like, they're not, I think sometimes Leach does it to be ironic.
Starting point is 00:08:54 Les is like, oh no, I agree with you. Let me get it, and like, he's like getting in depth in this. It's fantastic. Continue. College football coaches really want to do a lot. They want to, you know, have an effect on the young men that they coach. The is something that ties everybody together. But the want and the ability to affect people as the President of the United States, I don't know. If somebody presented me with that particular offer, I'd need to know how often I could get the Air Force One to go do the things I wanted to do.
Starting point is 00:09:51 Well, yeah, that's right. Well, then of course you'd want to get to the bottom of Area 51. You'd want to know everything about that and see what exactly they do know about UFOs and what they don't. You'd want to, you know, there'd definitely be some national secrets you'd want to know. And, you know, you could get to the bottom of some stuff there, you know, and then... I think strategy played on international politics by a football coach would work. I don't think there's any question. People trying to find practical solutions to practical problems and football coaches
Starting point is 00:10:41 do that too. Whether you like it or not, you, you know, there's problems that are going to walk through the door every day and you've got to fix them. I can't fix them. Um, nobody's going to. So I think that part's beneficial. Now this president job, that is a suit and tie job. And I gotta be honest, that's the part that appealed to me at all.
Starting point is 00:11:05 Yeah. You want shorts, you want a t-shirt, a whistle and hey, you can come to work any way you want to. You're the president. Yeah, well, that's there'd be some other presidents rolling over in their graves, but it'd be fun while it lasted. graves but it'd be fun while it lasted. Hey Mike, if you don't mind I will in the right time come up and visit. I enjoy a route for you and want you to have success. Yeah, no that'd be outstanding come anytime. Okay, great. Hey Mike, thanks for being a part.
Starting point is 00:11:46 This has been a real joy. I know that the people that tune in on our podcast will enjoy getting the philosophy in the field, Mike Leach. Yeah. Shoot. Um, my pleasure. Be happy to be on any time. Tell them to buy my books.
Starting point is 00:12:02 Tell them to buy my, uh, the swing, the swing your sword book, uh, which that made the New York Times best seller. And then the book on Geronimo is a good one too. That's awesome. There's those two great books and really should be must reading. I got to get those myself. Enjoy your shopping. I know what you're getting for Christmas
Starting point is 00:12:30 He goes well those are certainly great books they're must-read Like the old party line. Oh God, oh. Does that make you, you've gotta set up this recorded interview with Mike. That is all he'll wanna do it. I don't know what will. That was fantastic. Oh God, but it's fantastic with Les,
Starting point is 00:12:59 cause he's like, you're right, that's fantastic reading, and I haven't read it myself, but it's a must read for anyone who has never read it. Okay, Mike Leach has written a book about Geronimo. Aside from Pirates, I'm reading this Wikipedia, aside from Pirates, he's researched topics such as Native American leader Geronimo, American pioneer Daniel Boone, grizzly bears,
Starting point is 00:13:26 chimpanzees, whales, and American artist Jackson Pollock. I love this guy. I do too. I mean, listen, we've known that the guy's fun for awhile, but it's just like every week because they're good. Every week there's something new. And we can have 12 days of leechmas once you record this. That's gonna be our goal, the 12 days of leechmas once you record this. That's gonna be our goal,
Starting point is 00:13:45 the 12 days of leechmas. Yep. I can't read this text, I'm sorry. Okay. But it is funny. Do it in the break. I'll read it to you personally during their break. Thank you. Alright, Josh Ennis Show. We'll take some of your phone calls and get wackier. Stay there. This is The Josh Ennis Show. Josh Ennis.
