The Josh Innes Show - JIS Classic: Yuletide Drive at Sports Radio 610
Episode Date: December 1, 2022Hello All! It appears people have enjoyed hearing some classic moments from my career. As long as I keep finding them, I'll keep posting. This was December 7, 2012. That would have been nearly a decad...e ago. I asked Gavin if we could do some sort of Holiday event to raise money for a good cause. We ended up raising money for a Women's Center. The next year we raised cash for a Miracle League field. This is the final segment of our event. I miss these days. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

All right, so where we stand right now is we need a little bit more to make this happen.
It's for the Fort Bend County Women's Center, and Evita Goodell joins us now,
and you are the executive director of the center, correct?
Yes.
So for those who don't know, and we've kind of described a lot of the stuff you do,
but what all do you guys do at the Fort Bend County Women's Center?
Well, we basically do anything to help victims of domestic violence and sexual assault and their kids to become safe and self-sufficient. Well, tell the listeners
about the $75,000 grant that you guys almost got. Yeah. Well, every year, of course, our budget is
very, very tight. And when we were budgeting for this year, for 2012, we had a grant that we were
applying for for $75,000,
and we just had to get it in order to make the budget balance.
And we didn't get it.
And we were very disappointed and have been working to try and make up that difference.
But, man, today we have made up two-thirds of that.
Y'all are just awesome.
That's incredible. Well, let me ask you this, though.
When you talk about your budget, like how tight is it for you guys over there when you're talking about diapers and having
to shelter some of these women? How tight is your budget? Well, we're basically on a zero-based
budget every year. We spend what we bring in to be able to buy those things that the ladies need
and pay the light bill and the salaries of the people who help them and keep our shelter going.
We have a shelter that holds 65 people, so it's a big operation.
And without the donations from the public for the diapers and food and things like that,
we just couldn't do it.
How long have you all been at it,
and how many women and their children would you estimate you've assisted?
We've been in existence since 1980,
and we think we weren't keeping good count to start with,
but we've done over 35,000 women and children come through the shelter, and they've all been able to give
the chance to go on and live a life that is outside of abuse.
And if someone listening, because I know we've touched a lot of people this week with your
message, if someone wants to help beyond, you know, maybe they don't have the means
to donate something that could turn into revenue for the center, but maybe want to just donate their time.
Can they do that?
Oh, absolutely.
Absolutely.
They can go to our website, which is fortbendwomenscenter.org,
and we've got a whole page on how to volunteer.
And Amber Paso, who is here with me tonight, is our volunteer coordinator,
and she's just ready to talk to them and find a job.
All right.
So when we started the Yuletide Drive, Maggie, in promotions,
she runs the whole thing and made this thing go.
She said that her best estimation was, she told you guys, like $5,000.
She did, yeah. We came into today hoping to get to $40,000.
Thanks to JBL Energy and Miller Lite, we are at $53,500.
Oh, my gosh.
I hope I didn't just break your microphone.
That's okay.
That is okay.
That is fantastic.
I will.
Manny at Miller Lite just texted me and said,
listen, we want to help you guys out to get to $50,000.
Same for JBL Energy.
We are at $53,500 for the folks here with the Fort Bend County Women's Center.
It's amazing when you go in looking for $5,000, and Houston comes through with about $55,000.
Absolutely.
I'm a native Houstonian, and I know how wonderful Houston is, but this is just confirming that tenfold.
Y'all are wonderful.
Thank you so much.
Oh, it's really awesome.
And Amber, if you want to get in here for a second, we can talk to you as well.
I've seen you out here a couple of the days that we've been doing this.
And just $55,000 from the city of Houston, how does that make you guys feel?
Speechless.
Absolutely speechless.
I mean, we all, I think, have goosebumps.
And this has just been unreal for us. And I just calculated with that amount of money, we can house almost 800 women, 791.
That's unreal.
That's great.
You know, we're getting a lot out of this also.
We really are.
I mean, I've been doing this show for 17 years, and this might be the best week we've ever had.
I mean, it's just such a good feeling to know that we can reach so many people,
because we can't do this ourselves.
We need our listeners to do this, and they've pumped us up all week.
So it's been great.
You've got a new fan of sports radio right here.
I've got to tell you that.
A shout-out to your amazing, amazing listeners for everything that they've done this week.
Houston, you are awesome.

Well, the number is $53,500.
Incredible.
Thank you, Houston.
You guys are incredible.
Amber, thank you so much.
We'll all hug it out here in a second.
It's been such a great week.
And if you want to see what the card looks like that they sent over for us.
It's on the show page.
At the J&R show page, sportsradio610.com.
But we know that people like Alicia, people like Amy, people like Cassandra, people like Ann,
all the people that signed this card for us
are going to benefit greatly from what happened here over the course of this week.
Just an incredible outpouring of support and love from the city of Houston.
And one of the reasons we've been able to make this happen this week is our partners
all week long who've allowed us to bring the show out into the community and take the show
on live remote locations like the folks here at Wingstop in Missouri City in the Lake Olympia area.
Also want to thank, from Monday's show, Mojo's Sports Bar and Grill in Atascosita.
On Tuesday, we were at Hooters and Stafford on the Southwest Freeway.
Wednesday, it was Baker Street Pub at Sugar Land Town Center.
And just yesterday, Topgolf, fantastic new facility on the Katy Freeway outbound just west of Highway 6.
So our thanks to all five of those businesses for hosting the show today.
Couldn't have done it without them as well.
Couldn't have done it without Miller Lite, who made the whole thing possible.
And as I said, Manny, just a second ago, texted me and said, Josh, we want to get you to 50,000.
So Miller Lite kicked in three there at the end.
And same can be said for JBL Energy Partners. and said, Josh, we want to get you to $50,000. So Miller Lite kicked in three there at the end.
And same can be said for JBL Energy Partners.
They gave us $3,500 down the stretch.
Charles Millsap gave us $200.
Blaine, 12-year-old kid, called, donated $50.
That's very cool.
It's awesome.
Georgios, we have to thank them because Georgios has donated about $10,000 over the course of the last two days.
It's been an incredible run, and I don't know what else to say about it.
It's unreal.
And, again, if you want to get on the website and find out all about how you can help,
it was mentioned a few moments ago that if you just have time to give, you can do that.
But they will basically take almost any item of value that can be turned around and sold and turned into
revenue for the center.
So we encourage you to help them out.
They're going to go get Rich's Furniture.
They'll be over for a couch, a mattress and box spring, and the fat clothes tomorrow.
Yes, they will.
They'll swaddle those children in your fat clothes.
One more time, guys.
$53,500.
Unbelievable.
For the J&R Yuletide Drive, Houston, I love you.
You guys are incredible.
You came through Miller Lite, JBL Partners.
You guys were really incredible for us down the stretch here.
Hey, Jim Mudd, Maggie Wessel, Gavin Spittel, a lot of behind-the-scenes help to make this happen as well.
And I know I didn't name everybody, but they were instrumental also.
Absolutely. $53,500 raised by the J&R Yuletide Drive. We love you, Houston. This is why you're
the best city in the country. It's J&R. We're going to see you Monday.
