At Capital One, we're more than just a credit card company.
We're people just like you who believe in the power of yes.
Yes to new opportunities.
Yes to second chances.
Yes to a fresh start.
That's why we've helped over 4 million Canadians get access to a credit card.
Because at Capital One, we say yes, so you don't have to hear another no.
What will you do with your yes?
Get the yes you've been waiting for at Capital One.ca.ca.
slash yes terms and conditions apply all right part three this was not intended to be a three
parter here but here is part three so I said that I have the blueprint and I don't know that
it'll win but it's the only chance you have to win unless you get the Phillies or the Eagles right
so I think he got some talented guys I don't know about this bill guy so I look I don't want
I know I'm not saying this to be a dickhead or dismissive I mean this completely sincerely I've
never heard the guy. So I don't know if he's any good or not. Fine. I know who John is. I know
him as a person. I know him as a radio guy. I think he's a talented radio guy. He's got good
ideas. He's a radio dude. And to me that's the most important thing. The most important thing
is to not be a sports dufous. And I think that's kind of what you get into. And again,
this is no intention to knock Joe or any of these guys. Joe is a sports dufus. And I mean
that in the nicest way possible. Joe is a sports dufus who is kind of gumped his way into being on
WIP and same with like the ESPs and these guys who I like again I'm not ripping them
they're not radio dudes their thought is they're sports guys they're on the radio doing a
sports thing fine and look let me play a couple commercials and we'll go so take everything
I say as however you want to do it I'm sure there will be more people listening to this one today
because this thing's a story in Philadelphia and people are talking about it and whatever
fine but and again it's wild because i read these things from crossing broad and it's fucking
crazy that i feel the exact same way they do yet when i was doing the shit that like i when i was
making fun of this shit in town they couldn't write a nice fucking thing about me they just
waited for my fucking demise i have no idea why that was maybe they wanted to be the ones that would
say that radio sucked and me saying it was just no good for business or whatever but um i
agree with what they're saying, and I agree with what John Marks is saying. But if you need a
blueprint, and I kind of gave that blueprint whenever I was talking about how there was a job
opening and I never got a call. And again, look, I'm fine. I got a job here. Real talk. I've got
other people who've reached out to me that are like, shit, we wish we would have hired you. So I got
this job here. Like, I've got people reaching out to me that are like, we want you. And I'm
like, well, too fucking late. You know, like, what do you want from me? I, you know, I mean, like,
I'd, like, but there is a part of me. Like, I'm sitting here and I'm doing this rock morning.
show. And we talk a shitload for a music morning show.
You know, there's a part of me that wants, I want to be in the middle of shit again.
I want to be in the middle of where the opinions matter, not just like, here's a wacky story
about Florida man. Like, I'd like to do that. Like, I do. That's what I do.
I didn't get into this to be wacky FM DJ morning guy. I got into this because I like sports.
I like radio. I love giving opinions. And I like knowing that people value my opinions and view
them as something important. So, anyway, but here's the blue.
blueprint. What John's doing is good, but like it's passive and it's a one-off and crossing
Brottle right about it today because Philly loves media drama. And then it's on to the next one
they'll forget about it. So unless you're going to get the Phillies or the Eagles, which maybe
Scotty Maasteller will, I don't know. I'd also like, I would like a phone call from Scott
Massdeller because I've known the guy for a hundred years and the guy's been a fan of mine for
a hundred years, yet never picked up the phone
to call me back when I was out of a job and just say,
hey, we don't want you, whatever. Just ghosted my
ass. And I don't hate the guy.
I don't think he's a piece of shit. I just want to, like,
hey, what's the deal? But anyway,
because as I said before,
if you wanted to get attention for fanatic
and really put a lot of ears and attention
on it, and this is no knock
on John or anybody else, you would have called me
and said, all right, we're putting John Marks on the air.
We want to put you on the air as well. You put me on the air
there. A bomb would have been dropped
on Philadelphia. Would it have sustained?
I have no idea. I believe it would have because I think the content would be good. And I think you would have had a good radio station because I think John is a very talented guy. And I think he's got the right idea. I think you're kind of set it like the tone that you set with the station with whatever they're doing in the morning isn't great. And I don't know what they do in the afternoon. So I have no clue. But I think that's a whiff on their part. But whatever, it is what it is. That would have been the first thing. More importantly, you've got two loser franchises that no one gives a shit about. The Flyers are a nothing burger. The 76ers are a nothing burger. They will never.
never be anything that generates any sort of ratings on radio at all. And that's anywhere.
I'm in Detroit. You think anybody's listening to Pistons games? The Pistons are really
fucking good for the first time and forever. You think people are listening to Pistons games
on the radio? NBA on the radio, dead end. Unless you're in a really super hockey town like
Pittsburgh, hockey on the radio, dead end. So unless you're in a town where it's all they got,
like Columbus, Ohio, or you're in a super passionate place like Pittsburgh that's like one of the
most passionate places ever about hockey. No one cares. Think people are listening to the Blackhawks
on the radio in Chicago. You think people are listening to the Kings on the radio in L.A. Nobody gives a
fuck. Okay. Come on. We all know this. That's number one. So go out and get an actual property that you're
never going to get because WIP is never going to let it go. Odyssey will never, under any circumstance,
let it go. You'd have to go out and roll out a giant Brinch truck for the Eagles. Or just give
them the station, say, hey, the frequency is yours. We are Eagles 97-5. And even then you probably
wouldn't get them. So there's number one. And you're not going to get baseball. Is baseball still
on AM and FM? From what I understand, and I don't know if, this is what I was told in the past,
and maybe things have changed with technology. But there's still a lot of old people that listen
to baseball. And there's a lot of old rich people that like the fact that on the 50,000-watt
signal, you can pick up the Phillies games at night, like up in the Poconos and shit. So I don't
know how true that still is but that was a thing and maybe it is maybe it doesn't the only way
you're going to beat them is something like that and if you're going to take shots like because
there's there's two forms two trains of thought here the one thought process is you just never
take a shot at anybody and you just go about your day the big dog never takes a shot at the little
dog that's what killed me is once we overtook mike i just kept going and going and going now
on one hand there's some great shit that came out of that later in the process like for instance
whenever missanelli's brother called and wanted to fight me and we called him the vagina
a doctor and spikes going after him. It was great shit.
Problem was that we did it too much and then eventually, you know, I think people got tired of it.
Whatever. I mean, that's fine. That happens. You make mistakes. You screw up. Whatever.
That's number one. But if you're going to go after them, go after them. Don't just be like passive.
Like, oh, this is fake take radio. Come listen to us. Let people know on a regular basis.
And this is a good opportunity to do it because the Eagles are not just coasting through.
a season where they're going to clearly win the Super Bowl
and people are just going to tune into WIP because they're
riding high and everything's hunky dory and they're
going to ride the Super Bowl to big numbers.
They're going to get big numbers because they just have big numbers.
But they're not going to ride it because there's a lot
of controversy. And there's a
divisive figure like Jalen Hertz
and you have an opportunity
to build your world, even
if it's not all the time, but you
need to be delivering more
direct shots at what they're
doing because if you truly believe it's bad
and your management believes what they're doing,
as bad and you're trying to catch them. You're not just going to catch them by being nice guys
and hey, we're slightly better than what they do and we're a little less hot takey than they are.
That's not going to get it done. A big part of your core moving forward, your 2026 should be
focusing on how all WIP does is delivers bullshit hot take radio that they are using to get reactions
because all they give a shit about is getting calls to get them through their fucking shitty shows.
that has to be your selling point.
I'm offering free consultation, okay?
This is a nickel's worth of free advice.
That has to be your plan.
Your plan cannot be to just kind of lightly attack them
and get a little bit of attention for it for five minutes
and then on to the next one.
And then you're forgotten about
and Crossing Broad doesn't write shit about you for months
until the next time.
John Marks makes a little dig it,
at Hugh Douglas or something, right?
Like, that can't be what you do.
Attack.
Attack.
Attack.
Why?
Because you have nothing to fucking lose.
And I mean this with peace and love to John and everybody else at 97-5.
No one gives a fuck you exist.
And I mean that, and it's not to say you suck at your job because real talk, there are dudes
at WIP who genuinely are bad radio people that are, and that kind of goes to the point
we're making in the previous episode about how WIP is bigger than that.
the people on it. You know, a sports center was bigger than Dan Patrick and bigger than all these
guys, right? Like there was some Stuart Scott documentary on the other day and I'm like, I don't
give a shit. Like Stuart Scott was a creation of ESPN and I didn't find him that interesting. Same
with Dan Patrick and all these other people, Keith Oberman. They're not that they weren't talented
people, but ESPN is still around and they're not on ESPN and ESPN still exists and you can debate
thrives or not thrives, but it's there. WIP can go out and hire cheaper people and give them
slight bumps and salary, because they're the brand.
You know what happened tomorrow if Joe, and I mean this with all due respect.
Angelo was the last person they had there that you would circle and go, he's bigger than the
brand.
And they're glad he's gone.
Real talk?
They're glad he's gone.
You want to know why they're glad he's gone?
They don't have to pay him a million dollars a year and they'll still generate revenue
and they can put on Joe DeCamara in the morning and things are fine.
You know what happened if Joe DeCamara went away tomorrow?
And I mean this with no knock on the guy.
They'd find the next Joe DeCamara who's toiling away at 97.
they'd bring him in, they'd put him through the car wash, and say, hey, deliver this kind of shit,
and he'd get big numbers in the morning.
The brand is bigger.
So what do you have to do?
You have to slay the brand and make the brand lame.
You have to convince people that WIP is not interested in you.
WIP is a behemoth.
WIP is just full of shit.
You have to attack the brand.
Attacking Joe Gillio ain't going to help anybody.
I know why you did it.
I'm not against it.
But, like, just attack you.
Joe Gillio and saying, I like Joe, but that's fake take shit. Like, I'm glad you did it. That's
nice. But at the end of the day, Joe Jillio is interchangeable. There is not one person on that
radio station that if they went away tomorrow, the station would hurt over it. And I don't say that
is an insult to anybody because I really like Hugh Douglas. I think he's a wonderful guy. Like,
I like Hugh. Like, I think he's a guy that like, to me, I watch you sometimes. I think he's
fucking bored. That's what I think. I think we used to have, and I know he's gone through a lot.
of bad shit. So, like, I'm not trying, like, like, I like him. I consider him a buddy. I root for him.
And I know that he's had a real fucking rough stretch. So, you know, peace and love. But, like,
we'd have Hugh on when it was me and Tank. And, like, we'd call Hugh and those two guys riffing
together was fucking gold. And it was fun and it was lively. Like, I tune this in. And I don't
know that Hugh Douglas enjoys sitting there doing this same shit every day. Because I think Hugh's an
interesting guy. And I don't think what they have him doing is overly interesting. That's not a
knock on him. That's a knock on the playbook. But what do I know?
the playbook seems to work.
But if you're going to attack them, you have to just fucking attack them and go.
And you have to be willing to take shot.
You need to grab their audio and fucking play it and mock them.
Make them call you and issue a C&D.
Make them call you and say, stop playing our fucking audio.
And when they tell you to stop playing the audio, take the audio and pitch it down to where it sounds like drugs, ink, shit.
where like skull and crossbones face mask guy,
you know, T-bone the drug dealer is explaining how he sells meth to people.
Slow down the audio, speed up the audio, go full fucking bore.
Because kind of half-assing it and delivering, you know, a general shot here, general shot here, don't matter.
Because attacking Joe Gillio or Elliott Shore Parks or anybody else ain't going to kill them.
The only way you can hurt them is to negatively impact the overall brand and make the brand lame.
Brands can survive with lame people.
Brands can survive with Joe Jellio delivering bullshit fake takes.
And brands can survive with super interesting fun people like Hugh Douglas seemingly being bored with the job.
They can survive guys who are nothing burgers over at 975 like Joe DeCamra being the morning guy.
Brands can survive small things like that all the time.
That's why you have to slay the dragon and the dragon is the brand.
You have to make the brand un-interesting.
You have to make the brand seem fake.
You have to make the brand seem broken and not interested in helping.
And part of that is then you have to get out in front of the people and you have to create a cult of people who are die-hard fucking people.
And you have to cut for you and fight for you.
They have to like whenever there's talks.
You know what doesn't exist if I had to guess in Philadelphia anymore?
Are you team Mike, your team Josh?
That kind of shit doesn't exist anymore.
so you have to go out and be willing to just say fuck it if i were scott masteller and he won't do
this and that's fine if i were scott mass stellar i'd run sweepers that directly take shots at
wip and elevate your brand while shitting on them that's what i would do and it's not just yo
hey we're the whatever like i would take their audio and i would play their fucking audio and then
whenever they tell me to stop playing it i would deepen the voices on the audio
and play it again and I'd get people talking like I think John's a super talented guy and I think
John is better than than the guys they have over at 97 5 just from a radio guy standpoint I think
Spike's a very good radio guy like Spike is a very knowledgeable smart radio guy um I don't know what
the show he's on sounds like so I don't listen I don't think Ike is a very good radio guy like I just
think Ike is what he is but um and I don't know about the guy that's on there with him I've never
heard him fritz is that again not trying to rip the guy I don't know I can only talk about guys
I know one that I've heard because I don't sit around and listen to WIP all day at all, actually.
The only time I see it is when I see the videos pop up on Twitter.
So I couldn't tell you the last time I just said, hey, let's flip on WIP.
Now, I've done it for 97-5 because genuinely I just wanted to see what John sounded like, and I like John.
But big picture, that's how you're going to win.
And by the way, they can't win.
I'm not trying to go, Adrian, Rocky, four on you, you can't win.
they can't win.
Unless WIP starts playing regional Mexican tomorrow, they can't beat them.
But they can be far more competitive.
Now, this all comes with me not having the knowledge of what they're doing in demo either.
They might be doing much better in demo and might be closer, still miles away, but closer.
But if you're going to win and you're going to be successful and you are going to try to play ball in this universe,
not just exist and be happy to be the number two alternative for sports and be the kind of like,
offshoot where it's like, well, if you're tired of all
their lame shit, come here. You have to hammer
at home into people.
What did we do to Mike? We made Mike seem
boring and lame and tired and general
knowledge Thursday and blah, blah, blah, right?
You have to do that for that entire
brand. And if you can do
that for that entire brand, you have a shot to at least be
viable and relevant and interesting and
gain passionate followers.
Because John is not wrong in this approach
in retweeting shit and saying, this is the kind of shit
you want. Like they are idiot rage baiters.
You've got the opportunity.
hurts is a great topic for it and people are so divided right now because the team actually
stinks at least the offense does you've got a shot at it right now but that's what mass
stellar and all these guys should be doing over at 97 5 is we're full on attack mode and we're
going to make WIP seem tired and lame and if you can do that you got a shot you at least got a
shot to be competitive and interesting otherwise you don't and you'll just exist and you'll
have guys like Marks who want to win. Marks wants to win. Mark's a passionate fucking radio guy.
I think that's why he liked me because I think he saw the same thing in me.
