The Josh Innes Show - Jon Marks v. Joe Giglio Rage Bait Pt.2

Episode Date: December 11, 2025

At this point, we have read the Crossing Broad story about this topic. I find myself annoyed because I have said the exact same things about Philly radio for 12 years. When I said it, no one was ag...reeing. Now, Jon Marks says it and it's gospel. Are the WIP hosts full of shit? Do they make up shit for a reaction? I'll share some stories from my time there. Conditions apply. all right part two another one so now let's get into the actual reaction that john marks had for this now john of course works now at 975 they have a giant uphill climb as it relates to the um beating wip they will never beat wip it is impossible it is an impossibility for them to beat wip because wip
Starting point is 00:02:20 is too much of a giant now now remember when i got there mike was beating wip in the afternoon until me and tony beat him and we beat him within a month and then never looked back, and then you know the whole story. I'm not going to get into it again. But let's see, Philadelphia Radio ratings. Again, these are just six plus ratings, so these don't really tell you everything you need to know about it. It's not totally fair. This is not what anybody uses to judge anything. But just to give you an idea, let's see, boy, you know what's pretty wild. And this is a surprise, actually. A real surprise here. Not that anything is happening with Fanatic because it's not
Starting point is 00:02:59 at least in 6 plus it's the same bullshit it's always been but it's wild that WIP has trended real down and that's after the baseball playoffs and everything else but in November so that's a stuff that happened in October I believe is how that would work
Starting point is 00:03:14 so they have really gone down in terms of overall but I think that just makes sense because baseball happens you're in the playoffs that's a big cum generator you're in a playoff push all that then football starts Then the team starts sucking in football a little bit, so you're down a little bit. Fanatic doesn't touch them anyway.
Starting point is 00:03:32 Again, all you need to know is that the WIP stream damn near doubles WPEN over the air. So it ain't doing much. Now, I could ask John and maybe the people over at the crossing brawl get some info from someone that has the actual min 2554 persons, 2554 numbers that people use and people sell. and maybe they can tell me some more details on that. But big picture, like this is, I mean, it ain't even close 6 plus. But again, nobody sells 6 plus. Nobody cares about 6 plus. So anyway, but let's see.
Starting point is 00:04:07 Let's play a couple commercials and let's look at the response that John Marks had for Joe Gillio. All right. So here we go. So John Mark's quote tweeted this. I guess that would have been yesterday. Yes, December 10th. If you haven't heard, I'm back on 97. 5 The Fanatic from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. If you want to say no to this kind of radio, give me a try.
Starting point is 00:04:30 I like Joe G. He's a good guy. But this is embarrassing. He doesn't believe what he's saying. It's deliberate and calculated fake take radio at its finest. To which he also says, if you want to listen to professional wrestling on the radio, this is the station. If you want the city to continue to live up to its toxic sports reputation, keep listening and supporting this. Well, reality is John, you and I both know they will. Like, I think deep down John knows. and places he won't talk about at parties, John knows that Fanatic has zero chance. Like, the only chance they'd ever have is if they went out one day and said, give us the fucking Eagles, we'll pay whatever it takes to get the Eagles, or the Phillies.
Starting point is 00:05:07 They have to get one of those two properties that will generate QM, will bring audience to the station, and then they got a shot. Here's the catch. WIP will never let them walk. So Fanatic will always be stuck with two shitty franchises that no one wants anything to do with. Basketball on the radio, you might as well just kick people. in the nuts. Nobody gives a shit about the NBA on the radio. It is a nothing burger. It is not a thing that people sit around and listen to. Therefore, it's not something that keeps people's
Starting point is 00:05:34 radios on the station when they get up in the morning because they were in the car listening to the Sixers. So they get up the next morning and it's still there and they leave it on. Same for hockey. No one gives a shit about those two sports on the radio. They are basically time fillers that do not cost the station much, if anything. So they're just there to fill time and to at least give you some brands to put on the station. There are two brands that matter in Philadelphia, and this is in most cities. NFL and baseball. Baseball is the ultimate QM generator.
Starting point is 00:06:03 What does that mean? Basically, every fucking night and afternoon for six months, you are going to have baseball on the radio, and baseball on the radio is the one that people always come back to. You will always do well having baseball, whether it's in the afternoon, whether it's at night, whatever. Even in a shitty sports town like Houston, where, where the sports radio stations get no numbers, when there'd be a baseball game on,
Starting point is 00:06:28 like when I was on at 790, and I was on in the afternoons, whenever a baseball game would be on in place of me, it would, like, triple. They were not nearly as big as, like, Philly's numbers are, but it would triple from where we were because baseball generates listenership. Baseball is an incredible QUM building thing.
Starting point is 00:06:46 Baseball is huge, and the NFL is good to have because it's just the Eagles, and it gets you big numbers on game day, and then it's all the ancillary program, that comes with it, coaches shows, shows at chickies and pizza and all that shit. So those are the two brands you have to have. That radio station has zero chance ever. I'm rooting for John because I like John.
Starting point is 00:07:03 I think he's a good guy. He's a radio dude. I respect radio dudes. I admire radio dudes. I think that's why he likes me as well, even though he and I have never actually formally met. I don't believe. But like that's how we are as people. We are radio dudes.
Starting point is 00:07:17 And I think he might also have some respect for me because he was buddies with sludge. And sludge knows what I'm about. So whatever. But let's read this crossing broad story. WIP is entry-level, performative outrage at this current point in time. It's normally bad, but now it's really bad. There's nothing worth listening to on the major day parts, just some of the night and weekend programming and the exclusive interviews that you get
Starting point is 00:07:39 when you pay a lot of money to the Eagles and Phillies radio rights. That's also unfair. Everybody loves to do that. People love to look at the people who are on in the major day parts and be like, these guys all suck, but there's a couple of weeks. guys that are worth a shit. They aren't. I guarantee, I have no idea who they have on on the weekend. But that's how people operate, right? Everybody always wants to act like they like the lesser people and that the lesser people are good. And usually those lesser people have no thoughts
Starting point is 00:08:05 of their own or anything interesting to say. I don't know who does weekends on WIP and I don't really give a shit. But like, that's just, people say that shit all the time. Like, oh, there's some weekend guys that we think are really good. If they were any fucking good, they'd probably be on on a major day part, either at WIP or at Fanatic. Generally speaking, they are not good. So spare me that. That's just bullshit that people like that like to throw out. The takeaway here is Marks is going directly after a guy who used to be his lead in. He likes Joe Gillio, but not embarrassing fake take radio. Now you've got both Bill Colerulo and John Marks going to WIP and asking people to switch over when it wasn't that long ago that
Starting point is 00:08:42 neither station would even mention the other by name. It's funny how like this is something that they admire. If you want to, you know, I sat there. I got shit on every fucking day by these people for going after their little guy Missinelli and everybody else. But like John Markson, whoever Bill Colorado is, they go after this shit. And it's like, we got guys going after the other stage. Motherfucker, I spent hours doing that. All you guys did was talked about me. I'm a piece of shit. It's so funny because you catch the WIP folks outside of WIP and they're all normal, decent people, or at least 95% of them are. You run into any of them at a bar, get to know them from other jobs before they started working at WIP.
Starting point is 00:09:22 It's just like any other acquaintance. You're shooting the shit, talking about regular stuff, asking about the wife and kids. But something perverse happens at 2,400 market or on location at Chickies and Peets or the Borgotter or whatever slimy car dealership is hosting the next remote. The microphone light goes on and everyone switches into performance mode. They're doing hot takes and rage bait and being negative and saying the muck, the dumbest, stupidest, most pointless shit. but like I that's the part that bothers me if I can I'll bring this back to me a little bit here I never fucking did that I know that people think I did that I never did that when I was in Philadelphia in fact I would get on the radio and I would do exactly what this gentleman here is doing
Starting point is 00:10:02 I would make fun of how outrageous and ridiculous the takes that people had were but for whatever reason I guess I was a little bit before my time I guess you're not ready for that yet but your kids are going to love it I was doing that shit before it was seemingly cool for John Marks to do it. And then everybody thought everything I said was for a fact and then I was full of shit. Go back and listen to some of the shit that I said that most of it ended up being right. But back then, like, I guess that wasn't acceptable. Now it's cool because Johnny Marks does it.
Starting point is 00:10:32 Again, I'm not ripping John. I like John. But because John Marks gets on the radio and says that Joe Gillio's full of shit and that the topics and that's raised me. This is all I fucking did. And this is the fight that I fought there. Go back and listen to when I was on at night at WIP. All I did was made fun of this shit. All fucking day.
Starting point is 00:10:52 When I would do the trolling segments that I eventually did in the afternoon as well, it literally was done to make fun of the rage bait shit that people do on radio on Philadelphia. Yet somehow nobody viewed that as some sort of cutting edge thing or something that's great because it's making fun of idiots. They just hated my ass so much that they couldn't give me any respect or any credit for saying the exact same shit that here in 2025 they are saying. They just couldn't do it. They couldn't just be like, you know, who's not all that bad, Josh?
Starting point is 00:11:19 Because he's saying the exact same thing we're thinking that radio here fucking sucks and he's trying to do something different. But Bill Collarulo and Johnny Marks do that. And it's like, boy, this is cutting edge. This is something. These guys are on there. That's good. We're glad they're saying it.
Starting point is 00:11:35 And who knows? Maybe it's because I was at WIP. If I were doing that at Fanatic, taking shots at WIP, maybe they would have found it different. But, I mean, it's bullshit. Like, it's just. Again, this isn't about me, but I'll make it about me a little bit because it fits into this, right? It is complete bullshit that that's the way this shit is written about now. but back when I was doing it 10 years ago
Starting point is 00:11:57 and taking shots at other people and talking about how bad the radio is and making fun of general knowledge fucking Thursday and making fun of everything else that these shitty stations were doing about how Fanatic was just
Starting point is 00:12:10 basically taking the castoffs from WIP and giving them fucking shows that all sucked and all that shit. I don't know. It is, it enrages me only because when you sit back and look at it, You're like, I said all of this shit.
Starting point is 00:12:27 I'm not, you guys acted like I was the biggest turd on the planet and we agree with what's good and what's bad. Did I say dumb shit sometimes it was wrong? Sure. Did I ever get on the radio and offer an opinion that I did not believe? No. And I might sound holier than now and pious and all that shit, but that is not what I did. I always believed what I said and just sometimes it was unpopular. But I never went out there and said, like I'll tell you this.
Starting point is 00:12:52 And I won't tell you who it was. but there was a show. This was never me and Tony. I never sat down with Tony when I was there or anybody else on the show and said, let's fake some opinions so we can fight on the air, right? But, like, I would talk with Adam and guys like that and say, hey, listen, can you play devil's advocate a little bit for me here?
Starting point is 00:13:10 I don't want you to fake anything. But, like, I need someone to argue with me on something. You don't have to come up with a fake opinion. Just needle me and call me stupid or whatever. So we have a little bit of back and forth, right? I will acknowledge doing that because it needs that. Like, people listening don't want the blow hard. on the radio to just be just riproaring the whole time and have nobody challenging him.
Starting point is 00:13:29 That's good. That is quality content. You need that. But I never said, let's sit down and this is going to be my take today and you're going to take this side today and we're going to yell about it. I never said that with Mark and I never said that with Tank. I never said that with whoever the fuck else I did the show with the thousands of people I did shows with there.
Starting point is 00:13:46 So I never did that. And I never, this is not what I'm about. Like maybe I'm the idiot because they got 30 shares and the way they're doing things works. So why would they change it, right? So whatever. But, like, I did see shows that would do that. I don't know how Angelo and those guys did shit because I was never there in the morning,
Starting point is 00:14:04 so I never watched Angelo's prep process. Do I believe Angelo did a lot of shit where he was full of shit for performance sake? Sure. Like, I think that Angelo said a lot of shit he didn't believe. But Angelo's view is he's an entertainer, and I wish I had that viewpoint. I wish I could be honest to God, I wish I can go in there and be Joe Gillio and these guys who just take a stance and we'll fight it to the death because it's entertainment. or a Stephen A. Smith or whomever. I wish I could do that.
Starting point is 00:14:26 It's just not in my DNA to do that. But anyway, so there was a show when I was there. And they would sit in an office with one of the programming people. And I would walk in there every day and they had like a little sheet. It was like one of those little like, here's a box, here's a box, here's a box. Here's going to be our topics. What's your take on this? All right.
Starting point is 00:14:44 Your take's going to, like I watched them and basically explain what the whole show was going to be to each other. And who had this side and how they were going to argue it. They would write out their fucking teases for. it and all this shit. And I'm like, I can't operate in that world. That is a bullshit world that I have no desire to be part of. And I watched it happen there. I'm not saying that's the only place it happens. And I'm not saying that these are bad people. I have no, I honestly God, I have no ill will against anybody there. Spike included. I have nothing. I've texted with Spike. I don't dislike Spike. You know, the shit was 10 years ago. The guy fired me.
Starting point is 00:15:13 Who gives a fuck? You know, like, there are very few people that I harbor resentment towards for something that happened 10 fucking years ago. Like, there are very few people that fall into that category. There are some, but very few. And so I have no bad blood with anybody there, I don't think. I mean, there are probably people in Philly who don't like me, but I don't have any bad blood on my end for most people there, except like the dickheads like Rob Cherry and Puds like that, who are just no talent losers who didn't like me anyway, like those type of people. There are actually some really nice, good people that are there. And there were some people who were shitheads, but for the most part, I think they were all pretty decent people, and it's a very performative business. And look, their job is not to be right about shit.
Starting point is 00:15:55 Their job is to entertain people and elicit a response, and they do that. But, like, I don't know, here's where it's the system and not the talent. And this is where I struggle in that. First of all, you ever notice that when you look at WIP, there is no such and such show. There is no Bill and Steve show or whatever. Every show now is morning, midday, afternoon. To me, that is by design. Why is it by design?
Starting point is 00:16:25 And maybe I'm looking a little too deep into this. But the design is all the parts are interchangeable. WIP is the star. Like, no offense to Joe Gillio, who I think is a hardworking guy and I liked him. So I'm not going to rip the guy. But Joe Gillio was a guy who was writing for like NJ.com. So was Elliot Shore Parks. They were like just dudes that wrote for fucking NJ.com.
Starting point is 00:16:50 And they discovered. And this is something I admire. because I can't do it, and that's why I'm probably playing fucking fog hat in fucking Detroit, and I'm not the number one guy in Philadelphia, which I could or should have been. That's facts. I should have been. I was on the fast track for that.
Starting point is 00:17:03 And look, I fucked up. But what they do is they found a niche of being just like, you know, baiting people. And when I got there, the whole thing was you need to take calls. You need to have a bunch of phone calls, right? That's the point. The blueprint for success there is rage bait, fake take. 15 people call show is done that's just how they operate there man like that's that's the vibe there and I don't know
Starting point is 00:17:30 it's like a chicken and egg thing like what came first you know was it a was it um you know did was the rage there first or did the radio create the rage I don't know you know I mean because the people seem to eat it up for all the people that are on the internet saying this is terrible and go John marks go go get them They have like 20 shares, and the fanatic has none. No offense. And I say that with peace and love. Like, what does the fanatic have?
Starting point is 00:18:02 And if the fanatic's going to keep doing that shit, just go all in. I don't know. I don't listen to the station, so I don't know what they do. Fanatics should go all the fuck in. Their imaging should be about how WIP is full of shit. Their positioning should be about how WIP is full of shit. And this is a good opportunity to do it. This would be my advice.
Starting point is 00:18:20 If I were a, actually, you know what? I've already gone 16. Gee, Jesus Christ. Some days I get through these things and I'm like, shit, that was only 10 minutes. I'm like 16 minutes into this fucking episode now. I'll do one more because I try to keep these, you know, tight. All right, let me do one more. I will tell you what the blueprint should be.
Starting point is 00:18:36 All right.
