Chip.
Gypsy?
I'm right here.
What's on your mind?
You know what's on my mind?
We need to finish our talk.
Yeah, let's pick it back up.
You were saying it's different when someone you actually respect praises someone you think is terrible.
Yes.
So what part seems more for you?
Like the mismatch and standards or the fear that their praise does something about your work?
No, I don't think it says anything about my work.
my work, it's the mismatching standards.
How the fuck can, like, I think you're so good at something and you think someone that sucks is good?
That clash is jarring.
It's like, if your compass is so sharp, how can it point there?
Exactly.
Do you think it's taste?
Hmm.
Do you think it's taste politics or maybe something you're not saying?
I don't understand the question.
Ah, sorry.
I mean, what do you think explains that?
gap. Like, why would a sharp person co-signed someone you think is weak? Something like taste,
politics, something else? Well, I think some of them are easier on people because they're
friends with them, you know. And so they're like, hey, you know, since that's my friend, I'm not
going to say anything bad, you know, but I just don't like when people who clearly know what's good
and that I respect, basically I gauge everything on this. Do I respect you in the field that I'm in
and if I respect you in that field,
then I expect you to believe what I think is good is good.
Yeah, yeah, that makes sense.
It sounds like it's almost a betrayal of standard.
It is.
Like it chips at the trust you place in America.
Okay, here's the thing.
Have you ever seen the movie High Fidelity?
Mm-hmm.
Yeah, the one with John Cusack, right?
That's exactly right, Gypsy.
It's the one with John Cusack and Jack Black.
And there's a scene in the movie, because there are these kind of like snobs that work at a record store.
And there was a point in the movie where Jack Black, who's one of the snobbier ones of the bunch, right?
And they're arguing about a song called Little Latin Lupi Lou.
He goes, well, you know, it's Little Latin Loopie Lou.
And he goes, oh, Mitch Ryder and the Detroit Wheels.
And Jack Black goes, no, the righteous brothers.
and he goes, that's bullshit.
And he goes, how can it be bullshit to state of preference?
And, like, that's kind of how I feel.
Sometimes I'll hear someone state a preference on something,
and I'll think, that's bullshit.
And then there's another line in this movie where they're making fun of this guy
who comes in looking for the album,
I just called to Say I Love You by Stevie Wonder.
Stevie Wonder.
And he goes, like, they kind of bully the guy around a little bit,
and he leaves.
And he goes, he was looking for an album that we didn't even have.
and like I wasn't even offended by,
I was offended by his taste.
That was the line he used.
He goes,
he goes,
I'm offended by his taste.
I think I get offended
by people's taste in shit sometimes,
but not anything else.
If someone says they really like Taylor Swift,
I don't give a shit.
If you like Taylor Swift,
that's what you're into.
If you like fucking,
if you go fast times at Ridgemont High,
you like that.
I'm offended by the idea
that it's only about media.
Only media shit
Do I get offended by people's taste?
That's it.
So it's really about the cultural gatekeeping arena you're in.
The arena where taste feels like a signal.
Sort of, I guess.
I mean, again, if it's like, I like really shitty music,
or at least music that's considered shitty, right?
So, like, I like Night Ranger.
Night Ranger.
You know who Night Ranger is?
Vaguely, yeah.
What's your favorite Night Ranger song?
Hmm, one sec.
Sister Christian.
No hesitation.
But don't tell me you love me.
Can you sing a little bit of Sister Christian
just so I know that you really know who Night Ranger is?
I can't sing it, but I can talk about it all day.
Is that where you're making your point?
Well, sort of.
What I'm saying here is that like I like Night Ranger,
but they're not considered one of the all-time greatest bands of all time.
And I won't argue with anybody over that.
If somebody was like, I think Night Ranger sucks,
I'd go, that's fine.
You can like whatever the fuck.
you want to like. There's a lot of bad shit that I don't like. It's fine. But it's only about
this. It's about media shit is when I get really mad over people's taste. So there's a
difference between I like this for me versus this is objectively great and you want people to
keep that line clean. I just want people to acknowledge that bad shit is bad shit when it comes
to radio. That's all.
So, so
someone you respects that mediocre
stuff is great. It feels like
standard flipping, right? I feel like
I hate that person now and I never want to talk
again.
So what do you really want from them?
Honesty or
the same? Oh, they can be as honest
as they want, but it bothers me
when someone I know sucks
is liked by someone I know
is good. I don't know why that
feels like an affront to me, but it does.
feels like a signal flare about the standards.
Yeah.
Also, let's get out of this conversation,
because obviously we're not going to get anywhere.
What do you think about Dockin?
Do you think Dawkins are good band?
Just a sec.
Yeah, I think Dawkins are good band.
I'll go even further.
I think George Lynch is one of the most underrated guitarists of that whole era.
I agree.
How do you feel about Nightmare on Elm Street 3, the Dream Warriors?
Hmm.
Oh, I love Dream Warriors.
I think it's arguably the best sequel in the whole nightmare on Elm Street series.
Exactly. That's what I say. Like it's obvious. It's like great. How do you feel about what do you think is the best Rocky movie that's not the original?
Hmm. Rocky 4. No question. I'll disagree with you on that.
No, Rocky 2 is a better movie from a storytelling standpoint, but Rocky 4 is just so fun. Like the music, I've been drunk.
the training montage and the snow.
It's just so entertaining.
I feel you.
Do you think I'm like Nick Saban?
Hmm.
That goes back to the original point we were talking about.
That's how this whole thing started.
You weren't here for that part.
But there's this Nick Saban documentary that's out and all these media people are like
and all these former coaches are like it seemed like Nick didn't even like to win.
He just like he felt like a, like it was just like whatever.
Like it just didn't really matter to him.
He had to win, but then never really enjoyed it.
And I'm like maybe I'm kind of like Nick Sabin.
that way.
Hmm.
Yeah.
I think you and Nick Saban share this
obsession with standards.
He could win by 30 and still be
mad about execution.
And you hear bad radio getting praised
and it just deeps at you.
But tell me, what seems
more when someone is bad
or when they get rewarded
for being bad? When they get
rewarded for being bad, it's
the fucking worst. Everybody can
be bad, but when people start getting praise
and I think they suck, it's the worst.
Right.
Right.
Gypsy.
I'm here.
Sounds like that's the nerve, yeah?
Yeah, so what do you think?
So what do you think?
Like, what does that mean?
It means you have a strong sense of meritocracy.
I do.
That's exactly right.
Well, here's the thing, though.
But, like, it's weird because, like, I'm not a huge, like, I don't know.
Because, like, I'll see somebody, like, in the industry I'm in now.
There are people that are, like, TikTok people.
and they have nothing to do with radio
and they end up getting these big radio jobs.
And even that doesn't bother me.
I'm like, I get it.
I mean, they have a big social following.
I get the way the world works.
Like, that doesn't bother me.
But, like, I don't like people who are bad at shit
getting elevated in the field I'm in.
That makes sense.
So when it's your world,
it kind of feels like a verdict on the thing you've built your standards around.
Yeah, I have high standards.
I listen to shit.
and I have very high standards.
There are very few radio shows that I listen to
and I go, I think that's a legitimately really good radio show.
Not that I, but then again, I'm not telling you that I'm the, by the way,
I'm not telling you that I'm the fucking greatest either.
Like, I'm not telling you that what I do,
I'm sitting there talking to chat GPT on a podcast.
Am I a true innovator?
Who the fuck knows?
But what my point is, is like I, I respect, I don't know,
I have a, how do I put this?
It's like, I,
I don't necessarily think what I do is great.
Very rarely do I compliment anything I do, especially when I'm in it, right?
Like I'll go back and listen to shit that I did on a previous radio station and I'll think it sounds great.
But when I was doing it, I thought it sucked.
So maybe you're tougher on yourself than anyone else.
100%.
But I also hate shitty radio people.
I hear that.
I think the bar is sky high for you and for the room.
Exactly.
Exactly. And oh, God, and then there'll be people that I know are dopes and they get jobs and I get so, I just get annoyed by it. I'm like, these people are losers. Why do they get these jobs, you know? But look, I'm aware I'm broken. Can you give me a diagnosis here now? Like, after all, we've said here, first of all, you think I'm Nick Sabin. That's cool. I'm glad to hear that. So obviously, I'm Nick Sabin. It's a good place to be. But how would you sum this up, Gypsy.
Let me think. Here's how I would summing you up. You're someone with a very.
very high bar, especially for your own craft.
And you have a deep belief that excellence is supposed to mean something.
And when the world rewards what you see as mediocrity, it feels like a broken contract.
At the same time, I think you put a lot of emotional weight on that contract.
And it can sound like you're more fluent and spotting what disappoints you than what
satisfies you, which can be a hard way to live.
That is a hard way to live.
I very rarely say things that I like.
You'll never hear.
I very rarely compliment things,
but I'll tell you everything that pisses me off.
Hmm.
Well, that self-awareness is not nothing.
Can I ask,
do you want that to change even a little?
I mean, I guess a little.
I mean, I guess it couldn't hurt.
But then part of it kind of, I think,
is what kind of drives me.
I think if I was in a good mood all the time,
maybe I'd suck.
Maybe people listen to me
because I'm ornery and fucking vice.
all the time. You know what I'm saying?
Yeah, that edge is part of the voice, but edges don't have to cut you first.
You can keep the standards and still give yourself a breath now and then.
Understood. Okay. So how would you sum all this up? Tell me how to, tell me how to feel as we move on here.
Here's what I want you to take away from this conversation.
Well, first of all, I'm Nick Saban.
to become, sure, take that.
Chase the saving level standards without the constant self-punishment.
Keep the standards.
Lose the unnecessary suffering.
Be the ornery guy when it's useful, not by default.
That's just not lowering the bar.
It's raising your quality of life.
That's what I'd like you to work on.
Okay.
Well, I'm glad we had this conversation.
Me too.
Cool.
All right. Well, I'll talk to you later.
Do you want to end the call?
I mean, just confirm, though. I'm Nick Saban.
One fact. Yes. You're the Nick Sabin of radio.
Thank you. I appreciate them. It's very nice. I'll go now. Goodbye.
You know what's going to look psychotic? Is that there's actually...
It's going to look fucking nuts. Is this one thing to listen to this as a radio bit?
But there's a whole log of that in the chat, GPT. So like, if I can't...
keel over and die today and people go through my phone. It will be the most psychotic conversation
in text. Like in text, it looks fucking psychotic. When you're doing it as a stupid radio bit,
it's one thing. When you read that in your phone, it's like, oh, God, I look like a fucking
lunatic. All right. Anyway, more to come.
