Starting point is 00:00:00 Dadgum, this is an exciting day because we know football's getting even closer now because we've got hard knocks and we've got this awesome looking SEC show that debuts on Netflix tonight. And then Thursday we have the full on start of preseason football. My God, this is exciting. What a time to be alive. I know I tell you guys this pretty frequently. I never thought that I would be someone who got excited over the idea of football coming
Starting point is 00:00:29 back to the degree that I am excited about football coming back. Like, me and Jim used to sit around and make fun of people who were like, only 30 some odd more days until football season. But now I am that dude. Now I, like, count down in my mind, and maybe, and I don't even, it's not even maybe, it's definitely a situation where alcohol mixed with betting plays a big factor in it. But I am so excited that football's coming back. Like even to the point that preseason football, which never used to excite me, preseason football excites me because I'm going to bet on it.
Starting point is 00:01:05 And then we're going to drink booze and we're going to bet. And now we've got Hard Knocks. And Hard Knocks is such a shitty show now. Like, you know, it used to be great. Then what happened is social media and everything took over and everybody became super conscious of how people portrayed them and how they were covered and what people thought of them. So you went from having a really good kind of authentic show to having a show where people don't. even really want anything to do with it. They try to avoid being controversial or doing anything that would be interesting. And controversy is interesting. And people don't want to be controversial
Starting point is 00:01:37 and they don't want to make news. Therefore, you don't really get a ton of stuff that's exciting. And that's kind of where you are right now with Hard Knocks. But even with that, I am excited about the return of Hard Knocks. I think it's the Buffalo Bills. I'm excited about this SEC show, which debuts today on Netflix. I don't know if anybody's watched it yet. I have not. But I'm excited. Football's here. And it really is like as you get older, I think you just appreciate football and how glorious it is and how much every game matters and how much it's an event and how it truly is such a huge part of who we are as a people and our culture. Let me play a few commercials and then we will continue. I mean, it's wild how important football is to us as
Starting point is 00:02:24 American people, but it is. It is truly important. It is the most important thing we have going on. And again, I was never one of those people. I never fawned over. Maybe it's because my baseball team is so bad now that baseball season means very little to me. And since I've moved around, like I don't follow the Astros as closely. I follow them a little bit, and playoffs will come around and I'll follow them. I live in Detroit, so I'm kind of getting into watching the Tigers. And thank Christ they're good. I can only imagine what it had been like had I moved to two or three years ago when the tigers were atrocious. Hell, I was on the radio in Detroit doing mornings on this very radio station,
Starting point is 00:03:01 but from Nashville when the tigers were playing and the tigers were terrible. So I can't imagine being here for terrible baseball. And I've been in cities for terrible baseball. I was just in St. Louis. Terrible baseball. I was in Houston that first time, terrible baseball. So, like, I get it. But at least that the baseball's good and the basketball's pretty good here and the hockey
Starting point is 00:03:20 kind of sucks, but we'll see. And football should be pretty good. So I'm in a good situation with that, but like, I just, over time, I've kind of lost interest in the day-in, day-out grind of baseball for whatever reason. I don't know if it's because of the – well, I mean, it's obvious that the game is boring now. You can argue with that, and you can – look, you can have your opinion on it. Baseball is boring. And that's why the ratings aren't very good for baseball. That's why attendance at a lot of places aren't very good.
Starting point is 00:03:47 That's why baseball keeps coming up with gimmicks to try to make people more interested in the game. Baseball is just not a very exciting sport right now. People aren't as locked into it. It's 162 games. You could go 10 straight games and none of those games will matter. People aren't as into it. So you kind of just coast through the summer. Like everything is basically a distraction until football.
Starting point is 00:04:08 Like that's how we operate as a people. Everything is a distraction until football. Everything is just a means to getting back to football. College, pro, high school, it doesn't matter. everything that we watch from the middle of February into early September, late August is just something to hold us over and distract us from the most important thing we have in our country when it comes to sports, and that is football. So yeah, it's great when your baseball team is good and it's a distraction.
Starting point is 00:04:38 If you're in Philly right now, Phillies just took two out of three from a really good Detroit team. It was a great series. By the way, the people here in Detroit, all they can talk about is how amazing it was that the ball games were in Philadelphia. So congrats to you guys, Philadelphia. They're blowing you here on the radio in Detroit because the atmosphere was a playoff type atmosphere and people dug it. But like that's what they're talking about. But now today with hard knocks, like hard knocks is almost the official start of football, not even the Hall of Fame game. The Hall of Fame game is great and I hit some bets on the Hall of Fame game. The Hall of Fame game's fine. It really doesn't feel like
Starting point is 00:05:13 football season starts until Hard Knocks. And now, and maybe this the show, on Netflix will become a yearly thing where you get the weekend, week-out grind of the SEC. Now, I don't know if this is a show that's going to span the whole season or if it's just a pre-season thing. Let me look that up. SEC Netflix show. How long is this show going to go? Let's see.
Starting point is 00:05:36 Or is it just a documentary? I'm not sure. Is it a full-on, like, weekend, week out? Let's see. This is from Outkick. Netflix's college football series will have viewers begging for more. and it's TV gold. Let's see.
Starting point is 00:05:51 Streaming platform is Netflix. The plot, the series places viewers inside some of college football story programs and the SEC through unfiltered access. We take an exclusive look at key matchups throughout the 2024 season to show the passion and drama. Okay, so this is all shit from last year. Okay, so this isn't one of these things where they're going to follow you throughout training camp and throughout the year. This is from last season. Okay, cool.
Starting point is 00:06:15 Now I know that. There's seven episodes. This is great. So that means there's already seven episodes there. It's all based on last year. Shitty year for LSU, but it's fine. Cool. I'm into this.
Starting point is 00:06:28 In the trailer, you see, like, Lenora Sellers. Lenora Sellers, who is a sleeper to win the Heisman, he had a fun year last year. They had some amazing games. LSU had to pull off a miracle and get a blown call from the refs to beat Lenores and South Carolina last year. This is good shit. I am excited. This is going to be entertained. Meaning this is going to be good.
Starting point is 00:06:50 Let me read this review. Now, again, this is from Outkick. So Outkick is never going to write a bad review or anything about something that has to do with SEC football. So, again, it's important to see who the source is. And that's in anything, by the way. Like some hipster liberal persons probably not going to write a good review of the SEC football show because they don't give a shit and they don't like the SEC, and most of them hate the South. So they're going to think this shit's out of line, out of control, and they should be focused on more important things.
Starting point is 00:07:18 So, again, the source matters for a review. I was interested in SEC football any given Saturday the moment I saw the trailer Netflix released a couple weeks ago. I'm sure many college football fans felt the same way. How could we not? Netflix dropping an SEC football documentary weeks before the season starts is a genius move. It's the perfect way to prep for the months of action ahead. Who wrote this? It just says, from outkick.
Starting point is 00:07:45 It doesn't even. Oh, Dave Hookstead. Okay. Dave Hookstead is the person responsible for writing this. Let's see. Fortunately, I was able to get my hands on some screeners early ahead of its release and with the fiancé out of town, the weekend, I binged. It didn't disappoint.
Starting point is 00:08:02 I was hooked from the first episode as the documentary takes football fans behind the scenes of multiple SEC programs that includes Florida, Auburn, Arkansas, Vanderbilt, and perhaps most interestingly, LSU. It's a rare level of access fans aren't used to as we watch the 20-24 season unfold. LSU is just constantly right in the middle of the spotlight as it relates to interesting documentaries.
Starting point is 00:08:24 This is me saying this now, not this story, but there was a great documentary about LSU being like the brand or whatever, what do they call it? What the hell do we, they call LSU, not the brand, but it's the, whatever the hell they call it, but it's a big time NIL school. And it's a big time, you know, their whole selling point is you come here and there's going to be NIL money and you're going to be like Paul. Skines and Livy Dunn and JD5 and you're going to be a lot like these guys and Shaq produced that and Shaq obviously went to LSU.
Starting point is 00:08:55 So that was part of it. But that was interesting and apparently this is going to be very LSU-centric, which is awesome. I'm not even an SEC guy. I'm a big 10 man, says this dude, but loved every second of the action. It's incredible to see how complex and dramatic things are behind the scenes at major college football programs. As someone who used to work in college sports, none of it surprised me, but it was a fun reminder of how many moving parts there are involved in the public that the public never sees.
Starting point is 00:09:22 What happens on the field on a Saturday is a pinprick in the timeline of things that must be done in order to win. Give me some more details on LSU. Having said that, I also have another big takeaway. It's incredible how unlikable Vanderbilt quarterback Diego Pavia and LSU coach Brian Kelly are in the series. If their goals were to enter the series and rub everyone the wrong way, then job well done. Well, let me tell you this, okay? Brian Kelly is going to be hated by people no matter what. No matter what Brian Kelly does, people fucking hate him.
Starting point is 00:09:53 I don't hate the guy. I'm going to hate him if he loses to Clemson and they lose a third or fourth straight year of a season opener. Fine. But like the amount of people that hate Brian Kelly is absurd. Like I saw a story that Jilly sent me yesterday that there was an LSU hype video. And in the LSU hype video, I guess there was a shot of one of those little, those tall things that the guys film practice from, right? and everybody turned around and said, oh, look at that, it's making an illusion to the kid that died at Notre Dame, and LSU had to pull the shit down.
Starting point is 00:10:23 Like, people hate Brian Kelly. It is wild how much people hate this guy. And the only thing this dude can do is go out and win a natty. Go win the damn title, Brian Kelly. I'm sick and tired to hear these fucking people shit on the LSU coach on a consistent basis. Fuck them. Go out there and shut them up. They can hate you and you lose.
Starting point is 00:10:44 There's no winning. If they hate you and you win, you can grab your dick and say, go fuck yourself. You've got to do it, Brian. At least go beat Clemson to open the season. Now, Pavia is unlikable. Like, good for him going out and beating Alabama. But Diego Pavia just comes across as a douchebag. And that kind of is what it is, whatever.
Starting point is 00:11:04 But the hate for Brian Kelly is remarkable. And it's kind of like a nickelback type hate. Like, at the end of the day, is there a ton to hate about Brian Kelly? like he doesn't win the big games no he was the coach at Notre Dame which kind of automatically makes you someone people are going to hate anyway like I get all of that and he's kind of like not smug like I don't view Brian Kelly a smug and then people talk about how he killed the kid that was filming practice like people pile on to Brian Kelly they hate Brian Kelly and he's kind of like nickelback if you ask people why they hate Nickleback if you ask people why they hate Brian Kelly they have no answer. It's just they hate him. Like there are certain things that are trendy and popular. And one of those things that is trendy and popular is you hate Brian Kelly. It's kind of like in Philadelphia. Like nobody knew, like in mind on a much smaller scale. It's not like people knew why they hated me there or hated me in Houston. There was just kind of an understanding
Starting point is 00:12:03 that you were supposed to hate Josh. Like that was the character. That was the role. They'd say like, like if you brought up Josh in us, the first thing people would say is, oh, that guy sucks and he hates this and blah, blah, blah. It wasn't true, but a lot of people, that was the perception. And there's this perception of Brian Kelly, like people hate Brian Kelly. But in this story, they say that Brian Kelly is a whiner, and Pavia comes off as an arrogant clown with one big win to his name. I wouldn't want to invite either of them to a house party. You can watch SEC football any given Sunday out now on Netflix. Well, David.hooksted at outkick.com.
Starting point is 00:12:39 Congrats on writing, like, a four-sentence review. Like, amazing what people get paid to do. Like, you write a review of this TV show. There's no depth in it whatsoever. It's just, oh, I'm excited about a football TV show, and Brian Kelly is unlikable, and so is Diego Pavia. Like, I'm not telling you that Brian Kelly's the greatest coach ever, and I'm not telling you that he's a super likable guy. But they hate this dude gets, the amount of vitriol, like the amount of, like, the amount
Starting point is 00:13:08 of hate and fire that people have for Brian Kelly is wild and the only thing that can make it good is if he wins titles he must win a title Brian booby help your boy out like they're going to hate you no matter what anyway you might as well get some hardware to go along with all the hate that you're getting give me the hardware give me titles Brian Kelly give me something start out one and oh like to me that would be like winning a championship it would be like like the sad as that sounds LSU winning their first game of the year and starting 1-0 would actually be like the greatest fucking thing ever. And you can throw up the birds at people. They can make fun of you for the weird recruiting videos you've done, all that. Go 1-0. That's all I'm asking of you.
Starting point is 00:13:54 Go 1-0. For the love of Christ, go 1-0, beat dabbo. Another guy that people hate, but they hate him for different reasons. They hate Brian Kelly because they think he's a smug asshole and they think he killed a kid at Notre Dame. They hate dabbo because he's white and religious and doesn't dig too deep into the portal so they just think he's a racist religious fuck but as far as brian kelly goes brian kelly is hated because he's just an asshole seemingly or just a dope whatever they hate him go want to know this is truly a battle of two coaches that the internet fucking despises they hate dabbo which wasn't always the case dabbo used to be kind of a guy people liked now they hate dabbo they've always hated brian kelly so that's going to be an epic battle in week one of the
Starting point is 00:14:34 year and lSU needs to go to the fake death valley and win that fucking game for the love of win that game. All that said, I'm going to watch that show tonight, and then I'm going to report back tomorrow when people say that Brian Kelly's unlikely, and I'm going to tell them to pound fucking sand, because that's my head football coach at Louisiana State University, and we're going one and oh. And we got hard knocks, which by the time I come back tomorrow, I'll probably tell you it was boring like most hard knocks is, but still, anywho, more to come.
