The Josh Innes Show - Shane Gillis To Host The ESPY's
Episode Date: June 24, 2025Shane Gillis will be hosting this years ESPY Awards. No one really cares about this awards show. That said, it's kinda funny to me how Trump is back in office and now these companies are rolling ...out the "edgy" comedians and rolling back DEI. I don't know if I'm a fan of Gillis. He's fine. I don't hate him. But, I don't really like that crew of Joe Rogan dudes... Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

So this is random, but I've been seeing this viral clip go around in different reels on
Instagram of Meghan Markle on this podcast with this annoying looking person. And the
clip is just being ridiculed by everybody because like the lady's like, how are you?
And she's like, oh, I'm so good. That's so sweet. Thank you for asking.
But how are you?
And it's just like insufferable, like cringey shit.
But one thing I've taken from this,
because I don't really pay a lot of attention to Meghan
Markle or things that happen over in England,
because I don't give a shit.
Meghan Markle is super hot.
Like, I know that I'm not telling you anything you don't already know. I'm not breaking news here. Like hey, congratulations, Josh. Tell us about how water is wet.
But Meghan Markle is super duper hot. Like a beautiful complexion. Like just gorgeous chick. So like she can do annoying shit all she wants.
I don't care. I find her to be quite alluring like she like I
think I drunkenly told this to Julie the other night. She goes
Megan Markle. Megan Markle. You bet your ass Megan Markle. Let
me watch this. Hold on.
So important. And I think so many people also have this
question for you is, you know, Megan, how are you? And are you okay?
That's so kind. I am. I'm better than okay.
How are you?
I know you always make it about me. Today, which by the way...
I take it so bad. And this chick has the most annoying face I've ever seen, this woman doing this interview.
I have no idea who this is, but she just has an annoying face I've ever seen this woman doing this interview. I have no idea who this is, but she just has an annoying face.
But Meghan Markle is super hot.
Again, breaking news.
I know Chick's been around for 100 years.
Smoking hot, man.
Anywho, let me play a couple commercials and let's get into some other stuff.

Alright, here's a headline for you. Comedian Shane Gillis chosen to host the ESPYs on July 16th.
See, ESPY is just fucking with people now.
This is what they're doing.
So it's funny when all the DEI shit started rolling back.
It's almost like all of these entities viewed that as like an opportunity to put in these
kind of douchey Joe Rogan friend comedians and all their shit.
They're like, watch this.
Now that you know DEI, now that Trump said DEI is for the birds, watch this shit. Shane
Gillis hosting the ESPYs. Like a lot of these companies are doing this now. You start seeing
they're like mainstreaming a lot of these dudes and you're seeing more of it and like
their stand-up specials are more prominent. I have nothing against Shane Gillis. Like
he actually seems like kind of a cool guy. Here's where I'm torn. I'm torn because I don't know that I think
he's funny because I think he comes from this new era. I think there was an era in the 80s,
70s and 80s where comedy was at its zenith. The high point of stand-up comedy was the
70s when you had
like George Carlin and you had Richard Pryor and then there was the big boom in the 70s
where everybody was becoming huge television stars because they were comedians like David
Letterman, Jay Leno, Robin Williams. Like almost every human on the planet would get
a sitcom after becoming a great stand-up comedian whether it be at the comedy store in LA or they get on Johnny Carson like stand-up
comedy was the biggest thing in the world at that time and totally.
And I think there were a lot of dudes who were like truly controversial and said shit
that was like really kind of like oh shit like Sam Kenison right like Sam Kenison the first standup
that he did which I forgot which album that was I don't think it's have you seen me lately
it whatever the first Sam Kenison like the first big Sam Kenison standup album mixed
with the the the TV specially did that I think was on like a a Rodney Dangerfield thing maybe
but whatever that first Sam Kenison album
was, like last year when I was delivering DoorDash a lot, I would listen to some of
these old stand-up comedian, stand-up albums. I want to say Louder Than Hell or Breaking
the Rules. I think it was Louder Than Hell. So Louder Than Hell was probably the one that
I'm referring to. And then there was
Have You Seen Me Lately, which was also I think I listened to
that in its entirety too. Like it's pretty good too. But
before Sam became this huge star and was you know, always high
and everything. His early shit was great. And it was truly
controversial shit, right? Eddie Murphy did shit that is truly
like, oh, if you listen to it now, you'd be like, whoa, that's like really controversial. Dice Clay, which is the character, the Dice Clay character,
said a lot of shit. And you'd be like, whoa, that's pretty fucked up. And those were legit
people saying things, whether they had legit purpose in what they were saying, whether it was
like super political, like whenever you started getting into the late 80s, early 90s, when
political like whenever you started getting into the late 80s early 90s when Richard were rather when George Carlin kind
of turned a corner like 70s George Carlin had a message and
so did 80s George Carlin, but when you got into late 80s
early 90s black jeans tucked in black shirts slick back hair
coming off of Bill and Ted there was a different George
Carlin who was just biting and hard-edged and Bill Hicks guys like that who like were truly controversial people
What I think we're getting now with comedians and I think Gillis falls into this category
I think Rogan falls into this category
basically all of these comedians like kill Tony and all these people who kind of fall into that category of
Like Joe Rogan's friends people that were made stars by appearing on Joe Rogan's friends, people that were made stars by appearing
on Joe Rogan's podcast. I think they say shit that's not really that offensive or that really
shocking but because of the era we live in where everything is cancelable, they do just
enough to seem controversial but not really be that controversial because if Shane
Gillis were truly controversial, Shane Gillis would not be hosting the ESPYs. Like I think
we've made guys who then they're benefiting from the Shane Gillis benefits from it, Rogan
benefits from it. A lot of these mostly white dude comedians that hang out on the Joe Rogan
podcast and have their own podcasts and become big stars. They have become dangerous and
daring due to the fact that they exist in a world where nothing
is dangerous and daring. Therefore, they look even more
dangerous and daring. They're scary. They're dangerous. Like
I've watched like Shane Gillis' show Tires is on its
second season. I watched the first season. I've watched about half of the second. When I watch it,
it's passable and like some of it's pretty funny, right? But then it's kind of like,
like it's fine. It's, it's, it, but like honestly, like if're talking about shows just based on comedy, real talk,
The Studio, the show that's on Apple TV, there was a better episode. One of the best episodes
I've seen of a show in a while is the Ice Cube episode, the one with Ice Cube in the show The Studio with what's name Seth Rogen. That show to me, the multiple
episodes of that that I thought were really funny were exponentially funnier than anything
I've seen on tires. It's not to say the tire sucks, it's passable. It's not like what I'll
turn off. But you watch that and you're kind of like, eh, it's fine. Like when you watch Ricky Gervais host the Golden Globes and just eviscerate these people,
you're like, holy shit.
When you go back and watch Norm MacDonald host the ESPYs and he's making OJ jokes and
everyone's uncomfortable, that's good shit.
Like I don't know.
And I'm sure he'll take a couple of chances and there'll be some oohs and ahs from the
people in the crowd. I just. I'm sure he'll take a couple of chances and there'll be some oohs and ahs from the people in the crowd.
I just, I'm annoyed.
It's kind of like when I would get on the radio and I would call somebody a pussy and
everybody would go, holy shit, he called someone a pussy.
I knew that based on FCC guidelines, I could call someone a pussy, but most people would
think that's not allowed.
Well, it's allowed for you to call somebody a pussy on the air
So I would do that and people go holy shit. This guy's taking some risks
He's a badass
Like I think these guys kind of do that now where like all you have to do is be kind of slightly right-wing
Still working some jokes about the other side and do some shit and you'll make a couple of racial jokes
And then you're daring
and all these people will gobble it up because they're like we hate the woke so i still don't
know like i was talking to a buddy of mine he was pissed that i don't find shane gillis to be funny
he's like you take that back i'm like i i don't know like i just like i want to i feel like i'm
supposed to think shane gillis is funny like I'm supposed to think he's just the most brilliant guy like he's on
the Pat McAfee Big Night Out show and like and like I'm
supposed to feel this way. I'm supposed as like 38 year old
white guy who hates the woke like I'm supposed to view Shane
Gillis as a hero. I was supposed to watch the Joe Rogan stand up
the live one and think it was the most brilliant thing I'd
ever seen and I went into it wanting
to feel that way. But then I didn't. And that's how I feel
about a lot of this shit. Like I find myself watching other
stand ups on Netflix that are not, you know, super kind of
like right wing pandering type people like the Shane Gillis is
in those. Like I'll watch what the funniest stand up I think
I've seen in forever is Baby J, which is the John
Mulaney stand up, which is really just him telling stories
for an hour. And it's about how he went to rehab. If you've
never watched that, it is truly remarkable. He's an amazing
storyteller. And he is certainly nowhere near Shane Gillis and
these guys like with the right wing comedy or whatever. Like
he's not like that.
So again, when people look at me and go, oh, you're right-wing zealot, are you?
Like, I think if I were a true zealot, I would like and laugh at every single thing Shane
Gillis does.
Like, Shane, like, there's like a good, like he's got a good trump, right?
Like, and they'll do shit with Kil Tony and I'll laugh at some of it.
I'm not a prude as it relates to comedy shit.
Like, I don't care if it's offensive shit,
but at least make it funny. Like our boy Juggalo Trey was on Kill Tony and he's making these fucking jokes that are like
whoa, and I'm laughing my balls off.
But I feel that that's happening naturally.
I feel like some of these guys are kind of embracing that they're like the new voice of this right-wing
world and a world of woke and I think they try too hard sometimes.
Like I'll throw on like there's a Jeff Fox where they stand up from a couple years ago
and I'll watch that and I'll laugh my ass off.
Maybe I'm just an old man at this point but I was watching Sebastian Maniscalco, his most
recent stand up maybe last year, laugh my ass off at it.
Like these people I find genuinely funny, Maybe I'm just way off here and miss
the boat. I don't get Shane Gillis. I don't hate him. I'll laugh at some of it. But it's
just kind of like Joe Rogan as a comedian to me like at that last standup. I know I
was supposed to love it. Didn't. Podcast I enjoy. Standup I don't. Whoever that guy
is with the mustache there's like the
guy with the black hair and the mustache whatever that guy's fucking name is I don't like him
either I don't know I don't I used to love what's her name the blonde haired gal I loved
her so much I don't remember her name the chick from st. Louis and I loved her and then
she did the and this is kind of my hipster moment. I had
a hipster moment with this chick. But she did the Brady roast and everybody was obsessed
with her and she was everywhere. Nikki Glaser. She was everywhere and everybody's talking
about how she's the most brilliant thing they've ever heard. And I'm like, I liked her like
three stand up specials ago. Now I'm over this chick. I'm sick of hearing about her.
That was my like, I liked green bay green day before like American idiot moment
That or dookie. I liked green day before dookie then dookie came out. I'm like fuck all you I was ahead of the game
I like Nickelback. I like the first Nickelback. I'm everything after that. I hate like it was my hipster moment, you know, I
Don't know what kind of shit we're gonna get from Gillis
He's obviously gonna try to push some limits and piss people off and upset some people and just his existence will upset some people
Like I guarantee you can go to social media and read if they post that story
There'll be a lot of people who are like I'm never watching this because I'm not here to deal with this racism
And do you remember why he got fired from SNL and so like those people will make it kind of controversial
It is fascinating though that once Trump got back in the office and the DEI shit
started rolling back, all these companies were first in line to be like, yep, no DEI here.
And now like you're seeing ESPN, like, I mean, we're really featuring Pat McAfee. And now we
got Shane Gillis hosting the ESP's and like, they're really pushing it. It's like we had to
wait for permission. The permission came when the American people voted Trump in and no more Biden
and Kamala. And now it's like, we're just going to go all out. It's like a rumspringa
for these people. It's like they've been held captive for the last four years and now their
moment has come where they can start doing the shit they really want to do like let's
pander to this side now. We've been four years pandering to these dipshits. Now we got four
years with these dipshits. Let's pander to them now." And that's kind of the way this thing is gone. But again, I
just I don't get like I'm fine with Shane Gillis. I try to
watch the show and laugh and some moments of it are funny
tires. But I'm like, like, I don't know. Like, like, to me,
like Shane, like that show, like, if you watch Curb, Curb is
the most brilliant
television show maybe ever made, right? It's better than
Seinfeld. It is a brilliant show. And the shit that they get
away with in curb is like, Whoa, like you feel like they're
pushing real boundaries. And it's truly funny. Like, I feel
like sometimes these Shane Gillis shows and these other
guys are just kind of like, for racial sake or I don't know
how to exactly put it. It just doesn't feel the same. Watching Larry David do what he
does and the way the storylines develop and the moments develop in that show versus Tyres
which is just kind of like crude for crude sake is I don't look maybe I sound like an
asshole I just don't get it but anyway more to come.
