The Josh Innes Show - "The Conners" Final Episode
Episode Date: April 24, 2025"The Conners", a spinoff of "Roseanne" aired its final episode last night. I haven't watched an episode of this show since they booted Roseanne. But, I watched the final episode to see how they wra...pped it up. I thought it was kind of cheap and unfair to Roseanne. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

roseanne aired its final episode last night i don't watch the show i i kind of boycotted it
after the first season of the roseanne wasn't really a reboot i guess it was a reboot but more
of a continuation because it was same show show with the same people, same storyline.
So it was just kind of the rebirth of Roseanne in 2018, which was this giant rating success.
And I watched the first season of that, and I thought it was really good.
I laughed at it.
And part of it was nostalgia, right?
Part of it's because it's Roseanne.
I think Roseanne was such a good show.
I watched it when I was a kid.
Like back when I was in Poplar Bluff, Missouri, when I lived with my mom and my grandma and my sister and my grandpa.
We lived with my grandma, 815 Cole Avenue, Poplar Bluff.
And for a stretch of that, we didn't have cable.
For a good bit of it, actually.
I don't think we had cable.
We just had your basic shit.
You know, ABC, NBC, CBS, Fox, probably PBS or something. So we didn't have a ton. Like, we didn't have cable. of it actually I don't think we had cable we just had your basic shit you know ABC NBC CBS Fox
probably PBS or something so we didn't have a ton like we didn't have cable so this was in 1996
and part of 97 maybe because I went to school there I guess in 1996 so I lived there for a
little bit not a ton but I lived there for a little bit, not a ton, but I lived there for a little bit. And then my mom
eventually married some other guy in Arkansas, but we lived with my grandma for a while. It's
kind of hard. The timeline's kind of off for me a little bit because I was only 10 years old.
But I remember living there and we didn't have cable. And this is back when you were dependent
upon what was on TV. Now, eventually I think we got cable, but for a stretch, we didn't have cable.
So I just remember sitting there and you had to know when shows came on and you had to watch those
shows at that time. You guys know this. Most of you listening to this are old enough to remember
that life. So you'd be like, shit, even if it was a show you didn't really want to watch,
you didn't have very many options. So if it was Roseanne was on, you watched Roseanne. If Drew Carey was on, you watched Drew Carey.
And you almost taught yourself to like those shows because you had no other choice but to
like those shows. And that's kind of how it went. And Roseanne, I think the season of Roseanne that
was on whenever I lived at my grandma's was the last season of Roseanne when Jim Varney, Ernest, like somehow is in love with Jackie and Roseanne hits the lottery.
But then at the end, we find out that it was all just kind of made up in her head that none of that
actually happened. And it's a bunch of weird shit. And I've always just watched reruns of
Roseanne. I enjoy the show. It's a funny show. It's a very good show.. And I've always just watched reruns of Roseanne. I enjoy the show.
It's a funny show.
It's a very good show.
So when the show came back, there was a big nostalgia thing that I was really interested in it.
And I really like John Goodman.
And I'm like, all right, I'm in.
First season of it is fantastic.
But then Roseanne has the thing where she says whatever she said about whoever she said it about.
I don't even remember who it was.
But it was deemed racist and Roseanne is forced off the show and none of the people on
the show come to her defense and then the show lives on for like seven more seasons as the Connors
and I boycotted this I would not watch it I had no interest in watching it not even because like
I'm defending Roseanne so much but you see a show
where the vast majority of the people on this show are only who they are because they were on
this show it's not like John Goodman was some big star before John Goodman was on Roseanne then John
Goodman became John Goodman and then he was everywhere but the big part of that is because
he was on Roseanne the chick that played Becky the chick that played Darlene. I, I guess Lacey Gorson, I guess is the one that plays Becky.
Then there was second Becky, which was Sarah chalk, a chalky chalk chalky. And then there was,
uh, was it Sarah Gilbert or Melissa Gilbert, which Gilbert is Sarah Gilbert. And they, um,
and like, they all became something because the kid that played
the you know the the son played DJ they all became something because they were on Roseanne
and to me I was very turned off by the idea that when Roseanne got into her situation
nobody defended her and look some like you can criticize something someone does, but you can also step
up for someone and say, I don't believe this is who they are. They had a moment. And I think you're
allowed to do that. Before we get into any more of that, let's play some commercials and we'll
continue. All right, if you're ready to win some real cash during the basketball playoffs, you got

into the real deal find tia rosa tortillas at select grocery stores and get the good vibes going
like there is something to be said about loyalty right if if especially in this cancel culture
world because there are some things that people do and they're horrible heinous things that people do
like if you know my dad was a serial murderer well then i couldn't really defend that he's still my
dad but he's a serial murderer if my dad says something stupid I can defend it and say hey my dad said
something stupid but it's like he I know who he is I know what his character is said something dumb
whether for whatever reason happened in Roseanne's case she claims it's because she was on one of the
one of the sleeping pills I forget which one it was but that just made her fucking crazy other
people have said the same things that should have made her crazy she also has some she's got mental issues whatever fine
what I didn't like is that you got a group of people who were able to become something because
of Roseanne that just openly dismissed Roseanne at the first opportunity to make sure like well
we got to keep our show on the air and there's's a part of me that gets it. You don't want your life also ruined or your livelihood ruined because someone did something stupid.
You don't want your job to go away because your boss did something stupid.
You don't want your, like in this case, a lot of these people aren't doing big time things.
I don't think Sarah Gilbert and Lacey Gorenson or or Lacey Gorenson are doing anything major so the fact that they
got to spend seven years on primetime television on ABC doing another basically what is Roseanne
was I mean look they're not going to step up and do anything that's going to fuck them over
but on the other hand it's like this person gave you all this shit and gave you this opportunity
and made you who you are because of this super successful cutting edge show and then you basically just left them
out to dry and I think that's how Roseanne has felt about it and I I get that like a lot people
turn on you fast when things get dark and this is a big time television show people are getting
rich off of it it's a big deal of course after the fact after and this was in Roseanne's words
so who knows but after the fact John Goodman after he was in Roseanne's words, so who knows, but after the
fact, John Goodman, after he signs a new deal to stay on the Connors, then comes out and defends
Roseanne. Nobody defended her in the moment because people are scared. And that's kind of
the shitty situation we're in. She didn't murder anybody. She said something stupid, right? And
that's what happened. And look, words words can kill you words can get you fired you
do stupid shit but no one came to her defense so i bring this up because i'm watching tv the other
day and there's a uh a commercial a promo that runs for the final episode of the connors and i'm
like i'm kind of curious to see what they do here and apparently the storyline well the way they
killed rosanne off is basically she died of opioid.
She was addicted to pain pills or whatever, and that's how they killed her off.
That was a storyline that was going on in that first season of the rebooted Roseanne, and then it carried over into the Connors that she died due to opioids.
And apparently Dan is trying to fight the opioid companies to try to get money from them because they killed his wife that's the
basic gist of of at least the most recent stuff i don't know how long that's carried on um i don't
know if that's been in multiple seasons of this or if this is just the last season of it whatever
but um the whole premise of this is that dan is trying to fight big pharma, basically, to try to get money or try to get just revenge,
try to, you know, make amends for his wife's death,
which he believes was caused by the addiction
that they didn't tell her was possible by these pills.
So I watched the last episode of it.
And, like, the thing is, some of it's kind of funny,
but, like, out of spite, I won't like it
because I think that they did their compadre dirty.
Here's what annoyed me the most, because they had to try to find a way to work Roseanne into this
because they know that the people watching this show are only watching this fucking show because it was Roseanne at one point.
And they've stuck with it, not nearly as many people who watched it when it was Roseanne. But they stuck with it.
So they have to find a way to kind of tie it up and include Roseanne.
Because you cannot end this fucking show without Roseanne, who is the face of the show.
And I'm not, I mean, look, I'm going to guess that most of you, if you've watched the show, you already watched this.
And if you don't, you don't give a fuck.
But Dan goes out, fights Big Pharma, doesn't really win.
They give him a $700 check, basically,
and the show ends with all of them going out to Roseanne's grave,
which I think is bullshit because, again,
they're trying to find a way to kind of include Roseanne in this.
It's like, no, you can't make amends for this.
You dismissed this woman.
You ran her off.
You treated her like shit, and you didn't stand with her.
I'm not even saying that you don't go out and continue the show without her.
But you all kind of scoffed and just lived in this world where this person that you knew for 25, 30 years, now you're saying she's a piece of shit and you don't defend her.
That's bullshit.
I don't like that.
We use words like honor, code, loyalty.
You could have at least stepped up and said this
person was a decent person that made a mistake, but you went on, did her show without her, and
you all made money off of it. And now you're trying to tie it all up with a nice little bow
at the end of it and say, hey, this is our way of throwing Roseanne this kind of bone to say,
hey, Roseanne's in it. So they all walk up to her grave and each individually say something to it.
That's their way
of including Roseanne in the finale of this Dan says something at the end of it then they're all
sitting on the couch and I will say this the last moment of the show was nice because they're all on
the couch from Roseanne and like you could tell that they all started crying and it was kind of
an organic cry like this is the end of this show
and it's sad and it's kind of the end of Roseanne whereas the last episode of the first Roseanne
that never was the case now the Connors it's over it's the final ribbon the final bow put on the
Roseanne arc here and they're all kind of crying and then uh John Goodman after they all go he's
the last one on the couch and he just he he breaks the fourth wall, looks at the camera and just kind of smiles and you know, like a, like a sad kind of smile and
walks off. I don't know, man. I just like, I feel, and then here was the part that I really didn't
like, and maybe they, they're not allowed to do this. I don't know what the rules are. I don't
know if there's a lawsuit. I don't know know anytime they were showing clips of like a flashback type thing like in that last sequence there they showed like you know some
scenes from old roseanne episodes none of them featured roseanne the most important character
on the show one of the greatest characters in television history nowhere to be found even in
like a retrospective like like, oh, remember when
none of it has Roseanne in it. And it's bullshit. I didn't like that. I don't I again, I don't know
what kind of person Roseanne is. I don't know. I don't know what her mental issues are. I don't
know how full of shit she is. She said something stupid. She's been punished for the stupid things
she said. Cancel culture, whatever. She did something stupid. and that's that but to end that that way
almost feels like patronizing and bullshit and I don't like it it almost had like a it had kind of
an Archie Bunker's Place feel like there was a very Archie Bunker's Place vibe about it although
you know they killed off when they killed off edith i don't i don't know
if they if gene stapleton still wanted to be on the show or not but i know they killed her off
and like you had the whole story where where you've got um archie bunker sitting in the the
bedroom and he finds her slipper and like it's kind it's the same vibe you know the wife dies
guy's out on his own kind of has to try to make it on his own and all that.
I mean, look, it wasn't a bad last episode,
this Connor show.
And granted, I haven't watched six seasons of it.
I watched the one episode.
But if you've watched Roseanne,
you feel like you don't really need to know
about Darlene's new husband or Becky's new husband
or who Jackie's dating.
None of that matters
because this fucking show doesn't matter.
This show is obsolete.
It doesn't matter. It's is obsolete. It doesn't matter.
It's its own entity.
They've dismissed Roseanne, except to use her as a plot point and a prop in this episode.
But I don't know.
You feel like, I guess I don't like when I see people using someone who I know that they
didn't come to bat for when they could have.
Now, could that show have survived if John Goodman would have said, I'm not doing this
without Roseanne? Maybe. Would people have gotten over shit? Maybe. Did John Goodman do that?
Obviously not. So I don't know what would have changed, what would have been different
if the show would have survived or not not but they obviously didn't do that
they obviously left her out to dry and um and they did that in the name of keeping their show on the
air and again you know should you have to throw your whole life away and your livelihood away
because someone who was part of your uh livelihood you that, you know, that someone who was part of your life did that.
And,
and should you have to give up everything you've wanted and everything you've
earned?
It's a good question.
Probably not,
but to just leave someone that,
you know,
I,
what I hate is when there's people who know what your character is,
who don't step up and at least defend your character.
That doesn't mean don't defend your actions.
That doesn't mean like, you know, if you do something stupid, I'm not defending the action.
All I know is that the person I know is like this, particularly when we're talking about words,
because in 2025, words are the most violent things you can have. They're the biggest weapon
possible in your arsenal is words and tweets and everything
else. You know, I had a lot of people when I've done dumb shit who've never come to my defense,
who just like people who know who I am and what I'm about, but they just read what they read about
me on the internet and they go with that. And I get where that sucks. I understand it.
I see it was kind of bullshit way to end this show where you're suckling off the Roseanne teat one
more time as a way to kind of throw a bone and kind of bring a ribbon because you know you had
to if you in this show with nothing about Roseanne then you fucked up but you still left her out to
dry and didn't include any shots of or anything I thought was kind of bullshit anyway more to come
