The Josh Innes Show - Tony G's Russ Wilson Slander

Episode Date: September 26, 2025

I am not some Russ Wilson honk, but the hate this dude gets is pretty remarkable. The guys on the TNF Broadcast think the last few years have cost Rusty the HOF. How? Sure, he's sucked. But, do 3 ...bad seasons eliminate 10 great ones? That's dumb. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Starting point is 00:02:26 Speaking of Tony Gonzalez and Richard Sherman dumping on Russ, and I'm not trying to be Russ's mouthpiece here. It's not like I'm some big dyed in the wool Russ Wilson fan, right? But to see these guys on TV shitting on this dude who's a nine-time pro bowler. Now, again, pro bowlers are what they are. It's not like it's all pro. It's pro bowlers. But I think he's been to nine or ten pro bowls, and he's got the 11th most wins all
Starting point is 00:02:49 time by a quarterback, and he's won a Super Bowl, should have won another one. and like people just love to bag on Russ Wilson. It is baffling how much hate this dude gets. And I get that he's a fucking dope. I get that he does dopey shit. And maybe behind the scenes he was a total fucking weasel in Seattle and that's why they all hate him. But whether he was a total weasel or not, doesn't mean the guy shouldn't be a Hall of Famer. And if we're going to sit here and suck off Eli, like Eli Manning's the one that I look at, right?
Starting point is 00:03:17 Like if you look at the whole list of guys who are still like candidates for the Hall of Fame and you wanted to break down each of them and say, is he a Hall of Famer? Is he not a Hall of Famer? Eli Manning's the one that annoys the shit out of me. Because Eli Manning with the numbers he put up, and I guess two Super Bowls gets you into the Hall of Fame no matter what, no matter how you won them. Nobody dismisses Eli Manning's Super Bowls because they were miracles. But like somehow Russ Wilson, everything he does is dismissed because he happened to play with Seattle. And Seattle's defense is very good. And this is not like a situation like we're seeing now with Jalen Hertz where he's clearly being carried by the defense because he's incapable.
Starting point is 00:03:51 of throwing the ball to anybody unless they're down 20. Russ Wilson could sling it. And the fact that this guy continues to get shit on for whatever reason. Now, you know, he's played at a couple different teams. He's got benched a couple of times. And now it's well, he's gotten benched a couple times. So it's clearly not a Hall of Fame. Maybe he's just fucking cooked.
Starting point is 00:04:09 You know, it's certainly possible that some dudes who've gone to, like, Warren Moon went to the Hall of Fame. Warren Moon, like, toiled around for like five or six years after his prime. Ended with the, I guess his last good run was with, who am I thinking of it? Not Seattle. Maybe the Minnesota. Who was the last good run that Warren Moon had? But then Warren Moon just hung out as a backup. So Warren Moon is a Hall of Famer. Warren Moon never won a Super Bowl, never sniffed a Super Bowl, won a lot of football in Canada. Warren Moon became a
Starting point is 00:04:38 hall of famer. Okay, let's use Warren Moon as an example. First of all, let's play a couple commercials and we'll continue. Starting point is 00:05:36 manager so let's use war and moon as the example though here warren moon never sniffed a super bowl warren moon spent like the last five six years of his career as a backup quarterback now i might be exaggerating that the number of years. But he finished his career as a backup quarterback, okay? Never won a Super Bowl, never won an MVP, never came close to a Super Bowl, and spent a large portion of the back end of his career, played just a long-ass time, and spent a long-ass time as a backup quarterback. The number of years, let's see here. He spent like three years, like the last run he had where he started a decent number of games. He started 10 games in 1998. He started eight games in
Starting point is 00:06:20 1996 with Minnesota. So the guy was a backup quarterback at the end of his career. Last two seasons as a backup. So why are you not playing yourself out of the Hall of Fame when you're a backup quarterback for two years, yet bouncing around from a couple of teams and getting bounced and benched for Jackson Dart, like that means you're not a Hall of Famer? I think that's bullshit. And then like, we look at the guys who are considered Hall of Famers and are not
Starting point is 00:06:46 considered Hall of Famers, like, oh, like Kurt Warner was just a no doubt Hall of Famer. Kurt Warner's success was a very short period of time, yet Kurt Warner's a no doubt Hall of Famer. Yet a guy like Russ Wilson is. Again, I'm not here to stump for Russ Wilson. I'm not going to tell you that Russ Wilson's the greatest football player ever. I don't even, like, I don't care for Russ Wilson either way.
Starting point is 00:07:09 Like, I dug that his comeback last year seemingly was pretty cool when he played for Pittsburgh and was good for a couple games after being left for dead. But then he sucked again, right? And yeah, shit sucked in Denver. It was a mess in Denver, and it was actually a disaster in Denver. And whether or not you think Russ Wilson is a Hall of Famer, these last four seasons should have nothing to do with that. It should be the, what, 10 seasons that he played in Seattle
Starting point is 00:07:35 and won 104 games as the quarterback of the Seahawks. Maybe that should be a bigger factor. And the 9, 10 Pro Bowls that he had with Seattle. Like, what, do we punish him because of the Legion of Boom? Like, it's so bizarre how much these guys seem to hate Wilson. Like, he is just a dude that these people despise. For whatever reason, they fucking hate this guy. Finished in the top five of offensive player of the year, like four or five times.
Starting point is 00:08:03 It was a second team all pro. Again, I look at his numbers, and then I go back to Eli. And Eli is considered a slam dunk Hall of Famer. And I hate to get into Hall of Fame talk. But everybody talks about Eli Manning, like it's a no doubt, no-brainer that Eli Manning is a Hall of Famer. Well, you compare the two of them, 117 wins for Eli Manning. You know how many Rusty Wilson has? Rusty Wilson has 121. Well, Eli threw for 57,000 yards. Russell Wilson has thrown for 46,000. So he's thrown for about 10,000 fewer yards than Eli Manning. Cool,
Starting point is 00:08:40 but how many games have each of them played? You look at the total number of games. Russ Wilson has played, let's see, a grand total of 200. two games he started. Do you know how many Eli Manning started? A lot more than two oh two. How about 32 more games he started? And you look at these Eli, the fact that Eli Manning is considered a no-brainer to so many people, and maybe Pro Bowls aren't the best gauge because it's a fan thing, whatever, all pros matter more. Eli Manning is a four-time pro-bowler and one-time top six offensive player of the year. that's it
Starting point is 00:09:20 but because he pulled off two Super Bowl miracles that needed two amazing immaculate catches to win two Super Bowls well Eli Manning's clearly a Hall of Famer it's bullshit I will fight to the death about Eli Manning as a Hall of Famer like well he's won two Super Bowls
Starting point is 00:09:40 well two ain't six it's two and I look at Russ Wilson and he didn't win two but he won two If they call any other play on the goal line, they win the second Super Bowl, and you're talking a totally different game about Russ Wilson. But because they called a stupid play and he threw the interception, we judge him for that. Guy's been to two Super Bowls. He's one, one.
Starting point is 00:10:02 He's like a 10-time pro bowler. He's been top three or four in the offensive player of the year like four or five times. So what the way it ended? Like who gives a shit about the way things ended for the dude? Here, news flash. 99% of dudes who are all-time great players, it usually ends poorly. Even the non-great, the great shit just ends poorly. That's the way it works.
Starting point is 00:10:27 Very few people ride out on top, especially in the old days. Now these guys can play until they're 41, 42 years old. Like Drew Breeze is going to be a first ballot hall of favor. Drew Breeze, while they ended his career playing in an empty Superdome losing the playoff game, Drew Breeze was still playing at a pretty high level despite the fact his arm was kind of dead. He still played at a high enough level to be the quarterback for a team that won like 12 games that year, 13 games. I forgot how many games they won that year. It might have been 11.
Starting point is 00:10:54 But he was the quarterback of a team that won a lot of games in that last season. Like, guys are playing longer than they ever did. That's why Tom Brady can go out statistically on top. That's why Peyton Manning, even though he had the neck injury and theory went out statistically on top. His was just injury altered. But back in the day, dudes would hang on until like the third. the wheels fell off. So, yeah, Russ Wilson's had a shitty run here.
Starting point is 00:11:21 But the idea that the last three seasons of his career determined or have an important significance on whether or not the guy's a Hall of Famer is just fucking hating. And Richard Sherman clearly does not like Russell Wilson. And I don't know what Tony Gonzalez be as. Like, I'd like to see what Tony Gonzalez numbers were when he was hanging out in Atlanta.
Starting point is 00:11:42 Like, I'm going to guarantee you that Tony Gonzalez numbers and you can hide your numbers if you're tied in better than if you're a quarterback. All eyes are on the quarterback. All eyes are not on Tony Gonzalez, you know, 40 years old or however old he was when he ended his career with Atlanta. Like he had a nice career. Again, last couple of years of his career, 800 yards receiving, 900 yards receiving. The guy had a nice career and a nice into his career.
Starting point is 00:12:06 In fact, he was a four-time pro bowler. And he actually, wait, in 2012, what award was this? He was an all-pro. I take back what I said. Good for you, Tony Gonzalez. You still kicked ass. You rule. My bad.
Starting point is 00:12:22 I did not mean to besmirch you. Tony Gonzalez, his five years in Atlanta were fucking sick. Four of them were Pro Bowl years. And he was an all pro. So I retract the statement about you sucking at the end of your career. That said, the idea that Russ Wilson having a couple of bad years at the most difficult position the planet will alter whether or not he's a Hall of Fame or I think is stupid. And to me, it comes across as Haiti.
Starting point is 00:12:49 I don't know why Tony Gonzalez would have to hate Russell Wilson. I know why Richard Sherman would. Let's see what the actual quote was. As soon as he left there, he went to Denver, signed that big deal. They paid him $39 million to leave. He goes to Pittsburgh, plays there one year. He's out of there. Now he goes to New York and he has three games.
Starting point is 00:13:10 I just don't know if it's going to get any better. and I don't want to see him on a sideline holding the clipboard. I just don't think he's done himself any favor since he left Seattle. And how is it going to get better? I don't know. But it doesn't matter what he's done. Wasn't Kurt Warner a backup at one point at the end of his career? And then I think, how did things end up with Kurt Warner?
Starting point is 00:13:32 Like at one point, Kurt Warner, I think, was holding a clipboard. Things were not going well for him at one point in, what, New York before he ended up in Arizona and made that one last good run with Arizona? So, point being in all of this, and I'm not some sort of Russ Wilson fanboy. I'm not standing for Russ Wilson. It's just, there's this weird hate that this guy gets. And I don't know why. I think, I mean, we have ideas of why.
Starting point is 00:14:02 But the idea that a couple of bad years at the end of his career in some of these places indicate that he's not a Hall of Famer, he still had to put up those numbers and win the games. I don't care how good your defense is in Seattle, and they had good defenses. You want to tell me he wasn't a huge part of why they won? You want to tell me that those defenses would have gone to two Super Bowls if they would have thrown some dip shit in there? I don't believe that. There are very few instances where that happens. It happens with the 2000 Baltimore Ravens.
Starting point is 00:14:30 It happens with, you know, you could throw Brad Johnson, who was fine, but Brad Johnson with Tampa. Jalen Hertz with the Eagles, like dudes who are not like really all world, world beating quarterbacks that wins. Super Bowls because teams are just really good at something else, usually defense. But Russ Wilson, the dude's a 10-time pro bowler. The dude was one of the best quarterbacks in the game for a decade. But he has a couple of shit years and it ends poorly and that's the last kind of image you have of Russ Wilson. And now all of a sudden the guy is not a Hall of Famer.
Starting point is 00:15:03 What if he's just fucking cooked? So because he wasn't good until he was 45 like Tom Brady, like he sucks. he's no good he's not like Tony Gonzalez who put up great numbers until he was how old was Tony 37 like some dudes just fall off a cliff Russ Wilson fell off a cliff now if your argument is well Hall of Famers don't fall off a cliffs I'm sure they do I'm sure there are guys who are not the same dude at 36 as they were when they were 26 but somehow we're punishing Russ Wilson like he's some sort of piece of shit like again not a stand have nothing for or again Russ Wilson. I enjoyed watching him have kind of a bounce back last year for a couple of games in
Starting point is 00:15:46 Pittsburgh. You know, I enjoyed it. Like, think about this. Like, just talking about how weird the world is and how it's just strange things are, man. Two weeks ago, Russ Wilson throws for 450 yards. Two weeks ago, he throws a ball as well as you're ever going to throw a ball for a touchdown to take the lead against the Cowboys. 50 yard touchdown. Malik Neighbors, boom, touchdown. If they hold that lead, that's a win. And I think we're thinking things totally differently. But then you go to the next game. You're playing at home against the Chiefs.
Starting point is 00:16:15 You look like shit. You're benched Jackson Darts in. And it's all she wrote. But again, we talk about what ifs all the time. You know that what ifs are one of my favorite topics. What if? What if they just hold on to the lead there? What if they beat the Cowboys?
Starting point is 00:16:28 How does the world change? Maybe he still plays like shit against the Chiefs and gets benched. I don't know. But it doesn't change the fact the dude went out there and threw for $4.50 and they should have beaten the Cowboys. And he was a huge reason why they should have beaten the Cowboys. Cowboys. So anyway, more to come.
