Starting point is 00:00:00 It's getting more and more insane. I woke up today, as I'm sure you did, to the news that Donald Trump said why he wants to invade Greenland. It's not because he thinks it's going to help us strategically. It's not for security concerns. It's not because he's worried about Russia and China. No, Donald Trump, and I cannot believe, I cannot believe this is true. Donald Trump wants to invade Greenland because Norway never gave him his Nobel Peace Prize. I swear to God, this is where we are. I'm going to read this in full because I think it's important. Dear Jonas, considering your country decided country spelled the capital C, it's actually more insane to see a Donald Trump truth so-so post on White House letterhead. Anyways, considering your country with the capital C, decided not to give me the Nobel Peace Prize for having stopped eight wars. Plus, I no longer feel an obligation to think purely of peace, although it will always be predominant, but can now think about what is good and proper for the United States of America.
Starting point is 00:00:55 Denmark cannot protect that land from Russia or China. and why do they have a right of ownership anyway? There are no written documents. It's only that a boat landed there hundreds of years ago. But we had boats landing there also. I have done more for NATO than any other person since its founding. And now NATO should do something for the United States. The world with the capital W is not secure unless we have complete and total control of Greenland.
Starting point is 00:01:19 Thank you, President Donald J. Trump. Well, markets reacted to this insanity the way you would expect, which is with pure panic. because we have an insane person making insane pronouncements. I do not doubt that there is going to be some form of military presence from the United States in Greenland. I don't doubt it. Now, Ann Applebaum consider this with a seriousness it deserves. Now, this is insane and the insanity is hilarity because it is just so out of the box. But this is very serious what's happening. She said here, think about where this is heading. One possibility I anticipated this morning, as I showed you with financial markets, is a damaging trade war. Another is an American military
Starting point is 00:02:00 occupation of Greenland. Try to imagine it. The U.S. Marines arrive and nuke, the island's capital. Perhaps they kill some Danes. Perhaps some American soldiers die. And then what? If the invaders were Russians, they would arrest all the politicians, put gangsters in charge, shoot people on the street for speaking Danish, change school curricula, and carry out a fake referendum to rubber stamp the conquest. Is that the American plan too? If not, then what is it? This would not be the occupation of Iraq, which was difficult enough. U.S. troops would need to force Greenlanders citizens of a treaty ally to become Americans against their will. I guess that is like the big overarching question is what is the solution here? What are they proposing? What does it mean to take over Greenland?
Starting point is 00:02:39 They have said that they're going to try to buy it, but they're not for sale. So then what's next? If someone's not going to sell you something, there's only one other option. That is to rob them. Now, Denmark, in response to all this, has dispatched additional troops to Greenland on Monday today, and President Trump declined to rule out using force to seize control of the vast Arctic Island. The Danish defense forces said that a plane with a, quote, substantial contribution of soldiers and the head of the country's army would land in Kangaloswak in the west of the autonomous territory. And that is added to the fact that European nations have sent additional troops to Greenland as these threats. have happened. This is four days ago. These are our allies. European NATO countries are deploying
Starting point is 00:03:23 small numbers of military personnel to Greenland to participate in joint exercises with Denmark as Donald Trump ramps up his threats to forcibly annex the Arctic Island. Those countries are Germany, Sweden, France, Norway, the Netherlands, and Finland have all since confirmed their sending military personnel. Canada and France have also said that they planned to open consulence in nuke Greenland's capital in the coming weeks. in response to this, Donald Trump has said that he's going to give a 10% tariff on each European nation that has a military presence in Greenland and it's going up to 25% if they stay until June. Now, that means that European goods, along with everything else, is about to get more expensive.
Starting point is 00:04:07 This is just a few of the things that we can expect to pay more of. Vehicles, medicines and vaccines, ladies and gentlemen, Botox comes from European nations, medicines for consumer retail auto parts gas turbines and parts perfumes from France passenger vehicles in the UK aircraft parts in the UK lots of medicine and vaccines
Starting point is 00:04:32 semiconductor manufacturing refined oil products gas turbines and parts from Sweden so stuff that you need to live your life going to get more expensive why because Donald Trump is a big baby. He didn't get the thing he wants, and so he's throwing a temper tantrum. That's why. Now, we actually have reporting on this. Now, I think this is actually misreported. I'm going to
Starting point is 00:04:58 allege something right now. But we heard about this early last week where the army is putting 1,500 Alaska soldiers on standby for possible Minnesota deployment. This is an Alaskan news source here. The Pentagon has ordered about 1,500 active duty soldiers to be ready in case of a possible deployment. to Minnesota, where federal authorities had been conducting a massive immigration enforcement operation to defense officials said Sunday, the official spoke on anonymity. One defense official said the troops are in standby to deploy to Minnesota should President Donald Trump invoke the Interaction Act, a rarely used 19th century law that would allow him to employ active duties as law enforcement. Now, I actually don't think that's what's happening here. I think what is going on
Starting point is 00:05:42 is Donald Trump is actually waking up our military in Alaska for possible deployment in Greenland. It doesn't make sense to me that these active duty soldiers all the way in Alaska would be the ones that fly to Minnesota. I suppose that could be what happens. It makes much more sense to me that these active duty soldiers in Alaska would be getting prepared to be deployed in Greenland. Now, if this were to happen too, I've got to imagine that we have to, like, what does the military do? I feel like this would be in a legal order, right? Like, I don't know a world in which the military should have boots on the ground in Greenland because Donald Trump suddenly thinks that we need to own it.
Starting point is 00:06:22 It's insane to me. There's also no need for this because a 1951 defense agreement grants the U.S. military access to Greenland and Danish politicians have repeatedly expressed willingness to work with Washington to expand the American and NATO presence there. But that's not what Donald Trump wants. Donald Trump wants a prize. He wants the biggest island in the world. And it seems like he's going to do anything if it means even crashing the stock market, making things more expensive or damaging our relationships with our allies to get it.
Starting point is 00:06:51 But Greenlanders are not on board. I think he has lost his mind. I hope that there soon will be some clever, more clever people in the states who will tell him, no, no, no, it's not going to work this thing. You have to retire in some way or another and then to make it successfully for you too. but I think he has lost his mind a month ago. It's a bit like a spoiled child turned old. And you think he can. And he can scare people.
Starting point is 00:07:21 He can't scare Greenlanders. We're not scared. We'll fight him to the end. We'll never give in. I love that. And he's right. Ann Applebaum says here that the people around Trump could find ways to stop him and some did in his first term.
Starting point is 00:07:35 But today they're too corrupt or too power hungry to try. Now, that leaves us to Republicans. Republicans in Congress as a last barrier, and I don't know about you, but I don't trust Republicans to do the right thing ever, ever, ever. So this is a chaotic situation. I do believe that this is not the end. This is the beginning. And it is the clear sign that we are in a completely new era of world politics and American politics. And I think the only hope for us is that Donald Trump is a very, very, very, very unpleasured.
Starting point is 00:08:10 popular figure not only around the world, you're here at home. And hopefully, that means he won't have the political capital to do this. He might have the power. But if you don't have the support of the people, you can't get away with too much for too long.
