Starting point is 00:01:00 All right. This one, this one is just me raging. I'm just going to rage for about an hour. Are you ready? Mayor Mondani had the audacity to meet with Trump and it has caused a shitstorm on the internet. Mr. President, Mr. Mayor, there aren't too many Democrats who would roll out the red carpet for Donald Trump. You did that today. What tangible results achievements could you point to from your relationship with the president? You know, one of the focuses of the conversation the president and I have been having is about the possibility of building more housing here in New York City. We've spoken about Sunnyside Yard. And it's a real pleasure that just today we've agreed to set up a new level of that conversation between our housing and operations team at City Hall and the White House team. Because what we're speaking about is 12,000 homes, 30,000 jobs, the prospect of an entire new neighborhood.
Starting point is 00:01:59 in a city where housing is the number one costs. And I appreciate the president his interest in this. And we also know the president, not just as the leader of the country, but also as someone who has built quite a lot of housing here in our city. I don't know, Mr. President, you want to add anything? Well, I can tell you that Sunnyside's a big job. I've been watching that for 35 years. Everybody's wanted to do something with Sunnyside Yards.
Starting point is 00:02:22 Well, we met at the White House a couple of times, but we met at the White House. The mayor brought that up, the possibility of doing Sunnyside Yards. It's a very, I would say that was a very federal-oriented job. You're going to need a lot of federal approvals and probably some federal money to do it. But it's always been a great location. I owned a building in Sunnyside Yards. It was a great building.
Starting point is 00:02:44 I know it very well. So when he mentioned Sunnyside Yards, they've been talking about developing that for 50 years. So maybe they have a shot at doing it. Mom, Donnie and Trump. All right. This caused a whole shit. storm on the internet. Now, I don't know if you all aware of this. I don't know if you're aware of this. Centress got mad at Mom Dani for having a meeting with Trump in New York at Gracie Mansion.
Starting point is 00:03:08 They met for about an hour. And then they had it, what it was an imprompt to press conference afterwards. Trump wasn't scheduled to do it. Moundani invited him and Trump said yes. Okay. But this meeting was public. I mean, we knew about it. It happened in private. And then They had a press conference afterwards, and folks got very, very, very mad. Here's just some examples. Former DNC chair, Jamie Harrison, I'm just going to sit here and clock all the outrage. Sanders can appear in an event with Bannon.
Starting point is 00:03:43 Mom Dani invites Trump to Great Sea Mansion, but Jeffreys meets with Kushner and folks lose their minds. Guess he forgot to ask for permission. I am perplexed by the idea of these two. doing a press conference together because I've been told appearing with Liz Cheney who fought Trump is the work of the devil. Okay. All right. And then Sarah Longwell. It's not like Trump is just a regular old president. I get that everyone is invested in Mom Dani being perfect, but that press conference was pretty gross. Liz Cheney made it her life's mission to ensure that Trump wasn't
Starting point is 00:04:21 normalized. She went down swinging. All right. I have a question for the class. Does everyone understand understand the difference between Jeffries having a private meeting with Jared Kushner that was leaked to the press. We might not have even heard about it versus Mom Donnie meeting with Trump, mom donnie, the mayor of New York City, Trump, the president of the United States. Does everyone understand the difference? Someone articulated for me in the chat because I do feel like on some level, people are being intentionally dense as a means to protect Jeffries from what was a really stupid
Starting point is 00:05:00 decision in my opinion. Does Mamdani have to meet with Trump? No. Does Mom Doni have to have a relationship with Trump? Absolutely not. Mom Donnie, though, was elected to help make the city better. Trump as President of the United States has vast powers, one of which we've seen, which he can send ice wherever he wants, and terrorize communities. We've saw that firsthand. Two people are dead because of Donald Trump's negligence around and his heavy-handedness with ice in Minneapolis.
Starting point is 00:05:43 And, of course, Donald Trump has. a lot of discretion, as you heard in that clip, over federal funding, whether some projects are approved, whether they are slow-rolled, or whether they don't happen at all. So it's in Mamdani's best interest for his city to try to work with Trump. Now, what none of us could have anticipated was that they would actually have, they would get along. No one thought this. No one thought this would happen. It was actually very unexpected. It's, I think, honestly, a benefit for everyone that they're getting along, but they are getting along. But to say, I'm perplexed by the idea of these two doing a press conference together is like, do you all know who near Tandon
Starting point is 00:06:37 is? Do you know who this is? I don't, I don't even, I don't even know how to explain this. She's just like a career establishment figure in the party. She's worked in everywhere from Bill Clinton to Biden. Okay. And she's always on the wrong side of everything. And she's, but she's a very, she's very smart. Okay. It's a smart lady. She graduated from Yale. So I'm not understanding how someone who graduated from Yale doesn't understand why the mayor of the largest city in New York would take the opportunity to meet with the president. And I guess it's like, is she suggesting that Mayor Mamdani should sacrifice the well-being of nine million people to score a political point?
Starting point is 00:07:30 Sarah Longwell and your tenant don't understand the difference between Harris, Liz Janik, campaigning and Mom Doni meeting with Trump because Mamdani is. Momdani is being politically smart. Campaining with Liz Cheney was a symptom of Harris's terminal campaign decision to move right, fomented by Tandin-Longwell. Comparatively, Momdani has the President of the United States, the man who could wreck his morality on bend and knee. The Harris-Cheney collab was morally repugnant and politically stupid.
Starting point is 00:07:58 I don't know if it was politically stupid. I really don't think it, I mean, it wasn't, it helped, she didn't win. But I don't think it was stupid. I just think that, like, yes, and they should have done more of it. They should have done that and just tried it to expand the coalition. Like, again, what do they concede to the left? I don't know. I don't think a lot.
Starting point is 00:08:17 However, Mom Dani meeting with Trump is effective and has few moral tradeoffs. This is true. As Trump is doing what Mom Dani wants, they fail to grasp the dynamic for the reason. The same reason a JV coach can't understand NFL play calling. They're wildly out of their league. I don't know if they're wildly. I mean, listen, these are smart women. I think they're actually just being intentionally, it feels like they're either being intentionally
Starting point is 00:08:43 or they just have a blind spot because they just don't want to see Mom Donnie succeed. One of the two. This is my favorite reply. Sarah Longwell and you genuinely do not see any difference between campaigning governing. To them, both are all just theatrics. That's the only way to make sense of them expressing confusion at something that quite obviously isn't confusing. It's not confusing.
Starting point is 00:09:05 I mean, I guess, yeah, that's... Thank you, Ryan Grimm. Yeah, being diplomatic, while acting like an adult as more of what our country needs, it's supposed to be the United States not divided. Listen, I think Trump is a piece of shit, fucking fascist, authoritarian,
Starting point is 00:09:19 dementia, riddled, fat piece of shit, okay? I can't stand that motherfucker. I hate what he's done this country. I hate that he's been around in our lives for more than 10 years. But if you're the leader of the nation's largest city,
Starting point is 00:09:39 what good does it do for you to be like, fuck Trump? It does nobody any good. And someone made this point that is it helping Trump or is it hurting Republicans that their whole election strategy in the midterms
Starting point is 00:09:58 is radical Islam, is taking over the country, and by the way, they want to make every, thing communism. And then you got Trump, buddy, buddy with the first Muslim mayor of New York City, who by the way is a member of the DSA. So who is it really fucking up? I don't think it's like what has he conceded, Mom Donnie. And it seems like Trump is giving him a lot. And he's fucking up their midterm strategy. Someone wrote this. While to watch Trump undercut the GOP's entire anti-socialist
Starting point is 00:10:34 messaging during a crucial midterm election season because he can't bring himself to stop paling around with Mom Dani. So like, I think that's the message is that Mom Dani's fucking up the Republic. He's not, this is not hurting us at all.
Starting point is 00:10:50 At all. All right. Adam Carlson, who I think is very smart. I honestly don't understand the Liz Cheney who voted with Trump 93% of the time. Let's we forget comparison. People in the center keep making here. She campaigned with Kamala. It wasn't just a joint press conference.
Starting point is 00:11:07 If Mamdani campaigned with Trump, I'd be super angry. Yeah, I agree. Like, if Mom Donnie, like, if Mom Donny in the general election was campaigning with Trump to try to get votes, I think that would be a different thing than just having a meeting on the behalf of his constituents. Shortly before we sat down, you were meeting with the president and you had a press availability, and so we were able to see you and monitor closely. It looks like the president is on his best behavior when he's around.
Starting point is 00:11:34 you. He is dignified, polite, speaks gently and of substance. It seems like he quite likes you. It's quite a rare thing for a leader to have that kind of encounter with his president. So I just want to know whether you have a trick, whether you have a sort of a way of dealing with him. What do you talk about of substance behind closed doors? Well, I think of the many differences of opinion the president and I have, we have one thing that brings us together, which is the love of New York City. And we are both New Yorkers. And what I focus on in those conversations with the president is how we can make life better for the people who call the city their home. And so today, when we sat down for that meeting at Gracie Mansion, there were a number of things that I wanted to bring up to the president.
Starting point is 00:12:26 We spoke about Sunnyside Yard, the potential for building 12,000 new homes. in a city where a lack of housing is the number one driver of the cost of living crisis. We spoke, as you heard the president say, about the importance of providing stability to Haitian New Yorkers. And as the president said, I feel very strongly about this. I brought this up, and I did so because Haitian New Yorkers
Starting point is 00:12:48 are every bit apart of this city as myself and those who work in City Hall, and that I've heard about this not just from them, but also from developers, from hospital executives, from leaders of the industry that power our city's economy about their concern about the lack of stability in their lives. For many on the outside, it looks like a brutal policy from the White House, the deportations, the hounding of anybody who looks a different color,
Starting point is 00:13:16 whether they happen to have their papers or not. And I wonder, how does he engage on that particular human issue when you as the mayor of the city, which is so diverse, talk to him about it? Well, what I appreciate is that in that conversation, the president not only heard me, but is clearly considering what it is that I said. And it's of immense importance to the city at large. And that's why it is something that I've spoken to the president about over the phone. I've spoken to him about in person as we did today. And whether it is TPS for Haitian New Yorkers or it is Sunnyside Yard, the conversation always comes back to what are the things New Yorkers need.
Starting point is 00:13:55 And as I said over the course of the campaign, and even while I've been in office as the men, mayor that I'm willing to speak to anyone and everyone who has the ability to deliver for New Yorkers. And we know that President Trump has that ability also has that interest. Yeah, there you go. This is about New Yorkers. One reporter asked, do you think you should be criticized for meeting with Trump? I said this in my opening remarks that I committed over the course of the campaign as well as well being in office that I would meet with anyone, work with anyone that could deliver for New Yorkers. and in the previous meetings I've had with President Trump,
Starting point is 00:14:29 we've been able to secure the release of a New York City college student who had been detained by ICE. Yes, yes. Let's just repeat that one more time. People are like, what's the point of this? Well, literally he like got someone released who was detained by ICE as just one, for instance. Let's secure the release of a New York City college student who had been detained by ICE. We've been able to move forward what has been a longstanding dream. about the construction of Sunnyside Yard.
Starting point is 00:14:57 And we know we have a significant way to go, but these meetings do truly assist in that path. And to me, the question always is, how can we deliver for the city? How can we deliver for the people of this city? And so having a conversation about potentially building 12,000 homes, about the importance of our Haitian neighbors here in this city, those are conversations that are worthwhile to have.
Starting point is 00:15:20 And to the first question, this was part of a conversation I was having with the president, I invited the president to come to Gracie Mansion. And he had also remarked to me in prior conversations about how many memories he has of this as a home for prior mayors. And I thought it would be a good location for a continuation of the conversation. Yeah. Again, as we said here, released the person from ICE. And also, Mom Donnie and Trump are advancing a plan for a new neighborhood above Sunnyside Yard in Queens.
Starting point is 00:15:54 as Trump said, like that is going to be something that needs federal funding. So listen, I just don't, I guess like, I just don't understand the knee-jerk reaction to like whenever this happened. This has been a constant theme. It's like the only thing they can ding him on is that he tries to have a relationship with Trump. And I just like, like, I just don't, I just don't understand this, this knee-jerk reaction to attack him for doing something that it feels like no other Democrat has been able to
Starting point is 00:16:24 successfully do, which is to have some sort of relationship with Trump, be able to get something out of it, and also not give anything up. He's not making any concessions. Okay? So we should, we should want more of this. We should want more Democrats outsmarting Trump getting shit from him and not having to do anything for it. Isn't that the ideal? So spare me on all the centrist bullshit of people getting upset. An unexpected moment. Trump and Mandani is raising eyebrows. A lip reader interpreted Trump's words to Mamdani.
Starting point is 00:17:01 Lip reader exposed it all. Welcome back yesterday in New York, a meeting of the minds between MAGA and socialism. According to a lip reader, it wasn't a good vibe, even when the mics weren't on. The president seemingly telling Mom Donnie, I'll look after you. You look after the New Yorkers, and we can both make it work.
Starting point is 00:17:22 I want to support you. Help me come with me to the White House. See how I work. As the two get closer, it's starting to look like, so too are the ideologies that are Rep. Interesting. I wonder what that means, though. Like how do you, how does one, oh, I don't like that.
Starting point is 00:17:38 How does, listen, this is the problem. Like this, I don't think I'd be a, I don't think I'd be good at this. I don't think I'd be good at this. Help me. Ooh, that's scary. to the White House, see how I work. As the two get closer, it's starting to look like, so too are the ideologies that are represented. We showed you this yesterday.
Starting point is 00:18:01 A Wall Street journal piece revealing some young folks on the right are considering socialism as a shortcut to the American dream. Look at the stats inside this op-ed at the Wall Street Journal. All right, well, who cares? Yeah, all right. Well, sorry. Well, capitalism needs a little bit more. needs a little bit of undermining. All right, interesting.
