The Keith Edwards Show - Morning Joe Tries Newsom… It Doesn't End Well

Keith Edwards discusses how Morning Joe host Joe Scarborough slammed Governor Gavin Newsom’s recent online behavior, calling it “quite embarrassing” and urging him to focus on affordability issues like housing and energy rather than mimicking Trumpistic tactics.

I actually haven't watched Morning Joe since they went to Mara Lago after Donald Trump won and bent the knee. I haven't watched. Have you watched? I haven't watched. Now, they're back in the news, so I'm going to bring you this clip, but they're back in the news for what I consider to be the wrong reasons, because the one person who is fighting and actually getting attention in this broken attention economy is Gavin Newsom. and morning Joe, Joe Scarborough, Scarborough thinks what he's doing is wrong. Here's that. The Democrats are trying to find their footing, and it's quite embarrassing, actually. I mean, Gavin Newsome.

I mean, have you seen what he's doing online and say, just take a deep breath? Don't try to turn the ship 180 degrees. And they don't know what to do. I have a good idea. Instead of trying to make school Donald Trump, talk into the camera about affordability. Talk about making groceries, like more affordable. Talk about what you're going to do for a house.

What you're going to do for energy prices that continue to go up. We heard the congressman yesterday talk about energy prices skyrocketing in New Jersey. You know, don't try. Yeah. As I've been saying, Donald Trump's not on the ballot in 26. He's not on the ballot in 28. Why try to drag Muhammad Ali in the ring when you got Chuck Wepner standing right in front of you? And a weapon, Webner's a bleeder.

He's a bleeder. You want him. So why are you going, I'm going after Donald? No, you're not running against Donald Trump. Go after Tweedledee or Tweedledum. You know, Chuck Webner, a plea to go after him. Well, I have to say that, first off, I think that's totally wrong. I think Joe doesn't understand.

I mean, clearly he doesn't understand. He still has a talk show on MSNBC, which is soon going to be MS now, Miss Now. Is there a Mr. Now? And the fact of the matter is what Gavin Newsom is doing is, is building a coalition, an army. And so you have to do what is required to get attention in today's media environment.

And it's working. It's working. Unlike Morning Joe, who's seen its ratings collapse since he bent the knee to Trump, Newsom, who's attacking Trump, is seeing a huge increase in his support online. And we can measure that just by his following. Real quick, we have new merch.

Thanks. in TikTok and Instagram, as you can see here, he's more than doubled. He's following there. It was at 500,000 followers on TikTok. He now is 2 million as of August. The same with Instagram. It was at 1 million. It's now at 2,250,000. So it's working. And these are people who probably didn't know Gavin Newsom existed or didn't know much about him, who are now paying more attention to what he says. And that's power. He's building an army. He's building a weapon, a digital weapon. And he's going to eventually be able to fire it at someone else.

The same way that Donald Trump can push a tweet and it becomes news, Gavin Newsom's building something similar. And if he doesn't understand that, then quite frankly, I don't think he's really qualified to talk about the media environment we have going on right now in America. Because this is what it's going to take to get attention and to reach voters. The old way of doing things is out. Sorry. Now, this is Gavin Newsom's communications director responding to this said. And America is quite embarrassed by what Joe Scarborough is doing.

So they get the moment. They get it. And I'm glad. I hope more people start to do it. And Charlemagne the God actually gave Gavin Newsom his props. And here's a bit of that. Gavin Newsom for the past week and some change has been doing what I've wanted a Democrat to do for a long time. Okay, see Michelle Obama once said, when they go low, we go high. And your uncle Charlotte has never agreed with that. Okay, when they go low, either you ignore them and mind your business, stay doing the work, or when they go low, you go to hell. Okay, and Gavin Newsom over the last week and a half has been going to hell with the Trump administration. Not even really going to hell, just matching energy.

And I like it. Since Donald Trump returned. Yeah, it's just matching energy. And it's been really effective at having to make Republicans and pundits have to really look at the fact that if Gavin Newsom is behaving this way, which is really just a parody and satire of what Trump is doing for real, and if they don't like it, then why isn't it that Joe Scarborough, like, why is it that Joe is just focus on Gavin? I never hear Joe say anything about the way that Donald Trump. Trump tweets. It just become, everyone's just become used to it. Everyone's just accepted. That's how it is.

But because Gavin mirrors it, it's a problem. Actually, let's talk about the fact that Donald Trump being the leader of this country and acting when he does is the problem. And Gavin is just meeting fire with fire. And getting attention. Now, here's what Molly Zhang fast said about the way forward for Democrats. You know, breathing into a paper bag. I'm trying to calm down a little bit. But, you know, John just quoted a remarkable stat out of the New York Times that in the 30 states where they track voter registration over the past four years, Democrats have lost to Republicans in every single state. Why? So this is the $24 million question, right? Why are Democrats not, why are the polls bad? Why are they not breaking through? And I think it's a couple of things. I think one is the people who are breaking through are. brave, right? They talk like humans. They make the case, you know. And again, and it's like Pritzker's chief of staff told me, it's not necessarily left versus center. It's fight versus cave. And the people

who fight get support. And the people who cave or are mealy-mouthed or are, you know, very sort of corporatist-y, that crew, the crew that's afraid cannot break through, does not appeal the voter. The question is it's only going to be for people who really feel authentic. Right. Sherri has never been afraid of his shadow. Exactly. He's always spoken as mine. Chris Murphy, Sherry Brown, Mondami, these people, AOC, they're not all exactly the same politically,

but they are the same in the fact that they're brave and they break through. Yeah, I think we just want fighters right now. I think that's why this channel exists because it's a place for me to fight. It's a place for you to fight. It's a place for the truth to actually have space and for us to point out lies. And we do need our leaders to be doing the same thing because I do what I can, you do what we can, but we need people who have power, who have actual power, to be leading the fight. I always thought that would be Tim Cook or Jeff Bezos or Mark Zuckerberg or any of these

billionaires that have fuck you money. What's the point of having fuck you money if you don't say fuck you? The people actually saying, fuck you are people like you and me. And folks like Mom Dani and Chris Murphy and AOC and Bernie. It's just appalling to me that Joe Scarborough sees a fighter and says, hold on, hold on, hold on. Not like that, not like that. Actually, we're in the middle of a war. We're in the middle of a war.

It's not one waged with bullets and guns, but it's one that is still just as serious. We're in the fight for our life, for our democracy. One way to fight is by being louder and more aggressive than your opponents. I'm glad Gavin Newsom's doing, and I hope he continues. I hope he continues. Thank you for watching.
