No guests on today's show, just you and me, plenty to catch up on from Saturday's loss. Yes, it was a loss if you're counting to the Lions in Detroit. We'll do that here in the opening segment. Dan Quinn spoke today prior to a practice that changed a bit from Saturday. They were going to do a walk-through today because they do have the joint practice with the Ravens on Wednesday. They've got their final preseason game Friday night in Baltimore. Yesterday was supposed to be Quinn's Zoom press conference with the beat,

but he changed it to a live podium presser today prior to a more fully engaged practice out in Ashburn. Was that a result of he didn't like what he saw on Saturday? I think so. I'm going to play a few of his sound bites in the next segment. I thought they were somewhat telling. Real quickly before we get to football and stay with football on this show today. Three items to mention. One, congrats to the Mystics, they qualified for the WNBA playoffs for the first time in three years

with a 105 to 100 win yesterday against the fire. I think clinching the playoff berth also relied on another team losing. I can't remember who that team was, but they have qualified for the playoffs for the first time since 20. The Nats had a rough weekend. They've had a rough time, really all month long, swept by the Marlins in South Florida over the weekend. That makes the Nats now six and 18 since the trade deadline on August 3rd earlier this month. Whatever competitive part of the season was left, it's long gone now. They are 10 games under 500 currently, way out of the wild card. race, 10 and a half back of the third spot. They're actually trending towards finishing dead last in the division because the Mets have played better and the Nats now are just a game and a half in front of New York in the National League's basement avoidance race.

And remember the days in which the Nats led the major leagues in runs scored? Yeah, not anymore. The Cubs have passed them on that front. What an absolute disaster this month has been for a team that was through the end of July a pretty decent surprise story. That is going to be barely remembered when this season ends. And then I wanted to mention one other thing before we get to football and stick with football the rest of the way. Kids in D.C. were back in schools today. I would imagine kids all over the DMV, all over the country, for that matter, are back in school now.

I think I read last week a school system in Virginia opened up. That would have been on August 17th. That's three weeks before Labor Day. I mean, that almost seems like it's halfway through the summer. I shouldn't be surprised every August, but I always am to a certain degree because they just keep going back earlier and earlier, it seems to me. And for people my age, and many of you are certainly within the range of my age, we remember when schools didn't open up until the day after.

Labor Day. It's been a while since that's been the case, although I think a lot of private schools don't go back until after Labor Day, the old saying, you know, you pay more, they go less. But a lot of the public school systems are opened up. And D.C. kids went back to school today. And one of the schools in D.C. today opened on its first day of school as a newly expanded, newly renovated, and newly renamed High School. The school was formally known as MacArthur High School. It's located at 4530 MacArthur Boulevard Northwest. That's actually pretty close to my house.

The expansion was $91 million worth. The school serves up to 800 students in grades 9 through 12. And the school is no longer known as MacArthur High School. It's now known as John Thompson Jr. High School. They name this school after Coach Thompson. And today, I would imagine, by the way, it's not the first thing with his name on it, and it won't be the last.

But it is the first school in D.C. with Coach Thompson's name on it. Mayor Bowser was there with people from the D.C. public schools and other district leaders and officials from Georgetown University to cut the ribbon. on the new school. And she said, quote, I want to thank all the educators, administrators, school staff, station managers, and bus drivers, crossing guards, all the people who are working together to welcome our students to school and make the first day of school a great one. John R. Thompson Jr. High School is a beautiful space for our students and teachers. It represents the billions of dollars we have poured into our school facilities over the past

do decades, and we are so proud to honor coach Thompson here, close quote. Cool honor for, you know, one of the great leaders in college sports history, obviously also very much a trailblazer in many ways. And I think, you know, beyond the basketball court, he was an educator. He certainly, certainly thought like one and many. mentored like one. So a real honor for Coach Thompson, and I hope the kids know about the man that their high school is named after.

All right, let's get to some football. This from Zach, Zach writes, Kevin, even you can't ignore the difference between Jaden Daniels in 2024 and what he was last year, and so far this year. So far this year. He looks slower and confused. I'm not panicking yet, but this is a make or break year for him. Enough slurping him, Kev. Call it like it is.

Zach, I think you're on to something. I mean, I got to give you some credit for being able to come to the slower confused conclusion from the three plays he played in against the Lions in Detroit on Saturday. That's quite the talent to be able to nail it down from three. preseason snaps. Zach, are you nuts? I mean, seriously, get off the meds. This from K in Rockville, Kay writes, you downplayed it last week, but I would assume you can't avoid the topic this week. Stiles has been a big disappointment so far. K in Rockville, it actually would make sense to avoid the topic, but I can't because you're not alone in thinking this. I think we talked about this.

last week after the game against the dolphins, there are a lot of our fans that think Sunny Stiles is a big disappointment, if not a bust, after two preseason games. I got this from Leak. Leak wrote, enough of your belittling of the preseason. Stiles hasn't made one play, and worse than that, he looked lost, giving up the RPO touchdown to Dobbs.

All right. So first of all, leak, let me answer your tweet. It wasn't an RPO, by the way. It was a zone read or read option. Both of those are acceptable descriptions for the play. I've done this many times in the past. I'll do it again. The difference between an RPO and a read option or zone read is that the RPO is a run pass option, hence the acronym RPO. Run pass. option. Either the quarterback hands it to the running back for a run or passes it. The read option or zone read is a run, run option, not a run pass option, a run run option. The quarterback either hands it to the running back or he keeps it himself and runs it. So now, our teams starting to combine zone read, read option with RPO? Yes, yes, sometimes there is a run option with the running back, a run option for the quarterback, and a pass option. But that is the basic difference between the RPO and the read option. And by the way, Stiles leak was not the culprit on the Josh Dobbs touchdown run Saturday in Detroit.

Josh Joseph's was the culprit. He was the end that crashed down too hard. Dobbs read it, pulled it. Now, you'd like to think that they, you know, that reading it incorrectly, playing it incorrectly wouldn't lead to a 50-yard touchdown run by the quarterback, but Dobbs pulled it, saw it, saw Joseph's, you know, bite on the fake, and he was off to the races.

But that was not a Stiles error. That was a Joseph's error, just to make sure that you understand how that play went. And no, Sunny Stiles. has not been a big disappointment. Okay, Kay in Rockville. He's a rookie who's played sparingly in two preseason games. Preseason games leak should be belittled.

For the coaches and the players, yes, of course there's value. And there's information that's, you know, taken from these preseason games that they can use to, you know, with a lot of other information, to make decisions on a position battle or roster spots. 50 through 53. But for the players that are likely to make the team and play in real games, preseason snippets are not anywhere near conclusive. Remember a few weeks ago when I went through, I think, with Tommy, all the tweets that I found from last training camp in preseason,

you know, about how the defense was, you know, going to be, you know, the strength of the football team. The secondary was so improved. It might be one of the strongest, you know, units in the league. I remember reading Joe Witt Jr.'s found his sea legs, look out for him as a defensive coordinator in his second season. I mean, there was so much this time last summer about the defense, about the defense. The defense was the worst in my lifetime of watching this team. This secondary was abysmal. A lot of the other stuff was about Matt Gay being deadly.

from 50 and out, and literally among his first three attempts from 50 and out, he missed two of them. Sunny Stiles might end up being a disappointment or a bust, but it's not because of what you think you've seen, Leak and K, in a few series in two preseason games during his rookie campaign. It just isn't. You're not seeing something that should lead you to believe that he's going to be a bust. You're entitled to the opinion, but it's not based on anything real at this point. Let's at least let him play a few regular season games before you start to form an opinion. I will say this as a reminder, though, Ruben Bain Jr. would have been my pick at seven.

He would have been. I would have also taken Carnell Tate had he fallen to seven ahead of Stiles. I didn't necessarily think like some of you did that Downs would have been the better pick. I mean, I would have been fine with either one, but Ruben Bain Jr. would have been my pick at seven. I thought he was the best player on the board at seven. And I talked about, you know, Sunny Stiles and his, you know, freakish, legendary, you know, indie combine workout

that, yeah, he's a really good athlete, but no, he's not the most athletic linebacker that's ever going to play the game based on his indie combine numbers. It's not what you saw when he played at Ohio State. You didn't see the all-time freakish, super blurry, fast, you know, quick, Twitch linebacker. You saw a very athletic linebacker and a really good linebacker. I think he's going to be fine. I really do the run games in area to watch with him, I think, early on in his career.

Can he hold up against NFL offensive linemen when they reach that second level? But obviously, guys, you've got to stop on some of these, you know, sweeping preseason training camp conclusions. We got to wait for real games. And when it comes to super young players, you got to wait much more than just a few real games. All right, let me get to my takeaways from the game on Saturday. It was a hard watch.

I'll start with that, man. That was not easy to watch. It wasn't, you know, smooth. there weren't starters playing enough for our team. Again, three offensive snaps for the offensive starters for many of the defensive starters who were up and several of them were not. They only played two snaps before all the reserves started to come in. It made it a difficult watch. I said this earlier today, and I know I've said it before on the podcast. If I didn't have to watch these preseason NFL games, I would never watch one second of any of these preseason NFL games.

They are absolutely dreadful from a consumer standpoint. I do enjoy some of the crazy feedback that comes from preseason games, because I really feel it sets up for the contrarian in me when the regular season begins. I heard Dan Orlovsky, who I actually really like, say this morning, and I'm paraphrasing, he was talking about the Titans preseason game last night against Seattle, and he said, I'm just not seeing the chemistry, the connection, and there should be some concern about that with Cam Ward and Carnell Tate. I mean, seriously, the second preseason game for a rookie and for a second year quarterback,

and there's no chemistry yet? I mean, I don't know. It might be me. So the good, the bad, and the other. I'll start with the good from Saturday in Detroit. I thought the energy level, the urgency level, the aggressiveness was there. It should be there when the players who are primarily playing or playing for jobs, roster spots, and then even the opportunity to get called back to the practice squad.

Imagine what we would be saying if the team came out and was lackadaisical. Like that would be a real reflection on the coaching staff or the general manager for not picking the right players. But early on, they were aggressive, the corner blitz by Amick Robertson that caused the fumble that Joshua Joseph's ended up scoring on. Energy level was good. Jaden Bradley is on the good list. He was on the list last week. That big old 6 foot 4 inch wide receiver is, as Scott McLuhan might say, a football player. That was a hell of a catch from Aethan Calliak Manus, the quarterback in the game, who I'll mention here momentarily.

He nearly blocked two punts last week. This is going to be a hard position to cut down this year. It's not because there are a lot of great players, but there are players who can play and should be on NFL rosters, even as backups. And the last couple are going to be tough. You know, I've mentioned this all along. Like if they end up releasing Van Jefferson, it's going to kill him.

And I have a feeling if they end up, you know, releasing Jaden Bradley trying to bring them back to the practice, squad. There's going to be, you know, a lot of holding breath, hoping that he clears and they can bring him back to the practice squad. 41 John Baptiste, I thought, stood out. They like him. They liked him last year. He was hurt early in the season and lost for the year. Remember, they lost Wise Baptist, John Baptiste, and Dorrance Armstrong, their top three edge defenders and pass rushers. This guy can rush the passer. They've liked him since they drafted him in the seventh round in 2024. He was going to be a big part of their, you know, their rotation last

year and he got hurt. I think Tyler Owens, number 18, we've seen it in, you know, regular season games, especially on special teams. But man, he's just one athletic freak. I just like watching him play football. Kehoe, I like 51. And 77 Hurst had a decent game. He's been around for a while, you know, against threes, twos, fours, maybe. John Baptiste and Tyler Owens, though, in particular. I mean, Owens on special teams for sure, right? Even if he doesn't get into the rotation at safety. I think Will Harris might be in trouble at safety.

That's another one, by the way. If he gets released, Souter called that one last year. When the coaches were raving about the loss or how important it was that Will Harris was injured and not in the lineup and how much they were missing from that, Souter said, really? him? I think there's probably at this point a better chance of

Juan Martin making the team. Look, the two interceptions were kind of easy interceptions, but he's had a nose for that. And on a team that hasn't been very good in taking the ball away, I mean, keep some of the players, maybe the tiebreaker should be, this guy's got his eyes and hands around the football a little bit more than the other guy does.

Yeah, and as far as the, The backup quarterback, the third string quarterback, Callie Maness, the kid from Rutgers, who they drafted in the seventh round, he does look the part. He does look like he's got an NFL kind of dropback quarterback in the right kind of scheme ability as a backup in the NFL. But again, who's he playing against in these two games? He is not lined up against Quinnian Mitchell and Cooper DeGine and Jalen and Jalen Carter and Jordan Davis rushing him.

But I'm impressed with the way he throws the football, his decisiveness, his release, his accuracy, more so than I am with Sam Hartman's, who actually didn't play poorly. You know, those two quarterbacks were 20 of 25 on Saturday for 229 yards, no touchdowns, no picks, and just one sack. Hartman got sacked. Daniels got sacked, obviously, too, at the beach. beginning of the game. You know, that number 19, Nick Nash, he was a prolific college football player at San Jose

State, if you didn't know. He had 104 receptions last year as a senior for 1382 yards and 16 touchdowns. And he had a nice catch on a nice throw. That throw was from Sam Hartman, I believe. in the second half, right? I think that one was from Hartman. Anyway, yeah, I thought there were a couple of, you know, player evaluations that were positive. On the bad list, look, we got to start with just the number of snaps that the starters played. Three snaps on offense, two for the defensive starters that were active, several were not.

I just don't understand it. I said last week that I've kind of changed my mind. I flopped around. Waffled around last week and landed on a conclusion that I think I'll have for future pre-seasons. And that is either play them or don't play them. And if you're going to play them, that means playing them, you know, a solid quarter to maybe even a half. You know, 20 snaps. 20 plus snaps get you into the second quarter usually, depending on the game flow and, you know, how. And I'm talking about both sides of the ball. How is their value in Jaden Daniels and the offensive starter is going out there for three snaps,

two of which were negative, when you're 22 days away from the first game, more than three weeks away. You could play them against Baltimore, but I doubt they will because they've got the joint practice on Wednesday, and I bet he gets a bunch of work in that, but that's not the same as a preseason game because they can't touch them in the joint practice. When you decide, and Helly called this out early in the beginning of the game that Quinn essentially told them that the starters were going to play one series on both sides of the ball, no matter what the results are. You're going to be so inflexible as to not letting the starting offense go back out after that opening three snap drive. Look, I think there are three things that go into this decision from a team standpoint. I'm sure I'm missing some, but one is they honestly believe there's value in three snaps. Two is they were going to bring them back for a little bit more if the first one went very poorly,

but the immediate pressure on Jaden spooked him and they decided, no, that's enough. And then lastly, you do it just to keep people from saying you didn't play anybody in the preseason. I would hope it's not for PR reasons. I don't believe that it is. I just personally cannot wrap my arms around three snaps providing any sort of value for the regular season opener that is 22 days from the three snap performance against Detroit. That would be my number one kind of bad. I don't get it. Number two would be, look, the starting offensive line snap number one was, you know, your starting starting

center Saturday, not your projected starting center when the regular season begins. That's Nick Allegretti, as long as he's healthy. But Julian Good Jones gave up the immediate pressure on first down. John Bates, who's an excellent blocker, as we know, gave up the pressure on the second downplay that ended up in a sack. And the offensive line in three starters and three offensive snaps didn't look great. I mean, you know, is there panic without game planning for the opponent, without being able to say, look, we're going to have some issues with Julian Good Jones in the game or Matt Galvin in the game if Nick Allegretti can't play. But we can game plan around those weaknesses. They don't do that in the preseason. But yes, I think Quinn talked about being a bit concerned

about the center position. And I would certainly think that on Sunday, after 6 p.m., when all of the cuts are made, 90 down to 53, league-wide, that they will be looking. And you'll hear something that Dan Quinn said about that in the next segment. You know, they better be right about Allegretti. He better play and he better be every bit of what Tyler Beaudish was last year. I understand Beaudish wanted some money, didn't want to play, you know, he would have had to have played with all of the guaranteed money gone on the third. third year of his contract. I understand that the O-Line Room actually prefers Aligretti as a communicator

at the line of scrimmage at that center position, which I believe is true. But, you know, the calf is lingering. He's not going to get any snaps in a preseason game with Jaden. And the first time he snaps it to Jaden will be with Jalen Carter and Jordan Davis breathing down his neck. so they better be game planned up for that one. Matt Gulbin, Quinn said today was working at Guard last week, back at center this week, the sixth rounder from Michigan State. Julian Good Jones, let's face it, he's just a guy. He's a backup at best.

You can't expect, you know, that you're going to have a solid one through five offensive line if he's your center because Al Goretti gets hurt or can't do it. They're going to be scanning the waiver wire. You know, you can put a lot of blame on Adam Peters. It's too early to do that because they haven't played a real game yet. But what were the options after Tyler Linderbaum? Some of those other options, there were injury concerns. So they could have done something in the draft.

We had Cole Kublich on the show. Cole Kublich came on the show, SEC Network ESPN, and he said, Parker Brailsford, center, Alabama, the most underrated offensive linemen in the draft, and your team needs a center, you should draft him. They had a chance, but I understand they went with Josephs instead. They really liked Josephs. They could have drafted him, but they went with Josephs in the fifth round instead.

Let's hope that center isn't a disastrous, you know, position because that is the shortest route from defender to quarterback is the A-gap. All right. What else did I have here? Oh, the uniforms look so good, minus the logo on the helmet, but it looks like the old team. I love it. I think it was a really good call by everybody involved. All right, next segment. All right, so there were a couple of Dan Quinn quotes from today's presser before the practice that I wanted to play for you. that I thought were interesting. First of all, as it relates to the O-Lines performance on those three snaps,

Julian Good Jones replacing Nick Gallagretti, Quinn had expressed some concern about the center position after the game on Saturday, and then Nikki Javala from the athletic asked him about it again today. You said after the game, you felt like you had some work to do to kind of figure out what you guys want to be at center. Do you feel like you have the talent you need there on the roster currently? We do. But we still have work to do there, Nikki, honestly.

And so I want to see where Matt is, get him some more snaps. He played a little bit of guard this week. And we worked him some there in the game. I'm sure you saw that. And we'll work him back to exclusively, you know, at center into this game and this practice this week. We're still working with Nick. He's not there yet coming back from his injury. But between the three of them, you know, we're still.

in the process of evaluating, you know, what's the best way for us to go. So that'd be one of the spots that I'm still digging in on and still looking. There was even more on the center conversation. This was at the end of the press conference from David Aldrich. What do you need to see from both Julian and from Matt going forward to make you feel comfortable there? Yeah. Good news. I feel comfortable system-wise. And you know how important it is to direct every.

everything up front. This is the call. This is where we're going. So with both of them, I feel good knowledge of the system of where they're at. Julian is somebody that's like been here to work and put in. So I felt his strength there. I want to see really good protection in the middle of the line, especially blitz is done. And we'll get a good look at that. Our defense does it. Baltimore does it. So between Wednesday and Friday, those are two more nice chances, D.A. to get some good looks. Good news for us. Both of them are, you know, heady, smart players, what to go, where to look for. And so now let's battle it out some more. With Nick being set back, not set back, but injured, you know, we'll work him back in when we can.

But this week will be, you know, kind of devoted to Matt and to Julian as we're working through those two spots. So those were the two questions and the only two questions asked about the center position. during this morning's press conference. Nikki kicking it off to Dan Quinn, does he feel that they have the talent they need on the current roster at that position? And the first sentence of his answer is all you need to know. He says, quote, we do, but we still have work to do there,

honestly, closed quote. And then at the end of that soundbite, you heard him say, you know, they're still in the process of evaluating what the best, way to go is and that it's one of the spots that they're still digging in on still looking. They will be scouring the waiver wire, you know, as teams start to make cuts over the weekend and then post 6 p.m., which is the deadline to get down to 53 on Sunday. Whenever they can first start trying to sign players, I think the center position,

there's a pretty good chance that they're going to end up with a veteran center. on their roster that's not currently on their roster that's going to have a chance to play in the opener against Philadelphia if Nick Allegrety is still banged up. Plan A is Nick Allegretty for now. I mean, I think plan A in the offseason was Tyler Linderbaum. But plan A, ever since Linderbom signed in Vegas, is Nick Allegrety to be the starting center in 2026. And there's still a chance that he's going to be the starting center throughout 2026. But he's been banged up. There's some concern there. And obviously, after those three snaps, there's some concern with Julian Good Jones, who's really not necessarily a guy that you're going to feel great about putting out

there in the opener against Philadelphia's Jalen Carter and Jordan Davis and company, Zach Bonn, etc. You know, that's not what they're going to want to do. They're going to want Nick Allegredy to be out there and it's very possible he's going to be out there and he's going to be healthy. We still have three weeks, now less than three weeks, 20 days before the opener, plenty of time for him to be healthy and ready to go. Now, the David Aldridge question that ended the press conference about what he needs to see from Julian Good Jones and Matt Galvin, he says he feels comfortable with them in the system, meaning their knowledge of the system, the calls they have to make, how to recognize defensive, you know, alignments and then communicate what they should be doing along the offensive line to everybody else.

But what's obvious is Allegretti is the one that they feel best about physically. You know, you can be a great communicator. You can be a great identifier of what sort of, you know, blocking set and scheme you need to. adjust pre-snap into, but then get absolutely barreled over by a better and stronger defensive front. Can't have that, you know? So I think that this is the position that we've talked a lot about all off-season, and it's the one that if it turns into a disaster this year, they're going to get hung on the most by, you know, us, you guys, everybody. Again, what were the options? Tyler Linderbaum. I think I said, you know, a couple of weeks after

free agency's first phase, that I think I would have overpaid for Linderbom. I know that that is not necessarily a popular position with people who think the center position isn't super important. I would have viewed him as just an A-plus physical specimen offensive lineman, interior-wise, who by the way, plays center. A couple of extra million than you were playing. planning on than you offered, it may have been worth it to have had that position solidified heading into 2026, even if it was considered to be an overpayment. All right. Ben Standing asked Quinn about the competition levels at various spots on the roster.

And who stood out most in terms of the way they've competed. for their spot. He mentioned several players, but there's one in particular that I want to play for you that he talks about. And you'll hear him mention the name right now. The receivers, I could list a number of them.

Jalen Lane's probably one that comes to mind because it could also be Ben. I see the jump that's taken place with him. He's a better route runner. He's in crazy shape. He's making more plays maybe than he would have last year at a slot where he said, okay, let's start him at Returner.

and see where it can end up now a threat on both sides. So I thought that was an interesting description of Jalen Lane right now because I think last year, and he even alludes to this, Jalen Lane was not ready as a rookie to be an NFL receiver, even though he saw a lot of time because of all of the injuries. Puntmer Turner, first rate as a rookie. Wide receiver, not so much. So when you hear that he, you know, is taking this big jump, you know,

and he's a better route runner, and he's in crazy, shape and he's making more plays than he would have last year. That is, I think, a tell that Jalen Lane's going to be a part of the rotation at wide receiver. They're going to find ways to get the ball into his hands. So it's Terry, it's Diggs, it's probably Burke's as another outside guy, we'll see, but Jalen Lane's going to be on the field some too. I think that's, I did not think that Jalen Lane was going to be.

that guy that would be a part of this rotation going into camp. I didn't think he would get cut because I thought his punt return prowess would be enough to keep him on the roster. And I think that that's true, even if he wasn't impressing as a wide receiver right now. But I thought it was an interesting name for him to go on and on about. That kind of tells you that Jalen Lane's going to be more of of, you know, a wide receiver this year than maybe we thought a few weeks ago. And then what was the other soundbite that I wanted to play for you? This was him talking about, you know, the schedule today, you know, with the practice and then the joint practice and then, you know, does he have a sense on whether or not, you know,

Jaden's going to end up playing in the preseason game Friday night in Baltimore? here's what he said. As far as Jaden goes, we haven't gone there with the game, but having the joints a big deal for us. And so that's where we want to get a lot of reps for him and for many others. So it won't be all balanced in terms of in Miami, it was a little more balanced,

you know, quite about 50-50 in terms of plays. This one would be a little more shifted towards Jaden and some of the group with him. He's basically telling you there, Jaden's going to get a lot of, lot of the work in the joint practice and is not going to play with the starters in the preseason finale against Baltimore. I'll tell you what I'd hate to see is them to trot out for a three-play series and then leave the game as if there'd be any value to that 16 days before the opener.

But he connected from 69 yards out. That's the second longest made field goal in NFL history, if you count preseason games as well. Now, preseason kicks don't count in the official records.

Last year, Cam Little in Jacksonville had a 70-yard field goal. He holds the real records, the regular season records. He kicked a 68-yarder in November last year against the Raiders. He also has the second longest field goal. in NFL history. He kicked a 67-yarder last year in the regular season finale against the Titans. Cam Little is Jacksonville's kicker. So I hate this. I love talking about and have always loved talking about long-field goal attempts, long-field goals made. Do you know the longest field goal attempt in NFL history? Sebastian Janikowski attempted a field goal from 76 yards out that he missed.

Mark Mosley attempted a 74-yard field goal. This was all the way back in the 1979 season in the opener against the Houston Oilers. It was on a free kick where the punt returner called for a fair catch, and then you had a free kick where there was no rush. We've talked about that rule before. Mosley also has a 70-yard attempt to his credit as well. He missed both of them.

Look, the reason we have seen an unbelievable increase in made long field goals and even some record long field goal attempts or getting close to them is that last year they changed the rule with the kicking ball, the K ball. Instead of kickers having being delivered three footballs before a game begins, 90 minutes before it begins and having the chance to work the ball for 90 minutes. They're now given 60K balls before the season begins, and that apparently made a massive difference last year. The kickers were able to work the ball into the kind of shape that gave them the best chance to be accurate and for distance. and we saw an exponential increase in made 55 plus yarders and made 60 plus yarders. I just don't like it for this primary reason. With the new kickoff rule and the average starting field position at about the 33 yard line,

you are literally a first down away for some kickers from starting to think field goal. Not all first downs and in 10 total yards. some of them end up in 15 to 20 total yards in the first three plays of a series. You gain 20 yards from your own 33 or 15 yards to the 48. For some teams now, you are almost in field goal range, if not in field goal range. Reaching midfield is field goal range. Now, a lot of teams aren't going to try 67-yarders, 68-yarders, 70-yarders, you know, during the course of a game unless it's the end of the half or the end of the game.

but still I want offenses to have to earn points. One first down or two and you get three points isn't enough for me. I think it's taking a bit too much out of what an offense needs to do to earn the right to score. I think it's ridiculous now. kickers coming onto the field, you know, with the ball literally lined up, you know, at their own 45-yard line, spotted at their own 45-for-65-yarder. It's cool to watch it when it happens to see if they can actually make it. But it's changed the game here recently. The level of offensive output needed for points is much less.

I don't like that part of the game. I would go back to providing them with footballs, kicking balls, 90 minutes before kickoff, and letting them do to it what they want to do to it, but not having, you know, weeks, if not months to get the footballs into shape. Because it clearly made a difference. Big NFL news today. First of all, 49ers owner Jed York pled no contest to a contest to a different. a pair of misdemeanor charges dealing with prostitution in which he literally, in an eastern Ohio trailer park, paid a prostitute $140 for sex. That's the allegation.

He was arrested upon arriving at the meeting location with this prostitute. a trailer park home, Eastern Ohio, $140. He's got other options, people. They're pricier options, but they're less risky options. I've heard. Also NFL news,

this was a bit of a stunner to me. Deshawn Watson named starter by Todd Munkin in Cleveland. You know, he played poorly the other night by all accounts. He held this press conference. Bashing Cleveland fans for booing him last year, for cheering when he got hurt last year, booing him the other night at home. Deshawn Watson's brought this on himself.

Before he got traded when he was asking for the trade from Houston, he literally pointed to teams that he would accept a trade to and teams he wouldn't. And on that list was Cleveland. Then he got traded there, got the biggest contract in NFL history, $230 million guaranteed, largest ever, terrible contract. And he's been hurt for most of it. He was suspended for 11 months after the massage, happy ending assault charges. 27 women wasn't convicted, but come on, smoke, fire.

27 masseuses came forward. Massage therapists came forward to say that they were assaulted, sexually assaulted by Deshawn Watson. He misses 11 games due to the suspension. Then he's hurt. he's only played in 19 regular season games, and he is stunk in almost all of them. When he played last year or two years ago against Washington, two years ago, right? In 24, he looked completely disinterested in playing football at that point. I'm shocked that Chedur Sanders, the young player who may not have a future in the NFL as a quarterback,

but at least is a young quarterback and unproven at this point, I'm shocked he didn't get the job from Monken. But Watson gets to open up the season with two road games, which is better, I guess, than opening with two home games. But still, wow, that I think was a shocker. I heard several people this morning on ESPN's Get Up show, the Greenberg show. Orlovsky, I think Dominique Foxworth said this, essentially saying that it should be Shadur and maybe they should move on right now from, Deshawn Watson. They can't because of the salary cap penalty that would be associated with cutting him. But I count me as majorly, majorly surprised at Deshawn Watson getting the number one job there.

One other NFL note, Kishon Booty, who was a potential trade target for Washington according to a couple of those, you know, stories on ESPN.com or CBS Sports before they acquired Diggs, traded today to Houston from New England for Houston safety, Jalen Reed, and a seventh round pick. Houston lost their number two receiver last week, Jaden Higgins, to a torn ACL. So they acquire Cajon Booty. They're different receivers, okay? Jaden Higgins is a big old six-foot-four-inch dude. And Cajon Booty is all of about 5-10, 5-11. but they needed another pass-catching threat for C.J. Stroud.

In a season, let's face it, where Houston's got to believe like they're a legitimate Super Bowl contender. They certainly have a Super Bowl contending defense on paper anyway, going into the season they do. And they traded a safety who played in a lot of football games last year in Jalen Reed, and he's got some talent. So booty from New England to Houston gives C.J. Stroud somebody else. I'm telling you, I'm still like I was last year, still very optimistic about Houston. And I have not given up on C.J. Stroud. I haven't. All right. That'll do it for the day back tomorrow with Tommy.
