Starting point is 00:00:02 You don't want it. You don't need it. But you're going to get it anyway. The Kevin Sheehan Show. Here's Kevin. Tommy's here. I am here. The show's presenting sponsor is always,
Starting point is 00:00:14 Window Nation. 86690 Nation or Window Nation. Dot com if you need new windows. I got this from my guy Tim. Tim is a big DC sports fan. He lives in Indianapolis, actually. I think this is the Tim that lives in Indianapolis. I'm through episode five of season two of Landman.
Starting point is 00:00:37 I feel the exact same way as you for all the reasons you hit on. I told my wife the other night almost word for word what you said. While I like season one, I didn't think it was the greatest show ever. It kept my interest, but season two is a pretty tough watch for me. It's on in the background while I do work on my computer. So for those of you who have watched Landman, and it has been a pretty popular show here of the last two years. Season one, I thought, was excellent, and I'm a big Billy Bob Thornton fan,
Starting point is 00:01:12 and he was so good in it. And I told Tommy the other day that over the last few days, I had gotten into season two, and I was six or seven episodes in, and it was terrible. I mean, I can't tell you how disappointed I was with the acting, the the storylines. It just, it sucked. But I told you the other day,
Starting point is 00:01:36 I'm going to stick it out at this point because there are only, you know, I think at that point two episodes left. I mean, there you go. That's all you got to know is that I didn't even know how many episodes there were in season two at that point because I had just kind of lost track. Season two has had 10 episodes.
Starting point is 00:01:55 So I was eight episodes in. And so I went home. the other night. And Kara had, she's been Tommy, she's been involved in a bridge club. Bridge Club, which is great. Apparently bridge is a great game. My father
Starting point is 00:02:12 plays bridge. He's apparently very good at it. My grandmother played bridge. I've never played bridge. But you don't know how, right? I don't know how. I don't know how. People love it that learn how to play it. My wife now is into this thing and she's learned how to
Starting point is 00:02:28 play in the whole thing. So she was out And I'm like, fine, I'm going to sit down. I'm going to grab something to eat and I'm going to watch these final two episodes of Landman. They were so good. Oh, my God. The finale was incredible. It came out of nowhere. And so I sent Tim this DM back.
Starting point is 00:02:50 I'm like, don't quit. Watch the final three episodes because the finale, which was about an hour and a half maybe, maybe a little bit less than that. was some of the best drama and some of the fastest moving good television I've seen in a while. That came out of nowhere because I was not expecting that. And good for them. They've hooked me back in for season three whenever it comes out. But the finale for those of you that have watched Landman that felt the same way I did about season two,
Starting point is 00:03:28 or you're about to sit down and get into season two. It's not fun for the first eight episodes, but the final two were absolutely worth it. Should they just fast forward? Well, I don't know if you'll get it by the time you get there, but yeah, it's funny how that worked out. I was floored by that, but the finale is one of the better finalities I've seen of a show in a long time.
Starting point is 00:04:00 But anyway, there you go. Well, you know, look, I saw Billy Bob Thornton in a series called Goliath. Okay. And there were three seasons of it, and the first season was great. And let's face it, it's great because of him.
Starting point is 00:04:19 Yeah. Okay. The second season wasn't that good, and the third season was terrible. It's each, I just, maybe there's a pattern here. Yeah. What was the name of it? I don't think I ever saw it.
Starting point is 00:04:34 Goliath. Goliath. No, you probably never saw it, but it's worth a watch. At least the first season. Okay. He plays a lawyer, a down and out drunk lawyer. And he's very good at playing those kind of characters. Was Slingblade really the, the big breakout for Billy Bob Thornton?
Starting point is 00:04:52 I think so. Had to be, right? I think it was. Yeah. I think it was Well, this was My favorite Christmas movie Yeah
Starting point is 00:05:04 Bad Santa No, no, no, no What am I thinking of? With John Cusack Where They plays a lawyer That steals money from the... Oh, oh, oh, oh, you had me watch that movie
Starting point is 00:05:20 The Ice Something The Ice Harvest The Ice Harvest Yeah, you had me watched that. I had never seen that before, and it was great. It was such a great... Dave Bob Thornton's really good in that.
Starting point is 00:05:33 Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. But it doesn't surprise me. Again, I don't watch it because I've drawn a line in the sand when it comes to streaming, and I'm not adding anymore. Yeah. And Paramount, it's not on my watch list right now.
Starting point is 00:05:50 I mean, the other part of Landman season two for me and even my wife is that there's a lot of TCU in it. That's where my oldest went to school. You know, that was our first parent experience with college, TCU and Fort Worth. And it really was like one of those. I had TCU, Maryland, and Penn State, my three boys. Those are the three schools. And I have to say that the TCU experience for parents was great. You know, Fort Worth has a lot to offer. And, you know, a lot of his friends, parents, they were in the oil engagement.
Starting point is 00:06:26 and the energy business. And we made some good friends and still have those friends today. But the daughter goes to TCU, and so there are a lot of scenes on that campus, which is actually kind of a nice campus. All right. That's enough of that. I guess we have two big topics today, the trade. I spent, you know, certainly some time on yesterday's show, talk. about it, had Josh Robbins, who covers the Wizards on the show yesterday. And then I had Bobby
Starting point is 00:07:01 Marks, who is an NFL front office, NBA, excuse me, front office insider for ESPN, used to be a GM. I had him on radio. So I've done a lot on this trade. And my feelings really haven't changed since yesterday. But I want to hear what Tommy has to say about it. And then we'll talk a little bit about the post. It became official yesterday. All of the big companies. in the sports section, essentially for all intents and purposes, going away. And we'll get to that as well. So the Wizards traded for Anthony Davis, Tommy. You say what?
Starting point is 00:07:42 You know, I'm a little confused by it, okay, because I'm a little bit confused by the excitement. Because, I mean, I guess it's the excitement as, wow, we can watch the basketball team again. at least for 30 games the season. Maybe not even that many. Yeah. Yeah. And I don't understand how this fits into their long-term plan. I mean, he'll be 33 in a month.
Starting point is 00:08:16 He's not going to get healthier. You know, the last couple years, he played in nine games, 42 games, 51 games, 76 games, 56 games, 46, 40, 36. Sixth this is his career. You know, he doesn't play. Look, I thought when he came out of college and in his early years, I thought he might have been the best player in the league.
Starting point is 00:08:39 He was close to it at times. I thought he was fabulous. For a guy with that skill, defensive skills who could shoot like he did, I thought it was great. But he's damaged goods. And he's not going to get healthier.
Starting point is 00:08:55 It's not going to happen. 33. Okay, that doesn't happen. So, I mean, I don't understand this. I mean, the wizards still don't have their lynchpin player. They're hoping to get it in this
Starting point is 00:09:12 upcoming draft. You know? But they don't have that lynchpin player yet. So if they let's say they get lucky in a draft, get the guy, the superstar player, the anchor that you need. to really build around. He's got to play two or three years in the league.
Starting point is 00:09:33 Cooper Flags playing pretty well in year one. But you're right. You're right. I agree. I'm just saying he's actually been incredible. He's great. He's great. But who else is going to score on that team?
Starting point is 00:09:50 Yeah. So, I mean, so they're, if people, if they get lucky in the draft, They're probably, you're looking at 2030 before they are competitive. And when I may think competitive, I don't mean the 45, 42 win competitive. I mean finally breaking 50 wins in a year and making it to an Eastern Conference finals. That should be the competitive we're talking about here. Because we've seen the other competitive, and it's an illusion. Yeah, I, some of the reporting today, which is interesting, is just that the Wizard
Starting point is 00:10:28 The Wizard's plan is to obviously not play these guys, Trey Young or Anthony Davis, this year. They can't do that. That would be organizational negligence, malpractice, to put their own first-round pick at risk. And just to explain for those that don't know, if they're outside the top eight in the lottery, after the lottery, they lose their first-round pick.
Starting point is 00:10:53 And to guarantee that they're within the top eight, they have to have one of the four worst records. It doesn't mean, by the way, if they finish with the fifth or sixth worst record, that they're guaranteed to have a pick because that's what the lottery is. I mean, they could end up with the eighth or ninth worst record and get number one. But if they end up post-lottery picking nine or lower, they lose the pick. And to guarantee that that doesn't happen, they have to have one of the four worst records in the NBA. What kind of fucked up league is this?
Starting point is 00:11:25 Well, they tried to... You trade for two guys that you're not going to play. Well, that's... That doesn't happen anyplace else. Bobby Mark said that. He said, this certainly was a first for me, and I said, how so? And he said, well, rarely at the trade deadline, do you pull off a big heavyweight trade like this and the one that they did a few weeks ago? And neither player is going to play this year.
Starting point is 00:11:50 You know, it's usually for a run in that particular year. So, but one of the things that was reported today, and I'm actually looking for it, I've seen it a couple of times, so I'm not going to even credit anybody, is that the wizard's plan is to not play these guys this year, and then to extend both of them in the offseason. There's a player option for Trey Young, and of course he would pick it up because it's $49 million. And then Anthony Davis is under contract in 20, the year, next year, for next year. for next year at 62 million. Any year after that? No, it's 58 million for the rest of this year, 62 million for next year.
Starting point is 00:12:30 Oh, okay. Yeah. So look, everything you said about Anthony Davis, injury-wise, age-wise, is 100% true. I've sat here during NBA playoff, you know, months, and made fun of Anthony Davis because he's truly been at times excruciating to watch because he's been such a big baby.
Starting point is 00:12:55 I mean, the number of times you see him rolling around on the floor after a hip check, and then, you know, he's over on the bench, and then the next thing you see is a towel over his head, and then he's walking back to the locker room, and then you read the next day he's out for two weeks. And it's just been, you know, this player's talent's been unmistakable. His production when he's played has been top five-ish to top-tenth-ish. over the course of his career.
Starting point is 00:13:24 But he's soft. It's just what he is. I mean, I went through, I mean, look, some of these injuries have been really serious injuries. I'm not saying every injury's been, but the articles written about, you know, his penchant for missing games when a lot of other players would play
Starting point is 00:13:44 with, you know, whatever injuries he's had. You get the total number of injuries, Tommy. 296 reported injuries serious and non-serious during the course of his career, affecting 51 unique body parts. He's had 50-plus foot-related issues, 20-plus for back ankle and Achilles. He's missed 232 career games in 13 and a half years. And oh, by the way, he's hurt currently. He damaged a ligament or, you know, it was apparently.
Starting point is 00:14:21 serious to begin with, but now, you know, it's five weeks, but he doesn't need surgery. He's going to drive me crazy, you know, if he's playing and out there because they're going to be days where I'm like, come in here and talk about, I just can't believe that a grown man can have somebody step on his foot and react that way, you know, because that's what you've gotten from him. But here's why I really like the trade, because they barely gave up anything. I know that. It doesn't mean anything to me. Well, it does to me.
Starting point is 00:14:56 I mean, moving forward, what is it going to accomplish? Well, here's what it will accomplish. Number one is, if he is healthy, and he does play 60, 65 games next year, this is a team that's going to win 45 games or more next year. I love the idea of Trey Young and Anthony Davis as a two-man combo offensively. They fit together perfectly. You know, Trey Young needs that guy that can pick and pop, that can pick and roll and catch a lob and finish. And then Trey Young is a scorer and a creator.
Starting point is 00:15:41 He is not a defender. And when they traded for him a few weeks ago, he's not a defender. Look, he's never been one of my favorite players. And Anthony Davis is because of the, you know, the softness has never been one of my favorite players. But the two of them actually fit well together. Now, they've got to be out there together. Understood all of that.
Starting point is 00:15:59 But there's a real, like, obvious. And then the young developing parts fit perfectly too, especially a guy like Trey Johnson, who is a legit, extend the floor, space the floor, shooter. And by the way, Sar. The only one they have. No, he's not the only one they have. Trey Young can obviously shoot and can space the floor
Starting point is 00:16:24 big time. Trey Young is a terrible shoot. No, he's not, Tommy. We've had this conversation. You're just looking at percentages. Okay, there have been a lot of reasons for that. He's absolutely a good shooter and absolutely spaces the floor. There's no team that's going to go underneath screens with him
Starting point is 00:16:40 consistently. Okay, he absolutely, not only that, He can shoot it from deep. And by the way, Trey Johnson can really shoot it from deep. And I'll tell you what, Alex Sarr, for a big five, can really stroke it. And I think it's going to continue to improve. And then... What's your basis for Trey Young being a good shooter?
Starting point is 00:17:02 My eyes. Oh, okay. Yeah. Okay. My eyes. He's been a high-volume shooter, which has led to some of the lower percentages that you're looking at, but if you don't think that Trey Young's got a good stroke, sorry, I can't help you
Starting point is 00:17:20 with that. He's got an excellent stroke. He's a good score. He's actually, like you said, he needs the ball. He dominates the ball. He does dominate the ball, and I hate ISO, and I hate, you know, exclusively two-man, but that's the game. That's just the game now. You know, it's a 24-second shot clock that it's always been, but defenses are bigger and longer and you've got zone and it's just you know there you get into your stuff quickly and that
Starting point is 00:17:50 my idea of five-man or four-man basketball with ball reversals and motion and screens everywhere it's like the nuggets like the nuggets do like to actually kind of like the nuggets do but with jamaul marie and yokic there's a lot of two-man basketball um but but uh i i i like that I like that combination. Like I can envision that combination healthy being a real difficult combination to defend. And then with some of the other stuff they have, and of course the wild card here is, do they get lucky in the lottery? Do they get the right guy, Darren Peterson or AJ DeBonsa, you know,
Starting point is 00:18:33 and where does that guy fit in? Maybe not next year to your point. Maybe not even the year after, but three years down the road. and maybe Anthony Davis and Tray Young end up being guys, and here's the second part of it for me, that allow these young developing players to develop in basketball games that matter. You know, I think, and Josh Robbins was on with me yesterday,
Starting point is 00:19:01 and he made this point, and it's such a good point, you're not developing when you're not playing meaningful basketball. and two and a half years, you're just trying to find guys that you think have the potential when you decide to go for it and try to start winning. But when you're the wizards of the last two and a half years, your opponents don't take you seriously. The games themselves mean nothing to the standings unless you start winning a few. And so I just think development next year with a team, if Anthony Davis is,
Starting point is 00:19:39 on the floor, and that's a big if, that is playing games where they matter to the standings, and then you get into postseason games and they matter. I think that's much more revealing and much better developmentally. Let me let me say this. You're going to build these guys are going to be the role model for your younger players. One guy who makes you sick to your stomach with how soft he is, and the other guy who's arguably one of the worst offenders in the league. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:20:11 Who is the all-time, the all-time turnover leader point per game in the history of the NBA. Is that true? I mean, I know that Trey Young has been a high-turnover guy. Yeah. Really? He is, Google it. Google turnovers per game. Who's at the top of the list?
Starting point is 00:20:30 Trey Young. So, this is your role model. Yeah, all-time turnovers per game, huh? Is that what you said? that's what he's was it for one season or is it for career no career career
Starting point is 00:20:45 it's like 4.3 or something like that yeah because I would have guessed I would have guessed somebody else but like I would have guessed Russell Westbrook a lot you have well Russell Westbrook is two or three you have the ball a lot you're going to turn the ball over
Starting point is 00:21:05 well I get that that's 100% true magic Johnson is high on that list Yes, yeah, I bet John Stockton's on that list. Yeah, but he's the top. But this is the worst. He's the worst. I didn't know that. But it doesn't surprise me.
Starting point is 00:21:24 But again, to your point, ball dominant players end up turning the ball over in games. I know. I know that. So he was 4.7 turnovers per game last year. And he was the comeback. He was an all-star last year, also averaging 24.2 points per game. That's the NBA. It is that, you know, the valuing of possessions because there's so many more and the pace is increased and it's just a different game. You could argue that this is just as much and we don't know,
Starting point is 00:22:01 a ploy by the owner to create more interest as it is in the development of your basketball team. Yeah. You could make a case for either one, because we don't know what the truth is. Here's why I don't think you can make the case for that. Because you didn't, this would, this, according to the reporting, this wasn't something that was in the plans a week ago, or even a couple of days ago. It just kind of landed in their lap with Dallas. All takes is a couple phone calls. Well, but Dallas.
Starting point is 00:22:36 But, but Dallas. He's picking up the phone. But part of it is that Cooper, Flags had this unbelievable stretch of games. Right. You know, and so Dallas just decided, you know what, we're just, we got a chance here to salary dump. Because basically Anthony Davis was part of a salary dump, you know, yesterday.
Starting point is 00:22:56 And who's the first, who's the first dopes we could call? Well, no. But the point is, the point is they took advantage of basically a salary dump where they didn't have to give up anything. A bag of nickels, as I said yesterday. I mean, I shouldn't say it's nothing because there are first round picks and second round picks. And who knows, you know, watch Dallas with one of those second round picks get the next
Starting point is 00:23:21 to Yokic. But, you know, I absolutely think that there is benefit and not, what they've been doing, you know, I've been in favor of. But if this had continued with, you know, you know, you know, like Josh made this point to me yesterday, too, which I thought was a really good point. I had never considered it because everybody kept saying, this is the draft that they've kind of been gearing towards. This is the one with, you know, Cam Boozer a few years ago was supposed to be the number one pick in this draft. But now you've got not only, you know, Boozer, DeBonsa, and Peterson, you've got the kid from Carolina, Caleb Downs.
Starting point is 00:24:03 This is a draft that has the best opportunity, you know, since the Wembegne, draft. People think that the top of this draft is better than Cooper Flag, which, you know, he's proving to be maybe generational. It's too bad the Wizards didn't get him. But you, this was going to be the last year of this, and then starting next year, they were going to start trying to win games and, you know, find that thing. But that process was going to start with next year, can they win 35? The year after that, can they make the play in? The year after that, can they be a playoff team without making the play in.
Starting point is 00:24:39 The year after that, can they actually contend for something? So, you know, we were waiting for 2029, 2030 to find out how this thing worked out. And I think what they've done here is they haven't given up any of their ability to continue to do what they've been doing, but they're going to make the developmental process, a process in which they're winning simultaneously. And that relies on Anthony Davis, obviously, to be healthy. Or else they hurt the process. You know, Trey Young is here because nobody else wanted him in the league.
Starting point is 00:25:18 Yeah. He said he wanted to come to Washington. Well, that was because nobody else wanted him. No, I understand that. And he's not going to stay here. Well, just be clear about this. It's not that nobody wanted him. It's that nobody wanted him at his, you know, with a $49 million player option for next year.
Starting point is 00:25:39 You know, there are plenty of teams that actually would have taken Tray Young, but they didn't want him at that number for next year. But there's another part to this. And this is where you're going to have a problem, I think, because you don't want to give them any credit whatsoever. I shouldn't say that. That's my, that's how I feel. That's what, that's my gut on how you're going to handle this. they've actually done a really good job in the front office over the last couple of years in creating this opportunity, which doesn't guarantee anything.
Starting point is 00:26:12 Just like the Oklahoma City process didn't guarantee anything in the Philadelphia, the process was named after what Josh Harris's 76ers with Brett Brown and, you know, and company were doing in Philly. And it didn't guarantee anything because they haven't won anything. Although, man, Embeded is a player. I mean, watching him beat, he's really sensational when he's healthy. And Maxie's a great player. But anyway, what they've done, starting with trading Bradley Beale, which was a year too late because the previous administration didn't do it.
Starting point is 00:26:44 They should have done it a year earlier. They would have ended up with a lot more. But when you follow the trail, and it's out there, everybody's put the trail out there. You know, Beals 250 million dollar max deal to get rid of it. of him was a miracle. But essentially, Beal turned into, along with Kyle Kuzma, if you want to follow the trail, Beal brought Chris Paul, which brought Jordan Poole. By the way, Jordan Poole played well here, which brought C.J. McCollum here. Kuzma brought Chris Middleton here. McCollum got Trey Young or is a part of the deal. Middleton was part of the deal for Davis. And all the while,
Starting point is 00:27:30 They're drafting lots of players in the first rounds, you know, et cetera, and guys like Alex Saar look really good right now here early in his career. Kishon George, I've been a fan of for a while. Is he a superstar? No, I really like what I've seen recently from Will Riley, and Trey Johnson's going to be the real deal as a shooter and a score. And they still have so many picks. They haven't given up any true picks of values.
Starting point is 00:28:00 and not one of their young players that have real potential have they given up. They've done a good job. The front office has done an excellent job. It's a little bit reminiscent of what we've seen like in Oklahoma City. This is, you know, where Will Dawkins came from, you know, and Winger's got some experience with it too. This is not a Bush League front office, you know, situation anymore, Tommy. It isn't. I'm not guaranteeing a championship. Wait, wait, wait, wait, wait.
Starting point is 00:28:34 I've never said, I've never judged what they're doing now because I recognize what they're doing. Well, you just said they succumbed, it's possible they succumb to the owner's desire to get something done now. Who owns the team? Do they own the team or does Ted own? They don't. But I don't think Ted's, I don't think Ted's pushing this on them. Well, you don't know. I don't know. There's a scenario where that's feasible. Except that they didn't do anything that hurt themselves moving forward. They didn't give up something.
Starting point is 00:29:05 What's going to have to wait and see? Again, I think these two guys are not necessarily the guys you want on a team that's building. I don't think you want these guys around your young players. Why? Just because, I mean, they're not, they're not, this isn't Javar's prittenden. Because he's so soft. Yeah, look, I mean, I think he is, and I think a lot of people would say that about watching Anthony Davis. They'd also say the dude's an absolute freak when he is playing and he is healthy.
Starting point is 00:29:42 And it's been a while. Anthony Davis is the kind of guy who a team that's running for a championship tricket, okay, to complement what they have. Not a team that's building. Tommy, next year. If he plays 65-70-plus games with Trey Young and what they have, they're going to be, and I said this yesterday, they're going to be a contender in the Eastern Conference. Now, I don't think they're going to win the Eastern Conference championship and make it to the finals next year because Jason Tatum is going to be back in Boston, you know, again.
Starting point is 00:30:17 And the Celtics will be, you know, if they're healthy, it was certainly the team to beat. But the East right now is wide open. I mean, the Raptors were in the lottery this past year, and look at the season they're having. If Anthony Davis is a legitimate superstar big two-way player when he plays, this is all contingent on him actually playing and being healthy. And trust me, I understand the chances aren't overwhelmingly great that that's going to happen. But if it does, they could be a really good team next year. So, and if they end up signing these two guys to long-term contract extensions,
Starting point is 00:30:59 if the reporting is right on that, they believe that Anthony Davis and Trey Young are two veteran all-star players that can continue to be all-stars for a few more years and be a part of a contending team with their young nucleus and whoever they draft, hopefully, in June. I'm you know how much I want these games to matter with the Wizards in April, May, and June, and it sucks when I don't have that. And I had it for a few years there with Wall and Beal and some of those players and some of those teams that I really liked watching. I knew they weren't going to win a title. This is totally different.
Starting point is 00:31:39 It may not guarantee a title. It may not end in championship contention, but they're doing it in a way. in which they've got a better chance than they've ever had before. Next year could be a 45, 46, 47, dare I say it, 50-win team that's a three or a four seat in the Eastern Conference playoffs. Hell silly. Is they going to look when he plays 11 games? I know that's a real possibility that he plays 11 games.
Starting point is 00:32:14 He's only played in 70 games three times in his career. I know. Yeah. But when he's done that, he's been really, really good. Yes. When last time he did that, he was 27. Well, remember, when they won the title, that was, you know, and then the year after, we had a limited number of games. So don't look for 82 in the 2019-2020 season when they won the title in the bubble in the COVID. And, um, 2021. 2021, they, they limited the games too. But 2020 was the, was the, was the bubble.
Starting point is 00:32:55 He played in NBA finals. That's one of his, that's one of his big years. Yeah, but I don't know, did, I don't think they played 82 that year as, as it, so he may have played all 62 games. Yeah, they, they played 70. I'm looking at it. I don't even think he had his driver's license then. They, they played 71 games in, uh, 2019, 2020. So they cut, were, they cut off the right.
Starting point is 00:33:16 season, right? I mean, that was the big thing. It was the NBA that, well, it was actually kind of Harvard that shut it down, right? When they, or not Harvard, but, but the Ivy League wasn't that pretty much when you said, I think that was the year that you said to me, the moment you said to me when I said, well, God, man, the Big Ten tournament might be shut down with the Terps getting ready for it, and you're like, the Big Ten tournament, they're not going to play the NCAA tournament. What are you talking about? And I just laughed at you.
Starting point is 00:33:55 Like, what do you mean they're not going to play the NCAA tournament? He said, the Ivy League just shut it down. It's over. It's over. When the smart guys knew how bad it was, that was where the money was. But the NBA shut down before college because it was Rudy Gobert. Remember, Rudy Gobert tested. positive.
Starting point is 00:34:17 Yeah. For HIV. For COVID. Anyway, hopefully Anthony Davis won't get COVID again. I just don't want him to get a bad cold. He's such a delicate flower. A bad cold might cost him, you know, eight games. Look, I hope you're right.
Starting point is 00:34:36 It would be fun if to have them that do that. Do you really hope I'm right? Of course I do. Look, it, the Wizards. even though look, it drove me nuts that their general manager
Starting point is 00:34:51 with such a destructive force, but they still managed to make it creates with John Wall in particular, and Bradley Beal and Gortat, and now those teams, they were fun to watch. And they were good,
Starting point is 00:35:05 and, you know, they got to the seventh game of an Eastern Conference semi-final. And if their general manager had a bench, they might have gotten past there. But no, I liked those teams. I liked that.
Starting point is 00:35:21 I liked Randy Whitman as the coach. Me too. I liked all that. Yeah, you know what? I always knew it was flawed, and you knew it was. Yeah, I knew, yeah. But I knew that they also could win playoff series, and they could,
Starting point is 00:35:36 and they were very close to different occasions to getting to the Eastern Conference finals, where they probably would not have beaten Cleveland with LeBron. Probably not. Yeah. Probably not. But that would have been the first time since 1979 that they had made it to the Eastern Conference finals. That would have meant something.
Starting point is 00:35:53 And again, my arguments were, oh, my passion for writing about it was always clouded by I thought their general manager was a destructive force. I have no preconceived notions about Will Dawkins or Michael, what's his name? Winger. The team winger. I have no reason to believe that they have Ernie Grunfeld disease. Well, Ernie was really good at making trades. And they've done a good job. Ernie was really good at cleaning up his own mess.
Starting point is 00:36:30 Ernie didn't draft well. Ernie made great trades. Yes. An arsonist fireman. Right. By the way, the trade deadline is coming up right now. Actually, it just passed. were just past 3 o'clock, and the Wizards did not make it looks like any other deals.
Starting point is 00:36:50 So there you go. We got to wait for it. They're going to swim with Trey Young and Anthony Davis. Yeah. We have to wait for it. We're going to have to wait until next October to see what it looks like. And, you know, there's probably a pretty good chance during the preseason. Anthony Davis will get injured and miss the first three weeks of the regular season.
Starting point is 00:37:14 Yeah. All right. We have other things to get to. Anything else on this on our pro bat? Here's what you have to actually acknowledge. A team that has been literally a non-story for a long period of time over the last three weeks has generated some conversation for the first time in a while. yesterday for sure. Trey Young to a lesser extent. You asked me, you didn't ask me, somebody else asked me because I was on a radio show doing a hit on the Trey Young thing. They said, do you think this will move the needle
Starting point is 00:37:55 and people get excited and they'll sell more tickets and more people will watch? And I said, no, I don't see Trey Young as a needle mover. But I do see Anthony Davis as a needle mover. And the combination of a Davis young and let's just say a Darren Peterson, number one overall. That would have a lot of people, that would have a lot of people excited about next season. They get the kid they want in this draft, that would, that would pump people up.
Starting point is 00:38:23 Yeah. I mean, if they had gotten Cooper Flag somehow, if they had, you know, that would, I mean, there's another aspect to it as well. I mean, first white American-born, you know, potential superstar in forever. He has been, here are his last three games. He's gone for 49, by the way, on 20 of 29 shooting. He went for 34 on 13 of 25 shooting. And last night he went for 36, two nights ago, on 12 of 24 shooting. Guys shooting at like a 57% clip and averaging over 40 in his last three games.
Starting point is 00:39:05 That's pretty good. You know, you said something about how long it's been since they've, you know, been in the Eastern Conference finals. I mean, what's really even more remarkable than that is they have played one game seven in 47 years. And it was in that 2017 season against Boston. I mean, not making the Eastern Conference finals for that long is really bad. and I'm sure it's the longest stretch of anybody in the league. But playing one game seven in 47 years, the ultimate in the sport, game seven, and they've had one of those in 47 years.
Starting point is 00:39:53 Need some May and June basketball at the professional level in our city at some point. All right, let's get to the Washington Post thing. Just hit the plus button or the follow button on Apple and Spotify or anywhere else. you're listening to the show. That's a big deal for us as well. All right. I know we talked about this last week when it was first reported on,
Starting point is 00:43:45 and we spent some time on the podcast, discussing it and sharing some of our memories and some of the nostalgia that I had for the Washington Post, especially the sports section. But yesterday it became official. They gutted the staff, massive layoffs, and for all intents and purposes, the elimination of the sports section. So you're the journalist among the two of us, so I wanted to get your thoughts first,
Starting point is 00:44:15 and then I'll give you mine. Well, when the reality hit, when the layoffs were finally announced, I think it was pretty stunning, even though we thought we knew it was coming, to actually see the numbers, to actually see the people who were losing their jobs and to actually think of the ramifications of this.
Starting point is 00:44:39 I mean, just beyond sports. I just think this is not good for the country when the nation's capital, you know, as a paper like the Post, diminished so much like they have with these cuts. I mean, I don't know what your local news is going to be anymore. You know, I don't know what your D.C., Maryland, and Virginia, news outlets are going to be anymore. I saw the Baltimore Banner, which is a great new newspaper, digital newspaper, up in Baltimore. Last year they opened up a Bureau of Montgomery County.
Starting point is 00:45:19 Now they announced yesterday they're going to go to PG County, too. So they'll pick up the slack a little bit, but this is a big loss. you know, the Post. I mean, I never worked at the Post. I competed with a lot of guys at the Post. But this is a big loss for the nation's capital. But, you know, I mean, it's the way the industry has gone. The Atlanta Journal Constitution just stopped publishing, I think, their print edition.
Starting point is 00:45:52 You know, there are many newspapers, cities around the country that have no print edition for the newspaper anymore. And a digital edition necessarily come out every day. So in a way, it shouldn't have been a surprise, which pretty much leaves the New York Times. That's it. In terms of newspapers, the New York Times, which keeps growing. Yeah, it must keep growing. And I'm a subscriber to the athletic. I really actually enjoy the athletic.
Starting point is 00:46:21 And I've been a subscriber in the past to the New York Times. I guess I'm still a subscriber to the Times if I'm a subscriber to the Athletic. but I have that. I have the Post, which I probably won't keep. I don't think there's any reason for me to keep my subscription to the Post anymore. And I've got a subscription to the Journal. Wall Street Journal, New York Times Athletic and Post, and I guess I'll be down to two after this.
Starting point is 00:46:48 I have a subscription to the Post. Now I'm going to cancel. I have a subscription to the Baltimore Banner, the Frederick News Post, my local paper. and the New York Times, which I get the athletic through. But they're at now. They won the battle. A USA Today is still around, but barely.
Starting point is 00:47:10 You know, they're hanging on. Everyone else is hanging on, and the New York Times is growing. And in part, and I talked about this the other day, but I did some research. I found this. This is basically the description of Wardle, by AI, artificial intelligence. Wardle has been a transformative, high engagement, and strategic user acquisition tool
Starting point is 00:47:37 for the New York Times since its 2022 acquisition, driving tens of millions of new users to their website. It serves as a major gateway to the games portfolio. Yeah. This is what the post, that they didn't think, they didn't think outside the box. They didn't figure out ways to generate more interest to get people into the, into the newspaper, and then have, you know, maybe they'll read your stuff.
Starting point is 00:48:08 You know, you got, you got to, you got to, you got to be a carnival barker. And it's always been that way in the newspaper business. You know, it's about like a hundred years ago. They had, they had games to sell newspapers. Games and horoscopes were selling newspapers. back then you get them in the building and then you know they maybe don't read your stuff
Starting point is 00:48:30 and then the journalism will take over but it's it's not good for the country it's certainly not good for my business and you know there's been a lot of conjecture of now somebody's going to step in and with a sports startup
Starting point is 00:48:49 in D.C. You know I think Mark Hein on social media hadn't mentioned, you know, maybe he had something he might be interested in. But here's the thing. If somebody does that, they're going to pay kids to write for them. Okay. The post writers made six-figure salaries. That's not going to happen in a D.C. sports startup. Interesting. I'm actually curious as to whether or not something like that could actually make money. If something like that actually has, you know, a business model around it that would really work.
Starting point is 00:49:29 Because if you're right, if the only way to do it would be to, you know, keep the cost structure low and pluck, you know, young just graduated journalism students out of school, to be reporters, to be columnists, to be content providers, where are the subscribers for that? You know, where's the audience for that? I don't know, you know, everything there is to know about your business. by a long shot and I don't know everything there is to know about the business that I'm in, but I know enough to know that in this day and age, if you're trying to start something from scratch and media and you don't bring an existing audience to the table day one, it's really hard.
Starting point is 00:50:12 Even if you flipped it around and you decided, you know, in this new venture, you're going to go higher costs and hire people with an audience. Those audiences better, be big enough and loyal enough and sticky enough to support the cost structure at that point. I don't know. I'm probably missing something. But I want to make sure I'm clear on something that you just said. Is word is not having a like I I play wordel every day with my sister and my mother. It's actually free.
Starting point is 00:50:46 So it's a, you know, it's a customer acquisition opportunity because it is. It's the gateway to the other games. But are you telling me that you believe that the post's lack of innovation outside the box game thinking costs them dearly in their battle against the New York Times? I know it sounds absurd, and I think it's a contributing factor. I literally do. I think if they had won the Wardle battle, I think I don't think we're having this conversation. But here's the one thing that complicates it. I mean, Jeff Bezos is the guy who owns the post.
Starting point is 00:51:29 And I know everyone likes to make money. Nobody likes to lose money. But this really is it can't be just about money. Okay? Because these are like, these are flicks of sand for Bezos. Bezos, and I'm going to watch down here in a couple weeks, he's going to be shooting off rockets down here. You know?
Starting point is 00:51:51 You enjoy his rockets. Well, I've been watching Elon's Rockets, too. Bezos come later this month. Blue Origin. Their launches come later in the month. So, you know, there's a famous line in Citizen Kane where the Orson Well's character, his lawyer says,
Starting point is 00:52:12 you know, you're going to lose a million dollars a year on this newspaper. And he said he's going to lose a million dollars on this newspaper. And Orson Welles says something like, yes, I know. I can lose a million dollars next year, and the year after that, and the year after that, for 140 more years, okay? Don't tell me I'm losing a million dollars. Okay, there's more to owning a newspaper than the money. So I think there's more to destroying a newspaper than the money.
Starting point is 00:52:44 Well, if you're intimating that, you know, he bought it to destroy it, he certainly could have bought it and changed the way. it was perceived with different opeds, different writers, a different, you know, advocacy, you know, in the writing. I didn't think he bought it to destroy it. Okay. I just said agenda changed. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:53:06 Look, a lot has changed in this country over the past eight years. Yeah. So, uh, and, look, they, they had some editors who made some bad decisions after Marty Barron left. You know, they, they, they, they went on spending sprees that maybe they shouldn't have. But again, I don't think it's all money. It's one of the reason that this thing is being torpedoed like it is and turning into Politico, basically.
Starting point is 00:53:34 It's not good, and it's an end of an era because the post was at the beginning. The Watergate era sent thousands of kids to journalism school. No doubt. All wanting to be Woodward and Bernstein. okay, I wanted to be Dick Young. But so, you know, and that's not in anymore. I have a hard time when kids say to me, you know, I want to be a writer. I want to get into business, and I have no answers for them.
Starting point is 00:54:07 Yeah, it's not that dissimilar, actually, to when young people ask me about, you know, getting into radio. All right, we've got more on this, and we will get to it after these words from a few of our sponsors. All right, Tommy, I've got just a few thoughts on the post and the sports section going away specifically. I know we talked about some of these things on last week's show, but number one is this. You know, I hear you on the idea that if the owner of the paper, Jeff Bays, Zos felt like it was important, as important to the country as you do, as important to the city
Starting point is 00:59:26 and the community as you do, you know, he could have done something about it. You know, I'm not into spending other people's money, but he certainly, if he felt it, you know, if he was emotionally attached to it in the way that so many are, if he felt, you know, that it was super important for it to survive, he obviously could have done something about it and done what you said, you know, Orson Wells did and Citizen Kane, which is subsidized the whole thing by himself. He could have done that. Secondly, I don't know any of the specific reasons as to why this happened. I've read a lot over the last 24 hours, and there's a lot of different opinions out there, including from people who have worked there recently and were laid off. I do know enough, I think,
Starting point is 01:00:14 to at least make the following educated guess. When you see massive, layoffs like this. It's usually because the business is losing money hand over fist. You know, they brought this guy in Lewis, I think his name was, a few months back, to do what he just did more likely than not. You know, it works that way in a lot of businesses. The board, the owner, you know, brings in a new CEO or a new CFO or a new chief operating officer, and that person's given the job of chopping off heads to get costs, control. You know, they go through the company, you know, gone, gone, gone, gone, until they get to the number that they're looking to get to. Now, I was thinking about something,
Starting point is 01:01:00 you know, as it relates to all of these layoffs. I can't imagine that costs are like this new skyrocketing issue. I may be wrong about that. To me, it makes more sense that revenue's been the problem as to why the business isn't making money or as much money as it used to or whatever, you know, the actual bottom line has been. But clearly not a healthy bottom line with all of these layoffs. And that's where I'm going to be totally honest and say that I personally have not consumed the paper, the post, anywhere near the same way that I used to. It's not been the same for me in recent years. The sports section I'm talking about specifically, but really the paper overall, sports-wise, too much emphasis on national, too much on things that I don't care as much
Starting point is 01:01:55 about. Since I first learned to read, the post-sport section was a must every day for me. And it just hasn't been the same way in recent years. And I'm sure that there are others that have felt the same way. So when it comes specifically, you know, to sports, it just hasn't been the same in that paper. Now, there are people that I wouldn't miss and that I haven't missed. I don't miss Sally ever. I think that I think you and Sally have the best on the attack columns of anybody in town for a long period of time. Barry, I hardly ever miss. There are reporters there that have been excellent.
Starting point is 01:02:42 but being honest, it's not been the same for me. You know, it hasn't. And I bet you others have felt the same way. And therein lies the subscriber issue, the revenue issue, or at least part of the reason for it. Lastly, you know, we talked about this last week, but man, was this paper and the sports section of this paper in particular a huge part of my life? I am telling you, Tommy, I was not a big reader when I was a kid except for reading sports. And number one on the list was the post sports section every single day. It was habitual.
Starting point is 01:03:23 I mean, I got up. I raced to the front door. There was an excitement to it when you woke up. And by the way, it was the same as an adult, especially, you know, when you had the print version delivered up until, you know, five, six, seven years ago was probably the last time I had a print version delivered. But getting to that front door, opening the door, grabbing the paper, bringing it in, slapping it down on the kitchen table, opening it up, grabbing the sports section, reading it front to back. It was the best. You know, you couldn't wait to read the recap of a game that you watched the night before along with a box score because, you know, way back in the day, it's not like you got the box scores online. Or reading, you know, news that you didn't know about, sports news that you didn't know about.
Starting point is 01:04:09 or reading a column about a game or a team or a player or anything else. It was, you know, I'm nostalgic about it because it was such a huge part of my life, especially when I was young. You know, we went through all the, you know, the writers and reporters and columnists and, you know, kind of legends from that paper, you know, last week when we talked about this. But yeah, I mean, it was my reading experience as a kid. I mean, the Washington Post Sports Section every day was my, you know, number one, I'm going to read today. I know that.
Starting point is 01:04:51 There was no question about I'm going to read today. And it started every morning with the post sports section. By the way, to a lesser degree, the star was the same thing for me when I was a kid. But it started the morning. There were a lot of great reporters who were. work for the star. Great reporters that worked for the star. And that was a great second paper in town for a long period of time in a great sports section. No, it's not. You know, there's how newspapers have changed since my early days. In 1986, I was a news that I was an editor and a columnist
Starting point is 01:05:28 at the Baltimore Sun. I was in charge of the Howard County edition. You know, they had like a neighbor's edition. The Post used to have a Maryland weekly, a D.C. weekly, Virginia weekly. Well, I was in charge of the Howard County that came out twice weekly for the Baltimore Sun. And I also wrote a column in that section. And I won first place in the National Society of Newspaper Column. Was that one on your mantle in your office? That's one I have. Yeah. Okay. I don't remember seeing that one. And they had the convention in Phoenix. And the Arizona Republic was the host for the convention, the newspaper columnist association convention.
Starting point is 01:06:15 Right. And one of the nights, the Arizona Republic hosted a party at their newspapers ranch. The newspaper owned a rant. Was it nice? Yeah, it was nice. It was nice. They had an Olympic-sized swimming pool. at the ranch. This was when, you know, in the 80s,
Starting point is 01:06:39 when they were just, they were printing money. Yeah. And the Arizona Republic owned a ranch. I've never forgotten that. Oh, away by that, because they just didn't know what to do
Starting point is 01:06:50 with all the money back then. I mean, your newspaper, your Sunday paper was like a phone book when it came to you. It was so thick. I delivered them. And what's interesting, what's interesting,
Starting point is 01:07:01 I get the Frederick News Post. I get it digitally. okay, I don't get any papers delivered to me anymore. But on Thanksgiving, the day after Thanksgiving, they delivered the Friday paper, and it was thick. And I had, I've been out of the inner workings of the business so long. I forgot that the day after Thanksgiving is the biggest paper of the year. Yeah. It's Black Friday.
Starting point is 01:07:28 They have all the inserts. Right. All the advert. So that's the only paper that the news posts. delivers, you know, to everyone, digital or not, that Friday, and it was big, it was thick, you know, and it was full of inserts and ads and all kinds of stuff. That's the way the Sunday paper used to be all the time. It took you all day to read the Sunday paper.
Starting point is 01:07:52 The inserts were the biggest pain in the ass when you were a delivery boy like I was. I mean, because Sunday mornings you had to get to where your papers got dropped off, much earlier, and then you had to go through and take the whole big pile of inserts and put them in yourself. They didn't come inserted. You had to do the insert yourself. And then the paper, the post was so thick with inserts. And you'd have your push cart and the thing would be filled to the top. And on Sundays, you'd have to go back and fill that, you know, that push cart back up because you couldn't fit all the papers on it. And the other thing I remember about those newspaper delivery days is on cold mornings when you put your hands in between the newspaper because the ink and the warm ink that from a few hours ago would actually warm your hands. That was back when we couldn't afford gloves back in the day.
Starting point is 01:08:55 You had it rough. Rougher than you know. All right, let's get your Super Bowl pick and finish. up the show after these words from a few of our sponsors. Well, some things may change, but not Shelley's backroom, baby. You got it.
Starting point is 01:10:40 Shelly's back room at 1331 F Street is an anchor in your life. It will keep you anchored. If you make Shelley's back room part of your regular D.C. visits, part of your regular DC social activities. It will be there tomorrow. It will be there next week. It will be there next year, just like it's been for over 20 years. Okay. And it's consistently excellent in everything they do. Their food menu, their cigar menu, their drink menu, you know, which you can find online at shellacebackroom.com. And today, since it's Thursday, I'm going to give you the Shelley's custom blend cigar.
Starting point is 01:11:29 Oh, I thought we're going to get into some of the heat. Okay. No. No. The Shelley's cigar blend fact is, do you know how the word close, the thing, close but no cigar started? I don't know how it got started. How did it get started? But you're familiar with it, right?
Starting point is 01:11:46 Very. Yes. Close but no cigar. Yeah. Back in the 1900. On the counts in horseshoes. Okay. One of the top prizes.
Starting point is 01:11:55 you could win in a carnival was a cigar. You know, you didn't get a stuffed animal. He'd win a cigar. Okay? And if you didn't win, the carnival barker would say, well, close, but no cigar. Got it. And that's how that got started. God.
Starting point is 01:12:13 That's all, and there's always cigars at Shelley's, no matter how close or far away you are, Shelly's Backroom at shelley's backroom.com. We got to get your Super Bowl pick in a moment, but there's some NFL news. The Australia game next year, the two teams playing in it have been announced. Now, no date on this game yet, but it's going to be the 49ers and Rams in the first ever game in Melbourne, Australia. So two NFC West teams, a division matchup in the first ever game. in Australia. I guessed that it wasn't a guess. I mean, it seemed obvious
Starting point is 01:12:57 that it had to be two West Coast teams. You're not going to make somebody travel from the East Coast to Melbourne. I've done that trip, Tommy. I've done it to Sydney. You have two. It's a 24 hour door-to-door trip when you're flying from the East Coast. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:13:13 You know, it's the six, you know, basically six to L.A. And then it's 14, 15, with a layover. Layover, and then a 14 to 15-hour flight. And then by the time you get to wherever you're going and you've gotten your luggage and running the car,
Starting point is 01:13:29 it's 24 hours. It's a long trip. It's worth it, though. Australia's great. Rams 49ers is the Australia game. A lot of international games. Next year. I mean, that's a big, a bit of a reach, I think,
Starting point is 01:13:44 Australia for the NFL. I understand the whole Europe and South America infatuation. when Australia is literally on the other side of the world. The Rams are going to serve as the home team for this game. That means the 49ers, one of their true road games won't be a true road game. It's kind of an advantage to only play seven road games next year instead of eight. I think Minnesota had that a couple of times this year when they stayed over Ireland
Starting point is 01:14:17 and then they played the London game the next week. It's interesting. It's appropriate because the Rams don't really have much of a fan base from what I gather. You know what? It's true. And I think it's one of the reasons the Chargers played the Brazil game last year against the Chiefs in a division matchup as the home team. Because it's really, look, when you're playing the Chiefs at home and if you're the Rams playing the 49ers at home,
Starting point is 01:14:44 you sell a lot of tickets because those fan bases. I mean, every time the Rams play the 49ers at some. So-fi, it's a home game for the 49ers, it seems like. Right. All right. Let's get your Super Bowl pick, which is brought to you today by MyBooky. Go to MyBooky.com or MyBooky.orgie. A.G.
Starting point is 01:15:04 Use my promo code. DC Reload. And they'll give you a 50% cash bonus. Right now, once again, they're the only spot I can see offering the Patriots at plus five.
Starting point is 01:15:32 Plus five minus 110 people. I mean, that's a good number for the Super Bowl right now if you want to bet the underdog. Mybooky.ag, mybooky.com. Use my promo code. DC Reload. Who are you picking in the Super Bowl? give me the final score and maybe, you know, something that you think you're going to see Sunday between the Patriots and the Seahawks. Well, I picked the Seahawks at the beginning of the playoffs to win the Super Bowl.
Starting point is 01:16:02 You did, right. And I'm feeling pretty good about that pick. I like Seattle and a 24 to 10 beat down of the Patriots. My side note would be, I think this is a three turnover day for Drake May. I don't know if they'll come and fumbles or interceptions, but it's going to be a rough day for the young quarterback. It's a good defense they're facing, but the other MVP contender, Matt Stafford,
Starting point is 01:16:32 tore up that defense in the NFC championship game. But you don't think Drake May will do it. All right. No. 24 to 10. I wanted to tell you that, you know, I've been doing Super Bowl trivia this week on the radio show. and of course I always think about
Starting point is 01:16:51 when we started doing that together and because the station was basically not in favor of any sort of legitimate prize we just offered our own cash out of pocket and we did have one person win it one year but man did you sweat those days out and I did the math it was back of the envelope math it may not be perfect
Starting point is 01:17:14 but I think I've been doing it for 15 years the Super Bowl trivia thing. You and I started together in 2009, and I think it was like the second year we were doing the show. We started the Super Bowl trivia, something like that. And so it's been 15 years. And I think there were four winners. I think you and I had two winners.
Starting point is 01:17:35 And the last two years, there have been winners. And the reason for that is it's just so much easier in 30 seconds to look up the answers. and with AI helping out, it's just easy. But nobody's won yet, and I've had a couple of people get to that level three question. All right, anything else? I got nothing else for you, boss. Enjoy the Super Bowl. You too, champ.
Starting point is 01:18:06 That's it for the day back tomorrow. Jake Rudin will join me on our final Football Friday of the season.
