Starting point is 00:00:02 You don't want it. You don't need it. But you're going to get it anyway. The Kevin Chean Show. Here's Kevin. The show today on this Saturday, September 13th, and it will be a quick one, is presented, as always, by Window Nation. 86690 Nation, window.com if you need new windows. Jake Rudin will be on the show, albeit briefly.
Starting point is 00:00:27 I'll explain what that means when he joins me next segment. smell test in the final segment of the show. O and three last night. And none of the games were even close. So if you didn't get my tweet with the three selections last night, and I sent that out late yesterday afternoon, be thankful. I'm back on the horse today with seven college picks and another four for tomorrow. So there was some news late yesterday made by Grant Paulson.
Starting point is 00:01:00 1067 the fan. He mentioned on his show that Jaden Daniels had an MRI on his knee yesterday. Now, as of this morning, Saturday morning, no other reporting on it, but stay tuned. Jaden was visibly limping after being tackled in the open field in the fourth quarter on that drive that made it 27 to 18. It looked like it was an ankle to me. The replay showed him rolling his left ankle. So the MRI on his knee, hearing that was a bit of a surprise, it may have been from a different moment in the game, but it's also very possible the ankle and the knee were affected on the same play. I had Ben Standing on the radio show yesterday, and he did say that Jaden was visibly limping around the locker room after the game.
Starting point is 00:01:52 You know, on the ankle, if it's a high ankle sprain, they can be problematic, like long-term problematic. but it depends on the severity and if it is an actual high ankle sprain. As far as the knee goes, I mean, keep an eye on the shafters of the world today and tomorrow. I guarantee you they're digging into this based on what Grant said on his show. Now, Grant, and I know Grant very well, and I communicated with him after I saw this yesterday, he made it very clear on his radio show that he was not firm on this. He wasn't reporting it.
Starting point is 00:02:30 And when Grant's had stuff, he's reported it. He's said, I've got sources telling me this. He said on his radio show that he had heard that Jaden Daniels had an MRI. So we'll see. Quinn doesn't speak until Monday at 3.30. I would think if Jaden had an MRI on his knee yesterday, that we're going to hear something before Quinn speaks. Monday at 3.30. I think everybody locally and nationally are digging into this. And as of 10 a.m., the recording
Starting point is 00:03:03 of this podcast on Saturday morning, the only information out there is grants. I am taking it very seriously and believe that there's probably something to this. We'll see. By the way, if he did have an MRI, it doesn't mean the results will be bad. Speaking of Jaden Daniels, I had him on my game takes things that I did not like list from the game the other night. I didn't think he played well,
Starting point is 00:03:36 but I also said very emphatically that I did not think he was anywhere near the biggest problem from the game on Thursday night. I still feel that way after watching a lot of the all 22 very early this morning and focusing a lot on James
Starting point is 00:03:52 Aiden Daniels. By the way, I did put out, if you missed it, a post-game podcast. It was out very early, like 1.32 a.m. on Friday morning after the game on Thursday night. And I had my full game-take segment. Much of what I said on that show is still the way I feel even a day and a half later. but, but I'll be even more critical in this opening segment of the show coming up of Jaden's performance than I was the other night. I did not grade him the other night. I forgot to give a grade on Jaden the other night on the podcast. I will grade him here in this opening segment. That's coming up in a few minutes.
Starting point is 00:04:38 But I did want to read a few tweets and emails first. This from Greg. Greg writes, Kevin. The way you described feeling watching Russ Wilson last week that he's done is exactly how I felt watching Latimore last night. Do you share that concern? And if so, is there a solution? So I am concerned about Latimore's play, no doubt about it. But not in the same way that I described Russell Wilson.
Starting point is 00:05:09 I am not ready to say Latimore is done. Russell Wilson's about to turn 37 years old. The primary reason that I would not give up on Latimore quite yet is I think we have to take into consideration or keep in consideration if you've thought about this already, and we've talked about this before, that the defensive scheme, the play calling, could be a part of the defensive performance overall, not just Thursday night, but last year. You know, Lattimore had a bad game, no doubt, really bad the other night. Also, did you catch that he complained a bit after the game to Ben Standing? Essentially implying that, you know, the Packers weren't doing anything that complex. They were just running motions and man-beaters, and he essentially said we didn't adjust.
Starting point is 00:06:08 Bit of a shot at the coaching staff. Now, you know, if you watch the game the other night, you saw what they were doing, especially early with guys like Wix. They were running him in motion. And they do that, first of all, to identify man coverage versus zone. You know, if you get a corner chasing the motion, moving with the motion from one side of the field to the other, it's more likely than not man coverage. But the Packers also clearly knew that Washington wasn't going to.
Starting point is 00:06:42 to switch, which is the basketball term, or pass off receivers. So instead of following, you know, number 13 wicks in motion, Latimore is going to pass them off to somebody else and then check somebody else, you know, in man coverage when they were in man coverage. And Green Bay saw that Washington wasn't going to switch or pass off the receivers, and they took advantage of it with Latimore in particular, because Latimore is much better when he can get his hands on you at the line of scrimmage. And when guys are in motion, much harder to get hands on a receiver.
Starting point is 00:07:22 So they didn't pass off. They didn't switch. They burned Latimore. They went after him. They targeted him with that. Now, I think they did come back to some switching, some passing off a little bit later in the game. So I think they did adjust at least on a few plays that I saw. saw. But back to Greg, your tweet, I'm not confident in Latimore right now either. Of course not.
Starting point is 00:07:50 But I'm also skeptical about some of the other things related to the defense, scheme, play, calling, et cetera. We've talked about this all off season long. This is a big year for Joe Whit Jr. The defense wasn't good last year, and it was bad the other night. The Packers are not the Giants. We learned that from Thursday night's game. You know, some of the proclamations and declarations made after one game, you know, about the defense and it was going to be a strength, and my God, the secondaries lights out. We heard that going through training camp.
Starting point is 00:08:26 The secondary had a dreadful game. Look, there are 15 more games to go. Latimore is getting paid, by the way, regardless of scheme to cover guys. Okay, that's his number one. job and why he's being paid 20 plus million a year. So you can imply all you want, Lattimore, cover your man, okay, cover your guy, which you did not do, whether they were using motions and man beaters to take advantage of it. You're getting paid a lot of money to cover guys more than anything else. So it's time you start covering guys. With that said, two things can be true simultaneously.
Starting point is 00:09:08 You know, he may not be playing well. It doesn't appear that he is. And the scheme may not be great. The play calling may not be great either. This from Maine 12. Kevin, funny to hear you say that Daniels takes no blame for the ass-wipping the other night. I agree with you, but Russell Wilson had the same game against us, and you called him a backup quarterback with a pressure rate.
Starting point is 00:09:38 And they couldn't run the ball either, yet he had a slightly better QBR than JD. First of all, Maine 12. I didn't say that Daniels didn't deserve some of the blame the other night. I just said that there were other issues that were higher up on the list, that he was nowhere near the primary reason they lost. And I still believe that to be true. But as far as the Russell Wilson comment goes, You can't be serious, as John McEnroe once said.
Starting point is 00:10:11 Are you implying that I should have said after the game on Thursday night or right now that because I believe that Russell Wilson at soon to be 37 years old is now more of an NFL backup quarterback, that because his QBR was slightly better than Jaden's, that Jaden too should be an NFL backup quarterback. Are you kidding me? It was one game. He's played 22 now as a pro.
Starting point is 00:10:42 19 to 20 of the 22 have been A to A plus games. You know, all of these great quarterbacks in their early years have moments where, uh-oh, he didn't look like he's looked for the last 10 games. This could be a sign of something. They figured him out. You know, go back to, and I did this for the purpose of responding to this tweet, Joe Burroughs' second year, the season he led Cincinnati to the Super Bowl. Week two of that season, they're playing the Bears, dreadful game, three picks, five sacks,
Starting point is 00:11:25 horrible loss. And by the way, to a team nowhere near as good as the Packers are right now. The best quarterbacks in the sport have occasional bad nights, rough games, especially when they are playing outstanding defensive teams on short weeks. Russell Wilson played the way he played on Sunday against a worse defense than the one Jaden faced on Thursday night. Look, nothing about your tweet on Main 12. is apples to apples. There's no possible way you will get me after one bad game to talk about him as perhaps a backup quarterback in the NFL.
Starting point is 00:12:14 It continues with Jaden. This from Sam. Kevin, still think Jaden's an elite quarterback? I do, Sam. This from Carl J. Kevin, you sure Jaden's top five? He looked like a scared bottom five QB last night. I think. I think the league figured some things out in the off season. Come on, people. Come on. It's the NFL. We talk about this every year. Weekly assertions are so fleeting.
Starting point is 00:12:50 And when you have a body of work like the one he put together over 20 games last year, you don't write them off after one bad game. Most of you are not doing that. okay and i'm not creating straw man here because there were several of these tweets several people in panic mode which by the way has become commonplace for most fan bases in sports you know great player plays poorly oh my god what was i thinking elevating him to greatness did you see the way he played um he's played literally in 22 games maybe two games three times that weren't A-level games.
Starting point is 00:13:36 You know, and for those that said, that's two games in a row now, he wasn't very good. He was pretty good against the Giants. He just wasn't great like he was in so many games last year. The expectation bar is really high with him. I gave him a B-plus in that game last week. I will give you my grade for him from Thursday night here in a moment. But look, as long as he's healthy, he's going to be fine.
Starting point is 00:14:04 And fingers crossed on the healthy part. A real quick FYI before I get to some of what I saw on the All-22 from Thursday night's game, Steve Souter is going to be on this show with me Monday, not to talk about Maryland football, but to do a film breakdown of the Packers Skins game from Thursday night. Steve is an excellent analyst with Johnny Huffalo. holiday on Maryland football. Steve, one of the all-time great returners in ACCC history, NCAA history, actually, from the early Ralph Regian teams. I've had Steve on the show many times to talk Maryland football, and I've always been very, very impressed. He's very analytical. He really
Starting point is 00:14:49 knows the game. And I had somebody reach out to me to say, you know, Steve's a big Washington fan, or he has been for much of his life, and he's really good. film breakdown. And so since we don't have Cooley on a regular basis, although I did talk to Chris the other night, and he said he was going to watch the Packers Skins game on Thursday night. I have not talked to him since. And we'll get Chris on the show to talk about the team, you know, periodically. But Steve's going to give it a shot on Monday show breaking down the film of Thursday night's game. We'll see how it goes. But I like Steve a lot. I think he's really smart. And I think he really knows ball.
Starting point is 00:15:33 And so somebody suggested this to me, and we're going to see how it works out. That'll be on Monday's show. All right, some of my own all 22 observations. Here we go. Number one, Green Bay was the much better team the other night. We knew it watching the game. You watch it again. It's just as clear.
Starting point is 00:15:54 I thought also they were the better coach team on Thursday night. They beat up and they bullied Washington, especially in the trenches, both sides of the ball. They look legit awesome on defense. I know it's early, but Parsons, we know, is an elite game-wrecking pass rusher. And then to have guys like Rashon Gary and Lucas Van Ness and Cooper and Walker and Wyatt, that defense looks like the real deal. Time will tell, and they've got to stay healthy too. but they were awesome against Washington, both live and then watching the game again,
Starting point is 00:16:33 and they did the same thing to Detroit in week one. I came away from this game after watching it again with two, let's just say, long-term concerns, at least medium-length concerns. Number one is health. Losing wise is a big deal, especially to their effort to stop the run. this year. He was one of the reasons they went out and signed him. He's done for the year with the quad injury. And then losing Echler is a big deal. Austin Echler, we knew more likely than not, wouldn't play 17 games, but to lose him after two sucks. He is a big time weapon, and he is a
Starting point is 00:17:15 high IQ player. Other injuries like the Bates injury, and of course the Jaden fingers crossed on that one. So health is kind of a long-term, you know, a medium-to-long-term concern. The other one, too, especially after watching a lot of this game again, I have a long-term concern about the offensive line. Now, they're going to get Sam Cosmi back and that'll help. But there are some issues along that offensive line. And I think some of these issues may dictate some changes sooner rather than later. I'll get to that in a moment.
Starting point is 00:17:53 The number one concern specific to the game is something I did mention. I didn't like the offensive plan at all. I just think when it becomes clear that throwing the ball isn't going to work the way you thought it was going to work, you should have run the ball more. That's easy to say from this seat. They had 48 called pass plays, 12 running plays to running backs. Now, no John Bates. may have been part of the reason they lost him early and he's their best blocking tight end.
Starting point is 00:18:25 And it forced them to, you know, stay in 11 personnel rather than 12 personnel to try to run the football. It's kind of an indictment on Senate at this point that he had three snaps after Bates had just nine. Certainly, Senate as a second round pick in year two, you'd like to think that they could put him into the game after losing John Bates and get, you know, performance that, you know, is backup level performance. They didn't even try it with him. Three snaps. He did have a catch in one of those three snaps. But not having Bates may have been their reason for not trying to run the ball more, but I think they needed to punch back with old Bill.
Starting point is 00:19:09 I would have given Bill more carries. The four carries for 17 yards were promising. He looked quick. He has good vision. And even if they were being dominated up front, just taking the pressure off Jaden and the offensive line with just more attempts. I would have tried it. Yeah, that was coming out of the game.
Starting point is 00:19:35 I felt that that was a big issue in the game. And then after watching it again, I can't believe that they didn't give it more of a try. But again, the no-bates thing would have been the reason. So number two on sort of the takeaways after watching. the All-22 after just emphasizing what I emphasized the other night. They got beat by a better team. It was obvious. The Packers' defense is really good and really fast. By the way, their secondary was supposed to be the weakness of that defense, which makes it a little bit more concerning, too, about the receiver situation on Thursday night.
Starting point is 00:20:12 All right, Jaden. So we know a few things more about some of the advance numbers that I did not have when I did the postgame podcast after the game on Thursday night. He was pressured on 46% of his dropbacks, the most of his pro career. 26 total pressures, 26, 19 hurries, four sacks. He was under siege for the majority of the game, but not on every snap. More on that coming up in a second. The 230 total yards for Washington's offense, the fewest of any game he's played in so far in the NFL. It was not a good night for the offensive line. It really wasn't. In particular, rookie Josh Connerly Jr.
Starting point is 00:21:02 He allowed nine pressures. That was the worst of any of the O-Linemen. Nick Allegretti, second with six pressures allowed. And that's where I wanted to just focus in a little bit on the longer, medium to longer-term concerned with the offensive line before Cosmy gets back. Both of those guys struggled big time. Connerly Jr. struggled in the opener, too. Now, keep in mind, they've played two really good defensive fronts. You know, they had Abdul Carter and Dexter Lawrence in the opener, and they had, you know, Micah Parsons and company to deal with on Thursday night.
Starting point is 00:21:40 With that said, though, I think Connerly Jr. and Allegretti on the same right side, together next to each other. It's a bit of a risk. I think they should consider Andrew Wiley, a veteran back at right tackle, and give Connerly, Jr. a bit of a break, you know? And yeah, I would bet that they've considered that. And we'll see.
Starting point is 00:22:05 They've got a long, you know, week plus before the Raiders come to town. But I think they should consider Andrew Wiley for Connerly, Jr. He is struggling like every young, tackle does more you know most of them anyway um now after watching the all 22 a bit and focusing a lot on jaden a few things were somewhat different than i thought in the immediacy of of the post game first you know green bay played a bit more man coverage at times than i thought you know i thought it was exclusive to zone on every snap or most snaps um it wasn't there was some man coverage mixed in at times. And they did blitz, not a lot, 12 times in the 48 called pass plays. It was a lot of
Starting point is 00:22:54 four-man rush. And, you know, like I said the other night, it was similar to the Thursday night game against Philadelphia last year with Vic Fangio. If you can rush four and keep seven in coverage, you are ahead of the game, especially if your players are good and your scheme is good. And Green Bay didn't blitz a lot, 12 times total. And Jaden was a disaster on the 12 blitzes. I actually have some data here. Blitz 12 times. He was three of ten. Career worst against the Blitz.
Starting point is 00:23:28 But, you know, he, look, he was under siege for much of the night. With that said, there were times when he had time to throw the ball. And I said the other night, I didn't think he was. I didn't think he was confused as much as he was contained. The Packers did a great job of not letting him run or using their contained rush and their team speed to get to him when he did try to run. I still don't think he was confused, but I do think in watching it back again that he was a bit skittish. The reason I say that is he was way too quick throwing to the checkdown on a few occasions. and I've got a couple of examples.
Starting point is 00:24:16 There were plays there, occasionally, not consistently, to be had. The worst miss, and I don't know why he didn't throw this football, it's the third drive of the first half. It's second and ten, their own 45-yard line, and he throws a checkdown to Debo Samuel, and it's a quick checkdown. Terry wins big. He wins big time. Man coverage on the outside on Terry.
Starting point is 00:24:46 It looks like the safety is going to shade in Terry's direction. That may have been why he didn't consider Terry, but the safety ends up walking up to the line of scrimmage. And Terry runs a great comeback, sideline comeback route, and he's got clearance. You know, Terry does not consistently get great separation, but he did on this play, and the ball should have been out,
Starting point is 00:25:09 and it would have been 15 plus yards, because Terry would have caught it, turned and the defender still wouldn't have been there and he could have made, you know, some yards after the catch. I'm not sure why he didn't throw it. It was one of the times during this game where he had a clean pocket and it should have been out and it should have been out on time and instead he immediately wanted to get rid of the ball on the checkdown. And that was the third series of the game. So I don't know, it's possible that the game plan really was. We're going to get the ball out quickly. We don't think we're going to be able to protect.
Starting point is 00:25:42 very well, which would have been why I would have tried to run the ball a little bit more. We're going to get it out and we're going to let our players, the Debo's and the Zaks and the Terries and the Noah's and everybody else. We're going to let them try to make yards after the catch. And that just may have been Jaden's mindset because that was the game plan. But there was, we've seen him make that throw over and over again. And Terry won big. I don't know why he didn't throw it. And then there was a second and six in the third quarter. This was versus zone coverage.
Starting point is 00:26:24 Terry does a great job of working his way as they flood the zone, and he's finding that spot. And Jaden had time, and again, he goes quickly to the checkdown, which is Debo again. I think, again, could have been skittish. I'm considering that, that he could have been skittish. He went to the checkdown too early on multiple occasions. Now, the pass rush was an issue much of the night, as was receivers getting open much of the night. But not the entire night.
Starting point is 00:27:01 There were plays. I just gave you two examples and a few others, which I think were a little bit more, you know, I'm not entirely sure that he should have thrown it there, but I think he should have thrown it there. I also think just the play calling in general. There were a couple of plays. The fourth and four, when they had one last chance with the ball, and they went for it deep in their own territory in the fourth quarter,
Starting point is 00:27:26 not deep deep in their own territory. And they throw a slant to the rookie lane who's covered. They're sitting on it. Even if he catches it, it's probably three yards, not four. I hated that call. And by the way, that was an example of Green Bay playing man coverage. And there's, you know, they're essentially running zone beaters, not that a slants a zone beater necessarily, but on the other side.
Starting point is 00:27:52 I didn't love the way the game was called. I think Jaden had some opportunities, but I think he may have been a bit skittish, or I think the game plan was, look, this team's really good up front. We're going to have an issue. protecting, we believe. It's probably one of the reasons that when Echler went out, it was mostly McNichols because they trusted him more in Passpro than they did the rookie. But there were some opportunities. And maybe it was just, Jaden, get it out and don't be afraid to get to the checkdown immediately. Because by the way, we've got good checkdown receivers. We've got Debo. We've got
Starting point is 00:28:31 Echler. We can make some plays after hitting the checkdown. And by the way, some of those plays He's got five, six, seven yards. Yeah. So something I noticed more in watching the game, Jaden in this game was no better than a C. C at best in this game. Now, he made some really good throws. He made a couple of really tight window.
Starting point is 00:29:00 You know, no separation throws to Ertz to Terry. You know, the only wide open receiver that he through to, Terry was wide open on the play that I described before, was the well-designed touchdown pass to Ertz. You know, they got the flow going one way. They got a wheel route from Echler taking defenders out of an area where Ertz comes wide open, and then Ertz makes a really good run-after catch for all you people out there that said, you know, Zach Ertz gets no yak.
Starting point is 00:29:31 A couple of other things out of watching this game. I said Sunday that the game against New York was an excellent tackling game against a team that was inept offensively, but I also pointed out specifically that I thought the secondary tackled well. Thursday night was not the same. It was a bad coverage game. It was a bad tackling game for the DBs. I can't imagine that the film for the team didn't reveal a horrendous game for almost. everybody in the secondary. Maybe Trey Amos. Maybe Trey Amos was spared. But everybody else,
Starting point is 00:30:11 I thought, was terrible. Tackling wasn't great. It was an abomination for the secondary. And look, they may not have been schemed up or play called correctly either, because there were people wide the blank open. I mean, Tucker Kraft, my God, the amount of space between him and the closest defender on some of those catches. Another takeaway after watching it again, I'm a Dorrance Armstrong fan. I think his versatility is huge for this team. And I think that he has the ability to rush the passer.
Starting point is 00:30:52 I also think he's got the ability to stop the run. I think he also has the ability to step back and cover. The film, if you will, because I went back and watched him because he essentially was not, you know, in the stat column. I love Duran Payne. I'd like to see him put two games back to back, you know, that are solid because he was a monster on Sunday against the Giants. And the bottom line is he was a non-factor on Thursday night. I mean, he had maybe two good plays. He got held once, I think.
Starting point is 00:31:28 I think one of them wasn't called. Maybe twice he got held. He had one good pass rush, maybe two. He was not a factor in this game, though, at all, despite playing the most snaps of anybody on the D-line. I don't know, maybe D-Rond can't go two games that many snaps and four nights. I don't know. He was not good, and I want him to be good.
Starting point is 00:31:53 I watch him live when I'm watching the game. I'm always trying to pay attention. to what 94 is doing. And last year, that's why I would say, God, he got doubled, but still, you know, great players take doubles and still make plays. Lastly, and this actually has nothing to do with the All-22, I still don't know what in God's name Dan Quinn was thinking at the end of the first half. Now, he did have an explanation after the game, and it was essentially we were trying to get to our field goal mark, which we had at 58 yards, I'm sorry, but when you take over the football down 14 to 3 with two minutes
Starting point is 00:32:35 and two seconds to go, and you are starting that drive at your own, you know, your own 48-yard line, okay? Their own 48-yard line, you're starting that drive. You cannot, I'm sorry, their own 43-yard line, my fault. When you take over two minutes and two seconds, three-timeout, Down 14 to 3 at your own 43 yard line, you can't be thinking, let's try to get the ball to the 40 so that we can kick a 58-yard field goal and leave no time for the opponent to score. Because we're also getting the ball to start the third quarter. No, you've got to think touchdown. You've got to think good field goal range, worst case. You had plenty of time. You've been aggressive. This game, the best drive you had had in the game was the drive before this one.
Starting point is 00:33:27 They had driven it into field goal range and Matt game made a 51-yarder. That was a drive they started from their own 35-yard line, and it was nine plays, 37 yards, took three and a half minutes off the clock. So they had their most success offensively on the drive before. It was so conservative and so out of character. I said the other night that the only explanation for it is they just didn't feel good about the offense and the ability to go get a touchdown or even to go get good field goal range and they didn't want to give the ball back to Green Bay and be down 21 to 3 or 17 to 3 at
Starting point is 00:34:06 halftime they wanted to regroup. Now, that would be tough to say. We didn't have any confidence. We needed to get into the locker room and regroup. So we were just looking to burn the clock and kick a long field goal. That's what they did. They burned the clock and they kicked a long 58-yard field. that they missed, and they still left too much time on the clock for Green Bay.
Starting point is 00:34:29 I just was, you know, super surprised that it was approached that way, really surprised that it was approached that way, because they've been so aggressive as a coaching staff. They were not aggressive there. They were super conservative. Did not use any of their three remaining timeouts. All right. Jay Gruden next, after these words from a few. few of our sponsors.

Joining me right now, the former head coach of the Washington Redskins, Jay Gruden. Jay will be with me every Friday during football season in this case on Saturday morning to talk not only about Washington's upcoming game, but in this case, I have him on a day and a half after the game. We get a chance to get his immediate reaction
Starting point is 00:38:00 to what was a bit of a one-sided beatdown on Thursday night, the 27 to 18 loss to Green Bay. So let's start with what did you think? Yeah, it wasn't good. You know, anytime you look at the stat sheet, you see Jaden with 40 plus pass attempts and only about seven rushing attempts for the team. It's not going to be good.
Starting point is 00:38:21 You know what? that's a great place to start. Tell me what you thought of Cliff Kingsbury's game, the game that he called. Well, I mean, it's easy to say. It wasn't very good now. They were five for three for 16 on third down. I mean, there's one for three on fourth down. The critical situation is a critical play they did not make.
Starting point is 00:38:44 And, you know, they didn't really give Jade a chance to really succeed. It was tough game. You know, the protection wasn't very good. good. The run game was awful. And it's tough to get a rhythm going as a play caller when you can't really run the ball, it takes away your play action and your shot plays. And then you become one dimensional. It's tough for any coordinator. And it just was that type of night. The score was the game felt out of control, but the score was never out of control until the very end. And you hit on it, and I talked about this, the running backs in the game had 12 carries. There were 48
Starting point is 00:39:21 called pass plays in the game. Do you think that he should have given the run game more of an opportunity? Yeah, you have to, especially on the road. You know, he control the clock a little bit, but I don't know if he had confidence in that front for Green Bay. You know, I think maybe he tried a couple early and saw there was no movement, so he put the ball in Jaden fans, which you can't argue that point. But, yeah, you just have to take the pressure off Jaden.
Starting point is 00:39:50 and he can't drop back and throw it because the protection is not good enough. You know, the offensive line is not good enough to protect against any team, let alone the Packers and Micah and all those guys. So, yeah, you have to offset it with some run plays. Even if some quarterback design runs, anything to just try to get the change moving another way. Yeah, you know, the game last night was really kind of a first, maybe the Philly game on the road last year on Thursday night, where, you know, the protection wasn't good, the running game wasn't there,
Starting point is 00:40:19 but Jaden typically has put on a cape and become Superman and just he's made plays. He didn't make any last night, really. Why was that? You know, I don't know. I think Green Bay did a really good job with their rush integrity, and they did a great job in a secondary. You know, they really clamped down the receivers. Not a lot of, not a lot of separation for the receiving core.
Starting point is 00:40:44 You know, I was a little disappointing. So I don't know. I got to go back and watch a film and look at the past game. concept, see what happened there. But it just to me looking at it on TV on this Amazon crap, it just didn't look like he had anywhere to go running lanes or guys that were creating separation on the passing game. So they just bottled up the offense.
Starting point is 00:41:03 You know, a short week, it's tough, it's on the road. It's never easy to come up with a great game plan on a Thursday night on the road, especially gets a really good defense. So let's just chalk that up to early in the season Thursday night games are never really good. They played mostly zone, it appeared, in watching it on TV, Green Bay did. Doesn't that more often than not at least lead to, hey, we can get the ball out of his hands quickly on something super short? Yeah, a lot of times you can hit a flat router or stick, perhaps some thick flat, quick combinations and try to get, you know, sometimes if you can't run the ball, there's some elements to a quick game that you can get, you know, five or six yards on first down, which opens up play action and other things you can do. So they just really couldn't get anything going.
Starting point is 00:41:48 It was really odd to see the lack of production on offense and separation from the receivers. And, you know, you think you get Terry McCorn something on a plan or a quickout or something like that. But nothing was there for him. Nothing was really happening. Yeah, that's what it looked like. It looked like he didn't have anywhere to go with it. And then when he was looking to try to make a play, there wouldn't anywhere to go either. I mean, I guess you just chalk it up.
Starting point is 00:42:15 Like you said, sure. turn around, but an excellent defensive football team that they faced last night. Yeah, for sure. You know, you just got to be concerned moving forward about this off-up the line play. I don't really see a lot of movement, a lot of physicality with them. You know, they've shuffled so many parts. You know, the, you know, Tumple coming out, left tackle, and moving Coleman, the left guard, you know, right tackle, left tackle in college. I don't know. It's going to take some time for this offensive line to gel. I don't know what they're going to do about it. They're just not very good right now playing together.
Starting point is 00:42:46 Connerly Jr. really struggled. Would you consider moving Wiley to right tackle, which is where he's played, and get a veteran in there? I thought Wiley did a pretty good job last year, really. I don't know why the sudden change, but I know Connolly's got probably more talent, physical talent than Wiley. But Wiley's, I think he's better outside than he is inside. He's not a very physical guy to play guard for me, but I would look to do that because he struggled against the Giants, too. I wouldn't like he had a perfect game against a giant.
Starting point is 00:43:19 But he's played two really good defenses I get it, but there's other defensive evidence that can rush. I just don't know if he's ready for right tackle it. I think it would be some time. On a night like last night when you've been the play caller and you had a plan, and let's just say it was kind of a limited plan because of the turnaround, but when you have a plan and nothing's working, how much do you change in the midst of the game, adjust as fans say,
Starting point is 00:43:46 how about the adjustments? Where are the adjustments? Like how hard is it? How easy is it? What's the process of saying nothing we're doing, working, we got to change everything. It's hard. You know, the biggest thing you've got to try to figure out a way to try to get some chunk
Starting point is 00:44:03 play somehow, some way. And that's the biggest issue you have because, obviously, without the running game and the pass protection is not very good. You've got to figure out a way to get Jaden outside the pocket, try to get some deep three-level throws, something like that. When we beat Seattle, we had no running game, and we couldn't throw the ball, couldn't protect, you know, we hit a chunk play to Josh Doxner, a... Brian quick or something like that.
Starting point is 00:44:26 Tread quick. It's very, very difficult. That's the most important thing you try to do. So, well, junk plays take a long time. We can't protect. So how can we do it? You have to try to get some max protection, get them outside the pocket. And I think, moving forward, I'd like to see them,
Starting point is 00:44:41 try to get Jaden outside of the pocket on some bootlegs and things of that nature, so he can see and then use his legs as athleticism, not so much being on the pocket on every dropback. That's tough on any quarterback. We haven't had much to, you know, constructively critique when it's come to Jaden Daniels over his first now 22 games, if you include the playoff games. But last year, I remember mentioning this to you. And then his quarterback coach, the guy that works with him out in California came on and said that he, in some of the zone reads,
Starting point is 00:45:13 he's not making consistently good decisions. There was one in the giant game where he kept it where it looked like the end was playing him. Last night, the end crashed. and he should have pulled it, it looked like. Have you noticed that again this year? Yeah, a couple times. Those things are hard, man. You've got to get the snap. You've got to ride the back of the belly,
Starting point is 00:45:35 and your eyes are out there, that defensive end. And they get tricky, and he's got such great athleticism sometimes when he keeps it. He thinks he can outrun a guy, even if he's playing the zone. Even if he's playing a quarterback, he can outrun him, and he usually does. But, yeah, that's an issue sometimes. That's such a bang, bang, tight play, man. That's not easy. Jay Gruden, everybody, albeit briefly, as I mentioned in the open to the show.
Starting point is 00:46:00 Yeah, while recording Jay, we had a major power outage, not just in this studio, but in the area. So we were unable to get the rest of the conversation recorded, but I took notes and I have Jay's lock of the week. And I have some of the other things that he talked about. and I'm going to summarize those right now. First of all, with respect to how the defense played on Thursday night, he was really disappointed after the Giant game with coverage specifically. He thought there just wasn't any stickiness to their coverage and their zone coverage, and Green Bay was scheming people up way too easily against that zone coverage.
Starting point is 00:46:49 We talked a little bit about the NFL card this weekend. and he really likes Kansas City to bounce back. That's not his lock of the week. I'll give you that here in a moment. He was very impressed with the Jets' offensive line last week, and he thinks the Jets are going to be better than people think. He doesn't think the 49ers injuries based on their schedule because they can run the ball are going to hurt them that much in the short term.
Starting point is 00:47:18 He thinks Caleb Williams' biggest issue is, Happy feet, doesn't see it, doesn't feel it, and accuracy. What else did he have here? Yeah, that's it. He likes the chiefs to bounce back. I think I mentioned that if I didn't. He likes the chiefs to bounce back. And his lock of the week is Cincinnati at home against Jacksonville,
Starting point is 00:47:50 buying the half point laying the three. He had Carolina last week, which was a loser. I gave Carolina out last week. That was also not a good pick. But Cincinnati minus three is Jay's lock of the week. I apologize for not having the rest of it. Jay's always great, and I love the conversations with him. And we got the gist of how he felt about Washington's game on Thursday night,
Starting point is 00:48:16 minus some of what he said about the defense. But he really likes Green Bay's roster, too. That was the other thing. He said he's very impressed with Green Bay. Really thinks Jordan Love, especially if you can protect him and you can get the play action going with the run game, thinks that he is very high level. All right. Let's finish up the show with the smell test.
Starting point is 00:48:40 We'll do that right after these words from a few of our sponsors. This episode is brought to you by prize picks. Guys, football season is bad. Starting point is 00:49:20 yards for Aaron Jones in part because my guy Paul Chartian out of Minneapolis told me that Jordan Mason was going to be a very big part of Minnesota's rush attack. I cashed on that one. Aaron Jones had 44 yards rushing. I also went over Caleb Williams on passing yards, 218 and a half, and he threw for 210. So I didn't cash on that one, but it's so much fun to play. And that's The example, they give you numbers, stat projections, and you just go more or less. If you get the picks right, you cash in. Washington has dropped now to the 12th favorite to win the Super Bowl.
Starting point is 00:54:02 They were the seventh pick to win the Super Bowl before Thursday night. All right. The smell test got off to a horrendous start last night. Oh, and three. I had UCLA, not even close. Kansas State, sort of close, but not really. And Colorado early in the evening, that did not work out. So if you didn't get those picks via my at-kevin-Shean DC-X account, be thankful. I am 11, 5-1 on the season heading into this weekend. 11, 8, and 1 after last night. But a good weekend last weekend, an exceptional week one.
Starting point is 00:54:44 Let's get after these picks for today. All right. I'm going to start with Miami laying 17 and a half against USF. So USF beat Boise, a ranked team to open the season. They beat Florida last week, number 13 in the country. And now they're ranked playing Miami. And they're getting 17 and a half. I know I gave Florida out against USF last week giving a big number.
Starting point is 00:55:12 The fact that USF is getting a big number again to me is fishy. The fact that the public is pounding an underdog, give me the canes minus 17 and a half. The other game that I absolutely love is Florida, after losing the USF, is in Death Valley getting a touchdown against LSU. That seems super short. The public's pounding LSU, and there is super sharp money on the Gators. Give me Florida plus the seven. Oregon scored 69 points in three quarters against Oklahoma State. The public believes you can't make a number high enough to get them off of the ducks.
Starting point is 00:55:56 I'll take Northwestern plus 28 against Oregon today. I had Ohio last week plus three and a half against West Virginia, and they won outright. They're plus 30 against Ohio State today, and that's a big favorite that the average public better likes. I'll take Ohio plus the 30. West Virginia's getting seven after losing to Ohio last week. They're getting a number that seems to be too low for most betters in the backyard brawl against Pitt. I'll take West Virginia plus the seven. There's super sharp money on the Mountaineers as well.
Starting point is 00:56:34 Wyoming plus 24 against Utah. Utah is very good again. God, they are so well-coached. He is one of the best in the country. Utah is one of those big favorites that is one-sided in terms of public action. They're sharp money on Wyoming. I'll take Wyoming plus 24. And then this one is just a cover your eyes, mouth, nose, and just play it. Akron hasn't scored in two games. They're getting 11 against UAB. That number seems very low. most people paying attention. So I will consider it to be low, consider it to be
Starting point is 00:57:12 not a mistake by the odds makers, and take Akron plus the 11. Tomorrow I like the Browns plus 12 at Baltimore in the celebration of 30 years in Baltimore for the Ravens against the Browns, the team
Starting point is 00:57:28 that moved to Baltimore. Flacco's first return in a game against the Ravens as well. Public likes the home team. I don't think they realize how good Cleveland is defensively and how capable they are offensively. I think they're better than people think. I think they're going to be a pesky team for the portion of the season where they've got a veteran quarterback in the game. I like them plus the 12.
Starting point is 00:57:55 This is going to be painful after we watched them last week. But nobody, nobody believes that the Giants have a chance of keeping it close at Dallas. So I'll take the Giants plus the five and a half. The Patriots and the Dolphins struggled to score last week, so I'll go over in their game. The number is 43, so it's a relatively high number given the few points they scored. Miami getting absolutely torched, scored eight in total. New England 13 in a rough game against the Raiders. That number feels like it should be 40 or even like 39 and it's 43 and the public rarely plays
Starting point is 00:58:35 unders, but they love the under in that game. I'll take the over. And the same goes for Cowboys Giants. That number is 44 and a half. After the Giants didn't score a touchdown, they like the under in that. I'll take the over 44 and a half in that game. So, recapping, Miami minus 17 and a half today, along with Florida plus seven, Northwestern plus 28, Ohio plus 30, West Virginia plus seven, Wyoming plus 24, and Akron plus 11. Tomorrow, the Browns plus 12, the Giants plus five and a half, the over in the Patriots Dolphins game, over 43, and the over 44 and a half in the Cowboys Giants game. I will tweet these picks out too before 12 noon for the college picks and before 1 o'clock
Starting point is 00:59:29 tomorrow for the NFL picks. All right, that's it. Back on Monday, enjoy the football.
