The Kevin Sheehan Show - Another Kliff Kliff?
Episode Date: September 10, 2025Kevin responded to an email that pointed out that Kliff Kingsbury's NFL record as a head coach and coordinator is not very good in Thursday night games. Kevin also had thoughts on the Packers after wa...tching their season-opening win over the Lions. Nick Akridge/PFF jumped on to share some of PFF's grades from the Giants' game and he previewed the Green Bay game as well. Kevin finished up the show with what Green Bay coach Matt LaFleur said about Dan Quinn and a very welcome NBA rule change. You don't want it.
You don't need it, but you're going to get it anyway.
The Kevin Chean Show.
Here's Kevin.
One guest on the show today, Nick Ackridge from Pro Football Focus will jump on with me in the next section.
The show's presenting sponsor is always Window Nation.

This from Brad to open up the show.
Brad writes, Kevin, here's another Cliff.
Kingsbury narrative that you can explore and hopefully counter.
His teams don't do well on Thursday nights with a few days to prepare.
The Cardinals were 1 and 3 with him as a head coach on Thursday nights,
and last year the commanders lost to Philadelphia on Thursday night, so he is 1 and 4 overall
on Thursday night football.
Will you please look into this?
Okay, Brad.
I will and I did.
This one's not going to take as long to explain and didn't take that long to research like the other Cliff Kingsbury narrative.
Remember the Cliff Cliff narrative that Cliff's teams in college and in the NFL in Arizona, you know, fell apart.
They fell off a cliff in the latter portions of seasons when really what happened was in college, it
Texas Tech, his teams started seasons with much weaker opponents where they would roll up,
you know, 60, 70, I think in one case, 80 points against the Stephen F. Austin's and
U-TEPs of the world. And then when they got into conference play, much tougher games, you know,
the results changed as they typically do with any team. But what was interesting about going back
and looking at his Texas Tech days is while.
they did lose games towards ends of seasons, it wasn't because of his offense. His offense was
still putting up 40, 50, 60 a game. They just were getting beat 56 to 48 or, you know, 63 to 52.
You know, the old big 12 days with all of those points. And it was this defense that was the
problem in college. And then in the pros, it was.
his injuries, injuries to the quarterback, Kyler Murray, and others.
And then his defense is also in Arizona tended to be the issue later in seasons more so than his offense.
So that one took a little bit more time to research and to debunk.
This one, Brad, much easier.
I went and looked at all the Thursday night games that Cliff coached at Arizona,
and then we know the game that he coached last year.
And here's the bottom line.
The opponents that the Cardinals faced in the four games that he coached on Thursday night football as the head coach of the Arizona Cardinals were excellent.
And then last year's opponent, when he was an offensive coordinator and is still an offensive coordinator in Washington,
was an excellent opponent as well.
You know, it was the Philadelphia Eagles.
In 2019, the Cardinals played on Thursday night, their only Thursday night game.
the year against the 49ers who came into the game undefeated, 7 and 0.
And by the way, they had a chance to win the game.
They lost 28 to 25.
So the Cardinals actually played pretty well against the best team in football that night.
In 2020, they lost on the road at Seattle, 28 to 21.
The Seahawks were really good.
They were six and three coming in to that game.
In 2021, they lost a close game to the Green Bay Packers,
led by MVP Aaron Rogers.
Green Bay was six and one coming into the game.
The Packers won that game 24 to 21.
The Cardinals played well.
And then in 2022, they actually won on Thursday night football,
beating the lowly Saints, 42 to 34.
The Saints were two and five coming into that game.
So in Arizona, they were one and three on Thursday nights,
but they played three excellent teams on Thursday night football and had chances to win those games.
And then, of course, last year, Philadelphia, pretty good team to face on Thursday night.
So yes, one in four as an NFL coach or coordinator, but the four losses were two.
excellent teams and the games were close and his offenses actually performed pretty well in those
games. So Brad, I would not put much, if anything, into the narrative that Cliff's teams don't
perform well on Thursday nights. This from Ravens Zero-Zo, I would imagine that is Ravens 2000,
as in their Super Bowl team, their first Super Bowl team. Ravens Zero. Ravens Zero.
says, Kevin, I hope you're right about Derek Henry
breaking Eric Dickerson's rushing record.
But I don't think it'll happen.
The Ravens are deep at running back and they really like, as you referred to him,
number 26 as Henry's backup.
You were right about Ali.
He's also great as a returner.
So what Ravens Zero-Zero is talking about on Radio
today in the segment that we call NFL buy and sell, where you have to buy something NFL
related, a player, a team, and you have to do the same thing on the sell side. My purchase
today was Derek Henry to break Eric Dickerson's rushing record this season. You know, he had
169 yards. Derek Henry doesn't show any signs of aging or slowing down. And with Lamar Jackson
and with that offensive line, you know, it's out there as a prediction,
but I think that Derek Henry is going to have another big year.
He had 1900 plus last year.
The other part of what Raven Zero Zero was talking about,
it's funny because I had no idea,
although I did see him in that game as a returner,
but I did not know he was the backup to Henry.
But when Washington played Baltimore in the final preseason game,
I said that the most important,
impressive player on the field in a game that obviously didn't mean much and not many people
were playing was number 26 for Baltimore. And I think I did mention his name, Raven Zero,
but I did refer to him, yes, as 26 was the most impressive player on the field. He's got
incredible vision, really good running back, came out of Marshall, you know, a couple of years ago.
in the 24 draft, and I thought, wow, that guy, if the Ravens cut him, Washington should think about picking him up.
And a friend of mine who's a big Ravens fan actually told me, doubt that they're going to cut him, they love him, and he's going to be a return guy.
So in the game against Buffalo on Sunday night, he was, along with Justice Hill.
You know, Justice Hill is the change of pace back for Derek Henry.
only other running back that got a carry other than Henry and Justice Hill was Ali, one carry five
yards. But as a kickoff returner, he had a hell of a game. Six kickoff returns. He averaged
27.8 yards per return and had one return of 41 yards. So there you go, Ravens Zero, zero.
Yeah, I would still bet that Derek Henry is going to get enough carries.
And here's the other key, too.
If Baltimore doesn't, let's just say, run away with the division,
and they've got games all the way through the very end of the season that matter,
that could put him in a position like Sequin Barclay was last year.
And the Eagles sat Barclay in the season finale when he had a chance
to break Eric Dickerson's record.
He ended up being 100 yards short.
of Dickerson's record. So Baltimore losing to Buffalo, maybe, you know, having a tough
battle in the NFC North, playing 17 games would be critical. Now, Dickerson did it in 16 games
back in 1984. And then this from Randy Q, Randy Q, Ryan, Ryan, Q, right, Sheehan, not sure if you
saw this, but Jaden wasn't helped out by his receivers against the Giants. Third,
worst receiver group in week one.
So I know exactly what Randy Q is referring to, and he sent me the link.
I actually had already seen it, Randy Q, and I talked about it on radio, but Warren
Sharp put out the list of the highest rate of incompletions due to receiver error in week
one.
receiver error is defined as drops, but also accounts for when a receiver loses control of the ball on the ground,
or a receiver slips and falls to cause an incompletion, or a receiver doesn't get both feet in bounds,
but should have gotten both feet in bounds.
And so the highest rate of incompletions due to receiver error, based on that definition,
Jaden was second.
36.4% of his incompletions were due to receiver error.
We know he had drops in the game, three or four by my count.
And yeah, and Matthew Stafford, by the way, was number one,
with 37.5% of his passes due to receiver error.
I was wondering why the Rams and Texans played such a low-scoring game.
I think they're both capable offenses.
Stafford was 21 of 29 for 245 in one touchdown,
but he had multiple drops in the game by receivers,
even though Puka Nakua had an outstanding game.
and it would appear as if Devante Adams probably had a few drops because he had eight targets
and four catches for 51 yards.
Yeah, a little bit weird that the Rams Texans were, that game was 14 to 9.
I'm looking to see if there were turnovers.
There were three turnovers and a lot of penalties in the game.
There were a lot of penalties in week one, period.
it. But yeah, Jaden was actually number two on the list. Yeah, I actually didn't pick up on that.
Randy Q, it wasn't the third worst percentage of receiver error. It was the second
worst. Stafford was one. Daniels was two. Joe Flacco and the Cleveland Browns were three.
I mentioned that game with Tommy yesterday. I'm telling you, the Cleveland Browns are going to be a
pesky team this year.
How a team like Cincinnati only had two yards in the second half and 141 of total yards
is incredible.
All right.
I want to get to something here before we get to Nick Ackridge, and that is tomorrow
night's game.
First of all, this is the biggest early season game Washington has had.
I went back and the game that would be even remote.
close to this one and it's not, would be week three in 2017 against the Raiders at home on
Sunday night football. That game was won by Washington dominant style, 27 to 10, Kirk threw for
365 and three touchdowns, and they dominated the Raiders who came in 2 and 0 off of a 12 and 4 season
the year before. By the way, the head coach was Jack Del Rio. It was,
you know, a primetime Sunday night game, Washington had had that
2015 season where they went to the postseason and then 2016
where they missed out on the postseason in the final game of the year.
I would say, and that's not even a great comp,
but that tells you how long it's been since they've been
an early season game featured in a way in which people said,
eh, that's a pretty good game. Because this weekend, the only game,
that's bigger than Green Bay, Washington.
Where more anticipated is the Super Bowl rematch between the Eagles and the Chiefs.
So that's number one about the game tomorrow night.
Number two is this.
I went back and watched the condensed version, not the All-22 or the whole game,
but the condensed 45-minute version of the Lions Packers game from Sunday,
the season opener at Lambo.
The Packers destroyed Detroit.
27 to 13 was the final score, but it was 27 to 6.
Detroit scored very late in that game.
I came away understanding that it's just week one, but very impressed with Green Bay's personnel.
First of all, let me just mention this offensively.
I've been a Jordan Love fan.
Man, he can throw the football.
And if you protect Jordan Love, first of all, he's athletic enough to play off schedule and be creative.
He's very good at that.
But he can really throw the football, and they did a phenomenal job of protecting him,
especially when you consider Aidan Hutchinson is part of the Detroit pass rush.
Jordan Love looked super sharp in the game.
He didn't have to do a lot.
He was 16 of 22 for 188 yards, two touchdowns, no interceptions, no sacks.
His QBR in the game was 92.1.
And it was interesting.
The Packers converted on their first four third downs,
and they were third and longs, including the touchdown pass,
to Tucker Kraft, the tight end, number 85, who can really play.
And then they did not convert another third down except for a couple via penalty the rest of the way.
They finished four for 10 on third down.
They did get two third down conversions because of defensive penalties.
but Jordan Love was impressive to me. Number two is this. They have a lot of receivers.
I don't know if any of them are elite. I don't think they are. But between Dobbs, 87, Jaden Reed
number 11, Wicks number 13, the rookie from Texas, Matthew Golden, who wears number zero.
They've got a lot of options, so much so that he completed passes. Only 16 passes he completed in the game.
They only had 47 offensive snaps in the game.
In the game, he completed 16 passes to 10 different receivers.
That's hard to do.
16 completions to 10 different receivers.
In the first quarter, eight different guys caught passes from Jordan Love.
That is very much an unusual.
thing. But 16
completions, 10
different receivers is
really unusual.
And they're all good.
We'll see what Matthew Golden
ends up being. But Dobbs, Reed,
Wicks, Golden,
the tight end craft, you know,
is a big target. It seems like all he does is
catch touchdowns. Then they've got, you know,
obviously Josh Jacobs as a
potential option out of the backfield.
But there are a lot of options
for Jordan Love.
And I'll tell you this,
Matt Lafleur knows how to scheme up some offense and call plays.
I think he does.
Jacobs, you know, had a very pedestrian season opener.
He's a very good back.
19 carries 66 yards.
I did read something from, I think it was Gratziano at ESPN,
about how typically, you know,
when he doesn't get a lot of carries,
they come back and they really pound Jacobs.
We'll see if they try to do that tomorrow night.
He had 19 carries for 66 yards.
He's an excellent back.
I think we all understand that Jacobs is an excellent back
and had an excellent first year in Green Bay last year,
rushed for over 1,300 yards and 15 touchdowns.
He did get a touchdown on Sunday.
But I think, first of all, Green Bay has a lot of options offensively.
I don't know that any of them are elite options.
I think Josh Jacobs is a very good back, but I really like Jordan Love.
And if they protect him, I think it could be a long night defensively.
Because they did not necessarily run the ball.
I mean, they ran it.
They ended up having good balance, but it's not like they were super successful.
Their average yards per rush in the game, 3.1.
Jacobs was at 3.5 yards per carry.
They didn't need to do a lot in this game in the second half.
They had, you know, a 17 to 3 lead at halftime, 17 to 6, basically going into the fourth quarter,
and then it grew to 24 to 6, 27 to 6.
So it's not like they relied on Jordan Love and the offense to do a lot in the fourth quarter,
which is probably why, you know, they ended up after going touchdown,
field goal touchdown on their first three drives of the first half.
they ended up, you know, punting several times in the second half.
But offensively impressed, but I'm going to tell you, the most impressive part of their team was their defense.
And again, it's one game and it's the opener.
But they have talent on defense.
And Micah Parsons is a massive difference maker.
There is no doubt.
He only played 30 of the 67 snaps that were possible defensively.
But with him and Gary and Walker and also Lucas Van Ness, remember Lucas Van Ness the 2023 draft where Washington ended up selecting Emmanuel Forbes, who by the way started and played 79% of the snaps for the Rams on Sunday.
A lot of former players of this team.
John Allen apparently had a very good game in Minnesota. Monday night, Jeremy Chin, I think played well, I think for the Raiders.
I'm forgetting somebody.
But anyway, that draft, if you recall the brain trust of the Marties and Ron Rivera
and all the videos they put out post-draft, they tried to trade from 16 up to 14 where the Patriots were picking.
A lot of people thought it was, well, they want Christian Gonzalez.
or maybe they want an offensive lineman.
I think the guy they wanted in that draft was Darnell right from Tennessee.
He's a Chicago bear.
Broderick Jones was still on the board.
He's in Pittsburgh.
But they, you know, had the video of Martin Mayhew talking to the Patriots.
And then when the Packers picked Lucas Van Ness at 13, they said, yeah, we're not, we're not interested in the trade anymore.
Which is why, you know, Standing picked up.
on this first, and I think he's 100% right. They were looking in 2023 to replace Chase Young,
even before they traded Chase Young. They wanted a new defensive end and a young one, and they
liked Van Ness a lot. Van Ness is a good player. He is turning into a very good player here in
year three. But remember about that draft real quickly. So the Packers took Van Ness. Washington
didn't make the trade with New England.
New England ended up trading out of the 14th spot
to allow the Steelers to come up and take Broderick Jones
because the Patriots were comfortable
that they could get Christian Gonzalez
after Washington selected,
knowing that Washington was enamored with Emmanuel Forbes.
Anyway, very impressed with the Packers on defense.
They were very good.
against the run. I mean, this is a Detroit team that has Montgomery and Gibbs. We know what Gibbs can do.
Gibbs was 9 for 19. By the way, he's got a New Jersey number. He wears number zero.
He was 9 for 19, and David Montgomery was 11 for 25. 20 for 44 yards, 2.2 yards per carry.
They shut down the run. And then they got after Jared Gough. Now, Jaden Daniels is a
completely different player than Jared Gough. Dual threat can extend mobile.
Jared Gough, not so much. Timing quarterback, the whole thing. They disrupted the timing.
He was 31 to 39, but just for 225 yards, there were a lot of checkdowns there.
In fact, Jamir Gibbs had 10 catches in the game, 10 for 31. So he hit the checkdown a lot.
Montgomery had four catches. So the running backs in that game had 14 catches.
Gibbs 10 for 31 in that game. That reminds me, by the way, as I'm just sitting here, talking about it, of the John Beck game against the 49ers in 2011.
Remember that game? I actually had John Beck on and talked to him about this because in that game, if you recall, Roy Hulu,
had 14 catches for 105 yards.
It was checked down Charlie the entire game.
Beck actually, when I asked him about that,
he was sensitive to not that necessarily,
but it sort of opened him up to talking about
his time in Washington and how he was kind of sensitive
to a lot of the criticism that he took here in Washington
for not only that game,
but remember the next game he played in, I think it was the next game or maybe it was the game before,
the Buffalo Bills in Toronto when he was just abysmal.
I mean, he couldn't play as a starter in the league.
He ended up having better days in his career, I think, in Miami,
or maybe that was Miami before Washington.
I can't remember.
But, yeah, you know, getting back to Green Bay.
and Detroit, they shut down the run defensively, and then they got after Goff so much to the
conclusion of hitting the checkdown 14 times in the game.
Jemir Gibbs, 10 catches as a running back.
I would bet eight of them were checkdowns, and maybe one or two was, you know, a swing
pass or a screen.
But they're impressive defensively.
they really get after it.
And I had somebody on from Green Bay on the radio show this morning,
and he said that basically the Packers are a much different team defensively in style this year.
You know, their defensive coordinator is the former Boston College head coach, Jeff Hathley.
He's their defensive coordinator.
And my guest told me this morning that,
they were much more aggressive than they've been, and maybe it's because of Parsons. I don't know.
Parsons was very, very effective. 30 snaps. Is it possible that he's on a pitch count tomorrow
night because, you know, he didn't have a summer, got in late to Green Bay, still getting acclimated?
It'd be better for Washington if he was off the field more than he is on it. But I was impressed with the Packers.
It's just one game, but I was impressed with their personnel.
I've been a Jordan love guy.
I think he's legit.
I don't think he's Jaden.
I don't think he's Josh Allen or Mahomes or Jackson or Burrow,
but I think he's in that next tier of quarterbacks,
and I think he's going to prove it this year.
This is a huge game.
You know, despite the idea and I think the truth that these early season games are misleading,
they count.
They're only 17 of them.
And when you get to December and you're trying to figure out things like seating or births in the postseason, this is a game that could be very important for both teams.
My bookie currently has Green Bay as a three and a half point favorite.
The total is 48.5.
That is the largest point total of any game on the board this weekend.
I'll have my prediction and my keys tomorrow, but honestly, right now, after seeing these two teams,
I think we're going to get a shootout.
And I think it's going to be a quarterback shootout.
Love against Jaden.
And I could easily see a game in the high 20s, low 30s, at least, in the game going over the total.
I think we're going to see week two, better offense from Washington, cleaner offense from Washington,
And Green Bay is very capable.
Of course, this will be a much, much different test for Washington's, you know,
new revamped defense tomorrow night at Lambo.
All right.
Let's get to Nick Ackridge.
We'll do that right after these words from a few of our sponsors.

hopefully, not the last time this year, but it is football season, and we've had Nick Ackridge as a part of
the show, usually a couple of times a year. Nick is a senior data analyst with pro football
focus. You can follow him on X on Twitter at PFF underscore Nick Ackridge. He doesn't always get
the responsibility of evaluating the Washington game, but he does it anyway because he is
obsessed with all things DC sports as his Twitter handle describes. So before we get to
our game. Which games did you have as a responsibility this week?
Yeah, I graded the Bengals offense and then the Ravens offense for first run.
And then I'm a part of the review team as well. So I do some reviews on the run game for
the Raiders and Falcons and then, or Raiders and Patriots and Falcons. So a lot of football.
Unfortunately, none of it was the commanders, but I did still get a chance to watch that all 22.
You had the Bengals offense.
I actually talked about this game in that I don't know if Cincinnati wins that same game more than one time out of 100.
They were dominated in this game.
And even Cleveland's offense moved the ball up and down the field,
but had a couple of drop passes that turned into interceptions.
But I'm curious, how did you grade the Bengals offense against that Brown's defense?
Yeah, it was rough.
I mean, it was kind of your typical
angle start to the season.
Yeah.
Joe Burrow was missing some throws,
not really your typical Burrow performance,
which kind of led to some, you know,
T. Higgins and Jamar Chase, you know, down performances.
Offensive line was rough again.
Couldn't really run the ball.
Didn't really like what they were necessarily doing with their run scheme.
And it was just like, it was just a rough start to the season,
which is kind of what they continue to do.
But like you said,
that this time they actually won, which is pretty rare for them.
I felt like they lost games like this almost every single time last year when, you know,
the kind of scenario was reversed where they were dominating would still somehow lose.
So I guess it's a positive for them.
They actually won one of these games, but they're one or else.
Yeah, you know, remember during the preseason, they took a different, you know, tact.
They decided to play their starters a lot more than they have to hopefully change the results
of what's been a really bad early season start theme over the last couple of years.
And they probably looked worse offensively than they've looked in the past couple of years.
But as you said, they won the game.
So good for them.
I did actually, I watched some of that game because I was curious as to what was going on in the game.
Miles Garrett is just an absolute monster, isn't he?
Yeah, yeah, he's the best eddressure in the NFL.
I think it's him in Parsons, and I don't really think it's close after that.
He's so good. He's such an incredible athlete.
He's just unblockable.
Unblockable.
And the other thing I noticed was that rookie from UCLA that everybody liked Carson Schweringer,
who plays for Cleveland.
He was impressive in the game.
Yeah, I know he had some pretty impressive plays, too.
I really liked, but he was pretty active in the run game, just kind of sticking his nose in there.
And I definitely like what I saw from him.
You know, it's one of those things where, like, from a betting standpoint, and that's how I view things.
I'm always looking, because the NFL's so unpredictable, and most people before season starts,
they don't get it right. And some teams that you think are going to stink end up being much better.
And I have a feeling Cleveland will be a difficult out, you know, maybe, you know, just the early
portion of the season, you know, until they decide to play one of their young
quarterbacks and then it'll probably go downhill in the short term.
But defensively, they're good.
And I said this today on radio, Flacco can still spin it with the best of them.
Yeah, no, their defense is going to keep them in a lot of games.
I mean, anytime you have Miles Garrett, him by himself will be able to keep you into games
just because of what he can do to affect the quarterback.
But yeah, no, I think defense is going to keep them in games.
And as long as Flacco doesn't lose them games,
or their kickers doesn't lose them games,
then I think they can definitely win a few,
steal a few games.
Maybe some Brown fans don't want them to do that
and want them to continue to tank.
But I think having Flacco there,
you can definitely steal some games.
All right, well, this isn't why I called you
to talk about Cleveland or Cincinnati.
Let's talk about our team.
First of all, before we get to some of the individual performances,
what were your biggest takeaways from the game?
Yeah, my biggest takeaway was the defensive line.
You know, they pretty much dominated the game.
I thought they were fantastic.
And I think another big thing was all of the new additions played really, really well.
The free agent signings, the rookies, well, most for the rookies.
And I think that's a huge, huge win for Adam Peters.
I know it's week one, and especially for the defensive line,
getting to go against the Giants offensive line is a great matchup for them to start with.
and we'll kind of see if that continues this next week
when they go up against a much, much, much better often fun
in Green Bay.
But hard not to be just ecstatic with that performance from them.
Yeah, that's what I was going to ask you next.
It's like I think everybody was impressed with what they did defensively
and the new additions, Kinlaugh.
I mean, I thought Goldman was good.
And I didn't think Goldman was going to end up playing as much as he did three weeks ago.
I think there was some doubt about him even making the football team.
They lined them up at nose tackle a bunch, a defensive tackle.
But I was going to ask you, like, you know, it's early, and we don't know for sure,
Andrew Thomas wasn't in the game, their best offensive lineman,
but how much do you think the giant offense played into the results defensively?
I think it played into it a little bit.
I wouldn't take all of the credit away from them because, you know,
at the end of the day, you still have to go out there and win.
your individual matchups, and I think they consistently did that.
All of them, I mean, I'm looking at the grades now, and there wasn't a single
defensive lineman below 61, and our grade, an average game is 60.
Anything above 60 is good.
All of them are there, like you said, Eddie Goldman, 84, Javon Kinlaw, 89.7,
which was the second highest graded game of his entire career.
So, I mean, it's just, yeah, the Giants Off of the Line definitely played a little bit into,
and it's why I really want to see what happened on Thursday.
But, yeah, I'm just really excited for him.
So that was, what did you say Ken Loss grade was?
89.7 overall.
How much of that was run defense versus pass rush?
Yeah, 87.6 run defense grade.
Yeah, so that was kind of the big thing there.
I think he had a few run stops.
He was just dominating, just constantly,
getting pressure in the run game and in the past game.
It was fun to see.
And it made me kind of eat my words a little bit because I was not a huge fan of the Kinlaw
signing, but if he keeps that up, I will happily admit defeat there.
Well, I think you said, because I think I had you on afterwards, what we all said,
which is okay, but isn't that too much money for that player?
Yeah.
Yeah, I think that, like, the money at first was a bit surprising based on what he's done in his
career and I think the money was more kind of based on his physical ability and you know
former draft status that still kind of plays a lot into people's minds and right now he is he's
proving me wrong and I'm happy for that so tell me about Duran Payne's game because I on the
surface without having graded it I mean going back and even watching the all 22 I thought he was
really good in this game what did PFF think?
Yeah, 77.1 overall grade.
The only thing that kind of brought it down
to miss the tackle or two.
But yeah, I thought he was really, really good.
One of his best performances in a couple years.
I was really, again, impressed with what I saw from Durham Payne.
You know, you mentioned the tackling.
I thought one of the things that was most impressive about Sunday,
especially when you consider teams do tend to struggle
with tackling early in the season because they basically don't do it over the summer.
I thought it was an excellent tackling performance by the defense overall.
What did you and the PFF, you know, analysts for this game think?
Yeah, we charted them with just seven missed tackles.
And three of them, unfortunately, came from Frankie Louvre.
So the rest of the team, not really missing tackles at all is a huge thing to sleep.
Like you said, it's usually something that takes a bit to get into
because they're not taking this sort of physical beating in the preseason.
so really kind of happy to see how they were able to tackle.
Were the Louvre missed tackles?
Because I did say that I remembered Louvoo missing at least one or two.
They were in space, though, right?
On past receptions?
Yes, I believe so.
I think two of them were.
I can't remember all three, but I'm pretty sure two of them were kind of in open space.
Because I thought he was pretty good against the run with, I mean, I think Wagner was
exceptional against the run, as he always.
is. But I thought Louvoo's game against the run where, let's face it, last year they got hurt
on the edges, they got hurt everywhere. And Louvo and Wagner were the best tacklers on the team.
I guess Chin was an excellent tackler as well last year. But yeah, I'm curious, like in open spaces,
you know, after a pass reception, is that a hard grade, a mistackle or just a really good play
by the offensive player? Yeah. There's always some kind of
aviates with how we are grading mistackles. Your standard mistackle is, in our grading system,
is just a minus one. Those are plays where we expect you to make the tackle. We can change that
kind of based on different scenarios. You know, when you get out into the open field,
sometimes it's tougher for these bigger guys to make tackles on a smaller one. So we maybe take
that downgrade a little bit less. You know, obviously there's also times when, you know,
you're in a huge pile and you're kind of getting pushed off in tackles. We won't count those
mistackles, but there's still kind of opportunities.
And instead of, you know, earning a positive grade, it will just kind of come out as a zero.
So there's kind of moments like that, but pretty much every single mistackle, when I say mistackles,
every single one of them is going to have some sort of uniqueness to that grade.
Every single one is pretty much always going to be different.
So every single time we're looking at them and mistackle, there's a lot of context that goes into each of them.
One of the conversations in the off season, I think you know, you've probably had it with many people, maybe even with me, was the choice to go Will Harris for, by the way, half the money of Jeremy Chin.
And I thought he stood out as much as anybody did defensively, especially as a hitter and a tackler.
How did he grade out on PFF?
Yeah, he finished with the 84.3 overall grade. That was the second highest on the defense.
Behind Kinlox?
Yeah, behind Kinlo.
Okay.
Yeah, I was very impressive with how he played.
I was actually a huge fan of that signing.
I think that you weren't going to miss much going from, you know,
Chin to Will Harris.
I thought he was a really smart player.
He's kind of always in the right position.
He wasn't going to make a bunch of flashy plays,
but he was always going to make the right play.
And that's what he did at a really high level on Sunday.
So I was really happy to see that.
How did Dorrance Armstrong pan out per PFF?
I mean, he played everywhere.
He played linebacker, he played end, he played inside on third and long.
I mean, they trust him versatility-wise.
How did he, I thought he had a really good game.
What did you guys think?
Yeah, he had a, look at 77.1 overall grade, which is, again, very good.
Anything above 75 is seen as a good game.
He was really solid there.
Six total pressures.
He was just, you know, like you said, they kind of move.
moved him around everywhere, and he played really well.
That was one of the things that kind of stood out to me.
I'm wondering if you made note of it is, you know, we talked about depth in certain areas,
and we weren't sure about D-Line and the additions they made.
They played a bunch of players, and they played a bunch of players up front in different spots.
What did you make of that?
Yeah, yeah, that's 100%.
They used, you know, Jacob Martin played 28-knaps, Front Door 28-knap, Eddie Gull.
Oldman 26 snaps.
Johnny Newton only had 26 snaps.
So they were definitely rotating guys in and out.
And that's kind of how they were going to have to attack this season with, you know,
I don't think they really have a true pass rusher.
You know, you can point to Von Miller, but he, you know,
as the snaps are showing, he's only going to play 20 to 30 snaps a game.
So this is what you're going to have to kind of do, just constantly rotate guys in and out,
keep fresh bodies on the field.
And that's exactly what they did.
All right.
Let's take a quick break, and when we come back, we'll go to the offensive side of the ball and see how PFF graded out, Jaden Daniels, and others.
We'll do that right after these words from a few of our sponsors.
This episode is brought to you by Prize Picks.
Guys, football season is back.
Wasn't it fun to have the NFL back this past weekend?
My favorite Daily Fantasy Sports app during football season is prize picks.
Prize picks is fun, it's exciting, it's a game of skill, and it's very easy to play.
Prize picks present you with stat projections on players, and all you have to do is pick more or less.
Like last night in the Monday night game, I had under 49 and a half rush yards for Aaron Jones, in part because my guy Paul Chartian, out of Minneapolis, told me that Jordan Mason was going to be,
a very big part of Minnesota's rush attack.
I cashed on that one.
Aaron Jones had 44 yards rushing.
I also went over Caleb Williams on passing yards,
2.18 and a half, and he threw for 2.10.
So I didn't cash on that one,
but it's so much fun to play, and that's the example.
They give you numbers, stat projections,
and you just go more or less.
If you get the picks right,
you cash in. Prize picks puts their users first, so all withdrawals are fast, safe, and secure.

We continue with Nick Ackeridge from Pro Football Focus.
Let's talk offense from Sunday's game against the Giants.
It wasn't clean.
It wasn't pretty at times.
It was sloppy at times.
But I still think Jaden Daniels played a pretty good football game against New York.
how did you guys grade it out?
Yeah, it's funny because I kind of thought that he was good,
but it wasn't kind of Jaden standard.
Right, right.
He still graded out with an 83.9.
83.9.
And that's just kind of what you come to expect from him.
Like I think we all kind of saw some of the inaccuracy,
some of those misses.
He'd love to have those back.
He, again, talked about some of those inaccuracies in the off season.
So those were a little frustrating at times,
but he still played really, really well.
Obviously, his legs were a factor again, being able to throw on the run.
I thought he was just really good in a somewhat disappointing effort,
if that makes any sense.
But that's just kind of what you come to expect from him.
His bad games are still very good.
How many drops did you guys have in the game for Washington?
We had three total drops.
So Ertz, Lane, and I'm forgetting who had the other obvious.
Debo had one.
Debo, yeah.
So you didn't, okay, so three, three drops in the game.
Okay.
Offensively, give me a couple of other really strong performers and then maybe one or two that didn't perform well.
Yeah, I mean, Jacorio, Cross, New Merritt Bill was great in his,
you know, only 23 snaps.
I only ran the ball 10 times.
So, like, and he was fantastic.
Really happy to see that.
Laramie Tumphill was solid.
And his start, 79.0 overall grade.
I gave up that one sack to Abdul Carter, but that was really kind of it.
Thought he was solid.
Some guys that kind of struggled a little bit with Brandon Coleman,
which is kind of to be expected when you're going up against Dexter Lawrence.
That's a tough, tough matchup.
And then Biotic struggled a little bit with Dexter Lawrence.
But, again, that's what's going to have.
happen when you're facing probably the best defensive tackle in the NFL, in my opinion.
You would take Lawrence in front of Jalen Carter? You'd take Lawrence in front of Jalen Carter?
I think I would. They're kind of in the same tier, but I think I would take Dexter Lawrence over.
It's funny because before the season started, we did a segment where we ranked the top five players in the NFC East.
and I, based on what I think he's going to become, I said, I think Jalen Carter in 2025 blows up and ends up being the best player.
I had Lawrence in the top five.
I think Lawrence gets incredibly overlooked because he's played on some bad teams.
But he really is special.
By the way, just out of curiosity, what did Abdul Carter, you know, rate in this game?
because I thought he was unbelievable for his first game, including on special teams,
where he blocked one punt and nearly got another one.
Yeah, he was their highest grade of defender.
81.5, Dexter Lawrence was second right behind him.
Wow.
Yeah, just a great start for him.
And again, beating Laramie Tunsel for your first career sack in the NFL is pretty impressive.
He's going to be a problem for a long time.
Not a fan of him being on the Giants, but yeah, he'll definitely be a problem.
Well, he beat Connerly Jr. as well.
So what kind of game to Connerley Jr. have?
It was kind of up and down.
He finished with a 53.4 overall grade, which, again, a little slightly below average.
Again, that's kind of to be expected.
Connerley's going to have to go through a gauntlet to start his season with Abdul Carter,
Brian Burns, his first game.
And then he's going to have obviously Micah Parsons on Thursday.
So it's going to be tough matchups for him, but he's thrown right into the fire.
and I think he held his own on some plays.
I think, you know, if you told me afterwards a 53.4 is kind of where he landed.
I would be okay with that.
I know it doesn't sound great, but I thought he kind of held his own.
Two pressures, one sack.
I think, again, it was up and down from the guy.
And, you know, for someone playing his first, you know, real game at right tackle in his career,
I think it was pretty solid.
I'm assuming, I don't think you mentioned him, but I'm assuming,
assuming Debo, you know, did well.
Yeah, yeah, Debo was up there as well.
71.9 overall grade, which is kind of to be expected to drop,
brings it down a little bit.
Probably would have put him closer to like 75.
But, yeah, just a weapon.
Just so fun to see him and see kind of ways that Cliff is able to use him.
Yeah, I agree with that.
Anything surprise you, you know, players that played a lot versus players
that maybe didn't play as much, you know, because these are,
things we were all wondering and you don't really know until the, you know, real games begin.
Were you surprised by anything?
Yeah, I mean, there wasn't, there wasn't much. I mean, I think one of the surprises with
Luke McCaffrey, he only played five snaps on offense. Chris Moore was getting
some reps over him. Chris Moore and 19 snaps. Jalen Lane, 21. So that was a little surprising
people who follow me know that I'm a Luke McCaffrey believer as much as this regime might not
believe in him. That one was a little surprising to me. Defense, Jonathan Jones only playing eight
snaps, Noah Igbonagny only playing five snaps, which is kind of good, which it means that
your top three guys are really performing, and that's Amos, Latimore and Stanors. So I thought
they had a pretty solid game, so not a lot of rotation there from the secondary, but some really
some really good play. Yeah, that's actually a good observation, and I didn't make that one,
that basically Amos, Sanristil, and Latimore were on the field primarily as their three corners.
Although, really, the coverages changed a lot. It wasn't like, you know, they gave Latimore, you know,
Malik neighbors. It was a lot of different coverages on the giant receivers. And by the way,
not a lot of time anyway for Russell Wilson to throw, so it didn't really matter.
Yeah, I mean, I remember, I think I tweeted out like halfway through the third or fourth quarter that their entire offense is just throwing a Russell Wilson moonball deep and hoping you get past interference for Malik neighbors makes a great play. That was kind of their offense.
Yeah. I actually was thinking about this. I don't know if they're going to go to Jackson Dart, you know, if they lose to the Cowboys and they look the same way again. But I bet you if James Winston had started the game Sunday, the giant offense would have been a lot better.
Yeah, I'm a big James fan.
So my.
Why are you a big James fan?
Me personally, I think he's entertaining, both on and off the field.
I think he just played a very entertaining style of football where he's not afraid to take risk.
Oh, God, not afraid of all.
Which is the exact opposite of Russell Wilson right now.
I think that he just plays the game in a very, it's just a fun way to watch.
Now, if I was, if he was the quarterback of my team, I might not think the same, because it can be
very, very frustrating to watch.
But watching him on the Browns,
and he will have games where he just plays lights out
because all the decisions that he's making are correct.
And I just think that would have been my choice.
I didn't really understand what they were doing
with bringing Russell Wilson in, James Winston,
and then drafting Jackson Dardt.
Obviously, I know why they're drafting a quarterback,
but bringing those two veterans in didn't really make a lot of sense.
To me, I would have brought one in over the other,
but yeah, I just don't really know what their plan is at quarterback.
I mean, I think Dart eventually gets the start, but I don't really know when.
I wouldn't put him back there behind that offensive line, especially with Andrew Thomas out.
There were two surprises for me on Sunday.
I don't know what I thought of the McCaffrey-Morthing.
I guess that was surprising that Moore got a lot more snaps.
But as much as we've heard about Jordan McGee over the last year and a half since they drafted him,
he played two defensive snaps.
He played on special teams.
And to me, I don't know if that says anything about him as much as it says that they just don't trust Bobby Wagner being off the field because he doesn't leave the field at all.
And then the other one, and I actually in watching the game, didn't realize that he played this much because I didn't see a lot of them.
I was told early in camp that Johnny Newton's going to be a force as a pass rusher, that they really have high expectations for him.
and I do think he can be a really good pass rusher,
but on the third and longs, he wasn't the guy in the game.
You know, they had Kinlaw.
I mean, they had Payne and Armstrong inside,
Louvo and Von Miller on the outside.
Those were the two things that sort of surprised me.
Yeah, I mean, I was a huge Johnny Newton fan in college.
I think, like you said, as a pass rusher, I think that's where he's best.
I think he could, when they drafted him, I thought he could be a very, very great
interior pass rush. Me too.
And something that they could
kind of slide right in behind Ben,
Payne and Allen and kind of not lose a set,
but it hasn't really happened so far.
He had a decent showing
and, you know, he had 18 pass rushing snaps
and four pressures. That's pretty
solid, 70.0 pass rush grade.
But yeah,
that is one guy that I would love to see
to see more of.
All right. Let's end with this.
I don't know how much of the Green Bay
Detroit game you
watched or how much of the grading you've followed, but what are the challenges tomorrow night?
How do they beat the Packers?
Yeah, I haven't had a chance to watch too much of it, but just kind of right off the bat,
it's Micah Parsons.
It's trying to figure out how you're going to block him.
You know, he is a force.
You have to, everything that you do on offense has to be around how do we stop him from
destroying the game.
And then when it comes to defense, you have to, again,
a huge test for that defensive line because
their offensive line is very, very good.
Jordan Love also looked really good.
Green Bay did a very good
job of, you know,
protecting against the lines blitz.
I think Jordan Love had the highest grade
against the Blitz this year, not this year,
but last week.
He was excellent.
Grand quarterback. Yeah.
Yeah, because they were just picking up everything.
So that's one thing that you're going to have to
really count on your
defensive line for that maybe Blitzers
aren't going to work to get pressure home and you're going to have to
win with the four up front.
So that's kind of how I see them winning this game is, I think that defensive line is able
to get pressure on Jordan Love, and they contain Micah Parsons.
I think that's just, that's the biggest key right there.
I'm intrigued to kind of see how this often keeps going.
I think it was kind of, I think we can all kind of agree it was a little floppy at
time.
I'm kind of intrigued to see how they play on a short week against a pretty good defense.
at PFF underscore Nick Ackridge, A-K-R-I-D-G-E.
Always good to have you on the show.
Hope all is well.
We'll do it again soon.
Yep, thanks for having me.
Up next, what Matt LaFleurr said yesterday about Dan Quinn,
that and more after these words from a few of our sponsors.
I wanted to thank those of you that reached out many of you did last week to let us know,
let me know that the show that we had put up late last week was actually the previous day's show.
Yeah, we had a technical issue where instead of the new show going up, the show from the day
before went up, we fixed it quickly, thanks to you guys letting us know.
But for some of you, it took a while for the new show to hit on various platforms, including
Apple and Spotify.
When that happens, you can always go to the website, the can.
Kevin Sheeonshow.com.
That's where we control how quickly the updated version of the show goes up.
So the updated version of the show was up immediately after we realized what had happened
with the show the day before going up instead of that day's show.
And the other thing is just refresh the show on Apple and Spotify and you'll get the new show.
but when in doubt, because it does sometimes take a little bit of time for Apple and Spotify and some of the other podcast platforms to put the show up.
And we're really at their mercy.
We post the show, we put it on the platform and then, you know, it's up to them to get it up.
And it usually doesn't take very long.
But in an updated version like we had last week, it took a little bit too long.
Just remember, you can always listen to this show.
show at the Kevin Sheehan Show.com. Also, just a quick favor on the heels of that. If you haven't
rated or reviewed the show, maybe not the best time to ask for it, but it's really helpful for
us on Apple and Spotify if you rate the show. You can do it up to five stars if you think we
deserve it. And on Apple, you can write a quick one to two sentence review. Those things
really help us out, as does following the show, just hit the plus button or the follow
button on Apple and Spotify in particular.
Anyway, all right.
Matt LaFleur was on the staff in Atlanta with Dan Quinn.
So were a lot of other coaches, including, of course, Kyle Shanahan in 2016,
Steve Sarkeesian, Rahim Morris, Jeff Ulbrecht, who was, you know, a temporary
head coach with the Jets.
I mean, Dan Quinn spit out some really good coaches.
Now, a lot of those guys were the Shanahan tree guys, but they went and coached with Dan Quinn.
And we've mentioned this a lot.
Dan Quinn is just a highly respected coach in this league.
And Matt LaFleur asked about Dan Quinn yesterday during his Wednesday, our Tuesday press conference, said,
quote, I'm pretty certain I wouldn't be standing here right now if it hadn't been for being,
with DQ for those two years in Atlanta, closed quote.
Rahim Morris has said similar things about being with Dan Quinn.
Kyle Shanahan loves Dan Quinn.
This is why, you know, and this conversation has bubbled up again this week
because Ben Johnson made his debut in Chicago on Monday night.
And even during the Monday night, you know, pregame stuff,
they talked about Ben Johnson turning Washington down.
That did not happen.
Ben Johnson didn't turn Washington down in terms of an offer.
He turned down part two and the more significant in person interview.
By the way, as they were on the plane to interview him in Detroit,
because he didn't want to be a head coach.
You know, and he had that comment about basketball guys that,
you know, made the rounds.
They're doing pretty well right now for basketball guys.
Thank you, Bob Myers, Magic Johnson.
But he was never offered the job.
And on my children, based on my sources at the time,
Quinn was always very, very high on their list,
if not a frontrunner, the frontrunner,
from the moment they interviewed him.
And my contention is, given where Ben John,
Johnson's head was at the time, which was not wanting to be a head coach.
If they had interviewed him in person, I don't think they would have offered him.
I think they would have understood that this was a guy that wasn't necessarily ready in that
moment to be a head coach.
And maybe it's because he didn't want to come to Washington.
And they would have sensed that.
Quinn was already a guy that they were like, this is our guy.
Now, if Ben Johnson wanted to be a head coach, if he had interviewed and blown them out of the water, yes, they may have offered him.
It's possible. They weren't going there for just grins. They were going there because he was the hot offensive coordinator.
And they had done the Zoom interview weeks earlier. And they were following up. They were going through the process.
but Quinn was really the guy at the top or very near the top of the list.
And my contention, and I believe this to be true, given where Ben Johnson's head was in the
moment, if he had gone through with that interview, I don't think Washington would have offered
him the job.
I think they would have offered the job to Dan Quinn.
One thing is 100% true.
Dan Quinn, as many people suggested in the moment and even still do, was never
their fifth choice or fourth choice or ninth choice.
He was one or one A.
And it's very possible that the other part of
1-1A was never Ben Johnson.
It could have been somebody like Mike McDonald.
Or Rahim Morris, who they really liked
when they interviewed him. Not as much maybe as Quinn,
but they liked Morris a lot. Morris gave him the ultimatum,
remember. He said,
Atlanta's going to offer me. If you're going to offer me, you got to do it now. And they said,
we're not ready to offer you the job. And so he took the Atlanta job. Quinn so highly
respected has put together a hell of a staff. And year one in Washington went pretty well. Now,
would it have gone as well without Jaden Daniels? Probably not. But they still would have had a hell
of a staff. And they would have, I think, been in the midst of building something. By the way,
After watching Monday night football and Caleb Williams with Ben Johnson,
Ben Johnson should have begged for the job here.
Should have begged for it, knowing that they were going to take Jaden Daniels.
Anyway, injury report for tomorrow night.
So Tress Way is being called, hold on, where is it?
He is questionable for the game tomorrow night with a back injury.
Dietrich Wise has a knee. He is questionable.
Noah Brown was DNP for Wednesday's practice today, as was Austin Echler.
Actually, Echler was listed as limited, but neither received a status designation, meaning neither received, you know, questionable or, you know, another one of the, you know, or out.
I think it's now questionable, out, or they're in.
So Washington actually signed a punter to their practice squad,
veteran punter Mitch Wishnowski,
who was a fourth-round pick by guess who,
the San Francisco 49ers in 2019.
By the way, their third round pick from last year or the year before,
two years ago, Jake Moody, they did release him.
He's a terrible kicker.
He's like 11 of his last 22,
and he missed multiple kicks in their win
on Sunday against the Seahawks.
So I think Adam Peters may have had something to do with that pick.
Who knows?
But Washington did protect themselves by adding a veteran punter to the practice squad
in the event the Tressway can't go.
Everybody else appears to be good to go.
Can't wait for the game tomorrow night.
All right.
Last thing on the show today, because I just saw this before I started to record the podcast today.
The NBA is implementing a rule change for the upcoming 2025-2020s season.
The rule change is that any missed or unsuccessful end-of-period,
heave, as in a very long shot,
will now be recorded as a missed field goal attempt for the team, not the player.
What took you so long?
I know a lot of you don't watch the NBA,
but let me just explain to you what has happened over the years.
And I'm talking for a long time now.
Players get the ball in the back court at the end of a quarter, end of a half,
and instead of throwing it the length of the court,
heaving it towards the basket with the possibility that it might go in
and you might get three points,
they hold the ball or dribble it out because they don't want it to impact their field goal percentage.
Because, you know, there are bonuses and different things tied, I guess, to those things.
And they don't shoot it.
It's been just maddening to watch over the years.
Like, are you kidding me?
Like, inbound pass into the back court with two seconds to go and they just dribble the clock out
instead of trying to heave one up from three-quarters court or near half-court?
It's insane how many times you would watch that and you would think, my God, how selfish.
But players did it and they've been doing it for a long period of time.
Now, for stat-keeping purposes, the NBA will tell teams that any shot taken within the final three seconds of the first three quarters
and is launched from at least 36 feet away on any play that starts in the back court
will count as a team shot attempt, not an individual one.
So if you're moving from the back court into the front court and you end up shooting from
36 feet away, which would be in the front court, it will count as a team shot attempt
in the final three seconds of the first three quarters.
Obviously, at the end of games, if you're losing by a point, if it's tied or you're down a point two or three, you're going to heave it.
You're not going to let the clock run out and lose the game.
Or if you're up, you'll dribble the clock out.
They're not going to worry about fourth quarter issues.
First three quarters, you know, anything from 36 feet or more away, and the 36 feet away would have to be, you know, something that starts in the back court.
team shot attempt, not an individual shot attempt.
That is really a good rules change.
By the way, according to sport radar, players last season made about 4% of shots
taken in the final three seconds of the first three quarters of a game with the 36-foot minimum
distance.
Steph Curry made four shots under that criteria last year.
and Nicola Yokic made three.
So we will see now in the NBA
if there's second and a half left
at the end of the first quarter,
they'll inbound it into the back court
and somebody's going to heave it towards the rim.
All right, that's it for the show today.
Back tomorrow with Tommy,
previewing tomorrow night's Washington Green Bay game.
I'll have my keys to a win.
Prediction on the game.
Tommy will have his prediction as well.
