Is it a substation or a bad training and medical staff, boys? The team's in trouble again, especially early. Yeah, the injuries are mounting, Tommy, with this football team. You know, and not, let me just say, this is typical, you know, you look at the rest of the league. There are a lot of players that aren't necessarily practicing and they're banged up, and there are serious injuries out there. The one very serious injury for Washington, obviously, was the loss of Laramie Tunsell. but we learned yesterday that Johnny Newton is going to get surgery for the peck injury,

and he's going to be out for quite a while as well. Yeah. He's a loss there. He's a stiff. What? He's a stiff. No great loss. He's been a disappointment.

Yeah, he's been a disappointment. Let me put my kind hat on. It's been a disappointment. appointment. Yeah, I mean, when you're... I haven't been a fan from the get-go. Why haven't you been a fan from the get-go? Well, I just, I mean, one thing, he had that he wasn't healthy even after they drafted him.

Right. They drafted him unhealthy, you think. Well, he was coming off the defensive player of the year award in the Big Ten. He was really a good college football player. It doesn't mean that you're going to be a great professional. player and obviously he's missed games. He's had some issues with being healthy. Yeah, there's no doubt about it. And this was a big year for him coming into the year. And then he had, and then he had a preseason game in which he at least, I couldn't care less about the performance in a preseason

game, but he gave ammo to those people that actually think these preseason games mean something by not necessarily showing well. Yeah, I mean, he got, he got blown out, I think, on one play. Yeah. Look, there are big injuries around the league. I mean, this happens every summer leading into the NFL season. You know, Washington is still in pretty good shape because number five is still healthy. And now, by the way, it appears as if there's a chance.

chance he might play. Quinn was asked this morning before practice whether or not, you know, he would play. He said, I don't have an answer for you on Jaden, but he did say that starters, several starters, will play against the Lions. And I think part of it is because of some of the missing pieces this week, they weren't able to have the two practices that were fully padded. with enough contact for him to feel like they were getting enough work. And I mean, why not play against the Lions?

You know, if he feels like the team needs physical contact, like they actually need to play some football before they play football for real on September 13th, you know, you've got two more opportunities. And, you know, most would say that because they're going to joint practice with the Ravens two days before the final preseason game, that the final preseason game is out, but Saturday's not out. So go ahead and play them.

No. No, I mean, I agree. I agree with that. So, but if Marriota was hurt, was not hurt, do you think we'd see, Jaden? Well, we talked about this the other day. Personally, I don't think it should matter. He's going to be ready, they believe, by September 13th for the regular season. By the way, he's missed time the last two pre-seasones here. Yes, he has.

So I'm not really concerned about that. That wouldn't dictate for me the answer. Now, part of the answer for me would include, I want to see my quarterback with the new center. But the new center's hurt again, Allegrety. And so he's not going to play in the preseason game against Detroit. But I don't know. That center position is going to be very interesting between now and September 13th.

Oh, yes. Because Nick Allegretti was, you know, the answer for them. They cut Tyler Beaudish loose. Now Tyler Beaudish is seriously injured. Yeah, I saw that. And you've got a situation where Allegrety and Jaden Daniels together are likely not going to participate against another team until the opener on September 13th. Now, I guess Aligretti could be healthy for the joint practice against the Ravens next week. I guess that is still in play.

I wanted to read this because this kind of dovetails off of what we were just talking about, because I saved this in case it made sense to read it. It's from District Sports Talk, who tweets both of us a lot, I think. I was listening to Scott McLuhan on Kevin Sheehan's pod recently. Scott was unsure of AP's, Adam Peters, I for scouting talent. So far, can't say Scott was wrong. There's a lot of Adam Peters, you know, criticism right now. Johnny Newton's a part of that.

You know, Johnny Newton was picked in the very, very beginning stages of the second round. That was the second draft pick he made. Johnny Newton was a guy that they said was they didn't expect to be on their board. He was the highest rated player on their board. And it is true. He was mocked in a lot of mock drafts end of the first round. And then there were plenty that had him going after the first round. I was actually excited about the pick because I watched Johnny Newton in college at Illinois

because I watched college football and the Big Ten in particular. and he was a real kind of havoc-reaking defensive lineman. Not healthy, hasn't played enough, going to miss more time. So the first pick, Jaden Daniels, didn't play a lot of football last year because he was injured. And Johnny Newton hasn't played a lot football and looks like he's not going to play this year because he's been injured a lot. So people are really picking apart the Adam Peters drafts. And I've had callers pick apart everything that Adam Peters has done.

I actually think Adam Peters overall, if you take the overall, he's done a pretty good job. And I think he did a pretty good job this offseason. And as far as the drafts go, you know, last year's draft, if Connerley Jr. Trey Amos, Jacori-Crossky, Merritt, and Jalen Lane all continue to contribute as starters, or in the case of Lane, as special teams punt returner, that's four hours. out of five. Cain Madrano being the other, he's still on the team. That's an 80% hit rate in a draft. That's unheard of for the most part. And then this year's draft, we'll see about Sunny Stiles and Antonio Williams. They're very high on Joshua Joseph's so far. And they, K-Tron Allen.

And yeah, that first draft, you know, it might be one of those drafts that with all those players. Jaden Daniels ends up being the guy, which we knew, and that there are others that are contributors, but not necessarily stars. I mean, they had, you know, six picks in the top 100. McCaffrey hasn't done much. Coleman's done a lot. Senate hasn't done much. Sandra still looked great as a rookie. Johnny Newton hasn't done much, and Jaden Daniels obviously was a rookie at a year. You know, I think I've read somewhere. I glanced at it. I should have read it closer.

But I think Dan Quinn mentioned the rookie center that they drafted. Yeah, Matt Goldman. Yeah, out of Michigan State. He could have wind up being their starting center? I don't know. This, you know, it's funny. About two weeks ago, I had Logan Paulson on the show. may have been last week on one of the days you were out.

But Logan's the second person, Steve Suter being the first, that's mentioned, you know, the center position, it's really not that important. They really, Logan did it and Suter did it at one point during the season, really minimized the center position. And they didn't minimize it from like a communication and it's important for your center to be smart and to be a good communicator. they minimized it as an offensive line position from a physical standpoint. And that's...

I get that. I get that, but... I'd never really heard that before. How come when centers are really good, they usually are heralded, I mean, as part of, like, the leaders of the offensive line. They're most important offensive. But like, you know, like Jason Kelsey in Philly. the guy Mike Webster in Pittsburgh

we were talking about the 76 dealers the other day centers are very good I mean the guy in the guy with the Indianapolis Colts supposed to be a great center I forget his name now

you're talking about Quentin Nelson he's actually a guard I mean he's one of the best guards in the NFL but you're right about like centers historically in the league and probably more so from way back in the day.

But guys like, you know, like Dwight Stevenson, you know, all-time legend, Mike Webster, all-time legend, Jim Otto double zeros, Tommy, with the Raiders, an all-time legend. Jeff Bostic, an all-time hog legend for sure. Should mention Len Haas, too. I would say those are the two greatest centers in franchise history. seems right, right? Len Hauss and Jeff Bostic, am I missing anybody? No, you're right, you're right. So that means they can stick this rookie in there and it shouldn't be a problem. I don't know about that. I mean, if they were so convinced on Nick Allegretti, then, well, if they were so convinced on Nick Alligretti when they cut Tyler Beaudish, they wouldn't have gone after Tyler Linderbaum because they did go after Tyler Linderbom.

And he ended up getting an insane amount of money from the Raiders, and they, they, you know, decided to, you know, back off because it was insane money for a center. Yeah. But I will say about Tyler Linderbaum. What I had heard is that Tyler Linderbaum, they loved because he was legitimately an A-plus interior offensive lineman. Like, guard center doesn't matter. They wanted another great player on their office. offensive line. The fact that he played center was just a bonus because they needed a center. But they considered him to be, and I think everybody in the league considered him to be the elite

center that was available in one of the elite centers in the game. And so we said it at the time. Nick Allegretti was plan B. Tyler Linderbaum was plan A. And the number got too high. And Nick Allegretti was plan B. And unfortunately, Allegretti's been injured. and it's hurting them right now because they're not getting a lot of reps, the quarterback in the new center. No, no, they're not. And you might end up with Matt Gulbin as a rookie center against Philadelphia against Jalen Carter and Jordan Davis in his first game.

See how important the center position is against the Eagles. Yeah. Yeah, I, I, uh, this isn't like the most you know crazy injury situation not even in the league this off season it's just that off of last season with what happened you know this is kind of like oh god here we go again you know johnny newton tonsil rashad white uh by the way he did not get uh he did not hurt his hamstring um in the als ice bucket challenge uh as somebody pointed out on social media. He actually heard it in the joint practice last week. He's not going to play against Detroit. I think he's going to be a significant player, by the way, on the team.

I just do. And Dan Helley said that on the podcast yesterday. But, yeah, I mean, Trey Amos, you know, he's been missing. They've just had a lot of guys. Caleb-on-Chayson's out, settle. McNichols is on injured reserve. Jordan McGee came up lame. Marcus Mariotta.

You know, John Bates really hasn't been available, although now he's working his way back in. Oway had a calf injury. It's, you know, it makes the preparation for the season harder, but at this point, other than Tunsel and Newton, everybody else appears to be good to go for the regular season, but they still have another couple of weeks, including two preseason games. So we'll see. Yeah, Johnny Newton's injury, three to four months, is the typical timeline for a surgery to repair a torn peck muscle.

So they do have some players there, though. Let me just mention, you know, they added... Yes, they too. They added Tim Settle. They added Charles Menehue. They like 79 shy tuddle. You know, you got Payne and Kinlaw, and it's a base three-four. They like the guy Ricky Barber, number 50.

And Byron Cowert played well, not against good competition, but they've got some players on defense. There's more options. I think Adam Peters did a good job of adding a lot of bodies and a lot of bodies that are younger, faster, and better than what they had a year ago. Let's hope it all works out and they're all available and ready to go. But big blow for Johnny Newton's prospects of being around for a four,

season. He'll be under contract as a rookie next year. So I would imagine he's back next year, but yeah, he's missing out on a big opportunity. What else did you have? What's your plans to watch the exhibition game on Saturday, a preseason game? Are you going to watch it, right? Yes. Are you interested, excited? No. I hate these preseason games. I hate preseason, but I am excited about watching this game. Why? I mean, because I haven't watched a football game.

I haven't been that many. I didn't watch the first preseason game. I didn't watch the Hall fame game. So, I mean, I've got the itch. Okay. I'm ready to watch. I mean, I would, what could add a little bit of intrigue is if the starters end up playing. Like, you know, Quinn was asked today, Ben asked him the question about sort of, you know, what's the benefit gained from playing starters like a series or two versus the risk associated with putting him out there?

And Quinn, Quinn's had a couple of answers here during camp. I don't know if you've listened or read them. It's like, I'm not sure he really answered the question. And he didn't really answer that one, but he talked about customizing it, meaning, you know, every player is different. You know, as much as I'd like to see the starters play in sort of dress rehearsal form, I also don't and can't figure out or quantify or even, you know, from a quality standpoint, describe what the benefit of playing a series or two is. Like, that's not football either.

You know, a football game typically... You're not running your plays, you know, you're just running base packages. not running what you're going to put out there. So it's not like you're getting practiced with what you're really going to use. And it's not like you forgot to play football all of a sudden, and you need to be reminded how. I would think there's some benefit in actually getting tackled and tackling others, which you really don't do at any point anymore,

rather than having that be, the Philadelphia game be the first time that you're out there tackling. You know, I don't think that we talked about this, but I had Jordan Dejani from CBSSports.com on the radio show yesterday, and he lives in Nashville. And Robert Sala, the new head coach of the Titans, is apparently planning on playing starters for up to a half in this game and maybe beyond a half in the final preseason game.

So he's going to try something that nobody's done in years to try to get his team ready. Let's just see who they play. They play Seattle. He's going to do it against Seattle on Sunday and then the Bears next Saturday. That's what his plan is. Look, they're a bad football team. He's a new coach. And, you know, these players can get.

get injured at any point. I do kind of wonder, like, to a series or two, I mean, that's not football. You're not, you know, there's no game planning. We know that. You just, you know, mention that again. And there's no adjusting to whatever happened on the first or second drive. You know, one drive or two drives is not an evaluation for a player, really, you know, especially a proven player. I mean, Jaden Daniels, let's go back to the Chargers game last year in the regular season. It was his first game back after getting injured against the Packers. And the first two drives of that game, if you remember, were hideous. It was like, oh, boy, he doesn't look good.

And then the rest of the game was lights out. It was him 2024 style. And they're down 10-0 and then all of a sudden, you know, they roll off the next 27 points or, whatever and win the game and he had an outstanding a game against the Chargers. And the point is, is that, is a series or two just to get out there and get the feel of it and get snaps and get your new coordinator and your headset and communicating

and maybe take a hit, you don't want Jaden to take a hit? I don't know. I don't know what the, it's above my pay grade to really know whether or not these players truly need something like that. I think it's kind of archaic because really preseason football started for two reasons, I think. One, to literally get the players in shape because, you know, it was not a year-round conditioning program in the old NFL. A lot of these players worked as car salesmen in the wintertime. And I think the other thing was to promote the team.

I mean, they would play exhibition games, preseason games, in like different parts of the country sometimes. Yeah. Thanks, Grandpa, for reminding us of all that. They played six of them. Well, so my point is that was the purpose these games served. They no longer serve that purpose. So what's the point?

You know what? I have now knowing what Tennessee is planning on doing, I think maybe the answer is you either go all in because you're getting guys to play football to get them ready to build, Quinn used this term the other day, to build up the calluses that sometimes it takes a week or two of regular season football to build up.

And you're, you know, you've hit more, you've been tackled more, you've gone through it, and you're ready for regular season physical, you know, football. rather than, you know, I haven't done this since last December or last January. Yeah. Or you just don't play them at all. I mean, because really one series, two series, I mean, I know I've been asking for that from the starters Saturday. But I just, does it really provide anything of value?

I don't know. You know, I know they'd probably say, well, the preparation of getting ready for a game. Who knows? You're not game planning. And then if you have your starters out there like Salah's going to do in the last two games, you're playing a bunch of dudes from quarter two on for the most part who aren't going to be in the league. So what are you proving there? Yeah.

And, you know, we often see the preseason star, the player who stands out, and becomes a fan favorite, and they almost never make the team. No, of course not. And not only that, you know, this is something that I'm sure we've talked about at some point in the past, but neither one of us will remember saying it. When you're in there as a starter against some fourth string guy who's a long shot to make the team, that guy's playing for a paycheck. He doesn't care who you are.

he's going to try to, he, he's going for it. And so that, I mean, now that's a regular season environment, but you don't, you might be dealing with some people who are willing to take the kind of chances that typically you don't see in preseason games. That may be a good thing, but it also may be a higher risk thing. I'm going to watch the game Saturday. Of course I am. I'm going to, you know, take notes like I always do.

do a recap of the game on the evaluation of some players. If Jaden plays in the game, there's more intrigue. But, man, the bottom line is these games are horrific. Horific. I think I mentioned this on the podcast. I know he did on the radio. I read from Aaron Rogers. He was asked about if he was going to play against the Packers last week.

And he said, I don't know. And I don't care. He said, preseason football isn't real football. And he said, and these joint practices have become not. real football as well. He said all that's happened now is teams aren't showing normal stuff that they're going to use in the regular season because they're just as afraid that it's going to get stolen and used.

And then these joint practices always break out and fights anyway. And I don't know if you saw the Cowboys and the Saints the other day. Yeah. I hate this. I remember my most memorable joint practice. The Texans, you and I were doing the show together. No, it wasn't the Texans. It was the Patriot.

Well, I remember that, too, yeah. I mean, because that's when the veil was dropped on RG3. Oh, my God. That was part of it. Remember that? Of course I do. Yes. That's when all the Patriots players could talk about was how unimpressive he was.

it was so the Houston joint practice in Richmond was the one that ended in that brawl but the one the Patriots one I remember it for the reason you just said the other reason and I forget if you walked over with me did you walk over when Brady was being interviewed by all of the media were you with me I just remember thinking my God he is huge Because he is. He's a big dude. Like Peyton Manning's a big dude too. I remember being, you know, surprised at how big of a dude he actually was. He's a physical guy. Yeah. And just big, you know, it's 6'5 or, you know, and whatever. But, uh, yes, it was the last day we were there, I was driving back up 95, listening to Brian and, and coach, I guess. And Brian said, because we didn't hear, I didn't, I hadn't heard the Patriots in their opinion.

The Patriots made Washington look like, you know, a ninth grade team, a freshman team in those joint practices. And Brian, he just laid in to our G3. He just said, because this was 2014, right? This would have been 2014. Yes, this was 24. This was not all in for week one. This was the year after that. Now, remember, at that point, we all had been hearing

and we knew a lot of what had been going on behind the scenes and how players and coaches, et cetera, you know, sort of felt about him. But Brian, I remember just described, you know, basically seven on seven where the offense was being shown what the defense was going to run, and he was still holding on to the ball. And he's like, what is he doing? This is seven on seven against a carded defense. He knows what they're running.

How is that ball still in his hands? This guy hasn't progressed at all. Brian went off. I remember listening to that. And I think we ended up having them on the show because I listened to it and I said, we've got to get Brian on the show on Monday or whatever. And, of course, it ended up being,

the harbinger of things to come. Yes, it did. Yeah. I mean, will you ever forget Jake Rudin's quotes about him, you know, down the road of that season where he just, in that NFL.com, I think it was Albert Breer,

somebody, where he just laid into his starting quarterback worse than I've ever seen a head coach do it publicly. I've never seen that. Speaking of RG3, There's something I just wanted to mention. So what's your RG3 story? Well, I mean, again, it's just a stupid little thing. Okay. But it shows some of the fallout from this Jaden Daniels number five, you know, story. Yep. Is I'm getting physical therapy from my right shoulder because I got calcification in my right shoulder. Mm-hmm. And the physical therapist knows I'm a sports or knows who I am.

Mm-hmm. So the other day, you know, he's working on my shoulder and he says to me, so is Jaden Daniels RG3 2.0. And what did you say? I said no. But, I mean, but that's a bit alarming that that's the conversation among an average football fan. He's a commander's fan. Not a huge fan.

But, I mean, that just illustrates. This franchise is not that far removed from the days of chaos. And you have new ownership that's trying to dig its way out of the pit that this team lived in for years. And just some stupid little thing like this can set them back. You know? Basically, I mean, I know we've talked about this before. But, you know, and people will dismiss whatever damage could be done by the whole number five LSU controversy.

But to have the face of your franchise be the number one joke on social media is not good for anything to do with your football organization. That's the best point that's been made all week long. because it's not even about the franchise, but they're linked because the quarterback of the franchise is at the center of, you know, is literally he's been leading with his chin since last Wednesday, and he became the biggest punching bag on the internet and on social media over a four or five day period.

By the way, they keep coming. They keep coming. I get all the time. No, let me just say I'm getting all the time but it started with the injury stuff is Jaden Daniels just RG3 2.0 because of the injury stuff

and you know that that's that brought up RG3 vibes and then what happened last week with the mother and I think everybody understands the mother is a big part of this story major RG3

vibes. I think they're totally opposite of one another, both personally and professionally. I don't even think their games are very similar. I've said this a million times, but Jaden Daniels is a much more polished NFL quarterback than RG3 ever was and probably was ever going to be. Obviously, one's an introvert, one is an extrovert and massively self-absorbed. It's not Jaden Daniels at all. You can't find one person. I challenge any one of you to find one person that's been close to this organization over the last two years that has a negative thing to say about Jaden Daniels or even has just one of those things where they would say, yeah, he's great, but, you know, part of what

you see isn't necessary. No, there's none of that. That was every day with RG3. No, no, what you're hearing and what you're seeing isn't exactly. And then all of a sudden, you know, the hashtag, you know, parade. And we're going to play football our way. Now that Shadahan's gone. We're going to play football our way. You know, that was, that was hashtag, we're going to play the way we want to play.

There was something actually, there was a hashtag that he, I think, tried to mark that had to do with, we're doing it our way. I forget it specifically what it was. But, um. Really. No, I agree with you that the person and the player are not at all connected. But I agree with you that, and this is why, you know, and I read something yesterday that somebody sent, which was good, somebody basically wrote, oh, you'll actually like this. Ken from Palm Beach, Florida wrote,

Kevin, I'm a skins fan through and through. Please ignore the idiots that think the Daniels story is a nothing burger. It was full-on custom blend Shelley's burger. And then he wrote, this was a major peak inside our franchise quarterback's inner circle, and it's not pretty. We learned that contract negotiations with his agent slash mother will be difficult next year,

and they will be very public. We also know now more than ever that Jaden isn't in control of his inner circle. His mother is the boss and his Uber male teammates could lose respect for him if he doesn't get control. I don't know about that last part, but it was a major. That's a stretch. Yeah, but it was confirmation with this major peak inside the inner circle of what some have been saying, especially recently. and yeah, those, I agree, the people that, the pom-pom waivers that would love Larry Michael's show to be back on the air, they can't stand any of this talk because they think it's, you know, fake and initiated by the media.

But your point's the best point, and that is, it doesn't matter if it has anything to do with the franchise. it's associated with two places right now. Washington and Baton Rouge, LSU and the commanders, because that's where he's been and that's where he's played. And so people will say because they're reading all this, what's this guy? Is this RG3 2.0? What's going on here?

And I don't think he had anything to do with it. But yeah, it's true. But right now, We get to watch and play football in a few weeks. And LSU is, you know, stuck with, you know, one of their greatest players of all time having a relationship that's been severed for the time being. We'll see how it plays out.

I had somebody on from Baton Rouge the other day on radio. And, man, I mean, he went after the mother. He went after the whole psychology of it, you know. But he also believed that, and he said what would be really sad, is if Jaden isn't a part of LSU moving forward. That's a big deal, you know, for him to be able to come back and be a part of this. And he is, he was one of the great players in the history. He made the point to Joe Burrow is, you know, at a different level because he won a national

championship. But he also felt like Joe Burroughs jersey had that player asked for number nine or the, Bryce Underwood, the quarterback that committed to LSU and ended up at Michigan, If Underwood had come to LSU as the number one quarterback in the country and said, I want to wear number nine, that Brian Kelly probably would have promised it to him too. Because you're trying, you know, all due respect to Joe Burrow and Jaden Daniels, you're trying to win the next national championship. And recruiting is a big part of it.

But anyway, enough of that. I mean, I'm actually, I hope we, like I said, the key is, did the surrounding inner circle learn their lesson? If they did, great. It was a harsh lesson, but hopefully it's not repeated. If they didn't learn their lesson, there will be another distraction down the road somewhere. Yeah. All right. Sounds like you're writing about this, about the RG3, Jaden Daniels thing.

Well, I'm not writing about the RG Street, Jaden Daniels. In fact, I didn't even clue that in my column for tomorrow. But I'm trying to alert people that this. This is that this impacts the organization. I mean, you know, for an organization that is trying to get the rest of the world to take them seriously, to have their star player become a joke. Yeah. It's not, it's damaging.

Is it football damaging? It's all connected. I don't think it's football damaging unless somehow he's, really reeling from it, which I don't get the sense that he is. You know, you just reminded me of something that I did without you while you were gone. Nielsen, as in Nielsen, you know, the media news company ratings, the whole thing. They created the inaugural NFL fandom index. It was a comprehensive study where they tried to identify the NFL.

market that was the most passionate about the NFL, which, you know, in most of these markets means they're most passionate about their local team. And out of 30 NFL markets, because New York and the Bay Area each have two teams, Washington was 21st. You know, a lot of the, you know, single team or two sports franchise markets, smaller markets like Buffalo, Green Bay, Kansas City. They were at the top of the list. In fact, Buffalo, Casey, Green Bay were one, two, and three. Cincinnati was four. That was a stunner to me. And Philadelphia was five. Now, it was based on, I'll give you the, where's the criteria? I had it here. And now I don't have this up in front of me. But the criteria dealt with TV numbers, streaming numbers, apparel, you know, sales.

social media following, betting content. It was a lot of different things that they measured. And essentially, you know, they came up with their top 30 list. And Washington was 21st. And I pointed out that you now have to go back probably 20 years to find this. It's been that long, like 2006. But in 2006, I think that that was, if it wasn't 2006, it was, 2005, 2004, where actually the Redskins under Snyder generated more revenue than the Cowboys did.

Every other season, since that was measured, the Cowboys have been number one in revenue generation, but there was one year where Washington was at the top. And if you go back 20 years where you didn't have social media or streaming or any of that, but if you went with straight TV numbers, local TV numbers, and that's what Nielsen was looking at, local TV numbers, Washington would have been in the top five. You know, they were very much like a smaller one-team market. Yeah, there was no baseball team here back then. Yeah, there was, they were really an NBA team.

No, I'm kidding. Right. Yeah, no, so that's, that's. That's the, you know, the evaporation as Snyder chased away two-thirds of the fan base from essentially, you know, 2005, 2006 on. And to your point, this is what new ownership is trying to build back up. And, you know, they're doing a nice job, but they're obviously not anywhere near where they need to be or where they hope to be. And it's a very difficult job. Yeah.

It's a very deep hole to dig out of. And I give them credit for, I think, doing pretty much the right thing so far. I give Mark Klaus a lot of credit for being part of that. Did you see that the hail to the commanders, you know, put back in Braves on the Warpath? I wanted to talk to you about that. That seems big to me. Why do that? Why do that?

Well, I think... Why invite that? Because they are... inching back and they're trying to take back as much as they can and unfortunately the biggie the name itself is you know going to be I think a bit too much to to to to handle that that's not something that's really within their ability to do on their own I mean you're talking about the league you're talking about the league's biggest sponsors. I've been saying this for a while. I thought the old uniforms eventually with this

new ownership group would come back. They have the, you know, minus the logo. I still think that the old logos in play at some point. So they're doing the right things. They're doing what they can. I still personally believe, but I don't have all the information that they believe. I still believe that changing the name to something would have been better than doing nothing. But I acknowledge how much of a challenge it is. And, yeah, I don't know. You know, I got, during this. You know, I think all it does is just wet the appetite of the people who want the name to come back,

which I think results in frustration. You know, so I'm not, I mean, I'm not sure a clean break, which they inherited still isn't the best way to go. Oh, no, I like what they're doing. You know I do. I mean, watching the game the other night. But I'm not a fan.

Watching the game the other night in seeing, because last year when they wore their championship uniforms as alt uniforms, they wore the whites at home against Denver and Dallas. Being in the burgundy with the white pants, the championship uniform, minus the logo on the helmet.

I understand the difference. But it looked like my football team. and I think that I'm going to connect to that a lot. And I think fans will too because I, look, it's it all, the name was number one, but it all came with the package, the new name, the new hideous uniforms, the new song, you know, all of it. You know, all of these, you know, emotional branded things change so dramatically. And so they were super smart to do what they did with the.

uniforms. You know, I saw the, you know, people going nuts with the Braves on the war path. I mean, I think the biggest problem they're going to have with the old logo on a helmet is it doesn't really play into the team name. So there's a bit of a disconnect there, unless you want to talk about commanders and Native American commanders. But, yeah, I mean, they're doing everything that is they can do. without the league or without major public backlash from, you know, the people that are invested in, you know, Washington's old name being racist, et cetera, I think they're going to do. You know, the uniforms don't offend anybody, the old uniforms. Braves on the warpath, I mean, they didn't announce they were doing it, so they probably think that, you know,

there's not going to be a lot of pushback to that. Yeah, I know. That seems like a pretty significant step. Well, what do you? Well, ask you, what do you think it's leading towards? You know, I agree with what you say. I just don't see a path where they could ever go back to the name. Because when you do that, even though you win back a lot of the fans,

you might as well just open up a building. on their headquarters devoted to the next 50 years of fighting the people that want to get rid of the name. Yeah. Which is what they had to do for 50 years before it finally happened. I just found what I, during the show the other day. Off of that thing we talked about the other day, the teams, the best teams, the best teams, never to make the Super Bowl. I did a segment on radio

where I took calls on the best Redskins team to not make the Super Bowl. I was listening to that. Okay. So during that segment, because Redskins was mentioned so many times by callers and me, I got this from

Angela. She sent me, Kevin, it doesn't seem to bother you to use the team's past racist name so casually. Maybe consider how a offensive it is to many Native Americans the next time you use it. Those people are out there. And this is the fact that this ownership group doesn't have to take it away. They entered with it already gone. They're not going to put it back into the barn and then deal with people like Angela

who are ill-informed. Of course it would bother me to use a past racist name if I knew it bothered Native Americans. But all of the evidence over the years is that other than your typical 10 to 15, 20% of people that are offended by almost anything, Native Americans haven't had a problem with it. I don't need to get into this. That's not the purpose of it. But it was to say to you, you know, it's not just people like her. It's their top 10 sponsors. That's what I was told over and over again as it relates to the name over the last couple of years. The Amazon's and the coax and the McDonald's and the Bank of Americas and whatever else, all of them, they're just not going to go for it. They're going to

be dead set against it because they're going to have to deal with their shareholders having a problem with them being a massive investor and partner with a league that has a racist team nickname. So it's not, that's not going to happen.

But do I see a day in which the old Blackie Wetzel logo is back in circulation? Yes, I see that at some point because that was never offensive to anybody. Whether it ends up on the side of a helmet or not, I don't know. But anyway, all right, that wasn't our intention. But Braves on the Worthpath, everybody. We didn't talk about that yet, you and I. And there are so many of those flights that Churchill had to take during the war. first of all to France early in the war when the French were not completely taken over yet and he was trying to get them to fight a little bit more as the Germans were storming through the countryside through Paris. There were flights to Tehran where he and Roosevelt and Stalin first got together during the war. I mean, there were a lot of those very high-risk flights and trips that Churchill took,

and by the way, that Roosevelt took. And it wasn't easy for Roosevelt to take some of those trips because of his polio. and the fact that he was wheelchair bound. Yeah, cigars, Churchill, high altitude, oxygen mask, probably wouldn't have been the best thing to spark up in that moment. How about Cade Cavali, Tommy? This guy is on an absolute role. Last night, 10 strikeouts in the first four innings.

He ended up with 11 after he didn't come out for the 7th. He struck out 11 in six innings complete, allowed three hits, no earned runs. This is the start after he had a no hitter through into the 7th against the Cubs. That also was a double-digit strikeout game. He had 10 strikeouts against the Cubs in the game that they won 7 to nothing. Last week he went eight innings and that one allowed just one hit. he's a legitimate ace, right? I said before the season started, I've said a number of times.

If Kaye Cavali is healthy, he's an ace, and he's been healthy. He's been healthy. You know, finally, after a couple years, he's been healthy, and he is an ace, absolutely. And, you know, he's fun to watch. He's fun to watch, but the National Spartan has said. were fun to watch, although they did win. Yeah, they won last night. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.

I like watching him pitch, too. There's a cool, calm, poised guy there that, you know, he's, he's worth watching right now because the rest of it isn't. You wrote a great column that is out and I just retweeted it. And I actually talked this morning, too, just about how. man, you know, how many teams legitimately at this point in the season have two really high-level starting pitchers and can combine it with one of the top offensive lineups in the league? That's where they were two and a half weeks ago and they were in contention. and they decided that that wasn't something that they were interested in.

No, no. I don't think, like I said in the column, I don't think Paul Tabani had in his plans when he took over had winning in the first year on his agenda. Yeah, Tom's column's totally worth reading. He's catching up on all he missed when he was summering in multiple spots throughout the country. Not out of the country, but in the country. Yeah, I just, we've talked about it a lot, but it was just a major buzzkill. And like you said, that one line from him where, you know,

he essentially says the people who really, really understand, they know. But the rest of us were just hoping that maybe the fun little season and journey we were on could continue for a little bit longer, but they decided not to allow. Look, I think if they split with the Braves heading into the trade deadline, I think Foster Griffin's still here. I don't know about Luis Garcia Jr. Foster Griffin's pitching great. Two one-earned run performances in a row for Cleveland. Louis Garcia Jr. has not been great. It's not done well. But new pitching, new league, the whole thing. Doesn't mean that. he would have tailed off here.

Right. You know, this, you talked about it being a zombie, you know, fan base that was briefly, you know, awake for what was going on. And just, you know, overnight, basically, it's zombie-esque again. These guys better be right with what they decided to do,

meaning they better be in contention next year or the year after for a playoff spot. If we were to get beyond, if we get into 2028 and they stink, this was just an opportunity that they blew off for no reason. You know, if they were competitive this year for most of the season. But then, you know, I don't think they're going to keep C.J. Abrams. This is crazy. Come on.

I just don't think they're going to. keep him. How can't you keep you have to keep him? If you think you're getting close, this guy is one of the best offensive, you know, infield hitters in baseball. I know. How could you get rid of one of your best offensive players? Because of the package he would get. This is a guy who would bring back a significant package player. Great. He's a great player. He's not a great defensive player, but he's a great offensive player. He made a great defensive play last night. He hasn't made the move to second base yet.

I know. Why haven't they done it yet? I don't know. I'm strange. Nunez is still there at second. I watched some of the game last night. He actually made a great play, a great defensive play in the game. I mean,

baseball is just weird, man. I get it, and I know I don't know enough about it. I'm sure that what they're doing in the value. you they're getting back and, you know, is giving them their best chance to be a legitimate, you know, World Series contender for a long period of time, like what we had in the 2010s, you know, over an eight-year span going to the postseason five times, winning a World Series. I know they think that they are doing that. There are no guarantees with it.

And I just think they had a nice little surprise that they weren't expecting. And given the state of the franchise being in. zombie land in terms of the fan base. Maybe they should have ridden it out a little bit longer. I think they should have. You know, I mean, they could be Tampa or

they could wind up being Baltimore. You know, still rebuilding, still trying to find their way. And like we've talked about, when the opportunities come along, I think, particularly this team, you have to grab it. But you're right, next

year, I mean, if they keep Abrams, they should be competitive again. But it's going to be awfully tempting because next, he still has two years of control if you trade him.

And that's like the Soto mark. When they traded Soto, the season wasn't over, but it was, you know, it was like at the trade deadline. And he had two and a half seasons. of control. You know, they did not do that.

They hung on to him at the trading deadline, but he still has significant value this off-season. Once you play that out, and then you go into next year, he's only got one-year control. The return is not as great. Right. Now, he's signable.

I mean, although I don't know what this move to second base would do for that, but he's not a boy. client. James Wood, who has been hurt, is not signable. Yeah, by the way, you know, that injury would have really hurt their opportunities had they kept Garcia Jr. and kept Foster Griffin with the injury to Wood keeping him out. I mean, they've missed him obviously. By the way, you mentioned, you know, they could be Tampa. They could be Baltimore. Did you say, see the Orioles and how they got robbed last night on Pete Alonzo's home run that was called a foul

bowl? I mean, I caught up some of it on social media, but I didn't see it. Well, it's out there everywhere. It's so obviously inside the left field foul pole, and they went to replay and said that they didn't have video evidence to overturn the call on the field. It was one of the worst, like, replay situations I've ever seen. I don't know what they were looking at. And, you know, they had multiple angles, at least on TV, and I don't know what they were working with, but it was so obviously inside the foul pole. It didn't even hit the foul pole.

It was inside the foul pole. And the next pitch he struck out on, that would have given the Orioles a lead. They ended up losing five to three. The Orioles are in a wild card race. There are five games below 500, but they're only a game and a half out of the third spot. But, yeah, I don't know what baseball has to do.

You can't allow that to happen. Can you imagine if that had been a playoff game? All right. I had one other thing to talk to you about. So, Tommy, a judge in Louisiana granted a temporary restraining order yesterday allowing 30 players who are currently on NFL rosters to return to college football for a fifth year of eligibility. There are actually over a hundred athletes in total that sued the NCAA for a fifth year of eligibility.

And the judge has put in a temporary restraining order, meaning for the time being, you could get players who are on NFL rosters right now under contract that if they get released, and by the way, the release date is August 30th, the cut down 90 to 53, They could be on college rosters two days later. Wow. I mean, this is such a brave, not a brave new world, a bizarre new world of college sports. I mean, what do you think?

At this point, nothing, at this point, nothing bothers me anymore, honestly. Really? Yeah, because, and I was thinking about this when, when, before the show today, because I talked about this a little bit on radio, and then after thinking about it a little bit more and sort of the outrage that many have about it,

it's not going to impact my enjoyment of college football one bit. I've said this the last few years, the transfer portal, NIL, salary cap, conference reshuffling, all of it. I hate it in the moment, but none of it with respect to football, specifically has stopped me from enjoying college football seasons like I have in the past. Once the games begin, you get used to the new players in new places, you adjust, and then by

mid-season, it's like those players have been there forever, and you just enjoy the season that is playing out the one at hand. College basketball, for me, because I'm such a massive fan of one team in particular, Maryland. The conference reshuffling has definitely impacted me, but I'm not enjoying the season any less, the overall college basketball season, even though in November I've got to look up where these great players who played in one spot last year landed this year.

I mean, the fact that they're making all this money doesn't change the way the games are played or the way I see the game. the games being played. I mean, if these players have a fifth year of eligibility and they get cut by their NFL teams or they get put on a practice squad and they can get out of their contract with the teams and go back and play college football, it's not going to impact my, you know, viewing enjoyment level at all.

And, you know, now, there are some players here like Diego Pavia, the quarterback at Vanderbilt last year, who the Ravens' Cup. cut early in training camp. Apparently, he is potentially available to return. That would be a big name where he would go. I don't know. This is more inconvenient for the college programs. Like, where are we going to put them? Oh, my God, this guy just came available. I've already been working with this other guy and he's going to start. So it could be disruptive, but you're not going to add players unless you need them and they can add value. But it's just wild that, you know, players you're watching this weekend and next weekend in NFL preseason games could be playing in college football in two weeks.

That's very wild. Strange. Yes. College sports is definitely not the same anymore. That's 100% true. But I'm telling you, the games, once they're played and they're on TV, they don't seem any different. All right. You got anything else?
