I've spent the week, for the most part, catching up on a lot of what happened while I was away, but a lot of new things have happened, and I was just telling you before we started to record, literally something just popped up as a headline story on ESPN. It's titled, How DeBanza, Young, and Davis have the Wizards Thinking playoffs. And there is a quote at the end of this story from Trey Young, quote, This team can be super special. We can achieve whatever we want to, especially if we have everybody healthy.

We can do so many things, man. I just can't wait to play. Closed quote. There's a little bit of chestiness with this team after, you know, the AJ DeBonsa's summer league debut, which I don't know if you followed at all. I was following it from France. just, I mean, I've already done this, and I'm sure you feel the same way, but I just can't help myself, but just tell those people who are on social media talking about how the verdict is already in on A.J. DeBanza,

they got it right. How embarrassed you should be to tweet something like that. It really is. You agree, right? It's like I live in it in a different universe sometimes. I mean, look, we've been reduced in the media, particularly in the sports that aren't NFL. Although baseball coverage in this town, it's actually stepped up lately. Really? There's more outlets covering baseball.

But for the most part, basketball and hockey are pretty much reduced the fan website. They pretty much are. So that's what you get. You get A.J. DeBondson, who goes two for 13 from the field in his opener, and all people can talk about is his tremendous dunk. Wait a minute. He went two for 13. I thought that he was better than that. No? By the way, I couldn't give a crap what his numbers in the summer league against primarily players who are not going to play in the NBA. I don't really, this is the part that's just laughable. It's like when people, you know, the comp to the,

this is people going nuts over training camp videos. But it's actually even worse because in training camp videos, they're actually playing or practicing not in pads, not with a game plan or preseason games against teams that are playing their players for the entirety of the game. But you're talking about most of the players in these summer league games are not going to be on NBA rosters. And the starters are rookies and second year players who don't play that. much. I mean, it doesn't mean he's not going to be great. I like him, but I'm not going nuts over Caleb Wilson's performances or Darren Peterson's performances. Those are the two players that I felt had the most upside. They're playing, these games don't count. I mean, it's just,

it's, yeah, it's, it's really better to stay off social media. It really, I'm really getting to the point where it's either funny if you want to just look at some of this stuff and say, oh my God, children commenting on our teams in town or just steer clear of it altogether. But when you're in France, it's kind of the way to follow it. I'm sorry, go ahead. In his opening game, he was six for 18. Yeah, you said two for 13. Yeah.

Right. Six for 18. Right. I missed five out of seven three-pointers and committed eight turnovers. Did he commit eight turnovers? In any game, eight turnovers is a lot no matter who you're playing against. I didn't know that. Even for Trey Young, eight turnovers is a lot.

Eight turnovers, really? And what, the game that they played against Darren Peterson and... Yes. Yeah, it's a glorious game. No, no, no, no, no, no. I'm looking at Darren Peterson had eight turnovers and was six of 18. Oh, okay. You're...

Okay. Yeah. Oh, you're right. AJ DeBonson. What's his first line? AJ DeBonsa was 7 of 18, 0 for 5 from behind the arc, 7 of 8 from the free throw line, 7 rebounds, 2 steals, a block shot, just one turnover. I mean, okay, whatever.

And then he had another decent game in their second game, and then they sat him down. Yeah, I just, this story, I haven't read the whole thing, but there's a quote in here from AJ DeBonce's father, who apparently is a piece of work. Like he's got a lot of personality, and he handles his. We have two young, you know, potential star athletes in town that are managed by their parents, Jaden Daniels by his mother, and A.J. DeBonsa by his father.

And A.J. DeBons's father said, quote, after the Summer League performances, I don't want to sound cocky, but he was born ready. Close quote. Okay. Here's where the two for 13 comes from. Okay. AJ DePonza with,

went two for 13 when jump shots just outside the restricted area. Okay. Outside the restricted area? Like close to the bucket around that restricted area? Yeah, I think so. All right. You struggle with perimeter and mid-range efficiency. Okay.

Fortunately, you don't have to do to shoot that in the NBA. All you got to do is shoot three-pointers. Yeah. All they do is shoot. three's. I know I got the two for thirteen from somewhere. Okay. Yeah, I mean, good preparation for the show.

You looked it up as we had all of you. What? I mean, I didn't think I'd have to say a word for this show because unlike me, who had a very, very dull couple weeks in our hiatus. You have basically lived the life of kings. Well, I mean... You weren't even in this country. tree. Look, for somebody who summers in Europe like you have many years, we have taken a couple of

very nice trips, and this trip was a great trip. It was a really fun trip. And by the way, I was in Paris the night France beat Morocco and watched it from some of these outdoor, you know, cafes, bars, and it was quite the scene. You know, it was like kind of a cool thing. to be somewhere where it really matters. Like it really matters. Yes. Yeah. There's passion. There's real passion.

Oh, my God. And we have at sporting events in America that are in soccer. I told this story on Monday, and I did not identify the person, but he said it was okay to identify him. Steve Sands, our very good friend, who is right now over at the British Open, Royal Brookdale, in England. He was somewhere. The last show we did was on the Monday where the U.S. was going to play Belgium. By the way, I watched that game, Tommy, from the seat on the plane as we waited two hours on the plane to take off because of thunderstorms. And remember, I told you that day that after the president got involved with that guy,

Balligan, and everybody then thought the U.S. was going to win, I bet Belgium. I bet Belgium at plus 180 on the happiness hedge, you know, tip. You know, either result. But it was very funny because the plane, people were watching the game on the plane as we were sitting there. And I was watching the game, too. But Sands told the story that he was somewhere watching the game. and when Belgium scored the first goal, there was a big roar in the place in which he was watching the game because most of the people thought the U.S. had scored. And he had to look around and he said, no, no, the U.S. didn't score.

And then everybody kind of figured it out. And they're like, oh, yeah. It was not. That's a passionate soccer in the United States, buddy. Yeah. Well. Can't even figure out who scored. They really flamed out in that game, didn't they?

My God. Here's how they flamed out. They flamed out so bad that I felt empowered to post on social media shortly after the law. Oh, boy. Like I said, take the Super Bowl champs, send them the soccer camp for three weeks, and they'll do better. And boy, did that light it up. Oh, you do? Don't you do that every four years?

Yes. Yes, because every four years you can count on them flaming out. Right. And so I'm sure a lot of people actually took you seriously, right? Oh, yes. Yes. There was a lot of, are you a sports journalist? How can you call yourself a sports journalist?

A lot of that stuff. Yeah. Well, that's, oh, here it is. Here's the tweet. Like I said, take the Super Bowl champions, send them to soccer camp for three weeks. And you're playing in the World Cup title game. Oh, you got a lot of responses to this one. Whoa.

Some people actually said, is this a genuine belief? Did you even respond to these people? I didn't respond to anybody. Yeah, good. Yeah. Let them think that you're serious. That's much better. Yeah.

Because if I was serious, I would have said four weeks, not three weeks. So I told you this, but not on the podcast. And I didn't say anything on the podcast because it was. was a bit of a surprise for his birthday. But the reason my wife and I went to France was my wife and Scott's wife put together this trip because he was celebrating a birthday. And we were supposed to go to Paris with them a couple of years ago when his house burnt down. I'm talking about Scott Van Pelt, my very close friend of decades. And the four of us were going to go to Paris and then the house burnt down when he was at the Masters.

I've told that story before about how he called me up and said, apparently my house is on fire. Will you go over and see? Because no one was home. He was at the Masters and his wife and their kids were, I think, in Jacksonville. And I had to tell him that the house was not in the best of shape. I'll never forget that. He, like, he's on the plane coming back from the Masters and he says,

tell me, how is it? And I didn't know what to say. Wrong. Because, you know, you don't want to say it, like, until he gets back, you don't want to him to, but he's told the story. He said, I saw Kevin thinking about what he was going to say for, like, over a minute, maybe two minutes, because, you know, in the text, you can see. And he's like, I knew then it was a problem.

And I think I texted something back to the effect of, it's not great. but it could have been worse if you guys were home, you know, something like that. Thank God you weren't home. It was not, it was not good. I mean, you know, the house basically, I've told that story. I think many of you who know Scott or watch his shows or listen to him, know that his, you know, this was three years ago or whatever it was. But anyway, we were supposed to go with them to Paris that week after he got back from the Masters.

And of course, we canceled. and so the wives have been putting this together for a while. So we actually surprised them over there. And we had a great time. It was really a good trip overall. But we got to see France, Morocco in that scene. Scott actually, you know, after the U.S. lost, he made this analogy. He's like, the U.S. is like the team that when they have a really good season,

They're like a five-seat in the NCAA tournament. And that's like the best it's ever going to be. That's essentially what it is, because one of the things that was really clear in watching that game against Belgium, and it could have just been a bad night, but there are levels to this sport, and they're not at the higher levels of the sport, the U.S. That's what, this is what I've said. This is kind of like the joke behind the Super Bowl champ things. point being that even a country as not as big as Belgium, their best athletes are on the field.

Okay? Not the United States. You've got to go down the list before you get to the level of athletes that play soccer in this country. See, I think that I disagree with that now. That used to be my stock answer to soccer not being up to, you know, par as compared to the rest of the world. We're a country of 340 million people. We don't have all of our best athletes playing professional football, basketball, and other sports because they're starting enough teams and enough spots. Our athletes, I don't think, are the problem. I think we have very good athletes

playing soccer. I have read a little bit, and I've watched some of this stuff on this particular issue. I had the guy Stephen Goff, you know, who's covered soccer for the post for years and now is with Yahoo now. I had him on the radio show yesterday, I think. And a lot of it comes down to our system for developing players. Our system here, in part because we have college sports, is you pay to get better, you know, and that excludes some of our best athletes in some cases. The rest of the world identifies the most talented players when they're seven years old, and they cultivate them to be professional players. They don't go to college to play at 17 or 18.

They're already playing professionally against the world's best. That's not what happens here. Because, you know, our professional players are playing in the best leagues around. the world. That isn't the way it used to be. I know, but they're not the star players. No, even what you just said still proves my point. Even if they're picked out and cultivated, that still makes them the best of the best. Yeah, we're not picking out and cultivating in this country.

We don't do that with any sport, you know? And then because we're unique in that college sports is such a big deal in our country, it isn't anywhere else. Nowhere else is college sports, important like it is here. Their 17, 18, 19, and 20-year-olds are playing professionally, and they've been playing professionally.

And a lot of our 17, 18, 19, and 20-year-olds are playing in college. Making good money these days playing in college, but they're playing in college. They're not playing against the best. You know, soccer people can debate this, you know, better than we can. I mean, I'll do respect to our ability to have this conversation, but I don't know enough

about it. I just know that that was a beat down. And the U.S. was expected to do well in that game. They were favored, and it wasn't even close. You know. It was an embarrassment. It was embarrassing. Now they can go back to her, do whatever they.

do for the next four years. Yeah. And next time, they'll probably be 64 teams. Did you see that? They'll have a chance to be even more teams before they stink the place up. Yeah, the World Cup FIFA is considering, this was the first year of the expansion to 48. And to be more inclusive to countries that didn't get in, they'd like to expand it to 64. Yeah.

But they're such an inclusive organization. You know, it's interesting. You saw the numbers, right? The television numbers. They were insane in the U.S. game. So what do you think it means? Does it manifest itself into soccer becoming much different for us, which is what we've been promised so many times?

Okay, so why? Well, like I said, I mean, you know, for sports to grow like that, it has to have to be a passion to sport. and there's no passion for soccer in this country, save for a very small group of people. I think, like I said, I think soccer will grow in this country as the demographics change in this country.

So I think soccer will grow. But if it's not your passionate following, then it's just a night out, or it's just a day out. Let's go to the soccer game. Yeah, I mean, you say there's no passion, for soccer, I agree with that, but there clearly is passion for the World Cup. That was proven.

This go around. I don't think it's passion for the world. I think among people from other countries, there's passion for the World Cup. I think for Americans, you're just trying to jump on board. Okay. They're just trying to get on board. Yeah. This looks like fun.

I want to be part of this. Well. I can't tell you how many people again. How many relatives? of mine texted me about watching the World Cup game who have never texted me or talk to me about sports in their entire life. Right. No. Well, like you said, sports is for the non-sports fans. Soccer is for non-sports fans. Yes. Yeah. So I'll, I'll rephrase. There is interest in the World Cup, if not passion. There's interest. Clearly,

the television numbers show that, but I'm kind of with you. It's like when, and I'm going Sunday, we'll talk about that shortly, but I think when this is over, it's like, you know,

we'll talk to you in four years about this, because that's going to probably be it. You know, and if they expand to 64, getting back to that, the one area in which I think you could have seen growth

or more growth is the big matches that the U.S. men's team plays against the other North American and Central American countries in that concaf as they're trying to qualify for the World Cup. So if you're at 64, those games won't even become that important. I don't know. They'll be meaningless.

I'll tell you this. I watched the game yesterday, and I did this podcast yesterday before that Argentina-England game. That was an exciting sporting event. The day before a game between France and Spain was a snoozer from my standpoint. And I think I shared with everybody an email. This J. Vargas 7 wrote me. Just listen to your analysis of Spain beating France. You said it was a snoozer.

Your soccer analysis puts me to sleep. The game was a strategic masterpiece from Spain. Stick with American sports. A masterpiece. should be in a museum somewhere. I compared it to a 17-7 NFL game where one team just ran the ball and dominated time of possession

and didn't make any mistakes. And some of those games, you're like, hey, that team played a really good game, but they're usually boring games. Yesterday's game was not boring. What Argentina did and the reaction to that in the moment, that was absolutely. Absolutely thrilling sports drama.

Down 1-0. The English on the verge of going back to the World Cup for the first time. The final is since 66. And Messi, he didn't score, but, you know, assisted on the goals, just took the game over. And England, you know, went into a shell. They went in to prevent defense. Somebody tweeted out, it was like, you know, it was like England was up 3-0 midway through the third quarter and went prevent defense against Joe Montana. That was the analogy.

And I would say that 3-0-0 is not equivalent to 1-0 in soccer. One-0 in soccer is more like 14 to nothing. It's a big lead. It is usually not something that you lose in a soccer game. But man, did you watch it? I'm telling, I'm getting this sense from your involvement in this part of the conversation that you did not watch Argentina beat England last night? No, I did. I was at my cigar store up here in Frederick, and so I was like a captive audience. Okay. And what seemed to me, based on my analysis, that made it more interesting, was how many shots on goal the Argentinians had. Yeah, right. I mean, I tell you what, nobody should crucify that English.

goalie. No, he made some great saves. Yes. He made some incredible saves. Yeah, I mean, right before Messies' assist for the game winner or the go-ahead goal at 92 minutes, I mean, he had made an unbelievable save. I know. Yeah. So I was impressed with that, and I was happy with the outcome because I'm sick of the Brits in every way shape. Why? Okay. I just them. They're on TV. They're everywhere. And I'm just sick of them. All the actors in the shows we watch, they're all British. I know. You know, it's 250 years. Start acting like a loser, okay? For crying out loud. I'm just sick. So I was happy that Argentina won. Of course, they're going

to get beat by Spain on Sunday. There was some tweet, I can't remember it. I'm paraphrasing here, but somebody's just saying, look, you know, England versus France, in a third place game is apropos. Yes. But so I was rooting for the English because on Sunday in the Meadowlands, that would have been a fun fan base to hang out with for a World Cup final,

which they haven't been in since 1966. This is Argentina's seventh World Cup final. So now... I think they have a chance to win three in a row, right? No, two in a row. Two in a row. Okay. Now, everybody just noticed how Kevin just drops in.

Kevin, just a weakly move from coming back to France just drops in that he's going to the World Cup title game. Well, I've shared that with everybody. I know. But it's a matter of factly. Well, I mean, we've kind of talked about this. We talked about it when my brother two months ago, you know, called me up and said,

I've got a ticket for the World Cup final with your name on it. You're going. Like he didn't even ask me because he's asked me to, you know, a couple of times over the last 20 years to, he's like, you've got to come to a Champions League final or a Premier League, whatever the big final is over in the UK. Whatever the soccer thing is. He's into soccer.

You know, he's been into soccer and he's lived in Costa Rica for three decades. son is a soccer player and he's got, you know, Messi's jersey and he's, he's so pumped up and he did tell me, if I didn't tell you this already, he did tell me like a week ago or a week and a half ago, he's like, and he said,

prefaced it with, this isn't going to happen, but if it did, the U.S. going to the World Cup final, we will not be going, we will be selling those tickets. Yeah. And I said, I totally understand, of course. But yeah, I'm heading up,

I'm actually heading up tomorrow night, and I'll be two of my sons are in New York, one who lives there, and my son who lives now in Mexico City, happened to be planning on being in New York for the weekend. So my brother, my nephew, will have a great weekend, and then the three of us, my brother, my nephew, and I will go to the game on Sunday. And I actually really am excited to go to this game. The only thing that I have a feeling is going to be different about this game versus if I had gone to, you know, an earlier round game with Argentina fans in Kansas City or something, is that, and my brother indicated that this could be very much a Super Bowl corporate kind of environment. Because these tickets have long been accounted for, like the Super Bowl. So it may not be filled with Argentine and Spain fans. But we'll see.

I don't know. I'm looking forward to it. It should be fun. I mean, here's the great thing about soccer that I've really come to realize more so with this World Cup. Because I've watched more of this than ever before. These games are over quickly. I mean, you don't know when they're going to end because of the whole clock fiasco,

but they're over in about two hours. It's pretty easy. watching that game yesterday and the clock is going 91, 92, 93, 94. And we're all wondering when's the game going to be over. Well, it was plus 9

when they got to 90 for stoppage time and Argentina scored the go-ahead goal at 92 in change. And then, you know, they celebrate as if the game's over because usually it is, you know, if you take the lead that late. And, you know,

So then you're thinking, well, is that going to add time to the stoppage time? Like, does that, because if they're not going to add time for the celebration, they should celebrate for another seven minutes and the game will be over. But they, you know, finished with the celebration. And then beginning at that plus nine, the 99 minute mark, certainly at the 100 minute mark, everybody's, the announcers are like, we're looking at the referee. We don't know when he's going to blow the whistle. And I'm just thinking, this is this.

This is the part that I don't understand. Soccer people from the rest of the world have no issue with not knowing when the game is going to end. I just, I can't function that way, watching sports. I mean, watching the clock is part of the allure of watching sports. They're watching the clock, but they're watching for the referee who apparently is keeping some sort of semblance of the stoppage time and the celebration. celebration time and the rolling around on the field time and the injury, all that stuff. And you just, you don't know when it's going to end. Have we won the game yet?

No, England just got the ball. And it looks like the referee is going to let them have another chance to tie the game. It's really, that in the flopping is hard to deal with. But the rest of the world loves it. So, you know, bless their hearts. Bless their hearts. Yeah, all right. World Cup final. I'll be here on Monday to talk about the experience. And I'm looking forward to going. If it were my ticket.

So who do you like? If I, well, if it were my ticket, let me just say, that thing would have already been on StubHub. But who do you like in the game? I don't know. I have no idea. In fact, let me just see something. Because I don't even know. I didn't look to see who the favorite is. in the final. I am right now. He was caught up in the wash of the 2025 injury-plagued season. I have him in front of all of the honorable mentions except neighbors. So did you see this? I'm assuming you did not. Yes, no, I did. Oh, you did see it. Okay. Yeah, I saw that he was 20th, right? Yeah, the ESPN top 10 receiver list. I went through it on the show yesterday. Did not have Terry obviously in the top 10.

Didn't have him among the six honorable mention receivers. And then among others receiving votes, he was the fourth receiver listed, which equals the 20th spot among the receivers that were voted on by league execs, general managers, scouts, and coaches. And I said in looking at the list that I'd have them closer to 15 than 20, but I wouldn't have him at 15 or higher than 15. Honestly, Benjamin, I think you are being way too aggressive. Neighbors, 100%, there's no way given his talent. Now, his injury situation is interesting.

I don't think I'd take Terry over Mike Evans, even now that Evans is older. Definitely wouldn't take him in front of Drake London. We've had that conversation before. Tyree Kill, you almost have to cut out because he may not play in 2027. I would take him in front of Zay Flowers, Jameson Williams, Alec Pierce. So there's like three or four guys. I'd take him from 20 to 17 or 16, but that's the best that I could do. Take them over T. Higgins?

No, I don't think I would. I think T. Higgins is really good and really scary to defenses. You know, only receipt votes, too. Yeah, he was on another. Look, he's a number two receiver on his own team because of Jamar Chase. The quarterback's special that's out on Netflix right now, I have only seen bits and pieces. I just didn't have a time to sit down and watch all.

a lot of it. I did see a little bit of the episode before the Chicago Monday night game. I'm going to go back and start it from the beginning, but that game really was crushing to Washington last year. They had a chance. That was a game that was in hand. They had a chance to be four and two. And then the next week was the Dallas game in which he got hurt in the hamstring injury. I can't wait to watch a little bit on the Seattle game. they didn't take him out of the game at the end, and they left him in there running an RPO, and he dislocated his elbow. But look, the one thing I will agree with is that Terry and Jaden and everybody else,

when you're on a team that has a bad season, you're out of sight, out of mind, and you're not going to be more often than not, unless you are truly elite, you're not going to be mentioned in the spot that you may have been mentioned in a year ago. go. So we know what happened last year and this time next year, hopefully things will be different. You know, I don't really care about this thing. It's just the time of year where there's content to be, you know, there's needed content. And this always provides an interesting view from those within the league. So I was actually, real quickly, I was interested in this last position group that they did today, which was the safeties. And to see if a guy like Nick Cross, who they acquired,

was anywhere to be found, because he had a good season last year in Indianapolis. But no, he was not listed anywhere. So these, you know, evaluations and rankings by all of these league people basically had Laramie Tunsell at number five, Jaden Daniels at number 12, and then Frankie Louvo and Terry McLorne among others receiving votes. Those are the only four players on the roster that were a part of this voting, although ironically Bobby Wagner was still among the linebackers others receiving votes. But that's it. So, you know, it doesn't mean much. They're going to get a chance to prove it on the field. And look, these are the top 20 to 25, 26 players at each position. You're still a pretty good player if you're a Daffa Oway and you're the 30th best

pass rusher in the league or 27th best pass rusher in the league. We'll see what happens. I can't wait for the season to begin. By the way, eight weeks from last night would have been the opening to the NFL season, Seattle and New England in a rematch. All right. What did you want to say about Rigo? I talked about his jersey being retired the other day. I know you wanted to say something about it. Well, I mean, I was really glad to see that, you know, and, you know, that always leads to who would be, I know we should celebrate it, obviously, but that always leads to who's next. Charlie Taylor? Yes. That's to me the given. I knew that Riggins was going to be next, and I feel strongly that next year will be Charlie Taylor's 42. And then for me,

that point, you could be done. You could certainly entertain, you know, Joe T and Jake and Dexter and Gary Clark and Brian Mitchell and Doug Williams, but those aren't, you know, what I would call no debaters. They, with Charlie Taylor next year, you have covered all the seven guys that I have said for, you know, many years, especially after they decided to start doing this, are the no debaters. Sunny, Darrell Green, Sammy Baugh, Charlie Taylor, John Riggins, Bobby Mitchell, an art monk. Those seven are absolute half-to-retires. Everybody else is debatable after that. Yeah, I would tend to agree with that, but if we are debating them, here's who I would include

in the debate. I would include Rush Grimm. I would include Doug Williams. Joe Theiseman Yep and Larry Brown Yeah so I've done this with you before and I've done it with everybody that's listening But my

Ken Houston's 27 Larry Brown's 43, Chris Hamburgers 55, Jacoby's 66, and Russ Grimm's 68. And then I think a little bit further off the radar because Doug Williams had one great playoff run. And he was a decent quarterback the other time. But he's, you got to, I think you got to be with a franchise much longer than that, even though his mark was indelible. And you could almost view him in some, not in the same context as Bobby Mitchell, because Bobby Mitchell was an all-time great player and Hall of Famer. Doug Williams is not a Hall of Famer. But because, you know, being the first

black starting quarterback to win a Super Bowl, that was a big deal. You could view him in the same way that you view Sean Taylor as kind of, there's a little bit more to just the fact that he didn't, you know, have this long Hall of Fame career, obviously in Sean Taylor. Taylor's case. It was because of tragedy. But on the, after that list, I would include Doug, Brian Mitchell, Pat Fisher, Monty Coleman, Dave Butts,

Dexter Manly, Gary Clark, and Jerry Smith, as, you know, even outside the debatable list. So that's, that's the list that I've always worked with. Sam Huff would be on that last list too, but he's really more of a New York giant than he is a redskin.

Yeah. I think. But they've gotten, with Charlie Taylor next to, year, and I would be shocked if it's not Charlie Taylor next year. It should be Charlie Taylor. He's the greatest receiver in franchise history. You agree with that, right? Yes. Yeah. So the second greatest receiver in franchise history already had his jersey retired. Charlie Taylor needs to have his jersey retired. And then, you know, they can stop if they want

or they can continue. Yeah. I would agree with that. Yeah. Yeah. And I'm just looking at my list. Like if they said, no, we've been. got one more after that. And from the debatable list, Joe Thaisman, Ken Houston, Larry Brown, Chris Hamburger, Jacoby Grimm. I think that I would probably

go Joe Thysman. I would go Rush Grim. You got to have a hog in there. Okay. All right. And why not have the Hall of Fame Hog? No, I mean, and Russ Grim, his

career is a evaluated at a slightly higher level than Jake's. There's not a big difference, but, you know, Grimm is, you know, consistently on one of those top 15, top 20 lists of the greatest guards of all time. Look, I've said this many times, and we've had this conversation about Kenny Houston. Kenny Houston is the one player in franchise history that will appear at his position on any top five, greatest of all time list. No other player in franchise history will appear consistently on a top five for their position. Not Sammy Ball, not Sonny Jurgensen, not John Riggins, not even Daryl Green. Darrell Green, you can find in some top 10 lists, but not top five. Ken Houston, I've seen consistently

somewhere between the second and the fifth greatest safety in the history of the game. Now, he played half his career in Houston as an oiler before he got here. But he was a great player here and had one of the most iconic plays in franchise history the tackle on Walt Garrison at the goal line to preserve a 14 to 7 Monday night win over the Cowboys in 73. Yep. That'll be a great day at the stadium now. It will.

It'll be a great day at the stadium. And here's what I said about Rigo the other day. And I know we've had this conversation before, but we'll do it again. I think John Riggins is the most beloved, the most popular player in franchise history. You say what? I think it's between him and Sonny. Yes. I would go with Sonny.

I think it's between him, Sunny. I think, I know you'd go with Sunny, and there was a time when I would go with Sunny, too. but Rigo's legend has lived on in a way that I don't know that Sunnis did. Rigo's still to people, that's their guy from the glory years, from the championship years. You still see probably as many 44s, if not more 44s in the stadium today than any other number. I think Daryl Green and Sunny are kind of, and maybe Art are kind of in that next group. But Sunny's not, you know, no answer is the wrong answer. It's an opinion.

But I think Rigo, there's a love for Rigo and a passion for Rigo that I don't know has ever existed with any other player. I mean, think about it, Tommy. Sunny was part of a Sunny Billy, you know, debilies. debate for all those years. Like there was another quarterback that played at the same time that fans preferred. I'm not saying the majority of fans, but the fans were

split, Sunny and Billy. Yeah. There was no debating Rigo. But you know what? There's the thing about Sonny that may actually even elevate him. He was so popular on a team

that didn't win. That's true. And Sunny around the league was popular like Rigo was. For him to eclipse the lackluster record of his team and reached the level he did, I think, is to speak to his popularity. Sure.

He was, I only saw the last part of Sonny's career, the George Allen part, you know, when he, was back and forth with Billy Kilmer. And by the way, Taurus Achilles at Yankee Stadium in 72. I, and I, and Sonny was my, my father and my uncle, who I went to games with as a kid, they were Sonny Jurgensen people.

Like, it wasn't close. They loved Sonny. And they loved him for, you know, the same reason a lot of people that lived through those terrible 60 teams, 60s teams loved him. because he was the best thing in sports in this town. And he was legitimately one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL and bad teams, but they scored a lot of points. And Sonny was a star around the league, not just in D.C.

You know, every other town knew of Sonny Jurgensen and knew how great he was. And Rigo was the same thing. Rigo was popular league-wide. You know, you could find people in other cities that loved Riggins. because of his personality. Same with Sunny. But, all right. Anything else on that?

Yeah, I'm good with that. All right, we've got a few other things. I'm looking forward to that day at the stadium. Let's hope that we get to that day, and these are, you know, meaningful games still happening. Because the Rams, they might be the best team that the NFL seen on paper going into a season in a long time, especially if Aaron Donald rejoins that team.

I'm glad they remember with Sunny, they put it in the last game of the year against the Cowboys. That was not very smart. No, it was. But, yeah, I'm looking forward to that too. And Rigo's just, you know, an all-time, not only great and beloved and all that, but for those of us, including you and me, we had a chance to work with him for many years. What did you think of the All-Star game the other night? Well, you know, it's funny because I went, I drove up to Harry Fisher's house, my buddy, Harry, usually puts on Bumstock, and my friend Pete, who's been my friend, you know, he's been a friend for 60 years. Right. We all decided to have dinner the night before and watch the All-Star game together. You know? And so, because we thought it would be kind of cool.

Well, the dinner was great. But the All-Star game after the first inning was a snoo. It really was. You know, all three runs scored in the first inning, and that was that. It was it. A lot of strikeouts. Yeah. A lot of opt-outs.

Shoah O'Tonnie, Aaron Judge. Yeah, there were. A lot of pitching opt-outs, too. Well, the Nationals, Forrest Griffin wound up making team. I know. Because of those and he pitched great. He pitched great. He decided to sign in order, I think.

Yeah. Three up, three down, two strikeouts and then a deep fly ball that was caught. I caught his inning. CJ Abrams struck out twice and James Wood struck out twice. What did you make of this report from Bob Nightingale the other day

in USA Today that Washington was shopping C.J. Abrams and James Wood last winter. Well, Tabani really was pretty adamant. He's come out since then to say that the James Wood part of that was fall.

Right. Okay. And I'm going to think that it probably was. I mean, there's no rush to trade James Wood. He's not going to be a free agent until 2030. Okay. So, you know, if you're looking for that wand, Soto's sweet spot, that time where you can trade a superstar who still is under control

enough to bring you back a big package of players, he's a ways away from that. You can keep James Wood for another two years before you have to trade him. Yeah, that would be insane to have thought about unloading James Wood. He is a legitimate star and you control him like you said for a few years. Until the end of 2030. Yeah, I mean it doesn't make any sense.

So like at the end of 28 that would be the Juan Soto similarity. He still has two years of control left and that's still an attractive trade option for a lot of teams. So there should be no rush the trade James Wood, but you're going to have to trade him because Scott Bores is his agent.

And he, that guy, he's going to become a free agent. Okay, there's no way that he's signed in a deal. Now, C.J. Abrams is represented by Rock Nation. He's not a poor client. It's conceivable. He could be signed to a deal, but the learners aren't going to do that. And I don't think Tobani wants to do that necessarily. I don't think he'll get traded at the trade deadline because I think you can still get value for him in the off-season. He'll still have two more years of control at the end of his season. So he could be traded in the winter, but what complicates everything is the upcoming possible work stoppage.

You know, I mean, the labor agreement ends December 1st. everyone's expecting a lockout, and free agency is going to be in limbo. And trades are going to be very difficult to make, because no one wants to make a deal until they figure out what the new salary structure might be if it changes. So I don't think Abrams is going anywhere this season either, unless the bottom falls out. Look, the nationals got swept in three straight by the Yankees, blowing leads in all three games.

But they have been a resilient team throughout the year. They've had a couple of soul-crushing losses. Philly three times and the Yankees three times for sure. But bounce back to get back to winning because they have such a powerful offense. And a lot of teams can't stop them. So I expect them to do that again this time around. They start to see the post-all-star season tomorrow.

in Sacramento against the A's. So unless the bottom falls out and then they decide to put Abrams on the trading block when the August 3rd trading deadline comes, I think he'll be here. I think he'll be here to finish the season. I had Dave Jagler, you know, who calls the games with Charlie Slows on radio

on the radio show today. He's actually a really good guest. And he, you know, he said, he made the point. He said, look, this, first part of their schedule starting tomorrow night against the A's, which then goes into games against, no, it's another road set. Hold on. It's Colorado. They've got the A's in Colorado coming out of this All-Star break, and he thinks that these six games could be very telling because

these are, you know, these are teams that right now, you know, in the standings, I mean, Oakland is struggling. They've lost nine games in a row. Colorado right now might be the worst team in baseball, I think record-wise. And he said they've got to make some hay here with this schedule and, you know, kind of win five out of six, get back well above 500 and then, you know, force the thinking to be, hey, we're two, three games out of the wild card race. We should be looking for bullpen help at the deadline. But he said if they come out and they lose three, four, five out of six, and now they're, you know, really underwater, four or five games under 500, yeah, that could be it. He thinks they need to. Yeah. But he pointed out, the schedule really gives them an opportunity here

this weekend and then early next week. And then they come back and they play Arizona, Toronto, Atlanta, Philly. So it gets, you know, it gets tougher after that. But this would be an opportunity. I would love to see August and September be two months in which you've got bullpen help and you're not tragic in that particular area and you've got a legit shot to contend for a wild card spot.

I saw something while I was away. I think I mentioned this the other day that if the Nats statistically had a bullpen that was average, they would be eight to nine games above 500 right now.

I know. Yeah. And yeah. Yeah. I mean, never has a reason for one game under 500 been so obvious with one team. Yeah. Because they're the best offensive team in baseball. It's not hard to find what's wrong with this team. Yeah. All right. I've got a couple of other things, including they announced the team did the new uniform schedule for the upcoming season.

Obviously, the helmet's different. you know, the helmet has the W on it.

The alt uniforms, the uniforms that they refer to as the Hale Razor uniforms are the blacks with the helmet that is black with the W, but has the spear going through the W. Well, they announced, and I actually have been interested to know what they would do at home. Would they be a dark color jersey team at home or a light color jersey team at home? the championship teams under Joe Gibbs, they wore white at home. And this team is going to wear primarily burgundy tops at home, including in the home opener against Seattle and every other true home game, with the exception of one, the giant game in week five at home. They're going to wear white at home.

Now, the opener against Philadelphia, they will be in white. Philadelphia will be in green. Week two against Dallas, they'll be in their new burgundy jerseys because Dallas wears white at home. And they did make it a point in their press release to not announce the pants color. But the indication is white, burgundy, and gold are all possibilities for the bottom. So we could see burgundy on gold, burgundy on white. the championship uniforms are white tops, burgundy pants, burgundy tops, white pants.

But they're going to mix it up with white, burgundy, and gold. And then the black jerseys, the alternates, will be worn at home against Cincinnati in November on Monday night football and in December at home against Atlanta. I know you couldn't wait for this information to come out.

But I was actually curious because when they announced and unveiled these uniforms that we've been talking about on this show for a while now, that they were going to go back to something that resembled the championship uniforms, I was wondering, were they going to wear white primarily at home, which was the championship year, you know, jersey at home, or were they going to wear burgundy at home? Well, it looks like, at least in 2026, they're going to wear primarily burgundy at home. So there you go, Tommy. Uniform news.

Six years ago, go ahead. Did you have a question about uniforms? I thought you just wanted to move on. I was going to say, look, I recognize how important it is to a segment of the fan base. You know, something I'll never get, but I don't have to get it. Right. You know, well, you didn't live it. You're not emotionally tied to it like I am and many of the listeners are.

Six years ago, this week, the team announced, that it was going to give up its name after 87 years. Man, six years ago, it's been six years since that crazy, crazy spring and summer of 2020. But, you know, I think most of you remember it was Fred Smith and Federal Express that really drove this because there were financial ramifications. and Fred Smith, the founder and chairman of Federal Express and the FedEx name, which was attached to the stadium. FedEx is a big, big, long-term sponsor of this football team. Fred Smith, a minority owner who had at that point had it up to his eyeballs with Dan Snyder and the dishonesty in terms of revealing information that the minority shareholders had requested,

dividend payments that weren't made. Snyder brought this on himself. We've been down that road. We've covered this ground before. But it really was FedEx early in that month of July 2020 announcing that they would be the first sponsor to drop the Redskins if they did not change their name. And they were a multi-hundred million dollar corporate sponsor. for this football team. And from that point, others

threatened the same level of pressure. The environment in the summer of 2020 was ripe for this. And on July 13th, six years ago, this week, Washington announced that it would be dropping the Redskins

name and the Indian head logo. And yeah, and the rest is history. The horse left the barn that day and it was impossible to get him back in to the barn. Even though I still think that Washington football team would be better than what they currently have. Six years ago. Wow. Yes, that happened. All right. What else you got for me? Anything?
