If you need new windows.
Hey, Tommy, you know, this week,
the temperature is going to start to drop a little bit.
It's going to get cool at night.
Upper 30s in the suburbs coming up this week.
Did you know about that?
Well, yes, I did.
In fact, I'm heading north this weekend to the Poconos.
You are?
Yeah, so it'll be even colder up there.
Yeah.
Thursday night.
Now, for me, it'll be in the low 40s, but for you in Frederick, upper 30s.
I love this time of year.
I mean, I love fall.
I used to love cold weather.
You know how much I love snowstorms, but I don't love the cold weather anymore.
do like the fall weather. There's something perfect about, we live in such a great autumn,
autumnal area. The DMV is a great, you know, late September, October, November area,
don't you think? Yes, I love the, I love the fall. And we've had some great weather.
Great weather.
September. We had a terrible weather in the summer between rain and the beginning of it. The heat.
And then unbearably hot temperatures after that. But we're getting a great fall. Well, July was super hot. And then August was actually great.
The heat subsided. But, you know, this time of year, now that the kids are, you know, not kids, they're grownups. But we would always do.
something out in your neck of the woods. Every, you know, early to mid-October, we would do the trip to
Butler's Orchard, you know, which is, is Butler's Orchard in German, is it in Germantown or is it in
Frederick? Seneca, Maryland. I don't think it's in Frederick. You don't think it's in Frederick? You
think it's in Montgomery County? I'm going to look that up. I think, for whatever reason, I think I thought
it was in Frederick, but now I think it's like maybe Germantown. Like, like,
the last sort of northern Montgomery County area.
It is Germantown.
Okay, it's Germantown.
Big orchard, hayrides, pumpkin patches.
God, that was always a lot of fun with the kids.
I don't think you can really go when you're adults without kids.
I guess you can because they have a big market too that you can go to.
Well, you can do it when you're old.
You see, when you're old like me, because people look at you like a kid.
So you reverted back to childlike tendencies.
I might want to just go out there and get a pumpkin and get some apple cider.
By the way, my wife is not an orange pumpkin person.
She likes all of the other colors, the greens and the whites and the yellows.
I'm like, you got to have at least one orange pumpkin, don't you?
She's like, no, we don't need one orange pumpkin.
so and you know what we don't get around here what but we used to get in the polka noz all the time
the smell of woodburning oh yeah that's a good smell great smell really what i miss up in the polkaos
yeah you know the smell of wood burning a lot more people had wood burning stoves up there
and you have people with fire fireplaces here but it's just not as prevalent
wood burning stoves are the best you know in my house we have basically gas fireplaces i have one
woodburning fireplace we don't use it though because it's in a room that we're never in
and i miss a good wood burning fireplace uh that's that smell and that heat is just much
different than a gas fireplace but it's also once you've had gas uh as your fireplaces uh as your
fireplace, it's tough to go back because you can turn it on and turn it off and you don't have to
clean anything.
And you don't have to make the fires.
All right.
Let's get the show rolling with a few emails.
Yeah, this one.
This one from Darren.
Darren writes, Kevin, this is the Darren that reached out to you during the name change days.
I'm a branding consultant for several Fortune 500 companies and a big NFL fan.
but not a Washington fan.
I mentioned to you back in 2021
that this was going to be
one of the more difficult brand challenges
I'd ever seen
due to the limited number of options
that could actually work.
I always felt that it needed to be tied
to a Native American theme,
and he wrote in parentheses,
e.g. example, warriors,
or the team would likely lose
a majority of its longtime fans.
The entire endeavor by those in charge
was disastrous.
And anybody that thinks low TV ratings
or anything other
than about the name,
they're kidding themselves.
These are high-risk projects
for companies in their infancy,
let alone established ones.
Add to that,
it was a change made
when fans were already
abandoning a sinking ship
because of many other reasons.
But those reasons changed
when Snyder sold the team.
What's left is
the name. That from Darren.
But that's not true.
Yeah, there are other possibilities.
Yes.
But that's the number one possibility.
We talked about the damage that was done.
I think it is. Yeah.
But we talked about the damage done over the years and people made decisions, you know,
to move on from the team to either another team or something else.
I think that's a significant portion, but you're right.
I think the name would probably be the number one.
thing that you could point to.
Yeah. For those that missed the conversation last week, John Orand, who comes on radio with me all the
time, he's been on the podcast many times. He is a sports business, sports media expert.
He also lives in D.C. And he talked about the ratings through the first three games of the year.
He did not have the Atlanta game and certainly didn't have the Chargers games. But the local TV ratings
among all 32 of the NFL markets here for the first three games were very low.
It was a 13 average, which put it in the back half of the league,
which, you know, when you consider the season the team had last year and the anticipation
for this one, those are disappointing numbers.
And I've pointed out to the fact that, you know, the stadium and the season tickets are not
sold out. Now they sold out the first two home games, and I bet you they'll sell out the Monday
night game against the Bears, but these aren't season ticket sellouts. They haven't sold out
all their season tickets, and they've got a stadium that's, you know, kind of on the low end of
capacity. But anyway, we talked about that last week a little bit, and the reasons for it, and Tommy
said, you know, it's the damage that was done to the fan base, and it's the name. And those are the two
biggies for sure. Those are the two obvious answers because everything else would point to,
wow, what a product. You know, final four last year of NFL teams. The most exciting new
young player at quarterback in the league. You know, pent up years of losing should be
demand when the team is good again. The
belief that the team is on the verge of a sustained year over a year kind of a run. So,
yeah, I don't think there's any doubt about it. But, you know, the issue, and I said this last
week with you, the issue is, do they believe that over time, not in a year, probably not in two years,
but over time, a new customer will develop and those people will replace people?
people like me and those that haven't come back in full measure and don't feel it anywhere near
like they used to. And those people being younger more likely than not will have much greater
lifetime revenue opportunities for them. I still believe this. I don't know this for sure.
So this is not me saying that this is definitely for sure. I'll tell you what I know.
knew definitely for sure in a moment. I've said it many times previously. I still think that the team
would have seriously considered and contemplated a name change had the season last year not gone well.
If it had been a seven and ten season with no reason for genuine excitement about the future,
you know, Jaden wasn't as good as advertised. The team wasn't very good. I think that there would have been,
I think something would have happened
and they would have started that ball rolling
in the off season.
When you say name change,
do you mean reverting back to the old name?
No.
No, I think that they would have explored something new
and that ball would have been rolling.
I don't know that for sure.
What I did know, and I shared with you guys,
going all the way back to like last September, last October,
is I knew they were going to go back
to the old uniforms.
And they were going to test it out this year with a couple of alt uniform dates going back to the,
you know, the uniforms of old.
And that eventually the plan, and I think it'll start next year, hopefully the uniforms that I think will first see on Sunday night football against Seattle in November, I believe.
I think we'll see those as the primary uniform.
That was, you know, the brand stuff.
And I don't think we'll end up with the logos on the helmet.
I've said that before.
I hope we do.
I hope the logo is brought back.
Yeah.
But anyway, this is a different topic.
This from Keenan.
Well, wait a minute.
Wait a minute.
Can I interject something?
I don't want to drive the car off the road.
It's all right.
But this looks like an opportunity about, about,
media issues and television ratings in particular. Do you follow Eric Fingerhut on social media?
Yeah, I know. Yes, I know who Eric is. Eric's been a guy that has always reached out about TV ratings
information, right? Yes. He described himself as a recovering journalist and an amateur media critic.
Right. And I always follow him. He follows me. He seems pretty plugged into the...
Yeah, I think he's been reaching out to us for years.
Why is it my...
Okay, go ahead.
What did he post?
He posted something from Austin Karp of Sports Business Journal.
It's an excerpt from a media story that says about regional sports networks TV share.
He talks about the nationals, and this is Austin Karp.
The nationals are in the market for their next local TV deal.
And this season on Masson, the team had a 34% RSN share in D.C.
That's below the 51% for the Capitals.
So the Capitals have a 51% regional sports network share in D.C.
But the Masson number is above the 16% for the Wizards.
Yeah.
16%.
16%.
Wow.
Now here's a comparable.
The article talks about
the Tampa Rays.
You know, the Tampa Bay
Rays. Yeah.
The raise had a 51%
RSN market share
in their area,
which is 2% higher
than the 49%
the Lightning, who have won a couple of Stanley Cups
in their history have.
So this is a weak TV market for local sports teams.
No doubt.
Well, it wasn't for the Redskins for many years.
The Redskins were always way, way up there among NFL markets.
Yeah.
Yeah, no, it's Tommy, we talked about this going back 15 years ago when Maryland basketball was in the ACC, when Maryland was in the ACC.
And Maryland basketball was a big effing deal.
Like, you know, you and I know this, and a lot of listeners know this,
but I think a lot of, you know, newer D.C. area people would never guess this.
But there was a time probably up until the late 2000s, early 2010s,
where Maryland basketball got big numbers when they played big games locally
against Duke, against North Carolina basketball.
but basically that was it other than Redskins games.
That was it.
Because, look, I was wrong about the Wizards when they had a couple of years there.
They had a game six against Indiana one year and didn't sell the game out in the second round of the postseason.
Yes.
And they didn't sell the game out.
So, yeah, it's a great place to live.
not a great sports town.
It never has been.
Never has been.
Okay, I just thought it'd be a good place to talk about that.
Yeah, for sure.
Let me just say this about one last thing on the football team's TV ratings.
I can't believe that this year, if we get to, you know, a massive playoff game late, you know, in late January,
that it's not going to blow the roof off.
And it's not going to be like it used to be.
And it's not going to be there with Kansas City and Buffalo and New Orleans and, you know, some of the, you know, Philadelphia,
some of the, you know, big TV rating, Dallas TV rating markets that do huge games.
I just think we still just love the NFL and we love football.
I want the name to change.
I want everything to change.
losing steam on all of this, to be honest with you. I'm going to be thrilled to see those uniforms back,
and I'm curious as to how I'm going to react watching that. What would be great is on those nights
if they just referred to the team as Washington instead of the commanders. Anyway, let me move on
to this next email because it's somewhat related. This from Keenan, Keenan writes, Kevin, been listening to
your show for a few years now. I'm from Chicago, but I grew up in the D.C. area. One thing I like hearing
you talk about with guests is NFL scheduling TV numbers, et cetera. How about Washington's
next seven games, all being on national television? When is the last time that has happened for
this franchise, if ever? I'm seeing two each of Sunday night football and Monday night football,
the Madrid game against the Dolphins, and they both go, they, they go, they, they, they, they,
They go against the Cowboys and Lions in games that will surely be the national game in the late afternoon window.
Either way, just think it's really cool to see and speaks to how differently this team is thought of nationally in just a couple of years.
Yeah, I actually went back after reading your email Keenan to look at 2013.
In 2013, after the RG3 rookie year, wasn't anywhere near what this is.
You can actually start with the game that was just played.
It was the Fox game of the week with Burkhart and Brady.
Now it's Chicago on Monday night.
Dallas, which, by the way, shaping up to be potentially a pretty big game
if the Cowboys win this weekend and Washington wins on Monday night.
That's going to be the 425 Burkhart Brady game on Fox.
Then it's Kansas City on Monday night football.
Seattle on Sunday night football.
And then Detroit on Fox 425 on November 9th, very likely a Burkhart Brady game.
Miami and Madrid, Denver on Sunday night football Thanksgiving weekend.
Yeah, that is 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 straight in basically the, not standalone,
but in the, you know, mostly national television spot.
Look, John Oran said to me last week, he thinks the numbers are low because of the starting schedule
against the Giants, Packers, and Raiders.
I personally would doubt that that's it,
but if we're going to see a big bump in numbers,
standalone games are easier to watch at night
than they are on Sunday afternoons at 1 o'clock, I think.
Because even if you're not a fan,
even if you're not a fan of the team,
but you live in the market,
and you're going to watch Monday night football.
going to watch Sunday night football.
Yes.
So, yeah.
God, this next stretch, man, bears,
cowboys on the road, chiefs on the road,
Seattle at home, Detroit at home,
Miami and Madrid, Denver at home.
That game's shaping up to be.
You know, the two, you know, when you look at the schedule
at the beginning of the year and you see Seattle and Denver,
Sunday night football at home, those should be wins.
Oh, yeah, those are two really good teams.
Yeah.
Who knows?
By the time we get to the Philadelphia games,
maybe the Eagles will stink and be out of it.
I doubt that will happen, but who knows?
So what did you think of the game Sunday?
Well, I have to admit, I was surprised, surprised by the outcome.
You were a believer?
I wasn't.
I had them losing 3421.
I thought the Chargers would be more fired up than they would.
were, I thought, I had a little trip.
You know, it's funny, absence so easily makes the heart grow fonder.
Well, absence, I think, made some of us grow a little bit more suspicious about
Jayden Daniels and the offense, just a tiny bit, particularly playing with the knee brace
this time around, you know, not playing for a couple weeks, that he'd be a little rusty,
maybe be a little hampered by the knee brace,
and those things didn't happen.
Although he didn't get off to a great start,
but by the end of the game, he was Jane Daniels
in every way, shape, or form.
Right.
The brace or not.
So it was a very impressive win to go out on the West Coast,
to beat a Chargers team that was 3-1 going into the game,
a well-coached, supposedly a well-coached team.
uh...
it was it was it was a big win
that should make everybody believe that this team will be there to compete
throughout the whole season
yeah
i think
i mean
that daniels was
was just
was so composed
so smart
in some of his
play delivery his passing
you know i heard the guy from
uh...
uh... who you like from pf on your show this morning
Nick Ackridge.
Talking about, yeah, talking about how he had the worst ball placement of all the
quarterbacks rated.
Yeah.
You know, a plan.
But, I mean, isn't that the nature of his game?
I mean, he's usually running when he's in motion.
You know, he's usually running when he's, I mean, he does not get the chance to drop back
that much.
It seems like that's part of his, of course.
You know, the ball's not going to be exactly where, you know, the best place to catch it.
But usually if under the duress that he is, if the ball's in the neighborhood,
that seems like what you would want.
So I'm not sure that that stats reflects anything about him.
I think his accuracy has been a little bit off going back to the opener against the Giants
against the Packers.
and now we have this game.
You know, it was one thing that I dinged him for.
There were three or four throws that just weren't, you know, perfect.
But, yeah, I was surprised that Nick gave me that number.
He said that last week, Jaden was in terms of accurate throws of the starters at the bottom.
But he also revealed that he had a very high grade for the game per PFF.
So go make of that what you want.
The highest grade of anybody on the team.
of anybody in the game on Sunday.
And he was spectacular, I thought, after those first two drives.
But I can see it.
Like I thought last year, man, the accuracy after the Tampa Bay opener game,
it's just like every week, it's like, God, can the guy put the ball on the money,
you know, more consistently than he does?
But, yeah, I don't know.
I mean, it's not like, I guess his.
completion percentage certainly is lower, but what's interesting about some of his inaccurate
throws is a lot of them are being caught, especially by Debo Samuel. Now, now, Ertz could have
pulled one in that was high. He didn't pull it in. But yeah, I mean, look, the opener is always
a little shaky. That Thursday night game, I think we just got to throw out completely as it
relates to the offense. It was just a bad night, you know, little preparation and a team that
just dominated the line of scrimmage. And it was impossible to play any position,
skill position for Washington that night. I mean, I'm not throwing out those two games in terms
of counting them on his record or from a stat standpoint. But I said this after the game on
Sunday night. I feel like Jaden Daniels' 20-25 season began when he completed that third
and 16 to Jalen Lane on the third drive of the game. After that, he was Jaden Daniels again.
What's also interesting about the game moving forward is that, and I think this came up in your
conversation too, that this defense and the defensive line in particular,
You know, they played well, but I think you'll have a defensive performance,
and this shouldn't be any surprise to anybody.
I mean, but I think the defense from week to week will be based on how good the offensive line is they play.
No doubt.
Nick said that, and I've kind of alluded to the same thing.
If you, this team has had five games, and defensively they've had three pretty decent games.
against the Giants, Raiders, and Chargers.
And those three teams had one thing in common.
Their offensive lines weren't very good, and they were injured.
And this team took advantage of that.
Good for them to take advantage of it,
because if they weren't able to take advantage of it,
then you'd really have a problem.
But as I said to Nick, and if you were listening, Tommy,
this team has improved as a run-stopping team.
And so I'm encouraged by that.
because last year was painful at times.
It was like, are we going to get the ball back once the other team got it?
And, you know, now they can't cover, so they've got to have pass rush.
And we'll see.
You know, Chicago, yeah, Chicago is going to be an interesting matchup up front.
I actually think Washington's going to really be able to run the football against Chicago.
but I think defensively they're going to have a much bigger challenge against that offensive line
than they did against the Chargers.
And who will be running that ball for Washington?
I think it will be Kroski Merritt.
I think so.
Yeah, I am.
The star in this league.
Just like that.
Just like that.
Yes.
A star is born.
Let's talk some Bill.
We'll do that right after these words from a few of our sponsors.

comps for Bill NFL
comps.
And man, I got a lot
of them. We could have taken
calls for an hour and a half today.
But I mean, some of the names,
you know, Adrian Peterson,
Lidani and Tomlinson,
I had somebody just send me a picture
on social media of Gail Sayers,
Emmett Smith.
And I'm like, hey guys,
like, now, the question, to be fair,
is more like your comp,
like stylistically.
Who does he remind you?
Who does he run like?
It doesn't mean that he's that player.
I get that.
I don't think all of you that have sent in
one Hall of Fame or after another is sending in,
this is who he's going to become.
But, yeah,
I think I settled on like a combination of like Terry Allen
from Skins days.
Mike Thomas, you don't remember Mike Thomas,
but Mike Thomas.
I remember Mike Thomas.
You do remember for the Redskins?
I mean, you weren't covering the team.
No, but I was an NFL fan.
Yeah.
So, but a lot of Mike Thomas, a lot of, there's been everybody.
I mean, what am I even talking about?
I've heard people, Joe Washington, I got a lot.
I got Clinton Portis a lot.
A lot of Alvin Camara as the comps for Bill.
I don't see Alvin Camara.
I don't see Joe Washington.
I view those backs in the same way I think about like Marshall Falk and Warwick Dunn, guys that were, you know, essentially running backs who were pass receivers as much as they were runners.
But if we're just talking about it stylistically, yeah, I see like a Dalvin Cook is a good one.
A Terry Allen is a good one.
You know, in terms of the greats, I don't know, there's, he has a little bit of a little bit of a little.
bit of an upright style. His total
productivity is based on, for me, number one,
he has great vision as a runner. I always mention, you know,
Rigo all those years would say, no, it wasn't my speed,
it wasn't my power, it wasn't my size. It was my eyes.
It was my vision. That's what made me what I became.
and running backs, their eyes, their vision is number one.
And he sees it, especially between the tackles.
You can see, like, sometimes it's like, whoa, he's through whatever crease there was
with just kind of one cut, a little bit of patience, and it's like didn't look like there was anything there,
but he just popped out for five, six, seven yards.
He's averaging six point six yards per carry, tops in the league.
All the advanced numbers are really kind to him.
So we'll see.
I think he's definitely the guy now.
I think if we were waiting for one guy to emerge from the pack
to be the guy that gets 15, 16, 17 carries a game,
it's not going to be 25, but it's him.
And by the way, I think it should be him.
100% should be him.
I got this from our guy, Dr. Ed.
Dr. Ed wrote, where is it? Hold on.
I'll have it here in a second.
I read it on radio, so I wasn't going to read it today, but I should because I was wrong.
Okay, Dr. Ed writes, as the volunteer historian of your show,
I reviewed your reaction when the skins drafted Bill.
You said he had really good speed, decent vision, and great cutback ability,
a perfect fit for his own run scheme.
I did say that, and by the way, I still feel that.
You liked him, called him athletic and explosive,
but thought he was more of a change of pace guy than a 20-carry a game-back guy.
You gave the pick a B-C-plus and said you'd wished they'd traded for Damien Martinez,
the Miami back who got drafted by Seattle.
And Dr. Ed says, by the way, he was drafted by Seattle in the seventh round,
waived, re-signed to the practice squad, and then released on September 19th.
Kevin, I think you deserve a B for your draft analysis of Bill.
Actually, no, I get a D-minus for Bill.
I wanted them to draft.
There were a couple of backs.
Damien Martinez was definitely one of them.
I didn't know anything about Bill.
I had never heard of them.
And then I watched the stuff at New Mexico after he got drafted,
and you could see why they drafted him.
You could see why he got drafted.
And the explanation for not getting drafted higher is that he played one game at Arizona last year, Tommy,
and then was ruled ineligible based on how it all started, you know,
was it Alabama State first and then New Mexico?
I think it was Alabama State.
I think that's what it was.
I'm going to get that right here.
I mean, as far as an Adam Peters grade for that draft,
and they don't have one high enough
when your seventh round pick is one of your best offensive weapons.
Right, right.
Let's remember.
Alabama State is where he was before New Mexico.
The greatest win, the greatest draft win in the history of this franchise.
is Chris Hanberger, who was drafted 17, and became a Hall of Fame linebacker.
That's got to, that has to be in terms of the lowest round picked, turning into a Hall of Famer, for sure.
Yeah.
Well, I'm sure there have been some free agents who weren't drafted.
Oh, yeah, right.
In terms of the draft, you know, 17th back then, yeah.
Anyway.
But seventh is pretty impressive in this day and age.
Yeah.
Look, the one thing that I mentioned many times over, and it really upset many of you, was,
hey, don't call me on board for this Kroski Merit pick.
Because over the summer, I mean, you know, our fan base did what it does.
You know, the Sam Howell, the Taylor Heineke stuff, the Eric B. Enemy stuff, where they were already anointing this guy.
By the way, that's what's happening right now after just 43 NFL carries.
He's looked good.
I can't deny that.
I feel much differently about Bill's future right now than I did Sam Howell or Taylor Heineke's future after they played a good game or two.
But I said many times over to the point where people got pissed off.
If you look back at the draft over the last 10 years, there's only one.
one seventh round running back that's made a contribution to a team. And that's Isaiah Pacheco
in Kansas City. Every other seventh round running back is either out of the league or is barely
hanging on and barely plays. So just looking at that, the odds are stacked against him. Now,
this was a very deep running back class. A lot of really good running backs in this class,
which is why, you know, I thought they would take a running back either on night two or on, you know, earlier on day three.
And, you know, Ben remember reported and said it wasn't even a report, had a hunch that Brian Robinson,
Jr. may not be on the opening day roster. I actually thought before the draft, there was a chance Brian Robinson,
Jr. wouldn't be on the roster. But when they didn't use any early third round picks or a night two,
pick on a running back, then I'm like, well, he's going to make the team because they just
drafted a guy in the seventh round. The seventh rounders, you don't usually expect them to make the
team. I don't know what they really thought of the guy. They obviously liked him. They picked him.
But yeah, and maybe he should have gone earlier because he only played one game last year.
And maybe a full season at Arizona, and we would have thought much differently about old Bill.
and maybe we would have known to call him Bill
had he played a whole year at Arizona
last year rather than
Jacori. I like him.
I like him a lot and
it doesn't matter what round he was.
This could be in
the other seventh round pick
of the last 11 years
that ends up being really good.
I think he's got a chance. He's got great vision,
great feel. He did fumble.
Can't have that as a problem. Hopefully that
doesn't develop into a thing
because fumbling is a no-no in the NFL
unless you're just so great we can't keep you off the field.
Yeah.
I think some of our fans think he's so great already.
We can't keep him off the field.
Of course.
Quinn pointed out that he didn't let the fumble affect the rest of his game moving forward.
True.
Well, he had one carry after that.
He had one carry after that on that final drive.
Did you know he was the MVP in the East West Shrine thing?
Yes, I didn't know that.
This from your guy, Ian.
Ion, come on, man, this dude is just a guy when JD5 isn't on the field.
So what's interesting about old Bill is that his two best games have been with Jaden Daniels on the field.
field. Against the Giants in the opener, 10 carries 82 yards. Jaden was on the field. And against the
Chargers, 14 carries 111 yards with Jaden on the field. Against Las Vegas, 8 for 26, 3.3 yards.
Against Atlanta, 7 for 47, that's still pretty damn good. And we thought he or Rodriguez should
have gotten the ball more. And against Green Bay, nothing worked that night. Although I wanted him
to get the ball more. He was four for 17, which wasn't bad.
actually, considering how little else they were able to generate offensively.
But Ian's point actually is a good one.
It's an obvious one.
He diminishes this kid, you know.
He does.
Too much.
I totally agree.
I actually really like him, regardless of the fact that Jaden elevates the running game with him being on the field.
By the way, so does Marcus Marietta, just not at the same level that Jaden does.
but we've been talking about this for 13 years now going back to 2012, all right?
When you have a legitimate dual threat quarterback, and Mike Shanahan was the one that explained
the whole thing. He's like, it's 11 on 11 in the run game that hasn't existed traditionally
or historically. The quarterback is not a part of the run game, meaning he's not the runner,
and he's not a blocker. He's not a potential blocker.
So really, after he hands the ball off, it's 10 on 11.
But when the quarterback's involved as a runner, it's 11 on 11,
and you've got 10 blocking, not 9 blocking for the running back.
And that's a major offensive advantage.
And when you use the quarterback as part of the run game in the zone read attack,
meaning option attack, and you've got to play quarterback,
And you got to be, by the way, that helps your play action.
It helps everything.
This is why I said last year, I was very surprised that Brian Robinson, Jr.
And other backs didn't feast more because Jaden was such a threat as a running quarterback,
as a dual threat quarterback.
And by the way, he's more than a dual threat quarterback understood.
But I think that a guy like Kroski Merritt and even Rodriguez and McNichols, they're going to benefit
from the same thing that, you know,
Derek Henry's benefited from, all these other Baltimore running backs
who have actually been productive with Lamar.
Same with James Cook in Buffalo.
When you've got that kind of a quarterback,
it is just easier for everybody.
With that said, I still love his running style,
and I think he's good and talented.
But he's going to benefit, like Alfred Morris did,
from RG3 being a runner.
Yes.
Yes. So that is, look, that doesn't make him much different from most of the skill positions on the field for Washington.
Yeah.
They're all better when Shane Daniels is in the game.
Yeah. They won a game pretty handily on Sunday without Terry McLorn, without Noah Brown,
you know, two of their best three, or at least, you know, Terry for sure.
and it's because of the quarterback being back.
Yes.
Yes, it is.
Yeah, and I'll tell you what, man, Debo Samuel.
He is something else.
He's legit when he's healthy.
Always has been.
And this is an even better situation, I think, for him.
Yeah, I mean, if you're a defense, you've got to know where that guy is all the time.
Right.
All right, more football to talk about, including last night's really good game,
and we just saw this, there was a trade in the NFL today.
We'll get to that, the baseball, and more after these words from a few of our sponsors.

my bookie, Tommy, before we started to record the show. Some updated, you know, prop bet numbers.
over under numbers for the season.
Washington, before this season began,
the over under number on wins was nine and a half.
That's still the number after five games.
So for those of you that thought and think,
yeah, this is going to be a season that flirts with 8 and 9, 9, and 8.
The number hasn't changed.
It's still 9.5.
I think that is a good sign.
I also was looking at just divisional odds,
and they have not updated the NFC East odds.
They've got every other division except for the NFC East.
And I think the reason for that is right now,
there's a lot going on in Philadelphia,
a lot going on in Philadelphia with that team.
And I don't know that anybody knows what to make a Philly.
I'll give you the updated NFC.
East odds when they put them up there.
They've got all the other division
odds. But I think it's going to
be interesting because I think Washington
might be narrowing the gap
on Philadelphia. And by
the way, Dallas may be
narrowing the gap. You want to hear
something pretty wild, Tommy?
And this is across the board at every
sports book. And I'm looking at it
right now and it's actually even crazier
than I thought. The AFC
North right now, the Ravens are
one and four.
One and four. The Steelers are three and one. Do you know who the favorite to win the AFC North is right now? Right now.
The Ravens. Right now, at my bookie, the Ravens are a minus 105 favorite. The Steelers are plus 117. And then Cincinnati's plus 1,500, Cleveland's plus 1,800. I talked about this maybe yesterday on the show. I mentioned that the Ravens basically have the same.
odds as Pittsburgh to win the
AFC North.
They don't think the Ravens are
done by a long shot.
And the reason for that is
they play the Rams
at home this week. They're an eight-point
underdog. And that'll
drop them more likely than not
to one and five. But then they
have a buy. They'll likely get
Lamar Jackson back if they don't get them back
this week. And then they play the
Bears, Dolphins,
Vikings, Browns,
Jets, Bengals, before they get the Steelers for the first time, and then they play the Bengals
again. And the Steelers, clearly nobody's buying them. The odds makers aren't at this point,
buying them. Not yet anyway. They're coming off of their buy week after playing in Dublin
last week in beating Minnesota. But that's pretty unusual. When a team is one,
and four, and another team is
three and one. And by the way,
the Ravens have been throttled. I mean,
blown out, a 44 to
10 by the Texans.
And they are still
the favorite in the AFC
North. I think that's pretty wild.
I mean, I don't really
see that. I mean, they've lost a lot.
They've lost almost all their defense.
And a lot of those guys
aren't coming back anytime soon.
Yeah.
And there's lots of questions about Zach Gore there.
Their young defensive coordinator.
Right.
And last week, last week after the game in Baltimore,
John Hawbaugh left the field with booze coming down on him.
I thought you were going to say with booze in a brown bag underneath his arm.
Yeah, no, he was booed and they want him to fire Zach Gore and all of that.
But, you know, these seasons, man, they are long.
I mean, they go by quickly, but 17 games and the number of changes week to week.
Would it surprise me if Baltimore, when we get to early December is right back in it
with still the two games head-to-head with the Steelers?
I don't think it would surprise me.
I think the Steelers actually, though, they're starting to figure some things out on defense,
which is huge for them because that's what was really letting them down.
early. Aaron Rogers has played well.
And they've got some, you know, they got a weapon man in D.K. Metcalf.
There's no doubt about that.
MyBooky is the place to bet on sports.
Get there by going to the Kevin Sheeonshow.com slash my bookie.
And again, using DC Reload as the promo code.
Speaking of the AFC North, how about this trade just completed?
the Bengals have acquired Joe Flacco, Han, from the Cleveland Browns for a fifth round pick.
Cincinnati is also getting a sixth round pick.
So they're trading a fifth rounder Cleveland is in Flacco to Cincinnati for a sixth rounder.
Yeah, Jake Browning is terrible.
I mean, I wouldn't be surprised if Flacko's in the starting lineup this week.
Who do they play this week?
Oh, my God, they play the Packers this week.
Oh, my God.
I mean, they played their schedule.
Cleveland, the Browns opened up, right?
Here's the schedule.
Cincinnati, and that was...
We're talking about the Bengals now.
No, the Browns, who Flackos had to play.
They opened up with the Benzs.
with Joe Burrow.
Then they were in Baltimore against the Ravens.
Then they played the Packers, and then they played the Lions.
Okay, then he got benched for Dylan Gabriel, who I, if the guy weren't five foot nine,
I think Dylan Gabriel would be a real deal NFL quarterback to keep an eye on because he,
watching him, that dude processes quickly and the ball is out quickly, but he's just so short.
But now Flacco arrives in Cincinnati
just in time to go play the Packers again
if he ends up starting this week.
You know what?
That's a move where it's like
Jamar Chase and T. Higgins are probably going,
can you just get somebody
that can throw the football down the field?
Yes.
Just anybody.
That can see it when we're running down the field.
Yeah.
man
interesting
I don't know if he can't start
this week Kenny
I doubt he can start this week
but God Jake Browning I bet on the Bengals
two straight weeks and
they actually had a shot for a backdoor
cover on Sunday but they didn't get there
because he took a safety
at the very end
I was actually thinking
my God that's where Kirk
cousins should go
but
Atlanta
by all reports, and Gratziano had this and his thing, they don't want to let him go. And the price is just way too high right now. And it's not just the compensation of probably needing a second or a third round pick, but they want the team that trades for him to pick up the majority of the money that's owed him. And that's a major deterrent for, and by the way, it's possible that Burrow comes back this year. But I think, since,
Cincinnati would have been much better off going and getting cousins with Chase and Higgins.
The offense would have run much better and you would have had a chance to win some games before getting Burrow back.
But anyway, Flacco in the division, he's now played for Baltimore, Cleveland, Cincinnati.
Only Pittsburgh's missing, Tommy, from that division.
Yeah.
Shefter tweeted this.
Joe Flacco getting traded from the Browns to the Bengals
is the third intra-division trade involving a quarterback this century.
Do you know what the other two were?
One of them.
Donovan McNabb.
There you go.
McNabb to Washington in 2010.
And you won't get this one.
But Drew Bledsoe to Buffalo in 2001 after Brady had taken over.
as the QB.
The game last night was a really entertaining football game.
I mean, we've had some good football games in prime time.
Last Thursday night, San Francisco Rams game was so good, so intense.
The Sunday night game between the Bills and the Patriots was excellent.
And then Drake May looked great, really, really good.
And then last night, man, that was a ball game.
And Kansas City's two and three.
and they've got Detroit coming to town for Sunday night football.
Trevor Lawrence, you know, tripping over his right guard and getting back up and running into the end zone with Chris Jones not even moving on the play.
You've probably seen that on social media.
But that gave me, by the way, to start this season, I got to knock on wood as I say it because I don't want to jinx it.
Six weeks of the smell test, all six.
have been winning weeks, six straight winning weeks.
Four and three, just barely this week, because I needed Jacksonville last night,
plus three and a half and got it.
I like Trevor Lawrence.
I really like Trevor Lawrence.
He should be way up there.
He's not the quarterback everyone thought he would be when we first saw him.
He's also only 26 years old, and Baker Mayfield and Sam Darnold and all these other guys
are proving that sometimes you've got to wait it out.
Trevor Lawrence, though, the talent, the arm talent is A plus elite.
I mean, he's got to be in the top five in just flat out arm talent.
But I like that team.
I think that team has a shot.
That's funny because that AFC South has always been a dog division.
And now you've got Indy, Jacksonville, both at four and one.
And I wouldn't count Houston out.
I think Houston's too good on defense to count out.
But it was a good football game last night.
And, you know, the Chiefs looked really good at times last night.
But they were 11 and O Tommy last year in one score games.
They are 0 and 3 this year in one score games.
So we'll see.
And they've got the Lions coming up at home.
What is that line?
I haven't even looked at the line yet.
this week other than a couple of them.
I'm going to guess the Chiefs are a three-point favorite at home.
Two and a half.
There are two and a half-point favorite Sunday night football.
Man, we got good primetime games coming up.
I mean, what's the, oh, Thursday's Eagles Giants.
All right.
You didn't watch the game last night, did you?
Were you watching?
I watched a game last night.
I didn't watch that game.
I watched both.
I had both on.
We'll talk about the baseball next.
after these words from a few of our sponsors.
All right, Tommy.
Tell us about Shelley's.
Well, Shelly's backroom at 1331 F Street, Northwest in the district.
I was there last Thursday night, and like I've told you before, it was baseball Shelly's last Thursday.
No football?
You know, the, well, no, they have six TVs in the main dining room.
Right.
The main room.
They have two in their auxiliary room.
and six in the main dining room, and the Yankees Red Sox game three was on,
and then also the Thursday night football game was on.
Five of the six TVs had the baseball game on.
You were right.
Shelly's that night.
You were right.
Well, it's playoffs versus regular season.
Yes.
Yes.
And you were right, the Thursday night football, even with the outstanding rating,
that the game got for Yankees Red Sox, it was half of what the Thursday night
Oh, really? Even on Amazon, it did half the number of 49ers Rams.
Wow. Jesus, the NFL.
Pretty much.
So, like, that game did a 7.4 for Red Sox Yankees, and I think the Amazon game was like 14-something.
There was a time, Tommy, in this country where the baseball playoffs would be on right in the middle of an NFL Sunday,
and people were watching baseball.
But that time has long passed.
Yes.
And I've told you about baseball, Shelly's.
Well, tomorrow night, it'll be hockey shelly.
Yeah.
Caps.
The Capitals open up tomorrow night at Capitol 1 Arena against the Bruins.
And I can tell you from experience that before Caps game,
Shelly's is filled with Capitol fans.
And after a Caps game, Shelly is filled with Capitol fans.
during the game, the Capitals are on TV throughout Shelly's backroom.
It's a great place to watch numerous sporting events, but basically local.
Shelly's is a local operation, okay?
And they fall and they commit to local teams like Maryland football, like Capitol's hockey, all that.
Shelly's back, like the Nationals in baseball.
Shelly's backroom supports their local teams.
teams. You can find out more
at shelley's backroom.com.
No discussion of the menu today,
and I'm starving, so I thank you for doing
that. Question for you,
are you going to go
to the Caps' Bruins game
tomorrow night?
You know, you put me on the spot because
I typically go to the home opener.
I know you do.
I can't go
because I have a previous commitment.
Okay. So I can't
go. But I have a column in
tomorrow's paper talking about
Alex Ovechkin and this whole question of whether or not this is last season or not.
You know, the quest for 900 is a big deal in the sport.
You know that, right?
I mean, I guess it is.
Well, Joe B's told me that 900 that this will be a big countdown here early in the season.
It'll be over in five minutes.
He only needs three.
Yeah, I know.
I know.
Then what do we do for the rest of the year?
Twitter off thumbs?
Well, I don't know. It's hockey.
I'm wondering when you go to Capital One to see hockey, because you don't really go to see the Wizards.
That's been a decade-long thing.
Do they have a spot for you?
By the way, you know something?
I don't think I'm alone with not going to see the Wizards.
Well, I understand that.
But I'm wondering, is there a place to smoke a cigar?
outside the arena.
Yeah.
Yeah.
There's a place I smoke.
I sit on like a little
cement
area
on 6th Street usually.
Okay.
And Ted has actually driven by
and seen me smoking.
Although now he may say
something about it,
who knows.
Yeah.
Yeah.
But yeah, I usually have a
pre-game smoke
at hockey games
outside the arena.
And all the security
there, just like most of the security at Northwest Stadium, were very friendly and always accommodating to me.
Always.
You know?
Yes.
Of course I know.
Yes.
You know?
But no, I won't be able to make it to the home opener.
But, you know, there's a lot of optimism about the team because they outperformed what people
expected them last year.
That's true.
You know, they're doing this rebuild without really missing a step in terms of, you know,
of being competitive.
They made it to the second round at a playoff last year.
They did.
They won their first playoff round series since they won the Stanley Cup.
Right.
When they beat Montreal.
And that may be one of the reasons why Alex Olvechkin is going to stay around past this year.
I think maybe he likes what he sees.
I think he's excited and may be rejuvenated by some of these young players they're bringing in.
And the coach, Spencer Carberry, who won coach at the year.
last year in the National Hockey League.
Well, let's not forget that the surprise season that led to a playoff birth and a first-round
series win over Montreal, Alex Ovechkin was a big part of it.
He led the team in goals.
He was second on the team in points.
Yes, third best score in the league.
Yeah, and he missed a bunch of games.
He missed a broken leg.
Yeah.
He's the guy, I think if he chooses to, he could play.
You know, I went back and looked for my article.
There have been 51 players in the league that have played past 40 years of age.
Okay, like Yager.
And one that played until he was 50.
Yes, Gordy Hale.
Right.
Yes.
But Yager played in the league to he was 45.
Right.
I think if O'Fetchkin, you know, I think people had thought that, you know,
this is the last year of Ovechkin's contract.
So this would be the last year he'd play.
Right.
He'll retire.
He'll go play in Russia for a year with the KHL, sort of like a celebratory season,
and then go drink beer and hang out with his family.
But he may be too good and maybe having too much fun to call it a career.
Yeah.
All right.
Hockey is here.
The NBA will be here before we.
know it, that wonderful NBA regular season product.
So we've got to talk about the baseball playoffs.
Before I get to last night and the decision the Phillies made in the bottom of the
ninth, which I'm still shaking my head at, did you have a problem on Sunday with Toronto
pulling their starter, you savage, in the sixth inning with a no-hitter going only at a 78
pitch count, 11Ks
one walk,
just absolutely baffling
the Yankees through 5 and a
third. They pulled them, look,
they were up 11 to nothing
in the game. So the game
was score-wise.
They didn't need him
to pitch, but did you have an issue
with them pulling a starting
pitcher in a playoff game who had a
no-hitter and a fairly
low pitch count?
No, I didn't, because
one thing, he's a rookie.
I don't know
what his,
how much he's ever pitched in the minor league.
Okay,
but I,
he's barely pitched in the big leagues.
Okay.
So he's a rookie.
I think that you risk damage to his arm
if you push him needlessly
at that point.
You know,
every pitch he throws in that game,
it's a pitch he can't throw
the next round maybe. No, I have no problem with that.
I don't either. I mean, I can only imagine it.
It's not a regular season game. It's 11 to nothing. It's 11 to nothing.
And again, he's a rookie. He's not Jack Morris.
Yeah. So he doesn't have 130 pitches in that arm, probably.
So I watched the Dodgers Phillies. I am definitely into that series. I just want to see more
of those Bryce Harper clutch delivering big time in the postseason moments.
And he hasn't done that here in the first two games.
No, he has.
None of the big three have.
Right.
By the way, Otani's only got one hit in these first two games too.
But to your point, Turner, Schwerber, and Harper, not great.
Turner did have the one RBI but got up at the end in the bottom of the night.
But God, Tommy, for those of you that didn't watch the game last night,
It's four to one going to the bottom of the night.
The Phillies are about to go down two games to none.
In a series, they were favored to win.
In fact, the Phillies were the favorite to win the whole thing.
And they go single, double, and then another double.
And it's four to three.
And we've got runners and we've got a runner on base.
All right.
We've got a runner on second, four to three, nobody out.
And the next hitter, Stott comes up.
And he bunts.
He's trying to bunt the guy on second over to third so that a sack fly ties the game.
And he bunts into a fielder's choice where Muncie makes a great play and throws to third in time to get the runner going from second to third.
So now you've got a runner on first and one out, down four to three.
I hated that.
When he squared to bunt on the first pitch, which was a ball, I'm like, why would you?
you do this? You can win this game in the bottom of the ninth. You got a runner on second
with nobody out. You're not even at risk of a double play here. Why wouldn't you just let him
swing? I hated that. What did you think? Oh, I hated it. Oh, God. Again, a manager
is overthinking a situation. I'm hoping that's not something he got from the front office.
I don't think it is.
I think that was a manager's call.
I mean, they had momentum.
Oh, my God.
They had the momentum.
They were going to, they could have won the game with, I mean, two batters with two more hits.
He could have won it on the home run there.
I just, why would you give it out?
You got a slow runner at second.
You got a slow runner at second at Costalano.
Right.
He was lucky he got that second, got in the second base.
Yeah, it was very close.
Yeah, it was very close.
You know, that probably.
wasn't the smartest decision with no outs.
It probably would have been a smarter decision to say at first,
but he took a risk and it worked for him.
But he's not fast.
So was this a decision panned by everybody or not?
I think so.
Yeah, it was.
Oh, couldn't.
It was.
It was a terrible.
It sucked all the air out of the stadium.
All of the air out of the stadium.
Unbelievable.
That place is so good.
You show no faith in your lineup that just came back to make this a
ball game. I understand they didn't do anything for the first eight innings.
But now they're on a roll. There's momentum and in all places, filling. They feed off the
crowd. Oh my God. It's such a great crowd. Yes.
It was a bad call and I think they're done now. I think they're done.
I was, you know, I was trying to figure out in basically there was really no chance for
a Harper to get up again in the game unless it went to extra innings, unless they tied it.
Because Turner got up at that point with two outs and runners on second and third,
because Kepler grounded into a fielder's choice after another single, by the way.
That's what really drove me nuts is after Stott, you know, bunted and they throw the guy out at third.
Next hit her up.
Next hit her up, Bader, he singles.
That would have been game tied.
I can't look if you're if there's an out if there's one out and a runner on second
I'm if no if there's if there's no outs runner on second and you haven't started the
inning the way you've started it with single double double two runs in four to three
all right and you've got a runner on second and nobody out I understand
the sack bunt to get the runner to third to try to tie the game up.
But I don't understand it there, not with, you know, runners that had just come in,
and you got a runner on second and scoring position.
You got worst case, three opportunities to drive him in with a base hit.
Yeah, and Costalado, by the way, after the game, talk about the Philly fans,
he basically ripped the fans.
What did he say?
He said they're front runners, and they aren't front runners.
Yeah.
They're just passionate front runners.
Yeah.
I mean, if you're good, they love you.
If you suck, they hate you.
Welcome to Philadelphia.
But everyone knows that.
Yeah.
That's Philadelphia.
It goes with it.
When you're good, you get passion like no other team in baseball.
Right.
But when you're bad or when you do something like that, yeah, you're going to hear the booth.
You know, I mean, this guy, he's played with the Phillies for years.
he should know better than to say something like basically saying, you know,
we got the wind at our backs, you love us, when we're fighting the wind, you hate us.
Well, that crowd was absolutely lit in the ninth until that attempt to move the runner over with the bun.
Yeah, I hated that.
Shwarber's ice cold.
I mean, this guy, you know, he's going to finish second right behind Otani in the MVP.
Probably.
He hasn't, I think he's gone something like 20-something at bats without a hit or something going back to the end of the regular season.
Obviously to the end of the regular season.
Harper had a chance with runners on, two runners on in the bottom of the sixth in a nothing, nothing game.
He had a really good at bat and ended up striking out and then had another good at bat in the ninth with a runner on after.
Turner had singled home the first run and flyed out to center.
You know, it's these short series, man, best out of five.
I think this round should be best out of seven.
Sorry.
I don't mind the wild card round being best out of three.
I think this round should be best out of seven.
You've played 162 and your top-seated teams are on the verge of playing three games and being
out.
Make the other team win four.
I got no problem with three out of five.
I'm okay with it.
Do you think the Yankees stay alive tonight?
No, I don't think so.
Maybe tonight, but I think it's irrelevant.
I think the Yankees are cooked, too.
The Mariners Tigers game series, I'm very interested in.
I mean, because the Mariners, I think, are a lot better in what everybody,
you know, we don't pay attention to the Seattle Mariners here.
No.
You know, they're invisible.
They're a lot better than everyone thought.
Yes, we do.
I guess what's still in play, which baseball doesn't won, is like, you know, a Blue Jays, I'm sorry, a Brewer's Mariners' Mariners World Series.
Something like that would not be great.
A Brewer's Blue Jays World Series, which, by the way, is very possible.
Very possible.
Yes.
Yes, it is.
They need the Dodgers, the Phillies, the Yankees.
just one of those teams would be good.
All right, well, you know, I'm going to watch the Yankees tonight
see what they can do to see if we can have a couple of...
I mean, I don't want to see three of these four series
end in three straight.
Mariners and Tigers go this afternoon.
And then...
Aaron Nola does pitch tomorrow night for the fills,
but he's had a rough year.
So we'll see what happens in L.A. tomorrow night.
All right.
Anything else?
You had a story or something you wanted to tell me.
Yes, I want to tell you what I did on Sunday.
Okay.
Frederick Fair?
Sunday after, early afternoon.
No.
For my oldest son's birthday, we went to the Maryland Zoo in Baltimore.
Okay.
Have you ever been to the zoo in Baltimore?
Been to the aquarium in Baltimore.
I don't think I've been to the zoo.
No, there's a...
To the zoo in Baltimore.
The zoo in Baltimore, it's a Maryland Zoo, but it's a Baltimore Zoo.
Okay.
In essence.
The aquarium's a big deal.
I've been to that.
Yes.
Yeah.
Well, we did something that was a total surprise to him.
That was pretty cool.
We did something called a penguin encounter where you get to go inside, like, a little, a closed area, sit down,
and they open the door.
Oh, this, like, worker.
there opens the door, and all these penguins walk out.
Oh, my God.
And they hang out with you.
Penguins are cool.
They hang out with you.
They are cool animals.
Yes.
I mean, I'm sitting there petting one.
You know, he's right by my feet, and I'm petting him.
Mm-hmm.
You know, and they're walking around there, and he's giving us a little lecture about the penguins and stuff.
But we're right there.
I mean, right, right at our feet.
You know, walking around, checking us out.
that was a pretty cool thing.
What are the cool things I've done in a long time?
I actually think that that's interesting.
There's something about penguins,
and whenever some of those shows are on
and it's penguins, I always end up watching.
Well, now you can reach out and touch one with this program.
Tommy, I mean, it's like he's at that age, petting zoos.
petting zoos and maybe pumpkin patches.
Who knows?
That in part cheesy.
All right.
Peanuckles is what I meant to say.
Peanuckles is the game that older guys play, right?
You know, my dad used to try to teach me to play pinnuckle, and I never had the patience.
Yeah, I don't even know what it is.
I don't, I mean, I've just heard, I know it's a game.
It's a card game, correct?
Yeah.
Yeah.
I don't know how to play it.
All right.
I'm done with you.
I'll talk to you on Thursday.
Okay, boss.
All right, see you.
All right, back tomorrow.
Steve Suter will have a film breakdown of the Charger game.
