You don't want it.
You don't need it.
But you're going to get it anyway.
The Kevin Sheehan Show.
Here's Kevin.
Day one of training camp out, Nashville is in the books,
and the Nationals just lost Toronto,
5 to 2, losing that home series against the Blue Jays.
The first series loss for the Nats out of the All-Star break.
The show's presenting sponsor is always Window Nation,
86690 Nation,
Window Nation.com if you need new windows. A few tweets from training camp to read to you.
This one, quote, the commander's cornerback room is going to be a major area of strength this season,
closed quote. The next one, quote, defense looks great, more blanket coverage by Sanristil.
He also had an I&T off a deflection, closed quote. A lot of play by play by play.
from training camp today.
This next one, quote,
the D is different,
more speed and cohesion
in the back end. It looks built
for turnovers,
closed quote.
This next one, quote, great connection
between J.D.
and Senate today.
Ertz better be on
his best game, closed
quote.
With that one, you can probably figure out
what I am doing here.
This next one,
Tay Martin is running first-team reps
and looks really smooth out of his brakes.
The next one,
I haven't seen Matt Gay miss a kick yet,
and he's not being talked about enough.
Followed by this one,
Matt Gay is showing off his powerful leg,
just made a few from 50-plus.
And then one more on Matt Gay.
The kicker, Matt Gay, is a huge upgrade.
Good job, AP.
Adam Peters, closed quote.
Yes, I'm sure you've now figured out that I am reading some of the tweets and play-by-play from the beginning of training camp last year.
How about this one?
The defense is night and day from last year.
Joe Witt Jr. appears to have settled in.
Look for big improvement for the D.C., the defensive coordinator, in his second year.
The next one, Lattimore is a baller.
The cornerbacks are the best group on the roster after QBs.
All of these quotes from last year's first few days of training camp.
You guys probably remember from past years,
I don't blame anybody for play-by-playing training camp practices,
but I blame all of you, given that I have given this public service announcement now for many years in a row,
I do blame all of you who have listened to the PSA if you actually buy into it and get excited about it.
Now, they're not all wrong. I found this from last year.
Tunsell is a beast.
He's different than the rest of the O-line.
This investment protecting Jaden is already.
paying off. Yeah, it actually hadn't already started to pay off because they weren't tackling
and Jaden wasn't at risk of being sacked by an opposing player. But that one turned out to be right.
Tunsell was a beast. Yeah, my annual public service announcement at the, you know, sometime early in
training camp, about training camp and preseason games, when we get to those, there will be, you know,
additional PSAs, which is basically just a heads up about, you know, look, what you see,
what you read, what you hear about your favorite football team this time of year,
the majority of it will be wrong.
I mean, dead ass wrong.
I went back and found something early this morning because I had remembered it, and I found
it and played it on the radio show.
I had Dan Quinn on, it may have been the second time.
he was on the show before the 2024 season, his first.
It was right before, or it was during camp, actually.
And I asked him about this time of year and what does he really know?
You'll hear my question and then there's a follow-up to it.
But it is instructive when you get it from the head coach of an NFL team versus from someone like me.
This was Quinn with me two years ago.
is it even remotely possible to know truly how things are going before you've played a real game?
I'd say that's a good question.
One, I think you want to know, like, where's the health of the team?
How are you doing that thing?
Because that's a real factor.
The second thing is for us having not played any regular season games together,
I would say that's a little harder to predict.
But what I can tell you, what I see at practice, good.
practice habits, the finishing, taking care of the ball.
So, like, the habits, you know, that you have, they don't get tacked on, Kevin,
at the end of the championship season, they get tacked on when you put in the work to go.
So, honestly, I can't tell you where we're at, you know, in terms of the wins,
like if we're not in the regular season, but I can tell you that I think you'll like what
you're going to see from the guys in terms of attitude and effort and play style.
So that part, if you get that part right, then you can add a lot of other things on
but if you miss that part, all of a scheme and offense or defense in the world, it didn't
matter if you don't absolutely brand.
Yeah, that makes sense to me.
Winning habits don't magically appear in the middle of a season.
They're developed early on.
I get that.
You know, with that understood, though, I think you know one of the reasons the NFL is so
entertaining, so popular, is that it's so unpredictable.
Teams change so much, you know, year to year.
week to week, really. How long does it take, and you've been in this league for a long time now,
how long does it take before you know what your team really is? How many weeks into the season
does it take before you've figured out what you really have in your team? I'd say it's probably
you have to go through a couple of really adverse, tough situations. What you'll know is we're going to
be a lot of close games in the NFL. I think last year might have been, damn there, 70% of our games
were decided by a score or less.
So in those close fights, Kevin, in those moments, when you see yourself coming out, you know,
on the top of those, then you can tell.
I'd say usually you're, you know, you run games a little bit behind, tackling's not
as sharp as it needs to be because you haven't tackled a lot.
And those are things I think you get better as it goes.
So, but you have to be in some fights, man.
I'd say it's probably halfway through before you really have your team's identity for
this season.
you've been in some fights, you know, who's going to come through in these big moments.
So it takes more than a quarter of the season, I would say, for your identity to really take shape
because you've got to be in some hard fights.
Dan Quinn, from almost two years ago to the day, it was in August of 2024.
I remembered that because it really resonated with me in the moment, the way he described,
you know, this time of year, you know, it's about health, obviously.
and that's something we can see from the outside looking in, how healthy are they?
And we have a sense of who they're better players are,
so you want them healthy and available for the regular season.
But then when he talked about the habits, you know,
that you've got to develop those habits this time of year,
because if you don't develop those habits from the jump,
they don't just magically appear during the season.
That makes sense to me.
And then when he talked about, you know,
when I asked him about how many games before you really know what you have.
And he said, you got to face adversity.
You got to have some of those tough moments and hard fights.
And he said, you know, initially half the season.
And then he, you know, sort of modified that to say, you know,
it really takes more than a quarter of the season before you figure it out.
And he said, you got to be in close games like they were last year.
When he said last year, he was referring to.
him being the defensive coordinator in Dallas in 2023. We know that they did not have a lot of
close games. They had some last year, but last year was not the best. So yeah, I mean, be careful.
You know, that's really the message that I like to provide here this time of year. I don't begrudge
any of the people that are doing play-by-play from training camp. There's an audience for it. And I
understand that. So bless their hearts, you know, for doing it. I don't pay attention to it
unless I'm going to talk about it in the way I'm talking about it now, because I know that it's
mostly wrong. It'll prove to be mostly inaccurate, more so than actually being right. The NFL is
the most unpredictable league in sports. It's just always changing. It's one surprise after another.
You know, what you're certain about one week is a total mystery the next week.
And I'm talking about once you get to the regular season when the real games are being played.
This time of year, impossible, really, to get a true read on much other than things like their health.
You know, and there are a few things.
I remember Ben saying last year very early on, he said,
I think I'm noticing that Brian Robinson, Jr. isn't necessarily.
a favorite here, and I don't think he's going to be on the regular season roster. He said that,
like early in camp. It may have been right before, it may have been during the OTAs in many camps.
And, you know, you can occasionally pick up on things like, man, that guy's running with the
ones a lot more than we thought, which, you know, will usually mean they like him a lot more than
maybe we thought they like that player. But look, they don't show much at all, especially,
when fans are invited to training camp practices and media are around.
They show next to nothing in preseason games.
And look, for our team, a team with two new coordinators and a totally new defense and
offense, we're really not going to know much about this team until the real games begin.
And even then, like Quinn said, it'll take, you know, more than a quarter of the season
to figure it out.
But anyway, with that said, one of the things I do intently listen to this time of year is what is being said by coaches, by players, last night by the general manager, Adam Peters.
Dan Quinn and Adam Peters held their annual night before training camp press conference.
and there were a couple of things that were interesting.
One specific thing that I thought was the most genuine answer of the night for both of them.
And I'll share that with you when we come back.
Also, there was an attempt to ask about Brandon Ayyuk.
More on that after these words from a few of our sponsors.

Adam, what for you, just in a general sense
that you're always looking to improve the team?
When you're evaluating guys to maybe bring in for workouts,
whatever, what role, if any, does kind of a player's social media have in that evaluation process?
That's a good roundabout question.
You are.
Straight badass right there.
I mean, we look at everything, JP.
I mean, it's a great question, but we do look at everything, and we want to make sure it's the right player to be in our locker room,
and our bloodstream and in our culture.
And, you know, we often, you know, we look at that stuff.
I mean, it's not always the first thing we look at.
Obviously, you're looking at the tape, and you talk to.
the teams that the players have been on and how they were in the locker room,
the players that have played with them, and so on and so forth to make those decisions.
But, you know, that's not usually a huge part of it, usually.
Well played.
Both of them.
Adam Peters and Dan Quinn, getting a kick out of the way J.P. Finley asked his Brandon Ayuk question.
This segment of the show is.

So that was the quote and the answer to Brandon Ayuk.
You couldn't ask it directly because they can't speak to Brandon Ayuk directly by name
because there would be tampering risks in that case.
Now, is it possible for that?
them to say, yeah, we don't have any interest in adding any wide receiver to our roster.
We like who we have and there's no plans to do it.
Or could they leak the information to somebody locally or somebody nationally?
Hey, man, all of this conversation about Brandon Ayuk, yeah, count us out.
We're out.
They haven't done that yet.
But I listened to this.
I actually watched this.
And when Adam Peters said, you know, it's a great question, but we do look at everything and, you know, we want to make sure it's the right player to be in our locker room, in our bloodstream, and in our culture.
When I heard that, I mean, to me it was just confirming of what I've thought now for a couple of months, which is zero chance that Brandon Ayuk is going to be in one.
Washington this year anyway. Now, it's interesting because others listened to Adam Peters or watched
Adam Peters and came to a different conclusion because he did say, obviously, you're looking at the
tape and you talk to the teams that the players have been on and how they were in the locker room,
the players that have played with them, and so on and so forth, to make those decisions. But, you know,
that's not usually a huge part of it, meaning social media. Usually, he's. He's,
said. Yeah, I just, to me, it was pretty clear. It's interpretation. It's subjective. If you disagree,
you're entitled to disagree. I had a lot of people disagreeing with me today when I said this on
the radio show. But the discussion about the bloodstream and the culture and the locker room,
he's disqualified himself from their bloodstream, from their culture, from their locker room.
They're not going to place somebody, sign somebody to put on their team that is spent the better part of a month and a half to two months,
insulting publicly the GM, the head coach, and in veiled ways, some of his teammates on social media.
they're just not going to do that.
They're not going to take a guy that literally did not adhere to his contract that the team gave to him,
which was an incredibly beneficial and generous contract at the end of 23 and before the 24 season began.
It was a top five, top six contract in that moment for the position.
And they're not going to look at a guy that literally went against that contract,
breached that contract so that the team could actually void $30 million in guarantees from it
without even a fight from the union on his behalf,
they're not going to look at that person and say, yeah, that's good for our bloodstream,
a good for our culture, good for our locker room,
to have somebody that gets injured and won't even let us monitor the progress
so that we have to then go to, you know, the contract,
and void a bunch of the money that we gave him because he won't let us look at his knee.
You know, I can't.
I was in favor of this back in, you know, May or whenever, before he started on his social media, you know, series.
I said over and over again, I was a big fan of the player.
If you have been listening to me going back to 22 and definitely in 23, I was a big Brandon Ayuk fan.
Brandon Ayyuk was one of those guys I would bring up in the Terry McCoran debates where I would say,
I actually think Ayuk's better.
Like I think this guy is potentially elite.
He is trending in that direction.
He was outstanding in 2023 for the 49ers.
And look, you know, the situation around him different than the situation that's been around Terry.
It was debatable, but I really was a fan of Ayuk, of Ayuk.
And then after this season and everything that happened and it was becoming more clear that he wasn't going to be back with the 49ers,
I've said over and over again up until the social media campaign, I said this is a guy who if he checks out physically and mentally,
and I trust in Adam Peters and I trust in Dan Quinn and the rest of the front office, this would be a tremendous.
Mendous addition, you know, and I said I would be in favor of it if they decided,
we checked him out, physically he's good, mentally he's good, this situation in San Francisco
was a one-off aberration, but I clearly changed my mind after weeks and weeks of him doing what he
did, which was total self-destruction, total self-sabotage. I know some of you still actually
buy into this idea, that this guy's brilliant and he's playing chess to everybody else's
checkers, and that somehow this is part of a grand plan to get out of San Francisco and to land
in Washington. Yeah, have at it with that thought, I just completely disagree. I think that the
immaturity, the self-destructive nature, the self-destructive part is not even debatable.
You know, if you think he's playing chess and that this is absolutely somebody that Washington's going to end up signing because they see what he's doing in the brilliance of it, that's fine.
But we cannot, cannot debate because there's no debate on the fact that he's been self-destructive, incredibly self-destructive, even before the video series, social media series.
I mean, this is a guy that has lost $30 plus million because he breached his contract,
did not simply show up to the team facility once or twice a month to have the team doctors
look at how his rehab was going.
And then this is a guy that literally videotaped himself, breaking the law on a vehicle,
traveling over 100 miles per hour outside of Levi's Stadium, where the 49ers play,
and then posted it on social media,
which led to an arrest warrant that is out for him.
I don't know if it's been issued yet,
because remember a few weeks ago,
he said he's not going back to California
so that they can issue that arrest warrant.
And then this is a guy over the last six to eight weeks now,
whatever it's been,
that has over and over again,
talked a big game, talked in a way in which he publicly demeaned his employer in many ways.
Who knows? Maybe they deserve it. Still not the right way to go about it. But he hasn't taken an action yet.
He hasn't applied for reinstatement. Maybe he will at some point. He hasn't gone face to face with representation or without it with the 49ers.
And then, by the way, did you guys see this?
I mean, this guy yesterday, Kyle Shanahan's accident, severe accident from mid-July.
His Instagram yesterday, you can't win the race if you crash out.
Keep your head up and stay in your own lane.
That, by the way, I think a reference to Kyle actually drive.
drove out of his lane, crossed over into the lane of the oncoming SUV, and that's what caused
the crash.
By the way, Kyle brought 30 reporters into a room yesterday to say it was his fault, even though
it was erroneously reported and even documented as if it was the fault of the 21-year-old
female driver in the SUV. He wanted to make it very clear it was not her fault. It was his fault.
He said that he dropped his phone. His phone dropped between the seat and he was looking down to
try to pick it up and his vehicle swerved over into the other lane. So Brandon Ayuk took a shot at him
for that. I mean, that's how I interpret it as a shot. You really think that Adam Peters and Dan Quinn
want a guy that would literally take a shot, a classless shot at his head coach after a severe
car accident into their bloodstream, into their culture, into their locker room. I think literally
there is zero chance. Look, I said for the last several weeks, things change. And when there's
a talented individual, that person usually gets second, third, and fourth chances. And he could totally
turn around his reputation with some sort of significant makeover, but he hasn't, you know,
seemed interested in doing that as of yet. I think his 2026 season is in jeopardy. I think it's,
at this point, less than 50-50 that anybody would sign him if he was actually sign a bull,
which he's not right now, for this year. But I would bet that in 2027, at that point, if he's
healthy mentally, and I think there's real concern about his mental health. But if he got it together
and he, you know, went on some sort of contrition tour and did a total makeover of his reputation,
he's talented. Somebody will give him a shot. Maybe it's Washington in 2027, but I would
absolutely be floored if it's in 2026. I think the chances literally are zero per person.
at this point.
Then there was something else that Adam Peters and Dan Quinn talked about.
And to me, this was the most convicted they were in any of their answers throughout their 28-minute press conference last night.
It was the very last question of the presser.
And it was about Nick Allegretti, who, by the way, on day one of training camp, here's some news.
this is something that is legitimately real.
He apparently was walked off the practice field early by somebody in their training room.
So he did not end up participating in the entirety of the practice.
I'll read some of the tweets that came out from some of the beat reporters about Nick Allegretty in a moment.
But before today's first practice, you know, if there was any doubt about
what the coaches, what the general manager, what the players in the locker room, think about
the switch from Tyler Beattish to Nick Allegretti. Here was Quinn. Here was Adam Peters to assure
you that all will be well at center. What have you seen from Nick Allegretty to make you
comfortable rolling him out at center even though that's not a position he's played for most of his
career. Yeah, I can start off with it. One, like, high-level competitor. And so we've played well with
Nick in the lineup, that be at Guard, but interior, that's his space. He's played center. He's
played guard, even though you may not have seen him in some of the games, like every week he was,
you know, repting inside to go. So that was a big piece of it. We've got a lot of faith and confidence
in him. It's another one of the positions that we do have competition that we're going for it.
but if Nick was playing on defense, he'd be a green dot.
This is one of the smartest guys on our team now.
Like, when you talk about putting it under control, that's part of playing center.
And he has that targeting, who's this, where's the protection going.
So we've got a lot of confidence in him.
He is one hell of a competitor.
And so he's one of those guys, man, you don't bet against that.
You know, might be a new, but you don't do that with everybody.
but somebody for him, no doubt you do it.
Yeah, I'd probably just echo what DQ said,
and I think the biggest thing, one, he's played it a lot.
He's played all the positions inside,
so he's more than capable of all three of those.
But what stands out to me with Nick is just his leadership,
his command, his confidence, the way the guys gravitate and listen to him.
And so that's a big part of it,
knowing what to do, no one where to go,
no one where to direct the guys,
just the calling up in the huddle.
it's a big deal so um have a ton of confidence in him have a ton of confidence in julian and matt too so
it'll be a great competition but um you know for nick just you know i think the world of them the
whole the whole team thinks the world of them and so um we all have confidence in him yeah he's as
easy a trust a competitor as you can find like you just you count on him and he's going to be in the right
spot making the right call at the right time even when it gets chaotic or i should say especially
what it does like this look didn't come up in the practice okay is what we're going to
going to do. And you have to be in the fire. Some do have that calm in the chaos.
That's a big deal. That was the final question and the final answers of the press conference.
You heard both from Quinn and Peters about Nick Allegrety. And again, I watched that entire thing.
That was the most convicted they were about anything that they talked about. Nick Allegretti,
I mentioned this a few months ago. I talked to somebody who said that the offensive line
room loves Aligretti. They're totally believers in Aligretti and that they actually think in many ways
the communication along the offensive line will be better than it was with Tyler Biotish.
So it certainly sounds like they had no real reservations about losing Tyler Biotish or moving on
from Tyler Biotish, who immediately signed a three-year deal with the Chargers. This was their plan.
drafted Matt Gulbin. They have Julian Good Jones. So they've got other centers in camp. But it sounds
like Allegretti is absolutely the plan there. Now, this morning, as I was doing the radio show,
Channel 9's John Doran reported that Allegretti exited practice pretty early and was walked off the field by
people from their training group. This was Ben Standing a little while ago. Nick Allegretti
exited practice early, as John Dorian from Channel 9 tweeted, with an undisclosed injury.
Dan Quinn spoke before practice, so we'll have to wait until tomorrow for more details. But my
initial understanding is that it's nothing serious. So there you go. Hopefully that is the case.
They seem to be totally convinced on Allegretti.
Doesn't mean they're going to be right,
but they are confident that they are in good shape, in good hands with Nick Allegrety.
Hopefully, has been reported it is nothing serious from day one of camp.
All right, there was some other news.
There were some players, including Jaden Daniels, who spoke on day one of camp.
We'll get to that and a lot more after these words from a few of our sponsors.

Now that the Netflix series quarterback, how did you look at that, have you feel about the experience last
It was cool.
It was cool, like a different side of me, stuff like that.
But it was a cool experience.
I'll say that, man.
Shout to Payne Manning and what they did, how they portrayed it.
And I heard it was a hit.
I haven't watched it.
I'm not going to watch it.
So, yeah, it was a cool experience.
So Jaden's not going to watch the Netflix quarterback series,
which he is one of the four quarterbacks featured.
here in season three. The other three are Joe Flacco, Baker, Mayfield, and Cam Ward. I've watched
all but the final episode. I think I talked about it on the show yesterday with Tommy. I have
really enjoyed it. Once again, I think it's an excellent, you know, series that Netflix has put
together now for a third straight summer. I had the director of the show, Tim Rump, who's actually a DMV
native. I had him on the radio show this morning, and it was his responsibility during all of last
season to be there handling the Jaden Daniels segment of the show. So he had some interesting
insight for sure. Obviously, the season did not go like maybe they thought it would go,
and so you didn't get maybe some of the stuff you would have gotten in 2024. And Jaden, with all
you know, love and respect intended is not an extrovert. You know, he's not a dynamic personality
off the field, although a lot of the on the field stuff was pretty good stuff. By the way, if you want
to listen to that interview, Tim was really, really good in talking about how they put the show together
and the access that they get and whether or not, you know, they're disruptive in the access that they
have and how they put the whole thing together. He was on with me today during the 11 a.m. hour.
In fact, that's hour number two if you go to the team 980.com or the Odyssey app and pull up
the show. This segment of the show brought to you by MyBooky. If you want to bet on NFL futures
in late July or August, my recommendation is MyBooky. They have so much to choose from. It's actually
worth it just to go to mybooky.com or mybooky.ag and just check out all of the offerings.
Even if you're not going to bet them, it's kind of fun to see what the offshore guys are
thinking in terms of this upcoming NFL season. Like I'm looking at the coach of the year odds right
now. John Harbaugh is the favorite at plus 600. So six to one, the new Giants head coach
to be the NFL's coach of the year.
The Ravens head coach, Jesse Minter, has the second best odds at plus 900.
But they've got Super Bowl odds, AFC and NFC Championship odds, division odds, making the
playoffs or not making the playoff odds, season win totals.
Washington's right now at seven and a half.
MVP odds, everything that you could imagine.
Rookie of the year odds.
Everything that you could imagine, betty.
as a future my bookie has up right now. Go to mybooky.com or mybooky.orgie.orgie. Use my promo code,
Kevin, D.C. And you'll get a bonus from MyBooky. The week one odds are up. I mentioned,
I think, yesterday. Philadelphia now down to a four-point favorite over Washington in the season
opener. It's been four and a half, even five in some spots during much of the period since the
schedule came out in May. It's now down to four. By the way, I did see a tweet put out about
current betting for week one via betmgm and the number one play right now for week one of the NFL
season. And I found this to be sort of interesting. But in terms of the number one bet on team
in week one, it's the Tennessee Titans laying three at home against the New York Jets.
So early smell test possibility, the Jets plus three in Nashville, week one against the Titans.
They actually broke it down.
There is much more public action right now on Philadelphia laying the four and the line's
been coming down. That's usually a good sign. I may give out Washington as a week one smell test
pick. Of course, things will change between now and week one. All right. So the first thing that I wanted
to mention is Trey Amos. Adam Peters and Dan Quinn were asked about Amos last night. And this is
what they said. Yeah, I think with Trey, he's doing really well. I think the first thing I'll say is he's
been outstanding in his rehab and really, you know, taking all the things that the medical team
has asked him to do and done them really, really well. With him just had a little soft tissue
soreness in the off-season. We wanted to just take it slow. So he's actually, he's doing really
well right now. Just had a report on him earlier. He should be back soon as well. Just wanted to be
overly cautious there. But he's doing, he's doing great and he'll be back pretty soon.
Adam Peters on Trey Amos last night.
He doesn't seem to be concerned.
They're approaching it with caution.
I would just say that whenever I hear soft tissue,
soft tissue soreness,
about a player at a position like cornerback
or wide receiver or running back or safety,
the positions in which you really need to run, run fast,
be quick,
that it's always at least a small,
red flag.
Those issues tend to linger
more often than they do
with players at other positions.
I remember the summer of
2021, Curtis Samuel, he's fine, he's fine, he's fine,
it's just some soft tissue
and some soreness, it was a hammy, it was a groin.
And all of a sudden, he was on injured
reserve right before this season began.
I'm not suggesting that's going to happen
with Trey Amos, but it's one of those things that
you know, when the injuries take
longer to recover from. And then he's had, in addition to the recovery, some soft tissue
soreness at his position, and they're approaching it with caution as they should be,
just something to keep an eye on. It's a position where they need him. They're going to need him
to be healthy. They're going to need him to grow from what he was last year, which was at times
impressive. I do think Russell Douglas was signed in part because it's a bit of a hedge against his
early availability. We'll see.
But that was one
thing that came out
from the press conference
last night that was
injury related. Today
they put Tressway
and Cain Madrano
on the active, physically
unable to perform list.
Tressway has a peck
injury. Look, it's Tressway.
He's a punter. It's not like he needs camp.
They trust him.
And from some of the reporting, it would appear
that this is not a major thing at all.
Yeah, I mean, those have been sort of the notable transactions, I guess.
I guess they did speak to Armstrong and Wise, both who are on that Pupp list as well.
Ben reported that he was told to expect them to remain on that list for at least a couple of weeks into camp.
I would love to get Dorrance Armstrong and Dietrich Wise back for the beginning of the regular season.
Wise was here briefly last year before the injury.
Armstrong was, you know, we've talked about it, arguably their best defensive player through the first six and a half weeks of last year.
Dan Quinn talked prior to practice today, and there was one thing that I wanted to read, because I don't have the sound from me.
but he was asked about Jacori Kroski Merritt becoming a three down back.
I think actually Ben Standing asked the question.
And I think one of the things with Quinn that we've learned over the two plus years that he's been to coach is listen to the guys who he mentions first when not even, you know, asked to bring up said players because sometimes they are tells on players that are performing maybe a little bit better.
and people on the outside know.
So he was asked, I think, again, by Ben,
to talk about Jacori Kroski-Mertan's growth,
and can he be that three-down running back?
You know, has he developed, has he matured into a guy
that can catch passes consistently, pass block as well,
so he can be in the game on all downs?
And Quinn said, quote,
he definitely has been from the offseason going through it,
digging into him on a bunch, on the past game,
on the return side, the running skills.
He's added seven or eight pounds of lean muscle since the off season.
The work to put in has been there,
but it's been a very competitive group.
He really didn't answer the question,
and then he gets to Rashad White.
And he says,
I'm excited for Rashad to see what he can bring, especially in the passing game.
He's just got great hands.
Like you want to be around somebody who can catch with soft hands.
I know that's a term that we all use, but it's easy.
It's catching, you know, in the different spots.
And one of the things is a running back.
It's the run after catch.
And if you were the running back in this system, it's good to play with Jaden.
If a team's playing zone, Jaden's good enough to put it in.
the correct spot on the correct shoulder.
So when it's caught, the run-after catch opportunity is there.
Not just throwing to a spot, but the specifics of where to go.
We call that drop step.
And so those are the things that I'm excited to see Bill apply and get into his game.
So Rashad White right now, if they had to play a real game, this kind of.
coming Sunday. I would bet big money that Rashad White was on the field more than Kroski Merritt.
Rashad White, by the way, comes up in the Netflix quarterback series a bunch because,
not interviewed-wise, but in some of the games, because he was a big part of the Baker-Mayfield
story on offense. Also, by the way, Netflix quarterback series, they did a flashback to
Baker Mayfield when he signed with the Rams on a Monday and had to play on Thursday night football,
This was 20, 21, I think.
This was the game that sort of turned around his career
because his career was going south and in a hurry
after he got released in Carolina.
And the game-winning touchdown pass he threw
to beat the Raiders on Thursday night football
after 48 hours to prepare was to Van Jefferson.
I like Van Jefferson.
I like the signing.
And I think guys like Rashad White and Van Jefferson
are going to be.
much more significant to this upcoming season than maybe some of you thought when they got signed,
maybe more than just some of you.
I think a lot of people were skeptical about Rashad White or about Van Jefferson.
I am not skeptical about Rashad White.
Van Jefferson's going to have a harder time because there's a lot of players that are vying for,
you know, wide receiver spots two through six.
it's two through seven, we'll see.
But I think they're going to have a lot more trust early in the season in
Rashad White being out there.
On the road at Philly, new offense, on the road at Dallas, new offense, new coordinator.
They're going to want, you know, he's not an Austin Echler, you know, replica because they
have different styles for sure.
But the confidence in a veteran running back to be where he's supposed to be, to pick
up the pass blocking responsibilities that they should be picking up. I just have a feeling two
road games to start the season. And then Seattle coming in in week three, we're going to see a
lot more of Rashad White early than we are, Jacori Kroski Merritt. We'll see. Plenty of time
between now and then, and they both have to stay healthy. I know that White was somebody that they
were very impressed with during the offseason. Van Jefferson as well. You know, I've
heard this said about Van Jefferson now multiple times from multiple people of pros, pro.
And man, we know one thing they like. They like pros, pros. I'd like some more talent and some
more, you know, explosiveness. But, you know, in a season in which they're rolling out a new
offense with a new coordinator, they're not going to want to have a lot of inexperience
on the field early in the season.
That would be my guess as it relates to, you know, guys like White and even a guy like Van
Jefferson.
You know, the, now, Diami Brown's got some experience and Trelon Burks has some experience.
It's, you know, not like they have, you know, all rookies on offense.
And the one rookie they do have is a guy that can really run and catch, apparently,
and Antonio Williams.
We'll see.
He has not yet played a real game.
Also, a piece of news.
Wes Welker is going to coach Washington's tight-ends group with Ben Steele on, you know, out after the DWI
to their tight-ends coach.
So Wes Welker was coaching the tight ends during OTAs and mini-camps, and he will continue
to coach the tight ends with the season now underway.
Yeah, I'm just looking through my notes.
if there's anything else,
you know, transactional or otherwise.
No.
And Jaden spoke today,
and there wasn't a whole lot to it.
Ben did ask him at the end
if there's any sort of,
you know, housewarming gift
that he's thinking about purchasing,
as in for Brandon Ayuk,
who apparently purchased a home in Northern Virginia.
No early appearances from Ayuk.
I know some of you believe,
and it wouldn't shock
me, he might just show up at camp one day, especially when the fans, when it's open to the fans,
which I think the first day is August 1st, which would be what, this Saturday?
All right, we'll get to the Nats loss and some other NFL news after these words from a few of our
sponsors.
He's walked, come up with an RBI double and punted in this game.
He's a curveball, sky to center, Varsha started back, now he races forward to right to right.
center, squeezes it, and ends the inning.
The Nationals get won, but Louis Farland does a good job coming in to make sure it wasn't
any more.
The Nats had two chances with the bases loaded in the bottom of the eighth down five to two.
Dalyle struck out, and then as you just heard, Jacob Young popped out.
If you get a chance and you haven't done it, rate and review this podcast wherever you're
listening to it. Apple and Spotify in particular are very helpful for us. Both give you an opportunity
to rate this show five stars. That's the best case for us. So if you think the show deserves five
stars, rate it five stars. Also following the podcast, that's as easy as hitting the plus
or the follow button is something that really helps us out a lot as well. So a tough loss for the Nats today
at the park. So they lose two of three to Toronto, a team that had lost eight of eleven coming into this
series. The Nats had won series against the A's, Rockies, and Diamondbacks coming out of the All-Star break.
And this was a team that certainly looked like they could take two of three from. They don't get it done.
And they're sitting now at a game above 500, and now two games back of the Wild
card spots. It's actually really punched up in the National League standings right now in the
wild card race. The Cubs have that first spot with some room to spare, but the second and third
spot are right now shared by Arizona and Philadelphia. The Phillies have lost eight of their last
10, and they just got swept by the Marlins, who had a long losing streak heading into that series.
But behind Arizona and Philly are the Padreys.
raise a game and a half back, the Marlins two games back, the Pirates two games back, the Nats
two games back, and the Cardinals, three games back. Now, those are games back of not only the third
wild card spot, but the second wild card spot as well. So two spots available. Big series for
Washington coming up against the Braves on the road. That starts tomorrow night. Four games against
the Braves, which will take them through the weekend. And then Monday, they start.
a series in Philadelphia, and that is the day of the trade deadline. Some news from around the NFL
where now all training camps are underway in Cincinnati, pass rusher Shamar Stewart, who remember
was a first round pick in 2025, and they hoped he would eventually be the replacement for
Trey Hendrickson when they would eventually lose Trey Hendrickson, which they did this offseason,
as Hendrickson signed in Baltimore.
But Stewart missed a bunch of the season last year with injuries,
had just one sack in eight total games.
He was carted off the field in Cincinnati with a left leg injury.
And I'll tell you, man, that's for that team,
they've got to improve defensively.
Because with Joe Burrow back and all of the weapons,
they'll be a great offensive team more likely than not.
But their defense stunk last year.
stunk the year before. Remember, they added Dexter Lawrence to that defense, but I look at teams
like Cincinnati, Dallas, Washington, and it's like those teams with the quarterbacks they have
and in Dallas and Cincinnati in particular, the supporting cast offensively, they should
be really good offensive football teams, but their defenses have been so bad recently that it's
really limited their upside. Cincinnati for sure. Now, Joe Burroughs' absence last year heard him,
but, you know, Flacco played well enough that if that defense had been, you know, decent
enough, they probably would have made the playoffs. They certainly would have had a chance.
Meantime, things are really messed up in Atlanta where Tuatunga Lowa isn't practicing. He's got
an injury. Remember, Pennix Jr.'s coming off an injury. They went out and signed
Cooper Rush to be in camp.
The 49ers have a concern at wide receiver.
Remember, they added Mike Evans, but no Brandon Ayuk.
Ricky Pearsall did not participate.
He's got swelling in the PCL.
He missed a lot of last season for that injury.
So, you know, these are things that you watch because teams that have, you know,
especially at positions where you,
they have to come up big in certain spots.
And then they've got injuries, you know, Cincinnati on defense, the 49ers in their
wide receiver group.
Those can be major storylines heading into the first part of the season.
Good news for the Giants, Malik Neighbors apparently looks really good.
You know, this was one of these injuries from last year that apparently was much worse than
anybody thought and required, you know, more time and, and ended up being just something that
was not recovering at the rate that they thought it would. And there was some talk as recently
as OTAs that Malik neighbors might not be available to the Giants in the first portion of the
season. But today, with their training camp underway, the talented wide receiver from
LSU was a full go in their full team practice.
And that's the first work that they've seen on that serious knee injury,
which happened in week four last year.
And Harbaugh said it looks good.
And he is, you know, it might be a little bit longer before it's full practice in every
single drill, but there is a lot of optimism about Malik neighbors in New York,
which if you're a giant fan,
that had to be your biggest concern entering this season.
And then running backs, Bejohn Robinson and Jemir Gibbs are doing the Holden thing,
where they are at camp, but they're not practicing until they get a contract extension.
And of course, they're going to be looking for something in the Saquan-Barkley range.
Remember, Saquan-Barkley last year hit the mother load for the position
with a contract that averages over $20 million a year,
highest paid running back in NFL history.
You know, I mentioned the other day on this show
that Vita Vaya was holding out
because he hasn't had his contract resolved yet in Tampa.
Today, Todd Bowles said that he was held out of practice
for some sort of tweaked injury.
They're going to hold them out
until they get this contract worked out.
There's a lot of discussion that the buccaneers could look to trade him.
I'm not in favor of Washington trading for Vita Vaya necessarily.
I'd need to know for sure that they could get a reasonable deal done with him.
I do think immediately Vita Vaya becomes your starting nose tackle, you know, in your base 3-4.
Vita-Vaya has been a much more consistent player and a dominant at times run stopper.
Duran Payne and Vita Vaya came out in the same year, 2018.
They signed their extensions at essentially the same time, and they're both in the same
position playing on the last year of a deal with no guaranteed money.
The difference is there's a market for Vita Vaya, both from a new contract standpoint
and then potentially from a trade standpoint.
That does not appear to have been the case with Duran.
Duran's not looking for a new deal.
The team's not offering a new deal.
And I do believe that they at least considered dealing Duran Payne in the off season for something,
but I don't think anything worthwhile was offered.
And therefore, they're keeping him.
And look, we know from Duran's history, he plays well during contract years.
Let's hope that is the case.
