You don't want it.
You don't need it.
But you're going to get it anyway.
The Kevin Chean Show.
Here's Kevin.
A quick show today, which will include a 15-minute conversation
with Washington's starting center, Tyler Beattish.
And after Tyler, and he'll join me in the next segment.
Our guy, Eddie C, will preview and pick the third leg of the Triple Crown,
the Belmont Stakes.
The show's presenting sponsor is always Windo Nation.
86690 Nation.
Window Nation.com if you need new windows. I just finished watching Cocoa Gough beat Sabalanka in the
French Open final in Paris. Wow. Coco Gough, amazing. She lost the first set in a tiebreaker,
came back to win the final two sets. Her second major at 21 years old. Good for her. She becomes,
by the way, the first American to win in Paris since Serena did it in 2015.
This from Neil to open up the show, not Neil in Rockville, a different Neil.
Neil was writing to me about the conversation earlier in the week about the proposed ESPN trade involving Washington and Cincinnati that would have sent Tray Hendrickson to Washington for Johnny Newton a third and a seventh round pick.
Neil writes, Kevin, I am generally disinclined to trade cheap and young for aging and very expensive.
Given that the team covered is nearly bare of picks to start with,
the proposed Henderson-Newton trade is distinctly unappealing to me.
But I am writing to challenge politely.
One thing you have repeated several times since returning from having your plumbing work done.
He's referring to my little medical procedure a week and a half ago.
You have said that you would go all in on such a trade because the team is in the Daniels' rookie deal window.
Now is the time you have said to throw caution to the...
the win to grab a Super Bowl. Kevin, you are and have been Mr. All In all caps.
For time immemorial, need I remind you of the many turned out to be bums you would have traded
them picks for? The Daniels pick would have been Houston's if you had had your way in 2022.
Shall I continue? This is a long, long list. I get it. It's June and my timelines filled with softball
and lacrosse. Screaming trade, trade, trade is a time-honored ritual in your business. No big deal,
but your rationale doesn't hold water with people who have been eagerly following you for years.
Thank you, Neil. Good one. Good one, Neil. You know me, though. You know that I'm going to
defend myself if a defense is necessary. And a few things that you wrote and even implied need
defense. What doesn't need defense is you are a hundred percent.
correct. When it appeared that Deshawn Watson was available via trade, I was all in on
Deshawn Watson. And it would have been an unmitigated disaster. No doubt about that. But I'll also
just add that once it became clear that this was a man that had just a few issues with massage
therapists, I was completely out. I would have never done what Cleveland did after those reports
and accusations started flying.
I mean, the organization would have never been able to be the organization to make a move in the first place.
But I was completely off him once we learned that this was a bad guy.
I wanted our team in that moment, you know, before the accusations, before the reporting,
I wanted our team to consider trading for a guy who was in that moment a top six to eight quarterback in the league,
still a few years away from the prime of his career,
which those guys rarely, if ever, are actually made available.
And so, yeah, I was all in in that particular moment on Deshawn Watson.
And also, look, you didn't mention other quarterback specifically that I was all in on
that would not have turned out very well.
Russell Wilson, I was all in on Russ.
The team did make, if you recall, a substantial offer to see.
for Russell Wilson in the offseason of 2022.
That one would not have turned out well either.
But Neil, your overall theme of I'm a trade, trade, trade, swing, big, swing, big guy needs
some context here.
During the Snyder era, yeah, when this organization couldn't get it right, was never going
to get it right as long as he owned the team, I always felt like, you know, basically
there was only one way as long as he owned the team.
team to mask the dysfunction and give our team a chance to win.
And that was to somehow land an elite level quarterback.
That was the only way.
You know, they were never going to build it through the draft.
They were too dumb and too impatient and too many other things that were never
conducive to winning.
For years, I said there are two ways to get out of this, you know, suspension of reality
that we're in to have these conversations about the team.
there are only two ways for them to become relevant again.
Number one, Dan sells the team.
Number two, somehow, some way they find a quarterback that elevates everything around him
and masks all of the dysfunction.
So that was always at the center for why I wanted them to think big when it came to
quarterback during that era, because it was the only chance they had to, you know,
be a competitive, relevant franchise on the field.
Now, other positions, you know, I would dispute that I was trade, trade, trade, swing big, swing big.
It was always a case-by-case thing with other positions, and that's what it is now, too.
I was never, you know, a default trade big, swing big guy, except with respect to what you,
you know, brought up the quarterback during the Snyder era, no doubt.
it's always been on, you know, as it relates to other positions, much more case by case.
Now, as it relates to currently this moment and time, you're right.
I am much more inclined towards an all-in mentality.
And that, of course, is because they got it right last year at quarterback while he's on his rookie deal.
And not only did they get it right, we realized that they got it right quickly.
That was the rarest of cases that you draft a quarterback and you find out right away that you got it right.
Now you can start to try to take advantage of having the most expensive position on a rookie deal.
It doesn't mean, by the way, that I'd advocate for any deal.
I was not in favor of the first and third rounder to Cincinnati for Trey Hendrickson,
which was the reported price that Cincinnati was looking for before the draft.
I was against that.
I was definitely much more of a Miles Garrett enthusiast if he was actually made available.
And that would have been a hefty price.
But as it relates to Hendrickson, I was not all in on what the initial reports were
as it related to what Cincinnati was looking for.
But the trade proposed by ESPN the other day,
to me, that was a price very much worth paying for a player like Trey Hendricksson, a player that fills a crucial need and a need that has to be filled if you're going to typically win a Super Bowl quarterback and then somebody to chase down the opposing quarterback.
But, Neil, if you're going to say when it comes to my trade ideas that would have gone wrong,
saying that, quote, that list is long. I mean, list them. I mean, I'll help you. You know,
Watson, Wilson, I would have been all in on Aaron Rogers, too. Let's not forget that one.
I would have traded up for Justin Fields for the right price. I think that's the list. I mean,
let's not forget that Matt Stafford was the guy that I wanted more than any of those guys.
you didn't mention that that one would have turned out pretty well.
And the team made an offer for Stafford, for sure.
And I'm not sure that anybody was on board as early and as confidently as I was on their current quarterback, Jaden Daniels.
Now, you can say, well, that one was easy.
Not for our fans.
It wasn't.
I would say at least a third, you know, or 30 percent or so of our fan base wanted to trade back.
know, and build it out and then go to the quarterback store in two or three years and pick one.
You know, another third wanted Drake May or J.J. McCarthy or somebody else.
But, yeah, I mean, look, not that this is in the vein of your email, but I'll mention all the
quarterbacks I didn't want along the way that I didn't want to spend big or trade big for.
You know, I was very much against them drafting Dwayne Haskins, very much against that.
Now, once they did, I'm like, let's see.
You know, he's got some talent.
But, you know, I was the one that said,
this is not a guy that should go in the first round.
I'll never forget calling Cooley and saying,
you've got to watch Dwayne Haskins and tell me what you think
because everybody thinks he's a top 10 pick.
And Cooley immediately, you know, got back to me and said,
this guy's a day two pick, night two pick.
I thought the Carson Wrench trade was incompetence at the highest level.
I certainly didn't.
as some of you thought, think that Taylor Heineke and or Sam Howell were answers.
I actually think my biggest miss in the last several years, obviously the Watson thing would
have turned out to be a massive disaster. But I think that I was so dead set against Justin Herbert
as a possibility at number two in 2020. I was not a Justin Herbert fan at Oregon. I did not
think he was going to be a good quarterback. And clearly that's the pick they should have made
instead of Chase Young. I was a huge Chase Young fan. But, you know, I was wrong about him. And it's fair.
It's fair to say that there were some quarterbacks a few years back, Watson at the top of that
list that would have turned out to be really bad. And, you know, I thought about when you said
the 2024 pick would have been Houston's, I think you're right, because it would have been a
and a 23, and probably it would have been three first rounders.
I forget what Cleveland gave up actually now.
But you're more likely than not right on that,
that if they had made that trade for Watson,
before all of the allegations surfaced,
they would not have had the 2024 pick.
Anyway, thanks for that, Neil.
This from Stevie and Gaithersburg.
He writes, Kevin, I'm a hoops coach in the area
and just wanted to say that Tim Legler is your very best guest every time he comes on.
The smartest basketball talk I hear anywhere.
Thanks for having him on.
Yeah, he is so good.
Tim coaches and has coached for years and actually would have made a terrific coach.
He's been in broadcasting, obviously, for many years.
It is by far and away my favorite basketball conversation.
conversation. And, you know, it's, I'm fortunate that he, that he likes coming on. He was great
on yesterday's show talking about Oklahoma City and Indiana. I mean, so many things that, you know,
a lot of hoops people wouldn't even think about. He is super sharp and really good as a game
analyst man, too. He's really good. All right. Up next, you will hear my conversation with Washington's
Starting Center, Tyler Beattish, right after these words from a few of our sponsors.

in-home estimate. Tyler Biotis joins me right now. Tyler on Monday afternoon in Loudoun
County is teaming up with Mercy Chefs. Mercy Chefs is a Virginia-based disaster relief and humanitarian aid
organization. Tyler and Mercy Chefs will be giving out 500 backpacks filled with food to students
from Guilford Elementary School and Sterling Middle School. It'll happen from 3 to 4 p.m. Monday
at Sterling Middle School in Sterling, Virginia.
We'll get Tyler to talk about what he will be involved in on Monday in just a bit.
But, you know, I've had you on the show before,
and I was just thinking as I was waiting for you to call in,
when you do these, and I'm not talking, you know, the run-of-the-mill post-game
or, you know, the week of a game.
But in the off-season, when you get asked to do interviews,
what percentage of the questions are about Jaden?
Well, it all depends.
I mean, it really does depend.
I mean, depending on how and what you're asking.
No, but you know what I'm saying.
Like you're the center.
There's this, you know, understanding among football fans that there's a relationship
that's, you know, typically very close between center and quarterback.
And given the year that he had, I would bet you get asked a lot about him
because I'm about to ask about him.
But I was just curious as to how much, you know, ends up being about Jaden.
And what are the big differences with Jaden coming into year two?
Yeah, I mean, obviously, you know, Jaden, he sets a tone.
And, you know, obviously, you know, he's a leader by example,
but also his voice and how he sets the tone each and every day.
And you can see the improvements that he's put on, whether it be, you know,
get in the wait room, film session, you know, coming in early,
getting walked through done early before, you know,
a lot of people already in the building.
So, I mean, the biggest part for,
for him, I think, is just
his approach to it
and thank consistency and just finding those edges.
And that's part of the game, too,
is just finding, like, how exactly
can you get better, you know, each and every day
or whether it be 1% and just keep on
stacking days.
And he's making metastrives.
And, like, you know, we're always excited for him.
But also, like, you know, it just puts
more ownership on us. Obviously,
you're speaking to the center. So putting more pressure
on us in regards to making sure
we have a clean pocket so he doesn't
that to run around too much in regards of that. But, I mean, you know, he has a great approach to it
and a great attitude each and every day. So, you know, obviously blessed and super grateful to have him,
you know, doing leadership and everything, too. Is he different physically? Has he gotten
bigger and stronger? Because there was that, you know, photos circulating around the internet about
a week and a half ago. And everybody thought he looked like, you know, a little bit stronger at the
very least. What do you say?
I think he's definitely stronger.
I mean, for sure, obviously, physically and mentally.
I mean, just his approach to it.
You know, you can see it in his demeanor each and every day
and just the attitude of just attacking,
whether we're doing a walk-through, you know,
him doing his reads or whether we're in a practice,
you know, running through or whatever it is.
You know, he's going hard and, you know,
he's putting, like, max effort in each and everything he's doing.
So, like I said before, like you can't, you know,
Can't say enough great things about them.
Yeah.
So I wanted to talk to you about the differences between year one and year two in a new regime.
Last year, new coaching staff, new roster for all intents and purposes.
And the results were incredible, clearly, for a year one.
But I think many have a sense from the outside looking in that when you change as much as this organization did last year,
sometimes it takes time, even though it didn't appear to need much.
last year. But can you speak to the differences between, you know, last year and this year at this
time? Yeah, I mean, obviously, you know, year one to year two, there's a lot of different, you know,
modalities and the whole thing. I mean, obviously, like, year one, you're coming into the new
offense, you know, as a group, too, obviously, you know, coming with a new head owner, GM, head coach,
office coaches, everything. A lot of guys coming in a free to see, like myself. But going into
year two, it's also like, it's also really good, too, because we have like a lot of chemistry
coming forth and you have a lot of, you know, that same mentality of like scheme coming from the
year before. So there's a lot of, obviously, differences, but there's so much continuity and chemistry
and obviously the bonding throughout, you know, the last, you know, how many months we were together
with us last season, like, you know, eight to nine months. So, I mean, there's a lot of great
things, obviously coming up from year two. And you get to work on a lot of the improvements and
you work on your, you to maintain your strengths.
regards of the scheme or whether that's run, play action pass, pass pro, whatever it is.
That's obviously my position.
But yeah, definitely looking forward to the whole thing.
The reputation of this organization, Tyler, has changed so much over the last 12 to 14 months.
You know, you were in Dallas.
You understood what Washington was before you came here.
But now, like, there's this vibe, this culture vibe, that everybody thinks it is now one of the most
desirable places in the league to play.
What does that mean specifically when you're a player and you look at a place and you say,
yeah, I'd play there?
Yeah, I think it comes from the top down.
Obviously, our owner, Josh Harris and GMAP and Coach DQ, I mean, we've had a great
coaching staff to give us, obviously, the resources, but having a precise plan exactly
what they want out of us.
And, you know, like DQ said before, like, we're hunted, man, we go for it.
And the bottom line is, you know, what we put on film, you know, that's who we are.
So, you know, obviously a desirable place in regards of, you know, how we get after and how it gets down on the field.
So I think a lot of the film, you know, does the talking for that.
But in regards of, you know, how we, you know, set the tone and how we play the game, I think that speaks for itself.
What are your early impressions of Josh Connerly, Jr.?
I think he's really great. I think he's doing really good.
His approach is very, you know, he has a lot of talent,
and, you know, this spring it's great since he's been here.
He's made tremendous strides in regards to your run game and pass pro.
And this is awesome.
You know, we have our OTA practices and we have our minicam coming up.
But just, you know, obviously, a rookie coming in, just getting into the speed of the game.
Obviously, college and NFL is a little bit different in regards of that.
I know he hasn't been at OTAs, but do you have a sense of what Laramie Me Tonsle's going to bring to the offensive line?
Obviously what he's done, right?
I mean, you know, he has a great, you know, approach to it super professional in regards of how it takes care of his craft
and just what he's put on film.
I mean, his demeanor and his immediate presence in regards of run game and pass pro.
So I'm really excited about it.
So, Tyler, this time of year when we are still a few months away from games
and the draft is in the rear view along with most of free agency,
you get what I call list and ranking season,
where you have a lot of opinion pieces or analytics rankings, you know,
rankings of position groups or wide receiver duos or whatever it is.
And I'm just curious, do you pay attention to any of that, like where you would be ranked
in a given, you know, analytics ranking of the position?
You know, they're only 32 starting centers.
Do you pay attention to any of that stuff?
Not particularly.
I mean, you know, you always want to keep getting better each and everything.
but obviously, you know, you want to stay as much as media is a part of our sport.
You know, you want to stay outside of that.
Do you care or pay attention at all to things like PFF grades on, you know,
how you played in a particular game as an example?
I don't really have a comment on that.
You know what I'm talking about, pro football focus?
Sure.
Yeah.
So is your lack of commenting on it because you don't think that they know what they're doing
or is it because they're a big client of the NFL and I think all 32 teams and there'd be some sort of conflict of, you know, interest or something like that.
No, I mean, honestly, like, I just really don't know how that's all graded down.
You know, obviously, like, I don't think it's graded in regards of each and every team.
I don't know who really is grading it.
Right.
Do you?
I don't, you know what?
I think I know one of the guys that grades, you know, our team, you know, your team.
but I don't know how they do it either.
I don't.
I mean, you know, you have respect for, like, you know, some of that stuff.
It's more so, like, you know, how we're getting coached
and what the scheme in regards to that and, like, how it's all getting graded down.
But at the same time, like, you know, the success that we have in the scheme
and how we approach the game, it's internal.
Like, it's in the, it's in here, it's in our facility.
It's through the coaches and players.
sometimes it's not always about PFF and you know sometimes like you're told to do different things and like you know how are you supposed to like you know really look at that in regards of like you know how is it how is it good graded but like I don't really pay attention to too much of that stuff you know it's always been to me Tyler like baseball every single thing that happens in baseball is measurable in football with 22 players on the field at the same time when the great
doesn't even know what the player's responsibility on a given play is. It just makes it much more
difficult to grade. And I think your positions in particular, the offensive line, is very hard
to grade. That would be my view on it. I don't know if you have a comment on that.
Yeah, I'm with you on that one. I'm not really sure.
What did you think about this schedule?
We play who we play.
I know, but it got all the prime time games, the,
the attention paid on Washington.
You were used to it in Dallas with all the prime time games.
But I'm just curious if other than you play who you played, did anything else stand out?
Yeah, I mean, obviously I noticed like the prime time games.
You know, we're playing more like night games for sure.
But like it's like each and every other year in regards of like you're playing a different division outside of your own.
you know like we're playing the north this year but like in regards of like um the schedule i mean
obviously like you know primetime is always it's always fun to play on the lights for sure um
in that regard and um but no i mean obviously each and every year it's always a blessing to be
able to be healthy and to go out and play you know the game you love so um that's kind of why i say
you know we play who we play because it's always a you know you're super super grateful just
to have that opportunity each and every year all right one more and then we'll get to what you're
doing on Monday. I know it's early. I mean, it's June 6th. But is there a player that you have a gut feel,
and maybe you and other players out there have a gut feel is going to surprise people through the
rest of the summer and then into the season? Maybe a player that, you know, we fans aren't thinking
about? No, I mean, I'm honest. I mean, obviously we made some, you know, dishes, obviously,
in regards to my position for, like, oh, Off the line. But, no, I'm not.
I'm excited for like Josh.
I mean, you know, he's coming in hot.
You know, he's coming in, you know, full up for full head of steam.
So, I mean, you know, obviously super excited for him.
But also, like, you know, we had some position changes too with Brandon Coleman at left guard
and obviously bringing in LT, you know, and Larry Me at left tackle.
So, you know, I'm just really excited just to see how we gel, you know,
in regards to like, obviously you have OTA practices of many camp coming up right now.
And, you know, obviously when we put the pads on, you know, I think it's July,
going into camp.
Now, I'm just super excited about that opportunity
because obviously you're talking to an old lineman.
But in regards of like, you know,
our offense obviously getting additions,
you know, like Deboe and just having him
and his skill set on display
and, you know, getting guys back that were kind of banged up last year,
like Noah Brown and even getting guys like Michael Galp, too,
for additionals too.
All right, let's finish up with what you're going to be doing
Monday with Mercy Chefs. Tell us about it.
Yeah, we partner up with Mercy Chefs.
You know, obviously in regards of food insecurities, we're going to fill 500 backpacks
with Loudoun County students, sending them home with some food.
And I'm super excited and grateful to, you know, be a part of the community with my foundation.
And Mercy Sefts has been a great partner that I've used in the last, you know, two years.
So just really, really super excited to get out.
in the community and just, you know, spread that awareness.
Yeah, it's going to be great.
Again, Monday 3 to 4 p.m. Sterling Middle School in Sterling, Virginia.
It's Tyler and his foundation, along with Mercy Chef's, partnering to give out 500
backpacks filled with food to students in Loudoun County.
Thanks for doing this.
Wish you the best with what you'll be doing on Monday.
I really appreciate it, Kevin. Thank you.
Tyler Beiotish.
We'll finish up with a quick Belmont preview from our guy, Eddie C.

Washington right now at nine and a half, pretty much even money.
You're going to pay a little bit of juice if you bet the over.
But nine and a half is about the seventh best over-under-win total on the season.
There's some 11 and a halfs out there, 10 and a halfs out there, and then you got several nine and a halfs out there.
MyBooky.ag promo code Kevin, D.C. joining me right now, my guy Eddie C., a very popular figure in various parts of the area, various locales in South Florida.
And he is currently joining us from Saratoga, where the Belmont Stakes will be held later on.
today. Eddie C. comes on with us
before each of the three Triple
Crown races. I have not
been following this one
at all, Eddie. So let's
just start there. Tell everybody,
give everybody an overview
of the race this afternoon.
Well, Kevin, as always, thanks for
having me on.
You know,
it's an eight-horse field that's
happening for the Belmont, and the neat thing
about it is, it's a very quality
field. You've got the
Kentucky Derby winner
running in sovereignty.
You've got the Preakness winner in journalism
that's running, and you've got the third place
horse in the Derby by Azizah running.
So we got some really nice horses that are running in the race.
And at least I finally
gave you a winner instead of the second place in journalism
for the Preakness. So I feel a little bit better
about this.
Yeah, you love journalism in the Derby, too,
and it was, you know, it wasn't there, but you nailed.
It ran second.
You nailed the preakness.
So how does this race set up with the eight horses in it?
Well, I'll tell you, Bob Bafford has a horse.
It's the three horse called Rodriguez, and he may be the lone speed,
or he may escape and be the real speed horse.
So he's very dangerous if he gets to the front,
and that's the way Bafford likes to run his horses.
Get him out to the front and play catch me if you can.
but the weather is going to be a big factor right now it's raining and it could create a muddy track
and that's what we had in the in the derby where Sovereignty
obviously loved the muddy track and did well
So I personally, I like three horses and then there's a price horse that I kind of like
So if you want to get to it on let's get to it people
you're off a big win in the preteness.
So let's hear what you got.
Well, I still love journalism.
So he's my top choice.
I really do believe he's a special horse.
He's had a little bit of bad racing luck.
You know, he had a tough trip in the derby.
But, you know, he's won five or seven races, and he came second and third in the other two.
So he's obviously a very quality horse.
I do believe he's special.
If it is a muddy track, I don't.
don't think it's going to bother him.
Sovereign Tree is obviously a very good horse.
Just a, you know, journalism is the seven.
Savantree is the two horse.
So, and then the other horse, Biazza, which came third in the derby.
He's kind of the wise guy who are something on the backstretch, and everybody's
talking about him, and he's just a beautiful-looking animal.
But I'm going to go with journalism on top.
I'll probably
and I'll probably
gonna key him in a try
I don't know that I'll pay in it
play an exact
just because I don't know
that the exacto
will pay much
but what I will do
is I will play journalism
on top of the three horse
Rodriguez
and the eight horse
part of honor
that morning line
is 30 to one
and I'm just doing this
for you know
trying to hit a ticket
I don't want to hit
like you know
I don't want to hit a $10
exact
I'd like to hit a
$200
trifect
well who would
You know?
Right.
So I'm going to go with the price of journalism on top of Rodriguez, the three horse, and part of honor, which is the eight horse, and then play all, everybody else underneath them.
And if that hits, it should be a couple hundred-dollar tri-cut.
All right.
Real quickly, before I let you run, I know that Saratoga is a shorter track compared to, you know, Belmont Park.
and we're here, you know, running the Belmont at Saratoga this year.
How much shorter, and does that basically eliminate a horse that is a really strong closer?
It does make it a little bit tougher for closures because the Belmont is usually a mile and a half,
and the track at Belmont Park, which is on Long Island,
their big sweeping turns with a very long home stretch.
here at Saratoga, instead of running a mile and a half for the Belmont,
we're going to run a mile in a quarter.
So it's a little bit shorter of a race.
And yeah, it's going to, it could hinder a horse-like sovereignty,
who's a deep closer because the home stretch is a little bit shorter.
But because it's only an eight-horse field versus like a 20-horse field in the derby,
I think it's a pretty level playing field for all the horses.
But we're here at Saratoga because Belmont is being renovated.
We ran here for the Belmont last year.
We were running here today for the Belmont,
and then possibly even next year because, you know, how construction can go.
Right.
Nothing finishes on time.
All right.
Great job, as always.
At Notebook Picks on X on Twitter.
Thanks, Eddie.
Appreciate it.
Always a pleasure, Kevin.
Thank you.
All right.
That's it for a quick Saturday.
show back on Monday.
