Starting point is 00:00:02 You don't want it. You don't need it, but you're going to get it anyway. The Kevin Cheon Show. Here's Kevin. First and goal. Mahomes. It's there. Hardman, Jackpot, Kansas City.
Starting point is 00:00:19 Jim Nance on the call in Super Bowl 58 last February in Vegas. Mahomes to McColl Hardman in overtime to beat the 49ers 20. to 22. The last time we saw real football. But Tommy, we get real football again tonight and we get it at Arrowhead. We're every game at Arrowhead. Somehow we get no resistance from all of the people who wrote and preached about this city's team's name when 75 to 80,000 stand together and do the tomahawk chop and do war chance with Indian paint on their faces. But that's fine. And the name here was a big issue. Hey, how you doing, big boy?
Starting point is 00:01:12 You ready for some predictions? You got all your predictions ready? I gave you homework. I'm assuming you're very prepared. Wait a minute. I can't find them now. Does that ever bother you? I have written on a napkin.
Starting point is 00:01:28 Does that bother you seriously that there's never any pushback to Braves games, to Florida State games, to Kansas City Chiefs games, from the same people who were on their pulpits preaching about the name here? I don't get that. It doesn't bother me. I mean, I don't care. The name didn't bother you. But do you see the, do you see the hypocrisy is kind of the wrong word? It's a disconnect for, I don't know why the same people that fought the name here wouldn't fight just as hard publicly to get that eliminated from the sports scenes that we enjoy every weekend. You're right.
Starting point is 00:02:16 I mean, there could be a couple reasons. One, they're in Kansas City. They're not in the capital of the United States. Okay? The second is the name literally before spoke to the skin color of the people. you were talking about. Right. Okay.
Starting point is 00:02:34 Yeah. I mean, even though that wasn't the reason for the name, per se, but, I mean, actually speaking to the skin as opposed to a symbol, you know, so that may carry just a little bit more, that may generate a little bit more anger. And that's no speculation. I don't know, but it's not right. You're right about that. Yeah, I know the difference.
Starting point is 00:02:56 I mean, I know why the argument against the name, you know, dictionary, find insensitive, which by the way, it's hard to find a dictionary that actually uses the term racist. It's typically written in a dictionary definition as insensitive. I understand the difference, but it doesn't mean that the same outrage shouldn't apply over an openly, you know, kind of mocking situation of Native Americans. That would be my only point as it relates to that. Well, that's a valid point. Yeah. We're not going to do that today.
Starting point is 00:03:36 Hell, we have a franchise controversy to address. They fired the guy. We'll get to that. We'll get to that. I weighed in a little bit yesterday and spent a little bit more time kind of looking into it because the news kind of broke while I was doing the podcast yesterday. But I want to get your thoughts on the gentleman who was a VP of content in organization who they did fire. But look, the NFL season opens tonight. I do love this time of
Starting point is 00:04:09 year, and I am really excited about this particular game. Like, I can't wait to sit down and watch the game tonight. By the way, our podcast is presented, as always, by Wind Donation. Call them at 86690 Nation or head towindonation.com. Mention my name for a free in-home, no-obligation estimate. You actually have always taken an interest, a little bit of an interest in the Ravens, because one of your sons is a huge Ravens fan. And you actually lived for many, many years in kind of what became Ravens country, Howard County. Howard County, yes. Yeah. And for the factually, what was remarkable is, even though I was at the Washington Times, for the first of first 10 years or so, I was at the
Starting point is 00:04:58 time because I covered the Orioles and then wrote about them so often. I was more Baltimore-centric back then, than actually Washington-centric. Like, I went to the Ravens' first game after they moved from Cleveland at Memorial Stadium.
Starting point is 00:05:17 I went to their game at the new stadium when it opened. So, yeah, yeah, there is more of an interest. Plus, they're I've always interested in an organization that has had two general managers and three coaches over 28 years. It's amazing. I mean, what an organization, really.
Starting point is 00:05:40 And you're talking about two of the better organizations in the league. I mean, I think over a long period of time, the Ravens have actually been a better organization than the Chiefs. But the Chiefs drafted, they hired Andy Reid. They drafted Patrick Mahomes. and a team that had never won a Super Bowl is now won three, right? Three, including the last two. So, yeah, I mean, the Ravens, I'm looking, I mean, God, you pull up the Ravens Pro Football Reference franchise encyclopedia page, and, you know, they were, you know, they moved obviously
Starting point is 00:06:17 from Cleveland to Baltimore in 1996. And it just shows every year in the records. And then there's this column that shows. playoffs and it's just littered with playoff appearances and you go to ours and it's like there's just nothing but white screen which means that there's no playoff appearance for year after year after year. God, the Ravens, I mean, who knew when Cleveland moved to Baltimore that they would turn into what they've turned into? Two Super Bowl, you know, two Lombardi trophies and they had, what did they had. They had one Lombardi trophy in
Starting point is 00:06:55 Baltimore, the Super Bowl 5, because they lost Super Bowl 3. Right. They won other NFL championships. Right. With In their Super Bowl era. In their 28 seasons, they've been to the postseason 16
Starting point is 00:07:13 times. Wow. Yeah, pretty impressive. And yeah, the consistency... And that's the thing, too, the contrast on the other side of the street, because they literally are on the other side of the street. It's not like the Ravens are 500 miles from the commanders. They're 35, 40 miles away. Right. So you couldn't help but notice the contrast. Yeah. They're a good franchise. No, they're an excellent franchise. With that said,
Starting point is 00:07:45 you know, Jim Harbaugh has been the coach there since 2008, longer than any. John Harbaugh. John Harbaugh, excuse me, has been the coach there since. 2008. He replaced Brian Billick. Billick with, you know, Ray Lewis, et cetera, won the Super Bowl in 2000. By the way, I didn't, if you had asked me who the third coach was, meaning who the first coach was in Baltimore, I actually would not have guessed it. You know who it is. You know, yeah. The guy who used to coach for the Redskins, Ted Marsha Broda. Yeah, he was, he was George Allen's assistant during the Allen years. Ted Marcia Blas. Broda was the coach of the Ravens.
Starting point is 00:08:26 Marcha Broda coached the Colts, too. Yeah. He was, yes, he did. Yes, he did. Yeah. Coach the Indianapolis Colts and the Baltimore Colts before they moved to Indianapolis. But with all of that said, you know, glowing praise for one of the best organizations in the league, one of the best organizations in sports. There's a lot of pressure on the Ravens this year.
Starting point is 00:08:49 Oh, yeah. I think this is a year. I mean, John Harbaugh is probably going to be a Hall of Fame coach, Tommy. I mean, he's 160 and 99. He's got a career winning percentage of 61 percent, and he's 12 and 10 in the postseason with the Super Bowl. I mean, he's certainly in the conversation to be a Hall of Fame coach. Lamar Jackson's career has started off in a way in which, you know, he's a two-time MVP. He's going to go to the Hall of Fame one day.
Starting point is 00:09:25 I mean, I know he has only played six seasons, but he's won two MVPs. Now, if his career came to a close because of a serious injury or something now, it would be, I guess, debatable in the same way that I guess some people debated Gail Sairs's, you know, resume. Because Gail Sairs didn't win anything either during his very short, you know, career. But he's probably a couple of years away from being a lock Hall of Famer. And yet, because of his playoff performances and the team's playoff performances since he took over a quarterback, there's a lot of pressure for them to get to a Super Bowl. I don't think it's the AFC title game.
Starting point is 00:10:12 I think it's the Ravens need to get to a Super Bowl. What does that mean? Will Harbaal lose his job? Will they look for another quarterback? Probably not. But, you know, there's, they got to make this pay off. They went out and they got Derek Henry. They have, you know, they lost their defensive coordinator, Mike McDonald, who's out in Seattle.
Starting point is 00:10:35 But I feel like, you know, Philly, Dallas, and Baltimore are the three teams and maybe San Francisco as well. But Baltimore, because they got to get this monkey off the back of their quarterback who has not gotten it done in the postseason. And Harbaugh has, you know, this is his guy. He's been riding him. So we'll see what happens. I think they're good enough. It's a very anticipated opening game. It's not a defining opening game, obviously.
Starting point is 00:11:06 It's the first game of a 17-game season. But the Ravens pretty much laid an egg in the AFC title game last year against the Chiefs. And, you know, they need probably an... their own mind to get that taste out of their mouth, at least moving forward. Yeah, because the two franchises kind of side by side, there's a massive difference, and that is the Chiefs have won three Super Bowls in the last five years, and the Ravens haven't been to one since Joe Flacco quarterbacked them to the Super Bowl in 2012.
Starting point is 00:11:45 And yet, many people will say the Ravens were the best regular season team in the league last year. And they were. I mean, they were annihilating people last year. Towards the end of the season, if you recall, they beat the 49ers on Christmas night like a drum. They beat the dolphins in the next to last week of the season. I looked this up the other day because I remember they beat somebody badly. It was Miami, 56 to 17. I mean, they were killing people. They crushed Detroit. They beat Detroit by 32 points. They beat San Francisco by two touchdowns on the road. They beat Miami, who was in the playoffs, by, you know, 39 points. And they got to the postseason, and they did take care of Houston, which was a big, you know, there was some pressure in that game on Lamar Jackson. And then
Starting point is 00:12:39 they had Kansas City in Baltimore, you know, it wasn't, they were playing at home. Great weather day, great crowd, and for some reason, they decided to let Lamar try to beat Kansas City with his arm over and over again. The running backs in that game had eight carries, or six carries the running backs had, and Patrick Mahomes was lights out right when the game started, and it ended up being enough. I mean, one guy totally delivered, and the other guy really didn't. He didn't. You know what really hurt the Ravens last year? you know, this running back that they discovered, Keaton Mitchell. Yeah, he got hurt.
Starting point is 00:13:22 He turned out to be very good for them. Yep. You know? Yeah. A real explosive back. Yep. He got hurt and they didn't have that weapon. It's still, it doesn't excuse their play calling.
Starting point is 00:13:34 But they were clearly missing Keaton Mitchell. Well, Mitchell and Dobbins was, you know, hurt again. And they didn't have the backs. They were without Mark Andrews. for many of those games as well. But still, without those guys, they were crushing people in the regular season. I'm excited about tonight. I get pumped for this.
Starting point is 00:13:58 And we get a game tomorrow night. It's not like we have to wait until Sunday. We've got college games all day, Saturday, but we get the Packers and the Eagles tomorrow night. So that will all be good. Do you have a prediction for the game tonight? Because people love your predictions. Tonight?
Starting point is 00:14:16 I needed a prediction for tonight. That wasn't part of the homework. Let me just say there's no smell test pick on the game tonight. The action's pretty split. But I kind of like Baltimore to win the game. And you're right. There are 17 games. But because you can pretty much guarantee these two teams, as long as their quarterbacks don't get hurt, are going to be a part of playoff football. It could be a significant game when we get to the postseason in terms of seating. It could be. Ravens 35, Chief 34. That would be a hell of an opener.
Starting point is 00:14:54 Yeah, I like the Ravens 27 to 24. So we both have the Ravens winning. This from Joe L, who gave us five stars on Apple's review and wrote the following review. He wrote, I love this show, especially when it's not about the seas, and I'm assuming that means the commanders. The teacher stories Kevin and Tom told on the podcast last week
Starting point is 00:15:25 were the exact reasons I never miss a show. I love this podcast and Kevin and Tom's long relationship. That's very nice, Joe. I actually got feedback from several people on Twitter about that show last week, about you talking about the teacher. and the coach who you went up and, you know, spoke at the dedication for him up in East Straussburg last weekend. And I, you know, followed that up by talking about the math teacher
Starting point is 00:15:59 that I had had in high school who helped me at a time when she was going through, you know, the passing of her husband. Her husband had just passed away from leukemia, Mrs. Goldman. I'll never forget her and I'll never forget that time. But yes, and Tom's story is such a good one because ultimately he, for whatever reason, gave Tom the right book. Because once he gave him Hemingway, he had no idea what was in store for the rest of that young man, Tom Levero's life. Yeah, that book turned out to have a big impact on me and my life. and that was a great moment for me. I still don't think you should give up on the Hemingway lookalike.
Starting point is 00:16:48 I think you got to put in the time. Clearly you've got to put in a couple of years of being a contestant, and then they'll consider you seriously as a potential winner. It seems like the fixes in every year. It really does. It's a fun event, but it's a little bit crazy. I mean, it's, you know, it's in sloppy Joe's. it's filled with people.
Starting point is 00:17:13 You have to get there, to get a seat, you have to get there like three hours before the event happened, or else you're not going to have a seat. And it's July and Key West, Kevin. It's 95 degrees every day. Right. Well, you know what? I'm reconsidering.
Starting point is 00:17:31 You should not do that again. You're fine not doing that again. You got the one experience doing it. Yes, I did. And you told a great story, and yet for whatever reason, it's only recognized by Joelle, are the person who sent us the five-star rating and the review. Please rate us and review us, especially on Apple and Spotify.
Starting point is 00:17:54 It's big for us when you do that. If you haven't done it, it takes 60 seconds. And subscribe to the podcast and follow us on Apple and Spotify as well. So we can talk quickly about this story. of this guy, Rael and Teen. I talked about it on the podcast yesterday. For those that haven't followed this story, yesterday, there was a video released by the O'Keefe Media Group.
Starting point is 00:18:26 It was a secret video recording of Rial and Teen. Rial and Tine was the vice president of content for the Washington commanders. He had been that for the last four years. He was hired during the Snyder regime, probably by Jason Wright. I don't know that for fact, but it would have been by Jason or by Tanya or Dan. And he was secretly recorded at a restaurant on a second date after the date was arranged via a dating app. And he talked about the homophobic team that he works for in terms of of the players. Here were some of the quotes.
Starting point is 00:19:13 Quote, over 50% of our roster is white religious and God says, F, the Gays. Another big chunk is low-income African Americans that come from a community that is inherently very homophobic. He said that Roger Goodell and Jerry Jones, the quote, was, I don't think the commissioner of the NFL hates gay people, hates black people. Jerry Jones, who really runs the NFL. I think he hates gay people, black people. He called all of the social justice initiatives done by the league, essentially a reaction to the George Floyd. He said, quote, it's done because George Floyd changed the game. It's performative. It's not done out of the goodness of their heart. It's to make as much money as possible. The NFL cares about the bottom line like any corporation above all. all else. Close quote. He said, quote, they can faux-prioritize DEI for the sake of good publicity, close quote.
Starting point is 00:20:19 He called the fans, I'm assuming of the team, quote, most of the fans are high school educated alcoholics and mouth breathers. He also said players are dumb as hell. Some players are dumb as hell. And those who are smart don't stay that way after getting hit in the head to. many times. He also said those that get hit in the head a few times and are smart are more susceptible to conspiracy theories. And then he admitted that the scene at FedEx Field a few years ago where there were leaks in pipes and water sewage, it smelled like, to fans, was leaking onto fans.
Starting point is 00:21:03 He said that he was essentially told to tweet something out that it wasn't sewage. And he admitted in this private recording with this woman who he was on a date with for the second time, but she works for O'Keeffe Media, he said, quote, that is state-run media, close quote. The team initially suspended him yesterday. They were going to investigate the situation further. They fired him today. So there you go. It's over.
Starting point is 00:21:37 but I bet it isn't with you. So go ahead and say what you want to say. Well, I mean, I'm more repulsed by O'Keefe Media and the way this was done. I mean, come on. I mean, they took the guy on a date. You don't, I mean, media, that word, it means nothing anymore. When this guy is the, you know, this guy says they're part of a media group, okay?
Starting point is 00:22:08 responsible media do not go undercover like that with some obscure employee for a football team. I mean, how did this happen? Did the girl go on a date, and after she had the first date, she called these guys and said, hey, I can get something good for you? Did they set out to go after the commanders? What's this part of the thing? Hey, we're going to do a story on the commanders? Can you go set up a date with this guy?
Starting point is 00:22:40 I mean, it really, the process to me is far more sleazy and despicable than whatever he said. So O'Keeffe Media, for those that don't know, is run by this guy, James O'Keefe, who founded Project Veritas. It's a right-wing, you know, political activist organization. And the website basically incents people to what they, here's the quote, join the ranks of the O'Keefe Media Group's citizen journalist army, and you can become what they call an American swiper or an undercover journalist, and they sell recording equipment and offer classes on how to discreetly record these subjects. And let me just say that there were some stories out there yesterday
Starting point is 00:23:32 that O'Keefe Media and some of the projects that James O'Keefe, media, and some of the projects that James O'Keefe had been involved in before, that there were claims of deceptively edited video, which is probably the reason the team waited until this morning to fire the guy. Probably. They just wanted to make sure that this wasn't somehow put together with edits. I'm with you. It's like it's hardly journalism.
Starting point is 00:24:04 I can't imagine wanting to go out and ruin somebody's life by taking a class on how to discreetly record subjects. But Tommy, how dumb? I mean, I said on the podcast yesterday, how good was that first date? It must have been really good for this guy to feel as comfortable as he did in this second get-together with this woman. Because, you know, that is just, you know, and have you watched the video? I mean, this guy's a blowhard. You know? Yeah, he is.
Starting point is 00:24:37 He's a total blowhard and stupid for talking that way. He was an idiot. It's a got-to-go situation. I'll grant you that. Yeah. Okay? He was an idiot for putting that out there with somebody he met once. Did you hear the way, if you haven't seen the video, it's 10 minutes long.
Starting point is 00:25:01 And it's like, to me, I think I would have. picked up on the fact that this woman who I'm out on a date with for the second time is asking a lot of questions and they're just kind of odd how long she's kind of sticking with this subject and they're very specific. I don't know. Maybe I wouldn't have picked up on it. I'm sure he fed his ego. It fed his ego. You know, he's a big wake with a watch with an NFL no doubt. You know, he wants to strut his stuff. All she did was give him a chance to strut. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:25:37 And that's what he did. Now, for all... And he wound up paying for it. You know, but it's so sleazy the whole thing. I mean, just leave it in the... I just... I tell you what, what the better story is, is how it unfolded.
Starting point is 00:25:55 Did she... Was she a citizen journalist? I don't want to use those words. Was she somebody... She's American... American swiper. Yeah, was she a swiper? Before she went on the date with this guy,
Starting point is 00:26:11 or did this happen after her first date, and did she think she had an opportunity? How did it evolve? That's the better story. Why the commanders? You know, if you were going to go after a football team, I mean, that's, I mean, why not the Cowboys, you know? Why not somebody else?
Starting point is 00:26:29 Yeah, I mean, I bet there was, why would they target this guy unless there was something in his dating app profile that indicated, hey, this guy may be a live one. We may be able to get him to talk about an NFL franchise. But if it was just a true first date based off of a dating app, and then she said, this guy, my God, I mean, and I, you know, she's an O'Keefe media group person and she's, maybe she's done it before.
Starting point is 00:27:06 She's like, I think I could really get this guy to talk. I mean, he's sung like the all-time canary without any issue or any thought of it. And look, I get it. I mean, it's secretly video recorded, you know, and if all of us were secretly recorded every conversation we've ever had in our lives, I'm sure we would say some stupid stuff. But that was, you're trashing the company, the organization that you work for in a very provocative way. On a second date, man, I hope that first date went well for him. And then the other part of this is that just the team?
Starting point is 00:27:55 I mean, it just doesn't end. I mean, it's just unbelievable. This is a whole new regime. I'm trying to embrace benefit of the doubt. We're in a much better spot, which, by the way, this doesn't change my mind. But, you know, do you really give them a total free pass for having this guy employed for a year after Dan, Tanya, and Jason had any? Jason's been there. Maybe Jason convinced them to keep this guy. I don't know. But he's been employed there for a year. And he's clearly not smart enough to be a VP of content, considering you got suckered into that. I don't know. Maybe the environment or something was such where it made sense for him to do that. But you don't trash people like that. I mean, you got to be. You know, it's funny.
Starting point is 00:28:54 I wrote a column for tomorrow's paper, kind of in advance on the commander's season. And I used the line about flushing all the poison out of the, all the Snyder poison out of the franchise. And this is left over poison. Yeah. That they still haven't gotten out. Yeah. You know, this from Daniel, he writes, did he say anything that was untrue?
Starting point is 00:29:25 Well, that's a completely different subject altogether. Yes, it is. I mean, yes it is. But I don't think that every fan of the team is a high school graduate alcoholic and mouth breather. I don't think they are. Look, are there players in the league? John Parrott was a fan of the team. Who?
Starting point is 00:29:48 Mitchell Rails was a fan of the team. Yeah. Okay. Yeah. Okay. All right. Whatever. You know, the best news for them is that they fired him and there's a game on Sunday.
Starting point is 00:30:06 So you don't have to sit here and wallow in this. You know, I had a debate with somebody this morning and I won't mention who. he said that he thinks if the team hadn't, you know, put out the statement that they put out, that they were suspending this person and that they didn't agree with the language used and they would be investigating it, that it would not have become the story yesterday that it became. I disagreed with that. I think once that video was out there, it was going to be picked up and they were going to run with it. You had to respond.
Starting point is 00:30:39 I think the team handled it right. They didn't fire them right away because there is. is a history of suspicious taping by this organization. So you want to check it out and make sure that, you know, it was for real. And if you did do that and found it was, then you fired him. But no, you had to respond. Yeah, I'm just, the point being, if you didn't respond, would it have blown up into the big story that it blew up into? I say yes, it would have. Yes. And then the team would have been forced to respond. respond anyway.
Starting point is 00:31:15 Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, absolutely. All right. The team is practicing today as we are recording. Joe Witt Jr., Cliff Kingsbury, expected to do their coordinator
Starting point is 00:31:28 pressers. If I see anything out there with anything they said, we'll talk about that. Marcus Mariotta apparently was not at practice. He's still dealing with an injury. It's very possible that the backup on Sunday in Tampa will be Jeff Driscoll and Marcus Marietta might be inactive. We'll see. Sam Cosmey, by the way, yesterday in talking about his contract extension, had a quote about
Starting point is 00:31:59 why he wanted to stay and he's, you know, by the way, nobody even says Adam Peters or Dan Quinn. It's AP, DQ. I mean, we can just go with AP and DQ and everybody apparently now knows who we're talking about. They are initial guys. They have developed into that pretty quickly. I know that Quinn was always, everywhere he's been, he's been referred to as DQ. But Cosme said in terms of why he wanted to stay in Washington, he said he loves what AP and DQ are doing. He loves the money that Mr. Harris is investing into the team. And he just said, I feel like we have a lot of tools on the belt now and that people really care about this football team and this is a place that you want to be. And again, I think we got a special,
Starting point is 00:32:56 special dude that I got to protect and very talented. I mean, this was their first opportunity to extend somebody with a big contract since they took over as owners. This was expected. I expected this to happen, you know, before the season started. Something we've talked about. It was the right thing to do. The contract is a top three AAV contract. Just that, and I like Sam Cosmy a lot. Let me just say, I think I've had him on the radio show two or three times. I think I had him on the podcast at least once. There's something about him that's very likable. He's smart. He's engaging. He's got a good sense of humor, good personality, and he's clearly their kind of guy. But man, to hear somebody
Starting point is 00:33:43 say, I feel like we got all the tools on our belt and people really care about this football team and it's a place that you want to be. That's got to be music to the years of long-time fans because this was not a place that anybody wanted to stay in. Look, Montez Sweat has been very critical after leaving, but he didn't get to experience what Sam Cosmy is experiencing right now, and that's Adam Peters and Dan Quinn. And yet they haven't played a game. yet. So there is that. Yes, they have not. All right. No, that was that was a, that was a good signing. He's, he's probably the only sure thing on that offensive line right now in terms of expectations of performance. So, and he seems like
Starting point is 00:34:35 a good dude. All right, this is what we're going to do. We are going to come back in the next segment and we are going to give our Washington 2024 predictions and then in the final segment we will do our NFL predictions which will result in us giving our Super Bowl matchup and our Super Bowl winner. Starting point is 00:41:22 But I want a season prediction, a couple of thoughts, and then one big, bold prediction on the season. Go ahead. Okay. He's winging it. You know, you didn't expand the homework to include all this. Yes, I did. No, you did not. I did.
Starting point is 00:41:45 No, you did not. I did. Okay. No. We mentioned it. We talked about it at the end of Tuesday's podcast. I said, this is what I want for Thursday. Okay.
Starting point is 00:41:57 Right. Are you capable of doing this, or would you like me to go first and then you can copy my homework. Would you like to copy my homework? You want me to move my arm off my page so you can see which multiple choice answers I have? Yes. All right. Go ahead. I am sticking with what I have had a hunch about for a while now. Washington's going to go 10 and 7 in 2024 and they are going to be one of the NFC's wild card teams. That means they are going to be in the playoffs for the first time since, well, they were in the playoffs in 2020. But that means they will have their first winning record since 2016. They haven't had a winning record since
Starting point is 00:42:44 2016. All of the reasons that I've talked about. I'm a believer in Jaden Daniels. I'm a believer in this experience staff. I think the biggest mystery for me is Cliff Kingsbury and how he designs the offense and how he calls the offense. I can't wait to see what it looks like starting on Sunday. I promise you that you didn't get anything out of those preseason games that is really what, you know, related to the plan that they have. I think there's going to be a lot of interesting stuff in this offense. It's the biggest question mark because I'm very confident defensively that they're going to be a lot better. They're going to be a lot better coached. I'm excited for John Allen and Duran Payne.
Starting point is 00:43:30 I'm excited to see Johnny Newton when he's healthy. Mikey Sanry still for sure. Bobby Wagner's on our team. I mean, this guy's a walk first ballot Hall of Famer. One of the best to ever do it. And he's coming off a prolific year. He led the league in tackles. Frankie Louvoo's been a guy that if you've watched him the last year, you know, two years.
Starting point is 00:43:54 He is entering his prime and he's got a chance to be. be an excellent player. Jeremy Chin's always been good. It's just been a matter of whether or not they could keep them healthy. Yeah, I'm concerned about corner. Yeah, I'm interested to see what that offensive line will look like. I'm not so sure about wide receivers after Terry McLaren, but I think Zach Ertz is going to be a big part of their attack. And I think Brian Robinson, Jr. and Austin Echler are going to be massive parts of what Cliff Kingsbury wants to do. You know, this has nothing to do with their schedule, really, because most of you know what I think about schedules. It's really hard to predict what schedules really will be. I would say that the start to
Starting point is 00:44:38 the season, which includes a Todd Bowles coach defense in the opener, a giant defense that is talented, a Cincinnati defense that's well-coached, and then Cleveland and Baltimore in weeks five and six, two of the best defensive teams in the NFL, that they're going to get tested. You know, if those teams are healthy and they look like what they looked like last year defensively, they're going to get tested big time. Jaden Daniels is going to face quite the gauntlet here over the first six weeks of the season. By the way, after Baltimore, Carolina's defense is pretty decent and has some talent on it. I just, you know, kicker special teams. Yeah, there are, question marks. I don't think their roster is a top half of the league roster. I don't. But I think
Starting point is 00:45:28 everything in combination has, it's markedly improved. The coaching's a big part of that. And for me, it comes down to, I'm a believer in Jaden Daniels. Now, to be a believer in 10 and 7, I've got to be a believer in Jaden Daniels right out of the gate. I am, but I understand what rookie quarterbacks typically are. Even the ones that end up being great. They don't usually do it in their first year. CJ Stroud is an outlier. Last year's Houston Texans are an aberration. 10 and 7 and a wild card birth.
Starting point is 00:46:08 And my bold prediction for the season is that Brian Robinson, Jr. has 1,200-plus yards rushing, has 50-plus catches for 450 plus yards and makes a Pro Bowl this year. I think number eight is a big part of Cliff Kingsbury's plan this year. They're going to have a quarterback that'll be dual threat at times. That'll open it up for Brian Robinson Jr. He proved last year that he can catch the football. I think both backs are going to have big seasons, but my bold prediction is that Brian Robinson Jr. ends up being one of the top three rushers in the NFL and goes to his first Pro Bowl in 2024. All right, Tommy.
Starting point is 00:46:59 Go ahead. Hopefully I gave you, I know you won't have as much information after your prediction, but do your best. Try hard for the podcast's sake. Well, actually, I'm going to streamline the information and take the fluff out and just leave in the importance. stuff. Okay. Do that. Okay. Yeah. That'll be
Starting point is 00:47:24 a change of pace, okay? It'll be more like your comments. Easily digestible. Go ahead. Yes. Okay. My prediction for a record this year, I'm going to start out right away, is 6 and 11. I think they'll be a little
Starting point is 00:47:40 bit better, but not much better. I think the odds makers are right. They'll be right around 6 and a half, the over under. I think they're a roster. Typically, when you have this kind of roster turnover and this kind of coaching turnover, it takes time to gel, and it usually takes at least a season. So I think all the uncertainty of all the parts working together for the first time is going to be a problem for them.
Starting point is 00:48:13 I think the offensive line minus Sam Cosme is still a big question mark. I think it's, I think they really made a big mistake by not investing more in their offensive line or their wide receiving core, which I think is another big question mark. And I think their young quarterback needs better tools at both. It's going to need better protection, Jane Daniels, and it's going to need better weapons. I pointed out before that at LSU last year, when he won the Heisman trophy, they had among the best offensive lines in football. And they had two wide receivers that wound up getting drafted in the first round in the NFL.
Starting point is 00:48:57 There was a lot that was built for him to succeed. Now he has to be a big catalyst in the success. It's almost like switched around from what he was doing at LSU. I think that's going to be hard for him. and my bold prediction is Jane Daniels only starts 12 games this year. Oh, my God. Didn't you do that last year with Hal? That was Carson Went.
Starting point is 00:49:29 Oh, that was Carson Wentz. You were right about it. You got that one right. Yeah. Yeah. You were. So I guess you're predicting injury for Jaden Daniels. Massive injury?
Starting point is 00:49:44 I just think he'll get. beaten up. And it'll take its toll. Look, I don't want to predict injury. I just think he'll he'll take a beating. Well, that wasn't as fluffy as you suggested it would be.
Starting point is 00:50:00 There was a lot there. Six and 11. Jaden Daniels only starts 12 games. You laid it out very nicely. The one thing that I would just come back at you with is that they did
Starting point is 00:50:15 sign two offensive linemen in free agency. They drafted one in the third round and all three of those players are likely going to be starting on their offensive line and they just traded for or they just signed a wide receiver. They drafted
Starting point is 00:50:31 a wide receiver and they signed two others in free agency. Now, no big stars. That's true. And I think that's part of, you know, this first year of trying to find the right kind of mix of players and keeping that, you know,
Starting point is 00:50:49 salary cap availability for next year and the year after, you know, in terms of the space that they have large. But yeah, good job. That was well done. Well, done. You wanted before we get to maybe you're not so fluffy NFL predictions, you wanted to just tell a quick story about your Georgetown class that you teach on Thursday nights. Yeah, I had my first class.
Starting point is 00:51:15 class last week of the semester. Right. And it was a really good class, a really good group of students. And I'm kind of energized again about teaching the class. Now, one of the things we have to do is we have to nail down when you're going to come speak to the class about podcasting and sports talk radio. Right. You are going to do that at some point.
Starting point is 00:51:38 I'll do whatever you want me to do. Okay. Okay. Okay. Because my co-instructor said, is Kevin Krook. going to be able to come again this year. So you're in demand. Okay. I doubt that's true, but of course, whatever you need from me, I will be there for you. I'm always there when I need you. When I need you. I know. That was a joke. Okay. Yeah, of course, whatever you need.
Starting point is 00:52:05 What happened was everybody introduced themselves and one of the questions, including us to the class, and one of the questions was, what was the first sporting event you ever went to? And when I introduced myself and had to answer that, I started out, I recognized in my mind, well, Ebbets Field and the Brooklyn Dodgers was the first sporting event I ever went to. So I was about ready to say that
Starting point is 00:52:35 with my usual, how impressive is this? You know, I saw a game at Ebbets Field like when I tell people this who know baseball, but all of a sudden that occurred me, maybe I should ask this question first. So I asked the class, how many people here have ever heard of Evans Field? Cricket.
Starting point is 00:52:57 Was there one? No, not even one. Right. So I said, so this isn't going to mean anything to you. Yeah. And then, you know, we're doing a little bit of bio-information,
Starting point is 00:53:09 and I mentioned, and I was in an episode of the, wire, and I'm looking at their eyes, and they're drawing a blank, and it's a class of 17. And I said, how many people in here have ever seen the wire? Two people. Really? That's it? I would have thought it would have been more than that.
Starting point is 00:53:27 But the wire was 20 years ago, Kevin. Yeah. You know? So those were two kind of unnerving moments for me, particularly the wire one, that only two out of 17 of these, and they're not freshmen. This is a graduate school program, okay? So they're in their 20s. Right.
Starting point is 00:53:52 But that's how quickly things move in that the wire is forgotten by a new generation. That's interesting. The other day, just real quickly, Rolling Stone put out the top 100 television episodes of all time episodes. We can maybe get into this next week on a Tuesday or a Thursday. That would be good. But number one on the list
Starting point is 00:54:21 was the Breaking Bad episode where they killed Hank out in the desert. That's a good one. Oh my God. That is such an intense episode. You know, when Walt comes back and Skyler is there,
Starting point is 00:54:40 and Finn is there, and she ends up cutting him with the knife and saying, get out. And, you know, he takes the baby. And that is, I mean, that is an unbelievable episode. That was the number one television episode of all time. There were several. I can easily, and I'm sure this is in the top 100, I can easily give you the most, the greatest TV episode I ever saw. What?
Starting point is 00:55:10 homicide life on the street Vincent DiNafrio was in the episode and it's based on a true story it's based on the story of the guy at the New York subway stop it's number 25 is it I figured okay
Starting point is 00:55:26 he fell off the platform and got stuck in between the platform and a train and his he was twisted and the minute the train would have to move, he would be dead.
Starting point is 00:55:43 So the whole episode is Andre Brahr, who played Frank Pembleton, one of the detectives, is talking to him while he's sitting there in this position. That is so dramatic and based on a true story. Well, we can do more on this when we have time. But let's get to our NFL predictions. We'll get to a Super Bowl matchup and a Super Bowl winner right after these words from a few of our sponsors. Hey guys, I want to welcome a new sponsor. That sponsor is Navage. Navage makes a nasal care product that works.
Starting point is 00:56:19 How do I know that? I've been using it since they sent it to me. Now, I am someone who has allergies, and because I have these allergies, I get congested a lot. The congestion sometimes leads to snoring and issues with sleeping. But Navaj nasal care makes breathing easy, easier. It's a game changer. My wife and I both used it. It works. Now, what is it exactly? Well, Navaj uses smooth saline flow and gentle patented nasal suction to clear your nasal passages. You just hold up this Navaj nasal cleaner to your nose and press the start button. And what it does, it runs water through one of your nasal passages and out of your other nasal passage, flushing congestion and mucus from your nose. It works fast, takes about 30 seconds. It's drug-free.
Starting point is 00:57:17 It uses 99.9% pure saline salt pods with no medicinal side effects. You're going to notice a difference. It is very soothing and relaxing to use as well. I want to help you get relief from your congestion. My listeners can order a convenient, Navaj starter pack, including a nose cleaner with batteries included, and 30 original salt pods, everything you need to get started. Plus, get a cleaning kit as a free gift with your order, but only by going to my exclusive
Starting point is 00:57:56 URL. It's navage.com slash sheen, and then you use my promo code, Sheen. Again, to order your Navage free cleaning kit, and for full product, details, go to Navaj. It's spelled N-A-V-A-E-E-D-com slash Sheean. That's promo code Sheean at navage.com slash Sheen.
Starting point is 00:58:29 Tommy, I bet you Shelly's will be packed tonight for the game. Oh, absolutely. Shelly's will be packed and that kitchen will be busy. That kitchen at Shelly's backroom at 1331 F-Treet will be busy. because I know the word is out, but I've been spreaded the word about what a great menu they have. And the special for this week is really goes deep inside my heart here. It's the Italian burger, okay? You know, again, it starts with that half pound of their custom blend beef.
Starting point is 00:59:04 You know, the Angus Ground Chuck, the beef short ribs, and the beef brisket, especially made for shelley's. but they have mariner sauce, provolone cheese, and pepperoni. Okay, that is the kind of meal that you want to eat when you're watching football for the first time, or when you're watching football for the last time, or whether you're just sitting at home with nothing to do. That's the kind of meal you want to eat, an Italian burger, but you'll get one of the best at Shelley's Backroom.
Starting point is 00:59:34 You can find out more about their menu by going to shelley's backroom.com. their food menu, they have their drink menu online, and they have their cigar menu online. We're the first-class website. Find out more at shelley's backroom.com. All right. This is what we're going to do, and I'll go first because Tommy has to, you know, follow along and figure out how to do this because he hasn't put a lot of thought into it. But we're going to pick.
Starting point is 01:00:03 Let's face it, I'm limited, okay? You're not limited. You're just... No, I am. I'm limited. You're not limited. You are just interested in the things that you're interested in. And this isn't.
Starting point is 01:00:14 It's like you in school. Like, if I were a teacher, I'd say, all right, you don't have to do this. Let me, can I interest you in a Van Gogh painting? Or no, that wouldn't interest you. Can I interest you in, if I send this VHS tape home with you, it's the first episode of the Sopranos. I think you're going to like it. All right. So here we go. We'll start in the AFC. We're going to give our division winners, the three wild card teams. We'll pick the championship game matchup and the team that advances to the Super Bowl. And the AFC, I really like the Jets in the AFC East. This is obviously contingent on Aaron Rogers being healthy. If he is, their roster is the best roster in the AFC. It's probably the second or third best roster in the league.
Starting point is 01:01:07 but he's got to remain upright and he's got to play like Aaron Rogers. I think he will if he is healthy. I like the Jets to win the AFC East. I like the Ravens to once again win the AFC North in what might be top to bottom, the best division in football. I think pretty much every single team in that division has been picked to make the playoffs by somebody. Cincinnati is the other kind of favorite. pick to win the division, but I'm going with the Ravens. I think this is a big year for the
Starting point is 01:01:41 Ravens, as we talked about, and they were incredible in the regular season last year. It'll come down to the playoffs for them, but I think they'll be a very good regular season team. I like the Chiefs in the AFC West, and I like the Texans in the AFC South. So I just gave you one new division winner and three repeats, the Jets being the new division. winner. The three wild cards are the Bills, the Bengals, and Jacksonville. So the AFC, like if you go through the AFC divisions, it's really hard to come up with a super surprising team like Houston was last year, unless you're going to go way out on a limb and say New England is going to be in the postseason. I don't think anybody thinks New England's going to be in the postseason. Then again,
Starting point is 01:02:37 Again, nobody thought Houston would be last year. You know, Tennessee would be a long-shot pick. The Raiders probably the same, Denver the same. But the AFC is stacked, man. It is going to be, there are teams that I left out. I left out Cleveland. I left out Pittsburgh. I left out Miami from the postseason.
Starting point is 01:02:58 There are going to be some teams that get left out of the AFC postseason because it's pretty loaded going in. I've got the Jets ultimately with the number one seed overall, and I've got the Chiefs beating the Jets in the Meadowlands in the AFC Championship game to head back to the Super Bowl with a chance to become the first team ever to do it three years in a row. So Jets, Ravens, Chiefs, Texans, Bills, Bengals, Jets is the wild card with the Chiefs beating the Jets in the Mettles.
Starting point is 01:03:35 lands because the Jets are going to be the one seed in the AFC title game. All right, Tommy, go ahead. Well, I've got one, it's similar to yours, but a little bit different. I have the Chiefs win in the AFC West, with a 13 and 4 record. Okay. The Ravens win in the AFC North, going 11 and 6. The Texans win in the AFC South going 10 and 7. and I have the dolphins when the AFC East.
Starting point is 01:04:09 Okay. With a 12-and-5 record. I think that Aaron Rogers is going to be more of a problem than a solution for the Jets, and I think they're just going to fall apart internally at some point this season. I like the dolphins a lot and their weapons and their quarterback. The Wild Cards, the Jets will still have enough talent to make a wild card. the Jets, the Colts, and the Browns are my three wildcard team. Good one on the Colts.
Starting point is 01:04:40 That would be a surprise pick. I actually think the Colts are pretty good this year. I do. I have them and gave them out as a prop bet over eight and a half for the season. All right. So what's your AFC championship game matchup? The Dolphins versus the Chiefs. And who wins?
Starting point is 01:05:00 The AFC title game. The Dolphins. Wow. They go to the Super Bowl this year. Miami Dolphins. Yeah. Let me just say, based on the records you gave, the dolphins would have to beat the Chiefs at Arrowhead.
Starting point is 01:05:18 And last year, we saw what happened in the cold and the bitter cold weather. They basically ground to a halt. They were too cold, and they wanted to get back to South Florida as quickly as possible. So you better hope for good weather if the dolphins have to go to air. Arrowhead in the AFC title game. Good point. All right. So Tommy's got the dolphins in the Super Bowl from the AFC. I've got the Chiefs in the Super Bowl. Our NFC predictions, Tommy, are brought to you by Wind Donation. I bet you didn't know that today. Wind donation has a September sale, which is buy to get two free,
Starting point is 01:05:55 no money down, no payments, and no interest for two full years. All I ask is if you're thinking about new windows, just give them a call and let them come out and give you an estimate. 86690 Nation, windownation.com. They're in and out of your house in an hour or less. You'll get an estimate. They won't pressure you. You can shop it. You're not going to work with a better company. You're not going to get a better product. You'll get the absolute and the latest technology, the most efficient windows out there. You'll save up to 40% on your energy bills. All right, in the NFC, I think the 49ers win the NFC West, and I think they're the number one seed in the NFC playoffs. This is a closing window for the 49ers. Yeah, they got Trent Williams signed. They got
Starting point is 01:06:48 Brandon Ayuk signed. That means Debo Samuels probably the odd man out next year when they have to pay a quarterback in Brock Purdy. They've been living off this rookie quarterback deal and the performance of Brock Purdy for a couple of years. I think there's pressure on them to get it done. And I think they're going to have a good chance to get it done. I like the 49ers to win the NFC West and be the number one seat overall. I think the 49ers will win 13 plus games. I really like the Eagles this year. Now, the Nick Siriani, Jalen Hertz thing is definitely a wild card in all of this. You know, we're learning here over the summer, and I don't think everybody knew this, that Nick Siriani and Jalen Hertz were at odds last year. There was dissension because of it.
Starting point is 01:07:37 They tanked at the end of the year. They got blown out in a playoff game. They kept Siriani anyway. They brought in a new offensive coordinator in Kellyn Moore. They brought in an outstanding defensive mind in Vic Fangio. They added speed defensively, which they really lacked last year in their secondary. and they added Saquan Barkley. I mean,
Starting point is 01:07:59 you know, they just have so much. The biggest loss is Jason Kelsey. Jason Kelsey is a Hall of Fame center. So watch tomorrow night, see what that Eagle's offensive line looks like without Jason Kelsey. Cam Juergens is the center. I wonder if they'll
Starting point is 01:08:15 run as much tush push this year as they have done because a lot of the defensive guys in the NFL said, yeah, Jalen, from You know, the waist down is super strong, but it was always about Kelsey and how great Kelsey was. I just like the Eagles. This could completely fall apart.
Starting point is 01:08:36 Nick Siriani could get fired if things don't go well. You know, you look at Philadelphia's schedule. After Green Bay, it actually really eases up for a few weeks. They have the Falcons, although the Falcons should be improved. They got the Saints, the Bucks, the Browns, the Giants. So I think Siriani needs a quick start. and winning tomorrow night would be huge. I just like their roster and I like what they did with the coordinator.
Starting point is 01:09:02 So I got Philadelphia as the two-seed winning the NFC East. I like the Packers to win the NFC North. In a close, hard-fought division battle with the Lions, they may tie with the best record like at 11 and 6, but I got the Packers coming out as the division champion after the tiebreakers. and although I'm a little bit concerned about Kirk in Atlanta early in the season coming off that injury, I think the Falcons have the most talent and the best quarterback situation in the NFC South. So I've got them winning the NFC South.
Starting point is 01:09:40 The three wild cards are the Lions, the Cowboys, and Washington in as the seven seed. The way I have it, Washington would face Philadelphia on White. wild card weekend on the road in the playoffs. Emerging from that, I've got the 49ers, I've got chalk, because the Eagles would be my two seed, I've got the 49ers over the Eagles in the NFC title game, which means I have a rematch of last year's Super Bowl, the 49ers, and the Chiefs. I'll tell you who I have winning that game in a moment. But Tommy, give me your NFC division winners and three wildcards.
Starting point is 01:10:27 My NFC division winners are the 49ers in the West with a 13 and 4 record. The Lions 11 and 6 went in the NFC North. Tampa Bay went in the NFC South and the Cowboys when in the NFC East with a 12 and 5 record. I think this is the year for the Cowboys. Okay. I think the same sense of urgency that you talk about with the 4th. 29ers is there for Dallas. Now, I know their dysfunction usually gets in the way,
Starting point is 01:10:59 but I think that this is one year they'll be able to get past that. Between wild cards are the Rams, the Packers, and the Eagles. I don't have a lot of faith in the Falcons with a rookie head coach, Rahim Morris, this year. So I don't have the Falcons in a playoffs at all. Okay. you've got basically, I think, every single team that was in the postseason last year in the NFC back in the postseason. The 49ers, Lions, Tampa, Dallas, Rams, Packers, Eagles. Yeah, you have the exact same seven teams that were in the postseason last year back in the playoffs this year.
Starting point is 01:11:39 What's your NFC championship matchup? 49ers versus Cowboys. And you've got the 49ers winning that game or the Cowboys? Bowboys winning that game. 49ers winning that game. 49ers versus Miami and the Super Bowl. San Francisco, Miami, and I have San Francisco, Kansas City. I've got San Francisco winning the Super Bowl this year over the Chiefs.
Starting point is 01:12:05 So do I. I have the 49ers winning it as well. So you've got the 49ers winning the Super Bowl over the dolphins. Okay. There we go. That wasn't so hard, was it? No, it wasn't. It wasn't much fun, though, either. Because it's so meaningless.
Starting point is 01:12:28 I know. If you're listening to this podcast, you know exactly how this will all turn out as much as I do. I know. It's true. It's almost like the March Madness bracket. Anybody can fill it out and have just as good of a chance. I don't know. I think there are a few. a few teams this year that if they stay healthy, it's hard to think that the 49ers wouldn't be playing in the postseason, that the Ravens and the Chiefs wouldn't be playing in the postseason. You know, if they remain healthy, healthy, you know, the health thing is always a big part of it.
Starting point is 01:13:06 I think it's, it'd be, I'd be hard pressed to think that the Lions wouldn't be a part of the postseason if they're healthy. I mean, I went Packers in that division because the Packers, you know, they drilled Detroit. Thanksgiving Day last year, and they almost knocked off the 49ers before Detroit, almost knocked off the 49ers in the postseason. I like what the Packers are doing. I think Matt Lafleur is really underrated. Maybe he's not underrated. I think people realize how good he is. I think he's underrated. Yeah. All right.
