Starting point is 00:00:02 You don't want it. You don't need it. But you're going to get it anyway. The Kevin Sheehan Show. He is Kevin. Tommy's back with me today. The show's presenting sponsors, always, Window Nation, 86690 Nation,
Starting point is 00:00:17 windonation.com. You need new windows. I just finished reading your column. It's a good one. The conversation today will be mostly about our football team. I'm telling you, Tommy, before we started to record this show, I opened up the email. And the number of emails we have had since Sunday's debacle in Dallas,
Starting point is 00:00:46 I picked out some good ones. I think I've got some good ones for everybody today. But man, there's something about an ugly loss, I guess especially when it's against the Cowboys, that really still does raise the level of passion. Oh, yeah. And make people forget
Starting point is 00:01:10 that last year, we almost went to the Super Bowl. Yes. Yes, it does. It shows, and this I point out in my call today, in Washington Times, like it shows the gap not only on the roster between a good NFL team and what they were,
Starting point is 00:01:32 but also shows the gap between the damaged fan base and a normal fan base. I mean, you know, failure resurrected all the fury and particularly failure against the Cowboys.
Starting point is 00:01:48 Yeah. There are a couple of emails that I picked out just to sort of, I think everybody understands if you're part of this fan base, which most of you are, that this is, you know, a season that seven weeks into it is not what we expected,
Starting point is 00:02:07 and it also feels like it's at a tipping point, and the tipping point being going in the wrong direction, or continuing in the wrong direction. But I wanted to read a couple of these. This from Cole, subject heading, I can't do this anymore. Kevin, after another loss like this, especially with the JD-5 injury,
Starting point is 00:02:30 I seriously don't think I can be a fan of this team anymore. This team gives you hope just to rip it away the following season. I'm 27 years old and have watched and played football since I was seven years old. I love the sport as a whole, but this team is extremely frustrating. I know we're down players, but something, anything, has to happen on defense. It's pointless to watch when you know what's going to happen every week. our offense is going to play at least good enough to get the win with the guys that we're missing, and the defense isn't going to stop a soul.
Starting point is 00:03:06 It's just pointless, and I don't think I can do it anymore. Anyways, love the show and this team, but maybe not for long. I read this, and I thought, are you serious? Did you forget last year? I mean, it was last year, right? It wasn't 1991. It was last year that they got to the NFC championship game. There was a lot of that out there this weekend, Kevin.
Starting point is 00:03:37 A lot of that. I know. On social media, I saw people that not only wanted to fire the head, I not only wanted to fire Joe Witt Jr., defensive coordinator, but wanted Quinn fired too. Well, Adam Peters is taking a lot of the brunt too. for the roster. I mean, I want to remind everybody how long Adam Peters has been here.
Starting point is 00:04:03 20 months, 20, not even two years yet. He inherited a roster in which the cupboard was bare, bear, and you want it fixed in 20 months? And by the way, not only are you ripping Adam Peters for not having it fixed in an unreasonable amount of time, You're like ignoring the fact that in the first year, they won 14 games and got to the NFC championship game. And you're ready to move on from Peters and Quinn? It's almost as if there's some fans that would have preferred a slow build, you know, to not to temper their expectations and soften their disappointments. you know, maybe last year, six wins. You know, maybe this year eight or nine wins.
Starting point is 00:05:03 You know, which is the typical, I mean, a lot of times the typical progression that you see in the NFL. And it's almost as if there's fans out there that would say, you know, it just came too quick. It came too quickly. I want to give back last year. I want to pretend that last year didn't happen. And so I can get myself into the frame of mind. Like, okay, this is a rebuild going on. Let me just explain something to everybody.
Starting point is 00:05:31 There really aren't rebuilds in sports anymore, not even in the NFL. The NFL in particular is such a week-to-week kind of situation. And you have a chance in an off-season. Look at Indianapolis this year. Do you think their fans want the slow build, the Shane Stuyken year number two? Well, we're not supposed to be six and one on our way to seven and one. I'd much rather be, at this point, I'd much rather be three and four or four and three,
Starting point is 00:06:05 but looking like we're building in the right direction. What are you talking about? Just, I don't understand this. Every year, you've got teams that, every year you can turn your team around. And they did it in their first year. Now, they did it because they were at number two in the draft, and the other team took one guy, and the other guy was left for us. And like you've said, he was the son.
Starting point is 00:06:36 I love your line, by the way. I love your line in your column. Where is it? Oh, here it is. It turns out he, as in Jaden Daniels, has limits. The sun by which all commanders' planets revolve, around has been dimmed by a damaged solar system. Yeah. Yeah, the solar system, the, I think we only have eight planets now. We used to have nine. I think we only have eight, right? No, I think I think
Starting point is 00:07:06 Uranus is back in the mix. Well, Uranus was never out of the mix. Pluto was the one that was out of the mix, I thought. Well, I think they're back to nine. Are they back to nine? There may even be more. Really? Yes. List of planets. Let's see how many planets there are. on Wikipedia. Wikipedia lists the planets. Eight. There are eight planets within the solar system right now. I bet you, Neil and Ross Tyson would deferred. I disagree with that. Okay. Well, there's a lot that he disagree with, I'm sure. Um, planets outside the solar system are also known now as exoplanets. So there you go. Well, that's what we got a lot of now, exoplanets. Do you want to know what the eight planets are? Yeah, Pluto,
Starting point is 00:07:53 was the one that that was... Mercury. Yes. Yes. Earth. Yes. Mars. Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus.
Starting point is 00:08:01 And one more. Now the furthest away from the sun isn't Pluto anymore because Pluto's not a planet. It is Neptune, Tommy. Neptune. So anyway,
Starting point is 00:08:20 yeah, it's a damaged solar system right now. And by the way, you know, the old solar system, Pluto's gone. Pluto's done for the year. We're down to eight. Pluto's on IR. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:08:35 All right. Let me read a couple more of these that we got. This one from Dan. Dan writes, Kevin, I can't believe I'm actually saying this. And I have a feeling you may roast me for this one. But I think Washington should seriously consider resting many of their starters for the Monday night game against the Chiefs. By resting Jaden, Terry Debo to get healthy and players who have struggled like Connerly,
Starting point is 00:09:03 Jr. Latimore, Kwan Martin, and old heads like Wagner and Ertz, I think it would be a good reset before the stretch run and would get some younger guys like McGee and Sinnott some playing time. I know every game's important in the NFL, but we need to be healthy for the final nine games with seven of them being against NFC teams. The Lions and Seattle games are very much important and more important than the Chiefs game, your thoughts. You know what, Dan? I'm dying to talk to you about this, but go ahead. So on the show yesterday, I said that if Jaden can't go Monday night and it's like a
Starting point is 00:09:42 dicey situation, don't have him go on Monday night. And if he can't go on Monday night, don't let any of the other players that are a little bit iffy, don't have them go. Because the timing of the Chief's game, if there was going to be another injury, and I hope it's the last one this year for Jaden Daniels, couldn't have come at a better time. Because this is probably a game you were going to have a difficult time winning completely healthy. But they could win that game completely healthy. And the NFC games, the rest of the way, are crucial. They have one NFC win.
Starting point is 00:10:22 That's it. The Giants on opening day. And yes, it's a bit early to start talking about playoff scenarios, Tommy. But Dan, I wouldn't, look, if we had a bunch of healthy players, I would never, ever suggest that at all. You go win. They're good enough with Jaden and a healthy offense
Starting point is 00:10:45 to compete and to win some of these games. But the timing of it, actually, if he is banged up and hurt, Kime told me today on radio that he'd probably lean in the direction of Jaden not playing on Monday night. So go ahead. Ask what you want. Yeah, go ahead. Let's say he is, normally he would play. Okay. I mean, he's ready to play. The doctors have cleared him, coaches say he can play. Let's say it's not dicey. Let's say he's recovered and he can play.
Starting point is 00:11:23 Could you ever see a situation where you would bench your quarterback because the personnel around him isn't good enough? No. Okay. That's what a lot of people are saying. Whether Jaden can play or not, he shouldn't play. Well, let me just say this. Yes.
Starting point is 00:11:43 Nobody around him. In a meaningless game, yes. But week eight is not meaningless. Like if we were talking about... So the personnel should not dictate whether Jane Daniels plays or not. Not wouldn't for me, and I doubt it would for them. It wouldn't for me. Right.
Starting point is 00:12:01 Right. If he's dicey, if it's if it's like 70% he can play 30%, you got questions, okay. you know, sit them. But you don't sit them just because he's got lousy receivers. No, no, no, no, no. And that's not what Dan was suggesting. I know that. But there are people that are suggesting that.
Starting point is 00:12:26 I would say this, that if Jaden can't go and Terry and Debo are kind of ready to go, I would think about sitting them. And let me add to that. Part of it would be because they're playing on Monday night football, and then they've got a short turnaround, a short week going into what will be a very important game against Seattle at home on Sunday night football. The game, by the way, in which they're going to wear their old uniforms for the first time this year, the first of the three games. So at other positions, I mean, look, other positions, I want Marcus Marietta to be out there with as much help as he can get. Don't get me wrong.
Starting point is 00:13:10 But, man, the Marcus Marioo conversation is another one I got into this yesterday. Can you imagine being the person that actually watched the game Sunday and thought, A, Marcus Mariota played well, and B, that we're okay. It actually might work out better having Marcus Mariota as our quarterback. That is, by the way, a result of, you know, Snyder. you know, the Snyder 25 years. That is definitely, you know, as you've described recently in some of our conversations, people are still stuck and damaged from those years.
Starting point is 00:13:52 That's a damaged. That is somebody saying, yeah, you know, it's an RG3 situation. By the way, that's another topic altogether. How about RG3's mom? Oh, I know that. I mean, Jaden's mom. Jayden's mom, yeah. We've got to get to that.
Starting point is 00:14:07 Look, let me just tell you. I hope that we get to Thursday, and they're like, Jaden's fine, he's fine, he's practicing, he's ready to go. By the way, good chance we're going to have Terry and Debo back. And let's go beat the Kansas City Chiefs. It's the NFL. Anything can happen. They're playing great.
Starting point is 00:14:27 They had one of the most lopsided box scores I've ever seen in an NFL game. I talked about this yesterday, Tommy. Kansas City absolutely annihilated the Raiders. The final score was 31 to nothing, but it was achieved in a way in which I don't think I've ever seen it. They had 30 first downs to the Raiders three. The Raiders only were able to run 30 offensive plays. I'll tell you what, if Washington runs 30 offensive plays,
Starting point is 00:14:58 oh, that's not the issue. Part of the issue is they only had a, few number of opportunities because Kansas City had 15, 16, 17 play drives. That is certainly possible against our defense. Oh, absolutely. I don't think so. I don't know if it's possible against our defense unless the Chiefs fall down. Unless they fall down?
Starting point is 00:15:24 Yes. What do you mean? Unless on offense at one point, if the one in a running box or wide receivers falls down when he realized no one tackle them. and then makes the drive longer. Oh, I see. You understand what I'm saying? Yes.
Starting point is 00:15:42 I don't know if it's possible to have long drive. Against our team. Yeah, Dallas scored in 30 seconds before the end of the first half the other day. Yeah. And they were on the board in the first two minutes in a game. Yeah, I understand you know. This from Duntle. Duntle writes,
Starting point is 00:16:05 Hey Kevin, we've got a lot of problems with this team. I think the front office is not getting enough blame for the things that they have done or not done. They have not put enough around Jaden Daniels, and I believe this is a big problem. Jaden was so great last year, they think he can be Superman at all times. I think the Debo Samuel's acquisition was a great move, but I think playing the game with Terry McCorn was the downfall. They should have pursued an elite wide receiver and not played the game with Terry and his agent. So I wanted to read this for a couple of reasons.
Starting point is 00:16:36 First of all, they did invest in the offense in the offseason. They traded for Laramie Tunsell. They drafted an offensive lineman with their first pick. And they traded for Debo Samuel in the off season. So there was a lot of emphasis on trying to create a better group around Jaden Daniels. Keep in mind, everybody, you can't do everything in one off season. You just can't. And sometimes the players that are out,
Starting point is 00:17:03 out there, they don't want to come play for your team or you're not offering them what somebody else is offering them. But I wanted to get to this Terry situation because I can't believe on the phone lines yesterday, I got a lot of Terry stuff, you know, people going back to, which by the way, you know, I think you predicted, which is if they don't get off to a good start or if Terry is going to get injured, the team's going to get blamed for it. What Duntal is actually suggesting is they shouldn't have played the game with Terry at all. And I had a couple of callers, very revisionist history, calling in and saying, they should have traded him.
Starting point is 00:17:38 Right when they realized that he was delusional about what he wanted, they should have traded him. So I'll start there. Terry was not tradable people. The entire league told people like Diana Rusini, there were others that reported this, that what Terry was asking for was insane. They were never, he was not a tradable player because of what he was asking. asking for in a new contract. You're not going to trade for a player and then have him hold out demanding something that you don't think he's worth. The rest of the league agreed with Washington's
Starting point is 00:18:15 approach that he was not Jamar Chase or Justin Jefferson or even worthy of the D.K. Metcalf contract. So the idea that now, there was not a lot of trade Terry talk in the summer, okay? there's now a lot of revisionist with him getting hurt and with him, you know, maybe not being thrilled. They should have just traded him. No one was trading for Terry McCorn over the summer. Nobody because of what he wanted, money-wise. What should have happened is what I said in the moment and what I said ongoing and what I'll say now, is that Terry and his agent should have said, thank you so much for offering.
Starting point is 00:18:59 me this incredible contract that you don't have to offer me because I'm under contract for one more year. It's $45 million in guaranteed money with a chance to make a lot more than that if I produce at the level that I think I can produce at. This is very nice. I acknowledge your generosity, Adam Peters, and an ownership, and I'm going to make you proud to have offered me this deal. Now, there is some tongue-in-cheek in that response, because of course, you know, Terry was expecting a contract negotiation when this season ended, and a contract negotiation means a negotiation. You just don't take the first offer. But again, I will, no tongue-in-cheek, tell you what I've been telling you since last summer. He's a receiver that they think is really good
Starting point is 00:19:55 and is certainly their best, but is nowhere near worth the amount of money that he and his agent thought that he was worth. And because of that, it was a disaster. They were delusional as to what they thought his value was. And the deal that he ended up accepting, he could have accepted a month earlier and would have been there for the majority of training camp.
Starting point is 00:20:23 And I think, and I will go to my great, on this, believing that this was much more about Terry and his agent, his agent in particular, being way naive and way off base with what they thought he was worth entering his age 30 season. And the team probably should have never even broached the subject of a contract offer because it turned into a disaster. But I think Terry would still have asked for a new contract, and it could have led to a holdout anyway. But anyway, I think for those that still are stuck on the Terry thing, yeah, it would have been nice had he been in camp from the beginning. It would have been nice if the quad injury that he has
Starting point is 00:21:06 wasn't a result of not being in camp. I don't know if it was or wasn't. It'd be nice if Terry were a happier and more content player and not resentful. I'm not suggesting that I know he is, but I don't think he and his agent were happy at all with the deal they got. But you do understand, though, that while when people are looking for answers to the struggles of the team, this is a tangible answer. This is something they can get their hands around. I agree. Terry McCorn held out.
Starting point is 00:21:40 Your best receiver held out. There was a lot of things said that seemingly could have damaged the situation. This is an event that a fan who can look at the all-time. 22 from here till the sun doesn't come up anymore and not have any idea what's going on and say, look, this is the problem right here. It all went wrong with this. Yeah, and I just have a hard time pinning it on the team. I really do. Like I just, the team's offer to Terry was actually them saying, God, we really like you and we want you to be here.
Starting point is 00:22:25 And people thought that it was insulting and that they played hardball. They don't see it that way. I promise you that. They don't see it that way. Not every player entering the last year of their contract, especially as they get to 30 years old, gets a contract extension and gets a healthy 45 million minimum guaranteed offer for, you know, a contract extension. They didn't have to do it.
Starting point is 00:22:56 They did it because they liked the player. And it all went wrong when they decided to make them, you know, open up contract negotiations. Because I don't think they realized that the agent and Terry thought that he was Justin Jefferson or Jamar. Chase. I mean, Jamar Chish... Not to litigate the whole Terry thing all over again.
Starting point is 00:23:18 Well, we're doing that. But sometimes... I know that. But sometimes being right isn't good enough. You know? I mean, the team may have been right. But what if...
Starting point is 00:23:32 What if the analysis also included? Being right will set us back. I think being right... I think that they felt like, well, Tommy, look, I think maybe they did, you know, they came up a little bit, you know, and at that point, they thought they were beyond being right. They thought that they were being incredibly fair. And I think when you're a 19 month, 18 month at that point, GM, with your
Starting point is 00:24:07 first gig, you can't set a precedent with a terrible contract. I, I understand. I understand. I, understand the people that say, well, you know, there was no price that was too high for a player like him. You know, he's a culture guy. You also can talk all about, you know, him not being a top 10 or top five receiver, but he's the best they have. That is true. He is the best that they have. And they've missed him here the last couple of weeks. And they'll be better with him back in the lineup. But I don't know. I just, it's a shame that it went the way it went. I just, you know what? I think the team was right, but I also, to your point, think that the team was hurt in the process in trying to do the right thing. Yeah, I think so.
Starting point is 00:24:57 I don't think so in the way you think, but I think, I mean, I think there was some damage. You know, it's not tang, you can't, you can't say it was absolute, but it's hard to separate. the struggles from the Terry thing. But ultimately, ultimately, on a defense that wasn't that good, they lost two of their best pass rushers. Their path,
Starting point is 00:25:28 they're, you know, on defense. You know? So, I mean, that's really, they're not getting pressure on the quarterback. They're not stopping the run. And they lost two of their better, their new best defensive linemen. Yeah, no. I mean, There's no doubt. I talked about yesterday. The defense of an issue was actually a much bigger issue than the receiver issue. But real quickly, just back to what you said. You agree, but for a different reason. I would just ask you, okay, I understand sometimes you do, you know, the thing that you don't want to do because you think that it will ultimately end up better for everybody involved. How would they have done that?
Starting point is 00:26:11 I don't know. I don't know at what point the negotiations went off the rails. I don't know what the figure would have been where Terry and his agent who asked for a ridiculous amount would have said, okay, we're not insulted by that number. I don't know what that figure would have been. But that's the number you needed to find. Yeah. You know, I will concede this. Sometimes, even if you're right, playing hard.
Starting point is 00:26:41 hardball or the perception that you're playing hardball doesn't work out for you. And especially when it's your first big contract negotiation, you know, the interesting thing is Terry had never been hurt, basically. And they, you know, they were making these decisions based on kind of the injury analytics for the position after 30, the diminished return or the performance and the increased possibility of injury. And here he is. They were right. They may have been,
Starting point is 00:27:16 although maybe had they done the wrong thing and overpaid him at least by a certain amount, he would have gotten in and wouldn't have had the injury. Who knows? We're bouncing around here a lot, but it's fine. I did want to mention one thing, and I'm not going to read the email, but Mike sent it to me.
Starting point is 00:27:34 He reminded me that they signed Traylon Burks last week, first round pick from the Jahan Dotson class was in Tennessee. He's on the practice squad. Could he be an answer at wide receiver this week? Yeah, he could be for sure. Anybody that's played the position, and he's a talent, and he's a big guy, for whatever reason he never produced, he had bad quarterbacks.
Starting point is 00:27:55 He had Malik Willis, he had, you know, Willevis, some bad quarterbacks in Tennessee. But thanks for reminding me about that, Mike, because, yeah, Berks was signed. to the practice squad over the weekend, and he's a big old six-foot-three-inch, 230-pound target, who was a first-round pick. But they might get Terry back on Monday night as well.
Starting point is 00:28:22 We'll see. All right. I want to get your thoughts on the Cowboys game. I also want to get into this Jaden Daniels' RG3 thing with Jaden's mom. We'll talk some Monday night football, some baseball, and some other things as well. Right after. these words from a few of our sponsors.

Starting point is 00:31:19 You'll get them installed sometime, you know, early November before the cold weather hits. 86690 Nation, windownation.com. All right. You, by the way, predicted a 31 to 3.3.3.3. 30 Cowboys win, right? That was your prediction? Yes, I did. Yes, I did. I really thought the commanders would put up more of a fight. Oh, I predicted them to win. I predicted them to win. So I predicted them to win 2026. And that was not close. All right. So because we haven't talked since the game, what were your big takeaways from the 44 to 22 loss to the Cowboys?
Starting point is 00:32:06 Well, we knew the Cowboys could put up points. We've been saying that for weeks. It was a total mismatch. When you look at just the wide receiving core of George Pickens and C.D. Lamb against what the command is put out there, Luke McCaffrey and practice squad players. It would say, I knew we knew that was the word to be, but it was stunning to see it on the field. It really was. It was just amazing to see.
Starting point is 00:32:40 And, you know, with that kind of offense, the commanders couldn't keep up with the Cowboys in a track race. You know, the Cowboys scored the first two minutes, and the commanders answered. but, you know, they just didn't have the horses to win this race. That said, the defense, the tackling was absolutely horrendous. You know, the defense looked so slow on so many runs around the end. I mean, so many times the cowboys, I mean, just would get chunks of yards rushing. it was a defensive disaster. Even with the lack of personnel on offense,
Starting point is 00:33:32 it was still a defensive disaster. I mean, the tackling was horrendous. The tackling was bad and they looked slow. You're right. They are, they look slow, man. The play that C.D. Lamb scores on the 74-yard touchdown pass. I don't know what defense they were playing.
Starting point is 00:33:54 It looked like one of those inverted cover twos. And Wagner's dropping back as the middle linebacker into that hole in the cover two. And it's like, God, it took him forever to get back there. I don't think he was at fault, by the way, on that play. I think it was savage, actually. But, yeah, they just, it's, you know, the age thing real quickly, Tommy, on the age thing.
Starting point is 00:34:18 I haven't emphasized the age thing. Because the truth is, like, Bobby Wagner, Ertz, and I guess Von Miller, but he's a part-time player. Those are the two old players on the field. The age is so high on average because Josh Johnson's on the team, you know, at 39 going on 40 years old. Tressway is the punter, the long snappers old. But most of their best players are not old. The special teamer, Nick Ballore, is like 36 or 37 years old. By the way, he's a hell of a player on special teams.
Starting point is 00:34:59 So I've steered clear of kind of emphasizing this is an age thing. But with Wagner, for sure, he does a lot of things really well at a high level, but in coverage, he looks slow. And I don't know if you heard Quinn after the game Sunday night. Kime asked him about the defensive problems and the explosive plays. And I've talked about this the last two days. And he said, we're going to look at everything. You know, like everything's on the table.
Starting point is 00:35:34 You know, so, you know, I wonder. I would think that would include Joe Witt's status, the defensive coordinator. What did Quinn say yesterday when they asked him about Witt? Well, interestingly enough, they did not ask him about Witt Jr. in the press conference. Now, John Kime did ask, you know, a question like, okay, last night you told us you're going to look at everything. So what did you find, basically? And Quinn pushed it off to Thursday. He pushed it off and, you know, they have the extra day this week.
Starting point is 00:36:09 He doesn't have to answer anything until Thursday. And he said, we're going to start digging into those issues. Look, they've dug into these issues. but yeah, no, I mentioned yesterday he was not asked specifically about Witt. I agree with you. I was... That's a little surprised.
Starting point is 00:36:28 I was absolutely... Yeah, I would have thought that, you know, and look, there's a way to ask it. You could just say, have you ruled out making any changes to your defensive coaching staff? You know, and that could include, you know, different play caller, you know, it could include firing somebody, but there's a way to ask it. I think, yeah, no, I'm with you.
Starting point is 00:36:51 I actually tuned into that press conference yesterday because I wanted to hear what he said about the defensive coordinator, because that's on the minds of a lot of people after the last two games. There's a lot of external pressure out there on Joe Whit, Jr. I'm just wondering how much internal pressure there is. Yeah. I mean, because, I mean, we've seen a pretty, again, their defensive personnel is lacking. When healthy, not quite as lacking as it is now. But we've seen enough of a work product from Joe Witt, Jr. now over two years, I think, to make some judgments on them.
Starting point is 00:37:37 So look, it's a complicated issue for me because I don't know what the reasons the defense is so bad are. I don't. I was told a few weeks ago twice in back-to-back weeks. It's a lot more than just one thing. And I believe that that's probably true. You also have this situation, Tommy, you know, interestingly, as bad as the defense is right now and as bad as it's played here recently, you can easily point to other things as to why they lost to the bears. Three turnovers, minus three in the turnover margin. Why they lost to the Cowboys, penalties, dropped passes, two more turnovers. Now, the defense isn't helping out at all. I mean, it would be nice if the defense could help out, but I don't think they're capable
Starting point is 00:38:25 of doing it. But there, it's, you know, but yeah, I mean, I, I, I certainly, I don't, I'm guessing that something big isn't going to have. happen this week. But I'll tell you what, and I said this last week, if the final score of the Chicago game on Monday night and the Dallas game on Sunday, if the final scores were 45 to 41 and the other one was 42 to 38, you know, where the offense was doing its part and not turning the ball over and not dropping passes and not committing penalties and Jaden even playing at a higher level,
Starting point is 00:39:05 I mean, you'd have to ask that question and he'd have to answer it. Have to. Oh, I think, I think, I know there's a lot of things going on. There's a lot of things going wrong. Yeah. But, you know, you divorce what you're seeing from the moment from what you've seen since he's arrived. Fair. and there's not
Starting point is 00:39:35 there's not a lot to feel confident about you know it's an on-the-job training situation and look I mean Dan Quinn is not going to hire a guy who he doesn't think can do the job I mean Quinn picked him
Starting point is 00:39:48 he brought him here from Dallas with so Quinn and Quinn's a defensive coach so he must think very highly of Joe Witt you know but
Starting point is 00:39:58 it hasn't shown through yet 27 games, he's been the defensive coordinator, a first-time defensive coordinator. And I said this on yesterday's show, or maybe on the post-game Sunday. Of the 27, 18, 19, 20 of them have been bad. Bad. But have they been bad because of him? Have they been bad because of personnel? Have they been bad because of things that he can't control?
Starting point is 00:40:31 I think it's probably a lot of everything, but you do have a defensive head coach. And you've got a team now through 27 games of him being the head coach, where you really have been pretty bad defensively. Again, can't blame it from I can't on Adam Peters 20 months into the job. He needs a couple more off seasons to build up this roster that was left by, you know, as you called Ron or Rob in your column, send me my ring Rob Rivera. That's still one of the more unbelievable, delusional,
Starting point is 00:41:14 you know, detached from reality quotes of the last, of the many, many years of some really crazy quotes. But that one in that time column before the 23 season, if I've left them with the starting quarterback of the future, Sam Howl and a roster that they end up winning the Super Bowl with, send me my ring. Oh, my God. You know, speaking of delusional quotes. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:41:42 Are we going to talk about the situation going on with Jane Daniels' mom and RG3? Yes, we got to get to that story. I did want to mention real quickly about Rob Rivera, as it was written in your column. He was on the sidelines being interviewed at the Cal North Carolina game Friday night. The Belichick coached North Carolina Tar Heels against Cal. That was a smell test winner, by the way. Smell test, by the way, 5-5 and 1 this weekend, the first non-winning weekend of the season. But anyway, do you know what Rivera is doing now?
Starting point is 00:42:22 Yeah, he's the general manager of Cal. Your sports department. He's the GM at his alma mater. These are positions now in college athletics because of the salary cap because of NIL. He is managing essentially, I mean, that's the one job he was horrible at in the NFL. Yes. Okay? I mean, I never thought Ron Rivera was a terrible coach.
Starting point is 00:42:51 He was not a good coach here for a lot of reasons. He was a worst general manager. But yeah, he's the GM of Cal's, you know, football program. It might be the whole athletic department. I don't know. He also calls games on radio. I've heard him on Westwood One calling games, and he's pretty good, actually. Pretty good.
Starting point is 00:43:13 Have you heard him call a game? No, I have not heard him. I'm hoping he has cut down his analysis because he was a little bit windy, you know? Yeah. Just a little bit. Speaking of windy, Quinn gets really windy, and so does Joe Witt, Jr. Really windy. People who do that, they're trying to avoid answering the question.
Starting point is 00:43:37 Quinn starts off. That's what they're doing. We've talked about this before. I think it's unique. I'm wondering if it is. I think it is. Quinn starts off every press conference, every single one, with prepared remarks. And usually, like, it's a theme.
Starting point is 00:43:57 It's some sort of lesson. It's something that, you know, they're focused on or he's communicated to the team. It was about the Navy SEALs yesterday and how, you know, he knows some Navy SEALs. And when they get off course by, you know, whatever any, the overarching theme was, we're off course right now. We're off course. I mentioned this when he got hired because I went back and watched a lot of his press conferences, both as a head coach. and as a defensive coordinator in Dallas. And he did the same thing.
Starting point is 00:44:28 You know, how many coaches stepped to the podium? And it's like, Dorrance Armstrong really upset, but he's lost for the year. But Jaden's MRI turned out pretty well. I'll have more information for that about that at the end of the week. I'll take any questions you have. That's not Quinn. Well, you know what?
Starting point is 00:44:49 I think more and more coaches are doing what Quinn does, because it gives them a feeling of their controlling the narrative of the press conference. Instead of just saying, okay, go ahead, ask me anything. You know, it sets a tone for basically the press conference. It's just my amateur analysis. I think John Harbaugh does it. I don't know if any other coaches do it, but I think more do it than just simply just opening up the press conference to questions.
Starting point is 00:45:20 Okay. I don't think. It shouldn't work. No. No, it shouldn't. Yeah. No, it shouldn't. And I think the long-winded answers are to avoid actually directly answering questions. That's different.
Starting point is 00:45:36 And he does that pretty well. I mean, you know, just on the thing that we were talking about, the Joe Wood Jr., you know, I mean, there were answers where he just, you know, he basically pushed it off to Thursday. Thursday and then he started to talk about other things. But I mean, you know, I'm looking at the transcript from the open yesterday. And this, you know, this is what he does. It's like, you know, he's got a message. And the message yesterday was the message he had for his team about Navy SEAL friends when they, you know, when they dive or they sail with no GPS or no landmarks. And, you know, he's like, the three things you need to know, or where are you, where are you going,
Starting point is 00:46:16 and what bearings are needed. And just three degrees, Tommy. two or three degrees off and you're off course. And I told the team today, that's where we are. We are off course. And then he got into a lot of other things. But he's got things like that. I think he's putting it together. I don't think the PR people are doing that.
Starting point is 00:46:38 I think he spends time. No, I think. Yeah. Quinn is media savvy and has spent a lot of time over the years being trained to be media savvy. Yeah. Not by accident. And he's smart to do that.
Starting point is 00:46:55 I bet you he was prepared for a Joe Witt question yesterday. He should have been. Yeah. All right. Somebody should have been. Let's get to Jaden Daniels' mom and the tweet she put out after the game on Sunday night. We will do that next after these words from a few of our sponsors. All right, Tommy.
Starting point is 00:47:21 Tell us about Shelley's. Well, Shelly's back room at 1331 S3 Northwest in the district. It's many things to many people. I've told you before on Sundays or any day the commanders play, it's Commander Central when the Caps have a game. It's filled with Caps fans before and after the game. Baseball World Series starting. It'll be a great place to watch the World Series.
Starting point is 00:47:49 But it's also a holiday festival. place. With the holidays coming up here in November and December, if your office is looking for a place to hold its office party, Shelly's back room would be a great place to do that. It would make you a hero. If you were in charge of the party and you found Shelly's, it would make you a hero to your co-workers. And here's the best part. If any of your coworkers were offended, maybe by a cigar smoke, You don't want them there anyway, okay? You don't want them at your party. So it weeds out the nerds, and it just, you know, you get to the meat, the people you want at your Christmas party.
Starting point is 00:48:33 You know, showy's host great events. They host the D.C. Grays annual fundraiser. They've got, you know, very comfortable seating, a great weight staff there. You know, they offer all kinds of food available for large. groups. You can find out more by you going to shelley's backroom.com and emailing Shelly's at info at shelley's backroom.com about hosting an event at Shelly's. All right, Tommy, let's get to this story that I think some of you know about. I wouldn't suggest that all of you know about it because it really is social media driven. But Regina Jackson, the mother of Jaden Daniels,
Starting point is 00:49:19 tweeted something out after the game on Sunday, after Jaden had gotten hurt, and there were, I'm sure, a lot of people, you know, on social media saying things like, you know, Jaden Daniels, hurt again, here we go, same thing happened to us with RG3. And so she tweeted out, quote, I wish you would stop manifesting RG3 on my son. Words are powerful, and that's all that's talked about, closed quote. Well, Griffin, RG3, of course, read it and injected himself into the conversation. If ever there's an opportunity to do so, especially when it comes to quarterback conversation in D.C., he's going to do it. He tweeted, quote, I have always supported Jaden Daniels.
Starting point is 00:50:11 He retweeted Regina Jackson, Jaden Daniels' mother's tweet, and then tweeted himself, quote, tweeted, I've always supported Jaden Daniels and want nothing but the best for him. Being QB1 in Washington, D.C. comes with an intense spotlight that I know well. You love your son, and the real fans do too. I want a healthy career for him. He will always have my support, closed quote. So I'll start with you, your reaction to this. Well, you know what?
Starting point is 00:50:44 I think with all due respect to Jaden, mom. I mean, this is this is like some kind of ghost that hangs over to franchise. You know, I think we may have to perform an exorcism of sorts to finally, if we
Starting point is 00:51:04 really want to get rid of the RG3 aura that still hovers over this team and he does everything he can to make sure it still hovers over this team. You know, maybe, you know, very a knee brace at midfield, at FedEx field, some kind of exorcism or something like that.
Starting point is 00:51:25 I understand people's reactions. You know, there's a lot of similarities. There's a lot of differences. There's a lot of similarities to both quarterbacks. But Jay and Daniels, in all the good ways, is not RG3. and this is not that situation all over again. But, you know, that was such an exciting great year that people, you know, who experienced it are still living with it, trying to live with what went wrong.
Starting point is 00:52:06 That's still being litigated and argued what went wrong. You know, I mean, and I understand people. people thinking, oh my God, are we living this again? I don't think we are, but it's only human nature. I'm just curious, her tweet, which started all of this, do you think that this was about responding to those that are trying to say, oh, here we go again. You know, we got another, you know, Heisman Trophy, first season greatness, injury problems. or that it had something to do with her feelings about RG3? I think the former.
Starting point is 00:52:53 Okay. I mean, I think she's, I think it was, you know, all the response from people bringing up what happened RG3 and equating it to her son, you know. Let me ask you a question. Do you think she should have said anything? Absolutely not. No. I mean, there's just, that would be my... The best thing she can do is stay off social media for her son.
Starting point is 00:53:20 100%. I mean, I, this is the only part of this that, you know, just... It's not that I'm irked by it. I just, if I knew this person and she's smart, I've heard her interviewed before, she's become an agent, she's her son's agent, and I just don't think responding to things like this on social media is, smart. I just think that that is, it's emotional and she was very emotional, I'm sure, you know, but don't get on social media after a game. That would be my advice. Don't listen to
Starting point is 00:53:54 these people who literally nine out of ten are just trying to get a reaction. So, oh, that's number one. Number one is, you know, and you brought up the mother before anybody else did. I do want to make sure that, you know, you get credit for bringing up that the mother was very involved when he was at Arizona State to the point in which she's not allowed to go back to Arizona State anymore, although maybe that's now cleared. But the NCAA in Arizona State put restrictions because she was involved in basically, you know, for the lack of a better description, some illegal recruiting practices, which there are none anymore. She's named in the NCAA investigation report.
Starting point is 00:54:40 She is clearly very, very much involved, as many parents are in their kids' lives. And in this particular case, as his agent, in his professional life. I'm not going to even go down that path and what it may mean or what it may not mean. I have tried to ignore talking about, you know, some of the stuff that's been on social media about him and his dates. since she's on a date with Jaden and somebody else, whatever. But I would say, for starters, to Regina Jackson, don't look at social media after a game. Don't respond to people who say anything about your son.
Starting point is 00:55:25 And the other part of this is, I don't know anybody that's reasonable that even thinks about RG3 in the same category of player or person as your son. Now, we're just still getting to know your son. We are. It's only been, you know, 27 games, 25 of which he's played in, and, you know, just over a year. But there's just not that much in common between the two other than they were both Heisman
Starting point is 00:55:58 trophy winners and they were both drafted by the same team at number two overall. And they both had unbelievable. rookie seasons in which the fan base was just beyond itself excited after those seasons. But, you know, RG3, you know, look, that's a different subject because if you don't think she was, you know, pointing this in any direction at RG3, I'm not debating that. I don't know what she thinks of RG3 or doesn't think of RG3. I think there are a lot of people in sports that understand that, you know, he loves to kind of inject himself into things in which he's kind of delusional about how he's presenting
Starting point is 00:56:44 himself. I mean, RG3's career didn't end in Washington solely because he got injured. Okay, people? We all know that. RG3's career wasn't going to be going much further had he been healthy. For a lot of reasons. Number one, he was self-absorbed beyond description, much more interested in his brand than he was his game. And in his defense, he was in an organization with the absolute worst owner in sports who was never going to give him an opportunity to legitimately, you know, grow and mature with the best coaching staff that he could have possibly wanted coming out of Baylor. I mean, it was set up for no matter what his limitations were, a football player, if he was ever going to reach, you know, a level that was much greater than
Starting point is 00:57:41 being just a dual threat running kind of quarterback in 2012, he had Mike Shanahan, Kyle Shanahan, Matt LaFleur, Sean McVeigh, I mean, Mike McDaniel, the list goes on and on and on. And, you know, he never had that opportunity because he had an owner that basically, you know, responded to RG3 and RG3's fathers every whim. You know, every whim. That would be another... But you see... Yeah.
Starting point is 00:58:11 But that's the similar... That's one of the similarities that's... That's maybe off-putting for some people. What, the parent? ...involvement? The hovering parent. Yeah, but she's not telling Josh Harris along with... I didn't say she's the same, but it's similar.
Starting point is 00:58:28 But at least there's an ownership structure in place where if she were similar, to the RG3 family situation, which I don't think she is, but if she were, it wouldn't work. Just like it didn't work when he went to LSU and was playing for Brian Kelly. All of a sudden, whatever involvement she had at Arizona State was not the same at LSU. I mean, it's just two totally different situations. You and I have talked about RG3 so much over the years, But the social media stuff, I don't follow him. I don't have any interest in him.
Starting point is 00:59:08 But it pops up in my timeline all the time. Like when Jaden got injured against Green Bay, you know, he put himself into the conversation about the team needs to protect him. The team needs to do this. Like how more transparent could you be that you're talking about yourself? This particular tweet, I think, is more kind of not indicting of him. but he's always looking for an opportunity to be a part of the quarterback conversation in Washington. I don't think, I think the number of people
Starting point is 00:59:45 that feel like he was done wrong has dwindled so much over the years to just now a small percentage of people that you're never going to be able to convince. I think you're underestimating it significantly. I think if there's a documentary that comes out about him, he'll be the victim. By the documentarians? Or just based on how he handles the answers to it if he's a part of it?
Starting point is 01:00:20 And that's the way people... No, by the documentarian. He'll be a victim. I mean, I think most people know enough about the story to know that he was not a victim. Although the one thing that you could say he was a victim of was Dan Snyder, as was everybody else that was in the organization with him owning the team that had potential. And by the way, more times than not, look, he was 22, 23 years old. If he had had a different personality and was more of, okay, Dan, I hear what you're saying,
Starting point is 01:00:59 but, you know, I'm going to listen to my coach. talk to my coach about but that's not what happened as we know whatever this conversation gets tiresome after a while but the big takeaway for me is Regina Jackson your son's
Starting point is 01:01:15 completely different your son's situation is completely different and don't respond on social media to people on things like this in fact don't even go on social media after a game in which the team loses and your son
Starting point is 01:01:31 gets hurt. Fortunately... Remember at one point last year, the first time he came out of a game with his knee or something she tweeted out about it, right? He's fine. Yeah. He's fine. Don't worry, he's fine.
Starting point is 01:01:49 You know what? I would rather gotten that from her. Talk to him. He's fine, everybody. Like, provide us with some information. That's fine. I mean, it's not fine. The team should be provided.
Starting point is 01:02:01 everybody with the information. Yeah. I don't know. This is such a deeper conversation about parents and kids and involvement and letting them figure it out on their own or letting them, you know, advocate for themselves. And I'm not suggesting that she doesn't do that. But, you know, and perhaps this is what he wants, too. He wants that involvement.
Starting point is 01:02:30 I don't know. I don't know anything about the relationship, nor do any of you. But we can say, I think the adult portion of the audience can say, probably not a great idea to be on social media, reading about your son's injury or game, especially if they lost, and definitely don't respond to anybody or put anything out. Okay. Let's finish up with the two Monday night games last night,
Starting point is 01:02:59 and the incredible game seven in the American League Championship series. We'll get to those things right after these words from a few of our sponsors. I was looking at something as it relates to the NFC East Division odds. They had really narrowed on my bookie, Tommy, recently, to Philadelphia being a slight favorite and Washington being pretty close. Well, after this past weekend, Philly is back to a sizable favorite at minus 280.
Starting point is 01:04:30 And then Washington's at plus 510, and Dallas is at plus 550. So the odds are changing pretty quickly in the NFC East. Not great news for us, but like I say all the time, they're going to go ahead and play the games anyway. But if you want to bet on football, you want to bet on baseball, the NBA starts today, Tommy. Did you know that? The NBA season opens up tonight.
Starting point is 01:04:59 You did know that? Yes, I do. I know that. The Wizards open up tomorrow in Milwaukee, and I'll have a column in tomorrow's paper about that. I can't wait. Well, tonight we get Rockets Thunder, the defending champs against Kevin Durant's new team, and then we get Warriors, Lakers, late night. The Wizards open up tomorrow night on the road against the Bucks. They are eight and a half point underdogs at Milwaukee. Let me see what the Wizards over-under number for wins is. It's not going to be very good. Let's just see if where they have this.
Starting point is 01:05:37 NBA regular season wins. Here we go. What are you saying 20? It's going to be something and a half. What did they win last year? 19 games? 18. They won 18.
Starting point is 01:05:49 18 games last year? 15 year before. God, my bookie has an S load of prop bets for the NBA season. The over-under for the Wizards regular season win total is 20 and a half. 20 and a half. And it's not the lowest in the league.
Starting point is 01:06:13 Utah is at 18 and a half. So my bookie, get there for if you're a new customer by going to the Kevin Sheeonshow.com slash my bookie. But everybody to get that 50% cash bonus, use DC. reload. Real quickly on the two games last night, man, Baker Mayfield, who is a, you know, a legitimate MVP candidate, he was off last night. Mike Evans got hurt again.
Starting point is 01:06:42 You know, one of the things I was thinking watching Baker Mayfield last night just miss people left and right throw high on every other throw, is that quarterbacks aren't perfect. even the really good ones aren't like on the money, perfect throw, perfect play, every play. And I think when you get so obsessed and so focused on one team, the mistakes that that player makes just get completely exaggerated in terms of how detrimental they were to the team or how detrimental they are to kind of, to kind of the big picture of the player. Quarterbacks hard, man. Even the best ones make mistakes. He had an interception in the game.
Starting point is 01:07:31 He lost a fumble. Actually, they ended up recovering it. And he was 28 of 50 in the game. I mean, he just really couldn't hit the broadside of the ocean from a boat. I mean, it was impossible for him to be on target. But he's still good. Tampa is still good. Detroit's better, though.
Starting point is 01:07:52 They're just better. I think they are, and they lost Mike Evans again. So that was that game. The late game I stayed up and watched it all, Tommy, because it was the game that decided whether or not I would have eight consecutive winning weeks with the smell test, or I would have a 500 week. I have a 500 week for the first time. Not a losing week, even though I know you lost money if you go 500.
Starting point is 01:08:18 I understand how that works. But the Texans and Seahawks are legit. defensively. And JSN, Jackson Smith, Nijigba, top five, no worse than top six, seven receiver in the league. He has emerged as a legitimate star wide receiver. And there are lots of them in this league. He's uncheckable, legitimately uncheckable. And Seattle's good. And they play, you know, they had, so they played on Monday night football. They have a buy week. And then, they play us a week from Sunday night where we're going to be heading into the game on a short week. So major advantage Seattle in terms of net rest days when they get here on November 2nd.
Starting point is 01:09:10 Pretty good team though. Seattle and San Francisco and the Rams are all five and two in the NFC West. That's part of the problem is that if Washington is going to salvage their season, asked the question, Tommy, earlier today, is the season salvageable? I think it is. It's way too early to count them out. And as long as JD5 comes back and is healthy, and that's a big if, understood, I think they'll have a chance. But they're probably their path to getting into the postseason, more likely than not will be by winning the division. They got to get to those Philly games in that Dallas game late in the year. They finished Philly, Dallas, Philly with, you know, somewhere around seven wins, eight wins, where they're cooked.
Starting point is 01:10:01 All right. What did you think of the baseball game last night? Did you watch it? Yeah, it was terrific. I mean, the postseason has been a great postseason. It has been. I mean, it really has. Seventh game of a baseball playoff game.
Starting point is 01:10:18 I mean, it's one of the great events. You always, whenever I'm out of seventh, Whenever I'm watching the seventh game, I'm always wishing I'm there. You know, because the crowd is so juiced up. And in Toronto, they were really particularly juiced up, and they were in Seattle when the Mariners played there in games three, four, and five. But the big debate is, you know, did Dan Wilson make a mistake by bringing Eduardo Barzado in that position instead of their closer, Andres Munoz, who had more rest. He hadn't pitched in a couple of days.
Starting point is 01:10:58 Right. Where Bizarro had pitched a day before, he pitched well. I mean, Bizarro in the postseason, in the last four or five starts, seven, four or four or five appearances, he's given up one run in seven to two-thirds innings. Yeah. So he's pitched well, but the other guy was rested. He's also a stud, too. But you don't know what conversations happened.
Starting point is 01:11:22 you know, between a manager and relievers, that's always the thing before game as to who would be available, who could be used, who couldn't. But the big story for the Blue Jay's postseason is Flat Guerrero Jr. And what a monster postseason he's had. Huge. After they invested so much money in him this winter with a 14-year contract. I've thought, I'm rooting for the Blue Jay. I spent a lot of time in Toronto early in my baseball writing career. I saw Joe Carter hit the home run in my Perth World Series in 93.
Starting point is 01:12:04 93. Yes. And they're a Canadian team, the only Canadian team, so I'm pulling for them. Springer's home run was just electric. I mean, that was unbelievable. And everybody thought there was a chance. Another guy who's a great postseason player, Oh, yeah.
Starting point is 01:12:21 I mean, the Houston, the Houston years. Houston and absolutely. Yeah. The World Series is going to be interesting to watch the Dodgers seem like a juggernaut. I mean, they're getting great pit starting pitching to go along with their fabulous lineup. And, you know, people are still in awe of what Otani did in that game. Can we talk about that? I've got that on my list to finish up.
Starting point is 01:12:49 Is that the greatest individual performance? that you've ever seen? Yes, it is. I was hope you weren't going to say everybody that's saying that was born in 1999 or in 2005. I mean, Reggie Jackson hit three home runs in a World Series game,
Starting point is 01:13:11 but he didn't pitch. Right. But let me just point out that among the greatest individual performances of all time, You have to include Sammy Ball. This wasn't a playoff game. But in 1943 against the Detroit Lions, Sammy Ball threw four touchdown passes,
Starting point is 01:13:32 had four interceptions on defense, and kicked an 81-yard punt. Well, you know, I'm glad you didn't go back that far to find it. And I'm glad you didn't go to another sport to find something to match Otani. For those of you guys that missed it, Otani in the game against the Brewers, the closeout game to sweep the brewers, had three home runs, three for three by the way, three home runs, walked in his other at bat, pitched six innings of two hit, no earned run, 10 strikeouts. It's just There's nothing comparable to that.
Starting point is 01:14:21 Nothing comparable to that. No. Wow. And it's amazing that here we are most of the time in baseball in particular when we talk about greatest players, we don't talk about a player who's played,
Starting point is 01:14:35 I mean, Barry Bond's, you know, the idiot who think he was one of eight among the greatest. But besides that, most of the discussion is about older players. And we, We may be watching the greatest player in the history of the game, period, who's from Japan, where Japanese baseball took off after Babe Ruth did a barnstorming tour.
Starting point is 01:14:59 Is that how it happened? That's how it happened? Well, no, there was Japanese baseball before that. All right. But it really got energized when Ruth went over there with a group of Major League players and did a barnstorming tour in the 30s. So, yeah, I mean, that we don't usually talk about, you know, the greatest player of all time in baseball in our lifetime, but this guy's in that conversation. Crazy.
Starting point is 01:15:29 I mean, in that performance, if you didn't think so, kind of, you know. And he has already paid that outrageous salary the Dodgers have given them. well haven't they just made so much money just you know internationally and in japan because of this yeah yeah yeah yeah um he's already paid his freight yeah all right who do you like in the world series should we wait until thursday show yeah only to thursday okay because i'm not sure all right uh anything else from you i got nothing else for you today boss all right enjoy the hard day's work today enjoy the nba double header tonight. I'll be back tomorrow everybody. One and two the count.
Starting point is 01:16:17 Otati, oh, Toddy! His third home run!
