You don't want it.
You don't need it.
But you're going to get it anyway.
The Kevin Cheon Show.
Here's Kevin.
The show's presenting sponsor, as always,
Window Nation, 86690 Nation,
Window Nation.com if you need new windows.
Mention my name.
I promise you they'll take really good care.
Two guests on the show today.
Tim Murray's going to jump on in the final segment.
We'll talk some college football,
including discussing,
Maryland freshman quarterback Malik Washington.
He's a true freshman.
He has played very well as the Terps have jumped out to a 3-0 record.
Not the toughest of schedule so far.
They have their first big conference game and road test on Saturday at Wisconsin.
Before Tim, the second part of Steve Souter's film breakdown of the Packers game last Thursday night,
he will address all of the problems the team had on defense,
explain them and give you his three highest-graded defensive players
and three lowest-graded defensive players.
You guys loved Steve doing this film breakdown.
I got dozens and dozens of emails and tweets.
I knew you would like them.
I recorded it before, you know, I introduced,
it on the show the other day, and I just knew that this was going to be good for most of you.
Look, not everybody loves the film breakdowns that Cooley used to do or anybody else does.
It's not for everybody, but for those of you that like it, yes, Steve was really good.
I'm going to read a couple of these emails and tweets.
This one from Tim, my guy in Indianapolis, Tim's a huge skins fan.
Tim wrote, hearing Steve Suter would be doing film breakdown kind of bummed me out.
It was the reality that Cooley is drifting even further away.
But my guy, Kevin, was right.
Steve was gold.
Really enjoyed the insight.
In my case, the reality.
Highly recommend.
Thank you for that, Tim.
From Brandon, Steve was awesome.
Hopefully he continues on the show.
from Peter in Manassas,
Souter, period,
outstanding, period.
And then this from Walter.
Walter writes, Kevin,
I'm a lifelong Redskins fan,
and have loved listening to you since the Riggins days.
Yes, I did a show with John Riggins.
Now many years ago, 2006, 2007, part of 2008.
Although Rigo came on the show with Tommy and I
on a regular basis,
and he was a fixture on a show.
the pregame show for like two or three years.
Anyway, Walter continues.
You and Cooley together, my number one D.C. sports show of all time.
Cooley's film analysis was groundbreaking for the day, and nobody's come close to it since
he stopped doing it on a regular basis.
But listening to Steve Souter, I heard a Cooley disciple.
Wow, he was good.
And he delivered it in a similar way.
way to Cooley. Even though it's audio and not video, the way he described things,
painted a very clear picture. Can't wait to hear the other part of his Packers breakdown.
Thanks to you and the Maryland baseball coach who had the idea for you to bring Steve on in this way.
Also, Kev, go Terps. Thanks for that, Walter. Yes, Maryland baseball head coach Matt Swope.
It was his idea to have Steve come on and do this.
He's a listener of the show.
And yeah, I knew once Steve got through his first few minutes,
I knew it was going to be good.
I've had Steve on the show so many times to talk Maryland football,
and he's always been excellent, excellent analyst, fearless,
not a homer, tells it like it is.
And Walter, I agree stylistically,
which, by the way, is important for the majority.
of you that listen to things like this.
It was, it was eerily similar to the way Chris did it.
Now, Chris was the pioneer of, you know, the film breakdown.
And he's the best ever.
And by the way, he'll probably come on and do a couple of them this year if he watches
the games.
But what you said, Walter, that Chris didn't even need video for it to, you know, pop,
for it to be understandable.
to be so entertaining, that is a true testament to how good he was at communicating it.
And I thought Steve was excellent on that front too.
So we'll get to the rest of Steve's film analysis of the defense from the game last week
in the next segment.
And then Tim will jump on and we'll do college football with Tim.
So two stories to get to here in the open.
The Jaden Daniels injury situation, which Dan Quinn updated us on earlier today.
I'm going to play a lot of the Quinn sound in a few minutes.
Jaden did not practice today.
Marcus Mariotta took all first team reps and Marcus Marioita took the quarterback's press conference responsibilities today.
But I'll play for you what Quinn said about this situation and give you my updated hunch on whether or not J.D.
will play Sunday against the Raiders.
But first, the other story today was a bit of a doozy.
Kind of came out of nowhere.
The RFK Stadium Agreement that the team in the city reached last month is not yet final as of the recording of this podcast.
Today was the scheduled second vote to finalize the deal that they came to last month to return the team to the RFK site.
but the city council apparently tried to change the deal at the 11th hour.
Washington's new team president, Mark Klaus, wrote the D.C. City Council and chairman
Phil Mendelsohn a letter which made the rounds on social media this morning.
It expressed deep concern about the city's last-minute demands, which the team says are unworkable,
and impractical.
What did the city ask for hours before the vote was to be held?
I had Eric Flack from Channel 9 on the radio show.
He said that they wanted $10 million a year in a penalty if the new housing development,
which is part of the RFK site plan, isn't finished on time.
That apparently would be a deal breaker.
Now, there were other things like concern,
from the city council and I guess a
group in D.C.
Over heritage trees being cut down.
Also, the teams demanding
that the team, I'm sorry, the city's demanding
that the team be zero waste
with reusable cups.
Also, that the team be low fossil fuel
emissions when they
open up this new stadium.
Yeah, I mean, look, this is the vote where they need simple majority, not two-thirds.
They need seven votes.
Eric said on the show with me today he thinks those votes exist and that it will pass.
He also said that the letter from Mark Klaus to Mendelsohn and the city council reflect a lot of anger and frustration.
They've already been angry and frustrated during this process.
I'm not going to read the entire letter.
I'm going to read one paragraph, though.
This was Mark Klaus's letter to Chairman Mendelssohn and members of the D.C. Council.
It opens, I'll read the opening, and then I'll read the fourth paragraph of this.
It opens with the Washington Commander's Right to Express our deep concern regarding the last-minute new demands proposed by the council mere hours before the final vote on the RFK,
Campus Redevelopment Act of 2025.
He writes, less than 24 hours before the final vote, the commander's organization was presented
with a list of unworkable and impractical new last-minute demands by council members, which
we simply cannot agree to as it jeopardizes the deal.
Most demands were made verbally without supporting documentation, given our deep engagement with
the council over many months and are proven willingness to address any council member feedback,
this is unexpected and unfortunate.
I'm guessing that this vote will pass. Maybe it's already passed by the time you listen to this.
I guess what I don't understand is, why do you need two votes? They agreed to this. They voted to
it last, voted two thirds last August. Why do they have to?
to vote on the same thing again. I don't know. Some of you may be able to explain that very easily
to me. But I would expect for this to get done, but it was unexpected for the team, I guess,
and probably not leaving, you know, a great feel and tone to the relationship here as this
last vote gets taken. Hopefully it does. I'll do more of this, obviously, on tomorrow's show with Tommy.
I'm sure he'll have some information and has probably talked to people.
All right, let's get to the first practice today.
And what happened before the practice, which is we learned that Jaden would not be practicing.
Not a surprise, clearly.
Here's Dan Quinn addressing it.
John Kime asks him about Jaden in practice and then asks a follow-up question,
and you'll hear the answer to that as well.
And what is the plan for Jaden today and then the rest of the week?
Sure.
So Jaden had good rehab session day.
He also threw out on the field.
He won't practice today.
And then as we get into Friday, I'll give you an assessment of where we're at after we go through practice on Friday.
How much are you finding that you're having to hold him back from doing too much at this point?
Yeah, we're going through that process.
Like that's him as a competitor, like, but we also, you know, recognize the important.
importance of the person, the player, what he means to the franchise. So we're also going to be
smart, not just fast in this assessment. But this is a player that's absolutely wanting to do
everything all the time. So it was a good start to the week for us, throwing the movements at the
position. So I know we've talked a little bit about return to play, but there are position-specific
skills that you do for each one. So you hit those today, which was a good start. And then, like
I said, I'll give you the final update on Friday.
So those were Dan Quinn's first comments about Jaden Daniels during his press conference today.
Before practice started, he announced that Jaden wouldn't practice, said that the rehab session went well, said he threw the ball well, said that his movements and some of the markers and the position-specific skills that he's got to hit each day.
He said he hit those today, which was a, quote, good start.
And then he was asked by Nikki Javala about if whether or not he needs to see Jaden on the practice field for him to play in the game.
You'll hear Nikki's question and Dan Quinn's answer right here.
Do you need to see him back on the field with the rest of the team before you feel okay?
Yeah, I would.
It's important.
Timing, reps, the movements.
But it was a good first step to it, Nikki.
But yeah, yeah, we'd have to get some reps for sure.
So no practice this week, he doesn't play on Sunday.
That makes it simple for everybody, right?
I mean, there are plenty of quarterbacks who don't practice during the course of a week,
but end up suiting up and starting on Sunday.
Quinn basically told us, didn't basically tell us, he told us,
Jaden's got a practice to play.
I think that's the smart way to do it with a franchise quarterback in week three.
They got to see it in practice.
They got to make sure that it is working properly.
the knee, that he is 100%.
You know, this isn't a, you know,
a veteran quarterback who's been through the wars,
who's always a little bit banged up.
And, you know, if he gets to 90, 95%, he's playing.
But we got to keep him out of practice
to make sure he gets to that level.
This is different.
He's got to be at 100% to play.
And he's telling you, for us to be sure of that,
we've got to see him out there taking reps in practice.
So he didn't practice today.
We'll know if he practices tomorrow.
If he doesn't practice tomorrow, then it's either Friday or he's out.
So it's not going to be one of those situations, I don't think, based on what Quinn said,
like Chicago last year.
Remember, the Chicago situation last year was he was listed as questionable,
but did not practice during that week leading up to the Bears game,
but ended up playing on Sunday.
So, yeah, I mean, they made that call on game day.
doesn't sound like they're going to make the call this time on game day.
I was listening to this.
We played it live, the Quinn Press conference on my radio show.
My hunch, listening to him get to that answer really quickly about needing to be practicing this week,
needing a practice this week to play on Sunday.
I think I immediately thought he's not playing on Sunday.
I don't know what made me think that.
It was just that Quinn got to it so quickly.
like, yeah, this isn't going to be like last year with the rib injury, you know, where we took
it all week, didn't practice, put him on the injury report as questionable and then made the
decision Sunday he was good to go. Because, you know, that was a pain threshold thing. This is
a knee. And I just got this sense that he's not playing. If he's 100% and he practices on Friday,
I am in the camp of he absolutely should play. What are you waiting for? I mean, if he's 100% now,
play him. If he's not 100%
week three, no, don't play
him. I just had this
hunch he wasn't
going to play when I heard
Quinn answer it the way he answered
it. Now there could be a miraculous recovery
between now and Friday and he practices
Friday and he's ready to go. I'm going to guess that he's not going to practice
tomorrow. On the injury
report today, in addition
to Jaden not practicing,
no John Bates, no Noah
Brown. Now, Zach Ertz, Von Miller, and Laramie Tunsell also were out, but that was for their
rest day, veteran rest day. They didn't practice today. Noah Brown's groin and John Bates's
groin did not practice both of those players. There is a belief that both of those players
will be out when the Friday injury report hits. Limited today, Trey Amos, Brandon Coleman,
Jeremy McNichols and Colson Yankoff, the tight end with a hip.
I think it's going to be really interesting to watch the tight end situation on Sunday.
Does Ben Sennett get all of John Bates' snaps?
He's the guy that can actually be a blocking tight end.
Colson Yankoff can't.
He's more of a receiver as a tight end.
I mean, he's 215 pounds.
Ben Sinit's a big dude.
He should be able to handle that,
but what if he isn't in there handling that?
That is an indictment on Ben Senate.
His snap count on Sunday will be very, very telling.
The team put another player on injured reserve.
Cornerback Jonathan Jones went to injured reserve.
There is a belief that after four weeks he could come back.
The team then went out and signed Preston Smith.
Yes, that Preston Smith, drafted by our team in 2015 in the second round,
eventually signed this massive deal with the Packers, very successful career in Green Bay,
and then was traded to the Steelers last year at the trade deadline because the defense that Hathley
coordinated in Green Bay was a base 4-3.
He liked being an outside 3-4 backer, which is what the defense was before Halfley.
He got traded to Pittsburgh was a 3-4 outside.
side linebacker, but Pittsburgh cut him when the season was over. He had not signed with anybody.
Quinn said that he had been keeping an eye on Preston Smith, kind of, you know,
implying that he's always been a Preston Smith fan, had never had the opportunity to coach him.
But with Wise gone, Preston Smith comes in. Keep in mind, though, this is a base 4-3.
Now, the base 4-3 for this team, it's not like these guys are always in a three-point stance.
especially on pass downs, and they move them around.
You know, the wise loss is going to be an interesting loss.
Preston Smith will have a chance to play that position.
Keep an eye on Javan Kinlaw and his versatility to play end rather than inside.
Pain can do it too.
They also obviously have, you know, Jalen Holmes, who they brought back, you know, John Baptiste,
and they've got Jacob Martin.
But Martin's really, you know, more of a pass rusher than he is a runstopper.
I'm talking more on run-stopping downs.
Kinlaw, maybe, outside.
Yeah.
Wise is a big loss.
So is Eccler.
So is in the short term, Noah Brown and John Bates.
But Preston Smith back.
His best year was his first year in Green Bay when he had 12 sacks.
He had not, that was in 2019.
He had nine sacks in 20s.
21, 8 and a half in 2020, 8 in 2020, 3. And then last year in his nine games in Green Bay,
eight in Pittsburgh, he had four and a half sacks. So it sounds like they had an eye on him
all along and didn't pull the trigger. They went with WISE instead. One last Quinn soundbite
that I want to play for you. This was another Nikki Javala question. It was about something we've
talked about this week, and that is Josh Connerly, Jr.
And his struggles in the first two games.
Here's the question you'll hear Quinn's answer.
And then for the O-line, you know, after watching the tape, what's your general assessment
of where Connerley is at?
And is there any consideration on using Wiley at either guard or top on the right side?
I think we want to stick to the, you know, competition is the central theme and what we do.
If I'm looking at two games, there's things that I also liked, you know, in the opening game,
we ran the ball well and effectively into the,
that space. So, yeah, we've got things to improve on for sure, not just at one spot, but at a number
of them. And we plan on doing that. Competition is the essential theme. Okay, so it's competition
and the best man wins. But then there at the end when he said, we've got things to improve on
for sure, not just at one spot, but at a number of them, and we plan on doing that. Perhaps a
signal that a change along the offensive line may be forthcoming.
for the game Sunday against the Raiders.
We shall see.
All right.
Steve Souter's part two, the breakdown of the Packers game as it pertains to the defensive
performance last Thursday night.
We'll get to that after these words from a few of our sponsors.

more or less.
Like last night in the Monday night game, I had under 49 and a half right.
yards for Aaron Jones in part because my guy Paul Chartian out of Minneapolis told me that
Jordan Mason was going to be a very big part of Minnesota's rush attack. I cashed on that one.
Aaron Jones had 44 yards rushing. I also went over Caleb Williams on passing yards,
218 and a half, and he threw for 210. So I didn't cash on that one, but it's so much fun to play.
and that's the example.
They give you numbers,

this same type of underwear for years, in my case, boxer briefs, same brand, same type for a long time,
well, not anymore for me. I want to tell you about skims for men.
something I've discovered recently. The softest underwear I've ever worn. I got a few pairs of the
five-inch boxer briefs so comfortable. No matter what you're doing from sitting in a chair in
your office to working out, they are so comfortable. They don't bunch up. They were made to
recover from every stretch. The fabric is cool to the touch and it just seems to mold to your body
and never loses its shape.
This is so different from the synthetic feeling I used to get from what I used to wear.
Skims is made with an undeniable soft midweight cotton that allows you to breathe.

All right, Steve Souter was with me the other day.
You guys loved him doing a film breakdown of Skins Packers.
He was so good,
but I kept part of it for,
today. And the part of it that I kept was his defensive film breakdowns. So he started with
sort of an overall summary of the defense, which I said leading into it, was not very good on
Thursday night. No, not good. And really secondary was the main downfall. I think the D-line
played admirable. I think that's evident in the run game, too. They weren't really run the
ball. Like I know Jacobs had under four yards of carry.
some of those yards are coming late in the game.
I think they, and it looked like a game plan early on,
was to try and force Green Bay to run the football.
And they did that.
I don't know, like the very first play, you heard,
you heard Jordan Love yell easy, easy at the flying scrimmage.
So they came out.
They had two plays called from the huddle,
and Washington shows a too high safety look.
And then as soon as they,
and then they, Jordan loved to audible into a run
because they're showing two high safeties.
But right before the snap of the ball,
you know, Will Harris flies down into the box.
So it's clearly we're showing you two.
We're going to roll into three because we want you to run into this eight-man box.
They did that the first two plays of the game.
It worked.
They got loved to call a run play and they ran into it.
And that looked like, okay, cool, this is going to be their game plan.
And I'm sure they're going to have some wrinkles.
But it stopped being that at some point.
And then they became really vanilla Washington did all-man coverage for the most part.
And obvious man coverage.
Packers caught on to it.
did a lot of plays where they're bringing players in motion across the formation and back,
and then just getting confirmation, right?
And Washington would just run with the receiver.
So Love thinks it's pre-snap, man.
You run the motion, you get the guy to follow him.
Now you've confirmed its man.
And cool, I know where my man route is.
And I have confidence in all of my receivers to win in man coverage, which they did over and over again.
So just easy pitch and catch for him for the most part.
Defensively, I think Joe Witt just, I don't know.
just no creativity.
The amount of creativity
always of praising the Packers
for their secondary
and what they were doing differently
and changing things up.
Nothing like that.
With Washington,
what you saw is what you got,
and for a quarterback like Thor Love
who, in my opinion,
is elite in the league.
That's just too easy.
You're making it way too easy for them.
And they just didn't have any chance.
They were really bad in play action,
the defense.
And specifically, Will Harris,
he struggled in play action all game.
I need you to point out this.
Go to, can you go to the play right after the grades down punt?
Mike Washington punted their first possession, I think, was it gets down to like before.
Okay.
Hold on, I'll find it.
Yeah, the very first play I'll talk you through.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
I got it right now.
I got it right now.
All right.
So this is so crappy by Love, what I want you to see Love do.
Love looks at Golden on his left, his near-side receiver.
He looks at Golden, and then he points to Will Harris.
and then he motions Golden to come in.
And when you see that, it's because they don't think Golden can get to Harris to block him from his split.
So you see this all the time.
You'll see the quarterback to point out the safety,
and then that receiver comes into the line of scrimmage so he can get to the safety to block him.
Well, it's all dummy.
It's so crappy.
It's a trick.
They point to Will Harris.
Golden comes in, and he lines up behind craft.
He's almost in the back of like a wing.
Yeah.
And Will Harris, Will Harris is like, oh, I got this.
This is a run.
He brought him in here to block me.
So he full speed tries to attack Golden.
Who's not blocking?
He's leaving on a route.
Harris is supposed to be Guard Kraft, but he's not because you think he's trying to take
on an Iso block from the receiver.
And Kraft just shoots out to the flat and he gets 15 yards on the first play when they're backed up on the four.
And now you've got a fresh set of downs and you're out of the end of them.
It's so crafty by loving them.
Well, what's so fascinating in watching this as you're describing it is
Harris is like, wait a minute, what happened to Golden? Where's the run? Yeah. He's like,
where did he go? Yeah, he's like, what just happened? I thought this was definitely run. Oh, yeah. That's, that's really,
that's interesting. Crassy, crappy by loving them. And so now, I don't know if you'll be able to find
this, but go to quarter to eight minutes and 43 seconds, and it's second and 11. I got it.
and it's another, it's another big pass to Kraft.
And now that I killed Harris on my score.
This is because it's the same play.
It's the exact same formation.
They bring Golden in right inside Kraft, and he falls for it again.
And then he gets so mad he falls where he flies out to go get crap because he knows he screwed up.
And he misses tackle, and then Kraft gets 15 yards and gets a touchdown.
And I pointed out because you don't ever see a receiver come in and line up right next to craft like that.
that formation is very specific, and you just saw it,
and it should have been seared in your brain,
and you got goofed on it the first time,
and they get you on it again.
Yeah, he's looking for the run again.
And then he's like, we're golden go.
And then to your point, so instead of being in the backfield
like he was on the first one,
he tries to get out to Kraft,
and that's the play, for those of you that are listening,
where literally Kraft just throws Harris off of him.
him.
Throw them.
Yeah, so he's not responsible for Golden on either play.
He's responsible for crap on both of them.
And he just, and he just misses it both times.
I mean, I get the first one kind of, because I mean, that love is crafty.
They point to him.
It's like, oh, yeah, he thinks he's going to make a play, but, you know, just not paying
attention to his keys, gets overzealous and he looks like a fool.
But to do it to him again, that one, I just can't excuse that.
All right, so.
Because it's so special of a formation, you should have recognized it.
All right, let's get.
Let's get.
I mean, I just wanted to point out.
No, this is really good stuff.
All right.
So three highest-rated defensive players, three lowest?
Three highest, all going to be on the defensive line.
I think Kinlo was the best player on the field, defensively, throughout the entire game.
Then, followed by Armstrong, did a good job at DM, made players when he was.
unblocked. They tried to read him, crashed down. I got some pressures on love more so than
anybody else did. And then, let's see, and then Goldman, another D-Lyman, he comes in three for my
three highest. I take one thing to note that was just evident while I was watching.
Like Bobby Wagner and Frankie, is it Louvre? They don't, they never come off the field.
Like they never come off the field. They're on every play, every snap. And that's, that,
that's going to bite him at some point. I mean, he tests. He can't, he can't.
can't ask him to play that many plays.
I'm assuming it'll be like that all season unless something happens.
But that was just evident when I'm going like, man, Bobby's on the field again.
Loo's on the field again.
Now, Louu's on the field again.
Now, Louvo looks really versatile.
I like him on the line, scrimmage, doing some things, you know, that he can rush, he can cover.
He played pretty good.
He wasn't my highest of my career, but I liked him out there on the field.
Shame of Bobby.
He played a really good game other than two plays.
And the two plays, he didn't play well.
Love found him on both.
One was that they were in 13 personnel and crafted that theme.
And you see Bobby throwing his hand up, like, who's supposed to guard him.
But it was him.
I mean, he's not in man coverage on him, but that's his own.
He should drop off.
He's going to get complete anyway.
But he just was out of position.
And then there's another play in man coverage.
So this was the one time Washington tried to pass off the motion instead of having
Latimore run all the way across the field with him.
Everybody just start yelling and passing it down.
well Bobby is the only one they didn't pass it to
well they passed it but he didn't get in
that was that big 33 yard pass to
a hard grove over the middle
that that was Bobby's guy
Musgrave nobody's covered in Musgrave yeah I'm sorry
Musgrave yeah right Musgrave does that big 33
yarder that that was supposed to be Bobby but
everybody else switched and he didn't switch to the right guy
I think he still he ended up just dropping back in zone
because he didn't know who he's supposed to cover
so everybody else is in man except him
so that was his blunderer and and again
and that the one big play to craft, he could have dropped deeper in his own,
and then he doesn't do the coverage there on and love finds it.
So other than that, he had a pretty solid game.
Obviously, he's a solid player.
The one thing.
Those are three highs.
So Ken Law, Armstrong, and Goldman.
By the way, you know, I noticed in the opener,
and I didn't spend a lot of time looking at the defense in this game,
but they, you know, Armstrong is really versatile.
They line them up everywhere.
And I didn't even look to see, you know, all the,
different spots they lined them up. Goldman, did they play any five-man front or any kind of
three-four with Goldman as the nose? A couple times. I mean, you only had 26 plays versus,
let's say, Kenlaw had 43 to 26 for Goldman, so not in there a lot. I wanted to see him. I get why
when you put them in and why you don't put them in. But the Packers did enough 13 and 12 personnel
where you could get away with throwing them in there and just giving you guys a lot.
break a little bit because he wasn't when he was in he was he was playing well wasn't like he you
could see some guys like in the secondary like sans transfer still sandrissile yeah but he had a bad
first second quarter he's by play action he gave up on that route to read that they called back
the touchdown he broke his car he just gave up on the route but so he's on a position to make a play
there he was losing it in play action and then you saw all least i did i saw you know watching all
22, Jonathan Jones comes in for like a stretch of, you know, 15 plays, and I don't see Sandra still as much.
And it's, I think, because they saw the same thing I was seeing where he was ineffective for the first two quarters.
Then he started coming back in the end of the game.
He must have, you know, talk to him and try to tell him to settle down.
But the secondary was where all the issues were for me.
I mean, the obvious Marcion and Lattimore just had a rough game.
Once they identified man coverage, they were looking his way.
He didn't do anything to really make love want to go anywhere else.
But him and man coverage, a penalty on the one holding where it would have turned it into a second and 11, and they get a new set of downs.
And he just struggled there from a coverage standpoint.
I couldn't even really, I mean, I gave him, did I even give him any positive plays?
You know, a couple, I would say, coverage sack.
So he was covering his guy.
But for the most part, if they wanted to throw the ball out of him or they threw it on him.
So him and Will Harris tied for my lowest grades on defense.
and it's Will Harris is because of how egregious I think some of those plays were in play
action where he gave up big plays and just foolish and then it was Sandra still he was he was
my third loss so three in the secondary my fourth lowest is in the secondary too of Juan
Martin yeah so that's where most of the issues were and you can say they didn't get much
pressure up front to help them but a lot of it was the Packers offensive scheme I mean I was
impressed there. I like the way
they attack, try to take chunks.
Love is a go for the kill
style guy. I mean, he's taking shots.
The Golden Boy looks
like that speed is real. It shows up
on film. It's not a 4-2 that
you don't see on the field. And once they figure
out that relationship between him and
love and connect with some of them deep balls, he's going to
be a problem if he's not already.
I mean, he missed, he overthrew him on one.
Yeah, right. They're going to
he's going to get
downfield quite a lot this year and it's
love you hit up. They're going to be making some big, big plays. I know that the past that he was a
toe tap on the sideline. It's a great catch. It's an unbelievable ball. Love is getting hit, too.
And Latimore loses phase in his coverage when he looks back for the football to see if the
ball's coming to come in. He's got, he's covered. And he's kind of wall onto the sideline. But the second
he looks back, say, just to like make a check, is the ball coming this way? He loses phase with him.
and then that's when he can get extra separation.
He makes that catch.
But it's a 10 out of 10 football to a 10 out of 10 catch.
But Latimore could have been in some better position
to make that a little harder
because he shouldn't have looked back for the balls.
Or he did.
But it was just secondary issues.
And I said it, but I was so impressed after the game,
like breaking down the footage of Jordan Love.
And it was any time there was a mistake out in the secondary.
He found it, isolated it,
and took advantage of it.
And some of it was just too easy.
Like, big a third and three.
And is it must be?
Sorry, the tight end?
Yeah.
They bring them in motion.
Yeah.
They bring them in motion, and Sandra still follows it.
And then they turn around them with them back in motion,
back where they came.
And it's a classic, we would call it speed rub.
So I run the motion.
I see I got manned coverage.
Then I'm going to whip back and start my motion back towards it.
You're going to hike the ball, right?
When I'm like off the butt of the tight end or the next receiver,
I'm going to use it as a built-in rub, and I'm going to be open because it's man coverage.
Well, easy.
It's third and three.
They run that play.
Sanders still comes in motion and follows them, so love with his man coverage.
You don't have to do anything else.
This is just a built-in for a down.
It's just too easy.
And in the second half, third and fourth quarter, just no adjustments by the defensive coordinator in Washington,
not trying to trick, really not trying to trick love at all.
In the secondary, just stuck with some basic man coverage.
They looked, watched them.
They looked as vanilla as the Giants did, week one when I was watching a film against them.
So they need to, you got to, at some point, you got to say, I'm going to show you a cover three and roll a cover two in some crazy situation.
Or I'm going to bring a blitz that we haven't seen all night.
And I'm going to try to get to you, but not the case.
Too easy.
This was awesome.
I do have to ask you, though, since you made your, you know,
your name in college football as a returner.
What did you think of Debo's return to start the second half?
So, I know what?
I want to ask you this, actually.
I thought about, I want to flip this question back to you.
What are your thoughts on Debo as a fan of the team being the kick return?
And I'm not trying to set you up here.
I would say, when he did the return, I'm like, that's what Devo does.
But then watching this all 22, if Debo,
He both goes down and he goes down because it's a kickoff return.
I don't know where you're going to find some more dynamic plays on offense.
So I'm worried.
I get it that he can make plays for you there.
But based on why just watching it to Packers,
you know, there's nobody else on the offense other than Jayne is going to make a play.
So I don't, I don't want to see you lose them.
So the new kickoff rules in the NFL, all right, the, where, you know,
the kick coverage unit
lines up at the 40. They're not
starting at the 35 with a
you know, that would be a
25 yard running start
to where they are now, you know, a bit more
like a 50 yard, you know, heads
running start
to the returner
there. Teams are treating
the kickoff return
as much more of a line of
scrimmage play than a return.
You'll notice
a lot of teams have
starting running back, starting wide receivers back there, rather than true return guys,
whoever they're using on a punt return, because they view it to be a lot less safe as a line
of scrimmage play than a typical return. So that's my answer. I noticed it last year when,
first of all, everybody's got two returners back there because they've got to hit it in that landing zone.
so you've got to cover that space.
I'm okay with it.
Quinn was asked about this last week,
and he said the play,
he didn't go into the detail that I just went into,
but I think if he had decided to go into the detail,
that's what he would have said.
He just said the play is much different than it was two years ago,
and we feel comfortable with Debo back there.
What I would argue, well, maybe I'd argue,
I'll just supply some other information.
McCaffrey's not that.
That's not him, but he's back there.
He's not that type of running back style kind of guy,
player to be back there.
And I know he's not the main dude.
Devo tries to anticipate where the ball is going.
He becomes the main return.
But then that means your turn to McCaffrey into elite blocker.
Yeah.
He's not a lead blocker.
I don't know why McCaffer.
I can't answer that because I haven't seen enough of McCaffrey as a pro.
They did last year, they had Chris Rodriguez back there.
They had Austin Echler back there until he was concussed for the second time.
So they had running backs, you know, back on kickoff returns.
Now, they changed the rule again.
I don't know if you know this.
Now touchbacks come out to the 35 instead of the 30.
And the rate of returns through two weeks is extraordinarily high.
Highest ever.
It's like 70-something percent of the kickoffs are being returned.
And last year was more like in the 30s.
Teams were still kicking it through the end zone and saying,
go ahead, take it at the 30.
But now they're like, we don't want you to start at the 35.
So I mean, I get it.
I get the conundrum you be in as a coach.
Do I put Debo back there?
He's one of our, if not our most dynamic guy with the ball and his hands.
And it doesn't have to be a concussion.
I mean, you can pleak an ankle just getting tackled there.
It's just another play.
you want to expose him to a tackle
because I think you're going to lose
so much on offense if you don't have
them. I just throw it out there.
It's fair. And Debo's struggled with injuries,
you know, the last few years.
Right. You know.
So is it worth risking in there? That's all.
Yeah. You know.
I like laying at punt return. I'll say that. I think you look good.
Return the punt. Yeah. You know.
You didn't look great at receiver, but
I think that at this point,
you should never take a kickoff out of your end zone.
I think you take the 35.
You take the 35.
I would agree with that.
And Debo's returned a couple of kicks now from about a yard deep in the end zone.
And I think it's because the other night, he's like, we got to make a play here.
We got to something's got to happen.
You know, actually, one more here, because everybody listening to this,
they've heard you be, you know, construct.
constructively critical of Terry in this game, Terry McLaurin.
I didn't ask you for a grade on him.
He was not among your three lowest grades.
But, I mean, you made a comment earlier, and I just shot it down.
You said he's running like 4-7 now.
That's not true, right?
That's an exaggeration.
It's not, I mean, not this game against the Packers.
Okay.
He just looked like a shell of himself.
Now, you're running against zone coverage, so I get it.
his own covers, you don't always put burners on
because you're trying to get into a hole, you're trying to get
to the spot. But it's just
I'm telling you, it just didn't look good.
A couple of times, like, if he hurt?
I mean, does he, is, like, you have a
Well, he didn't have, he didn't have a training camp.
You know, he held out basically the entire training camp.
Like, he's just, he was just a guy
Thursday night.
Okay.
If he didn't make that behind, like,
it was a little behind it, and when he was dragging across
the formation, and he tipped it, and he bought it for,
first down. If he didn't do that, would he even know when he played? I mean, I hate to be
that in the line, but when you want, like, it's third and, it's fourth and, or third and fourth or four,
and he wasn't even on the field. He was not, he was not on the field on that slant to Jayland,
to Lane, was he? Yeah, yeah. Like, why aren't he even on the field? I mean, I guess you're
tired, or maybe, you can't tell me the coach pulled him to say, we want Lane to run this
slant because he so good at him because that was not the case. He didn't.
threatened mixing up the field at all.
It was an easy breakup.
So what's going on there?
I didn't see, I mean, granted,
he only got a couple chances to win in man coverage
because they played a lot of zone, but when he did,
he didn't.
The only time, I mean, sorry, he did win on that deep corner,
but excuse me, come back with Jay didn't throw it to
that we went over that play.
But other than that, that was like the only time
he looked like he was the number one read and got open.
And it just, I don't know, man,
just the guy just wasn't.
and it could have had off night, but like him, Zach Gertz, he just looked like, you know,
he looks like his age. He looks like his age. I don't want to be.
The fourth and four, Terry's been a good contested catch guy.
He's not, just so everybody heard that. On the fourth and four, fourth quarter, they're down 24 to 10,
and they went for it from their own 40-something yard line.
Terry's not on the field
and they run the slant to the rookie lane
and it's not really even close
because he'd, by the way, I thought
25 the corner for them
who I'd never heard of Nixon.
I thought he played really well.
Me too. I texted
a buddy on my mind that said Nixon
looks all pro during the game.
It goes back to
your building confidence as a corner
throughout the game when you're
seeing that your defense is getting pressure.
on Jayden and Jayden, and I can just get more and more aggressive, and I can squat and squat
more and more because I know you don't have time to run a double move on me. You don't have time
to hit me on. I don't have time to run a slug-o. So I'm just going to stand to sticks,
or I'm going to stand at eight yards, and your route is most likely going to break there
because you have to. So I just look more and more better as the day goes on, and I'm taking more
and more risk. And my front seven's making me right. And it's that, I mean, I could just imagine
a corner what a game to play in because you're just, I mean, yeah. You got all the confidence.
Yeah, you just like, this is awesome. I mean, you got zone and covered too. Yeah. And you know what?
Maybe, maybe with the four and seven in coverage, if Washington had lined it up and said,
you know, we are going to run it and we're going to even run some draws, maybe the four would
stop the run too.
And then, because the Eagles basically did that a lot last year.
You know, they, they, Vic Fangio hates to blitz, although he blitzed a ton against Kansas
City.
And he's caught, you know, when you have that kind of talent, and you can stop the run without
loading the box and get pressure without adding an extra.
Yeah.
Yeah, it's hard to, it's hard to win.
It is.
This was awesome, man.
Great job.
Let's do it again next week after the Raiders game.
Thanks a lot, man.
Had it fun.
Steve Suter, everybody.
I know you guys enjoyed it the other day.
Hopefully you enjoyed it.
Today I did.
Up next, Tim Murray will jump on.
We'll do some college football
and we'll get his thoughts on Malik Washington,
Maryland's highly touted true freshman quarterback
and what Timmy thinks of Malik so far.
That's next after these words from a few of our sponsors.

Joining me right now, my good friend Tim Murray,
to talk a little college football.
to finish up the show.
College football already entering week four.
Crazy.
But yeah, we've got a pretty good card this weekend, not like last weekend.
That Georgia Tennessee game was off the charts.
That's for sure.
We had A&M, Notre Dame.
I know Timmy's hurting from that loss.
And maybe it shouldn't have happened on that last game-winning touchdown pass.
We can get into that.
But Tim, of course, is out in Vegas, has been for several years now.
He is the host of Vizan's college football tailgate show Saturday mornings 9 a.m. Eastern, which you can watch locally on Masson.
He hosts Vizan Primetime on the Vizen Network 7 p.m. Eastern weeknights, and his college football betting podcast is doing very well.
It's called the Vizen College Football.
betting podcast. You can follow Tim on X on Twitter at one Tim Murray. Maybe that's where we should start
last week. Tim's a huge Notre Dame guy. I think that may have been holding on the game winning touchdown.
Yeah, I don't know if you're allowed to tackle a defensive tackle from behind, but you know,
it's funny. I was texting with a couple of beat reporters I've become friendly with over the years.
and the common thought, Kevin, regarding that, was, you know, okay, they win that game.
Do you really believe that this is a playoff team?
Is this a national championship team?
And right now, you have to say no based off of their defense.
You know, I'm excited about what I've seen offensively, and we could talk about Miami.
I went down to the Notre Dame Miami game to start the season.
But, man, you talk about losing a coach and how much that can change things,
and Notre Dame lost just that.
They lost Al Golden.
Your defensive coordinator, he goes to Cincinnati, Kevin,
and Marcus Freeman, it looks like, made a bad hire.
He hired Chris Ash, a former defensive coordinator,
former head coach at Rutgers,
and he was in the NFL for a couple of years most recently,
and it just doesn't look like, you know,
that's the same defense that we saw these past couple of years.
But, yeah, that was a disappointing result, no doubt,
and, you know, we'll see how they respond.
You know, Notre Dame and Clemson,
I would say certainly the two more disappointing teams to start the year with two early losses.
So let's talk about, you know, these first three weeks and, you know, what you think you've learned from the first three weeks.
You just mentioned a big one. Clemson's not very good. And I had, you know, very much a strong opinion about Cade Clubnick.
Last year and with Stanford, Steve, before this season started, I just didn't get it. I don't, I didn't
see him as a Heisman trophy
winner. I didn't see him as a very high
draft pick in April.
A lot of different reasons, but he
has started off so poorly.
And Clemson really looks bad here
early in the season. So that's one of the big
takeaways from the first three weeks.
Notre Dame as well.
Give me a few others from the first three weeks.
What have you focused on your college
football conversations?
Well, I think if we're going to start positively, and I know for anyone who follows this
board or bets this board like you and I do, betting and trusting in Mario Cristobal is a
dangerous proposition because he's going to mess things up.
I mean, his track record is just that.
You look at their game against Syracuse late last year.
They're down seven.
He kicked the field goal to cut it to four, and they don't get the ball back.
And they had Cam Ward.
but what they've done with that roster, Kevin, down in Miami is really impressive.
And they went in on Carson Beck, and that was a by-low opportunity on a player that I think a lot of people were out on.
And you look at what is on that roster right now, and we'll start up front.
I mean, they got some badass dudes on that offensive line and on that defensive line.
Ruben Bain is a name you need to know.
He's a guy that could be a first round pick.
He's an absolute monster defensively for Miami.
And here's the thing that Mario Cristobal has a lot of fault from an in-game coaching standpoint.
Yeah, he does.
But that's where I'm very hesitant regarding Miami and trusting them because I can't trust Mario Cristobal.
But he's got two very good coordinators.
Shannon Dawson proved it a year ago.
He can scheme it up as good as anyone from an offensive standpoint.
And then he went out and got Corey Heatherman from Minnesota, and the defense looks completely different from a year ago.
Brought in a bunch of transfers, and they have so far hit.
And, you know, this is a Miami team that you look at some of the weapons they have.
Malachi Tony, he's this 17-year-old beecher that had a couple of big plays against Notre Dame.
The big catch by C.J. Daniels against the Irish as well, the one-handed O'Dell Beckham-style catch.
And then against U.S. F. last week, they just leaned in on Marlon.
Mark Fletcher, they're running back, and he ran all over that defense.
So, look, last year, this was a Miami team that had Cam Ward, the number one overall
pick, Damien Martinez, and NFL running back, and their top six wide receivers all
departed the program, and they might be better offensively.
You know, Carson Beck's not Cam Ward, but I think Miami has been one of the bigger
surprises so far, and we'll find out.
I think you and I, the way that we bet, will probably look to back Florida this.
weekend as a seven and a half point underdog at Miami. But Miami has certainly, you know,
looked apart so far this year. And then, you know, Kevin, I think a big thing is to know when
you're right and when you're wrong. And I didn't say I was anti-John Matere. I just wanted to
see it. And this dude, the transfer quarterback from Washington State, he goes to Oklahoma,
he comes with his offensive coordinator, Ben Arbuckle. And that performance we saw against Michigan
was really impressive by him.
And then Brent Venables is a defensive guy.
You speak about Clemson, right?
They lost Brent Venables,
Cigobo, head coach of Oklahoma.
It hasn't really hit yet.
Right now it feels like it's hitting.
And this is going to be a big, big spot here
for the Sooners this weekend because it's a big revenge game.
Oklahoma's facing their former quarterback, Jackson Arnold.
Jackson Arnold was a massive recruit, Kevin,
and he just didn't really click at Oklahoma,
and they go out and they get John Mateer.
This is an enormous game this weekend down in Norman,
them taking on Auburn.
But so far, John Mateer looks like the absolute real deal.
A true dual threat quarterback will take a lick.
If you look back at that Michigan game, Kevin,
he ran the ball in that game 19 times for 74 yards and two touchdown.
So I think to me, two of the more impressive teams we've seen so far this year
have been Miami in Oklahoma.
So Miami, let me just say that two weeks ago, I said Carson Beck's going to win the
Heisman Trophy.
And I liked Carson Beck.
And I know that there are a lot of issues with Carson Beck, okay?
There are a lot of the intangible things, the locker room things, the culture things
that a lot of people are concerned about when it comes to Carson Beck.
But I said this last year when, you know, the last couple of years of Georgia, I'm like,
he can stand in the pocket and he can throw it.
He looks the part to me.
You know, sometimes that's it for me in college.
Like they look like they should be playing at the next level.
And I watched that, you know, I watched that game against Notre Dame and I'm like,
this team is really good around them and this guy is going to have a monster year.
Now, with that said, this line reeks.
You know, I had, I gave out Miami.
last week because they were giving the huge number to South Florida,
who had just upset Florida. Florida should have covered at LSU Saturday night.
And now Florida is going, is playing Miami and they're catching just seven to seven and a half.
So this is a tricky spot.
By the way, then Miami gets Florida State.
And then Miami gets Louisville.
And that combination of Jeff Brom and Miller Moss to me is an interesting.
one in the ACC. We'll see how it pans out because I think Moss has some talent and I think
Jeff Brom is brilliant. But your other thing, Mathier, I'm going to be honest with you, I had no
idea that he was this good until I watched the Michigan game. He is, I don't know if he'll ever
be good at the next level because he's short, right? What's his height? Five, ten, six feet?
Yeah, they probably lift him at like six foot, but, you know, and look, I live in the
West Coast, right? I live in the Pacific time zone. So I watched a lot of Washington
State, and I'm sicko, and I watch, and I bet those games. And the question I had coming into
this year was, if you looked at the numbers, Kevin, from a tier, he really lit up pretty crappy
competition in the Mountain West. And when he stepped up a level, it didn't really correlate.
And that's what I just kind of had question all off season. And it's funny, our friend Stanford
Steve reached out to me and said, hey, why do you hate John Mateer? Very much tongue in cheek.
But I was like, I just want to see it.
Well, I've seen it so far.
Yeah.
And we're going to see it a lot more.
And here's the thing.
Like, I hope that his body can withstand it because he is a badass.
He is not going to avoid hit.
And the schedule still to come, Auburn, Texas, Ole Miss, Tennessee, Alabama, Missouri, LSU.
Yeah.
Like, they also play South Carolina at Williams-Brice.
I know they're a little bit, you know, banged up right now.
And Lenore Sellers dealing with the head injury.
But, like, they're hard.
no easy spots for Oklahoma. So they're going to be really nicked up and you hope that he can
sustain 15, 17 runs a game. But he's a legit badass man. And that defense is real. That
defense is real down there, Norman. Yeah, it's kind of weird, but because they've had a couple
of tough years here recently, having Oklahoma back being really good and with a Heisman candidate,
it. I'm kind of into it a little bit, but I think this is a tricky game Saturday against
Auburn based on the number. But yeah, Mateer is so impressive. For those of you that are just
kind of following it from the, you know, from sort of outside periphery, Mattier's such an
entertaining player to watch. I just looked it up. He's 6-1-224. He does not play like a 6'1 quarterback,
but there's a lot of Mansell, Baker Mayfield, Doug Flutie,
there's just a lot of, you know, gamer in him.
And at the college level, he's outstanding.
I don't know what he'll be at the next level,
but he really looks like an outstanding college quarterback.
But what do you, look, Carson Beck is now the favorite two weeks after I said,
I think he's going to win the Heisman trophy.
what do you think of Beck and the season he is on the verge of having?
And then my other prediction with Beck is that he's ultimately going to be the first
quarterback taken in the NFL draft unless he's just an absolute a-hole,
which apparently there is a lot of discussion that this guy's not easy at all.
Yeah.
Well, it's funny.
I had on Drew Butler, who works down in Atlanta and played at Georgia.
over the summer, and you could tell he didn't say it outright, but he was like, yeah, you know,
there was an offer extended, but it was kind of like, we're good, you know, let's split ties here.
Yeah.
And you remember last year when he got hurt in the SEC championship game and Gunner Stockton came in,
the narrative going into the Notre Dame Sugar Bowl was, we upgraded at quarterback.
Well, they didn't.
And an article came out this summer that I thought was fascinating.
regarding Carson Beck, which was, it was a blind resume. David Hale did this article over the summer
at ESPN, and his numbers were identical to Garrett Nuffler. And, you know, Georgia really didn't have
great playmakers a year ago, which is stunning, but they didn't. And they upgraded at those
playmaker positions. You saw it on Saturday, and that shootout down in Knoxville. Look, I think
Carson Beck's a really good quarterback, man, and he's got weapons around him. He's got an elite
offensive line. And, you know, Notre Dame, I think, got questions. And they can run the football.
And they can run the football, Kevin. And they've, and, you know, all you've heard is he's, you know,
he's re-found his love for the game. He's having fun. So, I don't know. Look, you mentioned those
three games. Miami's not going undefeated in all three of those games. I would be surprised.
Now, I still think they make the playoffs, but you've got Florida this week by week, at Florida
State by week, Friday night.
game against Louisville. I think they trip up
probably in one of those games,
but I still think they're a playoff team, and then the rest
of the schedule is an absolute joke.
Yeah, it is. So yeah, I think Carson Beck is
very good. Could he win the Heisman?
Absolutely. I think the Heisman discussion
is wildly entertaining right now
because you look at, we haven't
mentioned Arch Manning.
Arch Manning has been a massive disappointment
so far. Yeah. And, you know,
is it his fault that he got all
this hype? No. It's his last name.
It's his uncles. It's his dad. It's his grandfinding.
et cetera. He was the betting favorite coming into the year. And a lot of it was to do, Kevin,
and you understand this, but your listeners might not be too familiar. Look, the house was just
recognizing, hey, he plays for Texas, he's Archmanning, he's a quarterback. We're going to make
him the betting favorite of the preseason number one team in the country. And now Archman
has dropped quite considerably in the, you know, Heisman market all the way down to, I want to
double-check this. He's like 40 to 1, 35-1.
And look, last week against U-TEP, it was not that impressive.
Now, I think Texas certainly can get out of this hole.
They have enough talent to do so.
You know, a couple guys that I'm curious about, look, one quarterback that I love,
and I loved them preseason, and he was very way under the radar.
He's going to be in that big noon kickoff this weekend.
He's Devin Dampere.
He's a transfer from Mexico.
He came in similarly to John Mateer with his offensive coordinator.
And a couple of things that I said about this Utah's team.
team entering this year, Kevin was this.
They have an elite offensive line.
They've been so ridiculously
banged up at the quarterback position
for years and years and years
that it's hindered them.
And then you love Kyle Whittingham.
I think most people do.
He was not going to go out with a
five and seven football team. That's just not who he
is. They've got a badass defense.
I think Dan Peer's a very fascinating
player. He certainly could
jump up the Heisman numbers this
weekend if they beat Texas Tech.
And I'll say this, Kevin, Ty Simpson really had a poor debut against Florida State.
It was not a good performance by the Alabama quarterback.
And so far since then, you know, they played U.L. Monroe, whatever.
And then they played Wisconsin last week, and he was great against Wisconsin.
And in two weeks, I think Ty Simpson's number could shorten considerably if Alabama goes between the hedges and puts up a big number and maybe beat Georgia.
So I'm not out yet on Ty Simpson at Alabama.
Me neither. Totally agree with you.
Really, even in that loss, I thought that there was a lot to like about him.
But just, you didn't answer the second part of the Carson Beck thing.
Do you think?
Number one.
Yeah, look, that's a, that is so much more of a reach prediction for me than the Heisman
trophy because he's basically, you know, a day.
two, you know, late first round guy with a lot of the mocks that were out before the season started.
So he'd have to really jump up there.
But what do you think?
Because I don't think Nussmeyer should be the number one pick overall.
I think Nussmeier is just okay.
And not a big-time NFL starter.
In fact, I don't think he'll end up starting more games than he backs up in the NFL.
I wouldn't be surprised if Lenora Sellers ends up being the next one pick.
Okay, fair enough.
I just think the athleticism, the size, the arm strength, the intrigue of the South Carolina quarterback could catapult him.
I'll just give you what the betting market says.
And once again, I want to fully, you know, this is, look, when it comes to betting games,
there is an algorithm, there are power ratings, there's a system set in place by sportsbooks.
For the draft, there isn't a system, right? It's looking at mock draft. It's a getting
game. So don't take these for what they are, but they are actionable numbers. Garrett Nussmeyers,
the favorite, plus 350, Drew Aller, who I am not in on, plus 450,
Lenora Sellers 5 to 1, Archmanning 8 to 1, Kate Klubnick 9 to 1, John Mateer 10 to 1, Sam Leavitt of Arizona State 14 to 1, Fernando Mendoza of Indiana, 16 to 1.
I like him.
And Carson Beck's 16 to 1.
So if I had to put a- Bex character is a part of this evaluation, don't you think?
Sure.
Yeah, I think a lot of, look, he was the betting favorite to go number one last year.
I know.
You know?
Yeah.
People forget that.
So I think Carson Beck, you know, would I be stunned if he goes number one?
No.
I would probably put Sellers and Nussmeyer ahead of him.
But, you know, we'll find out more about Fernando Mendoza.
You know, he's the guy that is not a household name.
He was at Cal, very rangy, kind of lanky type of guy.
And look, Kirk Signetti, the former JMU coach now at Indiana, he's a big believer in
playing absolutely nobody to start the season.
So they've been off to the side, beating the crap out of random teams.
But they got a big one this weekend.
Well, they did beat Old Dominion who crushed Virginia Tech.
But just so everybody knows, the quarterback at Indiana is 6-5, 6-6, something like that,
and can really throw it.
His brother, by the way, is the backup.
All right, what I want to do here is I want to go through a few teams,
and I want you to tell me, as it relates to a playoff appearance,
you know, fraudulent or for real in terms of being in contention for that?
I'll start with Florida State.
I'll say fraudulent because their schedule does have some tricky spots on it.
They still have to go to Clemson.
They still have to play Miami.
I just, I don't know what Florida State is.
They've got the great win over Alabama.
They looked apart seven, but since then they had a buy week.
They played East Texas A&M, whatever the hell that is.
And then they played 10th state this week.
So I would say more of the to be determined, but I'll say fraudulent, but I could look
very dumb in two weeks if they go and beat Miami in Tallahassee.
Is this a real team for Brett Bielma at Illinois?
Can they make the playoff?
No, I don't think so.
I think this is a team.
If you talk to pro-betters and power people who make.
power ratings. This team is wildly
overrated. Well, we were all on Duke
two weeks ago. I know. And it didn't work.
We were all on Duke. Look, we were all on Duke
and I'm not going to make excuses for a losing bet because, you know, I was on Duke.
But when you go minus five in the turnover margin, it's hard to win football games
and when you're committing dumb penalties.
I just think, I think Illinois loses this
weekend. I think they're a good football team. I think we're getting a little
over our keys on saying that this is a playoff team.
So I'll say fraudulent because I think I look at their next two games, Kevin, and I think they lose both of them.
I think they lose the Indiana, and I think they lose the USC.
And look, the schedule, I'll just say this about the schedule for Illinois.
They're an underdog this week against Indiana.
I think they'll probably be an underdog close to a pick against USC, underdog against Ohio State,
and then they'll be an underdog when they go to Washington.
So I don't think they get out of there without three losses.
I'll say fraudulent when I come to the Illinois.
Georgia Tech.
Look at that schedule, Kevin.
Look at the schedule for Georgia Tech.
It is the
until Georgia.
Until Georgia.
What's the Wizard of Oz?
The Golden Road right there.
They have.
We're the Yellow Brick Road.
Yellow brick road.
Wake Forest, Virginia Tech, Duke,
could be tricky.
Syracuse, N.C. State.
Boston College just lost to Stanford.
and Pitt. Like Georgia Tech right now is plus 120 to make the ACC championship. I mean, this team,
I don't think they're a playoff team. I'm curious, here's what I'll say about Georgia Tech.
Under Brent Key, their head coach, they have been incredible in that underdog role. I believe the record
now against ranked teams, I want to say it's like nine and three against the spread. Like they are great
punching up. But now
they're going to be a favorite in
every single game, Kevin, until they
played Georgia. That's a new
role. And then you've got to wonder, too,
about Haynes King. This dude
just takes blow after blow.
He's a badass competitor.
You look at what he did last
week. He ran like 20-some
on time against
Clemson.
So you do wonder about the wear and tear,
but, look, Georgia, Texas, a really
good team, and they got a really good coach.
How about a couple of teams that maybe people are sleeping on?
I'll give you USC first.
Yes, real deal.
And you know that pains me as a Notre Dame fan.
They got a great defensive coordinator in DeAnon Lynn.
I think if you're UCLA, you make him say no.
I think that should be their next head coach.
Obviously, he's the son of Anthony Lynn.
He's incredible defensive mind.
And they got players, man.
And look, I am not a Lincoln Riley guy.
I think he bishes too much.
I think he whines all the time.
I don't love their quarterback in Maya.
He can really kind of throw the ball up a little bit for grabs.
But I think this is a team that people saw the record a year ago
and all the hype that was expected from them.
And they kind of rode them off.
I think USC's going to make some noise here.
They got some big games upcoming.
They got Illinois next week.
and then they have Michigan a couple weeks after that before they play Notre Dame.
So we'll find out what they really are.
But I think USC's got the talent, Kevin, to make the playoffs.
What about Vanderbilt?
I mean, I know the schedule.
I know the league.
I understand it.
But God, this kid can freaking play and they're well-coached.
Clark Lee is a coach that, you know, when he took the Vanderbilt job at his alma mater.
And, you know, people are like, all right, well, he'll coach there for three, four years.
years, and it'll probably get fired because that's what every coach does. And he's been incredible.
You know, and you got to give him a ton of credit Diego Pavia for those in the gambling world.
I mean, the dude is ain't 10 and 2 against his spread as an underdog. But they got, they actually
got some dudes. Like, you watch last week, and I know Lenora Sellers got hurt.
He got. That was no flute, man. No, they were the better team. By the way, there are two games that I
can't believe I didn't give out. Vandy and Stanford.
I was so close to giving out Stanford.
I just completely whiffed on Vanderbilt.
And even my offshore person said to me, I saw your picks.
How did you not give out Vanderbilt?
I'm like, I don't know.
I just missed it.
Back to Vanderbilt.
What's their best case this year?
How many wins?
Is it playoff worthy?
I don't think it is.
The schedule is just so rough.
They got to go to Alabama, home to LSU.
I think Missouri is a sneaky playoff contending team.
You got to go to Texas.
You play Auburn.
I know, look, Diego Pavi, I think, is 2-0 against Hugh Freeze.
You beat him when he was at New Mexico State, or maybe 3 in O, I don't know.
But there's some – I just – the schedule is brutal.
They're a play – look, I'll say this.
They're a bet-on team in the bowl season like they were last year when they beat Georgia Tech.
I'm curious how they do these next two weeks.
They did lose the Georgia State last year.
It's another one of those teams that do they get complacent after big wins over Virginia
Tech and South Carolina.
But they're a fun team.
And especially from a betting standpoint, Kevin, they're definitely a team you're going to want
to look the back as this year goes on.
But I'm with you.
I did not take Vanderbilt last week and I felt like an absolute dope.
I can't believe I didn't have Vanderbilt.
It felt too trendy.
We kind of get into this world of gambling, and we're like, oh, too many people like Georgia Tech.
Too many people like Tennessee.
And you kind of get in your own head sometimes.
Is this Lane Kiffin team good enough or not?
I'll say last week was pretty impressive.
I agree.
They lost their quarterback, Austin Simmons.
He came in for like a player to, but he was severely hampered with that ankle.
injury. And they, I mean, granted they were at home, but that Arkansas team can score, man.
Bobby Petrino is a really good offensive.
Always has.
They've got a, and they've got a QB and Tailing Green.
You might remember the name from Boise.
He's the big, he's the huge kid, yeah.
Athletic dude. And he's playing some really good football right now.
I don't like the spot next week for my Irish going to Arkansas.
That's a really tricky spot. I'll already tell you you'll probably be on Arkansas on that spot.
as a home dog, but I was impressed by what I saw from,
from Lane Squad with Chambles, the backup quarterback.
I thought he played it really well.
I want to say this real quickly.
This is kind of in the weeds,
and I know you have some Penn State folks that listen,
and you've got your son who went there.
I think it's kind of an indictment on Penn State
that this kid Harrison Wallace transferred out,
and now he's like balling out at Old Miss.
I don't know, man.
I just, there's something about Drew Aller that doesn't sit right with me.
And I don't know.
You heard all this crap spoken about the wide receivers last year for Penn State,
and they had no receptions in the Orange Bowl.
This kid Wallace is pretty good down there in Ole Miss, man.
He's a good player.
Yeah, just Penn State's just sitting there.
You know, Ohio State one, Penn State two.
You know, Ohio State, I gave out Ohio last week for the second straight week,
and they got it done. That game was like 16 to 9 in the third quarter. By the way, do you see the
Villanova cover against Penn State? Oh my gosh. All time. All time. So let me just explain to everybody.
Penn State was a 48 point favorite roughly over Villanova. They were up 52 to nothing. Basically,
Villanova had no chance to score until the very final drive of the game. 16 plays like
80 yards. They're down there with a fourth and goal at the Penn State 8, and the play is an insane
play and an insane catch in the back of the end zone as the clock winds to zero.
And they don't even kick the extra point. 52 to 6 they cover on the final play.
Did you see what the total was?
Was the total? No, I actually did. I knew.
Oh, my God. So it went over by a point.
All right, let's take a quick break.
We'll finish up with getting Tim's thoughts on Malik Washington, Maryland's new quarterback.
The Terps have their first road game this weekend at Wisconsin, and we'll get Tim's best plays of the week.
We'll do that after these words from a few of our sponsors.
We'll continue with a good friend Tim Murray in a segment sponsored by Windonation, 86690 Nation or Windonation.
If you need new windows, they've got a great deal going on right now.
It's the most popular deal they have all year long.
Buy two get too free with the option of paying nothing for two full years.
No money down, no payments, and no interest charged until the year 2027.
If you've been thinking about new windows, all I ask is give them a chance to come out
and give you a free in-home estimate.
86690 Nation
Window Nation.com.
Maryland's played nobody,
but what do you think so far of Malik
Washington?
I like him, man.
I like this kid.
I think he's the most talented
quarterback.
Is he the most talented quarterback
locks he's had at Maryland?
Oh, yeah.
I mean, Leah,
look, Leah had talent.
Leah was just small.
This guy has, you know,
next level potential
because of his size.
But Leah was a very good quarterback for Loxley.
I mean, they won seven, eight games a year for three straight years
and won three straight bowl games because they scored a lot of points
and because Leah put up, you know, literally program best numbers.
Now, at the end of his career, I didn't say that he was the best quarterback that ever played at Maryland.
He wasn't.
Boomer Assison holds that mantle.
And, you know, Scott McBrion would have been number two for me.
Bobby McBrion won a lot of football game.
Yeah, and then you could start to, you know, mention Leah in the, you know, Frank Reich Stan Gelbaugh sort of mode.
Yeah, but this kid is impressive.
They haven't played anybody.
It scares me because they are a 10-point underdog Saturday in Madison
against a Wisconsin team that is not really played well or looked that good.
Yeah, and the betting market is bet the crap out of Wisconsin.
Oh, yeah.
From seven to ten.
So, yeah, this is one of those sides.
I'm like, I don't know.
I mean, there's a desperate spot for Wisconsin.
Wisconsin, by the way, look at their schedule.
This is the only game where they're really going to be a significant favorite in Big Ten play.
They completely lost the schedule lottery this year.
Yeah.
But I like this kid, man.
And, you know, he's a baller.
I, you know, I'll say this, too.
Buzz Williams might want to look at him.
kid was a great basketball player.
It's balding. It's exciting.
And you know, I think, I guess I can't speak for you or the rest of Maryland fans,
but you do get a little worried. Like, this is a real deal quarterback, and you wonder,
is somebody going to kind of kick the tires and see if they can pull them out of Maryland at
some point, which is always the worry nowadays in college football. But hopefully him being in
his hometown, it's exciting to him. But like, look, I don't know if this is a
a bowl team this year, but I would say
having Malik Washington is a big reason to be excited.
I'm excited to watch the game. I think it's going to be a really
challenging path at Wisconsin.
I'll say this about Wisconsin. I think Wisconsin's quarterback is very
meh, whether it be Billy Edwards,
the former Maryland kid, or Daniel O'Neill,
the San Diego State kid, but
the defense is legit, and that's the worry
a little bit there. But, no, I've been impressed
about what I've seen from Malik and
hopefully puts on a
bit of a show on Saturday.
Give me your best bet for this weekend, Thursday, Friday, so.
All right.
I'll give you a couple that are kind of, you know, fit our characteristics here.
I'll probably be on Florida.
I wouldn't say that's the best set, but I'll probably end up on Florida.
I'll probably be on Auburn.
I'll give you a game that I like.
It's moved a little bit through the numbers, through Key of 7.
I think East Carolina might beat BYU.
this is going to be, and I imagine a lot of folks listening,
have been to sub-dogs and have been down to Greenville,
and it can get rowdy down there.
And you've got a true freshman quarterback at BYU and Bear Bachmeier
who has played absolutely nobody so far this year.
This is a 730 game.
I think it's a great atmosphere.
I like East Carolina in this spot.
They're catching six and a half now.
Maybe we drifted back to seven,
but I think that's an interesting story.
spot to look at the home dog.
I'll say a situational spot.
It makes me a little bit nervous because I've been impressed by what I've seen offensively.
But I look for these spots all the time, Kevin, where you're looking ahead or you're coming
off of a big game.
We mentioned Ole Miss Arkansas, right?
That was a great game back and forth.
Arkansas fall short.
Arkansas hosts Notre Dame next week.
And I was talking to a buddy of mine who lives in that Fayetteville area.
They've been talking about that game for like four or five months, Notre Dame
coming to Arkansas.
They got to go to Memphis this week, and they're a seven and a half point favorite.
I'm going to take Memphis in a sandwich spot.
I just think that's kind of a tricky spot there for them.
And then I'll say this.
I'll take the point for a second straight week with Temple.
I'll feel terrible about it.
But Georgia Tech, you know, that is a generational victory that they had last week
in the way that it unfolded.
That's a clear letdown spot against Temple to go.
Give me the point there.
And then the last one, this is a Kevin Sheehan special,
and I bet you it'll be on Van Pelt winners too.
Miami of Ohio is only a two and a half point home dog to UNLV.
UNLV is 3 and O.
Yeah.
Miami of Ohio's 0 and 2,
and the number is a stinky poo, two and a half.
So I think UNLV could be in some trouble headed to Oxford, Ohio,
to take on the Red Hawk of Miami on Saturday.
An absolute, you know, beautiful college town is Oxford, Ohio.
It is quintessential Americana college town.
Dan Mullen, you know, coaches UNLV.
He was, you know, part of the group at ESPN, the college football final show for the last few years.
They've beaten nobody, but I will tell you that, you know, this UCLA team, I had a
last week. I still can't figure out how they would be a favorite over anybody, even a short
favorite, and they were a 15 and a half point favorite over New Mexico that never had a shot.
But UNLV has beaten nobody, so that, of course, is going to be on the smell test. In fact,
all those plays you just gave out are all on my list for this weekend. I think I'm going to
steer clear of these Friday night games. You know, there's over the years, it seems like I'm
I'm not that great on these Friday night games.
I don't know what it is.
Maybe, actually, I shouldn't say that.
I think last year I had a couple of Friday night winners,
but they just never seem to be played like the games on Saturday are played.
All right.
What else?
I'll say this.
Speaking of UCLA, I watched that whole game.
Oh, my God.
I mean, that is one.
Maryland needs to win that game out in Pasadena.
And there's a national shop that I think.
folks in Maryland can bet at draft king.
They've got adjusted win totals up, Kevin.
And over under on UCLA is one and a half.
One and a half.
Oh, my God.
And Kevin, I bet the under today because they go to Northwestern, where that'll be a tricky
spot.
How about the Purple Cats?
Did you have Northwestern last week?
Of course I did.
Yeah.
They have Penn State.
That number dropped significantly.
I gave it out on the show Friday at 28, and then it went off at like 24.
So there was super sharp money on Northwestern.
And, you know, it wasn't necessarily looking great.
They were down 34-0-0 in the game, but they scored two touchdowns over the last few minutes of the game to get an easy cover.
Yeah, so, yeah, never in doubt where the purple cat there on Lake Michigan.
but I've been it under.
Yeah.
Yeah, it's a beautiful.
Beautiful little stadium temporary.
Yeah.
Very nice.
But yeah.
I'll say this, Kevin.
You know, one of the games I'm really, I'm excited to see a bunch of these games.
The game that I'm really intrigued by is Nebraska, Michigan.
That kid's not ready yet.
He's not ready yet.
Yeah.
And I mean, Michigan's a two and a half point favorite.
I know.
Sharon Moore is not going to be coaching the game.
That's a big spot for rule to get a big win at home.
They've been scoring all of a sudden after they couldn't score.
Look, I had Cincinnati in that open.
Oh, bad beat.
Yeah, but they've been scoring.
I know they haven't played anybody,
although they played the Akron team that I gave out last week that got a nice little cover
after they hadn't scored in two games.
But yeah, it'll be interesting because that's,
been sort of the issue with Nebraska.
And, you know, they're Patrick Mahomes obsessed quarterback.
All right.
Great job.
Appreciate it.
Love catching up with you and all this stuff.
We'll talk in a few weeks.
All right, Kevin.
Always appreciate it.
All right.
That's it, everybody.
Back tomorrow with Tommy.
