You don't want it.
You don't need it.
But you're going to get it anyway.
The Kevin Cheon Show.
He is Kevin.
Tommy's here.
I am here.
The show's presenting sponsors, as always,
Window Nation, 86690 Nation, Window Nation.com.
If you need new windows on the show today,
I do have a smell test pick for tonight's Thursday night NFL game
between the Bills and the Dolphins.
Tommy will have his predictive.
on the Washington Vegas game on Sunday.
This from Dave, Dave writes, Kevin, been listening to you for many years,
and I was a huge fan of Cooley's film breakdowns.
There's only one Chris Cooley, but I was thoroughly impressed with Steve.
I really hope that he becomes a weekly fixture on your show.
Huge fan of you both.
That's from Dave in San Diego.
God, we have listeners from all over, Tommy.
Yes, Steve Souter.
did film breakdown on the show this week. I did part two of the film breakdown, the defensive side
yesterday. And he was really good. And he stylistically is similar to Chris. Now, here's the thing.
And I was telling Tommy about this before the show started. Do you know, do you guys have any idea
the amount of effort and work coolly put into those film breakdowns and the effort that Steve
put in to one game of film breakdown when you're going to watch every play and grade every
player on every play. It's five, six, seven hours to do it. Cooley didn't have another job. Steve does.
And I'm talking about a real job in addition to calling the games. He is definitely going to do
it this week and then we'll see what happens. And of course, of course I have offered to, you know,
help him out by paying him something. But this is a podcast. Remember that, people. But he's really good. I'm sure you didn't listen to it. In fact, if I recall, you weren't a big fan of film breakdowns anyway when Cooley did him.
But I recognized how good they were. It just wasn't something that that captured my attention. Yeah, I know. I know. I mean, I wasn't ignorant as to how good they were and how people would value them.
Yes, that's true. And you know what? You're not alone. I know that many of you who listen to this show are like,
I don't even understand half of what he's talking about. It's so technical. It's so football talk.
I do think that over the last, I don't know, five, six years, as people have gotten much more involved in, you know, the advanced numbers,
whether they're misleading or not, people really do, you know, get into PFF and, you know, 33rd team and all of these advanced, you know, statistical, you know, companies.
They get into a lot of the film breakdowns.
I will tell you this, and I don't know if I've ever said this before, other than to just make fun of a lot of the people that do film breakdowns on the Internet, because any, there's so many of them now.
And you have no idea if the person doing it is credible.
But I will mention this one story.
I'm not going to mention the person by name because, to be honest with you, I don't even know who this is and who they were talking about.
But one of the people within the organization that I occasionally talk with, we were talking about this last summer, I think it was, before the season began.
And I said, well, you can, you know, he was a big.
fan of Cooley the way he broke down the film. And I said, I hope to have Chris back to do
film breakdown for this season as well. It'll be fun because he's a big fan of Jaden Daniels,
thinks he's going to be a really good quarterback. And he said, man, everybody's doing the Cooley bit now.
And I said, oh my God, there are probably for every team. I bet there are four or five guys out
there that never played the game. Not that that is a prerequisite. But really, you know, I don't
know if they're good or credible or not. And the guy just said, I promise you, I keep up to date
on some of these things. Nobody has done it well with our team since Cooley. They just don't have
as much information as he had. And he got specific about one person in particular, but I'll be
honest with you, I can't even remember who that person was because I don't know, I don't know the
list of people that break down film on our team. I know Steve Souter did it on this podcast,
and he was really good. And so I'm going to hope to have him moving forward. You're not into
film breakdowns on radio or on the internet. I do not watch any of them on the internet. I know
they exist because I see him pop up in my timeline all the time, you know, with me mentioned as
part of, did you see this she in? And then I look at it and it's like, the guy,
breaking down film with 30 followers on Twitter.
I don't even know who that person is.
They might be good at it, maybe.
But I'm not paying attention to, you know, an hour and a half film breakdown.
Steve was excellent, really, really good.
I know he knows what he's talking about.
So hopefully we can get him consistently on the show.
So, Tommy.
Yes.
What do you think?
Do you think Jaden's going to play?
on Sunday or not. He is not practicing again
today. Kingsbury just said
Jaden's taking mental reps right now. Marcus is taking
the physical reps. Quinn said yesterday
if he doesn't practice, he's not going to play. So this is not
a Chicago Bears situation from last year where he didn't practice
but then he played in the game. Quinn was pretty
adamant, I think very, very direct in saying he's got to
of practice, which means if he doesn't practice tomorrow, he's not playing in the game.
What do you think's going to happen?
I don't think he's playing.
And I think commanders fans should get used to this because I think this is going to be
the norm for Jaden and basically the norm in the NFL for quarterbacks like Jaden.
That they're going to miss games during the season.
you know, they're playing 17 games now.
They're about to expand to 18 games.
You throw in a playoffs.
If you make it all the way to the Super Bowl,
you're talking 22 games.
To ask quarterbacks to hold up for that long,
especially when the second most important guy in the field
is the guy who's getting paid to take the quarterback out.
This is just a new norm.
I mean, what you hope for
it's not something
season ending,
but I think this is something
you're always going to have to live with,
particularly with this guy.
I mean, I think it'd be nice
with every hit.
He gains a little bit of wisdom
along the way to maybe
avoid the unnecessary hits,
but I don't think
he's even considered that stage yet.
So I just think that,
I don't think he's going to start.
I think he's okay.
I think he'll probably put
the following week.
And I just think this is what you're going to be dealing with with this guy moving forward.
Yeah, we talked a lot about this the other day.
And if they don't minimize the number of hits he's taking,
it seems to me, based on his frame.
And, you know, I think that this is definitely going to be a part of it, unfortunately.
I can tell you who thinks he is playing on Sunday.
the head coach of the Las Vegas Raiders, Pete Carroll, talking to the media yesterday, said that, well, we've got to prepare for Jaden Daniels playing, and the bet is he probably will.
They may not practice him until later in the week, but we're going to count on him going.
We have a lot of background about Marcus on the staff and all of that, so we know what his capabilities are, we think.
And so we're playing for both guys, but primarily Jaden.
You know, if Jaden is okay, you know, and they think that there's a good chance that, you know, he's going to be fine and he ends up practicing tomorrow and he does go on Sunday.
This could have been all along, you know, we're giving him the rest.
We think he's going to be okay.
It was just tweaked, you know, there's so many ways, degrees of sprains and,
all of that.
But we're being very vague and evasive because we want the Raiders to prepare for both guys.
I think that's smart.
I think even if you internally, there's a strong, you know, belief that Jaden's going to be fine
and he's going to be able to practice on Friday and go on Sunday, you don't say anything
like that.
You handle it the way they've handled it all week, which is not really saying,
much at all, other than that he has to practice on Friday to play.
So they may be playing possum.
They could be playing possum, although...
Uh-oh.
Although...
Playing possum.
Although I think you're going to be right.
I have had the hunch, too, especially when he came out and said in a very forceful way,
no, he's got to practice to play.
And so they got to see him back out onto the field, on the practice field.
I just have a sense that he's not going to play Sunday.
And I will tell you this, Tommy, because I did after the radio show today,
and before we started to record this podcast,
I went and watched a lot of the Raiders Chargers game,
not the Raiders' New England game,
just sort of to prepare for tomorrow's show,
where I give you my keys to beating the Raiders.
The Raiders are definitely beatable.
This would be a get-right game if Jaden Daniels was healthy and playing on
Sunday. This would be a game that I would feel very confident about. A lot of reasons. The Raiders
are really struggling up front offensively with their offensive line. Defensively, they're
really struggling on the back end. And I just think that it would be an absolute big opportunity
for Washington to roll against a team coming into Landover, west coast to east coast.
on a short week facing a team with a mini-buy-week rest.
I mean, this is the biggest net rest day advantage you can have.
And this is a gambler's dream.
I mean, betters will tell you, you know,
west to east for a one o'clock kick is already an advantage East Coast team.
But if the East Coast team then has days of rest advantage, it's huge.
If it is Marcus Marietta, I think they can win the game.
But I don't feel the same way about it.
I then think, you know, he's got to be sharp.
I know he played well against Carolina last year.
Remember, when he came in, they already had, I think, a 10-to-nothing lead in the game.
And then, you know, he came in and played a cowboy team in the second half in the season finale
where the Cowboys had nothing to play for.
So, I mean, I've always liked Marcus Mariotta.
I think he was the right choice to be a backup because they don't have to change.
the offense with him, but he's not Jaden Daniels.
This would have been, or will be, if Jaden plays, an absolute get right, you know,
take it to the bank, they're going to win this game on Sunday.
With Marcus, I feel like it's still advantage Washington because of the rest and because
of, you know, West to East.
I think that's a big deal in the NFL.
But, you know, it'll be close.
it's not coin flip, but it's just slight advantage home team.
So if Jaden's healthy, you play him, period.
If he's 100%, you play him.
If he's not, you sit him because it's week three, and this is a long haul.
But there's no reason to sit him just to sit him if he's healthy,
because this is a game you've got to get.
Yes, especially when you go on the road in next two weeks
against two tough opponents in Atlanta and San Diego
and the Chargers.
You can call them San Diego.
The L.A. Chargers.
Yes. Agreed.
Yeah.
No, this is a game you better win
because I don't know.
I don't see them making it up
in the next two games after that.
Of course, worst case scenario is
Jane was hurt a little bit,
but they decide, but he does practice Friday.
They decide to play him,
and he gets hurt more and they lose the game.
They should not play him if there's any risk with his knee.
If he can't play like Jaden Daniels, you don't play him.
Because the problem with Jaden Daniels is if you say, look, we can just,
we can line it up and Jaden can just throw from the pocket.
We'll put extra man protection and we can riddle that secondary.
He can have a big day throwing the football.
You can't risk that with Jaden because Jaden's going to turn into Jaden.
Jaden Daniels when he wants to turn into Jaden Daniels as a playmaker.
So you can't put him on the field if you think you can dial him back to protect him.
I don't think that that's a good idea.
If he's fully healthy and he can play like Jaden Daniels, go for it.
There's no reason to sit him if he's 100%.
You know, I think that some, you know, I think football players who played the game said,
what are you talking about?
No one's ever 100%.
you know, once the season starts.
Look, they got banged up.
They lost a lot of players, you know, in that game.
And I got this from Rick.
Rick writes, Kevin, love the show.
I know losing John Bates is tough,
and I suppose we should give Senate and Yankoff
a chance to prove that they can be effective blocking tight ends.
But Max Crosby is coming to town, and that's worrisome.
Is it absolutely crazy to consider putting Wiley-At-Right tackle,
and playing Connerley at tight end and then pinning him right there to that right side.
Connerley's athletic and more agile than most of our other linemen.
The idea of Crosby taking a bead on Daniels or Mariotta concerns me,
I trust that Connerley will be a great tackle, but he's had a rough couple of weeks.
Rick, I said this either yesterday on the podcast or it was just today on radio.
I can't remember.
I don't think it will be Connerly personally playing that tight end.
But they have used Trent Scott in particular as a sixth offensive lineman.
They could use Wiley as the sixth offensive lineman.
Maybe it would be Connerly going outside.
I don't know, but I think that that's in play.
Because if Bates is out and it looks like he is, there's no replacement for Bates on this roster.
None.
By the way, there aren't many John Bates' in the league, period.
He is an excellent blocking tight end.
And I don't think that that's Cinnett.
And I don't think that's Cinnett because when Bates went out,
Sinit barely played.
And they completely went away from having a blocking tight end in the offense.
And that's certainly one of the reasons that they didn't run the football.
But I wrote down again today after watching the Raiders,
a sixth offensive lineman in this game is a possibility.
I think it's a really good possibility because I don't think they see Senate that way.
And Senate's build is completely different than John Bates' build.
Sinnott, Yankoff can't be a blocking tight end.
He's more of a receiver.
And I think they view Senate as more of a receiver.
So, yeah, I think that's possible.
I think that's really possible.
Tommy, this is going to be a very interesting, you know,
thing for Kingsbury. How to replace Bates, how to replace Noah Brown, if Noah Brown can't go.
Noah Brown's crucial to this offense because of their lack of depth at wide receiver.
I have no idea what they're going to do if Noah Brown can't go. I would assume we're going to see more Luke McCaffrey.
I would assume we're going to see more Chris Moore for sure. But Noah Brown is a
Jaden Daniel's favorite, and he is their number two, well, I guess with Debo, their number
three guy. That's going to be interesting to see how they fill that void. And then without
Echler, the running back situation will be very interesting. I think Kroski Merritt gets the start.
I think he becomes the leadback in the huddle, first and 10, to open the game. I think Rodriguez
will get some short yardage and will spell Kroski Merritt, you know, for a series or two as the
lead back. And then I think we're going to see a lot of Jeremy McNichols as the Echler replacement
on third down. They trust him. They think he's good. They love him on special teams. And so that, to
me, makes the most sense there. But man, we're at week three. And the players they lost are
players that are hard to replace, really hard to replace. They have more depth on the defensive
line, you know, and so the loss of WISE is big, don't get me wrong, but they've got more
players there. They don't have many players that answer John Bates' absence or Noah Brown's
absence or Echler's absence. So the team wasn't deep coming into the season, and they're going to
get tested here. By the way, just real quickly, I know, I know this isn't your favorite part of the show
in looking at the matchup, but there were a couple of things that I, that I noticed.
I think Washington offensively, if it's Jaden, has a huge advantage. I think they can really move
the football. Justin Herbert was super effective. There were lots of open people. And I think,
unlike the Green Bay game, I think that Terry could have a big game here. I think
Ertz could have a big game. I think Debo can have a big game. I think what other,
if it's Moore or Lane or McCaffrey, if it's Jaden, not that Marcus can't take advantage
of the same things, but I think they can throw the football. The key will be pass protection.
They have to hold up in pass pro. And if they do, you know, Crosby's, you know, he's, he's,
he's difficult, but it's not all four of the past rushers like it was with Green Bay.
So I think that there is going to be a real opportunity to throw the football.
Connerly, Jr., I would sit him, you know, if they're not going to go with that sixth offensive lineman,
I would play Wiley because getting Max Crosby after you got Micah Parsons,
after you got Burns and a little bit of Abdul Carter.
I mean, it could be another rough day,
and they're going to have to help.
They're going to have to give them a lot of help.
But I like, I think the matchup offensively
against the Raiders throwing the football is a good one.
They just have to hold up in protection.
And then defensively, this should feel like the giant game up front.
The Raiders are not good.
and they've also got an injury with one of their better players.
I don't know if he's going to play.
Powers Johnson, Jackson Powers Johnson, their right guard is injured,
and he's a good player for them.
But Ashton Genty, the guy they took sixth overall, Tommy,
is averaging 0.2 yards before getting hit.
I know. He's struggling.
It's not his fault.
They can't block.
He's getting hit in the back feet.
He's actually very good at breaking tackles and making people miss.
But they are getting absolutely manhandled up front.
So this should be another big game for Kinlau.
Souter said Kinlau was easily the best player on the field for Washington.
This should be a big comeback game for Duran, Dorrance Armstrong,
you know, depending on what they do, Eddie Goldman,
depending on what they do with Jalen Holmes and in,
John Baptiste. This should be a big game up front. But let me just mention that if it isn't,
the Raiders have really good team speed at wide receiver. So they've got this guy,
this fourth rounder from Tennessee, Thornton, he's 4344. You know, they have real speed.
They've got maybe the best tight end in football and Brock Bowers.
though he's not 100% he looked it on Monday night.
And Gino can throw the football.
So if you can stop the run, make them one dimensional and then get the pressure like you got
against Russell Wilson against that bad offensive line, then they can't hit those big plays.
But if somehow they're able to take the big shots, they're capable of hitting big
plays because they've got speed at wide receiver and they have a phenomenal tight end.
This is why, like, I'm not taking this game for granted, especially if Jaden doesn't play.
But the matchup is a good one if Jaden plays.
And on defense, man, I could see Ken Lawn Payne and Armstrong having massive games.
With that said, let's get to your prediction.
Who do you like on Sunday?
I like Washington, no matter who starts.
Okay.
because I like Marcus Marriota
but I think it'll be a close game
I think he's going to need help from the running game
of the commanders which I think means that Bill
will have a big game, a hundred yard game
rushing for Bill in a 2219 commanders win
22 to 19, but Bill Kroski Merck goes over 100 yards.
Yes.
Okay.
You know what?
I would take that right now and run with it, especially if it's Mario-Ota.
I mean, I would take that and not even worry about it.
Let's get Jaden back out onto the field against the Falcons the next week.
Because I'll tell you what, they got to be two-in-one late Sunday afternoon.
They really have to be two-in-one late.
Sunday afternoon. This would be
a bad loss.
It would be a bad loss
emotionally
for a fan base
going to a home game
and seeing
there and still basking in the glow
of the RFK
stadium victory.
There's a lot of goodwill
and good feeling right now among this
fan base. Yeah.
And it would be ashamed to deflate it with a
loss for a game that probably
Most people at the stadium expect them to win.
Good segue.
Let's get to the RFK Stadium final approval from yesterday,
and we will do that right after these words from a few of our sponsors.
This episode is brought to you by prize picks.
Guys, how good was this past weekend?
Georgia, Tennessee on Saturday, Cowboys Giants and overtime on Sunday.
My favorite Daily Fantasy Sports app during football season,
is without question prize picks. Prize picks is fun, it's exciting, it's a game of skill,
and it's very easy to play. Prize picks present you with stat projections on players,
and all you have to do is pick more or less. Like last night in the Monday night game,
I had under 49 and a half rush yards for Aaron Jones, in part because my guy Paul Chartian,
out of Minneapolis told me that Jordan Mason was going to be a very big part of Minnesota's
rush attack. I cashed on that one. Aaron Jones had 44 yards rushing. I also went over Caleb Williams
on passing yards, 218 and a half, and he threw for 210. So I didn't cash on that one, but it's so much
fun to play. And that's the example. They give you numbers, stat projections, and you just go more,
or less.
If you get the picks right, you cash in.
Prize picks puts their users first,
so all withdrawals are fast, safe, and secure.
Price picks offers Venmo, Apple Pay, MasterCard,

They also offer injury reboots.
If one of your player leaves the game in the first half and doesn't return,
prize picks won't count it as a loss.
Make your picks in less than 60 seconds and turn your takes into cash all season long on prize picks.

So guys, if you're like me and you've basically been buying and wearing the same type of underwear
for years, in my case, boxer briefs, same brand, same type for a long time,
well, not anymore for me.
I want to tell you about skims for men, something I've discovered recently, the softest underwear I've ever worn.
I got a few pairs of the 5-inch boxer briefs so comfortable.

Real quickly before we get to the stadium stuff.
Two things.
Number one, Debo Samuel didn't practice today, held out for personal reasons.
Hopefully he'll be back tomorrow and hopefully everything's all right with him.
And then this, Tommy, did you know or did you remember that Delaware State this year
is being coached by Deshawn Jackson?
He's the head coach at Delaware State, and Clinton Portis is the running backs coach.
They are two and one through their first three games, and they are the number one leading rush offense in 1-A,
in the next level down of college football.
Pretty impressive.
Clinton Portis' first year as a running backs coach, Delaware State in the Miak, you know, with Howard and South Carolina.
Carolina State, et cetera, number one rush offense in one double A or, you know, non-bowl division,
college football.
So keep it up, Deshaun and Clinton and Delaware State.
They lost a Delaware in the opener, but they beat Albany and they beat Bowie State in their last two games.
So there you go.
Good for them, because Bowie State is traditionally a pretty good program.
Yeah. You know, wouldn't surprise me if when you have kind of an all-star coaching staff, if you're able to attract some really good players, not just because of their names, but, you know, also because they're solid coaches. I've always thought that Clinton would be a solid coach. I don't know that I ever thought Deshaun Jackson would be a head coach somewhere. But apparently he's doing a phenomenal job. So good for you.
them. All right. So the stadium deal is done. I guess, and I said this yesterday, what did we need
the second vote for? I know that this is the way it's done, but we celebrated this six weeks ago,
and then it was back in peril for about an hour yesterday with the letter that Mark Klaus,
the commander's team president, sent to Mendelsohn and the city.
council because the city council decided at the 11th hour to ask for, you know, uh, additions or
amendments to the deal. The deal passed 11 to 2 last night. It happened after I recorded the
podcast yesterday. We're all good. We're all set. But what do you know about what went down yesterday and
why, um, why we need, I mean, there's no, there's not a third vote, is there?
No, there's not a third vote. But this is there, this isn't probably in the constant.
for the city as to how legislation is passed by the D.C. Council.
There's an introductory vote, and then there's a final vote.
It gives you the opportunity to make changes, to have input.
Now, I think what you saw was a couple of city council members trying to grandstand,
because if you really wanted to make an impact on this state,
stadium proposal, you needed to do it before the 11th hour.
This was not a situation where deadlines make deals.
You needed to express this before, you know, the days or hours before the final vote.
So that was just a little bit of grandstanding, I think.
Well, it clearly ticked off the team.
Do you agree with that?
Yeah, but, you see, to me,
I mean, that would be nothing to me.
You know, you're pissed off.
Good.
Go someplace else.
Go someplace else where they're going to give you 100 acres of land.
Tommy, you could put up hotels at a restaurant.
I'm with you, and things like this happen in business all the time.
But I'm just asking you, was that something that is typical in this process where the city council comes to an agreement?
There's a second celebration, which is what, you know, what we had back in,
early August.
And then they come back again and continue to haggle until the very end.
Is that normal?
I've never covered the D.C. City Council.
I've covered hundreds, hundreds of council meetings in various locations in other places
in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Maryland.
And this is typical.
usually by a small minority on the board
to try to saber rattle,
get their name out there,
have their say.
At that point, it's politic.
Look,
there were two things
that I think the council should have effectively tried to do.
One would have been easy.
What's to squeeze more money
out of the community development fund
than the $50 million dollars
that commanders agreed to give.
Josh Harris was willing to give more
when he was trying to get the Sixers Arena built
in Philadelphia than that.
He was willing to give $75 million,
and that was a project that was half the cost.
So I think they could have gotten more
for community groups in those neighborhoods
to have more money.
I think they could have gotten that.
What would have been harder to do,
but I think would have been worth the fight,
was to get a piece of the development.
you know, even if it's 10%, you know, have a 10% piece of whatever revenue the commanders
generate from developing the land at the city right now, oh, leases.
It's city lease property.
Yep.
Okay.
So I would have tried to find a way to see if, okay, we're going to give you this land,
but you've got to give us 10% of revenue or 15%.
of the revenue.
That would have made the city real partners
with the commanders in this.
That would have been hard to do
because the commanders thought they were really getting a special deal here,
but I still think the deal would have been good for them to have done.
I don't know if they could have pulled that off or not.
Other than that, you know,
it was clear that Maryland,
particularly once the D.C. offer was made
really was not a player anymore.
And Virginia was never a player.
Well, we're really happy that it's done
because now we're going to get those women's World Cup matches in 2031.
I bet it is...
We're going to be rolling and dough when those women World Cup fans come to town.
Well, I bet it is a big deal.
I bet it is...
Oh, I'm telling you.
Well, I mean, I'm being serious.
here's what you are going to get, though.
You know, again, this is like deja vu,
because we just had these conversations six weeks ago.
Like, this morning before the radio show,
I started to look at, you know,
Josh Harris's statement, Muriel Bowser's statement,
all the statements.
They're the exact same statements that we had six weeks ago.
Everybody's excited about the return to RFK.
But I guess they had to go through this.
It's more procedure.
I know.
I understand that, but it's like a,
It's like now we've had three celebrations of the RFK news.
The initial press conference with the mayor.
That's true.
You know, with by the way, the commissioner of the NFL, with Josh Harris and the whole thing.
And then we had, you know, the back and forth between the city council and the team.
And, you know, was it going to get done?
Wasn't it?
And they voted yes.
You know, nine to three needed two thirds back in August in all of the statements.
I mean, we've had three situations of just unbelievable euphoric statements coming from everybody involved.
It just seems like, yeah, no, I just read this statement a month ago.
Today's a historic day for D.C.
Yeah.
Are you sick of celebrating good news?
Don't you like, is it a repeat worth it?
I guess I got all my excitement out last month.
I don't think I had any left.
for yesterday for the procedural formality vote, which got exciting for about an hour and a half.
But you know what?
Again, we've talked about this already a couple of times.
D.C. is going to host a Super Bowl within the next 10 years.
Yes.
If the stadium opens truly in 2030, by 32 or 33, they're going to have a Super Bowl here.
and that is going to be quite the week.
We'll go to that one.
We'll definitely go to that one together.
We won't have to pick one or the other to go to that Super Bowl.
Boy, that's an awfully positive attitude you've got.
Yeah, it is a ways off, isn't it?
Yes, it is.
I feel really good about it.
I really do.
I feel really good about it.
I'm excited about a Super Bowl coming to Washington.
You know what?
a final four in Washington would be great.
Women's World Cup, Men's World Cup.
There will be some big-time events in D.C.
WrestleMania.
Okay.
Yeah.
We've never had that as a possibility in this town.
And other cold weather cities have had it.
You know, Minneapolis, Detroit, Indy,
because they've had, you know, indoor stadiums.
And state-of-the-art stadiums.
Ford Field.
The one in Minnesota is the one that everybody loves.
And this, I mean, let's face it.
No offense to Minneapolis, Detroit, and Indianapolis,
if you've got a beautiful facility in a beautiful downtown area,
this should become a destination for the biggest events.
It's Washington, D.C.
Not talking about Detroit, no offense.
I would agree.
I'd just think, what, in two years?
you're going to be hosting the NFL draft.
I know that probably doesn't get you excited.
There'll be a lot of people coming to town for that.
I mean, that's a three-day, yeah, that's a three-day massive event, not a one-dayer,
although the Super Bowl, as you know, and the final four are, you know, multiple-day events as well.
What do you think is a bigger revenue generator, the NFL draft or the Women's World Cup?
I don't know anything about the economic.
around the Women's World Cup.
I would imagine that you have an influx of a lot of people.
When I had the mayor on last time a few months ago,
I think it was in July, I did ask her.
I asked her at the very end.
I said, do you have any idea, I'm just curious,
as to what the Women's World Cup would bring to the city?
And she said, I think she gave me an answer.
She said, I got to go back and check on.
on it, but it would be in the, you know, I forget what she said actually now, but she didn't have
the answer at hand.
I mean, 600,000 people went to Green Bay for the draft.
I know.
You know, 600,000 people are not coming to D.C. for the Women's World Cup.
I doubt that that would happen.
Yeah.
Yeah, I doubt very much, although this has been a good soccer market, always.
You know?
Just not for this show.
All right.
I've got a smell test pick,
and we were going to try to get into this
Kauai Leonard story, this Clippers story.
We'll do that and maybe a few other things
when we come back.

And a great place to host a holiday party is at Shelly's back room.
We're talking about holidays already?
Yes.
Okay.
Yes.
whether whether I mean if you're planning a Christmas party don't you think you should
jump in on your location you're probably right especially if you want it to be at a place like
Shelley's there's a lot of demand because it's going to be in demand yeah a place a place like
shelley's for an event like this I speak from experience because shelley's host the DC
gray cigars and curvalls fundraiser every year and I couldn't imagine it being any place else
that's how good Shelley's backroom does
They offer great food as part of their package.
We have great wings that are available as part of the party package.
They have a whole list of foods that are available.

Maybe get a promotion in the process.
Host your Christmas party at Shelley's back room.
I like when we start talking about the holidays.
Although it was kind of humid and hot out there.
The rain the last few days, it's kind of sticky out there.
It's supposed to be even hotter tomorrow.
Oh, boy. Is it?
I didn't even look at that.
All right.
Well, I mean, Halloween candy was available in supermarkets like three weeks ago before Labor Day.
That's a bit early.
I don't remember that being the case years ago.
But, you know, it's all about getting it out there.
People like to see when they go into stores Halloween stuff and then Thanksgiving and Christmas stuff.
They love to see that.
It's sort of comforting, I think, for people.
All right, real quickly.
Well, I think if today it's to get sociological on this, I think today as opposed to when I was growing up, I think families are busy enough that they have to get on top of things early or else they fall behind.
So I think that's why they put that stuff out there early because I think it's all about, for a lot of families, it's all about planning, you know.
I mean, because they have so much on their cards that they have to deal with when I was growing up.
You know, my mom went out and got some candy like a day or two before Halloween.
Right.
So it's just different demands, I think, have resulted in the need for planning, which puts all these decorations and stuff out early.
plus, you know, they recognize that people want to spend their money right away, too.
Yeah.
Get it out of the way.
Boy, you know, when you were a kid growing up in Brooklyn, it was two days before Halloween, getting the candy.
And by the way, on, you know, a few days in October, you could watch World Series games on a weekday afternoon or listen to them, right?
Yes.
Yeah, I remember bringing a transistor radio with earfoam.
earphones to elementary school. Really? To listen to a World Series game? Absolutely.
I mean, in 61, the Yankees were in it. 62, 63. You know, I wasn't a Yankee fan, but I was in
New York. So for 64, the Yankees were in it. So yeah, the Yankees were, so yeah, I remember
listening to the game on the radio, hoping the Yankees would lose. You know, speaking of baseball,
I love this time of year, and I certainly love it when we get to the postseason, and we're down, you know, we're into the final, it's not this weekend, it's next week, right? That is the final week of the season.
No, not next week, the weekend after. The weekend after, okay. Wild card wise, man, the Mets, the Mets have really struggled.
Right now, they've got a game lead, I think a game, game and a half over Arizona, two over Cincinnati and San Francisco.
be disastrous if the Mets didn't make the postseason, right, after the start they got off to with what they have in that lineup.
And Soto's been okay this year.
You know, there was a lot of complaining about Soto.
Okay.
Yeah.
He's got 41 home runs this year.
And I think he's coming up on 100 RBIs, right?
And he's got over 30 stolen baseball.
Yeah.
Remember early in the season when Mets fans were complaining?
Yeah.
Silly, huh?
He's got 115 run scored, too.
Yeah, here it is.
He's got 41 homers, 99 RBIs.
God, how did he get to 41 homers?
Is he hit a bunch of them recently?
32 steals and 115 runs scored.
That's an MVP season any other year that, you know,
then show on.
Yeah, O'Connie's not playing.
Baseball, yeah.
He's got six homers in September so far.
So he's on a pretty good home run pace.
Wow.
Yeah, 15 RBIs already this month.
But they have not been winning.
And the Phillies are now 12 and a half games up in the National League East.
That was back and forth for much.
of the summer. They have completely pulled away.
And, you know, you pretty much have...
A lot of pressure. A lot of pressure on the Phillies to advance beyond the World Series
in the postseason.
Yes.
To win a World Series.
To win a World Series.
Yeah, to win a World Series.
Because...
And, I mean, they lost their best pitcher in Zach Wheeler.
I know they were one of their best pitchers.
Yeah.
You know, so they've...
It's going to be tough for them.
they were wait a minute
2022 did they make it to the world series
and they lost to Houston was that 22 or 23
because they did make it to a world series with Harper
yes they did because he had that great series
against the Padres in the
in the National League Championship series
2022
but they have not advanced
far enough the last few years
yeah a lot of pressure
on them and the Mets need to make the postseason, I would imagine. All right. So real quickly,
let me get to a smell test pick for tonight. Brought to you by our good friends at My Booky.
As I've mentioned for two weeks now, my bookie is offering you guys, listeners to this podcast,
if you want to bet on football, a really, really nice opportunity. Now, the new customer
sign up is not unique. They're offering a 50% cash bonus. So if you,
you've never signed up with MyBooky, you'll get a 50% cash bonus.
That means when you deposit, say, $100, they'll put an extra 50 into your account.

You'll get a 50% cash bonus.
That's what they're really offering because very rarely do you get these kinds of offers for existing customers.
My bookie is offering existing customers, returning customers of this podcast, a 50% cash bonus.
put in the promo code, DC reload.
By the way, I was looking ahead to next week's point spreads in the NFL just to see, you know, what Washington, Atlanta is.
Washington right now is a one and a half point favorite on the road against the Falcons next week.
So that's a point spread that's expecting Jane Daniels to play.
Yeah, I think so, for sure.
Yes.
Yeah.
They're still right now at my bookie a three.
and a half point favorite against the Raiders.
If Jaden doesn't play, if he's ruled out, I would expect that to come down even further.
The total is 44.5.
The smell test pick is Thursday night football, NFL style.
Buffalo is hosting Miami tonight.
So I gave this out on radio when I looked at the MyBooky line, and it was 12.
It's now 12 and a half, but I'll stick with the 12.
I'll take the dolphins plus the 12 tonight.
A lot of sharp money on Miami.
That line's been moving around a lot,
but the public is overwhelmingly betting the Buffalo Bills.
There is definitely a perception that the dolphins are done,
that there is turmoil that Mike McDaniel could get fired
because they have sort of a mini-buy playing this Thursday night game
before they play their next game a week from Sunday.
And, yeah, he could be in trouble if they fall to 0-and-3 tonight.
I like them tonight plus the 12.
I don't know about an outright win, but they are definitely the sharp side and the anti-public side.
So the first smell test pick of the weekend, and I've had three straight winning weeks to open up the season.
And let's see what my record is.
11 and 5 and 1 going into last week 8 and 6 so 1910 and 1 is the record 1911 and 1 1911 and 1 is the record heading into this weekend
and yeah Miami plus the 12 you might be able to get 12 and a half if you go to my bookie right now
and sign up all right Tommy we'll finish up with this so I don't know how many people know this story
or have been following it.
But Kauai Leonard plays for the L.A. Clippers.
The owner of the Clippers is Steve Balmer,
the co-founder many, many, many years ago with Bill Gates of Microsoft.
Steve Balmer is one of the richest people in the world.
The Clippers have underperformed in the postseason.
Kauai Leonard, after they brought him to L.A.,
he's been hurt a lot.
When he's not been hurt, they've been pretty good.
when he's been hurt, they haven't been very good.
Last week, Pablo Tori.
Pablo Tori was with ESPN, right, Tommy?
And now he's got a podcast called Pablo Tori finds out.
He is, I think, you know, he's the guy that goes on with Tony and Mike when one of them is out on PTI.
I know Tony likes him a lot.
I know you think he's a very good investigative reporter.
he reported last week that a company by the name of Aspiration,
which was a company that Steve Balmer invested 50 million into through his personal LLC,
that that company was essentially a sham company set up to circumvent the NBA salary cap
and pay Kauai Leonard another big chunk of money in the form of an endorsement deal with this company called Aspiration, which was a tree planting company.
The four-year, $28 million endorsement deal with Leonard in 2022 was through this company, Aspiration, Balmer, a big investor.
and in September
2021, the Clippers
announced a huge partnership
with this company.
In the agreement with Leonard
with this company, it essentially
says that
Leonard's got to be
a member of the L.A. Clippers
for this deal to continue,
if not the deal would be terminated.
Well, most endorsement contracts
do not care about what team
you're playing on.
So you can get into more
of this because I know you have followed it more closely, but that's it in a nutshell.
Pablo Tori reported that this company was set up as essentially a sham company to pay
Kauai Leonard no-show endorsement money that would circumvent the NBA salary cap.
It's a big deal because if it's proven, there's a lot that could happen.
His overall contract could be voided.
Balmer could be, you know, ousted as an owner.
They could get fined.
They could get docked draft picks.
You know, this is a big no-no in sports when you circumvent the salary cap.
Go ahead.
Okay.
Now, I'll give you my rundown, but I think people would be more interested in my own personal trails and tribulations than this.
But we'll go with this.
Okay?
I'll give you this.
Here's what, the way I understand it, when Tony killed Ralph, his no-show jobs got split up between Silvio and Pauli and Kauai.
Okay.
So they all got like, whenever Ralph's no-show jobs, they split it up.
Right.
And I think that's what this is uncovering right now.
Yeah.
I really don't care.
Look, I tell you what, here's what I would do.
if I was an intrepid reporter, as opposed to an old columnist.
There's a good chance that if the Clippers were doing this, other teams were doing it.
Generally, I found that if there's a scandal in one place, they're usually not the first people to think of it.
There's usually people in other places doing the same thing.
okay so i think that could be the fear for the for the NBA is that that other teams could be found
out for for conducting the same practice so i that would have surprised me at some point if that
surfaces i think that in sports there's always you know little opportunities you know
to circumvent the salary cap to um to compensate players uh and and in ways by
the way you wouldn't even think of, you know, loaning a jet or loaning a yacht or loaning. Loaning a yacht.
Yeah. So I do want to just take a moment because this story is very complicated and there's a lot of pushback from the CEO of aspiration and from Balmer.
And the commissioner, you know, kind of said never heard of this until Pablo Tori's reporting.
but for me,
Kauai Leonard has been one of my favorite players in sports for a long time now.
I just love his game.
And like a lot of you would say,
God,
that doesn't even fit the kind of player you like.
Like he's never available.
He's incredibly difficult at times to deal with.
There's a lot of stuff about Kauai that's just different.
You know, he is an introvert.
But I'll tell you what, man, he has figured out a way to get paid a shitload of money.
And he's unfortunately just been injured so much.
Look, the playoff run with the Raptors when they won the title in Toronto.
It was, he proved himself in that moment to be one of the great players of this generation.
And I just love the style of play.
I think he's the best two-way player of the last 20 years.
I do.
I think he's the best combined offensive and defensive player in one body that the NBA's
had over the last 20 years.
But the injuries have really, he's going to be a Hall of Famer,
but they've kind of killed his standing,
although he played well in the postseason last year in that series they lost to Denver.
But there was a story written ESPN this week.
I forget who wrote the story.
But, you know, Kauai Leonard is now viewed by the league and by agents and other GMs as a real cautionary tale.
He still do a lot of money.
He's going to be paid $50 million this upcoming season and then is eligible for another max extension or another extension next summer.
I'll read from this story.
Several rival executives said the Clippers' initial investment in Leonard, though it came at what would,
what they deemed to be a steep cost was a smart move that any team would have made at the time,
especially one with the Clippers' long track record of losing and dysfunction.
But now those same executives all judge the return on that investment in the same way.
One rival GM told ESPN, quote,
looking back, the deal was an effing disaster, closed quote.
Interviews with nearly two dozen team sources, former staffers, rival execs,
agents and others across the country convey the exact same. They reveal how a team desperate for a
star and relevance capitulated to Leonard and those around him seeking to keep him happy and healthy,
even as the organization's culture devolved into an internal mixture of fear and secrecy and an
external stream of legal battles and allegations of misconduct. This last investigation is different
a former clipper staffer said of the league's inquiry into this sponsorship deal that Balmer invested in.
This one directly calls into question Steve Balmer's character.
At some point, Steve has to get out of the Kauai business, closed quote.
You know, there's another quote in here essentially saying the same,
that they have catered to him, which,
is his style. I mean, he wouldn't have gone there unless he got everything he wanted.
Right.
You know, and he's, you know, a load management guy, you know, and that was part of the problem in
San Antonio with, you know, the distrust that developed, not only between the Spurs
and Kauai, but Kauai and the Spurs before he went off to Toronto.
He is one of the more, I don't know, what's the word, mercurial?
athletes of this last 25 years of this century.
Because his talent is just unbelievable.
And when he's been healthy,
he's been one of the best players in the sport.
But man,
the business of getting into Kauai for the Clippers
has not worked out at all.
No.
Maybe they'll have a good season this year.
I don't know.
Balmer could be in big trouble with this one.
Could be.
Yes.
I know that there is some thought out there that not all of what Pablo Tories reported is accurate.
I'm not, you know, involved in the story enough to know one way or the other.
We'll see how this thing shakes out.
You got anything else?
Yeah, I got a couple of things that are more interesting than no-show jobs.
All right.
Well, let's get to those right after these words.
a few of our sponsors.
If you haven't rated or reviewed the show and you can spare 60 seconds to do it, it would be
much appreciated.
Apple allows you to give us up to five stars and write a quick one to two sentence review.

That's big for us as well.
Tommy, I mentioned, you know, the other day about.
my distaste for the tush push.
The Philadelphia, Kansas City game drew 33.8 million viewers.
Basically, one of the most watched games in recent memory during the regular season or the
early portion of the regular season.
But already, the NFL viewership for this season, it's up 17% for the week two, the first
two weeks, which is one of the highest gains we've seen ever.
Philadelphia, KC, 33.8 million viewers.
Dallas, Philly, the Thursday night opener, did 28.3 million.
But remember, there was a one hour and three minute lightning delay.
I think a lot of people think that that game would have done more than the Philly KC game
would have done had it just played out without the long delay.
but there is no doubt that football still is the best live television product there is.
Nothing's even close.
Yes.
Now, it is important to note, not that it would change the outcome much, but, you know, they're using a new measuring system this year.
Yeah.
Do you know it?
known as as big data plus panel.
And it's supposed to capture viewers on digital platforms, you know, streaming.
Right.
And things like that more.
But this is an exact science.
Yeah.
Okay.
Yeah.
But you still can't deny that the numbers are overwhelmingly impressive.
No doubt.
All right.
What else did you have for the show today?
Well, you know, you made some accusations before I was, I came on the podcast.
He's been thinking about him the whole day.
This is exactly why I did it.
That I lead some kind of limited life.
Yeah.
You know?
That my life is limited.
Let's back up.
You had made a comment just, and it's the second or third time you've made this comment.
I think the other day you made the comment about, you know, Robert Redford, you know, movies
and, you know, which movies should be the ones that are at the top of the list.
And you said, you know, you can't really account for people's taste, bad, bad taste.
And I, you made the comment again today.
I won't say what you were discussing.
And I just said, yeah, that coming from the guy, what did I say?
From the guy who doesn't eat green vegetables.
That's a different kind of taste.
I said, this coming from a guy who's never eaten a green vegetable or a fruit.
And you said, well, that's a different kind of taste.
And I said, I'm not talking about literal taste.
I'm talking about, you know, occasionally just expanding your horizons a little bit.
And you got a little bit, you know, you got a little bit sensitive there.
So go ahead.
Tell me about how I did the other night.
Oh, I'm sure you did.
Yeah, what did you do?
I went to the Frederick Fair.
Well, that's expanding your horizons.
Yes.
Yeah.
It's the last time you've been to a fair.
It's been a long time since I've been to the Frederick Fair.
Fair, that's for sure.
Yeah.
Once the last time you had, you communed with cows and goats and things like that.
Oh, actually, actually, oh God, I probably shouldn't mention this because this was a very nice resort that I went to over the summer.
But they had, they had a zoo in which there were tigers and lions and bears and goats.
That's not the same.
I know.
It's a zoo.
I mean, I was right there.
You know, those and those with cows and chickens, you know, close enough that I could, I could reach out and touch them.
Right.
So, and you know, and I like the action of a fair.
You do?
I mean, carny people are my kind of people.
I really are.
So I like the whole, the noise, the lights.
I like all that.
And the Frederick Fair is pretty good.
Is it?
good side. Where is it? Yeah. In Frederick, downtown Frederick.
Yeah. I remember, and I don't even know if this exists anymore,
does Montgomery County still have that summer fair for like a week? Man, I think they do.
I remember. Every county still has their fair, plus there's a state fair down at Timonium
for Maryland I've never been to. So what kind of games do they have? Do they have, you know,
shooting ducks on a pond, basketball shoot, you know,
Papa's shot, what do you have?
Are they all fixed games?
How does it work?
Well, I mean, you have, you know, the typical games, basketball shooting,
you know, shooting a balloon filled with water and things like that.
You know, when I went to like the local carnival in East Shrewsburg growing up,
they had this thing we always played.
it was a mouse and it was a big circle that wheel that spun around with different colors
and they had holes at the end of the color and you had to bet which on which color the mouse would
run into once they let the mouse out and they started spinning the wheel I used to love playing
that that was great honestly I think I went to that Montgomery
County Fair a couple of times.
And I, you know, when I was much younger, I'm trying to think, when the kids were young,
I think we probably went to some sort of fair or two.
I don't know.
I can't remember.
Well, it's time to get out.
Get out a little bit.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Frederick Ferry.
Is it still going through this weekend?
Yes, it is.
Yeah.
Did they have, when you were talking about the spinning thing, I was thinking about,
remember the chore wheel?
No.
You don't remember the chore wheel in the office?
Yeah.
When they, nobody wanted to do the jobs and Pam created the wheel, the chore wheel.
Yeah, it's very funny.
But nobody really liked the chore wheel because basically when it landed, when it stopped spinning, it landed on a job.
It's like, you get to clean out the microwave oven.
Well, that's not.
So then they created a super tiny wheel with some fun things on it.
And then all of a sudden they were really excited to do the chores.
Yeah.
All right. What else?
One last thing.
Yes.
This weekend, I'll be at the game on Sunday and find out what's the latest in the great cigar smoking for.
Oh, I'm looking forward to that.
Security at Northwest Field.
Oh, I think they're going to be prepared for you.
I think that they have fixed it.
Let me just point out if you go online and you look at the online for Northwest Stadium,
it specifically says that is a smoking.
area. It's on the internet.
A guy better, I'm sure you're going to bring that with you in case you run into the guy that you,
by the way, decided to, you know, tap out against.
Well, I didn't tap out. I mean, again, I was, I was at work.
Well, you're kind of at work. You took a break to go out and smoke a cigar.
You were at work, but it was during your, because what is the, what are the times give you?
give you 30 minutes for smoking and lunch when you're working?
They give me 30 minutes.
You know, this guy, this was a guy with clipboard disease.
I mean, he loves the power that he has, you know, being a security guard.
So I sense when he asked my name was, and I said, you don't need to know my name, pal.
Then I was one step away.
Do you call him, pal?
Yeah, I did.
Yeah.
from being kicked out.
Yeah.
You know?
And being right would not,
you know, it's like being arrested.
Sometimes being right
doesn't matter.
Yeah.
Sounds like you
sounds like you may have had a bit of a
condescending, you know,
approach by calling them.
Well, because I was right.
I knew I was right.
I know, but once you get called pal or friend or champ,
you know, or slugger or governor.
It's, it's, you know, is you, you've injected a level of condescension,
sort of masking it is like a, you know, a term of friendliness that,
but I call you buddy all the time.
I know you do.
You know what, though?
I don't get angry at that buddy because you use buddy with everybody,
and it's not condescending.
But pal?
Nah.
Yeah, I don't know.
But he deserved.
All right, Amigo.
All right, Amigo.
All right, boss.
I'll talk to you on Tuesday.
Enjoy the game.
Can't wait to hear about the cigar smoking situation and how, you know, it plays out on Sunday.
Just be, you know, have the information there for him in case you got to deal with it.
I'm going to guess that they have cleared the way.
You had some people come in and say, no, no, no, this is Laverro.
This is his area.
This is what he does.
I think they'll be prepared for you.
Let me ask you one last.
question. What? Should I, if they say no, should I put up a fight? I think you've got to tell
if it's that same guy or a different guy, just say, no, actually, this is the smoking area.
I'm allowed to smoke here. I've been doing it for years. And should I light up? You can go get the
head of, you can go get the head of security and bring them over here and we'll, we'll get this thing.
And then just, what if the head of security says I can't smoke there either? Well, then we go
higher. Then we go higher. We go to Mark Ein, we go to Mitch Rails. We go right to the top. We go right
to the top. Okay. I'm calling you if they're dragging me out of the stadium. Okay. Call me if they're,
by the way, if I don't answer when you call me, I'll get right back to you. All right,
friend, Sparky. Okay, pal. All right, Tiger. I'll talk to you on Tuesday. I'm back tomorrow. Jay
Gruden preview of Washington Raiders, a pick. Smeltest
picks too.
