The Kevin Sheehan Show - DC Short On Stars
Episode Date: April 16, 2024Kevin and Thom today with a menu full of protein options. Plenty of Commanders' QB talk along with how badly DC needs a sports star were part of the discourse. You don't need it, but you're going to get it anyway.
The Kevin Cheon Show.
Here's Kevin.

Oh, she skies this.
On to the Bruins side of the table, Marshan collects.

Tommy's here.
I am here.
We've got a lot to get to on this Tuesday, April 16th.
Day after tax day, Tommy.
Got a little bit busy yesterday.
Did you file your taxes yesterday or did you file for an extension?
No, we filed out taxes a couple of weeks ago because we were getting money back.
Ah, getting money back.
That's a good situation.
Good for you.
Well, that's not going to happen next year.
Next year, we are going to basically supporting Uncle Sam because of a real estate transaction we had this year.
Yeah, I don't love this time of year. I'm not a big fan of it. It just, it's, it gets very tense at home. I'll leave it at that. We owe what? Yeah, we owe this amount and this is how we got to it. And we need a new accountant. We need, I've been telling you forever, we need a new.
account and it just goes on and on and I and I you know that may be true um but um you know I'm not
the only person that should be looking for the new accountant hey if you're a really good
accountant out there and you want to tweet me information or email me information might be
interested um no uh I our our account is a great job I've had some really bad years I mean
some years where the woman who does out taxes was about to cry knowing how much we were going
to wind up owing. But we got through them. Have you ever been audited?
Oh, yeah. Yeah, many, many years ago, when I used to do the taxes. And I pride in myself on being
very creative. And, and. And I, and I audited two years.
in a row.
And it wasn't the worst thing that ever happened to me.
In fact, I'd say, given everything that happened, I was satisfied with the outcomes.
And the third year, I just said, I got actually already three years, but the third year, it was done by mail.
And they weren't the most painful things I've ever gone through.
It was very painful, the one time we got audited.
But the outcome wasn't anywhere as bad as anywhere near as bad as I thought it would be.
And to be honest with you, I was surprised at how much room there was for negotiation.
Maybe that's the word.
I think we negotiated pretty well.
It was in odd circumstance and it wasn't necessarily our doing.
that was the last accountant before the one that we have right now,
who my significant other is ready to move on from.
Anyway, I hope everybody's tax day went well.
Yes.
One last thing about an audit.
What any audits I had?
It was up in Scrant.
And the guy was not going to allow a big deduction I took.
So I closed up my papers, and I said, well, there's no point going on.
If you're not going to allow that, let's move on the court, buddy.
And I started to leave, and he sat me down, and he came around to my way of thinking.
And I got at least half a loaf.
Right.
So that was something I did not realize.
I thought when you get audited, uh-oh, whatever, you pay it because it's not changing, no matter what you do.
And I remember sitting down with a very nice woman from, you know, the IRS.
And, you know, we went through everything.
And, you know, some of the things that they were auditing us about weren't what they thought they were and other things they did.
But there was room to kind of haggle a little bit, just like you did.
You know, really?
Yeah.
I don't get to take that as a deduction.
Well, I'll see you in court.
And what they really want is they do.
want the thing to end and get settled and get paid.
Yes, especially if you're a penny-a-any guy.
They don't want to spend their money on their lawyers taking a small timer to court.
Right.
Yeah.
All right.
I want to read something to you.
We got this from David.
David wrote us the other day.
Subject heading, the great antihistamine debate of 2024.
Dear Kevin and Tom, long-time listener, first time reaching out, love your show.
It is always the first podcast I listen to.
I usually love and appreciate your perspective on things that you and Tom are experts in.
I find your surprisingly frequent debates on medical issues, equal parts, hilarious and frustrating.
Nothing more entertaining than listening to two people who actually know very little about the topic
have certitude about their opinions.
It's probably how you feel listening to us weekend warriors debate all things sports.
Your recent debate regarding Benadryl finally prompted me to respond.
As the unofficial gonacologist of your program, please allow me to elucidate a few things.
First, firstly, well done.
Benadryl, Allegra, Zyrtec, and Claritin are all.
antihistamines. None of them are preventative. That was definitely the word I used for Allegra.
I said when I meant when I meant I didn't mean when I said preventative David, I didn't mean like it would
prevent you from having allergies. I just meant it was more of a long lasting 24 hour rather
than dealing with acute symptoms. But anyway, I may be wrong on that too. David continues.
They are antagonists to histamine receptors.
Why Benadryl feels differently, and it does for me, is that it crosses the blood-brain barrier and impacts cognition and has sometimes significant sedating effects.
That's how Benadryl works for me.
It's very sedating, which is why I can't pop a Benadryl before doing three hours of radio or even an hour with you.
the other three have been modified to not cross the blood brain barrier.
The other three being Allegra Zyrotech and Claritin.
And so usually do not have any sedating effects.
They last 24 hours because of their pharmacoconetic characteristics.
None of them are decongestants.
Secondly, the common over-the-counter decongestant is Sudafed,
which works by constricting blood vessels, thus leading to
less nasal congestion. Yes, I do know that pseudofed is a decongestant. A lot of people will take
Sudafed before they get on an airplane to keep their ears from, you know, really getting clogged up.
So he writes, so in short, Benadryl-Alegra, Zyrtec Claritin equals antihistamine. Sudafed decongestin.
Feel free to quote me as long as you do. As you do what I make all my friends do when they ask for
my medical opinion, use it as long as you tell them your gonacologist told you so.
Thank you, David.
So I did send back a, I said, thanks, we're definitely going to read this.
And I said, but doesn't clareden, because I remember clarendon used to have a clarendin D,
which I thought stood for decongestant.
And he said, yes, Claritin D and Allegra D add the decongestant to the antihistamine.
they are both brand names. The active ingredient is also sold as a store brand generic. Generics work
just as well, usually, at about half the cost. I always use generic when available. I do as well.
Thank you, David, very much. I guess my overarching theme to that conversation was,
if you have really bad allergies when the pollen gets thick like it is, like yesterday, when it hit 88 degrees, I mean, it was hot yesterday.
And you're sneezing and you can see the pollen everywhere.
I just don't think that the 24-hour options, they don't work for me.
Benadryl works for me.
But I can't take Benadryl when I have to speak clearly or close to clearly for several hours a day.
Thank you, David.
That was very nice of you.
This came from Dan.
Dan listens to us from Asheville, North Carolina,
which Tommy is a beautiful part of the country.
Yes, it is.
It's a great city.
It really is.
He writes,
Fandul put together a list of the current top ten athletes in D.C.,
and the list could not be more pathetic.
Alex Ovechkin, who is way past his prime, is at number one.
Number two is Terry McClure, who was not even a top 10 player at his position.
Number three is John Allen, who didn't make the Pro Bowl last year.
Number four is Kyle Kuzma, who's not even a top 50 NBA player.
This has to be the lowest point in D.C. sports history for Star Power,
as not one player on the list currently is worth the price of admission to watch play.
Even more of a reason for the Washington football team to swing for the Fed.
and draft the elite talent of Jaden Daniels at number two, we need hope.
I didn't read that because he added Jaden Daniels there at the end.
I read it because I actually went to look for this top 10 fan duel.
This fan duel, I guess, just launched in D.C.
As a betting option, I think Gambit was the other DC,
who bet MGM was an option to.
But yeah, when you think about it,
it. I was looking for the entire
top 10 list, and I just could not find
it. But
who has star power
on any of the four pro
sports teams that we have? Is it
McKenzie Gore now? He's pitching pretty
well. And by the way, the Nats are playing pretty
well. Yeah, Mitchell
Parker last night. They're
like this kid, his left-hander,
who they called up,
gave up two runs and five innings
against the powerful Dodgers lineup,
wound up with a win, and
his debut.
So yeah,
the Nats are looking great.
You know,
it's funny,
because the biggest star
besides Lovetskin
and,
you know,
McLaren and Allen,
is probably
at AAA Rochester,
James Wood.
Right.
He's just tearing up the ball,
and he's going to be here
before you know it.
And that guy,
that kid has star power.
Okay.
I think Mitchell Parker,
by the way. I think I read this this morning. Correct me if I'm wrong.
That he's the first Nat's pitcher to win his debut performance since Strasbourg.
Yes. Yes, since that 2010 start by Strasbourg.
They like him. And that's good because they need young pitching.
Their young pitching depth is not as deep as their position player depth.
But, you know, he's right about the Star Power.
And I remember when it was Ovechkin and Max Scherzer and Harper and John Wall?
And it was at one time it was, it was very, very exciting the Star Power in this town.
Not that it translated totally to championships everywhere, but,
It wasn't long ago that we had our share of stars in Washington.
So I think it's an interesting point about Daniels at the end
and the opportunity for really whomever they take at number two.
I mean, it's not like Drake May wouldn't be a star if he turns out to be good
or J.J. McCarthy turns out to be a star.
He wouldn't, or it turns out to be good, he wouldn't be a star.
I think there's this massive opportunity right now for the football team, for the commanders, as they are known right now, and for this player that they select it number two, because it really is a city, to Dan's point, lacking in star power. This came from Lute. Lute said, you've convinced everybody that Daniels is the guy. You better be right. At least worst case, he'll be fun to watch for a year.
or two. First of all, I haven't convinced anybody. He's my guy. A lot of people out there like
May. A lot of people like McCarthy. A lot of people are like no on anybody if it's not Caleb
Williams. I mean, come on, man. Do you think anybody really is listening to anybody in media
espouse their very limited, you know, opinions on these guys? But I think that you don't draft
Jaden Daniels because he's got star power, more star power than the other guys, which by the way,
he may have a little bit more than the other guys except for Caleb Williams. You're drafting the
guy that's going to give you the best chance to win for a long period of time. And if it doesn't
start next year or the year after, that's okay. You know, you're looking for the guy. And if it's
Drake May that you think in 2026, 27, 28, 29, 2030,
you're going to be winning 11, 12, 13 games a year with a top five quarterback in the league,
but it's going to take him some time to get there.
You draft him.
And that's what they're going to do.
They're going to draft the guy that gives him the – I think they are the best chance to win.
But, man, this town needs a star badly.
And here's the thing.
the NFL comes with star power automatically attached to the player.
I mean, the profile of the NFL is so much bigger now that, I mean, the fact that, look,
who we talked about, McClorn, John Allen, they're not stars, but they're stars because they play in the NFL.
Okay?
So they automatically get to, so really, it doesn't matter what the personality of the quarterback is
sort of style play he has, you're right. If he's successful and if people are excited about the
way he plays, then he'll be a star. He'll be the star in this town. Not just a star,
the star, the star. Yeah, let me amend something that I just said that this town needs a star
badly. I think a lot of people, you know, gravitate towards that. For me, for the teams that I am
into, it's not about having star players. It's about winning. I mean, that's all I want them to do.
I want the skins. I want the wizards. I want the Nats to win. You know, that is much more fun,
much more satisfying. Because like tonight, tonight's game with the Flyers, God, it's been a while
since we've had a game like this in town. It's not even a playoff game, but it is
for all intents and purpose is a playoff game because if they lose, they're out, if they win, they're in.
We haven't had games like this in a while. Nats haven't been to the postseason since 2019.
The Caps, it's been two years. Washington had that one COVID-year playoff game the Skins did against Tampa,
which was, you know, flukish at 7 and 9. The Wizards, it's been a couple of years since they've been in the postseason.
We haven't had any of these true big games.
love, like tonight, I'm not a massive Caps fan, but I am an Alex Ovechkin fan, and I'm going to be
watching tonight. The tension associated with a game like tonight's game, I like that stuff.
I don't like watching, let's just say Jordan Poole didn't become, you know, sort of a caricature
at times of himself during the season. And let's just say that he averaged 34 a game this year
and was one of the top three scorers in the league for a bad team.
I couldn't have cared less had that happened in watching him.
Like, I want these games.
I want these important games.
So Jaden Daniels, I don't think this group, I mean, we may learn differently.
I don't think this group is going to draft the guy that they see as the most immediate star power.
Although I do think, by the way, let me just say this.
I do think if they draft Jaden Daniels, you know, with Caleb Williams out of the conversation,
they're going to sell some tickets.
They're going to sell more tickets than maybe if they took J.J. McCarthy or Drake May.
Not by a lot, but by a little bit.
You mentioned, and this is your personal preference, that you wouldn't care if, let's say, Jordan Pool,
became a punchline here, basically turned out to be.
the player that a lot of people thought he might be
and became one of the top scores in the league on a bad team.
I think for fans, and I can remember these days
of rooting for the Mets in the early days,
there's something to be said for having a great player
on a bad team that fans can point to and say,
well, yeah, well, we got him. He's ours.
Okay, there is some benefit.
and some feel good that comes with having a star player, even on a bad team.
Maybe not for you, but I think for a lot of fans, people who say, yeah, well, we stink, but we got that guy.
I'm trying to think if I've ever felt that way before.
I mean, that's the way we felt about Seaver Mets fans when he first came up,
and the Mets weren't still losing.
And we said, well, yeah, they're a little.
But look, we got that guy now.
That guy's one of our guys.
Well, I think the ultimate in D.C. would be Sunny.
That would be the ultimate example of your seever, would be Sunny Jury.
That's right.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Sonny was one of the best quarterbacks and one of the most exciting quarterbacks in the NFL on bad teams.
Yes.
But look, it's better to have stars than winning.
but I think stars with losing also gives a level of satisfaction to a fan base.
That's starving for anything.
Yeah, when Beal led the league in scoring a couple of years ago, I couldn't have cared less.
It was a bad team.
I'm trying to think of an example of any of the teams that I really have had passion for in my life.
if I ever really got into a player when they were playing on bad teams.
I bet there is an example of it, but for me, the two teams that I've got the most passion for professionally,
growing up, they were both great.
They were both really good.
The Redskins and the bullets were both really good all of those years, you know?
and then the bullets didn't become good.
Like I'm trying to think during those years,
I mean, it's not like I was a big Jeff Malone fan
or a big Jeff Ruland fan.
Yeah, that's that much.
I do remember being mesmerized
by some of those Bernard King Knights for Washington,
but those weren't good teams, but God, could he score?
But no, I, they got to get a player.
that ends up being a legit upper-tier NFL quarterback.
God, this is such a big pick for them.
Such a big pick.
And, you know, I think people feel better than they have in a long time
about the draft prospects of, you know, or the draft evaluation anyway.
Well, I think they feel better about everything because of the new ownership.
Right.
tonight the caps by the way if you're wondering like they control they win they're in it doesn't
matter what kind of win it can come in regulation it can come in overtime or a shootout if they
beat the flyers tonight they're in the flyers now this is interesting because there will be
multiple games going on of significance in the eastern conference Detroit's going to be playing
Montreal. They rallied to beat the Canadians last night. They still have a chance. Pittsburgh still has a
chance. They play the Islanders tonight. The Islanders clinched that third spot in the Metropolitan
Division. Actually, the Penguins game is tomorrow night. Excuse me. They play the Islanders
tomorrow night, which I think is the final night of the regular season, or maybe Thursday night is. But
tonight is the final night of the regular season for Washington.
It's the final night of the regular season for Detroit.
It's the final night of the regular season for Philadelphia.
And the Flyers, interestingly, could be scoreboard watching because if some things
happen, they could be eliminated or potentially on the verge of being eliminated as the
game's going on.
Philadelphia has to beat Washington in regulation.
All right, so they have to win in regulation.
If the game goes to overtime, Tommy, it's over for Philly.
They are eliminated.
But Washington still needs to win if the game goes to overtime.
But Philly has to beat Washington and then Detroit and Pittsburgh.
Pittsburgh plays tomorrow night.
Detroit plays tonight.
They have to lose their games in regulation.
So tonight, as an example, while the caps are playing.
Philadelphia, it'll be Detroit playing Montreal at the same exact time.
So if somehow Detroit gets out to like a four to nothing lead, you know, at the end of the
first period, Philadelphia is done.
And that could work to the advantage of the caps tonight.
We'll see.
Unless the flyers just want to eliminate the caps.
But the caps are the only one of these teams, Washington, Detroit, Pittsburgh, and
Philly that controls their own destiny here or their path into the postseason.
So if they win, they're in.
There you go.
If they lose, they're out because Detroit would end up or Philly would end up.
Actually, they could lose, my fault.
They could lose and get one point and still get in.
but Detroit and Pittsburgh would both have to lose in regulation.
Yeah, I'm pretty sure.
Is this not the anti-histomy conversational over again?
Well, it has to be true because the caps currently have 89 points, right?
Okay.
Pittsburgh has 88, the Flyers have 87, the Red Wings have 89.
So if the Red Wings lost, they wouldn't get any points.
if the
if the penguins lost
they'd end up with 88
the flyers
would if the caps lost in overtime but got a point
the flyers wouldn't reach 90
so the caps would be at 90 points and they
yeah they would be in
so there's still a way for them to get in
with one point
there isn't a way for them to get in
with no points tonight
So they have to get that game to overtime to have a chance.
And then if they win it, regulation or overtime they're in.
Did I do a decent job or just a mediocre job in explaining the playoff situation for the capitals?
Look, I'm sure it was a mediocre job.
It was pretty mediocre.
You should be proud.
I'm proud of mediocrity.
Yeah.
We have several other things to get to, which we will start when we come back right after these words from a few.
of our sponsors.

We do have some quarterback talk coming up here shortly.
Draft quarterback talk, more of it, getting kind of old.
I can't wait for this draft.
I know.
I mean, you've got to be sick of it, right?
Aren't you?
Yes.
Oh, my God.
I am.
We got like another week and a half of this stuff.
Nine days.
Nine more days.
I mean, nothing changes.
You know, it's Caleb Williams, Jane Daniels, Drake May, J.J. McCarthy.
Every time we discuss this.
I know, but I am, let me just say, I am very,
interested in this, I am. I don't know what else to say about it. I don't want to bite the hand
that's feeding us right now because this has been really good. I know. People can't seem to get
enough of it because there's some people that think it should be Caleb Williams, Drake May,
Jane Daniels. And that's where the interest and the debate comes in. In terms of their order.
Yeah. So it's funny because I was talking to a friend of mine before you and I started to record this podcast, which we're doing earlier today. But he called me on my way in. And we were just talking about the quarterbacks. And I just said, dude, I'm done. I'm done with you. I'm done with this conversation. I said, I think we've had this same conversation like three or four times. What I have tried to do, like Cooley's been phenomenal.
Cooley came on over the weekend and did film breakdowns.
It's really funny because I forget if he said it yesterday,
because he came on yesterday in sort of a mailbag segment, Tommy,
where we read some very good questions and some very interesting comments.
But he said to me, and I think it was maybe this was recorded or not,
he said, do you think it's an advantage for me or a disadvantage that I didn't watch any college
football really this year. I watched Michigan because they were in the semis and they were in the
national championship game and I watched the game against Ohio State. I watched a lot of NFL,
but I just didn't watch any college football. He actually said to me, I never heard Drake May's
name until three weeks ago. And I thought about that and I said, I don't know if it's an
advantage or disadvantage. I think... Okay, wait a minute, wait a minute. I don't, you know,
Let's think about what we're saying here.
If I was exposed less to information, I'd be better informed.
Well, the ultimate, you know, evaluation comes from watching the film.
You know, watching the tape, watching and getting some, you know, idea, context-wise, the significance of the game, you know, that they're playing in.
but Cooley knows how to evaluate tape.
He knows what to look for.
I know.
I know he does, and it may not make any difference if he had watched the games,
but I'm not going to buy into the notion that is an advantage not to have watched them play live.
Okay, that's fair, and I actually wouldn't even buy into the advantage that it's better to not have the influence of other people talking about these players.
for as long as they've been talking about these players
because I promise you
he's the kind of person that wouldn't give a shit
what anybody else said.
So I
what I got and what everybody got
was him sitting down watching
three, four games. He actually watched
more of Daniels and
McCarthy after
even the film breakdown
the other day and he's going to, he's getting to
May and Caleb Williams and Michael
Pennix Jr. now. But
you know you're getting, here's what you're not getting, as I said the other day.
You're not getting some dude that's played Madden for 10 years and now has his own mock draft,
his own board, and somehow is finding his way to podcasts and radio shows.
But no one knows who that person is.
Tommy, I think I could put somebody on the show and just say, you know, hey, so Joe Turner's with us.
Joe is a quarterback expert with Turner Sports and really love his opinion.
And he could come on and talk for 35 minutes and say something about, let's just say,
Bo Nix.
I think Bo Nix is the number three quarterback in this draft or the number two quarterback in this draft.
And I bet you people would pick it up and run with it.
And somehow Joe Turner, who's nobody, would be out there talking about
Bo Nix is the number two quarterback in this draft.
Well, yeah.
Yeah, there's a lot of overreaction.
I mean, there's certain names that should mean something to you when he speak.
Like Chase, like Chase Daniels, he means something to me when he speaks.
You know, he played the league for what, like 13 years?
Every bit of it.
Yeah, so when he expresses their certain opinions that if you've got to be in four-fam,
You have to become the conclusion at this point that some people's opinions mean more than others.
And a guy like Chase Daniel, so it's just throwing him out as an example of a guy who I would trust.
You know, I suppose, but you're right.
I mean, one little spark from Joe Turner sets off a forest fire on the Internet.
Yeah.
And that's how it's starting.
And it could be literally somebody with zero credibility.
Like I've had listeners reach out to me to say, I just heard this guy on this show, you've got to put them on.
And I'm like, I won't mention the person's name or the show, but somebody reached out to me the other day to say,
you've got to have this guy on the show.
And he mentioned his name.
And I said, oh, he's doing film breakdown?
He played for the Giants, right?
Because the name, I thought he played for the Giants.
he goes, no, no, no, he's, he lives in Europe somewhere, but he's a big NFL fan, and he's, he's
breaking down film. I'm like, well, I, why would I, why am I going to put him on? Like, I had Kurt
Warner on the show a couple of weeks ago. I had Cooley doing film breakdown. I had Merrill Hodge,
who's a former player. I've had some guys who literally, this is what they get paid to do, you know, to
evaluate drafts.
and they've been around doing it for a while.
Now, I'm not diminishing the potential of this person
because I don't know anything about him,
but there are a lot of those people out there that have made their way.
Like Joe Turner, if he came on with me and said something as outrageous
as Bo Nix is the number two quarterback,
people would be calling him to put him on their show.
They would.
And I'm not saying it's because it's my show.
If Joe Turner went on any show, and what he said, it doesn't take a lot for something to go viral right now as it relates to this draft, maybe more than any other.
But go ahead.
What were you going to say?
Look, guys like Cooley and Merle Hodge.
And look, we've had this, we always have this argument with sports writers.
You know, and we hear this from players.
You didn't play the game.
So how can you make judgments about it?
Well, you could make reasonable judgments about what you see,
but when you're talking about actually evaluating talent,
you do have to have the knowledge of what you're looking at.
And they have a special knowledge of the game that most of the rest of us don't have.
And you've got to recognize that, respect that.
And I also respect people who didn't play the game,
but have been around the game, you know, maybe played it to a certain level,
have been around it, but have really studied it.
Now, I'm not going to more likely than not take that person's opinion or view over, you know,
a true evaluating eye.
Like, there's so, Tommy, there's so much data.
There's so much utilization of the data in different ways.
You know, the PFFs of the world, the Sumer Sports guys of the world.
Like, I have Eric Eager and I have some of these guys.
on the show all the time. I actually enjoy the conversations.
But I only have the guys on that recognize that their data is just one piece of the evaluation.
You know, some of the data is perhaps significant. Some of it perhaps isn't.
A lot of it has context, believe it or not, and isn't absolute.
But, yeah, it's interesting. I mean, I'm a football fan.
you know, and a lot of you who are listening are football fans,
and we like to think that we know what we're watching,
but this is a hard thing to do for the people that get paid to do it.
They don't get it right, the majority of the time.
It doesn't mean that we can't have favorites and preferences and have reasons why.
I definitely have a preference here.
I loved watching Jaden Daniels as a college quarterback.
I see a guy that is going to be,
that it's going to have a chance at the pro level to be really special.
But I don't dislike some of the other guys.
Like I think Caleb Williams, if he were available,
I would probably take him over anybody else.
Right.
But let me just stop you with your point of view here for a second.
You saw a lot of Shane Daniels this year,
and you really liked him, and that was your guy.
So you're in a position at that point,
I'm not saying you're close-minded, but you have to be convinced otherwise at that point,
because you have staked out a position.
You like this guy.
I watch, but I watch those other guys, too, because I watch a lot of college football.
I know you do.
But you came to the conclusion that you like this guy.
This is who I like.
Convince me why I shouldn't pick him.
Even if that convincing includes, you know, these other guys are better or this guy is
better that's part of the convincing, but you're operating from a position of one quarterback.
Don't you think the commanders are in the same position at this point?
Don't you think this team has a guy that they think they want to draft?
And from now until draft night, they're going to have to be convinced otherwise.
So my answer to you, you asked something similar, I think last week or the week before,
and I said, no.
I think they're going through the process.
and I think there's still a lot left, including top 30 visits,
which, by the way, went on yesterday with Jaden Daniels,
and today with May and McCarthy in some order.
I think Pennix Jr., too, is coming into town.
But I think now, I think they have a preference.
Yeah, I think they've got their guy.
They're not robots.
I think they've got their...
I mean, they have had a guy that they wanted.
Does that mean that's who they're going to draft?
No, not necessarily.
I mean, because like you said, stuff comes up between now and draft night that could dramatically change their minds.
But, I mean, they're human beings.
They have to have a, I mean, Adam Peters had to have a preference going into the draft of the guy he really liked.
That doesn't mean that was the guy they were going to draft.
I think they have their guy.
and I think that something needs to, would have to happen that would be pretty dramatic for them to move on from that guy to another guy.
I also think now more than I have previously, that Adam Peters specifically has liked a guy all along more than the other guys.
It also wouldn't surprise me if Dan Quinn has had a guy too all along.
And I do think that that guy is Jaden Daniels.
We'll see nine days from now.
I think that's a reasonable guess.
But I think that they right now have him at the top of their board for the number two pick.
But things change.
And by the way, there's no doubt.
And everybody has said this.
And I think you and I both agree.
This is not an organization that talks anymore.
You know, you can't just kind of pick up the phone and have random conversations and end up having a conversation that leads to something where you're like, hmm, that's interesting.
No, they are buttoned up in a way that they haven't been in a long, long time.
And by the way, they've made some hires in their organization that have really important.
depressed people around the league the last two days.
So let's get to that.
We'll do that right after these words from a few of our sponsors.
Hey guys, most of us are interested in our mental and physical well-being to a certain degree.
And with that in mind, I'd like to welcome and introduce a new sponsor to the podcast.

All right, Tommy, tell us about Shelly's.
Look, Capps fans.
Shelly's is a home away from home for Caps fans.
It's just a few blocks from the Capitol One arena.
And it's not unusual to see Shelly's back room,
the great cigar bar at 1331 F Street, Northwest in the district,
to see the bar filled with Caps fans before the game and after the game.
Now, this game is on the road in Philly.
So if you want to be with cast fans who are probably going to want to, you know, watch this together
because it's going to dictate the future, the playoff future for this team,
go to Shelley's back room because you can have a victory cigar if the cast win.
You can't have a victory cigar at Joe's Sports Bar out in Bethesda if the cast win.
You can have it at Shelley's back room.
You can celebrate in style.
The way Alex Olvechkin would celebrate if he had the choice.
Okay, you can find out more by going to shelley's backroom.com.
They have eight high-definition TVs all around the room, the two rooms that they have.
They have great seating, comfortable couches, big, comfortable chairs.
And it's not unusual to see some people in cats jerseys sitting there watching cats on TV at Shelley's back room.
You know, it seems like every year of your event, it always coincides because you always have it in early May.
And it's May 6th, Shelly's Cigars and Curve Balls, Tommy's charitable event that draws most of the stars around town.
They'll be there, all of them. Doc Walker will be there.
Davy Martinez may show up.
Mike Rizzo may show up.
Lots of people will be there.
But it seems like every...
Penn Harvey will be.
there. Ken Harvey's going to be there. Great pass rusher for the Redskins. He played for the Redskins.
It seems like every year during that event, there's a Caps playoff game going on. Not last year,
but it seems like every year, we have the event, we do the auction, and there's the Caps games always going on.
And then everybody gets back to conversations, cigars, and people are paying attention to whatever playoff game they're playing.
that's, you know, like the first round.
Well, yeah, it would be the first round, probably, the end of the first round.
Yeah, and usually, you know, I've had, you know, Bob McDonald's, the great singer who does the National Anthem.
Yeah.
At Cap teams, you know, he's a regular at cigars and curveballs, but there have been years he hasn't been able to contend because he had National Anthem duties at Capitol One Arena for a net for a cap's playoff game.
So yeah, there is usually that atmosphere going on at the same time.
Exactly.
Hey, rate us and review us if you get a chance, especially on Apple and Spotify.
This from Falcon Hoya, he gave us five stars, Tommy, and he writes,
Kevin, you seem to have the same allergy problem that I do.
Allegra, Claritin, and Zyrtec, just don't do it for me either.
Try Allegra D or Claritin D.
The D is for decongestine.
Man, we've got a lot of feedback on our antihistamine and decongestine talk.
That gives it an extra kick, similar to Benadryl.
Now, I don't know if Falcon Hoy is a doctor here.
We've got, you know, Dr. Dave weighing in on this.
He said, you need to go to the pharmacy window, though, to get it.
I didn't realize that you needed to go to the pharmacy window to get Allegra D or Claritin D.
But I guess you do.
But my go-to is the generic version of Claritin D from Costco.
Kirkland brand Aller Clear D, just $4.79 for a 15-day supply.
That's a good deal.
You're welcome.
Oh, the show is good two of five stars.
Closed quote.
Thank you, Falcon Hoy.
You could enjoy the show whether you're medicated or not.
Yeah.
All right.
made a couple of hires yesterday.
And the first hire, and I talked about this briefly on the podcast yesterday,
they hired a guy by the name of Dave Garty to be the team's senior VP of football initiatives.
Now, I mentioned on the show yesterday because the following information wasn't out there
when I was recording the podcast, that I didn't know what he was going to do in terms of these in-game
management duties, which was part of the job description. I'm like, I wonder if he's going to be in
the replay booth. I wonder if he's going to be on the headset with Dan Quinn, you know, telling him
when to go for two or when to go for fourth down. Well, Nikki Javala reported, Garty will handle some
in-game management duties and support the commander's coaching staff and front office on health
and safety guidelines.
And she wrote,
Garty's expected to be on the headset during games.
His emphasis in season will be on the coaching side.
Interesting.
Now, I know the guy that was on the headset with Ron the last couple of years.
Doug Drury is his name.
And I don't know if this is a replacement for Doug.
Now, he's a senior VP of football initiatives.
It sounds like he's got a lot of responsibilities, Tommy,
but maybe he's leaving the league office because he wants to be involved on game day with a team.
And it sounds like he's going to have that opportunity.
Look, his father was Joe Gardy, who was a legendary hopster football coach
and also an assistant coach for many years with the New York Jets.
So he comes from a football family.
This guy, Dave Gartney, played quarterback at Brown University.
So he certainly knows the game.
He's got a tremendous background.
He's a lawyer, you know, like many of these guys are,
and highly regarded according to what I've read about him.
Yeah, but my point being is that this is a guy that's been working in the league
office. He hasn't been with a team.
Now we understand he's going to be on the headset.
He was in labor relations, but he has a football background.
No, no, no. I'm not suggesting that he's not capable of doing it.
What I'm suggesting to you is that he took this job because he wants the action of being
involved on Game Day, and Washington's going to give it to him.
He must be, I mean, has he proven the ability somehow to,
to be excellent at replay review, excellent at, you know, fourth down or two-point, you know, conversion
decisions?
I don't know.
Maybe they mentioned health and safety issues.
Right.
Maybe he's going to be the guy watching from the field say, hey, you got to get that guy out.
Maybe.
Maybe.
I'm just, you know, I'm wondering if he took this job because, A, the organization is a much
better spot than when Brian Lafamina
took the job, which as I
mentioned yesterday, Tommy, one of
Tom's greatest calls.
Hey, Brian, a little advice
for you, rent,
don't buy. And you
said, I give it,
it's less than a year that he'll
make, that he'll, that he'll, that'll be here.
And it was, it was like nine months
before they ran him out.
Yeah, no, I mean, when
when Nicky writes, he's going to be on the headset
during games, his
emphasis in season will be on the coaching side.
I think that this guy wants to get more involved in football.
But, I mean, I think when fans hear that,
and I think it's not unreasonable to think, well, what the hell is he going to do?
I mean, don't they have enough cooks in the kitchen?
You certainly think they do.
You know? Yeah.
Isn't Cliff Kingsbury and Dan Quinn, you know,
and every other assistant coach, they have enough.
They need somebody else on the headset,
unless he has very specific duties
that really do not deal with the actual football strategy,
but maybe outcomes of football situations.
Like I said, health and safety issues.
I don't think this guy's going to be up there giving him football advice.
I don't know.
I mean, not, you know, hey, we should, you know,
attack their zone defense differently,
might be the guy in the booth doing what Doug had done with Ron the last couple of years,
kind of telling him, you know, when to review, when to throw the challenge flag, when not to
throw the challenge flag, et cetera, which by the way, you know, some of these guys in this
booth, they don't have what you think they have at their disposal in terms of replay angles.
But yeah, so everybody seems to be very impressed with this high.
So we'll find out, I'm sure, as we go along here, what his specific job responsibilities are.
And then this morning, Washington announced that they hired Kirton Mehta as the team's vice president of public affairs.
Joe Maloney was in that position before.
I know that I've mentioned, and I think maybe even you have mentioned, I don't want to speak for you.
Joe is actually for many years one of the normal people in the organization.
He really was.
And he was the guy working for the stadium,
basically dealing with Virginia, Maryland and D.C.
And all of the people with respect to the stadium stuff.
He's the point guy.
And this guy's replacing Joe who left to go work for the Gaming Association,
the Sports Gaming Association.
This guy, I actually know people who know this guy, and they had told me about him like a week ago and said he's really smart, really good guy.
He's going to be reporting, it would appear, to Jason Wright, who was quoted in the press release.
And that's the only other thing I wanted to clarify.
I think yesterday I said this guy, Dave Gardy, this is not a Jason Wright side of the building higher.
This is a football side of the building higher, whereas this guy, Kirton Mehta, is a, you know, Jason Wright side of the building guy.
So there you go.
Anything on this guy that you're interested in?
Not particularly.
He's got an impressive background, spent a lot of time on Capitol Hill, working with different legislators and as a lobbyist.
and, I mean, he seems, you know, very qualified.
What's interesting is, when did Jason Wright go to Northwest?
Jason Wright went to Northwestern, right?
Well, he went to the University of Shish.
Yeah, he went to Northwestern undergrad.
Yes.
Yeah.
Yeah, that's where he played football in college, right?
Right, correct.
So when was that?
The 90s.
When that was.
Early 90s, I'm guessing.
Early to mid-90s?
Okay, hang on a second.
Let's see where that was.
Nope, it's 2000 to 2003.
So he finished it Northwestern in 2003.
Didn't he go to the University of Chicago, though, to get his MBA?
Let's stick with Northwestern here.
Yeah.
Okay.
Meta went to Northwestern as well, around the same time.
He earned a bachelor's degree in math and economics from Northwestern University in 2014.
in 2004.
There you go.
So we went to college at Northwestern
at the same time that Jason Wright did.
Just FYI.
Did he play football?
Doesn't say he did.
I'm sure they would have said something
if he did.
Yeah.
Okay.
Two more things before we wrap up the show
because somebody just actually sent this to me.
It's a story that ESPN.com just put out.
Jeremy Fowler, titled NFL Draft Quarterback
Tears, more quarterback draft talk, Tommy.
Scouts and execs.
You mean tears?
Like crying?
Crying tears?
Yeah, crying tears.
Which, by the way, probably, you know,
half the teams that draft quarterbacks in the first round will have tiers eventually.
Scouts and execs stack up 11 quarterbacks.
Tier one is Caleb Williams by himself.
Tier two is Jaden Daniels first, followed by Drake May.
Tier three is, our tier two and a half is J.J. McCarthy.
Tier 3 is Pennix Jr. and Knicks.
But he sent me to this quote on Jaden Daniels.
Daniels threw with precision at his pro day,
with Commander's Offensive Coordinator Cliff Kingsbury,
noticeably excited by what he saw.
The feedback on Daniels' team interviews was positive
with one AFC coach calling his presence,
quote, like the cool kid that everyone wants to talk to and be around, closed quote, which will help him in locker room settings.
I'm just looking through the Drake May thing just to give equal time for those of you that will get upset to see if there are any quotes or if there's anything written in here about any Washington coach or Peters or anybody else.
I don't see those names mentioned.
but in the Cliff Kingsbury, noticeably excited.
Did anybody else report that Cliff Kingsbury was noticeably excited during Jaden Daniels' pro day with the way he threw with precision?
You know, Ben, if he was, he would notice it, because he wasn't particularly noticeably excited at his introductory press conference.
I don't know he wasn't.
No, he wanted that to end quickly.
And I don't think we'll ever, he's going to do the bare minimum, which would be that Thursday during the season.
I don't know, he's probably got some responsibilities during the preseason as well.
All right.
Last thing.
Tonight, Tommy, your favorite time of the year, the NBA playoffs get underway with the playing rounds.
And I mentioned this on the podcast yesterday.
The Lakers play New Orleans tonight in the first game.
the Warriors play the Kings in the second game.
The first game is the seventh versus eighth place matchup,
which means the winner is in as the seven seed.
The second game, the eighth versus, the ninth versus tenth place teams,
Golden State and Sacramento, the loser is out completely.
The winner then plays the loser of the first game for the eighth seed on Thursday night.
So I mentioned yesterday that,
the seven seed in the West has to face Denver in the first round.
The eight seed gets Oklahoma City in an eight one matchup.
OKC finished number one overall in the West.
The youngest team in the current format, well, the eight team format of the NBA
playoffs to ever qualify as a one seed.
I mean, they are loaded with young talent.
But, you know, most people think this is an older person's game and that they're not going to win the title this year, even though they're the one seed.
And so I suggested yesterday, and this would really make a sham of the games tonight or the first game tonight, that the Lakers should essentially tank the game tonight.
They should lose on purpose.
They should sit LeBron.
They should sit Anthony Davis.
Let New Orleans win the game and get the seven seed and face it.
Denver and then take your shot in a game against the Warriors Kings winner on Thursday night
to get the 8 seed to face Oklahoma City. And I think that's the right move. Because if you're
the Lakers and you're LeBron and you're Anthony Davis, you're not playing to make the playoffs at this
point. You're playing to win it all. If they got beat in the second game and didn't qualify for a
best of seven first round. So be it. Tommy, they have not beaten Denver in two years.
Most of the games have been double-digit margins. They got swept by Denver in the Western
Conference finals last year. They cannot beat Denver in a best of seven. They could beat Oklahoma
City, a very inexperienced team in the first round. So do you think, what would it mean?
Would you be interested if they went into this playing game and tanked it more than you would if they were playing to win it?
Well, you know what? I think I'd have the same level of interest.
I know, but the former gives you something to really talk about.
I think you're right. I think that's a good strategy. I think you're right. But my interest would be the same.
whether they tanked, whether they won, whether they walked off the court and walked into the sunset, I would could care what.
No, if they tanked an actual playoff game, that would give you something to really mock the NBA over.
A friend of mine said to me, you know, there's plenty of material there.
They don't need to create new material.
A friend of mine said last night, well, by that logic, New Orleans should be trying to tank also.
Yes, they should be.
Nobody should want to play Denver.
The difference is New Orleans with their young team, they want to be in the playoffs.
The Lakers, like the difference could be literally two games, meaning if they lost tonight and then lost against, say, Golden State.
And by the way, that would be, I know you wouldn't care.
But to have Golden State and the Lakers playing on Thursday night with a playoff spot on the line and the loser goes home, it would be, you know,
would be interesting.
I care about that one.
That would get my attention.
But if they lost the two games tonight and then the one they wanted to win on Thursday
night, it would be ultimately two less games than they would play against Denver.
Because Denver, I mean, the West is much more open than it's been.
I mean, there are a lot of teams that have capabilities of going.
I think actually there's so much pressure on a couple of teams.
Tommy heading into the postseason.
Like Kevin Durant, he's got some pressure on him, man.
He went to Phoenix, and they built this super team with Devin Booker and then bringing in
Bradley Beale.
And they're in sixth place in the West.
He left Brooklyn to try to go win a title with Phoenix.
They could be out in the first round.
They play Minnesota.
I think there's a lot of pressure on KD to do well.
I think there's a ton of pressure on Doc Rivers in Milwaukee to get something done.
I mean, that team has a losing record since he took over.
I know you're not into it.
There's a ton of pressure on the Clippers on Paul George and Kauai Leonard to finally do something in the postseason and be healthy in the postseason.
And they're playing Dallas, who's the hottest team in the league heading into it.
So I'm going to be watching tonight, but I'm going to be watching the Capitals too.
I'd like to see Ovechkin against the Rangers in a Best of Seven first round series.
That would be fun.
That would be fun.
All right.
Do you have anything else to add to the program?
Well, after I get done talking to you here, I have to go get a blood test done.
Well, let me mention that Tommy's blood test is brought to you by MyBooky.
Go to my bookie.ag.
Use my promo code, Kevin D.C.
And you can start betting the NBA playoffs tonight with a cash bonus on your initial deposit.
That's MyBooky.orgie.org promo code, Kevin D.C.
They've got everything you need for the NBA playoffs and the NHL playoffs, which will get underway, I think, this weekend as well.
Why are you going for a blood test?
Well, it's just a standard checkup.
you know, just stand, nothing, nothing in particular, just standard checkup.
Don't you get blood work at least once a year?
Yeah, but why are you bringing it up?
You brought it up in sort of a way in which I thought you were going to give me.
Well, because I haven't been able to eat yet today.
Oh.
You know?
Yeah, yeah, you got a fast.
Yeah, right.
And also, I don't, my blood, my veins roll.
you know, so I'm a difficult stick because they roll around.
So it's not a fun process.
Oh, my God.
Your veins roll?
Yes, they do.
We've got to end this show.
I want to talk about quarterbacks now.
Good luck with your blood test.
It's just a normal physical where you're getting your blood work, right?
That's it.
Okay.
You'll be fine.
You'll be fine.
The stick, because your veins are rolling, you know,
know, hopefully they hit the vein. But if they're moving, it's going to have to be somebody
with some really good, very good arm accuracy in the stick today. That's going to be important.
Absolutely. You worry about me, don't you? I do worry about you, but, you know, somehow you just
keep rolling along. Somehow you're always there when you need me. All right, back tomorrow,
everybody. Enjoy the day. See you, Tommy. See you, boss.
