Starting point is 00:00:02 You don't want it. You don't need it. But you're going to get it anyway. The Kevin Sheehan Show. Here's Kevin. Tommy's here. I am here. The show's presenting sponsor, as always, Window Nation.
Starting point is 00:00:16 86690 Nation and WindowNation. Dot com. If you do Windows, Tommy, I've got two emails to open up the show. They're about the same topic. This from TES, Tess writes, Kevin, I love your coverage. of the commanders, but a suggestion, why don't you do more practice breakdowns?
Starting point is 00:00:38 Would really love to hear your opinion on some of the players who are looking good in the red zone drills. Now, when I read this, I was waiting for the laughing emoji or the LOL or something that followed, but nothing followed that. Then I got this from E.
Starting point is 00:00:57 He writes, Kevin, you downplay training camp, and yet here you are, every day doing most of your show on it. Four hours of radio and then you do another two hours of a podcast. First of all, E, the radio show is three hours. And the podcast never reaches two hours. It's usually between an hour 10 and an hour 25, somewhere in that range.
Starting point is 00:01:21 He writes 90% of it's on training camp. And then you'll do, and then he writes, and then you'll do a special pregame and post game show for the preseason. in games. You're a treat, Kev. Love you. Ian College Park. First of all, you have to recognize the difference in content with what Kevin is doing as opposed to the lunacy that comes out of practice. Well, it's not. We can make fun of the, like the actual validity of what the play-by-play and training camp, well, it is and what it actually means.
Starting point is 00:02:06 But I don't want to refer to it as lunacy because some of the people that are doing it are people we both know and they get a lot of views and a lot of feedback. Well, that doesn't mean that it's not crazy. If there's everybody's participating, that doesn't make it less crazy. Well, but they're participating because there are people that are interested in it. lunacy, I think, is just a little tough, that's all. You know, we're not going to tackle this topic if you're going to put the brakes on me. I don't want to put the brakes on you.
Starting point is 00:02:40 I'm just responding to you. Let me just tell you something. I don't put breaks on you. I have zero ability to put breaks on you. So you do what you want. Let me just tell Tess real quickly, because it really sounded like he, wants me to be a participant in this, even though I have provided, Tommy, I provided my annual PSA yesterday and read through a lot of the tweets from last year's training camp
Starting point is 00:03:11 play by play. They're actually hysterical to go back and find. But no, Tess, I would not do that. I would never do that. First of all, they practice, then this has been the practice schedule under this regime. They practice in the mornings during my radio show. So I wouldn't be able to do that. And the radio show doesn't send us out there to do our shows. Not 980 anyway. But, yeah, I found some dozes from last year. Do you want to hear some of them?
Starting point is 00:03:43 Sure. So here were a few of them. The best ones are about the defense. The commander's cornerback room is going to be a major area of strength this season. The defense looks great. More blanket coverage by Sanristil. He also had an I&T off a deflection. The defense is different.
Starting point is 00:04:08 More speed and cohesion in the back end. It looks built for turnovers. They had 10 takeaways last year. Second worst in the league. Where's the one about Joe Witt, Jr.? The defense is night and day from last year. Joe Witt Jr. appears to have settled in, looking for big improvement from the defensive coordinator in his second year.
Starting point is 00:04:33 Latimore is a baller. The cornerbacks are the best group on the roster after QBs. I mean, I found some good ones too. I found like some Laramie Tunsell stuff. It was pretty obvious to those doing play-by-play that Laramie Tunsell was one big dude and looked different than the rest. Here's one. Tunsell is a beast. He's different than the rest of the offensive line.
Starting point is 00:05:00 The investment in protecting Jaden is paying off. Well, it hadn't paid off at that point, but at least somebody recognized Tunsel was a beast early on. Yeah, that was my annual public service announcement of, if you're into this, bless your heart, but just understand that much of it, if not the majority of it, will be wrong. Yeah, you're basically, as Alan Iverson would say, you're making judgments on how you think the season is going to play out based on your zero knowledge pretty much of what they're trying to do and the limited time you get to see it in practice. We're talking about practice, right?
Starting point is 00:05:50 Yes. Practice. Yes. But this is the social media outweigh. I understand why people need to do it because it feeds the beast. But the people eating it on the other end, I guess I'm asking people, when you're eating junk food, recognize it's junk food. It's good, though.
Starting point is 00:06:17 It can be really good. But it is junk food. Yes. Let me just tell you, if I were not in this business, but I know I would still be a huge fan of football and a huge fan of this team, I wouldn't literally not pay attention to any of this. I wouldn't even know it existed. Now, I don't pay attention to it now other than to just smile and giggle about it. But, let me go a step further. I know I've said this before. There is no way on God's Green Earth that if I weren't in this business, you could get me to watch an NFL preseason game.
Starting point is 00:07:05 Other than to just see football once again on TV for about 10 minutes, and then I would go to something else. There is literally no worse sports product on television than NFL preseason football. And there's a little to nothing to gain from it. Nothing. It's the biggest fraud in sports.
Starting point is 00:07:29 It's more of a fraud than professional wrestling. Okay. Yeah. That's how bad it is. Now, somebody will likely reach out and say, didn't you say that this preseason, because of the two new coordinators, that you want to see the starters play more?
Starting point is 00:07:47 I did say that. I said that I think if I were, you know, in the decision-making department, I would consider because Durante Jones has never been on the headset calling defensive plays, and David Blow has never been on the headset calling plays, I would take these, you know, at least two of the preseason games, and let them face somewhat a live situation, you know, in a real stadium with fans, with a clock, with a play clock, with referees, with an opponent, with downs and yard markers and players coming in and coming out, rather than have them do that for the first time against
Starting point is 00:08:30 the Eagles on September 13th. Now, they're going to do it the entire game, obviously, because that's their position. So they're going to get the benefit of doing it for the entire game. But I'm talking about doing it with the players who are going to play when the season starts, the starters. I might consider a different approach and maybe a quarter or, you know, two or three series at least, so that they're kind of all in it together because it is a new group. But that's just me.
Starting point is 00:09:06 Anyway, some news. It's just, yeah. It's so, I mean, preseason football, I mean, they want to eventually eliminate it, you know, and, you know, pretty much eliminated. But you know the one thing about preseason football? And this used to be the case. It's not so much anymore because tickets are easier to come by. But in the old days, when regular season tickets were hard to come by,
Starting point is 00:09:36 yes, I know what you're going to say. Free season football was the only chance for a lot of people to go see the team. When the Redskins were selling out year and year out, and tickets were impossible to get when the games began. I knew a lot of people, a lot of my friends whose parents didn't have season tickets, they would go to preseason games, and they would be so fired up to go to preseason games.
Starting point is 00:10:02 And by the way, back then, the starters played more, and there were more of them. And there were more games. Yeah. Yeah. But now, I mean, a regular season game for this team in particular, you know, some games you can buy for pocket change online. Yes.
Starting point is 00:10:25 The day of the game. Right. So it doesn't serve that purpose so much anymore either. No, I mean, you know, our team isn't the only team in professional sports that's not like that doesn't have a sold-out season ticket base. No, actually, it's an industry problem. It's an industry problem. Yep.
Starting point is 00:10:51 Absolutely. Correct. Yeah. No, for a number of reasons, one, the most obvious is it's a lot easier for people to sit home on their big screen TV and not pay for parking and watch it at home. Well. That's something that the NFL is always going to be struggling with. Always. And you can always get a ticket if you really need a ticket.
Starting point is 00:11:15 can always get a pair to go to the game with a friend or a significant other if you really need one. I mean, the World Cup final was tough, I was told. It was pretty expensive, but absent of those major events, a regular season, big game, or even a playoff game, there are always tickets available. Always tickets available. Speaking of tickets, it's just a quick, totally unrelated story. Um, my, I had tickets to muse the rock band muse at Maryweather. I've seen them a few times on Tuesday night. I don't even know who they are. I know.
Starting point is 00:11:55 You don't follow, uh, music much if it, if it's come out post-1963. Um, no, that's not true. But, uh, the storms that came through the other night, that, yeah, I mean, so I, I got home a little bit later and we were going to leave at like seven. you know, they were probably going to come on at like 830, 845 somewhere around there. And the storms that came through were nasty the other night. Power went out and... Oh, yeah.
Starting point is 00:12:26 Very windy. She just, she was on a call. And I'm like, if we don't leave now and she's like, we're not leaving with the power off and with the dog here. And we just bailed. So for the first time in my life, I went to try to resell. the tickets that I had. I did not go through the ticket person that has Bernie, Bernie Barry with Wolftrap has been a help to many of us over the years getting tickets. But he had just gotten us tickets recently to a show at Wolftrap. So I didn't want to ask him like twice in a month.
Starting point is 00:13:05 So I actually got these tickets on my own. And I went to resell them. But once you're within, I guess an hour of the show, you can't resell them. That really pissed me off. Because I saw on StubHub, it said something like 1,100 people right now trying to buy tickets. Like it's hot right now with people trying. I'm like, okay, I got two of them right now. Wouldn't let me do it because it was within an hour of the start of the show. So I had to eat that.
Starting point is 00:13:43 It wasn't super. expensive. So Muse is a trio known for space rock, progressive rock, electronic music, and alternative rock. Muse is a rock band.
Starting point is 00:13:59 Muse is, you know, it doesn't say anything about rock and roll here. It just says space rock. It's a rock band. Is that like Jetson? Space rock? It's not. There's definitely some electronic rock in some of their albums. But no, I would say they're a rock band or an alt rock band.
Starting point is 00:14:19 One of the two would be the way, yeah, that's how I would describe them. Okay. Yeah. Okay. And there's only three at them, right? Yes. Yeah. I mean, how good could they be?
Starting point is 00:14:29 Matt Bellamy is the lead singer and lead guitarist. And I think he is married to Kate Hudson, who's been married multiple times to rock stars. because she was married to Black Crow's Robinson, Chris Robinson, and I think she's married to Matt Bellamy or was married to Matt Bellamy. By the way, I like Kate Hudson. Do you?
Starting point is 00:15:00 I think she's really good in a lot of things. I did not see that. I heard she's great in it. Yes, she is. I'd recommend it. Yeah. Yeah, I've had that recommended to me. It's a fun movie to watch.
Starting point is 00:15:13 Interesting movie. Do you like her? I mean, she's Goldie Hawn's daughter, right? Yeah, I know. Yeah. I know. I'm a Neil Diamond fan, so I really enjoyed it. My father's a big Neil Diamond fan.
Starting point is 00:15:25 He's the one that told me to go see it, but he said the movie's not really, it's not like it's a biopic on Neil Diamond. No, not at all. Yeah. Not at all. There's a lot of Neil Diamond music in it. Right. But no, it's a totally different story.
Starting point is 00:15:38 And she was good in it? I tell you what. I enjoy that a lot more than The Odyssey. Okay. Yeah, no, you've told me about The Odyssey. So, oh, okay, so she was married to Matt Bellamy from 2010 to 2014. So they've been divorced for quite some time. She was married to Chris Robinson 2000 to 2007. How old do you think Kate Hudson is?
Starting point is 00:16:02 40. 47. Okay. I was actually going to guess 50. She's been around now for a while. Yeah. She's done a lot of movies. She originally, I mean, the last name, Hudson, was from one of the Hudson brothers,
Starting point is 00:16:22 the musical group back in one of the 70s or 80s or something like that. Well, who was her father? Kurt Russell wasn't the father, right? No, one of it, yeah. No, actually, I think, I think I have that wrong. One of the Hudson brothers is her father. Well, it would be. Her name is Kate Hudson. Yes. But Goldie Hawn was married to Kurt Russell for a long time, right?
Starting point is 00:16:50 I don't know if they've ever been married. Oh, really? They've been together a long time. But I don't know if they've ever been married. The father is Bill Hudson, vocalist in the Hudson brothers, a band he formed in 1965 with his two younger brothers, Brett and Mark.
Starting point is 00:17:10 He had a recurring guest role on the same. series Dugie Houser MD. And he was married to Goldie Hawn from 76 to 82, and then was married to Cindy Williams. I'm going to guess this is the Cindy Williams from Laverne and Shirley. Yes, it is. It's the only one I know. Yeah, only one I know. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:17:34 But I don't think Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn are married. You might want to check. Put your staff on that. My staff is on it, and Goldie Hawn, who, by the way, grew up in our area. She went to Blair High School in Montgomery County. You're right. It just says Kurt Russell has been her partner,
Starting point is 00:18:00 1983 to present. She did that movie over, was it called Overboard? I've seen it. Overboard. A million times. Yeah. Fun movie.
Starting point is 00:18:09 And that's the two of them, that's got to be like right around 1983, I'm going to guess. I'm guessing. 1987. 1987 they did the movie together, so they were dating before. She got it done for a long time, right? I don't know.
Starting point is 00:18:28 I was never a big fan. Oh, I mean, she's got it packed in one right place. Let's just say that. Yes, yes. I think... And I've always been a Kurt Russell fan. I mean, almost anything he's ever done. I think Kate Hudson is much better looking than her mother.
Starting point is 00:18:51 I think she is. You see, I remember watching Goldie Hawn on Laugh-In. Well, I don't remember that. I mean, I know that. Laughan. Tell me, was that Rowan and Martin? Yes. Okay.
Starting point is 00:19:05 Rowan and Martin's laugh. That's a good pull by me, right? Kurt Russell used to be a minor league baseball player. Really? Yeah. Didn't know that. Yeah. he's 75 and she's 80.
Starting point is 00:19:22 Wow. She's 80 years old. Okay. What else? Oh, I want to talk about Stefan Diggs and the, you know, the desire that I have for him to come and play for this football team. and I care about your answer to, so we'll get that. And we got a lot to get to.
Starting point is 00:19:50 Tommy's got a bunch of stuff, including bumstock coming up. So we'll hear about that for about the 17th consecutive year. Although, for whatever reason, I have a memory that it was discontinued there for a little while, but maybe not. We'll get to all of it more after these words from a few of our sponsors. Starting point is 00:22:01 This segment of the show is brought to you by My Booky. If you want to bet on the NFL, even this time of year, my bookie's a good place to do it. They've got all of the week one lines up. Currently, Philly is a four-point favorite over Washington in the week one matchup at the link. And there are so many prop bets and future bets opportunities. I've given you some of them during the last few shows. How about this one at My Bookie?
Starting point is 00:22:30 Over under on Jaden Daniels passing yards for the season. The number is 3,200 and a half. Now, as a rookie when he played all 17 games, he threw for 3,568 yards. Last year, playing in just seven games and only in four games start to finish, he threw for 1262 yards. Not really a good measuring stick. But the number is 3,200 and a half over under on Jaden Daniels passing yards. Those are the things that are available.
Starting point is 00:23:10 MyBooky's got so much available for all of you to choose from if you're interested in futures and prop bets. Antonio Williams right now is plus 2,500. He's the seventh odds on favorite to become the rookie with the most receiving yards. It's actually fun just to go through some of these things at mybooky.com or mybooky.ag. If you choose to bet on the NFL through MyBooky, use my promo code, Kevin D.C. You'll get a cash bonus when you do that. MyBooky.com, mybooky.orgie.orgia promo code Kevin, D.C. So Nikki Javala from The Athletic earlier this morning put out a tweet of a Stefan Diggs meme or Jif of him in a Buffalo Bill
Starting point is 00:24:05 uniform on a sideline pointing to himself screaming, I'm him. That's what the kids say these days. And Nikki wrote, my assessment of the first two days of commanders camp. So there are, you know, there are multiple ways to sort of take that. Number one, that's Nikki just saying they need another receiver badly based on my assessment of the first two days of camp. Or maybe she's hearing some things about Stefan Diggs. John Kime was on with the junkies this morning,
Starting point is 00:24:47 and everybody now understands. And by the way, this is, you know, I know some of you still actually believe that Brandon Ayuk has got some, you know, incredible strategic plan for getting to Washington. I said it the other day, Tommy, me zero percent chance. He plays in Washington this year, zero percent chance. And it's very likely now, becoming more likely that he may not play anywhere in the NFL in 2026. One of the all-time self-sabotages
Starting point is 00:25:18 in sports that we've seen. But he's got talent, and I would bet he's on a roster in 2027. Just hopefully he's well. We're rooting for that. But anyway, Kime was on with the junkies and said, you know, no to, you know, Brandon Ayuk is not even part of the conversation. So if they signed somebody who will it be, and he immediately just said, well, it's Stefan Diggs. He's the right fit. Let me just say, I've not heard anything about Stefan Diggs to Washington. I mean, we've talked about it for months as a possibility, but there's a little bit, maybe
Starting point is 00:25:53 some smoke out there on Diggs right now. And you know he wants to play for Washington. Now, I think there's a chance that he just wants, opportunity to play football somewhere where he can win. Washington may not be his first choice, but he certainly has said the right things about Washington when asked during this offseason. So the question is, do you want him to be signed by Washington? My answer is unequivocally yes. We actually put out a Twitter poll. and 83% so far say yes on Stefan Diggs.
Starting point is 00:26:38 Stefan Diggs is not the receiver he once was, but he's still really good. 85 catches last year, over 1,000 yards, led the way for a team that went to the Super Bowl. He was their leading receiver. Two years ago, when he got hurt in Houston, he was well on his way to a season of 100-plus catches, and 1,100 plus yards.
Starting point is 00:27:05 He's not the deep take the top off threat that he used to be, but he is still a tough over the middle, you know, possession receiver, and is still enough of a deep threat where you got to respect that. He's very experienced, he's played recently and played well, and he is one badass tough guy on game days. There is no doubt about his, competitive nature on game day. He might wear out his welcome after a year.
Starting point is 00:27:40 He may require a lot of patience at times, but I'd say for this team, yes, on Stefan Diggs. What about you? Well, let me read to you a column that I filed for tomorrow in the Washington Times. First couple of graphs. Washington, you may not agree. He said you probably don't.
Starting point is 00:28:04 Washington commander's general manager, Adam Peters, said a lot of things Tuesday in his training camp kickoff press conference. One of the things he said was there's a, quote, ton of energy in the building. That's good because there's not much outside the building. Oh, there's the built-in buzz about this team. The core Washington football fan base
Starting point is 00:28:26 still left from the Dan Snyder destruction and the abandonment of the name of the team. And there are always the core NFL fans starving for any football as summer winds down. Those are substantial but diminished. After all, there seemed to be more energy when the commanders opened training camp on Tuesday for the invisible baseball team battling for a wild card spot as a trading deadline neared. Outside of town, the national outlook for the commander's season has been muted at best, national pundits have low expectations
Starting point is 00:29:04 and bookmakers have put the team's wins over under at seven and a half and I go into the contrast from this time last year when there was so much energy about this team so what are you leading to? Everywhere. What are you leading to? Well, Stefan Diggs is a power burst.
Starting point is 00:29:25 Yes. He is a burst of power. He is energy. I agree. You know, I'm not saying that's the reason you should sign. No, it's not, it wouldn't be the reason to do it. But he'd be the most anticipated. He'd be, his debut would be the most anticipated of any of the new players on the team,
Starting point is 00:29:49 including probably Sunny Stiles. Yes, it would be. He is a burst of power. And I think, I think they could use a little birth. they spent all this money on players. And, you know, again, I don't think there's been that much buzz about the team going into the season, other than, you know, the built-in buzz. I think Stefan Diggs raises that level of energy.
Starting point is 00:30:17 I don't think there's any doubt about it. I think if they signed Stefan Diggs, that would be, I mean, I'm not going to say that, you know, ESPN's going to be live at training camp for a week to cover it. but it would be certainly a big burst not only locally but nationally for at least a few minutes and there would be I think there would be a general feeling that Washington's supporting cast offensively for Jaden Daniels improved by a lot and I think our fan base would be pumped up yeah and I agree so yeah not which is what one of the reasons why I think that, yes, they should sign them.
Starting point is 00:31:03 Yeah, I would love to see it. Now, you know, there are always reasons why things don't happen. Right now, someone asked me, why hasn't he signed? Is that a red flag? I don't know who was. It was on my Twitter timeline before we started to record. But anyway, my guess is that Stefan Diggs has not signed with anybody at this point because of money, that he's asking for two much money and teams aren't willing to pay his price right now. And so for a veteran player like Stefan Diggs, you know, there is a point in which I'm sure he wants to get into camp. He certainly isn't upset that he missed all of the offseason activities.
Starting point is 00:31:46 And he's probably not going to be that upset to miss part of training camp. But I would say that in the order of most likely answers as to why he hasn't signed somewhere, that's likelihood number one. You know, the spot track numbers have him as a two-year contract at about $27.5 million, you know, somewhere around there. So one year, 13.75, 13.8, whatever. Call it 14 a year, you know, for two years. And always the number that's most important in those things is the guaranteed dollars.
Starting point is 00:32:24 And he probably sees himself at where he was last year. which was a one year $22.5 million deal in New England, where he went out and performed, led them in pass receiving yards and receptions, and they were a team that went to the Super Bowl. You may ask, well, why is any back there? Well, they did trade for A.J. Brown. And they did sign Romeo Dobbs in free agency. And there's a new coaching staff there. No, no, that was last year. Oh, that's right, New England.
Starting point is 00:32:57 Yeah. I'm getting his stops mixed up. I was thinking of Buffalo. Yeah. So, you know, it's also very possible that the interest in the player for a number of reasons may not be as high as fans think it should be. There's always a lot of stuff they know that we don't know. But I would bet it's a money thing right now. And so Adam Peters, we already know.
Starting point is 00:33:27 that this team's analytics department when it comes to the evaluation of receivers once they turn 30 years old doesn't really believe that receivers 30 and older should be paid. You know, he's overpaid perception-wise anyway for players like Ken Law and then O-Way this year. I think the O-A contract was pretty much market value, actually. But we saw what he did a year ago with Terry. and the idea that, you know, they weren't going to give Terry anywhere near what he wanted. And Diggs is a year and a half older than Terry. So the money would be the holdup if they're interested.
Starting point is 00:34:13 But for a one-year deal or, you know, whatever, money shouldn't be an object. And they have the money. Yeah. I think, you know, Jeremy Fowler was on with me last week. We ran it, I think, on Saturday or Sunday over the weekend. And he talked about some of the receivers that could be available at the end of training camp, you know, before cuts. By the way, the NFL started this last year.
Starting point is 00:34:41 There's only one cutdown date. There aren't multiple cutdown dates like there used to be. They go from 90 to 53 on September, whatever, you know, a week before, nine days before the regular season. begins. So at that point, he suggested guys like Tillman in Cleveland or DeMario Douglas in New England could become available. And that might be a, you know, that could, that could be where their next receiver comes from. But give me digs. Give me digs for one year. Put him out there with Terry. He's, he may not be the, you know, the vertical threat that he once was. But, But he is one tough SOB on game day.
Starting point is 00:35:28 And I'd love that. It's another veteran to throw out there. I talked yesterday, Tommy, about what Dan Quinn said when he was asked about Jacori Kroski-Marry. He basically pivoted almost immediately to Rashad White. You know, Rashad White's a veteran. Rashad White's somebody early in the season at Philly, at Dallas, Seattle in town, that I think they're going to be able to count on more than Bill.
Starting point is 00:35:53 I think Rashad White's going to get the snap count, you know, percentages more so than the other backs, at least early in the season. And Diggs has been there, done that. You know, imagine him with Terry and Jaden, Laramie Tunsell, that offense, you know, that's a team ready to take on Philadelphia, and that defense in week one, and that defense looks nasty. As much as I'm down on Philly this year, I recognize how great they are on defense. Yeah. Yeah. So the answer is yes, times two on Stefan Diggs. The news from camp today on Nick Allegretti, we talked about this on the show yesterday,
Starting point is 00:36:42 that the news came out after Quinn had spoken, that he had left the first practice pretty quickly. Quinn said today he's dealing with a calf strain and then wide receiver Traylon Brooks is dealing with foot soreness but he doesn't expect either to be long-term issues. Did you watch, I mean your column came from the AP Dan Quinn press conference. Did you watch that whole thing or did you just read the transcript? I just read the transcript.
Starting point is 00:37:15 Okay. Because the most confidence in a player was their answer about Nick Allegretti. And it was the last question of the press conference. And on the first day, he got banged up. So we'll see what happens. But it sounds like they're not too concerned about it. All right.
Starting point is 00:37:37 We've got other things to get to, and we'll start doing that after these words from a few of our sponsors. Hey, guys, I want to welcome a new sponsor to the podcast. Well, Shelling's backroom at 1331 F3, Northwest in the district. I always describe it sometimes as a gift. the fact that that place even exists is a gift. I certainly treated as a gift. I never take it for granted. And actually, not long ago, somebody, a friend of mine, actually gave me a gift card at Shelley's
Starting point is 00:40:10 to use. Shelley's Backroom has gift cards available that you can buy for people. You go on their website, shelley's backroom.com. gift cards in the amount of $25, $200, $200, or you can customize your amount from $5 to $500. It's a great gift for somebody for their birthday, you know, and maybe celebrating some kind of an event, you know, a job promotion. What better gift than a job for a job promotion than to send them a gift card to Shelly's back room so they can celebrate with a quality, Stoge. You can find out more at shelley's backroom.com. All right. The Nationals dropped a tough one yesterday, so that was their first series
Starting point is 00:41:01 loss since the All-Star break. They had a chance in the bottom of the eighth. I was watching it. Bases loaded, Lyle struck out, Jacob Young then popped out to end the inning. And they start this four-game series tonight with Atlanta. first place team in the division, and they're a game above 500. They're two out in the wild card spot. They're actually two out now of both the second and the third wild card spot because the Phillies have gotten pounded recently. They got swept by the Marlins who had lost like 12 or 13 in a row. By the way, real quickly, can I just mention one thing? You're not going to care about this, but I'm not going to mention the golf club.
Starting point is 00:41:50 But someone sent me the T-sheet of a golf club in the state of Maryland from this morning. The Phillies, by the way, are playing the Orioles. They're opening up a series against the Orioles tomorrow night. And on the T-sheet this morning, Bryce Harper was in a group with, hold on. I have it right here in front of me. Bear with me. Harper was in a group with Trey Turner, and then another. Philly J.T. Real Muto.
Starting point is 00:42:22 And then, in the group behind them, LeBron James, Rich Paul, Josh Hart were in the foursome. Wow. Yeah. So, now this is a very nice, very
Starting point is 00:42:38 nice and prestigious golf club in the state of Maryland. And the Phillies, that makes sense because they had the day off and they're opening up a set against Baltimore tomorrow night. And look, Baltimore's not that far from Philly,
Starting point is 00:42:54 and maybe LeBron was in Philly. So he decided to play. Apparently, LeBron is addicted to golf. Now, the protocol on a golf course is you can't approach a celebrity while they're playing or something like that, right? No, you wouldn't want to do that. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:43:11 I mean, you, I mean, Cooley, I think I've told the story, or he told this story, We were playing together one day, and his tea shot landed on the tee box of a hole next to the hole we were playing on. And as he was walking up to that tee box, I recognized one of the players getting ready to tee off as former president, Barack Obama. And so Cooley's walking up to that T box to get his ball and to probably, you know, wave and say, hey, sorry about that. And we yelled four. You know, you have to yell four of a ball's heading in the direction of somebody. And I noticed it.
Starting point is 00:43:56 And I said, Chris. And he goes, what? And I go, that's President Obama on the T-box. And he turns around loud enough for everybody to hear and goes, shut the F up loudly. And then he walks a couple more steps. And he turns around. And he goes, oh, my God, you're right. And I said, just remember when you get up there, even though he's not.
Starting point is 00:44:20 not the president anymore. It's still Mr. President. He turns around and goes, you don't effing think I know that. Stop treating me like a child. And he walked up there and I saw, you know, he was, my ball was on the opposite side of where his was. And he went up there and he shook hands with the president and the people that they were playing with and had a short conversation. So he said that the president didn't necessarily know who he was, but the others knew who he was. And they told the president, this is Chris Cooley, he played for the Redskins, and they shook hands. And, you know, Chris went on and hit his shot. And they, uh, they were waiting anyway, I guess for people in a in a fair way, although typically when the president plays. And I've been on courses where the president,
Starting point is 00:45:10 uh, where Obama's played. He loves golf. Usually they clear a hole in front and a hole behind. And And then I think when he was president, they clear four holes in front and four holes behind, which by the way is inconvenient for the golfers on the course when you have that much space in between one group. But that's what he was entitled to. You know, I think I have this right. And I don't think I'm speaking out of school here. I might be, though, but I'll throw it out anyway.
Starting point is 00:45:45 You know, Tony has played more golf. with Obama than I think any other civilian since he became president and then post his presidency. He's played with him dozens and dozens of times. He's a big fan of Tony and Mike's, you know, and Mike's played, I think Wilbon's played with him a lot too. It's just that I think Tony just plays more golf in general. I don't think that was Tails out of school because I think he's
Starting point is 00:46:16 talked about it on his podcast. podcast. Anyway, what were we talking about? The Nats. I don't know. You got me all starstruck. How did we get to the Nats? Yeah. Well, somebody sent out the T-sheet at this particular place. That's right. And who was on it this morning? And I'm like, wow. All right. So... Do you think any of those guys paid to be there in play? No, absolutely not.
Starting point is 00:46:47 No, not one of them. No. Now, let me just tell you, some of these places, it doesn't matter who you are, they've got to have the availability. You know, the members of those places still have priority. But I would imagine that Thursday, early morning, there were plenty of spots to fit those guys in. And, you know, look, if you're LeBron James, I'm pretty sure, you know, Other than like the real elite elites of golf places in America, Augusta, Pine Valley, Cyprus, some of those places. I'm sure he can play some of those places, but he's got to get invited.
Starting point is 00:47:32 You've got to get invited. And a lot of, even if he's out there today, I would bet, and if I looked at the T-shea, there are names in the group that I don't recognize. Usually they'll have to have at least a member or the pro or the assistant pro, will join the group to play. Yeah, LeBron, Josh Hart, Rich Paul, his agent, and then there's a name here that I don't recognize, and that's probably, you know, one of the assistant pros of the pro or somebody like that.
Starting point is 00:48:02 What's the biggest name you ever played with? Played golf with? Oh, I've not played with any big-name golfers. Well, besides Cooley. I mean, you know, people, yeah, Cooley and Tony and Scott. I mean, those kinds of people, but they're my friends. Okay.
Starting point is 00:48:21 Yeah. Okay. Yeah. Wilbon. Wilbon's fun to play golf with. Oh, I've got one for you. This was seven, eight years ago. We were out in Scottsdale.
Starting point is 00:48:36 My father, my boys, two of my three boys, actually. One couldn't come. So we turned it into, you know, kind of a long weekend, like a four-day Arizona trip where golf was scheduled each of the four days. And there was a place that Steve Sands had recommended that we tried to play at. And it was a place that was private. It was called Whisper Rock. It was a spectacular place.
Starting point is 00:49:10 A lot of professional athletes on the West Coast are members there. and Steve set up the opportunity for two of us, so I took my father, to play with a group that included Mike Madano, all-time leading NHL American-born points leader. I think that's what it was at the time. Let me just tell you real quickly, because I'm not a hockey guy. I would not have recognized Mike Madonna
Starting point is 00:49:45 by face. My dad is more of a hockey person. And when we got introduced, I certainly knew the name Mike Medano. I could not have told you a lot about his career. My father knew a lot about his career. My father, you know, was thrilled to be playing with him.
Starting point is 00:50:03 And by the way, the guy absolutely crushed the golf ball and was really good. And it was fun, too. We had a great time with them. You know, sometimes you do those things. And I don't like to do them, especially if,
Starting point is 00:50:15 I feel like I'm putting somebody out. And the guy that actually hosted us was Colt Nost, who does CBS Golf Commentary. He was on the tour at the time he was injured. And he was a member there. And Steve called him up and said, any chance you could hook this up. And he said, sure, have him come out. There's actually two guys playing and they can be the other two. And I've got to host them.
Starting point is 00:50:38 And so we ended up having a great time. You know, I don't think we were a drag on the group. We ended up gambling a little bit and having some fun. And yeah. So I guess in terms of people that I don't know, that would probably be the person, and it's a hockey player. But still, that would be like, I think, I'm sure I'm going to come up with something else, but probably not.
Starting point is 00:51:06 I don't play golf with a lot of famous people other than people who are my friends that happen to have been my friends for a long time or that I've been. worked with. Is that enough of golf about golf for the day? Well, I've, I've one more question. Okay. On the four-hole clear-out rule, does that apply to miniature golf as well? I don't think so. I don't know what the miniature golf rules are. Do you think a president has ever put a miniature golf hall in office? Sure. Who? I don't know. Who would have? I don't know. I don't think so. Okay. Why don't you Google it and see if a president a sitting president's ever played miniature golf?
Starting point is 00:51:47 You know what? I'll work on that. Work on that. Get your staff to work on that. Yeah, I'll work on that. Okay. The conversation has derailed. But the Nats need some wins here heading into the trade deadline, don't they? Yes. Yes, they do. It's a big series in Atlanta with the Braves. And like I said, I think.
Starting point is 00:52:14 think that they'll be competitive. I think that they have too much of an offense to be stopped at this point. I think if come the trade deadline, if they're right where they are now, then I'm hoping that they don't ship out anybody. And I think Buster only has reported that the Nats are in serious talks about reaching some kind of contract extension with Foster Griffin. And you buy that? No
Starting point is 00:52:46 Yeah, I mean because I also read something the other day that said that those talks were initiated but they were brief and didn't end well Yeah, I did read that too Yeah
Starting point is 00:52:58 Yeah You know Jake Irvin's pitching tonight He's been activated He's going to pitch for the first time basically In two months And then in this series Both Griffin and Cavali are scheduled To get starts
Starting point is 00:53:12 So Listen, Jake Irvin has the potential I know. To be a stud as well. I know. He can be erratic, but he has the stuff
Starting point is 00:53:21 to be a quality starter. All right. He can do that, and they add in this kid early that they got from Boston later on, all of a sudden, they've got an impressive starting rotation.
Starting point is 00:53:38 I agree. I get, this is what, my guy, G, from the shop. He tweeted me, I'm looking for it. I can paraphrase it. But essentially it was like, it seems like whenever Kevin talks baseball, it's forced. And then he had a bunch of laughing emojis. I'm into this team right now. I watched, I watched almost, I watched almost the
Starting point is 00:54:04 entire game yesterday. I, I really want, I want them to be in the mix here. in September. And I think it would be so cool to see them in that best of three wild card round in that first weekend of the playoffs. It would be great. It would be great. And so unexpected. This would be one of the most unexpected playoff seasons for any of our, I guess Washington in 2024 was rather unexpected. That came out of nowhere. Getting to the playoffs and getting to the NFC championship game. Yeah, yeah. But nothing, the Wizards haven't done anything
Starting point is 00:54:49 unexpected in a half century. Nothing unexpected. The Caps, usually when they do something, it's expected, because they're supposed to be good. Our football teams, you know, any sort of success has been unexpected, typically going into the season. But this would really be from nowhere.
Starting point is 00:55:10 I mean, they had the second lowest over under win total in baseball going into the season? I know. Believe me, I know. I didn't expect this. I don't think Paul Tobani expected this either. No. So let's see how he handles it. You know what, Tommy? You've got to adjust based on what the reality of the situation is, not based on the plan. Plan has to change sometimes based on what's happened. I mean, that's one of the criticisms of the numbers geeks. I know.
Starting point is 00:55:46 They're not very flexible. They live by numbers and not people. Well, we talked about this, yeah, we talked about this the other day. This is an organization that has literally no juice around it, none. You can't pass up the opportunity to create some buzz. Yeah. and it has it has created some buzz and I think September would be wild
Starting point is 00:56:15 me too I mean I don't I would hope it would be I'm not so sure it will be speaking of buzz did you see Tony Romo when he got pulled over the other day we'll get to that bum stock and more after these words from a few of our sponsors you get a chance and you don't mind doing it
Starting point is 00:56:38 rate and review this podcast if you haven't done it already. To those that have, thank you so much. It's really quick and easy. Both Apple and Spotify give you a chance to give the show five stars. That's obviously the best case for us and would appreciate that rating if you think the show deserves it. Also following this podcast, just at the plus button or the follow button. That really helps us out as well. A big piece of NFL news today, Tommy. Baker Mayfield is going to play the final year of his deal without a contract extension. Both he and the Bucks could not reach an agreement on a new contract before a deadline that he actually imposed, which was the start of training camp. And he said about the contract negotiations, he said that he felt disrespected.
Starting point is 00:57:38 a little bit. That's really the disappointing part to feel undervalued after thinking you've earned it. So Baker Mayfield, who led Tampa after he kind of got that jolt for his career after getting cut by Carolina and then signed on a Monday to play on Thursday night football for Sean McVe's Rams. Liam Cohen was the offensive coordinator. They got him ready for that game. He played great, and that led to the opportunity. in Tampa and he's played really well. He was, you know, he was fun to watch in the Netflix show quarterback, but was injured a lot last year, but he's going to play this year. Tough spot to have your star quarterback feeling disrespected heading into a season.
Starting point is 00:58:28 They could always franchise tag him if he plays well next year, but I thought he would end up in that top 10 range of, you know, quarterbacks in that $50 million a year range. But apparently not. He felt dissed. Dispected. Yeah. By the way, according to my staff, there was at least one president who has played
Starting point is 00:58:56 miniature golf while he's been in office. Can I guess? Can I guess? Yeah. I'm going to say it was a Democrat, first of all. of course I'm going to guess Bill Clinton is the answer to that
Starting point is 00:59:11 ding ding winner winner thank you I swear to God I swear to God I swear on my kids I did not look that up he just seemed he loves golf
Starting point is 00:59:23 and you know it seems to me that he would have been the kind of guy to jump on a miniature golf course and get around with Hill in Ian Hillary and his daughter, their daughter, Chelsea, would play when they were on summer vacations. Okay. Where were their summer vacations?
Starting point is 00:59:44 I don't know. Martha's Vineyard probably. Somewhere, maybe the Cape. I forget where they summered. The bushes were always at Kenny Bunkport. Huh? Down the ocean, hon. Down by the ocean, hon.
Starting point is 01:00:00 We're playing some miniature golf and O.C. Up there on 110th Street. Okay. So I wanted to talk about a story that kind of broke last night and has kind of gone viral to a certain degree. It involves two WNBA players, neither of whom is Caitlin Clark or Sophie Cunningham. The two players are Paige Becker's and Angel Reese.
Starting point is 01:00:29 Page Becker is Tommy, and for those who don't know, is a rookie in the WNBA. She's an excellent player. I think she was the number one pick in the last draft. She played for Yukon for Gino Oriama. Angel Reese is, you know, the player that went head-to-head with Caitlin Clark in college when she was at LSU and Caitlin Clark was at Iowa. They've gone, you know, at it in the pros as well.
Starting point is 01:00:54 Angel Reese is the older sister of Maryland's Julian Reese, Ju-Juju Reese, who now is a Washington Wizard. The two of them were all-starred. over the weekend at the WNBA All-Star game. And there was video of the two creating a bet with one another for the next time their two teams faced each other, which was last night. Page Becker's Place for Dallas, Angel Reese plays for Atlanta, and the video had them betting $400 on the winning team, the next.
Starting point is 01:01:34 next time they faced each other, which was last night. So Reese got paid 400 if her team won by Pagebeckers. Pagebeckers got paid $400 by Angel Reese if her team won. By the way, Angel Reese's team won the game, so she won the bet. Now, how did we find out about said bet? Well, because the WNBA got the video of the two of them creating this bet during All-Star weekend and tweeted it out on the WNBA Twitter account, on their X account.
Starting point is 01:02:16 You can't make this up. This league is truly one of the dumbest leagues in the history of sports leagues. Obviously, even if it was a joke, which apparently was not a joke bet, even if it was two players joking around about gambling on a game, you would never, ever tweet that out from the league's account. Well, they did. And today, the WNBA acknowledged that the post on social media, quote, missed the mark, closed quote.
Starting point is 01:02:56 Here's the entire statement, quote, while the social media post was intended to be lighthearted, WNBA players are well aware of the league's policies, prohibiting betting on WNBA games, and receiving training every year. They receive training every year, reinforcing those policies. We recognize that the post missed the mark, removed it shortly after it was published,
Starting point is 01:03:21 and addressed the matter internally. We will also use this as an opportunity to reemphasize with the players involved, that conversations about wagering on WNBA games, even when intended as a joke, can have negative consequences. Now, according to the WNBA's rules, any player found by the commissioner after a hearing
Starting point is 01:03:44 to have been guilty of wagering directly or indirectly or of offering or attempting to wager money or anything of value on the outcome score or any other aspect of a WNBA competition shall in the sole discretion of the commissioner, subject to a fine suspension and or dismissal and disqualification from any further association with the WNBA. Yeah, I mean, by the way, Angel Reese tweeted out after her team won last night.
Starting point is 01:04:21 I'll be requesting Apple, I'm sorry, she didn't tweet this out. This was part of the post-game press conference. asked about the bet, and she said, yeah, I'll be requesting my Apple pay after this. And then she appeared to reference the bet by posting a hashtag on social media with four centos or $400 in Spanish. So what do you think? Well, it's just stunning that it didn't occur to anyone, at the very least, that the NBA has a gambling scandal going on right now.
Starting point is 01:04:57 I mean, they've got players and former players and coaches who are under indictment for betting and throwing games. I mean, how could you not be aware of that? How could this progress that far? It's out there viral. It's really incredible. It's really amazing to me. What's amazing isn't that this happened. or that the players were, you know, ignorant enough to put it out on social media.
Starting point is 01:05:37 The WNBA put it out on their social media. Yeah. Hey, look what our players do. They wager on games against each other. They're a clueless league. They don't know how to deal with the media, you know. They, they're just, they're an, it's an amateur outfit. an amateur outfit.
Starting point is 01:06:01 By the way, I don't know that we've mentioned it, but the WNBA's not going to punish either of the two players. I'm not sure that getting off completely would have happened in any other league. But yes, amateur hour. I still don't get why Adam Silver and a lot of the NBA owners who have ownership stakes, if not own outright, these WNBA teams, why the adults haven't entered the meeting room to say, yeah, Kathy, whatever her name is, the commissioner, you're gone.
Starting point is 01:06:39 We're putting in somebody who is an adult that understands that we're trying to run a business. We're running a business here. And the business starts with Caitlin Clark. She is the golden goose. We don't injure her anymore. we don't ostracize her anymore. We don't do anything negative. We prop her up at every chance we get.
Starting point is 01:07:03 Because every time she's in the limelight, we sell more tickets, we sell more merchandise, we generate more revenue, we've got a chance to make money. This league, man, incredible to me. 27 years losing money, hand over fist. The NBA there every single year to subsidize the losses. to fund the league, to keep it afloat for whatever reason. And a meal ticket shows up, a cash cow shows up, and they're trying to butcher it, they're trying to shred it,
Starting point is 01:07:36 because they don't like the way she looks, or they don't like the fact that she's straight, or they don't like her personality. There are a lot of factors here. It's just insanity. The adults have to enter the room and straighten this thing out. Would you like to weigh in on any? We didn't talk about the, what's the USA Today's writer who wrote the column about Caitlin Clark
Starting point is 01:08:02 and compared her flopping to Emmett Till's murder? Why am I blanking on her name from USA Today? You know her name. Nancy Armour. We didn't talk about that last week. Did you have any thoughts on that? I have no thoughts on that. You don't have any thoughts on that?
Starting point is 01:08:24 None whatsoever. As a columnist, would you have ever brought Emmett Till's death into a column to compare to an athlete flopping or whining about calls? No. Did you think that was stupid of her to do that? Yeah. Am I putting the brakes on you? I'm not. No, you're not.
Starting point is 01:08:48 Are you trying to put the brakes on me? Yes. Why? You don't want to do this, buddy. Why not? Let's talk about Caitlin Clark here. And you know what the latest thing that happened with her? What?
Starting point is 01:09:07 Is Monica McNutt basically made a comment about Caitlin Clark and sisterhood said that Caitlin Clark is causing a division and that black players don't accept her because the sisterhood is about supporting one another, celebrating each other, standing together and uplifting one another. I saw Monica trending on Twitter, and so I watched a video of her talking about Caitlin Clark, and I didn't really understand what the big to do was over it. But I guess did she talk again somewhere?
Starting point is 01:09:52 I haven't seen the other part of it. I actually really like Monica. that Caitlin Clark needs to take more accountability for her role within the sisterhood of the league. Oh, God. Accountability. How about she's been accountable for major increases in salaries for the sisterhood of the WNBA? How about she's been accountable for a more luxurious travel situation than the league's ever had? They now travel privately.
Starting point is 01:10:22 They didn't used to. I mean, if these people understood how to read a balance sheet, they'd crown her queen of the sisterhood and make sure that she was pampered and always comfortable while literally carrying the league around the world on her back. This league's ridiculous. Now, Tommy, by the way, I've watched enough of her this year to know that she does whine and bitch a whole lot to referees.
Starting point is 01:10:51 She really does. Yeah. The reach of flopping to, you know, one of the most grotesque racial incidents in the history of our nation is, was too much for me. But I do watch occasionally and sometimes just highlights, man, she does try to sell some calls. But she's also had this shit kicked out of her over and over again through her first, you know, two and a half seasons. and she's been targeted. But, you know, stars, by the way, in basketball, more so than any other sport of soccer, of course.
Starting point is 01:11:33 But the stars in basketball, man, they do bitch and whine a lot, don't they? I mean, LeBron's an all-time whiner and complainer. And, but she really, and it's not always about stuff that happens to her. She's in the refs faces for things that happened to her teammates, too. There are a lot of reasons to watch her, that's for sure. Most notably being that she's really good, really good. I know that there were some questions when she came into the league
Starting point is 01:12:04 about what kind of player she would be at the professional level with grown women, but this is what year three for her, she is tremendous. I mean, every single night you look at the crawl, it's like she's setting some sort of combined points and assists, you know, in consecutive games record. I mean, she's done things that have never been done in the game. I don't know where she ranks among the best players in the game, but it can't be outside the top five, I would imagine.
Starting point is 01:12:32 Anyway. All right. You got anything else? Well, one final thing is on Saturday. Yeah. Is out of this bumstock. Right. The annual get-together of all my East Strasbourg and Strasbourg friends.
Starting point is 01:12:48 that we've been doing since 1993. Didn't work, didn't you take some years off from that thing? Just the COVID year. That was it? What am I thinking of? Oh, I'm thinking of Wyoming. You're thinking of Wyoming. That's long, yeah, right.
Starting point is 01:13:04 Right. Right. Yes. Now, this is, this is bumstock. Right. Driving up there, used to be some pretty wild times. Now they're pretty subdued. You know, we're just hoping that, you know, nurses and
Starting point is 01:13:18 ambulances don't have to show up. Right. As opposed to police in the old days. Yeah. But it's, fuck, we'll tell the same stories that we tell each other every year about things that happen, you know, 50 years ago, and we'll enjoy telling them to each other. We'll make each other last, even though it's the same stories. That's fun.
Starting point is 01:13:48 That's fun. And, you know, with a certain group of people, the stories can be on repeat for hours, and the laughter is still at the same level when you reconvene a year, two, or three or four years later. With you guys, it's every year. That's pretty cool that you've been doing it for that long. It is. Yeah. And I think at this stage of our lives, I think it's more important than ever. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:14:16 How many of you lost from 93? Well, I don't want to go into that. but, well, you just brought it up. You just brought it up. More important than ever because there aren't as many left anymore, is what you were saying, correct? Yes, I don't have the number. Okay. I don't have the desk toll.
Starting point is 01:14:40 The Yombe, the Bumstock desk toll for you. Did you see any of the Tony Romo video with him getting pulled over? No, I didn't. I know he got picked up for. driving under the influence. Yeah, in Milwaukee. He was coming back from a golf outing. It's not funny,
Starting point is 01:15:00 but it is funny to watch him deal with, you know, some of these tests. And he's clearly impacted. And there was an open container of alcohol in his vehicle. In all seriousness here, though, you know, there had been, you know,
Starting point is 01:15:18 sort of a growing, you know, lack of excitement about Tony Romo within CBS. And there were lots of stories over the last couple of years about, you know, he needed to get it together. He needed to be more of a preparation guy. And it wasn't what it was the first two years. And I agree with that as a viewer.
Starting point is 01:15:40 This is the kind of thing that usually in a contract, you know, because they pay him, what is it, 20 million a year, I think it is? What does Romo make at CBS? I think it's $20 million a year. But I wonder if they could get out of that. I mean, he signed a $10-year $180 million contract in 2020. Okay. Now, when you have that kind of deal, this is what I don't get.
Starting point is 01:16:08 Get a driver. Yes. Yeah, of course. I'll never understand it. Of course. Have a driver. Yes. Yeah. I wonder if CBS has a way of getting out of the deal if they want to get out of the deal.
Starting point is 01:16:25 I don't know. Yeah. All right. I think we covered a lot today. I will talk to you on Tuesday. Enjoy Bumstock. And I'll be back tomorrow, Logan Paulson.
