Tommy, I just had one of those simple pleasures in life moments.
May I share it with you?
Absolutely.
I'm all for simple pleasure.
When's the last time you had a dog in the family?
Oh, we had a dog
maybe about
15, 16 years ago.
It was not a pleasant experience
with the beagle from hell.
Oh, okay. Well,
my dog is
a joy
for everybody
in her life.
And she was sick,
this morning. So my wife took her to the vet. Turns out everything's fine. But I just went right after
the radio show today. I needed to go pick her up from the vet because no one else could do it.
And I don't know if others have this same, and I'm sure many have this same experience, because you
see it anytime you go to the vet and they bring your dog out to you. The excitement and happiness
on her face when she saw me waiting for her, it's just, it's the best.
Dogs are the absolute best.
I have a bulldog for those of you who don't know.
I have an English bulldog.
English bulldogs are just incredible dogs.
Anybody that has, you know, an English bully or even a French bulldog,
we all kind of understand the love and the loyalty and the just pleasant nature of these dogs.
But her excitement when she saw me, the way she ran and jumped into my arms, you know, you get to a point in life where that's actually nice when somebody's like really nice to you and enjoys your company.
And that to me is like...
Unconditional love.
Unconditional love.
I mean, and she jumped in the car and she hates being in the car.
She couldn't wait to get in the car
She couldn't wait to get in the car
Sit next to me
You know she was panting
She was trying to just you know
Jump all on top of me as I was driving
And then when she got home
I mean you talk about happy
I don't know
I just thought I'd share that with everybody
Because it just happened
And it was just such a nice experience
Dogs are the absolute best
You want to hear something that's interesting
We've always had a dog.
I've had a dog for my entire life.
But when Karen and I first got married, we didn't have a dog.
And when we first started to have kids, we didn't have a dog.
I think most young families understand kids, that takes up a lot of bandwidth.
And, you know, you throw a dog on top of it.
Wow.
But we got a dog when they were relatively young.
I think maybe even my third hadn't been born.
I don't think Ryan had been born when we got our first dog.
And so now we've had Lainey, she's our third dog.
The other two are, you know, long gone.
But first of all, I wasn't, I didn't want a dog.
Like, I didn't want the hassle of having a dog.
Even when we were just married without kids and then when we started to have kids,
I'm like, no.
And I put my foot down.
And I said, we're not getting a dog.
We're both working. We're busy. We travel for work.
Like it's just going to be too much.
And so I came home from a trip.
This would have been 1999, 2009, 2000, 2001, something like that.
I came home from a trip and guess what was in my home?
Yep. Yep, we had a dog.
I put my foot down and said no dog, but apparently that wasn't a dog.
enough. And of course, you know, once the kids have the dog, there's no going back. It's over.
No, you can't say take it back. No. But I have to give my wife credit because she said all along,
she said, kids should have a dog. It's a great experience. There's so much benefit that comes out of it.
And she was right, and we've had a dog ever since. And this particular dog, Lainey, our bulldog,
Our first ever bulldog is just, you know, she's just such a great dog.
And so everybody in the house, I mean, when people come home from out of town, you know, the boys, that's, they miss her more than they miss us.
You know, they can't wait to see her.
But anyway, simple pleasure in life.
So.
My experience with dogs now, we had, look, we had a Jack Russell Terrier.
Yeah.
When we moved to Maryland, we've been married about five years,
and then when we moved to Maryland, we went and got this Jack Russell Terrier, who was a great dog.
They could be temperamental, but this dog wasn't.
So he was there when both our kids were born, and they kind of grew up with him,
and he was great with the kids.
And he lived a long time.
He lived 17 years.
That's a run.
That's a run.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
got another dog.
And I remember it was a beagle, and we went to the shelter to get it.
And these animal advocates that ran the shelter, they were like used car salesmen.
These people, these bastards is what they were.
You know, they gave us the hard sell on taking this dog home.
You know, he was a beagle, still kind of a puppy, you know, looked cute in the corner.
The kids loved them.
They're giving them the hard sell.
just like somebody trying to give you the hard sell on the car to bring home.
And it turns out he had been adopted and brought back three times.
Oh, my God.
That's the dog we brought home.
And you kept it.
Well, like you said with the kids, you know.
Yeah.
Once they're in, they're in.
But he was so difficult to deal with.
I remember, you know, taken him for walks and looking for puddles with battery acid,
so he'd probably drink from it, you know?
Oh, God, that's terrible.
That's terrible.
Eventually, you know, when the kids went away, that's when we got rid of the dog, you know, moved away,
college and stuff.
And we took it, we fought, we didn't just get rid of it.
we took it to a no-kill shelter and like right around that time a beagle won the Westminster dog show.
Right.
So they became real popular.
So then somebody adopted him and he became someone else's headache.
Oh, my God.
Yeah, I mean, if you've got a, if it's a tough experience, it's, I mean, I mean, we've gotten lucky.
Look, the second dog we had wasn't my favorite.
She could be mean.
but the first dog we had and this dog are the best.
When you get a good one, there's nothing better.
I will tell you this.
I was floored by how much the vet cost floored.
You know, we've had dogs forever, but she had to have like, they gave her, I guess, some x-rays and she's fine, which is the best news.
But I got the bill, like when I'm sitting there picking her up and I'm like,
really? And the woman goes, yeah, I know, it's crazy, isn't it? And I go, I've just never seen a number like this when I've come to pick her up.
Yeah, but they had to do x-rays today. They had to do, you know, this and that. And, you know, you pay it.
We don't have insurance for the dog because bulldog insurance is difficult because bulldogs do have, you know, kind of health problems.
And, you know, especially as they get older. I mean, I think I've told you last year she had.
She had ACL surgery.
You know, that was not cheap.
But God, man, I think being a vet is a good, probably a really good high margin business because just like with kids, but even more so, I think with pets, people will just pay whatever it is and they really don't care as long as their, you know, their dog or their cat is fine.
I've never been a real cat person.
I know some cat people.
I'm not a big cat person,
but I don't have this, you know,
sort of attitude towards people with cats as more of a dog person.
I always find that interesting when people go,
ugh, I'd never have a cat.
I don't think I'd have a cat either,
but I don't have a problem with people that have cats and like cats.
I mean, they seem sweet most of the time.
I wouldn't have a cat, not a cat guy at all.
Now, basically what I do is I get to indulge once in a while
because my son, my oldest son, has a dog.
You know, Kojak from Kuwait.
That's his dog's name.
The name is Kojak.
He named them Kojak for the TV show.
And he got him from Kuwait.
He was, you know, there were dogs getting killed over there left and right.
So there was a rescue effort.
He got one, and he's an okay dog, and we get to take care of him every once in a
while he's coming up here for a week in a few weeks.
And he's an easy dog to take care of.
I'm...
You mean that?
And watching Facebook videos of dogs playing with crows, that's basically my dog pleasure.
Oh, I am a follower of so many Bulldog, you know, Twitter accounts, just to sit there and watch the...
Because there's so many... Bulldogs just are very similar.
They're very stubborn dogs.
and just the way they behave or, and it's like looking at your own dog, you know, most of the time.
It's just kind of funny story.
By the way, what did you say?
You said they were killing dogs in Kuwait?
I'm not familiar with this.
Well, I don't know.
They weren't the only things dying in Kuwait at one point.
Understood.
And so I guess, you know, there was a rescue effort for dogs over there.
And the dog, look, dog clearly has PTSD.
He's scared of everything.
And my son has had the dog for four or five years now,
and he's still scared of everything.
So, you know, he couldn't just get a dog from the shelter down the street.
You had to get one from Kuwait.
Yeah.
That seems like a lot of trouble.
All right.
Let's get to some topics that I think more people would prefer.
Well, I just wanted to give a shout out to somebody first.
Okay.
Go ahead. Shout out.
Okay. I want to give a shout out to the Frederick Rotary Club.
I was the guest speaker yesterday at their luncheon for the Frederick Rotterbury Club,
and it's a great group of people, and I had a wonderful time.
I want to thank Rocky McIntosh, not the former...
The linebacker? No. No. For the guy, a real estate guy up here in Frederick with the same name,
and he's a big fan of our podcast.
He listens all the time, and he asks me if I'd be a speaker.
And I had a great time, and I just wanted to say thank them for having me.
You know, I think I told you this last week, and I'm pretty sure we didn't talk about it on the air,
but last week I spoke at this.
It was the Catholic Business Network's Youth Coach Hall of Fame induction ceremony.
I, to be honest with you, had no idea.
But it's kind of cool and there are a lot of coaches in.
No, I was not going in as an inductee.
I actually have never been a CYO coach.
I coached a lot of travel teams, AAU kind of style teams.
But anyway, when I walked in, I knew a lot of the people there,
but somebody came up to me and said, glad you're here because last time you had Tom do it.
I didn't remember this.
But you did this, you actually did the same thing that I did last week or two weeks, no, last week.
You did it a couple of years ago.
And so they said, and I said, well, Tom was probably great.
And they said he was great.
But basically, all he talked about was boxing.
And I said, well, that's Tommy for you.
He's a Hall of Fame boxing writer.
Did you tell a lot of boxing stories at this one?
No, no, I broke it up.
You know, we talked about Ravens, talked about the Ravens Commanders game,
talk about the Baltimore-Washington thing,
talked about Peter Angelo's and Dan Snyder,
talked about the National Center of the U.S.
It was a much more diversified speech than the one I gave.
Look, look, that was early in the morning, Kevin.
It was early in the morning.
Yeah, okay, so I mean, I got, you know,
you're lucky you get anything out of me that early in the morning.
You know, let alone a speech.
Yeah, you're not a morning person.
All right, I want to follow up on the topic of yesterday slash last night show.
Sorry for getting the show out late.
I did have a commitment after radio, and then we didn't get the show out until late for a number of reasons.
But hopefully you have listened to it by now.
Brad Johnson was on with me yesterday.
He was great.
I was, he's such a, he's a really good person.
You know, he's coached, he's involved heavily with his kids.
You know, his son Max Johnson was the quarterback at LSU the year before Jaden Daniels got there.
Then he went to Texas A&M.
Then he's at North Carolina this year and he broke his leg.
And so his son's a tight end.
Really good guy.
Brad had some really good thoughts on Jaden Daniels and, you know, some other things as well.
but that's one of the reasons to listen to yesterday's show if you haven't already, and it's not long.
I think Brad was on with me for like 20 minutes tops.
But yesterday, Tommy, I basically said, look, if you think Adam Peters, if you think you're a player or two away on defense from having a legitimate chance to play deep into the postseason, I define that as the,
the NFC championship game, and the one or two players are available, then do it. Go get them.
You know, this is an opportunity that there are no guarantees in the future you're going to have
a chance to take advantage of. You know, four and two, atop the NFC East, a couple of weeks away
from the trade deadline. You do have needs, and if those needs are filled, there's a possibility
that you could actually do something when you get to the postseason.
So there was a lot of follow-up to the show yesterday,
and I'm going to read some of that follow-up to you.
This came from Mark.
Mark wrote, don't make trades.
They're not as close as you think, Kevin.
This is a long game.
Patience will pay off in the end.
Denny writes,
not into big splashy moves feels too much like the Snyder days.
They have enough to make the play.
that would be enough for me.
That just kind of made me laugh.
And then from Candlemaker, that's who this person is.
You have a rookie quarterback on the first year of his rookie deal,
and he's playing like he should be on the verge of getting the big contract already.
Take advantage of this very unusual situation.
Yes.
That's kind of the point. And I included that in my discussion is that, you know, they have not only gotten the quarterback right. They've gotten the quarterback right through the draft. And they have learned earlier rather than later that they got the quarterback right in the draft. You're a few years away from having to pay him. And so you've got all this cap space for the next few years, including this year. You have nine draft choices for 2025, four in the top.
100. I'm not advocating that Adam Peters be aggressive for aggressive sake. I'm saying that if he
determines that there are one to two players out there that are available that would
elevate this defense to say top half of the league, you know, somewhere around the middle
portion of the league, well, then their offense and their quarterback are good enough to make a run.
I just don't feel like right now they're good enough defensively to make a run.
I just think that they will match up with teams that are better.
And I gave Tommy a bunch of the numbers.
I've told you already, you know, no rookie quarterback's been to a Super Bowl,
no rookie quarterbacks even has won a Super Bowl.
Only five rookie quarterbacks that have started the entire season have made it to the title games.
And those teams had excellent defenses.
And then more recently, if we don't want to look all the way back,
The Chiefs are the only, the 2021 Chiefs are the only team in the last four years to get to an AFC or NFC title game with a back half of the league defense.
And of course, they had Patrick Mahomes.
And they didn't win the Super Bowl.
They got beaten the AFC title game at home by Cincinnati.
They had the 22nd ranked DVOA defense.
So if you believe that you got to be better on defense to make a run,
and then you believe that there are players out there that you can go get that can get you to that point,
I think you should do it.
The idea from Denny, big splashy moves, feels like the Snyder days, they've got enough to make the playoffs,
that would be enough for me.
I understand that when you are thirsty and really parched to the point of taking anything from anybody,
any drop of liquid, you know, the playoffs would be phenomenal.
But you've got to deal with the reality of the situation, which is they've got a quarterback playing at a very high level.
The offense is elite level offense.
Here's a number for you, Tommy.
Somebody sent this to me.
First six games in the last 30 seasons of NFL football.
The highest percentage of drives ending in a score.
Washington, number one on the list.
first six games, 30 years of the NFL, their 61.8% clip of drives ending in a score is number one all time.
The other teams, the 2000 Greatest Show on Turf Rams, all right?
They averaged like 37 points a game that year.
The 2007 Colts, the 2015 Patriots, and of course the 2007 Patriots who went undefeated during
the regular season.
Now, these four teams, only one of them got to a Super Bowl, the 2007 Patriots,
and with the exception of the 2000 Rams, the other teams did have good defenses.
But still, that's the point, right?
Is they have right now through six games an offense that's borderline historic.
You know, it's top two or three in the league, number two per DVOA,
add a player or two, if that player or two is available,
if there isn't a player out there that's going to elevate your defense,
or if he is, he's not available to you for whatever,
then this is not a conversation worth having.
This suggests that Denzel Ward or Max Crosby or Zedarius Smith or, you know,
Hassan Reddick are getable, you know, and I would do it if I thought
that it could get me to the NFC title game minimum.
Okay.
I understand your point about, you know, you have to take advantage of opportunities when they come up.
You can't assume the opportunities will always be there.
You know, we'll just sit past six here, this year, we'll get them next year.
You can't afford to do that.
Let me ask you this, though.
If they don't make a trade, will you still say, well, Adam Peters was right?
I mean, I have a lot of trust in Adam Peters right now. Remember, I am benefit of the doubt, Kevin, right now.
That's right. And so I... So my point is that...
But let me just... And Adam Peters doesn't make the trade, it's because the people who are available,
either the price was too high or he didn't think they'd be good fit, right?
That's what I hope the answer would be.
last one. Because what I wouldn't want the answer to be is it's not our time. We don't think like,
we're thinking long term. We don't want to, we don't want to part with any of our, you know,
cap space or our draft choices for, you know, the possibility of being a little bit better in
making a run. We don't want to do that. I don't think that would be the answer. Look, he came from
an organization that made one of the biggest in-season trades in recent NFL history, the trade for
Christian McCaffrey, which was high-priced, high-profile, and by the way, it worked.
You know, we've seen a lot of those deals work, the Von Miller deal for the Rams in 2021.
I mean, these were players, he was a player on an expiring contract, and the Rams gave up a bunch
to bring him there, and he made the difference in a Super Bowl run and a Super Bowl run and a Super Bowl
Bowl trophy. They won it all in 21.
So these things do occasionally work, and he was part of one. Now, they didn't win it that
year. Remember, the quarterbacks all got injured in the NFC championship game against
the Eagles. But I would want the answer to be the players that we could have gotten,
we didn't think could elevate our defense enough to make a difference.
Or it would not be a good fit.
Or, you know, we are also simultaneously creating this culture that's a long-term thing, and we didn't, you know, that would have been, you know, a culture risk, and we didn't want to take that risk.
I'd be fine with those answers.
I'd be fine with those answers.
I would be.
Okay.
So, we would never know the true answer.
Probably not.
I think, yeah, maybe we'd.
Maybe we would.
But if he doesn't, I mean, you're just going to have to continue, say, well, there were good reasons for not doing it.
Yeah.
Right?
Yes.
I think I would say that unless he was asked about it or Quinn was asked about it.
And they said, you know, we're just really happy with what we have.
And we're playing the long game here.
We are.
But you wouldn't even know if that was true of what they're telling you.
Fair enough.
Fair enough.
Let me just say this.
No, they might have, they might have been in on Reddick,
but they felt he was a problem player and wouldn't fit in their locker room.
They're never going to tell you that.
Here's what I would guess.
I would guess that these conversations are taking place,
that they're not sitting back and saying,
no, no, we're ahead of schedule here,
but we're not going to pounce on being ahead of schedule and make a big mistake.
No, they're considering their current situation, which is a situation that they very likely did not anticipate six weeks ago.
So you mean this is not a situation where Bruce Allen is telling Doug Williams don't pick up the phone.
Exactly.
Okay.
They're not sitting there saying, nope, no, don't pick it up.
It's just somebody trying to bug us for a trade.
Nope.
Yeah, I mean.
They're not doing that.
You know, I've seen, you know, everybody's now writing the columns on all the different, you know, websites about, you know, potential trades. And I saw one today, which is Washington trading for T. Higgins. I think it's interesting that a lot of people around the league, I saw one that suggested Washington trade for Deonti Johnson, that the second wide receiver seems to be the focus of the outside this market, NFL media. I mean, for us, for me, let me speak for myself.
their defense is bad.
Yeah.
They do, their defense is not good enough to, you know, and the idea of, okay, give it time.
You know, Smoot was on with me the other day and he said, look, when you have a new coordinator and you have all these new players, six games is not enough.
You've got to give it time.
They do have some good players.
They do have some good players.
They do.
But what we've seen in six games, it's like, okay.
No, they don't.
No, they do.
Frankie Louvo is a good player.
Yeah, I mean, of course, they have a handful.
good players. But they don't have a good
unit. Yeah. You know?
No, but... I'm sorry, but you're never going to hear
with all due respect, Fred Smoot's
never going to tell you anybody's bad.
Okay, well, that's
unnecessary because it's not, you're, you were just looking to take
a shot at Smoot. No, I wasn't. Yes, you were.
No, I wasn't. You brought him up. Well, because
he is very positive, and when anybody's just always
positive, you look to get in there to take a
shot. I was introducing it into the
conversation from the conversation, and it is true. They have some good players. You know,
Frankie Louvre is good. Bobby Wagner is still a really good player. I think Juan Martin is a good
player. I think we're going to find out that Johnny Newton is a good player. Dorrance Armstrong is
probably a good player. As a unit, as a group, they have not played well.
Right. You still mention a minority of the unit so far. There's more players.
that you haven't mentioned, then you have.
I didn't say, I didn't say that they had a lot of good players.
I said that Fred said six games with all of their new players and a new scheme,
it takes some time, and they do have a couple of good players.
A couple of good players.
I think it's Mealy Mouse.
What?
I think it's Mealy Mouse.
They're a bad unit.
They are now.
Yes.
He did.
He doesn't disagree with that.
Then why trade if you think you're going to get better?
He might not want to trade.
I'm not saying that I agree with him.
I'm saying there's this idea that maybe they could develop,
that the communication could be better,
that six games is too small of a sample size
when you have all of these new players and new coaches,
and they do have a couple of good players.
I feel like there's a lot of limitation to what they have right now.
And it really starts with two undeniable facts at this point about this defense.
They don't have a legitimate pass rusher that can really get after the quarterback,
and they don't have one corner that can really cover.
And that's a problem in today's NFL.
You've got to have one or the other, and really the former.
You've got to have a pass rush, you know,
and then you've got to be a defense that has a chance to take the ball away.
I don't see this defense being a lot better than what we've seen.
Now, the good news is, like we said on Monday and Tuesday,
they're not going to face Lamar Jackson and Derek Henry again.
You know, they won't have to do that the rest of the way.
But I think it is, you know, limiting.
And yeah, I would do something about it.
And I would bet that they recognize that if they did something about it,
they could improve it, and by improving it, it would increase their chances of winning playoff
games plural.
But the issue will come down to whether or not there's somebody out there that they think
really can drastically improve their defense.
And by the way, that person's got to be available.
So, yeah, if they don't make a deal.
Let me back up what started this before I got to smoot.
A lot of people are thinking receiver.
You know, I'm okay with what they have offensively.
now. If you told me that they got Deonti Johnson for, you know, a conditional fourth rounder or something like that, I'd be fine with that. Because I like Noah Brown and I think McCaffrey's got a chance to be good. But right now you've got one guy that's really good and that's Terry. You know, T. Higgins was this suggested trade. If I'm Cincinnati, I'm not trading him. Contract or no contract. They're still in this thing. And that may be the best pairing of wide receivers in the league.
Jamar Chase and T. Higgins would push as the best receiver on the team. I mean, I think he's a
notch below Terry, but he's excellent. It's defense that I'd be focused on. If Max Crosby or
Denzel Ward or Zedarius Smith or somebody throughout Miles Garrett might be available, if Cleveland
just goes wholesale selling, and you like the people, you like how they fit into your culture,
and they're available, go get that player or players.
And let's go try to win 12 games, get the number one seed, and get to a Super Bowl.
Because their offense is good enough.
Their Super Bowl, their offense is Super Bowl caliber.
Well, you know, I don't know if they have a Super Bowl offense.
They have a Super Bowl quarterback.
Okay.
Yeah.
I don't know if they have a Super Bowl offense.
Well, I just gave you the points per drive stat, and they're number one in the last 30 years.
I get that.
I understand that.
But, you know, it's not a Super Bowl offensive roster.
They have a Super Bowl quarterback who's changing everything.
Well, Kansas City hasn't had necessarily a Super Bowl offensive roster either.
I mean, they've had Kelsey, and they've had the quarterback, and when they had to
re-kill, that was, you know, that was a lot of weaponry, but they didn't have that last year,
and they still won it as, you know, a team that literally kind of just kind of puttered through
the regular season offensively.
But a unit that has been together for a couple of years.
Fair enough.
With a coach that's been there for 10 or 12 years.
That's true, too.
And the quarterback wasn't a rookie either.
Right.
It's not comparable.
I mean, this is something.
what Jane Dan's is doing
we've never seen before.
Okay, and that could lift them
offensively
to compete for a Super Bowl.
Yes.
But that's a rising ties lifting all boats.
That's not basically the Queen Mary
arriving into port.
Well, I love what he's doing
to rise this tide, because it's lifting everything around him.
He's been great.
It really is.
Yeah.
It's been fun.
I mean, you know, I mean, people, I know I get people, like, some people criticize.
It's so funny because there's people now who are criticizing me for being too positive.
Okay.
Who cares about these people?
We've said that before.
But it's funny.
I'm too excited about the quarter of.
Well, you are.
But this is something that we've never seen before.
This isn't just a good rookie quarterback.
This is the best rookie performance we've ever seen.
Yeah, I just don't understand when you get the person that will say to you,
well, that's not what you said 10 years ago.
You know, you said 10 years ago, they sucked.
They weren't any good.
Yeah, well, they are completely different now.
You know, if Tommy was a restaurant reviewer and he went to a place and he gave him a terrible review 10 years ago because they served shitty food and then he went back 10 years later and they had changed management and they were serving what's that sandwich that you love so much?
Like they were selling, is it the Monte Cristo?
Is that the one that you love?
I love my Monte Cristo.
Yeah, you love your Monte Cristo.
They're serving Monte Cristo's and the best in town.
So of course now, Tommy, the restaurant reviewer is going to give it an A-plus.
Things change people, and because of it, your opinion can change.
It's okay.
All right.
I have something that I want to share with everybody.
I was doodling around this morning, looking at the NFC standings, looking at some of the schedules.
And I do think Washington is going to win the NFC East.
I think there's a really good chance of that.
They are the favorite to win the NFC East.
But I think it could include a lot more than that.
I'll explain when we come back right after these words from a few of our sponsors.

odds to reach the playoffs, Washington now minus 220.
They're a big time favorite to make the playoffs.
If you say no to the playoffs, you get plus 176 back.
The point spread Sunday is eight still.
Washington an eight-point favorite over Carolina at home.
As I mentioned earlier in the week, the largest favorite they have been since 2017.

So I was looking at schedules and the NFC standings.
and I know that I don't love the schedule game,
but I was just looking to see what teams in the NFC had
because I had this thought, Tommy, that,
all right, Washington can definitely win the division, right?
They're four and two, they're already in first place.
Dallas looks like they stink.
The Giants are probably too far back.
The Eagles, I don't want to say too far back,
but they've got some injuries they're dealing with.
Philadelphia seems to be dysfunctional,
and Washington's got a legitimate chance to win the division.
Beyond that, they've got a chance,
to win 11 games for the first time since 1991.
I would agree with that number in particular.
This is definitely in play.
Things could change.
They could be ravaged with injuries and all would change.
But, you know, they have teams like the Panthers,
who I'm going to say again,
the Panthers have a running back in Hubbard,
who is really good, number three in the league in rushing yards,
number one in the league in yards per carry in the NFC,
He is excellent.
They can run the football.
They've got two decent receivers.
We've got a bad defense.
It's not going to surprise me if this is a more competitive game than we think.
But anyway, the Panthers, they've got the Giants, they've got the Titans, they've got the Saints.
They got the Cowboys twice.
You know how Dallas for years has said, we got Washington twice.
You know, chalk those up.
Now we got Dallas twice.
I mean, I'm already at four games that on paper look winnable.
I mean, the Saints, who knows what they'll be.
look like by the time you get there. The Titans just stink, although they're not terrible on
defense, but they have a terrible offense. The Giants and the Panthers. I mean, I didn't even
mention the Bears or the Steelers at home, but, you know, the Cowboys twice. You figure you split
with the Eagles. You do have the Falcons late in the season. But 11 is within reach right now here
on October 17th. And so, Tommy, what would 11 wins mean in the NFC playoffs? As the
NFC East champs at 11 and 6, there is a chance it could mean an awful lot.
The NFC North has four teams currently, four and two or better.
This is the best aggregate record for a division through six weeks in NFL history.
Minnesota's 5 and 0, Detroit's 4 and 1, Green Base 4 and 2, Chicago is 4 and 2.
These teams all play each other the rest of the way.
only been one division matchup, Minnesota and Green Bay played at Lambo.
Assume these teams just start beating the hell out of each other and splitting here and they
are winning games or losing games. Then you add to that, I mean, Detroit, in addition to all
these division games, they play Houston, they play the Bills, they play the 49ers, the Packers still
have games against Houston, big matchup this weekend against Houston, 49ers.
Seahawks on the road.
Like there are other games they've got that are rough too.
So let's just say the division winner there wins 11.
Maybe it's 12, but let's just say it's 11.
The NFC South winner is probably not going to win more than 10 games,
whether it's Atlanta or Tampa.
It's probably a 10-win division.
And then you get the West, you get the 49ers,
who right now are 3 and 3.
But the 49ers play the Chiefs this week.
They play the Bucks.
They play the Packers on the road, the bills on the road, they play the lions later in the year.
What if the 49ers only manage 11 wins in winning the NFC West?
Well, Washington would be right there in some tie-breaking situations for the number one seed in the NFC.
Wow.
And if you win 12...
That means the NFC Championship game.
at Northwest Stadium.
I mean, look, I think 11 wins would give them a chance at the number one seed,
but it would definitely put them in play for the number two seed.
The number two seed has to play wild card weekend.
They play that game at home against the seven seed,
but then the next round if they win is also at home.
So they would potentially have as the two seed two home games to get,
to an NFC championship game.
So.
You know, when I did this schedule thing last week just in my head, I have them at 11 wins.
Yeah.
That was, I mean, I think that's perfect.
I think that's feasible for them.
I hate doing this.
I really hate doing this, but they're four and two right now.
Let's assume the Panthers are five and two.
Let's go ahead and say the Bears at home, six and two.
The Giants on.
Bears? The Bears is in Chicago, right?
No, it's here. No, it's here.
It is. Yeah. So let's say six and two.
Then they have the Giants on the road.
The Giants, I know that I beat the drum for them for their defense, but it is legit.
It's also banged up. Who knows what they'll look like?
But it's possible Washington will be favored. How about seven in two?
Then the Steelers at home, all due respect to one of the great organizations in the game.
and a great defensive team.
They're terrible on offense.
They don't even know who their quarterback is.
Eight and two.
Okay.
Now you're going to Philly for Thursday night.
Let's say that that's a loss, eight and three.
Yes.
Yes, we know because NFCE's games are unpredictable.
Yeah, as that Giants game on the road movie.
It's not unusual to split with NFCE.
So, yeah, that's a loss.
All right.
Cowboys at home.
Nine and three. Titans at home, 10 and three. Then they're at New Orleans. It's not about who you play, but it's when you play them. So who knows? Like, it'd be great to be playing the Saints tonight, like Denver is. The Saints have everybody out. But maybe Derek Carr's back and maybe they're formidable. But I don't know. Would that be 11?
You got to make that a loss. That's a loss in the Superdome?
Yeah, that's 10 and 4.
you make that a loss? Did you just make that loss because you felt like we were getting,
the record was getting way too good?
Not because I think the Saints would be tough in New Orleans.
Okay. Ten and four. The Eagles at home, you're going to split with them, right?
11 and 4. Then you get, you know who coming into town with the Falcons.
That probably is a big game for the Falcons, maybe a big game for Washington.
It's at home.
That's a loss. Kirkland.
11 and 5 and then at Cowboys to end the season.
The Cowboys have nothing to play for.
Oh, that's a win.
You're right.
That's 12.
You know what that is, baby?
You know what that is, baby?
You know what this is, baby?
This is number one seed in the NFC without making any trades.
Oh, my God.
It's insane.
It's so dumb.
But it's not unreasonable.
No, because we certainly wouldn't be, we wouldn't be talking about this if it weren't for number five.
Yes.
Yeah.
Yes.
I mean, if number five isn't back there for any of these games changes everything.
100%.
Okay.
I just wanted to share with everybody the idea that, you know, it's not just right now, the NFC is
much more competitive and a lot deeper than people thought.
And really the AFC is the one that's going to end up with some
playoff teams probably in there with nine and eight records.
I mean, the NFC North is so good.
You know, it's not out of the realm that all four teams could make the playoffs,
which has never happened.
So we'll see.
But yeah, they've got a shot to, you know, with 11 wins,
certainly be in the hunt for a team.
two-seat at the very least, and that gives you potentially two home games, that would be interesting.
God.
Can I just give everybody that's listening to me that knows me and has access to me?
Just...
Everybody who's not using oxygen at this point.
Because I think you're probably...
You probably went to your oxygen tank after listening to that.
If you're still breathing.
If you're still breathing, if we get to these games later...
in the season and then playoff games.
Don't do what you did to me last week.
Tommy, I haven't told you about this.
You probably got the same thing.
I got calls from people I haven't heard from in forever.
Texts, emails.
Hey, any chance you can get me a pair for the Ravens game?
I'm not stub hub, nor is Tommy.
And really and truly, because we're not in that situation,
we were in for years, which was we were the flagship station for the team.
We were owned by Red Zebra, which Dan Snyder was the majority shareholder of.
And we did back then have access to things like tickets.
I had good friends saying, dude, I can't get them any chance I can get a pair for the Ravens game.
And I just said, no, I have no way.
Like, I can get a credential for myself.
Maybe.
Maybe I could get a credential for my.
but probably not for Baltimore last week.
I'm not on the beat covering the team.
You got one.
You're a columnist, but you probably put in for that well in advance, right?
No, it's a storm of procedure.
I bet you you could have gotten one.
Okay.
But I can't get, you know, friends' credentials.
You know what it was.
If you do that, then you won't be getting many credentials yourself after that.
If they end up being a one seed with a bunch of playoff games at home,
you're on your own.
But they're always available in the aftermarket.
But God, Tommy, in all seriousness,
those tickets were a fortune for the Ravens.
And you know, that's funny because there were empty seats there.
Well, I mean, that happens sometimes
when some of those seats don't get bought.
You know, they always price themselves out of it.
There were decent chunks of empty seats throughout the stadium.
I bet you that there are plenty of tickets for the game this week.
but I would bet the Bears game is going to be quite the ticket, don't you think?
Yes.
Oh, yes.
Yes.
Marquis showdown between the two young quarterback, Chicago has a strong away fan base.
Absolutely.
All right.
I'm looking right now, not unreasonable at all.
Upper deck, you know, a couple hundred bucks.
You know, lower level, you know, 300 to, you know, 500.
I mean, that's expensive.
Those prices double if both teams continue to play like they have.
Well, Chicago, Chicago's got a buy week, so they're coming in here for one-two.
And Washington's got the Panthers.
So, yeah, so that's, you know, I bet the Panthers tickets are pretty cheap to get in.
I wonder if they'll sell out Sunday.
They have not sold out a home game yet.
It's supposed to be a nice weather game.
It's a beautiful weather.
It's a beautiful day.
I mean, you're right. The last home game, which was the first time in recent memory, they had a real home field advantage with the crowd.
Right.
They had 59,000. They're about four or five thousand short of a sellout.
I bet Sunday doesn't sell up, but I bet you the Bears game sells out, and I guarantee you the Steelers game sells out.
The Cowboys game sells out. The Titans, who knows, and then they've got the Eagles and the Falcons, those games may sell out.
All right, it is time for Tommy's weekly prediction.
Washington, Carolina.
What do you got?
Well, after that ridiculous road to the Super Bowl that we just drove down,
there's no way I could pick them to do anything other than win on Sunday.
I've got the commanders winning 37 to 24,
Jayden Daniels throwing three touchdown passes, two of them this time, not to Terry McCluren, but to Zach Ertz.
Does Zack Ertz? All right.
Does Ertz have a touchdown catch this year?
I don't know if he does, but they finally started to connect, I think, a little bit better in this past game.
Hertz does not have a touchdown catch this year.
The receivers with touchdown catches are Terry with four, Diami Browns,
Brown's got one, Trent Scott's got one.
I did want to mention real quickly that apparently today, and I do want to go back and listen
to it, but Cliff Kingsbury talked about the flea flicker screen to Eckler, which just
was such a wild play, in part because the pitch back from McNichols to Jaden was off, and
Jaden had to athletically catch it and then immediately in one motion get it to Echler.
But it's just that, you know, I've never seen that kind of flea flicker with the plan being a screen pass.
And it just was really so unique and it worked clearly.
And he was asked today about it.
And he said that David Blow, who is one of their assistant coaches and people think is brilliant and is going to be a coordinator at some point down the road.
and maybe more, that at Purdue, he played for a coach there who designed that play.
And it had to be, what's his face?
It had to be Jeff.
Oh, shit, I'm blanking on the Purdue coach because he was very creative offensively.
But anyway, loved the play.
The guy that's at Louisville right now, forgetting his name.
I don't know.
But super creative, and he was at Purdue.
And Blow said it came.
from him, and it was Blow's idea to put together the play.
And loved, I love that Cliff Kingsbury's just like, hey, bring me, you know what?
I might come up with an idea for a play and send it to Cliff.
I think you're due, buddy.
I think you're due.
All right, 3724.
When's the last time you did that?
What, like wrote a letter to somebody out there?
Yeah.
It's been a while.
You were in the business, right?
Oh, yeah.
I mean, Scott, one of Van Pelt's favorite stories is when I wrote North Turner, a long letter in FedExed it to him.
And it was, they were playing in a game.
They were down by a point and they had no timeouts left and the other team was running plays.
And I sent him a letter saying, next time that happens, let them score.
Because that's your only chance.
You let them score.
You'll get the ball back down.
Eight.
You've got a chance to go down.
This was before anybody had done it.
know, the first let your score game, let the other team score game, was the Super Bowl between the Broncos and the Packers.
And the Packers let Terrell Davis score at the end so that they could get the ball back.
Because if not, you know, the clock was going to run out.
And back then, teams, you know, still ran plays instead of just taking knees all the time.
Like, they weren't sure.
And I just got the form letter back saying, thank you so much for your interest with,
and the Redskins signed, you know, Norv Turner, head coach.
You know, I think Doc would say, coach, I think you're due for another correspondent.
No, I wouldn't.
I've got no good ideas.
I've got no good ideas for Cliff Kingsbury.
That was back when I really think I was a bit ahead on some things when it came to kind of strategy on score and time.
And I'm not saying I was the only one.
I think a lot of people were.
the NFL was slow to catch up to some of these things that fans were all over, you know?
And now they've got most of them down.
Not all of them.
You still see the mistakes made every week.
Anyway, speaking of that, by the way, just quickly off topic, because I know you didn't see this.
But Oregon last week in what was an incredible game against Ohio State,
They, Dan Lannning, the coach of Oregon, put 12 men onto the field late in the game intentionally
to make sure that they didn't give up a big play,
but really for the purpose of Ohio State, you know, burning time on the clock
without getting a productive play but getting five yards.
But there were like 11 seconds to go and he just wanted to burn some clock.
and he made the trade five yards for about five or six seconds of clock time.
And it turned out to be, you know, the next play was Will Howard.
He scrambled. The time ran out.
Oregon won the game.
People were saying that Dan Lannning was a genius.
He was actually kind of risky, but clearly he knew the Ohio State kicker couldn't kick it from five yards closer.
And I think it was going to make it a 55 or 56-yard kick.
But anyway, the NCAA stepped in yesterday.
They closed the loophole on that.
If you have 12 players out on the field again in that situation,
the team will have the opportunity to go back and run the next play
with the same amount of time on the clock that was on the clock before the snap.
Okay.
Yeah.
And, you know, this was, you have that in the NFL now.
Remember John Harbaugh was the first one, I think,
to start putting players in to hold intentionally.
at the end of games or halves to force field goals or to force them to score on one play.
You know, like the teams got first and goal at the five with, let's say, 11 seconds to go in the game.
He would hold pass interference.
He would not let them score.
He wanted the clock to burn down so that they had one play to attempt it on.
Or they'd kick a field goal if it was a three-point game.
And they close that loophole, which is now they'll put the time back on the clock.
for the offensive football team if they want the time back on the clock.
All right, enough of that.

There's a towering drive down the line.
Otani's boring.
410 feet.
Otani hit that one into the second deck.
in New York last night.
Eighth inning, the game was pretty much decided already,
but that was a towering shot from Shohei Otami.
The Dodgers took game three, eight to nothing.
They've got a two to one lead.
Game four tonight between the Mets and the Dodgers.
Before that, it'll be the Yankees and Cleveland in game three.
You probably know that score as you're listening to this podcast already.
Tommy, tell us about Shelly's.
Well, Kevin, you know, since, I mean, you're a weather guy, and I figure, you know, weather guys know the calendar and no farming.
I know you've got a little bit of farming blood in you.
This is harvest time, isn't it?
I think it's harvest time, the fall.
Yeah, that sounds right.
Okay.
Okay, well, that's good.
I don't know anything about that.
Because Shelley's back room at 1331 F Street, northwest in the district, it's harvest in the district.
It's harvest time there, and they're special this week is harvest ham Angus Burger.
Okay?
You start off with that half pound of Shelley's custom blend, like I've said before,
they don't buy their ground beef at Giant or Safeway.
They have a special blend just made for Shelly's with honey ham, melted cheese,
on a butter toasted potato roll.
I love potato.
Don't you love potato roll?
Of course.
Who doesn't with a burger especially?
Yeah.
Absolutely.
You know, that's one of their specials this week.
So it's harvest week at Shelley's.
Come down and enjoy a harvest ham Angus burger.
And then harvest your nuts, as Eddie Jordan would say,
with a nice smoke from their top-level choice of cigars.
You can find out more about their menu of food, the menu of drinks, and their menu of excellent cigars at shelley's backroom.com.
Let me just tell you, I'm looking at the Shelley's menu right now, the specials.
And this harvest ham Angus Burger looks great.
And they've got a Cuban pork loin sandwich as well.
That looks pretty good.
Their food is excellent.
Go to Shelley's backroom.
You know what?
This Sunday, Sunday is a 4 o'clock.
game, right, 405,
went to the starting time.
405.
405 start.
You got plenty of time to grab lunch at
Shelly and have a smoke
before you head over to the stadium.
All right.
Otani,
Dodgers, Mets,
Yankees, Judge hit one the other night,
you know, after our Tuesday show.
Your thoughts on where
we are in both championship series?
Well, I mean,
Yankees look like they're
dominated. The Guardian just don't seem to have enough of, but Lane Thomas carries them
offensively, and I don't think that's going to happen. So I think the Yankees are really on pace
to win this series, and they could win it in four or five games. The match is so unpredictable.
No one can predict what will happen with the Mets and the Dodgers. You know, the Dodgers are
leading two to one. They won that first game back in New York.
I'm included, the networks, and I think a lot of baseball fans would love to see O'Connie and Judge in the World Series.
And you can count me among those people who would like to see that.
Even being a former Mets fan, I think, you know, the best thing for the game, I think the most exciting matchup would be the Yankees Dodgers.
The TV ratings for the playoffs this year have been dramatically increased.
Oh, they have been? I didn't know that.
Oh, God, yeah, significantly higher than they've been sometimes as far as 10 or 15 years.
Wow. Okay.
They've been through the roof.
And, you know, we've talked about this before.
Yankees' Met World Series would not sell like Yankees Dodgers would.
Right.
So, you know, Otani, and we're watching a player for several generations,
not that's just generations, but several generations.
And I think everybody would be best served, who's not a Guardians or Mets fan with Yankees and Dodgers.
So I think that's what's going to happen.
I just think you can't predict it because the Mets –
the Mets are not where they were supposed to be this year, but yet there they are playing in the NLCS.
Right.
So are you going to be at the game Sunday?
Yes, I am.
So Darrell Green's, number 28 will be retired.
That'll make him the fifth player in franchise history to have his jersey retired.
We know that the first four, Sammy Baugh, Bobby Mitchell, Sean Taylor, and, of course, last year, Sonny Jurgensen's jersey was retired.
Darrell Green's number 28 is retired, certainly deserving of.
of it.
Darrell Green, you know, I was thinking about the defensive side of the ball in terms of
this franchise and who would be the first defensive player you would think of to put on, say,
in all-time Redskins, you know, Washington football team commanders.
We can't even mention the commanders.
An all-time Redskins team.
I think Darrell Green's name would be first.
Over Kenny Houston?
I think Kenny Houston, you know.
I think Kenny Houston, we've talked about this before.
Kenny Houston is probably in terms of where he's ranked at his position,
the highest of any player that's ever played for the organization.
He is consistently ranked as a top three to five,
sometimes top two to four safety and the history of the game.
He also played half of his career in Houston before he got here.
Yes, he did.
That's a good point.
And so Darry-
And Darrell played his whole career, you know,
what, 20 years with Washington.
And I think, and I think, you know,
Sam Huff is often mentioned as, you know,
an incredible defensive player and an all-time redskin,
but really he's an all-time giant.
And I think, you know, most people know that.
Not everybody knows that.
Three or four years. Exactly.
With Washington, no,
he's a giant playing icon.
He's a Washington broadcast icon.
So I think, you know,
on offense, you've got options.
You got Sammy Ball, you got Sonny Jurgensen, you've got Rigo, you've got art, you've got, you know, you got Bobby Mitchell.
You know, you have, you've got some debates as to, all right, who would be the first offensive player that you'd put on the all-time Redskins offensive team among starters?
Defensively, I don't think there's much of a debate.
I think it's Darrell Green.
And I think you're probably right.
And I also, look, Dexter is an all-time favorite of mine, but Dexter would not rise to the level of Daryl Green, even though Dexter is a great Redskin. And to me, he's their greatest pass rusher. Dexter would be the first defensive end on an all-time Redskins defensive team. Dexter's first. It's not Charles Mann. You know, it's not anybody else you want to come up with. It's Dexter. You know, it's not Ron McDowell. You know, it's not, it's not, it's not, it's not, it's not, it's not, it's not, it's not, it's not,
not, you know, Ryan Carrigan, you know, it's Dexter.
Yeah.
And, but Daryl's number one.
And, you know, Daryl also, like Rigo,
Daryl's got indelible memories and unforgettable plays that he was a part of.
And number one on the list.
And you could debate that this is the second most famous play in franchise history
after Rigo's run.
And I think number two, honestly, would be the Daryl Grant interception return off the Dexter
Manly deflection of the Gary Hogaume pass in the NFC title game to clinch the NFC championship game.
But his punt return on January 10th, 1988, the 87 skins that went on to win the Super Bowl,
against the Bears in frigid weather at Soldier Field, is an iconic Washington Redskins play.
That is no worse on my list of the three most of the top three, third on the list of the top three most memorable plays.
That would be third.
And it's close to two, but, and remember, he's holding his rib because he, you know, tore a rib muscle on the cutback.
And you could see him when he's running down the field, holding his rib.
Not to mention the fact that in his very first game, he chased down Tony Dorset, a famous play.
in franchise history.
You know, Dorset, one of the fastest backs in the league.
This is Daryl Green's first game, and he chases down Tony Dorset on Monday night football.
Daryl Green broke up the pass intended for Darren Nelson in the championship game the week
after the punt return against the Bears to send them to Super Bowl 22.
Another famous moment.
and famous play. He ran down Eric Dickerson in a playoff game. He's been a part of just some
incredibly memorable plays in the history of the franchise, not to mention that he is, you know,
the greatest corner and I think the greatest defensive player, the first one that deserves to
be mentioned in putting together a team. His jersey totally needs to be. It's part of that list.
I've given the list before of the jerseys that should be retired.
And so congrats to him.
He was a hell of a redskin, a hell of a player.
One team in his career, 20 years, you know, crazy good,
Hall of Famer, seven-time Pro Bowl, you know, two-time world champion,
lost Super Bowl 18, obviously, but was back in a Super Bowl.
but he just never seemed to age either, Tommy, right?
He just never seemed to age.
Nope, he was still among the fastest players in the league when he retired.
A hundred percent, was always, you know, debatably the fastest man in the league, in the sport as a corner.
And, you know, when he was 40 years old and on the verge of retiring, I think he was 40.
No, he's older than 40, right?
I've got to look that up.
How old was he when he retired?
Because if it's 20 years and he came out, he was 42 years old.
He was 42 years old when he retired.
And he was probably the fastest man in the league at that point as well.
Probably.
So congrats, Daryl.
Absolutely.
Congratulations.
Well deserved.
And, you know, hopefully the organization will do them right on Sunday.
They did sunny right last year, especially after we got the Frank Herzog thing figured out.
Yeah, it kind of got lost, you know, a little bit at the moment.
Right.
I think the whole atmosphere is different this year, and I think it'll be different at the stadium this time.
That was at the end of the year of a lost season.
Yep.
You know, I don't think the enthusiasm level was nearly what it's going to be on Sunday.
The next jersey that goes in will be a debate.
I have no problem with Daryl going in right now.
You know, Sunny needed to go in, should have gone in after Bobby Mitchell.
And the next three are Art Monk, Charlie Taylor, John Riggins.
One of those three will be next.
You know, I think, you know, it should be, I don't have a problem if it's Charlie Taylor, you know, next.
Charlie Taylor is one of the greatest receivers, not only in franchise history, but in NFL history.
When he retired, he was the leader, all-time leader in past reception.
He was, and that record was broken by? Do you remember?
Do you remember the record? Do you remember who he passed?
Was it Don Hudson? I think it was Don Hudson.
And then I think...
And then...
It was Don Maynard break his record?
Oh, wait a minute.
Don Maynard that he passed, and then Charlie, and then Charlie Joyner passed him. And then I think
Steve Largent passed Charlie Joyner. Because Art Monk then passed Steve Largen, right?
Steve Largen, yeah. I think that's how it went. But the next...
I know Monk passed Largent, yes. So the next three that are in consideration, and to me the last
legitimate three that are in consideration, Taylor, Rigo, and Art Monk.
I would agree 100% with that.
So we'll see who gets in next year.
Anything else?
I got nothing else for you today, boss.
All right, then.
We are done for the day.
Don't forget, if you haven't done it,
rate us and review us on Apple and Spotify,
and follow us on Apple and Spotify as well.
All right, back tomorrow with a football Friday,
Jay Gruden included.
Darrell Green goes back deep for Washington.
Barnhart hunting against the wind out of his own end zone.
