You don't want it.
You don't need it.
But you're going to get it anyway.
The Kevin Cheon Show.
Here's Kevin.
Tommy's here.
I am here.
The show's presenting sponsor, as always, is Window Nation.
Give them a call.
86690 Nation or Windonation.com.
Tommy will have his pick for the Washington Cleveland game on the show today.
A crowd, supposed to be a big one, Sunday, big Washington crowd.
I don't know if it's a sellout yet.
I did notice that you were tweeting about the Camden Yards crowds over the very short two-game sweep series.
Orioles eliminated last evening by the Royals.
You went to game one.
Neither game was a sell-out.
That appeared to be an issue with you.
I went to both games.
Oh, you did?
I went yesterday too.
All right.
Yes.
And yesterday the crowd was far.
basketball or about 7 or 8,000 MPCs at least.
Okay.
I mean, it was like 38,000.
Why is that?
Well, some people have told me it was the first day of a Jewish holiday.
Right, Russia shot.
But that doesn't seem to be a real valid excuse for what could be the last game of the season.
It was disappointing for Orioles fans, I think.
You know, for a team that, look, they see.
struggled in the second half. They were a disappointment, but they made the playoffs for two
years in a row after five years of rebuilding, of cellar dwelling. And you would think that the
fans would exercise a little bit more patience and say, well, this is certainly better than
what we were going through five years to five years previously. But there's a lot of,
there were a lot of angry fans upset about how this team's self-destructive.
at the plate in the second half of the season.
I mean, they're lost as a team with their approach at the plate.
They scored two runs in two days.
Yeah.
But why the reaction crowd size-wise?
It was a playoff game.
No, I'm talking about it not being sold out.
You gave me what they should have been because of the five years that preceded it,
why wasn't it sold out? Why wasn't there more excitement?
See, I don't know that.
Okay.
I mean, it'd be a little bit disturbing if I would see Lurios to see all those empty seats.
For a playoff game, yes. Yeah, it would be.
Some people said, you know, because it was a day game, well, it was a 430 start yesterday.
So, you know, I mean, it was barely a day game.
You know, I think if you really wanted to be there, you would be there.
Look, if this was the nationals, people would be crucifying the national fans.
Well, they didn't sell out all those playoff games.
They didn't.
They didn't sell all.
I mean, I was at some of those games.
They weren't sold out.
But the Orioles fans will tell you that, you know, they are diehard Orioles fans.
There's more of a history of baseball in the last 70 years.
Understood.
Baltimore than there is in Washington.
Right.
So, I mean, it just was not a good look all the way around, on the field and in the stands.
I mean, I do understand the, you know, late afternoon starts.
You know, people work, and I know it's the playoffs, and I've been to Camden Yards,
not in the last two years, but going back in time, I've been to Camden Yards for some of those afternoon
playoff games.
It's tough.
When the Nats had, I think their very first playoff game was an afternoon game against the Cardinals in that series that they lost in that, you know, hideous game five.
Right.
And I think that I think the start time was like 12 noon.
I think you and I did the show from there right before the game.
12 noon is not 40.
I get it.
I understand that.
But it's still during a workday.
on a weekday.
All I know is if it was my team, I'd have been there.
Simple as that.
I would imagine that Philly and New York in Chicago
and those places are completely sold out for a playoff game at any time.
I don't know that for sure, but I'm assuming that that's true.
I'll tell you what, the games yesterday, you know,
we talked about on Tuesday show, we talked about the
The Braves Mets games, or that first game, that crazy, you know, 8 to 7 game.
The games yesterday, I mean, the Tigers rallying in the 8th to eliminate Houston, Baltimore, KC,
the Brewers had that, you know, two-run homer in the 8th, and what's his face?
Chirillo had two home runs in the game.
I did not watch much of Padres Braves, but the Braves had an at-bat in the 9th down 5 to 4.
You know, the day before the games were pretty exciting, including the.
the Royals' Orioles game as well.
I hope we see more of that.
Tonight we've got...
I thought the wild card games were exciting.
Yeah.
Only one of them is going to a third game, though.
That's the Mewors tonight.
And I'll certainly be watching that.
Here's what's interesting, though, about the San Diego Padres.
They just posted a notice that says,
heck, because they're going to play the Dodgers in the playoffs.
Right up the road.
Yep.
Echo Park is located in San Diego.
Sales to this event will be restricted to residents of San Diego County,
Southern Orange County, Western Arizona, Las Vegas, and the surrounding area,
and all of Baja, California.
Residency will be based on credit card billing address.
Borders by residents outside San Diego County, Southern Orange County,
Western Arizona, Las Vegas, and the surrounding area
and all of Baja, California,
will be canceled without notice and refunds given.
They want their fans in the park.
Good for them.
That's OG.
That's an original gangster right there, baby.
They beat the Dodgers a couple of years ago in the playoffs.
They did because that was the year they lost to the Phillies
in the NLCS.
Yeah, but my point is, we hear from owners locally all the time that, you know, this is beyond
their control.
They can't control the sales from visiting fans.
Apparently, if you've got enough guts, you can.
Yeah.
Yeah, I guess.
But, you know, when you do it, you have to do it knowing that the residents in San Diego
County, South Orange County,
Baja,
Vegas, and parts of Arizona
are going to buy up all of the tickets
available because
it's not like you want to walk
away from revenue that you
would have generated without the
actual people that you want to buy the
tickets being willing to do so.
So you can do that in the postseason.
Well, then you're putting it
on the fans. Yeah, you're putting it on the fans.
You're putting it on the fans.
Step up. Yeah. You know, I guess in Baltimore,
that wouldn't work.
Look, Baltimore's been able to draw from two markets forever,
including after the Nats came here.
I know.
I know so many of my friends who are at Camden Yards the last two days.
Because they are Orioles fans.
I mean, they root for the Nats and they're Nats fans too,
but the excitement over the Orioles being in the postseason the last two years is,
you know, they're into it.
Scott threw out the first pitch.
You told me about that on the podcast.
I look there.
Yeah.
He did a good job, didn't he?
He did a great job.
He threw from the mound at nice form.
You know, he looked good.
I told you.
He's a baseball player.
He was an excellent pitcher.
Yeah.
What did he say to me?
I wrote it down because I was going to tell me.
And he wore Eddie Murray's number when he was out there.
I know.
I saw that.
Yeah.
He said it was honestly beyond whatever I thought.
Very, very cool.
Too much.
he was well received yeah well he's you know he is for Maryland sports fans kind of an important figure
Tommy I've told you this before I mean it's you know if we're out in just a normal place
you know in Bethesda DC or whatever that's one thing I mean he gets I mean he is the thing
about Scott, for those of you that don't know, he's 6-6, so he stands out to begin with.
But, you know, he gets, you know, kind of mobbed in those situations. But at Maryland,
I mean, it's a scene. I'm talking about in college. Well, I know at Maryland after school,
but I mean people that don't really pay attention to Maryland college sports. Right.
He's still, I think, a representative figure to them on ESPN. Yeah, well, I think Orioles fans know.
Yeah, Orioles fans know that he's a big Orioles fan.
I mean, the Orioles have already always been super important to him.
I mean, right up there, you know, with the Terps as favorite teams.
Well, he got a really good reception.
Hey, we didn't talk about this, but I just want your quick thoughts on last week when the A's played their last game in Oakland.
It got a lot of attention.
You know, they're going to Vegas.
Eventually, they're going to play in Sacramento.
this, you know, Fisher, the owner's moving them out of there.
We've never talked about the A's moving, I don't think.
What's your reaction to it?
Well, I'm never a big fan of a fan base being abandoned like that.
I mean, the owner, it was kind of a destructive situation.
He didn't do anything to help the situation by really refusing to negotiate with the city in earnest
to try to keep the team there.
Okay, this has been a horse race
to see who gets to Las Vegas first,
because everyone thinks there's a pot of goal there now.
And this guy, you know, wants to be there,
but that stadium is kind of up in the air right now.
I mean, it will probably get built,
but there's a lot of questions about whether
whether I'll get the financing or not.
But I might want to point out that in Kansas City,
about maybe 70 years ago, a little bit less than 70 years ago,
there was a fan base that felt abandoned
when the A's moved from Kansas City to Oakland.
Well, I mean, yeah, a lot of teams in sports were somewhere else original.
And then for those Kansas City fans, you know,
the Philadelphia fans before them probably felt abandoned.
six, let Philadelphia to go to Kansas City.
Yeah.
Okay.
I mean, I think that when I saw a lot of the reaction from media types about how sad it was that the A's were leaving Oakland.
By the way, I think I've told you this before, but my favorite team when I was a kid, I did not adopt the Orioles.
I think I've told you that before.
when the Oakland A's, when I was a kid, a child of the 70s and the Oakland A's had those wild uniforms
and they were winning the World Series, I became an A's fan.
I've told you that people.
Three years in a row.
Yeah, I mean, you know, from Joe Rudy to Vita Blue, Sal Bando, like I, like, I was, I've told you this before,
I was a big baseball fan.
Even without a team when I was a kid, I had a massive baseball card collection.
Andy Wright, who was a kid in my neighborhood, he was a couple of years older, he had moved into the neighborhood from Jersey.
He was a big Mets fan.
And he and I would literally, with a wiffle ball and a bat, we would play in this one yard in the neighborhood, we would play out the entire world series between the A's and the Mets.
Like the batting order, you know, the whole thing.
And I was a big A's fan.
So as a kid, I didn't have a team.
I wasn't into the Orioles, whatever.
The bottom line is, this team has not been supported for years locally,
attendance-wise.
It's been terrible for the most part.
And I understand after all of these years, there's a connection to the team,
and it's part of the community and the whole thing.
but and this owner apparently is a POS.
I mean, big time.
You know, I don't know a lot about them, but I read a little bit about them last week.
But, you know, when you do buy a team and you do pay a lot of money for a team and nobody's buying tickets, you know, you got to figure out the business part.
And I, look, the Raiders are gone, the A's are gone, the Warriors moved into San Francisco.
if you guys know anything about the Bay Area,
Oakland and San Francisco are completely different.
You know, it's kind of like Baltimore and Washington,
but they're completely different.
And I do feel badly for, like, Oakland, you know, sports fans
that everything is gone.
That would be horrendous.
But as far as the A's go, they weren't supported.
Am I wrong?
Well, they weren't supported, but they weren't very good
because there was no, they didn't spend money on them.
Right.
The new owner in particular.
And they played in one of the worst stadiums in baseball.
I mean, the Oakland Coliseum was a terrible.
I was in the Oakland Coliseum press box once when a rat ran under my legs.
Okay.
I had a very good friend from high school.
She went to Cal Berkeley.
She worked for the A's for years.
I mean, she was, Susan was like senior VP of sales and marketing,
and I went to a couple of games back in the 90s when I was traveling to the Bay Area a lot.
I went to the Coliseum and went to a couple of games with her.
Yes, it was a shitty stadium, but, you know, it wasn't the worst place I've ever seen a game.
But I know that in 2024 it was probably.
one of the worst stadiums in the league.
The bottom line is you've got to have good teams and you've got to draw fans or you're not
making money and as a new owner, if I'm not making money after what I just spent on the
team, I've got to come up with some solutions.
But it sort of sounded like he bought the team ultimately to move it.
Yeah.
And this is the first time baseball has allowed an owner to move a team since Bob Short
moved the senators.
Exactly.
I saw that.
That's crazy.
Because the Expos, when they moved from Montreal to Washington,
were owned by Major League Baseball.
Right.
They did not give permission to a single owner to move that franchise.
I saw that distinction.
And that'll be collectively.
Yeah.
Yeah, I saw that.
So this is the first time since the senators.
Yeah, that's crazy considering how much movement there's been in the other sports.
Yes.
You know, even in the NFL.
Well, but for Bud for Bud Seelik, it was very important to keep because Bud Seelike, being a Milwaukee
Braves fan went through the Braves going to Atlanta and then spent the next years of his life
working to get a baseball team back in Milwaukee, and he was ultimately successful with the Brewers.
And Bud was very, you know, adamant about keeping teams in their cities because of his personal experience.
You know, I know people will like to compare Baltimore and Washington to Oakland and San Francisco,
but I know they may be different, but there's only seven miles.
They're only seven miles apart from each other.
Yes.
Giants and the Bay Bridge.
They're not 35 miles.
That's true.
But personality-wise, they're totally different.
Yes.
Yeah, but market-wise, look, I'm not familiar with the market,
And I may be speaking out of school, okay.
But now, as a result, there's only Chicago and New York that have two teams, right?
And L.A., if you count the Angels.
So that's L.A., with the Angels, that's great.
L.A., Chicago, New York, correct.
Right.
And Baltimore, Washington, you can.
Nobody's ever counted that as the same market.
No, I know.
I know, except when it suits their purposes.
Remember, our buddy, transparent Ted Leoneses, likes to call it a super city.
Well, that super city stretches from Dover, Delaware all the way down to Richmond, Virginia.
I had no idea.
I had no idea.
All right.
That makes us supermen, because we live in the super city.
Yeah, well, we live in a super city with a lot of secret sauce.
I got this from Cletus Van Dam.
Cletus Van Dam gave us five stars on Apple and wrote.
First of all, he titled the review,
Smell Test Stinky.
Kevin, if your college picks represent the house,
then you must be fronting the worst casino on the strip.
Like the one in Vegas vacation where Clark and cousin
Eddie, the Griswolds, are down bad and playing guess a number between one and ten against the
dealer. I understand the game, and I'm doing this for entertainment purposes only, but I find I'm
only entertained when I win. These plays aren't even close. I actually agree with your
contrarian philosophy, but think your warm weather associates are steering you wrong. I suggest
we stick with neighbor Nick. I'll get to him in a moment. I suggest
we stick to the neighbor Nick approach and go with only the high profile games that are painfully
obvious public bait. Although to be fair, the Penn State and Auburn plays, which I liked. I had
them last week and they both lost fit this and still lost. The public isn't taking a meaningful
stand on UAB Navy or Baylor, BYU. They're not moving the needle. I feel like we're getting
too cute here, but yes, it's a marathon, not a sprint. Keep up the good work. I loved
I loved that.
This is somebody that I know bets,
and I know he understands what's going on here.
And I have taken, Tommy, I've got to tell you,
I've taken a bit of a pounding on social media for my college picks this year,
which have not been, I mean, I am dead 500 on the season,
but I'm very, very, very good right now in the NFL and not so good in college football.
And I've said, you know, this many times, just netting it out, over the years, basically, it's almost 50-50.
There's a slight edge to the NFL games in terms of my success over college games.
But so Cletus Van Dam.
Yeah, believe it or not, there is more, you're right, a game like UAB Navy doesn't have the same volume.
that, you know, Penn State, Illinois did.
Okay.
Baylor, BYU, it's very possible that the volume on that game equals, you know, one of the high-profile games.
But remember, it's a combination of public, overwhelming public action, and, yes, some of my
warm weather friends associates giving me kind of a nod on where the sharp money is.
Now, the neighbor Nick reference, okay, this is Tim Murray's nickname.
for our good friend Nick Aschew.
Nick is definitely representative of kind of the square better.
And so Tim and I sort of picked up on this years ago.
And, you know, he refers to it as, you know, I'm in the backyard and I go and there's
neighbor Nick and he leans over the fence and says, can you believe that Notre Dame's
not favored this weekend?
I'm betting them for all that I have.
And that's the neighbor Nick theory is once neighbor Nick weighs in on one side, you definitely have to go the opposite way.
But Cleetus Van Dam says stick with the neighbor Nick approach.
Yes, neighbor Nick probably focuses on only the high profile games.
But you never want to go with neighbor Nick on a regular basis.
That was funny.
Yeah, I'm going to tell you right now, I have no games tonight.
night, by the way. No smell test picks
tonight. I don't like the pro game. Atlanta
Tampa is a one and a half
two-point favorite. It's actually a huge game
in that division for this
early in the season. I don't like
any of the college games tonight, so I will
have a smell test tomorrow. I've already
looked at the board. I was really looking at it
early this morning. I don't think I'm going to
have that many games at all in college this
week, so this should excite
many of you that have
really gotten after me. There's not a lot
on the college board that makes a
lot of sense other than what Washington's favorite over Michigan. That doesn't make much sense.
So I'll probably have Washington. That's the University of Washington. By the way, I'll probably
have Cleveland in the smell test against the Washington of the East Coast, Washington, D.C., because
Washington's one of the most heavily bet teams on the board. So with that, I'm going to read this
to you. This came from Jenna. Jenna wrote, I've been listening to you with a
my husband for many years, but for the first time you've gotten carried away with blind optimism.
In the past, you would say it's only four games, it's too early.
Yesterday you said this, and then she put quotes around it.
There's a chance that after the Baltimore game, the mode will shift to win the Super Bowl now.
I need rational Kevin back.
And then she goes on to tell me that she's a lawyer, a trial lawyer, and she said, you don't bring a case or win a case without real evidence.
And the Cardinals and Giants games are not real evidence.
But anyway, this was Tommy yesterday, because you and I didn't talk about this on Tuesday.
This was the conversation about Devante Adams, you know, in his availability.
And I said, as much as Brandon.
Iyuk, you know, would have been somebody that I would have wanted.
You know, as long as Adam Peters was okay with it, he was the one that, you know, knew him.
But I loved Brandon Ayuk and still do love Brandon Ayuk as a player.
This is one I wouldn't do because I think it's a move you make when the guy's 32 years old.
It's a move you make because you are in win the Super Bowl this year mode.
And I said, that's not where Washington is right now.
They are definitely, we've moved from, hey, wouldn't it be great if we just go seven and ten and get the quarterback right to,
I think we can win the division and be in the playoffs.
But if they beat Cleveland and then go to Baltimore and beat the Ravens and they're five and one,
then it could shift to, hey, let's look around here for a moment.
we just beat one of the legitimate Super Bowl contenders on their home field.
Philly's not very good. Dallas isn't very good. We're now the favorites to win the division.
San Francisco is really banged up. Detroit's not as good as they were last year.
I mean, Minnesota's awesome with their defense, but it is still Sam Darnold, a quarterback,
although I love the way Sam Darnold's playing. Why not us?
And then, yeah.
Why not? I mean, because if you manage to beat the Ravens,
While Derek Henry has 350 yards rushing, that will be an accomplishment.
Yeah.
Well, that certainly wouldn't happen in beating them if he rushes for 350 yards.
But, you know, first of all, with respect to Jenna's note to me,
you're not wrong on the it's only been four games.
Okay, I get it.
I get it.
And it's like I said this Tommy on run radio this morning.
but it's like, you know, you got to give us some leeway to, you know, we did not have a chance to depose the witness.
Give us some leeway here. We haven't had any reason to be optimistic in about 20 years.
So this is without question the moment in 12 years.
2012 was this in terms of the excitement level.
I may have told you this the other day.
In the last week, I have gotten more long time first time, you know, calls.
Long time listener, first time caller.
The most in the last week, and by the way, the most that have been on hold that I couldn't even get to in the last week than I've had in several years, several years, probably since 2012.
So there is a shitload of increased excitement and optimism.
And yes, it's too early to be that way about the team right now.
I think it's not crazy to be super optimistic about the quarterback.
But the team, because the defense isn't very good, is TBD.
You know, this 3-1 could turn to 3-3-3-2 weeks,
and there'd be a completely different feeling.
It could, you know, it's not 8-2.
you know, at 10 games through. It's 3-1. So I do get that, but allow us a little bit of
room to breathe for the first time in 12 years. Tommy, this is, I was thinking about this.
This is no different than 12 years ago. It's the exact same reaction.
Yeah, except, like you pointed out, at one point, that team was 3 and 6.
I know, but four games in, you had the New Orleans game, you had a game, you had a game
that they barely lost to the Rams.
Then he got hurt a little bit in that Cincinnati game
that they lost 38, 31,
and then he let him down the field and beat Tampa
on a field goal 24 to 22.
They were 2 and 2,
and this town was on fire.
On fire.
I don't think there's anything different at all.
I think the reaction 12 years ago was exact,
hell, the Minnesota, no, the Minnesota game
after week six when he ran 70,
yards or whatever it was, electrifying, as Larry Michael called it, for the touchdown.
And they won that game. That got him to three and three. Oh, come on. This was,
we have the next guy. We have a future MVP. We finally got it right. And we're about to take off.
Because, oh, by the way, we've got outstanding coaches that have figured out this whole new way to play football at the pro level.
Yeah, yeah, no, you're right.
You're right.
I don't know.
I'm going to take your word for it.
I don't recall the atmosphere being quite the same.
Oh, Tom.
We were doing a show together.
RG3's jersey was the number one selling jersey as Jaden's is right now.
you know, tickets, the games were sold out and they were all our fans.
People were absolutely thinking, look out.
Now, you're right.
They lost the next three games after they beat Minnesota, and they were three and six
at the buy.
And that put us into a bit of a downer in the moment.
And then they, you know, won the last seven games.
And then we found out a lot more about the quarterback's personality, too, along the way.
And that changed everything.
everything. But I don't think anybody that would say, be careful, you were in the exact same place
12 years ago. You didn't feel any less optimistically than, than you did today. That would be
correct. But no Dan, no Dan. No, that's not what I'm going to say. Since that time, okay,
there has been 12 more years or 11 or 10 more years of damage.
Okay. So in other words, to gather up this level of excitement after you had this brief respite
and then you start and then you were beat down again and you've been beaten again for a decade
and then to gather it up once again to this kind of fever pitch I think makes this bigger.
I understand what you're saying, but in terms of the numbers of the numbers of
people excited? No. 2012 actually was more because the fan base had not eroded to the level that it
had, you know, in recent years. So you still had, remember, you know, 2010, Shanahan, the first year,
Shanahan was not, they ended up being six and ten, but the beginning of that year, people were
fired up. 2011, not so much. And then all of a sudden you had 2012, but you were still,
You know, people got it that this owner was bad and that things were bad,
but it was really, it took 15.
I think, I don't know, I think the Shanahan debacle at the end was really the moment that the acceleration of the fan base departing really kicked into high gear,
where it really started to accelerate.
And then when they completely botched the cousins thing, it really was like over.
And then, you know, they had that start in 2018 and Alex Smith breaks his leg and it's like,
we're cursed.
And then 2020 comes and it's just a complete S show from that moment forward.
2012, the numbers were bigger, netting it out.
But I do understand what you're saying.
It's been a lot longer since there's been, you know, any.
sense of legitimate optimism.
It's a rise from
carrying that burden for
another 10 years
to a level of thinking
anything's possible.
And I think that's
basically the theme right now
for this season. As of now
and that's what I wrote about
and I think it's the theme for
the commanders, anything is possible
right now. Okay, Kevin
Garnett.
Speaking of
And it's all because of the quarterback, and I want to talk about the quarterback.
More?
Yes.
Okay, let's do that right after these words from a few of our sponsors.
Hey, guys, I have found a product that I want to tell you about that works if you've got congestion.
I have congestion primarily due to allergies in the springtime and then in the summer and fall.
It can be all consuming that kind of congestion, hard to focus, hard to think, snoring, issues sleeping.
But Navaj nasal care has been a game changer for clearing my congestion quickly.
Navaj makes breathing easy, easier.
I found the solution.
You've got to try this.
Navage uses smooth saline flow and gentle patented nasal suction to clear nasal passages.
I just hold up my Navaj naivage navel.

This segment of the show is brought to you by Window Nation. October is the best time to buy new windows.
And that's because winter is right around the corner. So if you can get your new windows in
to replace those old windows, you're going to save big on your heating bills during the winter.
Your old inefficient windows are costing you hundreds of dollars a year in heating bills, air conditioning bills.
I want you to test drive your windows right now.
What does that mean?
Open each one.
Do they open correctly?
Do they stay open?
Are they hard to open?
Do you see condensation or leaks?
Are the windows moldy?
If you find out through this process that you got older windows, understand that much of that cold air
in this summertime, and much of that warm air in the wintertime, is escaping your home,
and it's costing you a lot more to cool your house and heat your house.

So you want to talk more about the quarterback.
Go ahead.
I can't talk enough about him.
Okay.
He was just named, what, NFL offensive rookie of the month?
Correct.
That's hardly a shock.
He's going to have to get a much bigger trophy room before he's all said and done.
He's going to have to get a rookie of the week three times.
NFC offensive player of the week, FedEx Player of the Week.
You want a few other sponsored awards, at least five of them, all together.
Okay?
And this is his response when he talked, when he met with the media, okay?
The question was put to him about people calling him a star rookie and how he feels about his success.
He said, man, you all can say whatever you want.
I'm still a rookie in my eyes.
So I let everybody else do the talking for me.
I don't get caught up in that stuff.
But man, it's just a blessing, just a preparation.
Obviously the team believing in me
and going out there and competing every Sunday.
In his press conference this week,
there were several instances where the questions were there
saying, everybody adores you.
aren't you basking in the glow of this adoration?
And he waved them off.
Everyone didn't miss a beat.
This was better than RG3 holding up the press conference outside until the airplane flew over.
Yeah, I was just going to say, you've been infatuated once before.
You know, you were head over heels.
He was given every opportunity to accept the flowers that were being tossed his way,
and he came up with the right answer every time.
Every time and didn't miss a beat.
I watched his press conference.
I have now for the last couple of weeks.
It's really hard.
If you are a person that I think, you know, at least has a clue in terms of recognizing
humility and self-awareness, it's really hard not, and you like those traits in people.
it's really hard not to be, you know, not head over heels, you know, not, you know, enchanted as Tom is with, with, with Jaden.
But yes, very, very impressed with him.
And, you know, I'm sure a lot of the same things were being said about RG3 to compare it to 2012 again, including probably from people in the building.
But I still go back to what Dan Quinn did his best to explain over the summer because I really loved what he was trying to get at.
And I think he got at it pretty well.
When he was asked about, you know, Jaden and leadership, and he said, look, this is really hard when you are young and you come into a locker room with older people.
and you were the big draft choice and you're playing this position.
It is really hard to hit that inside straight between inspiring confidence because you're good
and everybody sees that you're good and they're confident that you're in you
because you're also confident in yourself without being off-puttingly arrogant.
and, you know, it's hard to inspire a lot of confidence, and at the same time, be, have the humility
and not have all the answers.
And he said, this kid for whatever reason just has hit that with everybody.
Everybody is totally confident in him and his abilities, and he, you know, he exhibits that,
and at the same time, there's nobody that would say he's full of himself.
So it's hard for people to do.
It's really hard for people like you to do,
but it's really hard for people to pull off.
And it seems like so far he's pulling it off.
But you know what, Tommy, like we've said all along,
they're three and one.
Or like we said over the summer,
they haven't played a game yet.
Well, they haven't hit that streak of a pick in two fumbles.
They lose the next game.
He throws another pick,
doesn't look that good they lose
because
God, we are so reactionary
fans are, especially
on social media.
But I love his demeanor.
Love it. Everything about it.
Absolutely.
Bill Barnwell, ESPN.com,
did his quarter poll
awards
today.
He's got Dan Quinn
third in the coach of the year.
discussion. Kevin O'Connell in Minnesota's 1 and Todd Bowles in Tampa's 2, Quinn's 3.
But then when we get to the MVP of the league, he's got three candidates coming in at number
three is Lamar Jackson. He's had a pretty good season so far. Josh Allen is number two.
And number one is Jaden Daniels.
Right now, Bill Barnwell,
thinks that if you were to vote for it today, that Jaden Daniels should be the MVP of the league.
Through four games, they're going to go ahead and play the other 13 anyway.
Okay?
We understand that.
And I've talked about, you know, the odds on this, and I'll get to him in a moment,
but that's amazing.
I mean...
It's amazing, but you can understand it because no one believes this team is.
is having the success, even closer to the success it's having, without him.
Of course not.
You know, it's so obvious.
It's so obvious because of the historic numbers he's putting up.
He's too good to ignore at this point, to ignore the impact of what he's accomplishing.
There's no room for debate in that sense, you know,
What would they be doing with another quarterback?
Because no other quarterback has done what he's done so far as a rookie.
My bookie right now has Mahomes, Allen, Darnold, Stroud, Jackson, Purdy, Goff ahead of Jaden Daniels, odds-wise.
Jaden Daniels then is really close with Burrow and Prescott, Rogers Mayfield.
I mentioned this on the show yesterday, too.
My bookie's updated division odds.
Washington now is tied with Dallas at plus 240 to win the NFC East behind the Eagles of plus 110.
I mean, for this to be the case, even after four games with a rookie quarterback,
especially when you're considering the first four games, no rookie quarterback has ever had a start like this.
You probably have to go back to RJ3.
Yeah.
It's exciting.
I'm glad.
I'm so,
my anticipation to watch him each week is off the charts.
Now, here's a question for you, okay?
You just said it's because of him,
and I would certainly give him the majority of the pie.
So let's do the pie chart of,
credit here to the offense so far this year.
Because you can slice it up any way you want.
I would slice it up as 75% Jaden Daniels,
20% Cliff Kingsbury, 5% get ready, offensive line.
Actually, let me amend that.
I'm going to go, Jaden at 70%, 20% Kingsbury, 10% offensive line.
Well, that's interesting.
I have to admit, the offensive line is better than I thought it would be.
But if it were made, I go 70, 30, and just put the entire coaching staff into the 30% category.
Okay, I like that.
You don't want to separate clip out?
No, no, I want to give Dan Quinn his due as the head coach for that.
And, you know, there's Anthony Lynn and the rest of the staff.
I think it's turned out to be so far a better staff than I think what I would.
I didn't know what to expect out of it because it was all new.
Okay.
And they seem to have gelled together very well.
Do you remember when I told you over the summer that there was this quote from Dan Quinn about,
you know, he said, our perceived weaknesses maybe aren't, from the outside,
aren't necessarily what maybe we think they are inside the building.
And I said that day, I said he is talking about the offensive line.
and they think they're going to be just fine on the offensive line.
And, you know, I remember having this conversation with maybe John and Ben,
John Kime and Ben Standing, and I remember, I think, I forget what their reactions were.
They're like, yeah, I didn't really read it that way.
I'm like, well, what is the number one perceived outside opinion of what their biggest weakness is?
It's the O line.
It has been now, you know, going back to last season.
And he's been right. Listen to these next-gen win rate numbers. I mentioned this earlier this week,
and I actually mentioned it as I was looking at it, not knowing what the numbers were,
but I thought that the run-block win-rate number was going to be high. Well, they're the number one
offensive line in the league right now in run-block win rate. Remember, run-block win rate is not necessarily contingent,
at all on the quarterback getting the ball out of his hands quickly or the offensive coordinator
calling plays to get the ball out of their hands quickly. These are running plays. Now, it helps
when your quarterback's part of the run game. Don't get me wrong. But they assess the actual
blocking of the five offensive line men. Number one, pass block win rate, number eight in the league.
So yeah, the advanced numbers have picked up on how good the offensive line has been.
And, you know, this was something that we talked.
Well, I didn't see that coming.
You raised the possibility that that may be the case.
I dismissed it.
Well, the only reason was is I know last year the numbers, you know,
the advanced numbers weren't that terrible.
and they had a terrible offensive coordinator and a quarterback that just could not function in that offensive coordinator's offense as a drop-back passer.
I mean, everything about last year in terms of their attack was just ass backwards.
And you get a better coordinator with a better quarterback or a lot better quarterback.
And it's amazing how much better offensive lines look.
But look, here's the other thing.
They're running the football.
They are running the football.
They are effective running the football.
They're the number three rush offense in the NFL.
And, you know, a guy like Andrew Wiley, a guy like Cosmi, Allegretti, Biotic, these are good, these are big physical, you know, they like run blocking.
In fact, I think Wiley is ninth in the league in run block win rate, all right?
And then they don't have anybody in the top 10 in terms of their interior lineman in run block win rate.
But it's a good offensive line.
So mine would be 70% Jaden, 20% Kingsbury, 10% O line.
But I like what you did with giving the coaching staff a lot of the credit.
You know, you were talking about what Jaden said yesterday when he was asked about, you know, how he's dealing with all of the attention.
He was also asked, and so was Dan Quinn yesterday, about the process of building the offense with Kingsbury.
And Quinn gave Kingsbury a lot of credit for basically saying to Jaden, in essence, what do you want to do?
And Jaden backed that up.
Jaden said that Cliff was very open-minded and basically created a system that he had a lot of input into.
To me, that's good.
To me, that's always good coaching.
You don't force your system on the players.
You look at the players, you figure out what they do well, and you design the system around what they do well.
And anyway, my bookie.ag, by the way, to see those odds and to bet on Washington plus 240 or to bet on Jaden Daniels to win the MVP, he's a prohibitive favorite now to win rookie of the year.
Offensive rookie of the year, he's minus 141 at MyBooky.

I am looking forward to seeing what Kingsbury and Witt, its coordinator day today, what they say,
and I'll probably have some of that on the show tomorrow.
If there's something remarkable about what they say,
but I'm actually most interested in Joe Witt, Jr.
I'm wondering if he's feeling himself a little bit after their first competent football game.
Yes.
Yeah.
He should be.
Yeah.
All right, let's get to your prediction.
And there is also another story that we want to get to,
and that is Christine Brennan, who we both know and have respected for many years.
She's taking some heat in her coverage of the WNBA.
We'll get to that and more right after these words from a few of our sponsors.

All right, Tommy, tell us about Shelly's.
Well, you know, I usually like at least once a week to let people know about the great
specials this week on the Shelley's backroom menu.
Shelly's back room in case you've been, you know, under a rock and haven't been listening
to the podcast.
And I can't fathom anyone who wouldn't want to listen to the Kevin Sheean show podcast.
But in case you haven't, Shelley's Backroom is not just a cigar bar.
It's a quality food location, great restaurant, great food, great menu.
You can check out their menu at shelley's backroom.com.
This week, one of the specials is a Mexican taco salad with chicken,
not necessarily something I would go for because I have a very limited palate.
Okay.
That sounds good to me.
Okay, chopped greens tossed in taco-flavored dressing, top with seasoned chicken, shredded cheese,
cucumber, black olives, and tomatoes on a fresh hot tortilla chips.
You like that?
Yeah, that sounds excellent, actually.
Sign me up.
Are you teaching tonight?
You want to meet me down at Shelley's afterwards?
Watch the game?
Actually, I'm teaching via Zoom today.
I'm not making the trip down.
All right.
But I'll be going down next Thursday night.
Okay.
We'll talk about that one then.
Yes.
I mean, there's other specials to Mac Burger, you know, with that great Shelly's custom blend of beef.
The Athens Pita.
Again, are you a Pita guy?
You have much more of an open palate than I do.
I don't think Pita is actually like an expansion of Pallet.
So let's, you know.
Do I eat PETA every once in a while?
Sure.
Is it my favorite?
No.
Not necessarily, but I wouldn't call that, you know, a sophisticated palette item.
These are just a special to show.
These are just a special to show.
They're menu.
It's got great variety with great burgers.
I mean, really top-level burgers.
Okay.
And, you know, while you're eating, you can have top-shelf whiskey, top-shelf liquor,
a great selection of draft beers.
I usually prefer the Sierra Nevada as my preference,
but they have a great selection there when you go.
And you can find out more at shelley's backroom.com.
They're located at 1331 F Street Northwest in the district.
All right.
Let's get to Tommy's pick for Sunday.
Are you going?
Yes, I'll be there.
God, you do go to games.
I'll give you credit.
You go to some games.
I guarantee you you're going to the Baltimore game.
Oh, yeah.
I'll be at the Baltimore game.
Yeah.
All right.
Absolutely.
Who do you like on Sunday with a footnote?
Well, I can't help myself, Kevin.
I'm caught up in Jane Daniels' fever.
I like Washington to win 33 to 20 over the Browns.
33 to 20 over Cleveland.
God, I mean, another...
I like the Washington defense to get three turnovers,
three turnovers on the Browns,
two of which will lead to some kind of score,
and Washington will win 33 to 20.
33 to 20.
Does it matter to you if Brian Robinson,
Junior doesn't play because he did not practice for the second straight day, had a banged up
knee and did not practice today.
Yeah, that would matter to me.
But you know what?
I mean, fool me once. Shame on you.
Fool me twice. Shame on me.
Last week I thought they were in trouble because Austin Eckler didn't play.
Yeah.
You know?
And that's not the case.
And he looked like he'll be ready to play.
Yeah, I'm having a difficult time with this one right now.
now because my contrarian betting philosophy, and I've been pretty hot on my NFL games,
which probably means it's about to turn the other way, says Cleveland 100% is the right side
on Sunday. But that doesn't mean Washington can't win the game by one or two. They're giving
three or even push at three. I think this is really good.
to be the first legitimate defensive test, although last week Cleveland got run on a little bit.
They're not as good as everyone thought they would be defensively.
No, but part of that is they just can't score offensively, so they're out there a lot.
You know, Miles Garrett's been playing injured. I mean, he still had two sacks playing injured,
which is nuts. Yeah, I don't know.
I'll have my, you know, keys to a win and a prediction on tomorrow's show.
But 33 to 20, Tommy has.
All right.
So I wanted to talk to you about this Christine Brennan story.
I know you're familiar with it.
For those that are not familiar with it, Christine Brennan, longtime columnist,
groundbreaking, you know, reporter in columnist.
first female reporter ever to cover an NFL team and have access to a locker room.
I'm correct about that, right, Tommy?
Yes.
Yeah.
I had Christine on the show right the day after they named the Olympic team, the women's
Olympic team, and she wrote just a scathing column about how it was one of the dumbest
things she's ever seen in Olympic history, that they did not include Caitlin Clark on the team.
I totally agreed with that.
The whole season in the WNBA and the pettiness and the jealousy and the Olympic team leaving her off of it,
I just can't wrap my arms around the short-sightedness and the pettiness and just the simpletonness of all of it.
I mean, how much revenue did they miss out Olympic-wise by not having her jersey available to sell?
But anyway, Christine Brennan's, you know, Bonafeeds, Bonafides, you know, are out there when it comes to especially, you know, covering and elevating women's sports.
And she got into a back, not a back and forth, that's the wrong way to put it.
She questioned a player by the name of DeJohnny Carrington, who played.
for Connecticut, and they were playing the Indiana fever, and Caitlin Clark got poked in the eye during the
game by DeJohnny Carrington. It was during one of those playoff games. Now, Connecticut swept Indiana
in the first round in two games. I would assume since Indiana got eliminated, half the number of people
are probably watching the WNBA playoffs now. But Christine Brennan asked Carrington after that game.
game, quote, when you went and kind of swatted at Caitlin, did you intend to hit her in the eye? And if so,
could you just, you know, or if not, either way, could you just talk about what happened on that play?
I watched this question asked. It was not antagonistic. It wasn't confrontational. It was a very
matter of fact question that you'd ask anybody after any men's
sporting event if something like that happened. And Carrington's answer was, quote, I don't even know why I would
intend to hit anybody in the eye. That doesn't even make sense to me. No, I didn't. I didn't even know I hit her.
I was trying to make a play on the ball and I guess I followed through and hit her. Obviously, it's never
intentional. That's not even the type of player that I am. And then Christine Brennan followed up by asking
if Carrington and one of her teammates later laughed about Clark getting hit in the eye because there was a shot
them laughing, I guess, on the sideline. And Carrington said, no, quote, I just told you that I didn't even
know that I hit her, closed quote. Christine Brennan had her credentials for covering the WNBA
taken away from her for this exchange. So I'll let you comment first because you know Christine well,
I know her a little bit.
You're a long-time columnist and reporter.
I know that Christine is writing a book about Caitlin Clark right now.
That should be mentioned.
But she's been criticized by a lot of people in the WNBA,
a lot of female athletes across the board.
You say what?
The WNBA has been an embarrassment media-wise
in the way they've handled the media.
I mean, they have been the ultimate,
it, you know, bite your nose off to spite your face or spite your nose off to bite your face
or however.
Or bite your nose off to spite your face, yes.
Okay.
I mean, this is a league that where the players, you know, and people who are activists
in women's sports have talked about and demanded more attention.
And then when they get more attention, they resent it.
I mean, there have been issues last year.
the losing team in the WNBA final, I think it was to Liberty,
they closed their locker room after the game,
and their players refused to talk to reporters.
And that's the second year in a row.
Really?
That's happened.
That's absurd.
In the WNBA championship game.
Oh, my God.
You've got to be kidding me.
That didn't happen.
No.
That did not happen.
No.
And there have been other instances of them closing the lockerers.
You're being serious.
After a championship game, they closed their locker room and would not let the media in.
Yes, and the players would not come out and talk to reporters.
I mean, this is something that we've never seen before.
And there have been other instances of then closing locker rooms here and there,
you know, not talking to reporters and stuff.
And so this is just a culmination of that.
I mean, it really, it's so ridiculous.
I mean, they look petty.
They look unprofessional.
They look amateurish.
And, you know, I mean, here's the thing.
the thing. You know, somebody in the NBA
who's paying for this
league should step in and
say, you know, if you want us to
keep paying for your league,
you better start acting more professional when it
comes to the media. 100%. That was
number one on my points
that I was going to make, is that
the grownups
have to step in and tell the
children, sorry, but
you're going to do it this way or you're going to
be punished. And the punishment would
be, we're not going to fund your
league the way we've been funding your league for 27 years. Or that big slug of TV money that we gave
you because Caitlin Clark's in the league this year and the ratings skyrocketed, we're going to cut
that back. It's such, you know, media, public relations, 101, 101 stuff. Like, it's just
stupid. And you're right. That's what they're doing. They're cutting off their nose despite their
face. And they can't, you can't, when you've lost money for 27 years and had, you know,
the NBA fund, you know, it's something like $270 million over that period to keep you
afloat so that you actually can do this fun thing. Because it's been essentially a fun thing to do
because you're not making any money and haven't made any money for years. You've lost money for
27 years. This has been for grins and giggles, and they've allowed you to do that by funding it.
Grow up. Now, I have one other point I want to make.
Okay, go ahead. I had another point I wanted to make. You finish that. You finish.
Okay. It should be pointed out that Christine Brennan is not doing a book with Caitlin Clark.
she's doing a book about Caitlin Clark.
This is not some kind of authorized biography where it's the athlete working with the reporter to do the book.
She's writing a book about Kate and Clark and the impact it's had on women's sports.
Yeah.
Okay, so, I mean, I don't know if Caitlin Clark will talk to Christine Brenner or not.
She probably will at some point, but this is not a cooperative effort.
Okay, that's important to note, you know, because Christiard.
Christine Brennan has been crucified by so many critics who have said, well, she's in bed with,
Christine, you know, with Caitlin Park.
She's not going to, you know, bite that.
She's not working with this player.
She's writing about this player.
I mean, I've done the same thing to a much lesser extent.
And a lot of reporters have done the same thing that Christine Brennan is doing over the years.
This is not an uncommon or current.
Yeah.
That's it.
So the only thing I was going to say about the exchange between Christine Brennan and this player,
DeJohnny Carrington, is that the follow-up question about the laughing,
I'm just wondering if you would have asked that question after the player was somewhat demonstrative
in saying, I didn't even know that I swatted her in the eye.
I had no idea it's not the kind of player that I am.
I, you know, I'm not saying, look, I watched it.
There was no confrontational tone.
There was no antagonistic tone.
But I just, the first answer and then the second question about, you know,
were you guys laughing about her getting hit in the eye?
Well, she just told you that she didn't even know that she hit her in the eye.
Now, that doesn't mean that the players couldn't have been laughing about it anyway after the fact
when she realized that she had done it after the fact.
But I don't know.
Would you have asked that question?
I don't know if I would have asked that question.
And I like to think I would have because that was the second question
was probably the motivation for asking the first question.
Right.
You know?
Yes.
I mean, so I would think that it's a legitimate question because there was some kind of emotional reaction after the incident happened.
Okay.
If they're connected, you have to believe what she says to believe they're not connected.
But there was some pleasure taken at some point by the WNBA players about something that happened on the court.
Yeah, no, that makes sense to me. I understand. Maybe instead of asking, I'm not going to tell Christine Brendan how to do her job. But rather than the follow-up question, you know, being specific to the swatting of the eye and Caitlin's eye being hit, maybe it's just what were you guys laughing at?
Maybe.
Maybe.
I mean, you can second, look.
The funny thing about Christine Brennan, who I love and respect tremendously, is that when I covered
my first Winter Olympics in Nagano in 1998 and covered figure skating and went to the, you know,
the workouts, okay, figure skating.
I'd never watched figure skating in my life.
And probably most of the report, a lot of reporters there didn't.
So basically what you did was you stood in a scrum as the skaters came off the ice,
and you wrote down the answers to every question, Christine Brennan.
Yeah.
That's how you covered figure skating.
At least I did.
Wow.
Yeah, I mean, it's really ironic, right, that, you know, this pioneer in many ways who has done
so much through her job to build up, to propagate women's sports would be, would be, would
the reaction to her would be this way.
And really like with anything else, tone, to me, tone matters.
You got to watch it.
There's nothing at all that would speak to, you know, this was antagonistic.
This was leading the witness.
This was any of that stuff.
I didn't think it was in watching it.
I think the follow-up question was one of those where, you know,
she's pushing to get to why they were laughing.
But, yeah.
All right.
I have not checked out the ratings for what those playoff games look like
without Caitlin Clark in it.
The ratings were outrageous with her in it.
In that first game, which was played on an NFL Sunday,
the uh here actually here's the here's some of the data um the that game one in the middle of an
NFL Sunday at 3 p.m on ABC it drew 1.84 million viewers the game won between
Connecticut and Indiana which was the most viewers ever for a postseason game since the
WNBA title game like 20 some years ago um but it looks like here's the headline uh
WNBA playoff ratings plummet after Caitlin Clark goes home.
Yeah, I mean, of course they were going to.
Yes, hold on.
Let's just see this.
The first game between the Aces and Liberty,
I think that's Las Vegas in New York,
a rematch of last year's WNBA finals
between two of the league's most popular and successful teams,
drew an audience of 929,000, 50%
less than the Indiana Fever game won against Connecticut.
Yeah.
There's a lot of resentment over that by the people who have or getting the money in
their pockets of all things.
Yeah, but here's something that's also interesting, okay?
The audience was half the size of the audience with Caitlin Clark, 929,000.
But still, it was very good for a WNBA playoff.
game. And that is the elevation of the league by Caitlin Clark. Okay. These teams, the, okay, so
929,000, it's 50% off her numbers in a first round series. We all, I mean, if you've been
paying attention at all, you knew that the ratings would plummet without her in it. But they're
still higher than typical, which is, you know, rising tide lifts all boats situation.
even with her not around the game.
She's done a lot for the game, a hell of a lot for the game.
I mean, I never watched a WNBA game start to finish.
Never.
Not one.
All right. Anything else?
I got nothing else for you today, boss.
I just want to mention real quickly, if you didn't listen to yesterday's show,
first of all, Gus Ferat was on it.
Gus is a really good guest.
I've had him on before.
He was great on Jaden Daniels, but with Gus, we talked about some other things, too, from his past time here.
But I also had on the show yesterday, Taylor Kelly.
Taylor is Jaden Daniels personal coach through this 3D QB1 training academy in Southern California.
And Taylor works with John Beck, but we had Beck on the show.
But Taylor is the guy that is communicating with J.D.'
Daniels during the season.
So he watched the game on Sunday against Arizona, and then he provides Jaden with notes.
And he went through a lot of those notes on the show yesterday.
So I thought it was really interesting stuff.
It starts right around the 25-minute mark of yesterday's show.
I'll give you the exact timestamp here.
Hold on.
Give me a second.
The 25-15 mark on yesterday's show.
And it's about a-
pretty cool. It's about a 20-minute listen. I think it's worth it if you haven't listened to it.
He's a former college quarterback, but he goes through a lot of the plays that we actually went
through earlier in the week, but this is the expert going through these plays and telling you
what he told Jaden about those plays. So I thought it was really, really good.
All right, I'll be back tomorrow. Tommy, I'll talk to you on Tuesday.
Okay, boss.
Dijane?
Yeah.
Did you, when you went and kind of swatted at Caitlin,
did you intend to hit her in the eye?
And if so, could you just, or if not, either way,
could you talk about what happened on that play?
I just, I don't even know why I would intend to hit anybody in the eye.
That doesn't even make sense to me.
But, no, I didn't.
I didn't know I hit her, actually.
I was trying to make a play on the ball,
and I guess I followed through and I hit her.
So obviously, it's never.
intentional, that's not even like the type of player that I am.
So yeah.
