You don't want it, you don't need it, but you're going to get it anyway.
The Kevin Sheehan Show, here's Kevin.
Johnson, the fake, he'll run, he'll want to throw, he's going to get a touchdown.
The commanders have taken the lead.
One-yard touchdown run by 39-year-old quarterback Josh Johnson.
Josh Johnson's touchdown run with just over six minutes to go.
gave Washington a seven-point lead, a lead that held up. They beat the Eagles in their season finale, 24 to 17, ensuring that when April's draft rolls around, they'll have the seventh overall pick in the first round, rather than the fifth pick in the first round. The pick they would have had had they lost to the Eagles. The show's presenting sponsor is always, Window Nation. If you need new windows, I highly recommend Windonation. Call them at 866.

So this miserable season is finally over.
And the final tally, 5 and 12, not too good, as the old ball coach might say.
He actually said 5 and 11, not too good because they only played 16 regular season games back in 2003.
That was the last time we heard from Spurrier following that season.
he was gone a few days later, replaced about a week after that by Joe Gibbs.
And what was, without question, an all-time, off-season moment, like stunning moment.
The shock of Joe Gibbs coming back, January 7, 2004, 22 years ago, nearly to the day, was an all-timer.
That was a long time ago, though, now seems like a lifetime ago.
Quinn, unlike Spurrier, is not going anywhere, nor should he, in my opinion.
I personally think that that is the reasonable perspective, the sane perspective.
Of course I do.
But for, I don't know, the 50th time over the last month, month and a half, two months,
I'll say it again, you can't fire a coach.
A year after he nearly took your team to the Super Bowl and then had a bad
season that can mostly be chocked up by something he had no control over.
You know, during the broadcast yesterday, Kevin Harlan and Ross Tucker were on the call for
CBS.
Ross Tucker mentioned the actual number that I've actually been looking for.
You know, I've done some back of the envelope injury counting.
But the actual number that is, I think, most important is the number that he gave during
the broadcast.
And that number is that 83 week-one starter games have been lost.
The most in the NFL, 83-week-one starters, the games associated with those players were lost.
That is, to me, the major point of the injury conversation this year,
because not all injury conversations are the same.
But the point that I've been trying to make all season long, it's not the total number of injuries that matters as much as who suffered the injuries.
And that number that Ross Tucker gave, week one starter games lost, is the most important part of the injury conversation as it relates to this team and this year.
Their best players were the ones that got hurt and missed all of those games.
And that to me is more than any other reason why the team went five and 12 and why Dan Quinn isn't going anywhere, nor should go anywhere.
Nor is Adam Peters, the general manager going anywhere, nor should he go anywhere, in my opinion.
You know, both of whom, by the way, held just a little while ago out in Ashburn, their season-ending press conference.
I've got some sound from that press conference, including a soundbite that I'm going to play here.
in the opening segment of the show.
But I'll play some of the other sound from it
because it's the first time we've heard from Adam Peters
since the beginning of the season.
So there was a lot of Adam Peters in this presser.
I'll play some of that for you.
I will do a quick game take from the win yesterday over the Eagles.
I'm going to finish what I started.
I mean, technically it was a regular season game.
And I do game takes for preseason games.
So I'm definitely going to do one more to finish up the season.
But I will say this.
While I love doing the game recaps on this podcast and on the radio show for our team,
seasons like this one make doing them less fun at the end of the year.
I mean, a lot less.
But there were some good individual performances from the game yesterday.
I'll get to that on the show.
And I will certainly touch on the meaningful.
full games that were played this weekend. The two on Saturday, the one early in the 1 p.m.
window, and then last night's game between the Steelers and the Ravens. What a spectacular
game to end the regular season. So I will get to that probably at the very end of the show.
But I'm going to start with the Cliff Kingsbury News from over the weekend. I am sure that most of you know
at this point what I'm referring to. But if you don't, Diana Rusini from the Athletic on Saturday
reported the following. Quote, Washington has had conversations about potentially moving on from
Cliff Kingsbury, even if he doesn't get a head coaching job. Some in the buildings say there's
been a disconnect between Kingsbury and General Manager Adam Peters. Diana continues,
When was the last time we were watching to see if an offensive coordinator was going to get fired while he was also preparing for head coaching interviews?
We'll see how this shakes out.
The commanders likely won't make any final decisions until they see how the broader coaching market develops.
Closed quote.
Yeah, the broader coaching market developing and there being a solution to moving on from Cliff Kingsbury, I would think would be rather important.
You're not just going to move on from a coordinator like Cliff Kingsbury, who's pretty good unless you have something that's better.
Now, Kevin Stefansky is available.
He was fired by the Browns, but Kevin Stefansky is considered to be still, I believe, a head coaching candidate by many around the league.
And the Giants opening may be something that he ends up landing.
We'll see.
So that was Diana's reporting from over the weekend in The Athletic.
Ben Standing had his own reporting.
He had a high-ranking front office source with another organization, text him, Ben, that Kingsbury might not return regardless of whether he lands another job first.
Ben also had a source familiar with Washington's internal dynamics, described the Kingsbury situation.
situation is, quote, intriguing theater, closed quote.
Ben also came on radio with me today and said that he thinks it's 60, 40, 60% that Kingsbury's
not back as the offensive coordinator, 40% chance that he is.
So look, there's been some conversation about Cliff Kingsbury, including on this show,
about whether or not they would be, you know, upset.
if Kingsbury got a head coaching job and they had to go out and find a replacement offensive
coordinator. But there's not been any conversation about Kingsbury being fired. Certainly no
reporting until over the weekend from Diana. And then with Ben's information from, you know,
another organization high-ranking front office source that he might not return regardless of
whether he lands another job first. The only thing,
I can tell you based on reaching out to various people is that the person that seemed to have
any sort of an opinion on this said that he thinks that the reporting about a rift or a disconnect
between Kingsbury and Adam Peters is a bit exaggerated and that that probably isn't the nature
of the relationship.
Like there's not a confrontational tone to the relationship.
between Peters and Kingsbury.
Now, the press conference just a little while ago
included a couple of questions that I want to play for you here
as they relate to this situation.
The first was asked by Nikki Javala about the job
that Cliff Kingsbury did this year.
She asked it to Dan Quinn.
Here's what he said.
How would you assist the work that Cliff did with the offense?
Yeah, we're going through all of the coaches.
Cliff, offensively, defensively, on the teams wide.
And so that's really what we're digging into, Nicky, to find what's best, how do we do it,
you know, where do we find spaces to improve, and, you know, for Cliff, for Joe, for Larry,
for all of us, like, that's our main focus, like, so we're never in this space again.
And that's what we want to dig in hard on.
So before I give you my reaction to what Dan Quinn just said or didn't say,
let me just mention to you that at the beginning of the press conference,
before anybody asked a question, Dan Quinn said,
I know you're going to want to ask me about changes that might be made.
We're not going there today.
We're not ready to go there today.
We're still, you know, examining everything, discussing everything,
and we're not going to, you know, be able to answer any questions about, you know,
changes to coaching staff or anything else.
But that's not what Nikki asked.
Nicky didn't ask Dan Quinn about whether or not Cliff Kingsbury would be back.
She asked him about the job he did this year, and he basically didn't answer the question.
And to me, you know, it could have very easily been an answer if Cliff Kingsbury were definitely coming back.
Cliff did a really good job considering the circumstances this year of, you know, the revolving door at quarterback,
not having Jaden Daniels, but for three games, completely.
healthy start to finish.
And he could have said, you know, based on what was presented and what they went through
injury-wise, Cliff did a pretty good job and did a nice job with Josh Johnson over the
final two games.
But that's not what he said.
He didn't give Cliff any sort of ringing endorsement about the job he did.
He lumped him into Joe Witt, Jr., and even Larry Izzo, saying that, you know, we
are looking at everything. We're digging in to find what's best, how we do it.
You know, where do we find spaces to improve for Cliff, for Joe Witt, for Larry?
That's our main focus. So we're never in this space again. And that's what we're really
digging in hard on. I think it's definitely a window into the reporting from over the weekend
that Cliff isn't safe. And then J.P. Finley asked a little bit later on,
A question to Adam Peters about his role in coaching changes.
Here's what Adam Peters said.
You guys talk about your comprehensive approach a lot.
Adam, I'm curious, what's your role in the coaching staff decisions?
I'm really just here to support DQ.
The coaching staff is DQ's, and I'm always here to help during the season and off season, however I can,
to help support him and help him make the decisions that he needs to make.
and certainly
really wherever he needs.
So it's not, you know,
I'm not involved in whatever decision it is.
It's always the EQ's call
and I have his back on whatever he wants to do.
So that answer from Adam Peters
is 100% the right way to answer that question.
Taking himself out of the loop
of any future potential coaching staff changes
in saying it's the head coach's call
is the right answer publicly.
And by the way,
I believe him to a certain degree because I do think that the head coach should have the final say-so over his staff.
And that staff that's there right now is there largely because of Dan Quinn, whether or not he had relationships with the coaches he hired or not.
They are there because of Quinn more than anybody else.
Now, with that said, I do think that their relationship is very collaborative, and I am sure that Adam Peters,
would express an opinion about a coordinator or a coaching staff member if he has a strong opinion.
What I don't know is in this collaborative relationship, you know, who's more influential?
Who sways the other more often?
I don't know what the answer to that question is.
But I thought that the answer to J.P. Finley's question was the right way to handle that
question by Adam Peters. Now, that was kind of the Q&A today related to coaching staff
changes in Kingsbury in particular. As far as how I feel, I'm in no different position today than
I was on Friday. I spent some time talking about Cliff Kingsbury on Friday show because
of his comments about under center versus shotgun in his Thursday press conference.
I don't feel any differently about Cliff today than I did on Friday.
The only thing that's changed is that the chances of him not being here are greater in my mind today than they were on Friday.
But I am not one that believes that they'd be in trouble if Cliff Kingsbury was back as the offensive coordinator next year.
I'm just not at the point nowhere near it where I think this team has an offensive coordinator.
problem. I think Cliff's good. Again, like I said on Friday, I do prefer a Shanahan-style offense
with a quarterback that's under center more than, you know, what Cliff Kingsbury does with his
quarterbacks. But Cliff Kingsbury coordinated an elite, an elite level offense in 2024. And the
reason that that offense wasn't elite this year had nothing to do with him or how many times
his quarterback was under center, it had to do with the fact that the players that were his best
players in 2024 didn't play much football in 2025. The starting quarterback in particular
played in three games totally healthy start to finish. I'm not one that believes
that Cliff has to go.
I just am not.
I think Cliff actually in the last couple of games has proven how good of a coordinator he is.
I actually think people around the league will look at the job that Cliff did this year,
given what he had to work with and say, Bravo.
I mean, look at Josh Johnson just in the last two games,
a third string 39-year-old quarterback.
I mean, Josh Johnson looked pretty good yesterday, played pretty well.
I think Cliff's a very good offensive coordinator, even though simultaneously, I believe that a Shanahan-style offense is better.
It's my preference.
But I don't have to think about what Jaden would look like in a Shanahan-style offense, although I think he'd look great in it.
Because I know what he looks like in a Cliff Kingsbury offense.
He looks great in a Cliff Kingsbury offense.
He looks like an elite quarterback in Cliff Kingsbury's offense.
I've got 20 games of proof of that from 2024.
I don't have any proof of that this year because Jaden didn't play much football this year.
And when he did play, there wasn't much around him.
So you're not going to get me to run Cliff out of town.
If they decide that that's the way they want to go,
I will be very, very, you know, interested to see who they bring in.
Look, if they brought in Kevin Stefansky or Mike McDaniel, if he got fired,
I'd be excited about that, no doubt.
But it wouldn't change the way I think of Cliff.
Cliff is a good offensive mind and coordinator.
Frustrations aside over some of the play calling, like in the Minnesota game,
You know, I think this year was really a bungled mess all together in terms of what he had to deal with.
And, you know, the amount of time on task, as he likes to say, that they were all together.
But, yeah, I like Cliff Kingsbury.
I think he knows what he's doing.
And if he's the offensive coordinator next year, I'm going to be excited to see what that offense looks like.
you know, hopefully as a healthy offense next year with the best players on the team playing
in the majority of games.
All right.
So that was kind of, I think, even more so than the game, the big story this weekend.
Like, I think as we sit here on January 5th, you know, one day after the regular season ended,
I think the chances of two new coordinators are, you know,
you know, much higher than I thought they were on Friday.
You know, Ben saying 60-40, I thought was very interesting.
But it's also not going to surprise me at all if they don't think that there's a better solution out there.
And by the way, and I haven't mentioned this, did you see what Jaden's mother tweeted out last night?
uh miss jackson regina jackson jaden's mother tweet it out headed in the right direction let's go exclamation point exclamation point
officially loading jd5 slash k k k cliff kingsbury season three two heart emojis and then i love the hashtags hashtag race hail
hashtag in lowercase letters, HTTC, and then hashtag in caps, HTTR.
Nice job.
Jaden's mom.
So, I mean, you'd have to think she's speaking a bit for her son that Jaden would like to be back
with Cliff Kingsbury next year.
Why wouldn't he?
He had the greatest rookie season in the history of the NFL with Cliff.
as his offensive coordinator and then in the second season he didn't get much of an opportunity
to work with Cliff when he did he had some moments i mean i i still don't really get this
you know idea that some of you have that jaden played and then when he did play he regressed
somehow no he didn't regress it wasn't as good as it was last year but again he didn't
play with the same players he played last year. And when he was playing, he wasn't healthy
except for three games start to finish. All right, enough of that. Let me get to a quick game
take, a couple of other things that were said during the press conference today that I think
you'll find interesting. And then we'll wrap up week 18 with the meaningful games that were
played. So a lot more to go. We'll get it started after these words.

So the game take today is going to be a brief one.
But before we get started, look, I'm fine with those of you who wanted them to win the game
because of whatever reason you wanted them to win the game.
When we get to those situations at the end of seasons like this one,
I'm not rooting for them to win the game.
I'm rooting for them to lose the game,
especially after what happened at 1 o'clock earlier in the day.
With Cleveland winning and the Giants winning, a Washington lost to Philadelphia
meant that Washington would have picked number five overall versus where they ended up
because they won the game at number seven overall.
And I get that the draft sometimes produces much better players at seven than at number five.
The draft is the thing we know the least amount.
It's also the thing that people in the game know the least amount.
It's the ultimate crapshoot.
It's the ultimate, who knows?
Whenever you're talking about 37% being successful as a hit rate on something,
you know how hard it is.
You know, I've gotten all of your tweets and emails about who they should draft.
We've got plenty of time for that, and we will have opinions on those players.
I watch a lot of college football, and I have.
no idea. I mean, very rarely am I like, oh my God, if they have a chance. Jaden was one of those
players. But, you know, we're so wrong on this. And they're wrong on this. Everybody's wrong
on the draft much of the time, like two-thirds of the time. But here's the one thing that I would say
to those of you who would say, there's no big difference between five and seven. Yes.
there is. Of course there's a difference. Yes, the results may turn out better. Who knows,
if you pick seventh rather than fifth. You get a player that was second on your list rather than
first on your list and the guy that was second on your list turns out to be a much better player.
Of course, the results might show that, hey, you shouldn't have been worried about it. But
there's no way to debate the difference in value of having the fifth over.
overall pick versus the seventh overall pick. The fifth overall pick, based on where it is,
brings more potential leverage. So look, this is not a big quarterback draft as it stands now,
and there will be a lot of changes in the way this draft is viewed between now and April.
So Washington, even at five, probably wouldn't have had that ability to trade back and get a haul.
That ability just may not exist in this year's draft. But would you rather draft,
higher or lower?
And I'm not talking about before the season starts.
I'm talking about going into your season finale, which is meaningless, and there's nothing
to gain from winning the game.
Is it better to draft higher or lower?
It's, of course, better to draft higher, even though the actual results and the benefit
from that may not be realized at some point.
But going into it, it's better to be fifth than seventh.
So look, you know, you can't get teams to tank.
Now, could they have sat Josh Johnson and played Jeff Driscoll or Sam Hartman?
Could they have not played Terry McCorn?
Yeah, I don't think they should have played Terry McCorn in the game.
But, you know, they've already basically got a shell of a team out there.
They've got three-fifths of their offensive line not playing.
They've got their third-string quarterback, Josh Johnson playing.
They've got guys like, you know, Tuddle and Jackson and, you know,
Barber and a bunch of dudes running around that, you know,
you could barely knew until a week or two ago.
So, yeah, I mean, I would have preferred, and I was rooting for them and watching the game,
for them to lose the game.
And I get it.
Like, you know, for the players and the coaches, it's another sign that they haven't given up.
The culture is good.
I'm a actual buyer into all of that.
I don't think we saw them quit on Quinn.
They played hard those final four games.
That Minnesota game is the outlier,
but the giant two Philly games and the Dallas game,
they played hard with, I mean,
legitimately second, third,
and practice squad players in various spots
and without their best player on the field, obviously,
in the quarterback.
And so it was nice to see them,
once again go out there and give great effort and, you know, maybe there's some carryover to that.
But in terms of the value of winning the game, none, zero, you know, the great effort in losing
at the gun on a field goal, you would have had the same, I think, you know, small takeaway benefit
from it. So look, I'm just being honest, I'm in that camp, you know, yesterday, not five weeks
ago, four weeks ago, but yesterday I was in the camp of, yeah, I'd rather them not win this
game. I mean, it doesn't benefit them to win this game. The benefit is greater for them
to have a pick in the top five. Here's the other thing, too. Let me just find this email that
I got from this dude. Where is it? Daniel
P. Fire Quinn now. They barely beat a team playing backups. This win was the most embarrassing game of the season. The Eagles played third stringers and we barely won the game. Are you kidding me? Tyler writes, a pathetic way to end the season, lost draft position by barely beating a team not trying to win with their backups. You know, I saw a lot of this from some of you, like you thought it was.
an embarrassing display that they didn't blow out a Philadelphia team playing their backups and
sitting primarily starters, you know, and even some of their backups.
They did actually play some of their starters on defense.
Jordan Davis was out there, or Jomo was out there.
Devante Smith played in a series on offense.
But, I mean, are you ignoring that Josh Johnson was our team's starting quarterback?
A third string, 39-year-old quarterback?
I mean, who were the Eagles playing?
The Eagles weren't playing an NFL team?
When you start your third-string quarterback in the NFL,
98 times out of 100, you are doomed, doomed.
You have no chance when you get to your third-string quarterback against anybody.
By the way, the Eagles' backups are pretty good players.
especially on defense.
So I don't understand that thinking.
Like you're too focused on who they were playing
versus who we had on the field.
All right.
The game take.
I'll start with the good.
And I'll start with Terry McClorn,
who had four catches for 57 yards on four targets.
And he drew four defensive penalties
that resulted in first downs.
I understand Quinnian Mitchell wasn't out there.
Cooper DeGine wasn't out there.
But again, Philly has incredible depth defensively,
and they had a lot of their rotation players
and even some starters out there, you know,
from Jordan Davis to a Jomo to Jihad Campbell to Jalick's Hunt.
You know, they had a, Nolan Smith was out there.
They had a lot of guys that have played a lot of football this year.
So, you know, Washington's offense against Philadelphia's defense, this was not, you know, a JV squad that the Eagles had out there defensively.
Terry, I thought, was the best player on Washington's team for the game.
I have no idea how it was graded out by any of the advanced numbers, but I had Terry as the most impactful player to their win.
Yesterday, you know, going back to the conversations during the offseason, what's Terry worth if he doesn't play?
I mean, receivers generally are not worth games, plural.
But I don't think they win that game yesterday without Terry.
I mean, he kept them on the field, drawing one penalty after another, making one catch after another.
So Terry McCorn, number one on my list of good.
Number two, Cliff Kingsbury.
I think anybody that's objective would look at that game yesterday and say three-fifths of the offensive line is out and he's starting a 39-year-old third-string quarterback, and they ended up having 25 first downs, 24 points.
They were 6 of 11 on third down.
They were one-for-one on fourth down.
They were three-for-four in the red zone.
By the way, and I bet most of you don't know this, although I know I've talked about it at various points.
in the season. Washington finished the year ranked seventh in the NFL in Red Zone offense. Or I
should say they were seventh going into yesterday. They were three for four, so it's possible that
they moved up on that list. But Cliff Kingsbury took a third string 39-year-old quarterback with
three new offensive line players and moved the football against a Philadelphia
a non-starter primarily team, but still some talent that was out there defensively.
Cliff Kingsbury's on the list of good.
Josh Johnson's on my list of good.
Do you know what his QBR was for the game?
This shocked me because I didn't think it was this.
Because I thought, you know, basically, and I won't bury the lead, I thought he had a B-level game,
B-plus maybe, but certainly B-level.
He made a lot of good throws.
You know, on that opening drive of the game where Moody missed that short field goal from 24 yards out,
really good slant to Terry on a second and nine was kind of a good play design with the fake screen.
He was super decisive on a 14-yard scramble, made a really good throw to Terry on their second drive on a third and seven,
had, you know, good plays on that final drive of the first half before the made 56-yard field goal,
a couple of good throws, a good scramble there at the end to get him into what I didn't think was great field goal range,
but was field goal range, and they ended up, you know, getting the field goal from Moody from 56,
even though he couldn't kick one from 24.
He had a really good escape and scramble in the fourth quarter through the touchdown pass to Bates, had the touchdown run to give him the lead.
You know, he fumbled that snap. He threw a pick. You know, there were some bad plays in there. But overall, I thought Josh Johnson had a decent game. His QBR was 89.4. Man, that is an awfully high QBR. I know he rushed.
for a bunch of yards in the game, had nine rushes.
I would say eight of them were scrambles, right?
For 45 yards, you know, the bootleg touchdown was probably the only non-scramble among his runs in the game.
But I thought Josh Johnson deserved to be on the good list with, you know, a B-level performance.
I mean, 89.4 says A-level performance, high A-level performance.
I didn't see that from his performance, but I saw BB Plus.
Chris Rodriguez, man, I just like Rodriguez.
I like him more than Bill.
I like Bill, though, too.
I do.
I like both of them.
I think they've got a decent running back situation.
Rodriguez 16 carries 65 yards.
He's got good balance.
He's got good lean.
He's great after contact.
He's got decent vision for a big guy.
I think he's got good footwork for a big.
big guy. I like Rodriguez. I like them a lot. Their running back situation is fine going into next
year. Sure, you'd love the superstar, and neither one of those two guys is a superstar back,
but they're more than serviceable. And that's not an area of need heading into the off-season.
Rodriguez on my good list. I thought the pass rush in the game was pretty good. You know,
Philadelphia definitely, you know, what's interesting about the Eagles putting Tanner McKee out there
is there are a lot of Philadelphia people that will tell you, they think Tanner McKee is a better
thrower of the football than Jalen Hertz. I think they believed that they could beat Washington
with Tanner McKee at quarterback. He was 21 of 40. He actually dropped back 43 times in the game.
They only ran the ball 19 times. I mean, Tank Bigsby, you know, rushed
for 75 yards on 16 carries, 4.7 yards per carry.
It's another one of those situations where sometimes I look at teams that are playing our team,
and I'm like, what Souter said about the Lions that week,
that they wouldn't have had to throw the ball one time to win the game.
And Tank Bigsby could have rushed for 150 had they given him the opportunity to do so.
I was not impressed with Tanner McKee, but I thought part of it was the past rush
pressure that Washington put on.
I thought Wagner had some good rushes.
I thought Louvre had some decent rushes.
I thought Von Miller did.
Doran Payne, you know, had a couple of decent rushes.
Yeah, I thought that the pass rush was somewhat disruptive in the game.
That's it on my good list.
Oh, Moody's 56-yarder is on the good list.
his 24-yarder is on the bad list, so I'll mention that right now, along with, you know, the false start penalties, they've had so many of them this year. They are disruptive, and they're really drive killers with a team that doesn't have good players on the field. And that's been a problem. But you're going to get a lot of the penalties and a lot of the timeouts when you've got a third string quarterback and three new offensive linemen.
and a bunch of players playing that haven't played as much.
But still, it doesn't look good.
And it doesn't take away from it being a negative in the game.
You know, defensively, yes, there was some pass rush,
but there's still just too many easy pitch and catches, man.
The first touchdown pass was just, you know, not great to the tight end.
Tank Bigsby, I think could have had 150 if they had given them the opportunity.
This defense has to be torn down to the studs and rebuilt.
It's the worst of my lifetime of watching this football team.
It is the absolute worst.
They did nothing well, literally nothing well, and almost everything poorly.
Injuries were a factor, but ultimately I've come to the conclusion that even if
Dorrance Armstrong and Dietrich Wise and Trey Amos and Marshaun Lattimore and
everybody else that ended up, you know, having their seasons lost to injury, I think even if they
had stayed healthy, this would have been not even an average defense, maybe slightly improved
against the run versus last year's defense, but not a good defense. That's to me the whole
offseason. Defense, defense, defense. Because we've seen it this year in the NFL, and we saw it
over the weekend. I mean, on Saturday night with Seattle, wow, that defensive performance.
You can't contend with a defense as bad as Washington's defense. I feel good that they can rebound
and have a big offensive year next year, assuming everybody's healthy. But it's the defense
that will be the biggest offseason question in my mind. And I thought in moments during the
game yesterday against, you know, a backup quarterback and a bunch of backup players that it just
wasn't anywhere near good enough. With that one exception, I mentioned it, I thought the pass rush
was, you know, impressive. And again, look, I mean, shy tuttles out there and Ricky Barber's out
there and, you know, there's somebody else that I didn't recognize. Oh, well, Drake Jackson,
the guy that they, you know, acquired mid-year, the former.
second round pick from the 49ers. He's got some talent, by the way. You can see it. But yeah,
I think that's it. You know, other observations from the game, I thought that the play
before the touchdown run by Chris Rodriguez to make it 7-7, I thought he was in, and they should
have challenged that. For Philadelphia, man, that guy, Darius Cooper, who had that catch
down to the one-yard line at the end of the first half and then got called for taunting, man,
get that opportunity to play and you get a taunting penalty that kills the drive because two
plays later was the Reeves interception and the really good return. I love Jeremy Reeves,
by the way. I should have put him on the list. He's there, he and Bobby Wagner, for a team
that's a bad tackling team, Jeremy Reeves and Bobby Wagner, of course, Wagner, man, they can
tackle. And Reeves is such a great effort player for sure. But that player, Cooper, that
taunted Jonathan Jones, I mean, it cost them points and then they got the interception and
Washington ends up kicking a field goal on the other end for a halftime 10 to 7 lead. All right,
that's it from the game take. Some of the other things that I wanted you to hear from this press
conference and we'll talk about the three or four games from the NFL weekend that were significant,
including last night's thriller. We'll do that and more after these words from a few of our sponsors.

The smell test six and one last week.
I don't know when it's going to end.
At this point, we're down to just, you know, a handful of games left.
Wild Card weekend, Divisional Round Weekend, Championship Weekend, and the
Super Bowl. Of course, we've got two semifinal college games and a championship game.
But this is now going to be more likely than not a top three smell test season for me all
time, and it might be number one when all is said and done. Yes, six and one over the weekend.
The only loss was Tampa minus three at home on Saturday afternoon. They won by two.
felt like a bad beat on that fourth down deep throw to Tet McMillan for the Panthers.
But whatever, I've won a lot of games that way as well.
In recapping the significant games of the weekend, let's actually start there.
Rain, heavy rain in Tampa for this game that wasn't necessarily going to decide the NFC
South and Les Carolina won it because of the Atlanta, New Orleans game yesterday.
and that game's impact on the NFC South.
It was certainly not a game in which you would say,
man, the winner's going to have a chance to beat the Rams.
Carolina ends up winning the division, losing the game,
but because Atlanta beat New Orleans yesterday,
winning the division,
I actually think Tampa would have had a better shot against the Rams,
just because defensively,
I think they're a little bit more capable player-weller,
experience-wise, coaching-wise.
Baker Mayfield is a bit of a gamer, that's for sure.
He's thrown some bad picks this year,
but I thought he played pretty well in the game.
So Tampa won that game 16 to 14,
but eventually got eliminated by the Falcons beating the Saints.
So the Panthers will face the Rams.
The night cap on Saturday.
My God, Seattle's defense.
This was a 49er offense that had averaged.
42 points per game and 457 yards per game in their last three.
They were completely shut down.
The Seattle defense and the Houston defense right now, good Lord.
And I would probably put Philadelphia's group in there as well.
But Seattle getting home field advantage throughout,
even though I think this is a wide open postseason,
them playing in Seattle no more than two games to get to the Super Bowl with that defense.
it's going to take a lot to beat them in the NFC.
I think your chance is that Sam Darnold soils himself,
and there were a couple of moments in that game Saturday night,
but for the most part, he was solid, the running game.
I've thought all year.
Why isn't their running game better with Kenneth Walker and Zach Charbonnet?
Well, they got it going against San Francisco.
The 49er defense, we knew,
was injured and terrible. It had been pretty much all year long. What I didn't see coming was
Seattle's complete shutdown of Brock Purdy & Company. Pertie threw for 127 yards. I mean,
they rushed for 53. Christian McCaffrey, eight carries 23 yards. The 49ers. You guys watched
them against Chicago and against Indy in some of their recent games. They had 173 total
yards and nine first downs.
The final score of 13 to 3 did not do that game justice.
Seattle should have scored 30 in this game.
They missed two field goals.
They got stymied on a fourth down situation in the red zone where they got a little
bit too cute on a first and goal from the one and Darnold took a big sack.
Seattle, scary good on defense in their route of the 49ers.
Yesterday early, you know, the Atlanta went over.
The Saints was a big game for the NFC South.
You know, at the end of the day, I may have said this on Friday.
Atlanta was the best team in the NFC South when we got to the end of the year.
And the Saints were the second best team in the NFC South, led by on defense,
Chase Young, who got his 10th sack of the season yesterday.
He was a terror in that game.
But the Falcons, you know, finished.
Five and two, when Kirk took over.
They fired Rahim Morris, fired Terry Fontano, the GM.
They'll start from scratch there.
Remember, they were going to hire Belichick, and Blank was talked out of it because he didn't think that Belichick, or they didn't think that Belichick would coach long enough.
Meantime, they hired Raheem Morris, and he's done in two short seasons.
The rest of the day really was about seating, Denver clenching the one seed with an easy win over the Chargers.
The Bears obviously had that opportunity to clinch the two seed with a win or a Philadelphia lost.
They lost to the Lions and the Eagles.
You know, they've gotten criticized for this.
My feeling on Philadelphia not playing for the two seed or not playing more seriously for the two seed is that, yes, it probably will impact.
their chances to win a Super Bowl, but I have to trust in a guy who I think at times is a bit of
a wild card as a game managing head coach, but Nick Siriani knows his team, and I think he
believes that the rest and the health of his team was more important than playing for a second
home game potentially, or even a third home game if Seattle were to lose in the divisional round.
And I also think the Eagles just feel like they can go beat anybody anywhere.
But they get the 49ers in the first round rather than the Packers.
And if they play the Bears in the second round, and the Bears are, I think it's a pickum now.
They were an underdog to the Packers initially.
But maybe they feel like they can beat that Chicago team, you know, regardless of where the games played,
even though they didn't do it on Black Friday at home.
Look, the game of the day in one of the games that,
the year was the final game of the year, the 272nd regular season game. Steelers 26, Ravens 24.
It was a vintage Aaron Rogers game. He was brilliant. No DK Metcalf. They ran the ball a little bit.
I think Jalen Warren did a really good job running the football, but for the most part,
receivers not getting separation. Baltimore's defense is not what Cleveland's defense was last week.
benefit going into the game. But I thought Aaron Rogers and Lamar Jackson put on a show in the
fourth quarter especially, and it ended up being one of the thrilling games of the year. Two missed
kicks added drama to it. Chris Boswell missed the extra point after Rogers threw the go-head
touchdown with 55 seconds left. I mean, Boswell never misses. And then we had Tyler Loop after
Lamar Jackson got him into field goal range with an incredible fourth down throw to Isaiah likely.
and from 44 yards out, he missed.
Now, I think John Harbaugh screwed up.
They had a timeout left, and they had time to run another play to get in better field goal range.
That's Pittsburgh.
That's that turf.
It's not a great field goal kickers situation, and he could have gotten closer for Loop.
He missed it.
Pittsburgh goes on.
They get Houston on Monday night.
Baltimore is done.
We'll see what happens because there is conversation.
about Harbaugh potentially being done. We'll see if that ends up happening. He's a really good
coach, John Harbaugh is, and they had significant injuries this year. And obviously not having
Lamar Jackson for games and not having him fully healthy for games. But what a performance he put on
in the fourth quarter of that game. What an outstanding game. Look, I was rooting for Pittsburgh. I bet
Pittsburgh to win the AFC North before the season started.
I also have said on this show many times to a lot of pushback that Aaron Rogers isn't
done, that if you had watched him in New York last year, you knew that he could still throw
the football like Aaron Rogers.
He may not be as mobile and he's not as elite as he once was, but as a thrower of the
football.
He is still elite level, pure passer.
And he still has the ability to control and manipulate a defense, even without his best offensive players, which he will get back, D.K. Metcalf, for the playoff game.
That matchup Monday night's an interesting one because I've picked Houston, you know, for a month and a half to make the Super Bowl out of the AFC.
And I think it's going to be a tough game Monday night at Pittsburgh for them.
C.J. Stroud's going to end up being the key. Turnovers will be huge in that game.
mistakes. I love wild card weekend. Rams, Panthers, I mean, the Rams are 10-point favorites on
the road. Remember, they were 10-point favorites when they lost it, Carolina, a month ago.
The bears are now a slight favorite. They were a slight underdog. I see him now as a one-point
favorite at my bookie over the Packers in the nightcap on Saturday. Bills Jags, bills are
one-and-a-half-point favorites at Jacksonville. Jacksonville's one.
eight in a row. What a matchup that is. Forty-niners at Eagles, the Eagles are four and a half-point
favorites. I think the same sort of trouble that San Francisco had with Seattle's defense could be
the issue Sunday, but the big difference is the Eagles are nowhere near as good offensively
as Seattle is. Chargers at Pats on Sunday night, Pats are three and a half point favorites.
Do you know that the Patriots ended up beating one team this year?
year with their 14 and 3 record that had a winning record, and that was Buffalo earlier in the
season. And then we get Houston as a three-point road favorite in the Monday night game at
Pittsburgh. So that is, by the way, one, two, three of the six games, we've got road favorites,
and Chicago is barely a home favorite. Should be a wild, wild card weekend with Denver and
Seattle waiting in the wings. All right, I'll finish up with some.
of the sound from this press conference that I wanted you to hear.
I won't get to all of it today, but I'll get to some of it today.
We've got, you know, we can spread this stuff out.
There was a lot.
It was a 45-minute-plus press conference, but we'll get to it.
Some of it that I wanted to play for you when we come back after these words from a few of our sponsors.
So I've already played some of the sound from the Dan Quinn, Adam Peters press conference.
late this afternoon, especially the parts dealing with Cliff Kingsbury and any potential
coaching changes. We talked about that in the open to the show. But there were a few more
sound bites, especially from Adam Peters, because we don't get to hear from Adam Peters regularly.
We haven't heard from him since the beginning of the season. We get a lot of Dan Quinn during
the season. But one of the very first questions of the press conference came from John
Kime to Adam Peters about the summer of Terry McClaren's contract.
Here was the question and answer.
And Adam, for you, since we haven't talked to you in a little while,
want to go back to the summer with Terry,
given how the season played out for Terry, the injuries,
the early struggles and all that,
how would you assess how that situation was handled
and how can you apply whatever you learn to future situation?
Yeah, certainly.
I think both us and Terry,
would agree that we would like to get that done a little bit faster. It didn't happen that way.
Certainly, you know, there's reasons for that, but ultimately you'd like to get those things
done before we did in terms of where Terry's at. I thought, you know, obviously he got hurt
early, but I thought he did a really good job at the end of the year. I was really pleased for where
he's at playing at a really high level right now and going into next year. So really pleased with the
end result of the contract obviously you'd like to get it done earlier and I think that's a good lesson too
just um just engaging in those things a little bit earlier and hopefully you get to the um to the to the
to the end before we did on this one and certainly we'll do that moving forward so there were two parts
of adams answer there that were interesting to me and i'll concede up front that they may be
interesting to me in part because i had a very strong opinion uh about the way the negotiation with
went down, and I have some knowledge as to how it went down. And my position, for those of you
that don't remember it or never heard it, it was very pro-team. And I think when I heard Adam
right off the bat answer the question by saying, I think both us and Terry would agree that we
would have liked to have gotten that deal done a little bit faster. What he's saying there is,
look, man, don't look at us, okay?
We were not solely responsible for how long the deal took to get done.
You know, Terry and his agent were delusional about their worth,
and that was the holdup more than anything else.
And then the other part that I thought was interesting is,
I don't know if you caught it, but he slipped in, he said,
so really pleased with the end result of the contract.
Obviously, he said you'd like to get it done early.
earlier, and I think that's a good lesson too, but, you know, he was really pleased with the
end result of the contract. Yeah, the team essentially got the deal that they thought was the
fair deal, both sides going in. And obviously, Terry and his agent did not get anywhere near
what they were looking at. Adam Peters was asked about Laramie Tunsell. The season he had,
and, you know, where he will prioritize getting Tunsell signed to a contract extension,
Tunsell reminder has just one year left on his current deal.
Here's what Adam Peter said about Laramie Tunsell.
Tom Shadd with the Washington Post.
Adam, I had a couple questions about Laramie Tunsell, obviously one of the big offseason additions.
How would you evaluate kind of the impact that he had on the team?
Have you had any talks with him, early talks, about a contract extension?
and did the situation with Terry
kind of inform how you'll go about
those potential talks?
Yeah, in terms of the evaluation,
I think, in his impact on our team,
I thought it was really outstanding,
both on the field and in the locker room.
He's a great leader.
I don't think, and he's not really up front about it,
but he's an outstanding leader.
He's an outstanding mentor to the other old linemen.
He's a really good teammate,
and in a lot of ways that you don't really see
because he's not looking for attention,
but really just it's been really, really awesome
to get to know him and to see how he goes about his business,
incredibly hard worker.
And then on the field, I thought, you know,
he was one of the better left tackles,
if not the best in the league.
I don't, he didn't get recognition for the Pro Bowl,
which I was disappointed in,
but you look at the metrics,
he did a great job.
So that's all to say that, you know,
we've had, you know, constant communication.
He's self-represented, but he has a team around him that we have constant communication
with and had throughout the year.
So I think what I can say is we definitely want to get something done with him
and sooner rather than later.
Bottom line when it comes to the Laramie Tunsell trade, outstanding trade for the team.
It was a trade that provided this team this year and hopefully for the next few,
one of the five or six elite level pass protecting left tackles in the game.
That's what Laramie Tunsell was this year by almost all advanced metrics.
He was elite level as a pass protector at the left tackle position.
Glad to hear Adam Peter say that while he is self-represented,
he's got a team around him and they've been in constant communication
throughout the year.
So him saying at the end, we definitely want to get something done with him sooner rather than
later is obvious, I would say, but it's good to hear him confirm that.
That has to be an off-season priority to get Laramie Tunsel extended so you don't have
him playing next year at an elite level heading into unrestricted free agency.
They cannot allow that to happen.
This was Adam Peters and Dan Quinn talking about the last two draft classes.
Their first, Adam Peters first in 2024, and then this year's draft class.
This was both gentlemen on that.
When you take a look at your draft classes, so last year and this year, how well do you think they're doing?
Are they right where you think they would be right now, or have they exceeded expectations or not so much?
I can start candy on that.
I visited with a lot of them over the last two weeks or so.
And I love some of the trajectory that some of them are on.
The belief that we have in them is so strong.
And so that's kind of what your first and second year is.
It kind of goes up and it goes down.
I wish the development was just like going straight up.
That would be awesome.
But what I can say is like we've got some really,
really good strong foundation pieces of what we're building that are commanders that play it the
right way and like to see them develop and grow like that's one of things I love the most about our
team and where they're headed yeah I would echo that and just say you know there's a lot of
really young players that still have a great future ahead of them so there's guys that
haven't had as many opportunities as others for whatever reason and a lot of times it's because
there's good players in front of them but we still have a ton of belief in all of them
and they all have another, you know, another level they can go to every, every single one of them,
and they're all willing to do that.
So very happy with the young men, and like you said, some have developed faster, some have
had their ups and downs, and that's okay.
We all do, especially when we're first starting something.
But in terms of all that, I have a ton of belief in all those guys.
So I certainly wouldn't have expected criticism of any of the players or classes as a whole
in the first two years by either Dan Quinn or Adam Peters.
But I also agree with a lot of what they said.
I think this is one of the big mistakes we make as fans to declare anything on draft
classes or specific players in drafts a year or two years after they were picked.
Sometimes people want to declare things five or six games into something.
I mean, there are occasional obvious race.
red flags, or on the flip side, obvious brilliance, but it's just so hard.
I mean, just on this show today, I talked about a player Chase Young, who, you know,
there's no way any fan of our team would say anything other than major bust.
And he was when he was here, but right now he's playing at a very high level and looks
like he may be turning into a monster at the age of 26 as a disruptive defensive player.
Malik Willis, you know, written off as can't do it.
This guy's not an NFL player.
And look at the way he played this year in relief of Jordan Love.
There are so many examples of that.
It's just hard, you know, with super young players that are adjusting to a completely different game.
And it takes a lot of them.
a lot of time and, you know, hearing them be positive about a lot of the characteristics in
addition to, you know, the potential play on the field is a positive thing. But I think in some cases,
they have a good sense of whether or not they got it right with players more so than we do. But I
think even they have, you know, that there's a chance that they could be surprised by the way
they feel one way or the other by a player next year or the year after.
So the last soundbite from Adam Peters and from this press conference today that I want
to play for you, there was a question, and I'll leave the question in there that I don't know
who asked it, but he basically talked about the 2019 49ers.
Remember that team lost the Super Bowl to the Chiefs?
it was a great team
Kyle's first playoff team
13 and 3
the next season
2020 decimated by
injuries and they ended up
having a 6 and 10
season by the way the same thing
happened to them in 2023
they were 12 and 5 lost the Super Bowl
to Kansas City the next year
last year tons of injuries
and they went 6 and 11
but he was asked specifically
about whether or not
you'll hear the question but
whether or not he can compare the experience in 2020 after the season they had in 2019
to what this team went through this year.
This is for Adam.
This is going back a couple years for you, but you were with the 49ers in kind of an
eerily similar spot where you had a breakthrough year.
Then next year there were some injuries kind of across the board, kind of fell back.
And then you guys got right back to it.
Does this situation remind you at all?
that one and what lessons did you learn of being able to build and have that roster right back
after kind of that one down year following the breakthrough yeah first of all i hope so i hope so
hope that happens um you know and those those things i mean that i remember that year vividly and
it's a nightmare you know when you have these certain games like we had in green bay or we had that
in that year in new york where we just it was like carnage and you know it's really hard to bounce
back. But I think, you know, the lessons are, you know, you look into everything. You look
into, you know, why the guys got hurt. Sometimes they got hurt because it's just a freak injury.
Sometimes they got hurt because we didn't do a good enough job, loan managing or getting them
warmed up or whatever it is. So you can look into all that. I have great belief in our
health and performance team. They do a really good job. They have a ton of care for our players
and really appreciate that. But you look at it.
into that. You look into, you know, the type of players you bring in their injury histories moving
forward. You really dig into that. You know, a lot of the times, you know, the past injury history
dictates kind of their future injury history. So that's a big piece of it. But really what I'm
proud of this year, and I think that year as well, that was a little more challenging because
it was a COVID year and we ended up having to move to Arizona for a month. But it really tests your
resolve and attest your what we call
Brotherhood. And
what was cool to see
today, we met with a lot of players
today on the checkout process and
really
tip my cat to Q here
because a lot of them, despite the
poor results, everybody really still
believed in us and this team and what we're
doing in the direction we're going. So
I think that's something that you can really
lean on and say, okay, we can dig
into this more and
you know, bank on that we're going to have a little bit better luck with that next year
and continue to add healthy pieces and get those guys that we lost back, which is a big deal
too. We get a lot of those guys back, which will really make us look a lot different.
Adam Peters has been through this before. You know, he's not going to sit there and just tell
you, look, I can answer all of your questions with the obvious, which is it wasn't our team
that we put out there this year for most of the season.
it happens in the NFL. It happened to us this year. They're just not into the public excuse making, which doesn't necessarily play well with a lot of people, even though that is the correct answer as to what happened this year. But he's been through this, and they bounced back that following year. You know, following that 2020 season, the following season, they were very healthy. They went 10 and 7, and they lost.
the NFC championship game to the Rams.
And then if you recall, the following season, they were dominant.
They got to the NFC championship game in Philadelphia, and they lost all their
quarterbacks and the game, 31 to 7.
They had Christian McCaffrey, and they're taking Wildcat snaps at the end of the game
after Brock Purdy and Josh Johnson.
I'm pretty sure it was Josh Johnson, who was the backup to Purdy in that NFC championship game
in San Francisco.
they both got hurt and they ended up with McCaffrey taking Wildcat snaps at the end of that game.
But I thought that that was an interesting question because I've actually talked about in relation to the 49ers season this year
and them not being impacted by the injuries as much as Washington has, I've suggested that's an aberration, man.
The 49ers have had other seasons that fell apart completely, even with their great front office and great coaching staff.
to injuries. In the 2020 season, the 2024 season are both examples of that. All right, that was
some of the sound that I really wanted to play for you. There were other sound bites from Adam Peters
that were worth playing, and I will scatter some of those across the rest of the week. It was a long
press conference with a lot to it, so we'll get to some more of it on probably Wednesday,
Maybe a little bit with Tommy tomorrow as well.
One last thing before we close up shop for the day.
How about this report from longtime NBA reporter Mark Stein?
The Wizards have emerged as a legitimate potential trade destination for Atlanta's Tray Young.
It would be a deal constructed, centered around C.J. McCollum's expiring contract.
that would be wild.
Look, the wizards aren't in position to go after anything right now,
but they have won four out of their last six games,
although they got routed last night by the Timberwolves.
But something to keep an eye on over the next 24 or so hours.
All right, that's it for the day.
I am back tomorrow with Tommy.
