Starting point is 00:00:02 You don't want it. You don't need it. But you're going to get it anyway. The Kevin Cheehan Show. Here's Kevin. All right, Tommy is here today. I am here. And we actually have some guests in the studio.
Starting point is 00:00:17 Tommy's in studio with me. And John and Courtney are here. They were at Tom's fundraiser back in June, was it? It was in May. And John was there. John was there. I met John. Did not meet his lovely wife.
Starting point is 00:00:32 but they John won the auction item, which I don't think there was a lot of competition for, which was an in-studio visit for the podcast recording. And they're here today, and it's great to have you guys here. Great to have you guys. Very generous supporter of the D.C. Grays. Yeah. And by the way, of Shelley's backroom, one of our sponsors of this show. Where the event was.
Starting point is 00:00:56 Yes. At 13th and F. Streets, Northwest. Shelly's is a great spot. This review on Apple, listen to Kevin Sheehan, listen to him for years, whatever. He's a huge Washington sports fan, which I enjoy, but he's also dialed in on most leagues, college, and professional. I look forward to listening every day. Tommy, to say that the Chiefs would beat international soccer teams after practicing
Starting point is 00:01:25 for a minimal amount of time is ridiculous. The amount of skill and training that these players commit to is insane. Most of these international players are selected by the time they're teenagers. Professional soccer players are unique athletes. With that said, I'm a huge fan of yours as well. Keep up the good work. That's from A. Roach 82 via Apple Podcasts. If you haven't rated or reviewed us, especially on Apple, do so.
Starting point is 00:01:52 Five stars, if you're so inclined, which A Roach 82 gave us. And a quick one to two sentence review. Tommy said last week, in our very sophisticated discussion of soccer. Nuanced. Very nuanced. Very nuanced. Yes.
Starting point is 00:02:08 Discussion of soccer. He suggested that if we sent the Kansas City Chiefs over to Qatar or cutter. We send them the soccer camp for three weeks. Well, I thought you said over to Cutter for three weeks. And then they send them to the World Cup. That they would win the World Cup. Yes. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:02:23 I mean, a reasonable take, of course, which really is the most ridiculous take I've ever heard. I'm going to say something, though, about soccer. Did you watch the England game on Friday? I'm just curious. You didn't. Yeah, I did. You did? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:02:39 So I, as you know, used to be with you on soccer. I mean, I thought it was dumb. I thought there was no excitement. There's, I mean, you wait 30 minutes. Maybe you get a shot on goal. Maybe you get a goal. The whole thing was absurd. And you and I for years when we did the radio show would make fun of it.
Starting point is 00:02:56 And you always said people who are soccer fans are baseball. Soccer is for the non-sports fan. It's the sport for people who don't like sports. That's right. So on Friday, I'm sitting there, and I've got all the family in town. You know, I've got all three boys home, and all three of them. I mean, they're trying, and I'm trying too. But there was just no action.
Starting point is 00:03:19 Now, all I kept hearing is what a great game it was, nil-nil with, like, six total shots. I'm trying, like, my favorite part of these World Cup games, and I'm going to watch the game to do. today against Iran. I'm going to watch it too. Okay. My favorite part is the dueling national anthems of the countries. When you see these national anthems played for the two countries that are playing
Starting point is 00:03:41 and to see how emotional other countries get when their national anthem is played and how every single player I've noticed just an observation watching, I don't know, a half dozen games, every player is singing full lung and they know every word. I think they know every word for all I know. I mean, it's in a different language. And then I also like before that when the kids bring the players out onto the field. That's my favorite part of the game. Well, I might want to point out, we get so emotional about the national anthem here.
Starting point is 00:04:14 Sometimes some athletes will drop to their knees. Yes, they will. They'll do that. They're very emotional about it. I don't know. The pageantry of it still is the part that's attractive for me. but the game, which I do recognize the skill, and of course Tommy was partially tongue-in-cheek
Starting point is 00:04:34 on the Chiefs being able to win the World Cup after three weeks of soccer camp. I don't think you should speak for me. I did. And you don't really believe that. I do. Actually, I think the Lakers would do better. No, the Chiefs.
Starting point is 00:04:47 The Chiefs would not. But, man. Because half those soccer players that they would face would run off the field. Why? Because they'd be so scared. No, they wouldn't. Oh, my God.
Starting point is 00:05:00 Do you see the feigning of the injuries? Of course, it's painful to watch. It's the worst part. They wouldn't have to fake these injuries. Well, you would get, there'd be a lot of yellows and reds handed out. I think they're called yellow cards, red cards. That's the worst part. And I don't know why this is an attractive part of the game to people who love the game,
Starting point is 00:05:22 where they're rolling around as if they've been shot multiple. times and then you watch the replay and there's no contact at all. There's nothing. And sometimes when there is contact, it's minimal. If they were playing football, they'd be in trouble, but it's a different game, soccer. Who do you like in today's game? Well, you know, we talked about this before the podcast. I mean, I'm going to watch it and I'm really pulling for the United States because to me, this is a blood game with Iran. I mean, this is still about the hostages to me. I mean, I can't believe that a generation has forgotten that in 1979, there were, what, 44 American hostages?
Starting point is 00:06:08 I think it was more than that, but go ahead. And we had the yellow ribbons on trees. That were taken hostage in Iran and kept there. Well, they were kept there for 444 days. I think that was it. Yeah. And when Reagan got elected, they were out pretty quickly. Yeah. Yeah. And that, my God, I mean, we've never, there's never been any retribution for that. There never really has. So, I mean, I would hope the United States doesn't lose to Iran, you know, and create more embarrassment for the country. So, no, this is, I'm pulling for the men today, buddy.
Starting point is 00:06:40 You know, there was one of the hostages, a lot of the hostages were from the area because they were government workers. But there was one and his name was Bruce Langen. I think that's how you pronounce it. He was from Bethesda. And I remember, I think he had kids that went to my high school, Walt Whitman, in Bethesda. And that was the, you know, when he came home, he was treated like a hero. And you asked me before, I wonder if any of these people are alive. I looked it up.
Starting point is 00:07:10 He was 58 at the time. So I'm pretty sure he's not alive now. Yeah. I would bet. That's 43 years ago. Yes. I mean, he'd be pretty old at this point. He'd be 101 years old.
Starting point is 00:07:21 And Bruce, if you're out there, we're sorry. Yeah. And if you are alive, we hope you're well and listening to the podcast. And I hope you're rooting for the United States today then, buddy. So today, just as an FYI, do you know what the stakes are? Well, I think I do. They have to win or else they're out. That's right.
Starting point is 00:07:40 A draw does them no good. And I know that when they played England, even if they lost, they still have to win today. Yes. Yes. I don't know if they had lost England. I think no matter what happened to draw or loss, I still think they had to beat Iran.
Starting point is 00:08:01 And Iran is, look, I know, you know, I tend to think I made fun of the Wales game because Wales is the size of Connecticut, you know. Iran's bigger geographically. Iran's bigger, okay. But they're good. Yeah. Well, they're, apparently they're good. Apparently, they better be good today or they better not return.
Starting point is 00:08:19 But them, the idea that all they have to do is have the game end in a draw to advance. I don't know anything about soccer, as I've said before. But I would imagine that it would change their complete strategy as it relates to the game. They only have to tie. Yes. So wouldn't they just take all, how many players are out there? Seriously. A lot.
Starting point is 00:08:47 There are a lot of players. A lot of players. Is it 11? I think it's 11, including the goalie, or maybe it's 11 plus one. But why wouldn't they just take all 11 players and put them across the goal? Well, I think the idea. And stack them on top of each other. I got to admit, I was listening to some analysis that said that Iran is not going to be aggressive to score.
Starting point is 00:09:12 They're going to play defensively. So the United States should force them to be aggressive. The United States should make Iran have the ball more and try to score and then make the best of their opportunities when they make mistakes. But you're right. This is very keen observation of yours. Thank you. I appreciate that.
Starting point is 00:09:33 Iran is going to have a strategy based on not losing, not necessarily winning. But with the 11 or 12, whatever the number is, if they just put them across the goal. I know that the goal's high, too. You could actually get on somebody's shoulders with like six and five or whatever, and that would probably take up the whole thing and just say, try to get it in. We're going to block the goal the entire game.
Starting point is 00:09:57 Would that be funny? Well, I mean, it's kind of dumb that all they have to do is draw to get in. I understand the idea of double element or the group stage stuff. But, of course, I'm kidding, I guess, to a certain degree, but it would be kind of hard to score if that happened. You know, the only time I like soccer. I like strategies. The only time I like soccer.
Starting point is 00:10:20 First ever done strategies. You ever see a movie called Victory? No. With Sylvester Stallone. It was directed by John Houston. It was about these POWs during World War II who played against the German national team during the war. Mm-hmm. And Sylvester Stallone was the goalie for the,
Starting point is 00:10:41 For the, you know, for the allies. Right. You know, the ally P-O-Ws. And they have all these great... Pele was in the movie. Oh, he was? Okay, there were a lot of great... Is Pele alive?
Starting point is 00:10:54 I don't know. I don't know. Isn't he probably the most famous athlete worldwide other than Ali of all time? Do you think that's true? Maybe Tylerwoods. I don't know about these guys like Messi. Messy might be or... Palo?
Starting point is 00:11:09 He's still alive. He's 82 years old. Okay. Messy and Ronaldo might be more. I watched Ronaldo yesterday for Portugal. I watched that game too. I watched some of that game. Yes.
Starting point is 00:11:18 Look at you. Well, I mean, it's on the TV and the cigar is still right now, you know? Yeah. You know, the UK... It's better than Fox business for crying out loud. You know, the UK U.S. game on Fridays, the most watched soccer game in the history of this country, on Fox, which then, which was the day after the Cowboys Giants on Fox on Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving Day was the most watched regular season NFL game in history. Now, all that tells you what?
Starting point is 00:11:50 I'm going to tell you what it tells you. Go ahead. That sports is the place if you're an advertiser. Of course. It's where you want to be on television. For, you know, what they still call over-the-air television. Yes. For broadcast television.
Starting point is 00:12:03 It is the only neighborhood you're interested in if you want your product to be advertised. That's it. Because for everything else, you don't watch on CBS. Fox, ABC or NBC. And then Saturday, the Michigan-Ohio State game, which was great. I was rooting for Michigan. I had Stanford Steve on the show yesterday for those that missed it. If you're interested in college football discussion, go back to yesterday's show.
Starting point is 00:12:30 That was the most watched college football game ever on Fox and the most watched college football game in terms of audience size in 11 years. I don't know what 11 years ago was. By the way, the Giants Cowboys game, the most watched regular season NFL game of all time. Of all time, that's actually pretty interesting when you consider way back in the day when you only had the networks, more people watching TV. Yes. You know what game it beat?
Starting point is 00:12:59 What? I think this is right. My producer Denton on radio told me that the Skins Cowboys game in 2016, where the Cowboys were 10 and 1, and Washington was 6'3 in 1 after they had beaten the Packers on Sunday night, that that game up until Thursday's game against the Giants was the most watched regular season game of all time. So there you go. We just went from soccer into TV ratings. What else do you want to talk about? How was your Thanksgiving? My Thanksgiving was good. It was very uneventful. I didn't watch any football because football is not watched in the Walton
Starting point is 00:13:32 household, you know, where I go for Thanksgiving. But I mean, the meals were good. I got to sit, You know, I got to admit, one thing that my in-laws have done, they have a gazebo out in the yard. And they put up a sign a long time ago called Laverill Island and Smoking Land. You know? Well, at least they actually had it made. It's made out of wood. Yeah. They actually had it made.
Starting point is 00:13:58 So it was very nice of them. Right. And the Laverro Island thing comes from a philosophy that I've preached over the years to people who have got been through, had issues at work, you know, is that as long as your island at work is okay, don't worry about other people's island. That's your attitude. Yeah, I mean, because, no, the idea is a lot of people sometimes have resentments about what other coworkers get.
Starting point is 00:14:26 Right. But if your island is fine, what do you care if the other guy has a better island? Your island is good. But you've had, I don't know if it's unique, but you've had a professional life where you've always been on, you know, Laverro Island. It has, no, no, no. I used to be a boss. You can't be a boss.
Starting point is 00:14:46 That's true. You've talked about that before. But for a long period of time, it's been, as it always is, it's been about you. Yes. I mean, you know, you, after you, everybody else comes first. But you've done your best to avoid kind of the, you know, the corporate environment. You don't want to be around people. You want to be out there on Laverro Island.
Starting point is 00:15:06 and if anybody needs you, they can reach out, but it's better if they don't. Absolutely. I'm hoping that works, too, in the afterlife as well. I'm hoping it's the same thing in the afterlife. I wish I could be left alone more often. This is the first time I've been in the studio in a long time, probably at least six months. And there's been a few changes. There's a new piece of furniture.
Starting point is 00:15:28 I don't think you had this wire shelf. Yes, I did. Did you? Yeah. Well, I don't recall seeing it. Yeah, that's been there since day one. And I'm looking at your book collection. Kevin has a collection on the shelf of 25 books.
Starting point is 00:15:41 You counted up already? Yes. Let me point out that there is not one Tom Levero book, not one in this pile of books. 25 books. I wrote 11 of them. He doesn't have one book. Send him to me and I'll put him there. You know, although you have three Feinstein books up there.
Starting point is 00:16:02 I see that. I should get rid of those. I should get rid of those. Send them to me and I'll put them up there. Oh, come on. Crying out. You know what I did when I moved? Remember, I moved about a year and a half ago.
Starting point is 00:16:14 Yes. And so we had to pack up the house. And there were lots of books in several different rooms on shelves. So I took all of the books and put them into these big bins. And then I was like, you know, I don't have anything in here other than a couple of, you know, I've got my Dundee Awards that you gave me. me, that's there. I've got a couple of bobbleheads, or I used to until they broke. Actually, see if there's a bobblehead over there next to you. You gave me a couple of bobbleheads. Is that a
Starting point is 00:16:44 Bryce Harper? Max Scherzer bobblehead. It's a real good one. By the way, how about the fact that Bryce Harper played with, needing Tommy John's surgery and played the way he did? Yeah. I mean, anyway, we switch around here. Send me your books. I don't have any in my house. If I had had any in my home, I would have put them up here. But I've never gone online, and I know that they're not expensive. Yes. They're pretty cheap. How much could I get one right now on Amazon?
Starting point is 00:17:12 What's the most expensive book right now of your books? Actually, I think the Negro League Encyclopedia is pretty expensive. What's that? Well, I don't know. You'd have to look it up. I've seen it for hundreds of dollars. Can I get an autographed copy? I'd like that one. I mean,
Starting point is 00:17:28 I'd say I'd give you one, but I don't have any more left. Okay. Well, maybe that's the problem is that they're just not available. So maybe. By the way, did you bring me my D.C. gray shirts? Yes, I've got the way here. I got it. It's in this backpack.
Starting point is 00:17:41 Thanks to Chris Spira. Chris is the best. Friend of the show and a D.C. Graze board member and general manager, I am finally delivering your D.C. Gray's swag. Okay, let me see. Here's your jersey. Your gray's jersey. Uh-huh.
Starting point is 00:17:57 By the way, I love everything they make. I love the logo. I love the looks. the colors. One hat. Love the hat. By the way, the hat just says DC on it, which is awesome. I like that.
Starting point is 00:18:08 Another hat, a camo hat. Awesome. Love it. What else you have for me? It's like Santa just arrived. Yes, a water bottle. Right? There's one thing I told you to get.
Starting point is 00:18:19 Let's see if you got it. I thought the ammo hat was the one. No, there's something else. Well, I didn't. That's it. No, there was one other thing I asked. No, that's it. That's it?
Starting point is 00:18:29 Here's a coffee cup. Okay, this is very nice of you. What else? Shorts. You know what? I've got a couple of D.C. Shorts at home. You know, 34's, hopefully.
Starting point is 00:18:43 Here's. Oh, wait a minute. I think you may have brought it. What? Is that the long-sleeve tea? This? Yeah. No, this is not a long-street tee.
Starting point is 00:18:52 Well, that's what I asked. I don't even know what this is. It's a handkerchief. Here's another pair of shorts. Okay. Chris, you're the best. Here's a baseball. All right, good.
Starting point is 00:19:02 Rubber baseball. Good. What else? Here's a ladder. Okay. And here's another rubber baseball. You got it. One more baseball and I'll juggle for you.
Starting point is 00:19:11 We have an audience here. So that's it. Okay. So I don't think we have a long-sleeved jersey. That was the only thing I asked you to get. But we may not have one. And a hat. We don't.
Starting point is 00:19:21 Yes, you do. You had one up on the website. It's fine. This is a lot of swag. I appreciate all of them. It is a lot. It's great. The only thing missing right now is one of your books.
Starting point is 00:19:30 to add to the bookshelf. I can imagine you and you were a kid at Christmas saying, well, where's the rest of it? No, I never did that. Where's the rest of it? No, I was so excited when I was a kid. Whatever was there, I'm easy when it comes to that stuff more times than not. Now, if I get something and I've asked for something and I've paid for something,
Starting point is 00:19:50 then I can be difficult. But I didn't pay for this. No, you didn't. No. Chris, thanks, you're the best. Want to talk about the game from Sunday? Why not? I was there.
Starting point is 00:19:58 We'll do that right after these words. a few of our sponsors. Pass. It's deflected in the air. It's Kendall. That was the big play of the game, the Kendall Fuller interception off the Duran Payne deflection at the end. If not, we might be having a conversation
Starting point is 00:20:29 about a lot of things this week. You know, I was thinking about this that, you know, the results of these games right now really drive the discussion the following week and it can be a wild swing on one play. Like if they had scored, if Duran Payne doesn't get his mitts on that play, deflect the ball and Kendall Fuller come down with an incredible interception,
Starting point is 00:20:52 cradling it before it hits the ground. And they score and they take the lead and Washington isn't able to answer and they lose 20 to 19. What's the conversation this week? Well, you can bury their playoff hopes at that point. No, you wouldn't be able to bury those. Well, I mean, I would. You wouldn't.
Starting point is 00:21:11 No. I would. I'd say that's it. It's over. What else would be part of the conversation this week? You must have something in mind. Well, yeah. Well, why don't you say it instead of making me guess? Well, I mean, people would have been very interested in the idea of benching Taylor Heineke and starting Carson Wentz against the Giants.
Starting point is 00:21:33 He threw for 34 yards in the second half. They had no passing game to speak of. they scored 19 points. He threw two touchdowns, by the way. He did. He did throw two touchdowns. And by the way, I gave him a B minus C plus as a grade. I didn't think he played that poorly.
Starting point is 00:21:51 I'm just saying the conversation had they lost, they did not get points at the end of the half when they should have when he threw that bad interception. He had another throw that could have been picked that the defender didn't come down with. By the way, let me be clear on something. I would have suggested that they continue to start Taylor Heineke. and it's because of what the other players think about the game,
Starting point is 00:22:14 about him specifically. But I'm just saying that if they had lost that game, one play away potentially from losing that game, there would have been a conversation, a big conversation about the quarterback with a lot of... Tommy, there's a conversation about the quarterback anyway. I know that, but there's a lot of dumb people out there. They talk about a lot of things.
Starting point is 00:22:32 Yeah, well, don't you think that would have been a much louder conversation this week? Yes. Okay. Yes, I think it. would have been. Yeah. Well, that's my point is that the results of these games really are driving the conversation about the team and the results, they're such a fine line. But with that said, let me be clear, even though I do think that in a loss, you should self-evaluate and you should think about, hey, how do we improve because that game could have gone the other way in this
Starting point is 00:23:07 particular situation, I just don't think that they get much more with Carson Wentz. No. No, he's, you know, he's not the guy on the back of his football card anymore. He's not that guy. He's a statue back there. He's got an arm. It's an arm. That's it. That's pretty much it. And he's not the preference of the players and coaches on the team. Now, I say the players on the team and I feel confident that that's true. I do think it's interesting to listen to Ron Rivera talk about Taylor Heineke each week. You know, like he was asked after the game and he said, well, you know, we got Taylor today. We got some good.
Starting point is 00:23:45 We got some bad. And I think without the winning, you know, even if they were close losses, even in some of the games where he's played well, I think he was very good in the Indianapolis game at the end. Without him playing at that level, they probably don't win that game. but the winning, the record, and we've talked about it a lot in the past. The quarterback is a very dependent position. Without the, you know, if instead of four and one, where does he four and one? He's five and one, the team's six and one.
Starting point is 00:24:20 If they were in the six games, just say three and three, let's just say they lost Sunday to Atlanta and they lost the Indianapolis game, he wouldn't be starting Sunday against the Giants and the Meadowlands. Maybe not. The passing offense is not good enough at this level. Here's a quote from Ron I found after they made the change to Taylor. Right.
Starting point is 00:24:44 One thing I've always done is whoever the starter is, I'm going to commit to them fully because I don't want them looking over their shoulder. I want them to understand this is the opportunity. He's not going to put quickly, pull Taylor Heineke. That's not going to happen. No, I'm just telling you that these results are, you know, which are fine line results with the exception of the Houston game, which they dominated.
Starting point is 00:25:11 This has been a team clearly, if you were objective in evaluating this team, they're six and one in their last seven, which is the best record in the NFL in the last seven weeks. They are being led clearly by their defense. I mean, it's not debatable. It's their defense that is leading them. It's their running game that's number two, and it's everything else, special teams and some big throws on occasion, some big third down conversions, two touchdown passes. One of them was to Brian Robinson, who did most of the work. The other throw to Bates was a good touchdown throw, that if they weren't five and one in his starts and they were three and three, then I think Wentz would be back out there. Even though that's not my preference right now. I want to make sure I'm being clear.
Starting point is 00:25:59 I'm not a big Taylor Heineke fan in terms of being your starting quarterback moving forward. I don't think that should be what they do, and I don't think they will do that. But I think he is right now the right person for the gig because the team believes in him, and there's some value in that. And by the way, he is more mobile, and he's able to make some plays. I do think if Carson Wentz came back with this defense, with this offensive line, which has improved significantly, with Brian Robinson, Jr., I think maybe with the same formula that Scott Turner is using, I think he could be every bit as good as Heineke. I'm not saying he's worse,
Starting point is 00:26:37 but I don't know that he would provide like this massive upside that a lot of people listening out there. You have to cart pieces of Carson Wentz off the field when they played 49ers. He'd have to literally take him off the field in pieces. Not if you're running the ball, 65, 35. They'd still. And when they face Michael Parsons again,
Starting point is 00:26:57 if it's a game that counts with Cowboys, again, take them off the field in pieces. All right. What did you think of the game Sunday? I did my whole thing yesterday. I thought it was the right formula. I think they followed the formula for success. I mean, their offensive line, I'm so impressed with the way they run block for these guys. I'm very impressed with Brian Robinson, the way he runs the ball.
Starting point is 00:27:23 And who's the, I'm drawing a blank on the guy they finally gave some running. William's. Yeah. I mean, he looked impressive as well. Mm-hmm. You know, so they really have a lot of options right now at running back that they keep throwing out of a team to keep that position fresh. I thought it was what I would have expected.
Starting point is 00:27:44 You know, and when you play games like this, I mean, look at the 80, I'm not comparing this to the Super Bowl 82 Redskins, but the Super Bowl 82 Redskins had a lot of games that could, if I recall. They did. Mark Mosley was the MVP. Okay. So, I mean, you know, sometimes teams win this way. Right.
Starting point is 00:28:04 You know, and this could be one of those teams. Again, I'm not saying they're a Super Bowl team. Okay. But right now, I think the goal is for reasonable people is to make the playoffs. And I think this team, the way they're playing, the way the game plans they're playing is built to possibly, to probably make the playoffs. And maybe even win a game. Who knows? I do too. I mean, I think that it is on both sides of the ball.
Starting point is 00:28:34 Like if you look at, you know, the last 20-something years, it's the defensive side of the ball is the best they've ever been on offense or defense. Number two would probably be the 2016 offense, which was really, really good. But they were so bad on defense and so bad on special teams. But this defense, which let me down a little bit on Sunday. Atlanta ran the ball against them. They ran the ball. But they made the plays when they needed to make the plays, including the last play.
Starting point is 00:29:05 The running attack took me back. I didn't expect that. And going to play to Giants and Sequan Barkley? And a running quarterback, a dual threat quarterback and Daniel Jones. That's a bit of a concern. Logan Paulson, and I mentioned this on the podcast yesterday, he was on with me on the over-the-weekend podcast that I did. he said to me, he said, this is the team that can run the ball against them.
Starting point is 00:29:30 They are really good up front. Their O-line is good. Arthur Smith, who was here, another guy who was here and is a head coach. Gibbs brought him in. Fred Smith's son. He really designs an excellent running game and it's dual threat with Marriota. And he goes, that's the key to the game. And I said, yeah, but I think they're going to stop the run.
Starting point is 00:29:50 They've stopped everybody. And he said, this would be the one team that might be able to run the ball against him. He was right. He was spot on. Yeah, and it's the reason Atlanta had a chance. It's the reason Atlanta's been good this year. I mean, you know, Washington held Atlanta to 13 points. Atlanta's been scoring.
Starting point is 00:30:04 Atlanta's average 23 points in game. Yeah, and they've had some big outputs against various teams. Yeah. But it was also one of those odd games that was very fast-moving, low-possession count. I think Washington had seven or eight possessions. Atlanta had eight. They were running the ball. There weren't a lot of penalties. So the game was a quick game.
Starting point is 00:30:24 You know, they only... Actually, actually, the way this is the way this team plays of late. Yeah. Their games are shorter than the typical games we've dealt with in the past. I mentioned yesterday. I don't think I've ever seen this, but I looked at my watch when they got to the two-minute warning in the first half.
Starting point is 00:30:40 It was 159 p.m. It was pre-2 o'clock for a two-minute warning. But anyway, I wanted to, I think that right now in the NFC, I still think that the 49ers are my pick. I think they're the best all-around team, and I would also put them in the category of the best coached team. I think Dallas and Philadelphia, Philadelphia the other night was impressive, but they also got run on.
Starting point is 00:31:09 Minnesota, as much as I love cousins, I think they are terrible defensively against the pass. And Washington almost beat them. They're literally a whisker away, probably a Taylor Heineke interception away from having a seven-game win streak right now. I don't think there's any But there's no great quarterbacks You're not in an NFC
Starting point is 00:31:30 The last couple of years with Aaron Rogers and Tom Brady Brady is going to be in the playoffs, maybe Rogers isn't No Drew Breeze from a couple of years ago Isn't going to be in the postseason All the studs that quarterback are in the AFC
Starting point is 00:31:42 They are Yeah And so if they get there Which I think they will I think they can win a game too Yeah When you run the football and play defense Like they do
Starting point is 00:31:51 You've got a chance You just can't beat yourself Right. That's what you can't beat yourself. And they have not done that. They are over the last, I don't know if people saw this. Let me pull it up real quickly because I think it was Ben or Nikki that had this. It was Ben.
Starting point is 00:32:12 Over the last, during this winning streak, Washington A has the best record in the NFL at 6 and 1. They've got the number one turnover margin during the. this stretch. I mean, you want to look at something that usually stands the test of time in terms of a traditional statistic. It's turnover margin. And they're plus seven. The actual preaches that. Plus seven, they're first in the league in turnover margin. Time of possession. They're second in the league during this win streak. Points allowed. They're third in the league. Yards allowed their third in the league. Penalties, they're fifth in the fewest penalties. And three and out drives in terms of a percentage of drives, three and outs,
Starting point is 00:32:53 fourth in the league with the fourth fewest. By the way, that's important when you have a good defense that even if your offense isn't dynamic and great, don't go three and out and punt it right back. You don't want to put the defense right back on the field. You know, make a first down or two and then flip the field and make the other team go a long way. And they've done all those things exceptionally well.
Starting point is 00:33:14 I wanted to read this tweet from Manny who tweeted me and you, I think. Does anyone remember when Kevin wanted to trade five first-round picks and Chase Young for Russell Wilson? And I laughed because, first of all, I did want to trade picks and Chase Young for Aaron Rogers and Deshawn Watson before all the Watson stuff.
Starting point is 00:33:42 Those are the two quarterbacks. Not five. The truth will do, Manny. I did want to trade some picks, not Chase Young. I said I would trade picks and I would probably trade another player for Russell Wilson. Not five first round picks. But can you imagine if they had pulled off the trade for Russell Wilson? Oh my gosh.
Starting point is 00:34:01 And he played here like he's been playing in Denver because the two teams mirror each other. Great defenses, lots of weapons on offense. I think the coaching staff in Denver with the first year guy Nathaniel Hackett's been a problem for them. But can you imagine if they had traded, you know, what, what, uh, what, what, uh, what, what, Denver traded and then signed him to that contract extension, it would have been so Washington. What they did alone is bad enough, you know, trading three draft picks and paying this guy $28 million. Yeah, but for one year. But it's nothing compared to what the damage that would have been done if they had Russell Wilson on board.
Starting point is 00:34:38 Did you see the Denver defense yelling at Wilson? They can't stand. And let's, I didn't see that coming. No, no. Okay. Now, you know, because I've talked to you about this. I have some people who've told me in recent years that Russell Wilson has been a major diva. I've heard that.
Starting point is 00:34:55 Yeah. And, you know, the story that was written by that ESPN reporter before the season started about the saga in Seattle, you realize just how disliked he was. By management, by the coaching staff, by other players. They tried to trade them. I mean, in 2017, what was Mayfield? In 2017, they tried to trade him to Cleaver. one for the number one overall pick right in the middle of the heyday of Russell Wilson. And they wanted him out.
Starting point is 00:35:25 And we didn't know that until this story. So somebody then followed up on this tweet saying, Sheehan, right now, would you trade Taylor Heineke for Russell Wilson straight up? I think I would still. No. I think I would. No, no, no, no, no. I don't know where that voice is coming out of your head.
Starting point is 00:35:48 Straight up? No. No, no, because you're... I don't want his contract. I don't want his contract. I don't want that. So maybe that would prevent me from doing it. Well, yeah, that comes with it.
Starting point is 00:35:59 It's still Russell Wilson. Yeah, I know that. But you're going 180 degrees from being the guy you want to drink with that you want your daughter to marry. I know. To this other guy who everyone hates him. Well, Sierra is somebody's daughter. Huh? Sear is somebody's daughter.
Starting point is 00:36:18 Okay. I'm just pointing out that, no, the exact, the Heinecke effect would be the exact opposite with the Wilson effect. So, no. No, that's absurd. Well, it's going to be interesting to see what Denver does with Russell Wilson at the end of this. This has been a disaster. My prediction, they fire Nathaniel Hackett, and they blame it on him. Of course.
Starting point is 00:36:42 Year one. The other really interesting thing in this offseason is going to be Aaron Rogers. and if he's available. And if he would be available for a team that just needs a high-level quarterback to be a legitimate Super Bowl contender, which you could make the case, Washington will be in the off-season. You know, that's one of the things that they've done here and Rivera has done here this year is, I remember last off-season, I mean, people held their nose about the idea of being traded to Washington. Right.
Starting point is 00:37:15 Okay. if this scenario continues. The winning. The winning. And maybe a playoff. And maybe a playoff spot. It changes the whole outlook, I think, for players who might want to come here. Does it change it for agents?
Starting point is 00:37:32 If there's a new owner, of course it does. If there's a new owner, absolutely. That could be a new owner by then. Well, that's the wild card. If there's a new owner, it makes, you know, then it's a different place. Yeah, absolutely. Because it's the agents as much as anybody else that have said, no, you don't want to go there. Right. Ron Rivera, I think, and I think you think this because I read your column, Ron Rivera gets a lot of credit for what's going on right now.
Starting point is 00:37:54 Absolutely. I mean, I've been pretty hard on him in the past. And like I wrote my column in the lead, I still don't know how good of a football coach he is. But when it comes to leadership and changing the tenure of the football team, I give him high grades for that. I mean, players don't quit who play for Ron Rivera. Teams don't fall apart when they're in trouble under Ron Rivera. And, I mean, they listen to him. They clearly listen to his messages that are out there. I think Del Rio, the lunatic, gets some credit for it as well. Players love him.
Starting point is 00:38:33 Yes, I know. So, yeah, in my column, I wrote that, I don't think that the distance, the separation between the, the dysfunction and the success has been this great in recent years as it is right now. I think that's true. I mean, I, you know, and, you know, let me just add to that that there isn't a major star player for the owner to sort of saddle up next to and disrupt things. so maybe the owner, including, you know, not that Tanya ever did this before, but it's, you know, I'm sure that they're excited about this run, but remember in 2012, you know, Robert became his best friend. Yes.
Starting point is 00:39:24 You know, which became very disruptive to the whole thing. Extremely disruptive. Right. So I think when you wrote that the distance between one side of the building and the other, the other being the football locker room, that we haven't seen this much of a divide, is true. there's this much of a separation and I give Ron Rivera a lot of credit for them. Now, the other side of the building, well, that's worth a conversation.
Starting point is 00:39:49 I promised everybody yesterday that I would save the Sean Taylor whatever that thing was, a conversation for when Tommy was on. So we'll get to that right after these words from a few of our sponsors. This final segment brought to you by two sponsors. The first is MyBooky.
Starting point is 00:40:12 Go to MyBooky.ag. Use my promo code, Kevin, D.C., They'll match your first deposit, dollar for dollar, all the way up to a thousand bucks. Tommy, just so you know, the odds today on the Iran-USA matchup, USA's plus 100. Iran is plus 295, but the odds of a draw are plus 236. So that's that. But I wanted to mention one other thing, because I talked about this morning on radio. because when it comes to the Washington football team,
Starting point is 00:40:45 aka the commanders, they're getting so much respect right now from the odds makers. Right now on my bookie and almost everywhere else, Washington is now a two and a half point road favorite Sunday in the Meadowlands against the Giants. This game a month ago, the Giants would have been a three, three and a half four point favorite. Washington is a two and a half point favorite. Now, a lot of you are like, okay, whatever, she and they're going to play the game. Of course they're going to play the game.
Starting point is 00:41:15 This doesn't mean anything. But what it is reflective of is guys with really sharp opinions who's, by the way, livelihoods depend on creating the proper point spreads. They are giving Washington now a lot of credit. I think it's the defense. I think it's the matchup, too, against the Giants where the Giants have to run the football. and Washington's an outstanding run defensive team. You know, Washington was not a big favorite over Atlanta. They went off as like a three and a half point favorite over Atlanta at home on Sunday.
Starting point is 00:41:50 But they love this matchup against the Giants from a Washington perspective. And they like Washington in general. There are two and a half point favorite. That means Washington now will have been favored. Houston, Atlanta. The Giants, right now, you know, the Giants. right now, you know, the Giants at home, that they're favored on the road. They'll be favored in four straight games.
Starting point is 00:42:15 I don't think that's happened now since 2016. I think it's been six years since Washington's been a favorite in four consecutive games. And that does speak to the perception of what they're doing here. The odds makers who have a very sharp view of this, they like what they're seeing in Washington. They also like the matchup against the Giants. public really liking the Giants this week as an underdog at home. You know, the Giants have, by the way, Washington, then Philadelphia, and then Washington. Washington has Giants buy week and then the Giants.
Starting point is 00:42:52 So there's some benefit there. Now, the Giants are coming off kind of the quasi-by because they played on Thanksgiving Day. Right. So they've had some rest, and they've had some injured players. We'll see how healthy they are during the course of the week. But go to my bookie.ag for all of your sports betting needs. Use my promo code, Kevin, D.C. How about our good friends at Shelley's back room where, you know, you can go watch the World Cup game today?
Starting point is 00:43:17 It's a perfect place to go watch the World Cup. You know, I have a nice cigar, a nice glass of whiskey from the great collection of whiskeys that they've got available there. I was there Sunday night after the Commander's game like I usually do. I always go to Shelly's after Commander's game. I watched part of the Sunday night football game. There was a great crowd there. Monday night. No, I watched the Sunday night game.
Starting point is 00:43:41 I watched the Sunday night game. Packers, Eagles game? Yeah. You know, and all the TVs were on the game. And there were some boisterous Packers and Eagles fans there, you know, who were cheering. I mean, it's that kind of place. It's the kind of place where if you want to see, you know, your team play, you can cheer. And you're not going to get beat up for cheering.
Starting point is 00:44:03 It's a welcome atmosphere. Is it a watch party atmosphere? Is it a watch party atmosphere? No, it's not exactly a watch party. I mean, are you moving all those 20-somethings from the DuPont Circle area into Shelley's backroom? That's where they should be. Right. That's where they should be.
Starting point is 00:44:21 Then they could mature a little bit. Right. You know, if they came to shelly's. I highly recommend it. You'll find it at 1331 F Street Northwest. Lots. They've got two rooms, lots of seating. some very comfortable couches and big overstuffed chairs that you can sit in and smoke your cigar and watch the game.
Starting point is 00:44:41 And again, it's my home away from home. And it's very holiday-esque this time of year as well. Yes, it is. And it's the fact it's where I met John, one of our guests here today, who bid on being here for the podcast. He was here. He was at the... That's where I met John. Yes, at the D.C. Gray Cigar Fundraiser that Shelley's graciously hosts.
Starting point is 00:45:02 Shelly's is a great place to host your events as well, I might want to point out. All right, Shelley's backroom, 13th and F Streets Northwest. So before we get to the Sean Taylor stuff, which we'll get to and finish up the show with, I just wanted to mention two things. Number one, the Wizards won last night, 142 to 127 over Minnesota. They scored 77 points in the first half. Porzingis had 29 in the first half on his way to a career high, 41. The odds of him staying healthy all year, Tommy, are probably not high because he's never really played a full season.
Starting point is 00:45:39 But so far, he's only missed one game. If he stays healthy and plays 75 plus, he's really, he's good. He's really good. They still can't play defense. They didn't last night. That's for sure. He is a match-up nightmare. You forget if you haven't paid attention to the NBA, just how good.
Starting point is 00:46:02 He is at seven foot three. He's impossible to check. I think Beal after the game said what we really have to do. This is Beal, you know, who just signed the Max Max, of all Maxes, said we just have to keep getting him the ball. And Beal played well. They've got a good team. They're an entertaining team to watch. I think they've got a chance to finish in the top six this year.
Starting point is 00:46:25 They're an entertaining team in November. I know. Thank you. Now we're in a hockey situation now. with this team. Wake me up in April. By the way, the caps are not doing very well. No, they're not. You know? The other thing I wanted to mention real quickly before we get to the Sean Taylor stuff is I watched
Starting point is 00:46:42 the Monday night game last night, the Steelers Colts. I kind of liked the Steelers. I didn't play them. I had four people reach out to me. Who do you like tonight? Who are you going to play? Ah, maybe I'll play the Steelers. I didn't, of course. Good Smeltest weekend this weekend, this weekend, 9, 5, and 1. Kenny Pickett, I've talked about him a couple of times already this year. I think the Steelers got it right with him. him. It's really hard to tell at this point, these young quarterbacks. And look, Gino Smith is a real
Starting point is 00:47:08 lesson in having a definitive opinion about a quarterback, two, three, four, five, six, seven years into his career. Look at the year he's having. But Kenny Pickett, who it was hand size. It was all about his hand size before the draft. He looks the part to me. And I thought he played really well last night. And Mike Tomlin after the game said, I think the two things you want to hear your coach say about a young starting quarterback. He is really smart and he is one tough, gritty competitor. I think they like him. They knew what they were getting at him. Remember, because they shared the facility with Pitt. And so they knew what they, they knew a lot about him. They could talk to almost anybody about him. He was the only quarterback taken in the first round. And I think they got it right
Starting point is 00:47:55 with him. They definitely got it right with Pickens, the receiver. The game last night, people are hammering Jeff Saturday in his third game as a head coach for the way he managed the clock at the end of the game. And they were down 2417 and Matt Ryan was moving him down the field. And Matt Ryan had a scramble with like 55 seconds roughly left that left them like three yards short of the first down. First of all, Matt Ryan, you got to go get the first down. He had an opportunity to get it. But he went into the slide a little bit early. So then they had third and three and they didn't call a timeout and they had three timeouts. So they were killing him for this.
Starting point is 00:48:32 And the only thing I would say, and I saw all of your tweets, like, aren't you going to kill Jeff Saturday? Saturday said afterwards and so did Matt Ryan. And even Troy Aitman said this on the broadcast. Sometimes, you know, you have a defense reeling a little bit and calling that time out that you probably should call to save time, you let the defense off the hook instead of getting the first down when they're tired and they're reeling a little bit.
Starting point is 00:48:59 And we were planning on hopefully getting the first down on third down against the defense that we thought was vulnerable in the moment and then hitting our first timeout. The problem with that is they didn't get the first down. They got stopped. And then they called a timeout and they had the fourth and three, which I thought was pass interference. I don't know what they were looking at. So you may disagree with his reasoning, but he didn't do it because he was thoughtless. He had a plan.
Starting point is 00:49:24 I think that they, yes. I think that, like he said, we still had, and they did. They had, you know, if they get the first down, they're like 30 seconds left, and now they're down to two timeouts, and they would have been at, what yard line would they were? They would have been at like the Pittsburgh 22 yard line. That's plenty of time. You'd rather have 40-something seconds left if you would call the timeout. The other thing I would have been thinking about is your 37-year-old quarterback just ran 14 yards,
Starting point is 00:49:54 and he was out of breath. Yeah. But all he had to do was hand. the ball off. But I think sometimes you're absolutely convinced that they just totally fucked it up, you know, in that moment. And I don't think he
Starting point is 00:50:06 intentionally did. I think he was thinking their best opportunity to get the first down was to run the play quickly against a Pittsburgh defense that was kind of scrambling. Rather than calling the time out and allowing them to catch breath and set up the defense
Starting point is 00:50:22 and call the defense they wanted. Anyway, I like Pickett. I think Pickett looks good. All right, let's get to the Sean Taylor thing. I'll let you go first. I forgot that I didn't talk about it on the podcast, but I've spent two days talking about it on radio. So for those that don't know what we're talking about, okay, the team on Sunday before the game, once again decided that they were going to do something for Sean Taylor. This time, it was to recognize the 15-year anniversary of his passing, which, which was November 27th, 2007.
Starting point is 00:50:59 They put out a press release, and I went back in Reddit, and it said one of the honoring of Sean Taylor 15th year anniversary events will be what they called a key activation. I mean, it's like consultant language. I can just, this is what we're doing, a key activation to include the reveal of the Sean Taylor Memorial installation. We're putting up, you know, putting up a mannequin. and in a case, you know, glass thing.
Starting point is 00:51:29 Anyway, they did not promise or did not say, and this is my point here, that they were going to unveil some sort of statue. So I didn't think they were doing a statue going in. I didn't know what to expect. I'll get to my thoughts in a moment. What were yours? Well, they didn't say statute. That's correct.
Starting point is 00:51:48 But the expectation, I mean, the fact that they had a year to do this. and six months ago they announced that they were going to be doing this. So they had six months to prepare for it in addition to the six months before that. I think people had expectations that it would be something dramatic. You know? Yeah. It would be something of note. And the first thing that comes to mind is a statute, you know?
Starting point is 00:52:17 So I think people sort of, they had raised the expectations. The team did. They had raised the expectations that this was going to be something important. And it wasn't. It was literally, like I wrote, something an intern could have put together a dix on an afternoon. It really was. I mean, you know, and for all those people, I think you're included in this, and I don't mean to, you know, to basically disrespect you here.
Starting point is 00:52:47 Disrespect me all you want. You've done it many times in the past. What would stop you today, the fact that we've got an audience? Yeah. Okay. But this notion that as long as the family is okay with it, then it's okay. I mean, you think they did this for the family? Do you think they had this for the family?
Starting point is 00:53:05 One thing, they did this because it's the only cover that the owner has left. It's the only area where the owner can't get criticized and he still managed to screw that. Right. Okay. So that's the main reason why it. But the secondary reason was for the fans. That's why they did. this. I mean, the family isn't going to have to walk by this display every Sunday for home games.
Starting point is 00:53:30 The fans are, and they're going to be reminded every Sunday what a screw up the team is. So, you know, if the family, if it's so important to you that the family likes it, then why not give them the option of letting them take it with them? Okay? Let them take it home with them, okay? You know, that way people don't have to look at it anymore. Yeah. You know? So, I mean, it was just, but it was, if it was piling on, it's only piling on because you expect the worst out of them. They have earned every bit of the over-the-top criticisms that they get about everything. It's a reputation that they have built for themselves. And for Jason Wright, who's supposed to be in charge of this stuff as the team president.
Starting point is 00:54:22 Embarrassment. It's really, it's another embarrassment. I would say to you, and I maintain that the only thing that Jason Wright has done of note that fans care about is he's not Brutes Allen. Other than that, he's really had no impact. People say, you know, if the family was okay with it, was the family okay with their photo being taken and a bunch of, bunch of porty potty last year? Right. I mean, are they going to dig them up again five years from now, you know, and do this all over? again. Let them be, you know, it was, it was a mannequin.
Starting point is 00:54:58 So, first of all, let me just address, you know, you, because I put out a tweet. You're referencing my tweet during the game. It really was kind of misinterpreted. And I, and I've, you know, those that have listened to me on radio, and I'm going to, I'm going to share what I've said here with you as well. Really, what I was saying and what I meant to say is, I didn't have any expectation that they would get this right. So I don't really care whether they got this right or wrong. I was expecting them to screw it up as they do everything. And at that point, it's like we're at halftime.
Starting point is 00:55:32 If the family's okay with it, fine. Let's move on. But there is something that piss me off about it, which I'm going to get to here in a moment. First of all, it really is amazing to me that they continue to just completely butcher all of these things. Now, it's one thing last year when they butchered the Sean Taylor retirement jersey. They came up with that idea, basically, at the last minute, to cover up whatever the investigation of the week was. The emails were going on at that time, right? I mean, it's hard to keep track of whatever
Starting point is 00:56:06 it was. And it was obvious that this was kind of, you know, a last second idea and they rushed it and you ended up with, you know, just an utter embarrassment of, you know, the family taking the picture in front of the porta potty's, Patrick Mahomes' brother doing a TikTok video right there on the Sean Taylor thing on the field. The whole thing was just embarrassing. And you would think that, and remember I told you over the summer, I said, you watch, you're going to do a bunch of Sean Taylor things again this year with all of these other investigations because that's their go-to move, which is, you know, but to have the situation they had last fall with the Jersey retirement and then to do it again is just such an indictment on their intellect.
Starting point is 00:56:54 And it's, I use the John McKay. John McKay is one of my favorite all-time quotes from the NFL. Remember when he took over the Buccaneers in 76 after coming from S.C. And somebody said, you know, what did you think of your team's execution today? And he said, I'm in favor of it. You know, and he had all those different lines. And like to me, you know, in talking about sort of the team, you know, would say something like, you know, they don't plan very well, but they make up for it with
Starting point is 00:57:21 terrible execution, you know, that's what they've been. Like, they don't plan it. You know, the Take Command website recently, the 90th year anniversary with the extra 10, I said to you, they need like an event planner, like a full-time event planner, somebody that does this, that will get every, you know, detail, you know, like at 1149, we're going to have the players line up, they're going to be down there and that 11-fif, they just, it's all winging it. You know, this really reeked of on Thanksgiving,
Starting point is 00:57:56 somebody picked up the phone and said, hey, by the way, Sunday's the day we're doing this Sean Taylor thing. Go to Dick's. Go fish out a couple of jerseys from the training camp bin and get some wires. See how Dix does it in their display case. It's art, I guess, but in art's subjective, but this was
Starting point is 00:58:14 just an embarrassment. Again, I didn't expect a statue. But it was just disappointing on every level. And I talked to, I talked to people who were there. I talked to people who were former players and close to Sean. Nobody, nobody thought this was well done. Now, the family is saying all of the right things, which they kind of did after the, you know, rushed situation a year ago. I have no idea how they really feel. It is important to me how they really feel, but I agree with you, and this isn't what I meant with my tweet. It's more than just the family. You know, this thing's done for the fan base as well.
Starting point is 00:58:52 And while I was not really, you know, as this was going on Sunday morning, my three boys, they're all like, you know, Dad, you got to see this. They're all home. Look what they did. They completely messed it up again. They're laughing hysterically at it. And I'm like, I just didn't expect them to do anything first class. I mean, this is a low-rent group.
Starting point is 00:59:15 It doesn't matter who's in the group. And, you know, it's gone through all of the iterations of, you know, the first 10 years with Vinny and everybody else. And then the Mike years with Bruce and Jay with Bruce and Brian Lafamina for, you know, less than a year. Don't rent. Don't buy rent Lafamina. And now Jason Wright, who every single thing he touches right now isn't working out. And, you know, they've messed everything up. Every big event. It's all self-inflicted damage, too.
Starting point is 00:59:46 That's the irony of it. Some of these things they don't even have to do, and that brings me to this. And I know how the younger generation of fans revere Sean. And by the way, I was a big Sean Taylor fan, too. I love that position. You know, some of my favorite players are some of the greatest safeties that I've ever played. Kenny Easley is one of my all-time favorite players. Ken Houston, who is the greatest safety in the history of this franchise.
Starting point is 01:00:14 Sean may have become that, but Ken Houston was the greatest safety to play for this franchise. But I know what he meant to a certain, I think age group of fans. He's what they have, you know. And he was a spectacular player who in 2007 had already become a really, really good to great safety. That was his year. That was his breakout year. He had that game against Green Bay. And I do think that what was to come was going to be Hall of Fame.
Starting point is 01:00:46 I do. I mean, I don't think I've ever seen a six-foot-three, 235, 240-pound man run and hit the way he did. I mean, there are very few safeties in the history of the game that could cover that much ground at that size that he did. So I enjoyed him as a player. I really didn't. I'll never forget 15 years ago that whole week.
Starting point is 01:01:09 I mean, you know, I was on the air for three. straight days, basically 18 hours a day. I remember Todd Castleberry calling me at 4.30 in the morning saying he died. And it was the night before that we went to bed thinking he was going to make it. Remember? And I was very upset and moved by it. With all of that
Starting point is 01:01:26 said, enough of Sean Taylor. Enough. Okay? There are multiple reasons that I feel this way. Number one is, whenever they do Sean Taylor, it's an embarrassment. They can't do anything right. They've embarrassed him with these. It
Starting point is 01:01:42 occasions enough already. Number two is this is their go-to move. I mean, this is the owner's go-to move to basically divert attention away from whatever the investigation of the week is. And there wasn't anything last week, but, you know, they keep going to Sean. Because Sean, and the way that week was handled by the owner, is the one thing since he's owned this team that he didn't fuck up. Right.
Starting point is 01:02:09 he was first-rate classy that week. He didn't speak. But every player during that week said the owner was phenomenal during that tragic week. But here's the point that I really want to make. And this is the point I made last year when they retired is Jersey. And I know this angers people when I say this. But Sean's being honored now so many times. it's not the proper order for this franchise.
Starting point is 01:02:42 Sean's being placed and honored in places that's inappropriate from an order standpoint. This franchise had winning teams, Hall of Fame players and coaches that should have been honored far before Sean. And I said this with the Jersey retirement. I don't have a problem. Some people do. Some people think his jersey shouldn't have been retired. I don't have a problem with his jersey being retired. I think he's a special exception.
Starting point is 01:03:11 And by the way, I think it's the owner's prerogative because of the relationship he had with him and the fact that he's, you know, the most talented player along with Trent Williams, and they left him off the first, you know, added 10 list. And then had to put him back on there. But I, Bobby Mitchell, when they decided to retire jerseys,
Starting point is 01:03:30 finally, after Sammy Boz was the only one and there were protected jerseys, Bobby Mitchell's was appropriately the next jersey that was retired. Absolutely. Sean Taylor should not have been the third jersey retired. No. Period. No.
Starting point is 01:03:43 Okay. Sunny Jurgensen, art monk, Daryl Green, Charlie, Taylor, John Riggins. And if we're talking about like building museums or memorials, memorials different, okay, I understand that. But statues because there was a, there's only one person you build a statue to. And that is Joe Gibbs, period. not Sean Taylor. And I'm saying that with the understanding that some of you believe that they should continue to do Sean Taylor things. I don't. I don't think they should do Sean Taylor again. I'm not saying
Starting point is 01:04:16 that every few years, you know, on the 20-year anniversary of his death or, you know, at another point when we're recognizing the greatest. I'm not talking about excluding him. I'm talking about what they've been doing with him over the last year. And it's not just the Jersey retirement. They also did the thing on the club level with him. They did this thing with them. They get them all wrong. They embarrass themselves and him, and whether the family will admit it or not,
Starting point is 01:04:42 you know, and it's probably just because they're a nice group of people. And I saw the daughter was moved by the soccer cleats because apparently that was a big deal for him. You know, so I understand all that. I don't think soccer cleats with World Cup on them were a particular big deal. She apparently
Starting point is 01:04:58 thinks otherwise, and whatever. It's not that that angers me. me because it was a debacle the other day. But I expected that. It is that they keep going to this. Stop it. Stop. I don't want any more Sean Taylor events.
Starting point is 01:05:15 Let's put them on hold for a while. Let's focus on getting Sonny Jorgensen's Jersey retirement, which happens against the Cowboys and the season finale this year. Let's not screw this up. Yeah. Let's focus on getting this right because for a lot more, many more. people in the fan base or what used to be the fan base, this is very important that they get, that Sonny's jersey should have been after Bobby Mitchell's. And then you should have gone to
Starting point is 01:05:44 Daryl or Art or John Riggins or Charlie Taylor. Okay. So these are the things that, like, for me, I'm not being disrespectful to his memory because I was a Sean Taylor fan as well. And I recognize how important he is to a lot of you. But this is an organization that before Sean got here and before Dan and Tanya arrived, one, they had two championships and three Super Bowls. They were classy. They were smart. It's been the opposite since then. You know, Sean, in the memories he provided, and by the way, the other thing I said is, if you were going to create, like in the creative meeting, who said this was okay? Well, they didn't have a creative meeting, probably. because if anybody in the organization knew anything about the organization, which they don't,
Starting point is 01:06:36 and you know anything about Sean Taylor, you would have captured him maybe in one of those moments. Like when he dove into the end zone and the season finale in 2005 in Philadelphia in the game they had to win to clinch a playoff berth, and he picked up the fumble and ran it back for a touchdown and dove from the two-yard line into the end zone. Like have something with him that says Sean Taylor instead of this faceless, mannequin, whatever. Beyond that, it's, this organization produced for every memory of the last 25 years, there were 10, 10 to 1 before Sean Taylor arrived and before Dan Snyder owned this team. Winning memories, Hall of Famers, legendary plays, legendary games. I mean, it's a fraction of what it was in terms of the memories that this group has provided.
Starting point is 01:07:29 I don't mind Sean's jersey being retired. I think it was out of order. I do mind them continuing to go to Sean and fuck it up every time they do it. And, you know, to your point, you know, until the single biggest story still, and the seven and five is great, and the six and one in the last seven weeks is awesome. And by the way, it's good for us. And the fact that I think they actually are a good team, and I give Ron Rivera all the credit for that. And he's, as you said, he's the first in a long time that separated this football thing from the incompetence of the other side of the building.
Starting point is 01:08:07 But still, the number one story for all of us is Dan selling the team. That's the thing that matters more than anything else. Because if he doesn't, and I think he is, you know, hopefully he's going to and he gets that done, we're going to continue to have days like we had on Sunday. And by the way, there will be two more Sean Taylor events. you know, next year that they'll screw up. Hopefully, you get a new owner in here, and they recognize that there was, like, actually really good football and championship football
Starting point is 01:08:39 with Hall of Famers played. And I do think Sean was on his way to a Hall of Fame career. I do. You know, not everybody does. I actually thought he was great that year on his way to all-time great. But enough already, you know, and I think maybe, you know,
Starting point is 01:08:56 I don't want to, I have no idea, what the family thinks. I know what some of his former teammates think, and they were not pleased with what happened Sunday. They're pleased that, you know, there was a recognition of the day and the sadness of that day 15 years ago. But I think we've done Sean enough now. Yes. Okay, let's focus now on what the franchise was before Snyder got here, which includes all of the really good things, winning championships, Hall of Famers. Let's get Sunny right. and then next year, let's get Charlie Taylor's jersey retired or Riggos or Art Monks or Daryl Greens. And, you know, and by the way, do maybe like one of these things a year, you know.
Starting point is 01:09:40 The whole thing, I just can't believe how they continue. How can you, after a year in what happened last year, they had Pat Mahomes' brother doing a TikTok stomping all over. That's the unbelievable part is that they screwed this up so bad last year to manage to do. do this? I mean, that's what people, I think people expected, like, a reasonable do-over. I didn't. Okay. I mean, why would you expect them to get this right? I know.
Starting point is 01:10:09 They don't have people, they, I mean, any of these events, and I would, I would say to them right now, if you're putting the sunny day together against Dallas on January 8th or whenever that is, if you're going to put that together at the last second, don't. hire somebody, somebody who's a true event planner, somebody who really understands putting an event logistically together, make sure you don't screw Sunny up. Yeah. Because he, Sean was special in a lot of ways, okay, and is memorable.
Starting point is 01:10:44 Sunny's an all-time franchise legend, legend. On the field and in the broadcast booth. Right. For generations who never saw him play, he's still a very important figure. That's right. And there are others to come. Art, Darrell, Charlie Taylor, who should be in there.
Starting point is 01:11:03 Anyway, what else you got for me today? That's all I got for you, boss. It's nice having an audience. It was. Great to see you again. It's great to see you again, too, in person. I'll be back tomorrow, I think, with Cooley and a film breakdown of the game on Sunday. Courtney and John English.
Starting point is 01:11:21 It was great to have you guys in here today. Was it worth it? It was. No, it wasn't. Back tomorrow with Cooley.
