The Kevin Sheehan Show - Is The Season Over?
Episode Date: September 22, 2026Kevin and Thom today with plenty on the Jayden Daniels injury including reacting to an orthopedic surgeon's best guess on what's next as told to Kevin on his radio show. Thom weighed in on the game fo...r the first time expressing his belief that Jayden playing Superman with a limited roster was going to be too much of a burden/risk this season even though the injury in Dallas was flukish. Is the Commanders' season over? The guys answered and discussed that along with Jackson Dart's injury, the wild ending to Saturday's NC State-Vanderbilt game, and a new Maryland Football PR policy not allowing follow-up questions for the head coach, Mike Locksley. You don't want it.
You don't need it, but you're going to get it anyway.
The Kevin Sheehan Show.
Here's Kevin.
Tommy's here.
I am here.
The show's presenting sponsor is always Window Nation.
If you need new Windows, 86690 Nation, Windonation.

Mention my name and Window Nation will schedule a fast, free in-home estimate.
We're going to get Tommy's reaction to Sunday in Dallas.
here in the opening segment.
I do want to mention real quickly that I had Tommy an orthopedic surgeon,
his name's Dr. Harris Solomon, a Bethesda orthopedic surgeon that deals with the elbow.
He's actually a Walt Whitman in Bethesda, Maryland graduate as I.
We both went to the same high school, not the same graduating class.
But I had him on radio and he's worth the listen.
The Team 980.com, hour three, the 12 noon segment he was on.
And let me just kind of cut to the chase.
He believes that the injury at this point to the elbow,
given that it's happened at least twice,
and maybe it happened in Minnesota as well
when it was reported that he re-injured the elbow.
They didn't say it was dislocated.
He thinks that A, the team handled it,
the right way back
last November after the
Seattle game because the
recurrence rate is very
low and the operation
rate is very, very
rare as well. You typically
just put it back into the socket, you
let it heal and it usually
doesn't happen again.
But he said now that we've had
at least two instances
of an elbow
dislocation, he believes
what they're discussing right now.
are surgical options, and that more likely than not, that's the way the team and Jaden's team will go,
because now he's more susceptible to it since it's happened at least two times that we know of,
maybe three if you count the Minnesota game.
And yes, he could wear a brace and limit the opportunity to do it again.
but if he did it again, the surgery becomes, you know, there's more risk if it happens again
with the outcome of a surgery, which now the prognosis would be very good.
So he thinks there's going to be a surgery and he's essentially going to miss the rest of the season.
That's one doctor, one orthopedic surgeon, and he was very good as a guest.
I would urge you guys to listen to it.
I was hoping that he was going to say,
just throw a band-aid on the thing and put him back out there.
He's going to be fine.
Didn't you hear what Kurt Warner said?
But I didn't get that from him.
So he thinks that that's the news that is going to be coming tomorrow or Thursday
or sometime before the end of the week.
That was his guess.
And I said, is it possible they'll just put a brace on it?
And they'll wait.
He said, yes, they could do that.
But at this point now, there is more risk in doing it that way.
So, how are you?
Man, for the first home game, to have that news break before the first home game,
oh, my gosh.
Unbelievable.
I mean, geez, so crushing.
Are you?
I can't tell.
you how upset I was to describe my level of just heartbrokenness in the moment when I saw that
elbow.
You know, I could tell, I could tell by your tweet that came later when you were pissed off
about the touchdown replay.
What did I, what did I?
Why would you?
I don't remember, but, just because you generally, you're generally pretty disciplined.
on your social media during a game,
you know,
you give your,
you have your prediction,
you give your halftime assessment,
and then you give your little assessment
at the end of the game.
There's usually not much wavering in between.
But you were so pissed off
that they blew that touchdown replayed call.
Oh, God.
I think that was part of the pain carried over from Jaden.
Well,
you know what's interesting about that?
and I was talking to somebody else about this.
Oh, I was talking to CJ about this.
You know, CJ was in Dallas as part of the broadcast team.
You know, he produces.
And I said, you know, when that happened,
I borderline kind of felt like the game was over,
the season was over.
When I saw that elbow,
it was sickening.
And, you know,
what made it even worse or better, I guess,
is that he was literally,
literally Jaden Daniels at his best for the first 29 minutes and 57 seconds, you know, until the
final play of the first half. And you saw and you were reminded just how great he is, just how
elite level, talent-wise, he is. And I'm like, are you effing kidding me? A game and a half into
this season? And so I almost checked out a little bit. And I,
felt checked out, and I think that play brought me back to life because I'm like...
It certainly had an impact.
Oh, it was a...
It certainly had an impact.
Did you see Mike Pereira came out and said, what were they looking at?
Like, every...
It looks like they blew that call.
Oh, they completely blew it.
I'm...
I communicated with somebody this morning to find out when the team will be, you know,
uh, informed of the mistake that was made.
And, you know, people will say, well, who cares, man?
the game's over. I understand that, but who cares for them? But for us, it'll be a conversation. Why not? I want to know that the league, you know, wrote them a note or called them to say we totally blew the replay. That was a challenge that should have been, that should have led to an overturn and it should have been a touchdown. Look, the game would have been 17 to 17 in that moment. You don't know what would have happened from that point forward. And I also was pissed because,
because I'm like, look, this Dallas defense and our defense are pretty bad defenses today.
And maybe you could steal one because you're going to need to steal a few until he gets back.
But I think in the moment I wasn't even thinking about him coming back.
I was thinking, oh, my God, this season's over, which I don't think it is now after taking a deep breath.
But yes, that was disgusting.
The Terry Offensive Pass Interference penalty was ridiculous.
The game was, the Hoculi group, he's terrible.
I mean, that group is truly brutal.
You know, someone reminded me this morning when I was trying to find out when the team would find out about what the league says about that call,
that Hockey Lee was the one that literally almost cost him the game in 2024 against New Orleans when they,
You know, basically gave the Saints an extra play down there at the end of the game, remember?
Yeah.
With, and I'm forgetting the specifics of it, but they were incensed with the way that ended.
Yeah, you got to get that right.
But I'm not even sure the Hoculi crews in charge of the replay.
New York should have said, hey, this is an easy one, guys.
That's a touchdown.
It's an easy one.
Yeah.
Yep.
Anyway.
All right.
So I want to hear what you thought of the game.
I did just read your column because you told me to read your column.
So I have an inkling of what you're going to say here.
But share with everybody your thoughts after one of those games that we're going to remember for a while
if he ends up missing the rest of the year.
Yeah.
You know, what I wrote was, and this was the honest feeling I had,
watching the game up to that point.
He was brilliant up to that point.
He was vintage Jaden in so many ways,
but he had to be.
Okay?
They were 10-0 in the first 10 minutes.
He had to be.
For them to have a chance, he had to be that.
Right.
And I just, my impression is
he's going to have to be that more often than not
with this roster, which I think is
is lacking in talent
up and down the line.
And if this is what it's going to take
rushing for 70 yards
in the first half,
for them to compete, it's too much to ask.
That was my thing. That was my thing.
Too much to ask. Too much to ask.
I mean,
He is that.
What do you mean he has to be that?
He is that.
In the first half.
Josh Allen is that.
Every elite quarterback has to carry his team to a certain degree.
No, yeah, but some elite quarterbacks carry a team with an infrastructure of support around them.
And it's not their only past the victory.
It's been that for Josh Allen and Buffalo for a couple of years.
He has James Cook.
that's a better player than any skill player the commanders have.
It's been that at times for Mahomes.
I mean, look, he has Kelsey, a skill player that's better than any skill player the commanders have.
You're not wrong in saying that, but when you say, you know, he had to be that, he is that.
He is Superman.
He's got to put on the cape when they need him to put on the cage.
cape.
But they need them to put on the cape, I think they'll need them every week to do it.
I don't know if it would be every week.
I don't think it would be.
I don't know if it would be every week.
But my point is, I felt watching it that their only chance to win was for him to do this.
And I think that raised the risk of him getting hurt.
The way he slid was great.
I mean, he was very careful in his runs.
But it just felt inevitable.
That if you're asking this guy to drag this team up and down the field week after week,
it's going to happen sooner or later.
I guess that's why it's happened to Joe Burrow and Lamar Jackson and a lot.
I mean, a lot of other great quarterbacks.
Lamar Jackson.
Lamar Jackson came into an organization.
I get all that.
I know what you're saying.
And Joe Burrow has the two best wide receivers in football.
I know.
And also had the worst defense.
What I'm saying, you're not wrong in that there's a heavy burden on a player like
Jaden Daniels in an organization like the one they have with a roster they have.
But that burden is pretty damn heavy on every elite quarter.
quarterback. You know, it's true that Lamar Jackson had a better organization and Joe Burroughs got two
great receivers and Josh Allen, yes, has James Cook in the backfield and Patrick Mahomes has
Travis Kelsey. But at the end of the day, those guys carry the same kind of burden to go into the
phone booth, put on the cape and come out and carry the team in a lot of games. A lot of games. I
would, that's the part I would push back on. Like, he had to be that. He is that. And he's going to
have to be that. And so do a lot of quarterbacks in this league, they get asked to do that.
But yeah, in that game on Sunday, I don't disagree with you. Like, although I did say that if the
Diami Brown touchdown stood at 1717, and maybe, maybe they're in it, maybe they have a chance, not as much
a chance as they would have had with Jaden
Daniels, obviously. Right. Obviously.
That game's 38, 35, 37,
34, if he's in it. And it's
a great back and forth,
you know, one mistake's going to decide the game
kind of a game.
But that was my
thought. And, you know, I don't blame,
I don't necessarily blame
anybody for it.
You know, my position, I've written this a couple
of times. I think that Adam
Peterson, Dan Quinn inherited a really devoid, a roster really devoid of talent.
Similar to what Shattahan had when he came here in 2010, after he took over for Vinny,
you know, and all that.
And there's so many parts that need to be, that need to be upgraded.
you can't afford to make a mistake in your personnel decisions.
And I'm not criticizing him.
I'm not saying he's been a terrible general manager,
but he's made some mistakes.
And the mistakes stand out when there's so much to fill in.
So, by the way, I did in reading your column,
and we can talk about this now,
you did not agree with the decision at the end of the first half to,
Go for the touchdown. Why?
No, I see, I think it's gotten out of control.
This go for it mania, you know, has just gotten out of control.
Take the fucking points.
Take the points.
Who are you to think, well, we're going to, we're going to score.
You know, take the points, especially when you're getting the ball back at the beginning of the second half.
I mean, you're not wrong about, like, teams just not really enjoying kicking field goals anymore,
unless they're 65 yards and out.
But I actually in the moment, you know, when they got to first and goal at the one,
I'm like, you got to get a touchdown here.
Even if it comes down to one play, you have to get a touchdown here.
And I was totally okay with the decision.
Leamed in that direction.
But, and I've said this for the last two days,
I also would have been okay had they kicked the field goal because I think, you know,
we don't have all the information in these things, right?
Like it's, do they have a play that they really like in that situation?
You know, uh...
They like all their plays, Kevin.
They like the shovel pass.
I understand that, Tommy.
Do they really like the play they have in the situation with the context that they
have in that moment?
Um, and context matters.
You know, part of the context is what you said,
you don't want to walk away with nothing,
especially getting the ball to start the second half.
You can take the lead on the first drive of the second half if you're down 17 to 13.
So let's take the three.
But the other part of it is you have seen for the first 29 minutes and 57 seconds
that you're probably not going to stop them very much.
And this is going to be a game where the team that gets stopped and forced to kick field goals
in the red zone more than the other is probably going to lose the game.
and you have the context of that team's been on the field for 15 plays,
three straight long drives,
and we've got Jaden Daniels at quarterback.
So I absolutely had no issue and leaned in the direction,
but I don't have a problem with people saying that they preferred the field goal,
but I think it was a very debatable decision.
I don't think it was a slam dunk either way.
And those that say that the call or the decision led,
to the injury. You people are stupid.
No. Stupid. That was a fluke.
Yeah. That was a fluke.
You know, my point about Jaden making himself more vulnerable because he has to drag this
team had nothing to do with that play.
Right.
That was a fluke play.
Right.
Okay. I mean, the only risk they put him at was having an unnecessary play.
But the play itself, that didn't, I mean, no one can predict that he's going to trip and
fall and dislocated elbow on something like that.
Now, I have a question for you, because you're more well-versed in this than I am.
Why not put him in the shotgun for that?
Everyone in the stadium knew he was going to throw the ball.
Well, I don't think he was going to throw the ball.
You knew on first and second down that they were probably going to throw the ball.
I actually, and I've always felt this win, Shanahan actually did this when he was the coach here,
and in Denver is sometimes, and I've seen Andy Reid do it too.
You know, in that situation with no timeouts, just a few plays left, you know, teams just assume
that on your first couple of plays, you're not going to run it until the final play of the
half if you decide to go for it. So you're playing pass on first and second down.
I actually think teams should spread the field and run it on second down because I think
more times than not, it'll score.
and yes, if you get stopped, you'll get second guess till the cows come home because you didn't get that third opportunity at the, you know, at another play.
But that aside, shotgun under center, you know, as you said, they love their plays and that was the play they had called.
Now, I've gone around the bend on this one and tomorrow Steve Souter will be in to do a film breakdown.
And he and I have already discussed this play.
He thinks the play was going to be a trick play.
He thinks Rashad White was going to throw a half-back option pass.
To whom I'm not sure.
But Quinn said yesterday it was a sprint option and with Rashad White as a pitch guy.
The problem with that is they weren't blocking.
they were not going downfield as blockers.
There was a concerted effort for every single offensive lineman
to not be an ineligible downfield,
which is why suitors convinced,
on top of the fact that Rashad White was backwards waiting for a lateral,
which would have allowed him to pass.
He wasn't on that line where you typically are as a pitch option
on a play like that.
Quinn wouldn't,
Quinn should never have told us anything about the play, really,
but maybe he was being deceptive saying,
yeah, it was going to be an option pitch.
You know, Jaden keeps it or pitches it to Rashad.
Souter's convinced because of the past blocking
and because of the angle Rashad White took
that Rashad White was going to throw a half-back option.
And look, when you consider this guy Blow in two games
is already called three-trick play,
I know.
You know, it's a possibility.
I've looked at that place so many times.
It is a possibility.
It's a possibility except nobody looked like a pass receiver.
And he said, well, maybe Jaden was going to be the pass receiver after he lateraled it.
And I'm like, oh, my God.
Well, maybe, who knows?
But in terms of why not shotgun?
I don't know.
I mean, this was the play they liked.
I mean, I typically, by the way, on an option, you'll see the quarterback in pistol or in shotgun.
But maybe that was, yeah, you're right.
Maybe that's another indication that it really wasn't going to be an option play, that it was going to be a trick play.
Yeah, I don't know.
What it was was a nightmare.
It was a nightmare, as it turned out.
You know, I was thinking, I mean, for those of you, I know, I'd like to think that much of the audience listening.
to this podcast. And maybe this is a bit gratuitous. Maybe it's a bit self-promotional for both me and
Tom. But I'd like to think that most of you, like the large majority of you, or let me just say
every single one of you that are listening to this podcast, that nobody actually believes
that the call or the decision to go for it is the reason Jaden Daniels.
got hurt. Like I just said, you got to be stupid to think that. I don't mean to be that harsh,
because a lot of you guys called me stupid on the internet yesterday after you, uh, you saw,
what, did you see that? Did you see that? Oh, I saw it. I said, wow, he's walking in my
neighborhood now. Well, it was so ridiculous. I've got a couple of, of, uh, of emails and
tweets to read on that. I'll get to that in a moment. But, um, I mean, I, there are people,
I know because I've heard from some of those people on social media
that legitimately believe the decision to go for the touchdown is why
is why Quinn should be fired because he's the one that caused
Jane Daniels to get hurt.
And I have to say that it's the same people that if they had missed the field goal
or if they didn't score to take the lead on the first drive of the second half
would have been saying, how did they not go for it at the end of the first half?
It would have been the same exact group.
But, oh, yeah.
So yesterday, as I was doing the radio show, and I was, everybody was emotional yesterday.
And I just can't believe that this guy has heard again.
I mean, I know that some of you were convinced that it would happen.
I just didn't think it would happen the way it happened.
That's, by the way, the other part of this, right?
the one issue that people like me who loved Jaden Daniels and wanted him to be our quarterback
before the 2024 draft, the frame was like, yeah, I could see that frame being an issue if he
takes too many hits at the NFL level. But he stayed upright in college, played 52 of 54 games,
rookie year played in all 20 of their football games, which included three playoff games.
And what's ironic, Tommy, is what people thought might happen, or even after last year, you know, the narrative of he's injury prone and he's going to be injury prone.
It wasn't about having your foot stepped on and then dislocating your elbow on a non-contact injury.
The thought was this guy's going to get hit too much.
He's going to take on too many hits and he's just not going to be able to hold up physically.
that hasn't happened yet.
The two injuries of note are injuries in which his elbow dislocated in a very freakish, flukish way.
Now, the Seattle game is unforgivable that they ran that play down 38 to 7 or whatever it was in the fourth quarter.
No one's ever confirmed this with me because I've gotten after them for sure.
I think that's one of the truly more irresponsible play calls in a while.
I don't care if he's in the game, but if he's in the game, he's handing off or throwing quick bubble screens.
You don't run an RPO on a condensed field at the five-yard line.
That just made no sense.
You put him at risk.
It wasn't a read-option play.
I understand that.
It was a RPO, run or pass, but because it was such a condensed field and the pressure was so immediate,
that had to be in your mind as a possibility.
So I blame them for the first one, but still it was flukeish.
You know, he's not losing games because he's taking a battering to his frame.
You know, now that may be what comes next.
But anyway, so, yeah.
And let me make something clear.
Yeah.
Because I got some pushback on my calm.
my criticism was not of Jaden.
Okay?
I mean, I think, I mean, I think he's, everyone knows why I think of Jaden.
And now, just because he got hurt, I haven't changed my mind as to how great he is.
And his ability, I'm not saying he shouldn't use his ability to run.
That's not what I'm saying.
And his ability to be mobile is part of what is greatness.
I know, like he said, it's superpower.
power.
But I just, you know, my position was this is the way they're going to have to win most of their games.
And it's too much to ask.
But my criticism was not of Jaden.
No, I got that from reading it.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah, of course.
And your criticism wasn't of Quinn either for going for it.
You didn't agree with the call, but that's not what you were criticizing.
No.
No, the gist of it is what you said,
that if he's going to be asked to be Superman every week
with a roster that's limited,
then this is what you're going to expect.
And I would just push back and say,
I think they're going to be,
even with a decent roster,
there are going to be many games
where for them to win,
he's going to have to be that guy.
You know, you said he had to be that.
I think there are going to be a lot of games because Josh Allen has to be that.
Patrick Mahomes has to be that. Lamar has to be that.
Burrow has to be that.
The great ones have to be that, even if they have a supporting cast, on a lot of occasions.
But anyway, so yesterday on radio in the midst of, I don't know what made me think of this,
but as I was talking about, you know, the elbow injury and him being gone perhaps for, you know, a long time.
maybe the rest of the year.
I just thought about that stupid flag football game that was played in Saudi Arabia.
Let me read a couple of the quick emails real quickly.
This from Joe Z.
Kevin, I'm disappointed in you.
My guy every day from 10 to 1 and then another hour on your podcast.
Hey, Joe, thank you for listening so much.
But if you really think that a flag football game in March led to,
Jaden Daniels being injured in Dallas in September.
You've gone to the dark side of hot take radio.
I won't listen if this is where you're headed.
Sorry, but it's how I feel.
I hope you'll take it back.
From Hal, Hal wrote,
please tell me you didn't blame the flag football game in Saudi Arabia, L.O.L.
for his injury in Dallas.
And then this from Woo Me.
How is playing in a flag football game more than five months ago,
how does that affect you in a game today?
I can understand if it was a hamstring,
but the only reason any of this happened is because he got stepped on.
Yes.
Yes.
This is one of those things, Tommy,
where the radio station puts out, you know, the YouTube video cuts.
and then labels it in a way that makes it sound like I said,
the flag football game in March caused his injury in Dallas.
I'm not the most brilliant, but trust me, I did not say that, people.
I never said that.
I said, can you imagine if that stupid flag football game,
which we criticized, you know, which we talked about,
we're like, and by the way, the team was holding their collective.
breath. They didn't want him to play in it, but he got a lot of money to do it, and you can't
begrudge these guys for trying to make as much money as they can. By the way, especially with a guy
that might be injury prone for the rest of his career. But we talked about how the optics of it
was not good coming off the season. And then in that game, he was running around juking people
playing receiver for part of it. And I just, it occurred to me as I was on radio. I'm like,
Can you imagine in that stupid flag football game that he played in if he had gotten injured in that flag football game?
Because it was a possibility that he could have been.
And we talked about it.
Can you imagine if he had put in at playing receiver, juking people,
if he had put the left hand down to try to keep his balance and he had dislocated his elbow in that game?
Can you imagine if that had happened?
Um, that's what I said.
I didn't say that the flag football game caused the injury in Dallas.
Um, but yes, I got a lot of heat for that, uh, because I guess it was late.
I think the video was labeled the flag football game.
Sheehan's upset with the flag football game, uh, because it caused, you know, it led to the injury in Dallas or something.
No, I never, I never actually said that.
Of course I wouldn't say that.
That's absurd.
But anyway, I think...
What are your kids think?
You talked about your one son told you that you...
Yeah, he sent it.
He sent me...
He said me...
He says, Dad, you're making some new friends today on Twitter.
And I said, what are you talking about?
And he sent me...
The funny thing is, the first one he sent me, I'm like, well, everybody seems to agree with me.
Because that was the first one I read.
And he said, well, read this one.
And then...
People that clearly saw, I guess, two different slugs to the video, I guess.
One of them sort of led people to believe that I said he got hurt because he played the flag football game.
But let me just tell you, for those that wonder about this, I know for a fact that there weren't a lot of people in the building in Ashburn that were very happy after the season he had last year that he was going to go play in this flag football game.
And then when they saw it, they were even more angst-ridden because he wasn't just throwing the football as a quarterback.
He was running around and played a little receiver in the game as well.
Now, they said the right things publicly, although Adam Peters did admit that they were, you know,
they kind of were on pins and needles holding their collective breath, making, you know, hoping that he would get through it without any injury.
but they couldn't keep them from doing it because they got paid a boatload of money.
I have no idea how much, but obviously it was a lot.
Because that thing was supposed to be in the UAE, right, to begin with, or something like that.
And then the Iran...
It wound up in L.A.
Because of the Iran situation, yeah.
Right.
But no, I did not trust me, people.
I've lost my mind on occasion, but I did not say that the flag football game
in March caused the injury on Sunday.
I just said it was stupid going in,
and can you imagine if he had gotten hurt in that game?
All right, well, what else?
I've got something else from the game on Sunday
that I haven't mentioned this week so far,
but do you have anything else on Sunday or Jaden?
Not particularly, no.
So, you know, it's two games in,
and still two games does not make a season by any stretch of the imagination.
But did you guys know that the offensive lines pass block win rate,
according to the ESPN win rate stats,
that they are eighth in the league right now in pass block win rate.
I actually like this, and I refer to these stats,
these pass block win rates.
They also have run block win rates.
They have, you know, rush win rates,
past rush win rates, and run-stopping win rates as well.
And their pass-block win rate with this doomsday offensive line currently through two games
is eighth in the league.
Now, I think they've done a pretty decent job.
I really do as a pass-blocking unit.
before I saw that stat, I said last week, I thought they did a good job in pass pro,
and I thought they did a decent job in pass pro on Sunday as well.
Now, their run block win rate is 28th in the league.
And I do think that their run blocking hasn't been great.
I think the backs have gotten what they've been able to get.
I think Jaden was a big part of the success that Rashad White and Bill had on Sunday running the football
because he was a potential runner on a lot of those plays.
A lot of zone read looks, several of them, you know, a few of them anyway in the first half.
But I saw that just a little while ago.
And I think, again, two games, I'm not saying that the offensive line, I told you, at the end of the summer,
I'm not going to sit here if they have a great day, week one, a great day in the first two games,
that you guys were totally wrong about it.
but the offensive line through two games,
they've done a decent job as a pass blocking offensive line.
And the advanced numbers, you know,
suggests the same thing.
But anyway, all right, what else?
Anything on the game?
Nothing else.
I mean, I feel like we still have so much to talk about.
Yeah, what am I forgetting?
I don't know.
I'll remember it between now and the end of the show.
We'll be back with more after these words from a few of our sponsors.
Isn't it nice that football's finally back and prize picks knows it?

That's right.
If you win your first $5 lineup, you'll get $150 in lineups.
Prize picks has been and is my go-to daily fantasy sports app,
and it's the most entertaining way to watch a game,
especially those games in standalone prime time
when you may not have an interest one way or the other.
Well, prize picks gives you an opportunity to have some interest.
It's very easy to use.
You simply pick between two and six players
and their projected stats, either going more,
or less than that projected number.
Like tonight in the Monday night game between the Rams and Giants,
I've gone less than 52 and a half rushing yards for Cam Scataboo.
Against that ram defense and after the big game he had last week,
you know me, contrarian, I'm going less than 52.5 with the expectation I think most people have
that he will rush for more than 52 and a half yards.
You can follow the result of this watching the game tonight,
or if you're hearing this later in the week,
you can go back and see if I was right or wrong.
Prize Picks is now available nationwide.

Second down here at the Giants 31.
Back pedaling.
What a catch? Touchdown.
Devante Adams.
Devante Adams had himself.
a night last night against the Giants on Monday night football.
Boys and girls, that is a true number one elite wide receiver.
Puka Nakua's one as well.
He didn't play last night.
He was injured in the game.
But Devante Adams last night, eight catches, 195 yards, two touchdowns,
24.4 yards per reception on 10 targets.
man, does he get separation even at his age of 33 years old?
The Giants go down and their quarterback may have gone down for quite a while.
The news just broke moments ago.

So, this from Ian Rappaport and Mike Garifolo from the NFL network.
Jackson Dart left the game on the first drive of the game last night, got sort of sandwiched
on after he threw a deep ball that should have been caught.
The thought was a knee injury, but they ruled out anything serious last night.
And this morning, they were saying an MCL will cost him maybe a couple of games.
Well, here's this from Ian Rappaport and Mike Garifolo.
Quote, Jackson Darts knee injury is more severe than originally anticipated, and the Giants quarterback could miss the rest of the season.
That's not what everyone was expecting.
No.
John Harbaugh, on his press conference, said last night afterwards, he said it looks like we avoided the worst case.
We avoided the devastating outcome.
but the reporting now as of mid-afternoon here is that Jackson Dart could miss the rest of the season.
You know, he was in that blue tent. I talked about it all last year and even the offseason when we talked about the Giants.
I'm not a Jackson-Dart guy in part because he legitimately couldn't stay on the field.
And I'm saying that, you know, off of 30 minutes plus of conversation about our quarterback who can't stay on the field.
I understand that.
But I wasn't a big Jackson dart believer.
I thought he was a Lane Kiffin creation as much as anything else.
With that said, I thought he played well last Sunday night against Dallas.
And even on that opening drive, the Giants got the ball first.
They were on the move.
I thought he actually looked pretty sharp in the throw that he made down the field,
which was not caught by his receiver.
And I forget who the receiver was on the play he got hurt on,
was a great throw under pressure.
But they've got, I'll tell you what,
James Winston Tommy came into that game
and looked completely unprepared.
Unprepared.
Yeah, he was terrible.
You know, he might be fun to have around the locker room.
He is fun.
But he was terrible.
Terrible.
So bad.
And I don't know if they have.
have the guy, Tommy, the Italian last name, the guy that played some quarterback there for a while that's played some quarterback.
In fact, I'm pretty sure he beat us a couple of years.
Why am I blanking on his name? I'm going to pull it up here real quickly. We'll get it.
Tommy DeVito. Tommy DeVito, I don't think, is on that team anymore. And Drew Locke's not on the team anymore because he's the quarterback in Seattle.
By the way, a quick note on that.
They're saying out of Seattle today that Sam Darnold may practice tomorrow,
which means that there is a chance he will play on Sunday here in Washington.
But it looks like James Winston.
Like that's going to make a difference.
Ooh, I'm telling you right now.
I'm not giving you the smell test.
Why?
Because it's 17, 6 and 1 on the season.
Hold on.
Let me knock on wood because I know it's about to turn in the ugly direction.
I was seven and one on Sunday in the NFL.
Washington right now, right now as we speak and subject to change,
but right now they are going to be one of the biggest anti-public plays of the entire weekend.
I get just a quick email at the beginning of the week, usually this morning,
and I got it late last night.
and the person who sends me the email from tropical local locales just said,
Washington on Sunday.
The number is six and a half, and because it's a half point less than laying seven,
that's always an interesting number.
And it's overwhelming, he said, early, you know, play on Seattle more than any other team in the league,
although he did also tell me that Atlanta,
he said you might have to give out Atlanta on Thursday night football
because everybody's on Green Bay laying six and a half as well.
Pennix Jr., I think, is going to start on Thursday night.
You know, I'm glad you brought that up.
I'm glad you brought that up because the NFL to just say like they're going to need him,
that is not, you're not somebody who's bet the sport before.
and I know you haven't.
But did you see some of what happened this past Sunday?
Did you see Deshawn Watson light up Tampa Bay?
Like, did you see Tennessee who looked literally barely like an NFL team in week one,
losing to the Jets, nearly beat Philly?
Did you see the Saints go in and come from behind to beat the Ravens in Baltimore?
This league.
I saw the Saints game.
This league, Tommy, come on.
man. Of course they could win Sunday. Anything can happen every week in the NFL.
So to say like they're going to really need them, I get it because, you know, they've played well without him and they've got an incredible defense.
It looks like again this year. But I did a segment today and I talked a little bit about it on the podcast and I'll just ask you.
Simple question. Is Washington season over?
Yes.
Do you want to add to that?
Do you want to?
No.
I mean, if he's getting the surgery and Marcus Marietta is your quarterback until he gets hurt,
and then you've got the Greek freak backing them up,
who might be interesting to watch, you know, as a curiosity.
No.
I mean, you know, are they going to win another game?
Of course, they'll win another game or two.
But I think that if he's out for the year, five and twelve might look good.
I don't feel great about saying, no, the season isn't over.
But I do think that.
I don't think the season's over.
I think a lot of things happen.
I know that.
But that's because you have a basic philosophy that you've just enunciated.
to us that anything can happen, you know.
But anything can not happen every week to the same team.
No, I mean, and that's why I'm going to say that I don't feel good about, like, their chances to have a competitive, like, playoff contention season where they're playing meaningful games.
And that's what I mean by is the season over.
Like, I'm not into talking right now about, oh, but the season's not over.
I had a caller say, no, the season's not over.
This season's going to be about learning whether or not Quinn got it right on the coordinators.
It's going to be about learning about all of these new – I don't want to hear that on September 22nd after two games.
And it's going to be hard to judge – it's going to be hard to judge your court.
Of course.
With the backup quarterback.
Yes.
And then defensively, if your offense is putting you in a difficult position every week, it's going to be hard to judge.
him too. When you lose your starting quarterback, things get sideways for 95% of the team. So I don't
feel good about it. But the reason that I would say the season isn't over yet is because I'm still
holding out hope that Jaden could be back after, let's just say the bye week, in which six games
would be played. 11 would still be on the schedule. And because the NFL, anything can happen
week to week. Could you steal two in his absence and be two and four heading into the final
11? So you might be able to beat the Colts in London. You might be able to beat Seattle on Sunday.
I don't care. I don't care what your, what your formula or your emails or your clandestine phone
calls say, that's not happening. I know, but you would have said the same thing about Cleveland
against Tampa Bay as an eight and a half, eight-point underdog. You would have said,
said the same thing about the Saints.
I would not have been as adamant.
Really?
Deshawn Watson?
Did you, the week one performance was,
why are they even putting a guy that hates football
as much as Deshawn Watson out there on the field again?
Did you, Todd?
I guess that.
Because the span between Tampa and Cleveland
is not nearly as great
as the distance between Seattle.
Well, the point spread would say that it is.
The point spread would say that the Saints and Ravens
that there was a bigger disparity in that game
than there is Sunday in Landover.
The point spread would certainly say
that there's a bigger disparity between Philly and Tennessee
than Washington and Seattle.
I mean, Tommy, you do know who's 2-0 at this point, right?
his name starts with Kirk and ends with Cousins.
I know, but that doesn't surprise me.
It doesn't?
When I talked about it, you made fun of me when I bet them on the over five and a half.
But that doesn't surprise me.
They have some talent.
They have a new coach.
And Kirk Cousins is still an effective quarterback.
I'd say what, if Kirk Cousins was here right now is your backup,
up, I'd say you still got a season.
Oh, yeah.
100%.
So?
100%.
Um, yeah, I, I, uh, I don't think the season is over, but that is contingent upon, you know,
what the doctor on the radio show didn't say, which is they don't do surgery.
And they throw up a brace on that.
thing after it's healed over a few weeks and he's back.
I mean, Kurt Warner put a brace on and played the next week.
So part of me really does just say, come on, man, put the brace on, let's go.
I mean, when the season's over, go get the surgery.
But, you know, it's not your throwing arm.
You can hand off with your left hand, with your right hand.
It kind of be hard when the running back's to his right.
But with a brace, hopefully you can still hand it off.
You can't stiff arm anybody, probably, with the brace.
But I don't know, man.
Could this be moving forward and how to proceed on this,
could it be a source of contention between team Daniels and the football team?
Ooh, I thought about that.
I can't believe I haven't brought that up.
I'm so glad you did.
I was thinking about that with the doctor when he was saying this is going to be surgery
because I was thinking what if one side says they don't want it and the other side says you need it.
I also thought about this.
I thought about from Jaden's standpoint now, okay, you know, let me let me just get to this real quickly.
Jaden Daniels is going to get a contract extension.
I don't care if he's out the rest of the season.
I promise you he is going to get a contract extension in early 2027.
I know some of you are like, well, you can't give him a contract extension now.
And by the way, you better, you're going to pick in the top three or four.
You better take a quarterback in April of 2027.
I'm going to tell you right now, I'd be shocked if he doesn't get a contract extension.
Now, that's contingent on him being out the rest of the year with the elbow, him having surgery, it being repaired, and then thinking all will be well.
If he actually comes back and plays poorly or gets injured again over and over again and plays in six games, check back with me.
Now, I'm going to tell you this, he's going to eventually get a contract extension, whether it's this upcoming offseason or the offseason that follows.
worst case they'd pick up the fifth year option next May,
and he'd be here for two more seasons.
But Jaden Daniels, the talent that he has people,
this is very rare.
The league knows it.
They'd be in line to pay him if he ever became available,
which Adam Peters is not ever going to let him become available,
unless he gets injured seven times this year
and six times next year, and it's clear
that he can't have an NFL career
because he's, you know, just can't stay on the field.
But, I mean,
Joe Burroughs missed half of his career
so far. Yeah.
He got paid.
What I wanted,
yeah,
what was that in answer to?
You had said something.
That was the point. I wonder if this could be a sort of contention
as to how to deal with
the elbow between
team Daniel.
and the football team.
Well, how do you think it would break down?
Team Daniels doesn't want it, the team does,
or it couldn't be the other way, right?
Unless Jaden's inner circle says,
we don't want you to go out there and play with a brace,
because what if you don't play as well,
what if you get hurt again,
now we're impacting the $500, half-billion-dollar deal
that you're in line for,
in January, February, March of 2027.
Rather get the surgery so we can just say we fixed this problem,
which has been really the only serious injury, right?
That's the only injury that's kept him out for a lot of games.
I know that, you know, he had the knee in Green Bay and missed a couple of games.
That's true.
And he had the ribs, which didn't cost him any games in 2020,
2024, excuse me.
But from Jaden's standpoint, you could say this is the issue that's cost me the most games.
A surgery takes care of it, makes it a non-issue moving forward.
Maybe they'll come to that conclusion, even though you know the kid wants to play football.
Yeah.
Back to the idea that the season is over, or if you agree with me, it isn't over.
the other thing that it's contingent on for me, Tommy.
And this is going to be a stretch for me after what I witnessed on Sunday.
But the defense has to be improved.
You cannot, you know, kind of hang in there.
Oh, okay.
I know.
You got to, what do you mean by that?
The defense has to improve over what we've seen so far or what we saw last year.
No, the defense has to be good enough to keep you in games with Marcus Mario at
quarterback. It's got to give you a chance. Last year it gave them no chance for the most part.
And so what we saw... Well, how do you think that's going to happen? Well, I don't know because I think
in two games, we saw a game in which there was promise and then a game against a much better
offensive football team that's veteran where they looked like last year. And by the way, it was
worse than what I even thought after watching some of the all 22 and I'll wait for Souter tomorrow.
Steve will be on tomorrow.
But man, the miscommunications in some of the zone coverages,
it's, you can see that they are still trying to figure out Durante Jones's scheme.
By the way, that makes sense, right?
It's a brand new coach, 11, 11, 12 new players.
Like, it should take some time.
So I guess what makes me believe that is that I, I, I'm hoping it.
I'm wishcasting it.
Because you can't, what we saw Sunday is not sustainable.
You have no chance.
Like even if Jaden were healthy, like that's the best case is 8 and 9, 9 and 8
with a defense that's going to play that way during the course of a season.
But with Marcus Marioita quarterback, you need, you need to help him.
I mean, they gave no help last year.
I looked something up that was, because I didn't know this until Sports Center this morning,
mentioned that Minnesota is on a seven-game regular season win streak.
I was like, what?
They won five in a row last year to end the season?
And you know how they did it and how they are two-no?
Brian Flores' defense.
Yeah.
Because the quarterbacks...
They don't have a quarterback.
The quarterbacks in this seven-game win streak,
J.J. McCarthy, Max Brasmer, Kyler Murray for a series in Carson Wentz, and they have won seven regular season games in a row.
The defensive performances in these games, I mean, we remember the first game that started this seven-game streak was the one in which Jaden tweaked the elbow, the Minnesota 31 to nothing shutout of Washington, which was J.J. McCarthy's highest passer rating game of his very.
brief career in his second highest
QBR game of his very
brief career.
And as I've said, they made
him look like Joe Montana in that game.
But defensively, I mean,
some of these performances are just
absurd. Like, they held
Green Bay to 121 yards.
They got six takeaways against
Detroit in a late season win when
Detroit still had faint
playoff hopes. They beat Dallas last
year, forced Dallas to go two for 12 on third downs. And then here, they, they took a team that
scored 59 points in week one and held it to three in week two. The weather was a factor,
for sure. But man, Brian Flores' defenses or something else. And I bring it up because Durante
Jones is a disciple of Brian Flores.
and the truth is
Minnesota's personnel
defensively is nowhere near
the best in the NFL.
It's middle of the pack,
upper third maybe.
They don't have Philadelphia's personnel.
They don't have the Rams personnel defensively.
I mean, they just brought back Harrison Smith,
who's like 50 years old at this point,
to play safety.
So where does the wish casting come from?
that Durante Jones, the scheme, the 12 new players, that, you know, yes, there appears to be a major flaw on the back end at corner in particular.
But maybe they get better and maybe they turn into a good defense.
It's early.
Maybe they do.
I doubt it.
Here's something else that I thought of, and that is Dan Quinn's future being tied.
to something. We talked about this before the season started, and I've changed my mind on it,
and I will tell you how I've changed my mind and tell Tommy after these words from a few of our sponsors.

All right, Tommy.
Tell us about Shelly's.
Well, I always love when I hear,
from followers
about Shelley's back room
at 1331
F Street Northwest
in the district. And I heard something
this weekend from J.M.A.I.9
who lives in Atlanta
and he posted on
X. He said,
Tom, I loved your Shelley promos
on the pod.
And he's absolutely right about this.
You should mention the proximity
to the metro
more often.
I'm a D.C. native that
lives in Atlanta now, and I
go to Shelly's whenever I visit
since it's close to the
metro center, it's an easy
stop from anywhere
in D.C.
And he is absolutely right.
Shelly's, it's less
than a block from
the Metro Center rail station.
You take the 13th Street
station exit
right from there, and you can see
Shelly's from the street right up the road.
Okay.
I mean, you know, I've always said that the price,
one of the great, many great things about Shelly's is its location, so close to so many of
the museums and sites in downtown.
And Metro gives you a way to get there as quick as possible to enjoy a good smoke, a good
drink and something great off their menu.
You can find out more by going to shelley's backroom.com.
So remember before the season started, I said to you that in so many ways,
Dan Quinn's future is tied to David Blow and the performance as the offensive coordinator
because Dan's not an offensive guy.
And if Blow wasn't the right elevation, even though the entire organization agreed with this, it's not going to be a good season if they're not good offensively.
And he's going to be gone, you know, more likely than not.
And I've now changed my mind on this.
I think that Durante Jones is the one that's going to save Dan Quinn.
because can you imagine after what you saw Sunday
if they end up having another dreadful defensive season
and defensive football team.
And he is a defensive head coach.
And when he took over last year, Tommy,
when he took over, the defense was better.
It didn't have players because any of the good players were hurt,
but the defense was definitely better coached.
after Joe Witt Jr. was demoted.
And he had an opportunity to say, you know, that thing that I learned when I wasn't a head coach about delegating more and, you know, being more of a CEO kind of a coach and not, you know, handling one side of the ball.
He had a chance to change his mind on that and say, I'm a defensive head coach.
I'm a defensive coordinator.
I've got to do that.
To be right, I've got to do that.
you know, and he didn't do that.
And not only did he not do that, he went out and got a coordinator that he runs a system
that Quinn's not really familiar with.
He hasn't run a system like the Brian Ford system.
If this defense, because he picked Durante Jones,
he decided not to become the play caller and the game planner as a defensive head coach,
like Mike McDonald and others that are in that role,
If they're terrible on defense again, and then on top of that, Jaden doesn't play enough,
and they're a 3 and 14 team picking second or third in the draft, he's gone.
Now, I'm not predicting that at all.
I kind of have some good vibes about Durante Jones.
I mean, Sunday was alarmingly awful, and it was, but then again, it's week two,
a lot of new players, new scheme.
and you were facing, you know,
one of the best offensive teams
you're going to face this year.
But
Durante Jones in this defense
better be significantly improved.
It has to be for Dan Quinn.
Wow.
You know, once you get past the front line
of the defense,
I just don't think they have very good personnel.
I don't think their linebacking corps is very
very talented. I think their defensive backfield, well, obviously, I don't you have to mention
the defensive backfield that's destroyed them in the first two games. I just don't see this
as a learning process. I see this as a personnel problem. But the personnel's all new. I agree
with you when it comes to corner right now. Like Sandra's still
appears to be a problem. He's not a cover corner, certainly not an outside cover corner. But the truth is,
they're in zone like 80% plus of the time, plus of the time here in the first two games, which,
by the way, a lot of teams play, you know, majority zone. But I can't weigh in on it yet because
there are so many new players. And by the way, a player they were expecting a lot from on defense this
year. Frankie Louvo, you know, they need him. They need him. He is, he's different than
Chenal, okay? I think they believe that both in coverage as a blitzer, as a runstopper. But I mean,
chase on and settle and O-A, I think, has looked good, actually. Stiles, obviously. Yes, like that
you get past the front line. Amic Robertson, actually, I think,'s been the most impressive defensive back,
Although Jeremy Reeves is just such a big hitter and probably their best tackler.
And I think Nick Crosses looked good, although he got hurt the other day.
I don't know how you would.
With an internal injury.
I know.
That put him in the hospital.
Yeah.
What do you think that was?
Some sort of organ, right?
Yeah.
Yeah. Bruised organ of some sort.
That's my guess.
I don't love their personnel on the back end right now.
I can't speak to whether or not I like their personnel in their front, you know, in their front seven.
I will say this, Kinlaw is good, but he got banged up the other day.
And I think always pretty good.
But, and I think Louvo is really good.
We need, I could see this defense improving and becoming, you know, I'm not discounting the possibility that it ends up being a decent defense this year.
That's what I'm saying, because it's too much of an unknown to say that for sure what we saw Sunday is what it's going to be.
I'm not saying that you've said that, but.
Right.
I don't know.
I just think they've got personnel problems.
But back to what I said about Quinn.
If the defense sucks again, and Durante Jones was truly his pick.
I mean, Blow was the organization's pick, basically.
They didn't want him to leave.
But if that defense is bad again, and Durante Jones has guys running around not communicating well,
and they end up with a losing record, that's it.
What was the seventh or eighth or eighth pick?
Seventh or eighth choice, right?
Who?
Durante Jones.
He wasn't their first choice.
Well, Brian Flores was the first choice, yeah.
Right.
But once Brian Flores decided he was going to.
stay in Minnesota. I think they wanted, he wanted that style of football. He wasn't the seventh
choice. Who were the choices before? They interviewed a lot of people, but they, they didn't seem like
they were interested in anybody more than Durante Jones that turned them down. Or am I missing
somebody? Brian Flores is the only one that turned him down, right? I think so. Maybe I'm wrong.
All right. We got more show, including, and I promised this yesterday, I do want to go back to Saturday.

The ball canals first a fumble and Vanderbilt has won it.
What?
Yeah, what is right?
Just an absolute, unimaginable ending for NC State Saturday in Nashville against Vanderbilt,
trying to run out the final six seconds of the clock.
One of the worst blunders to decide a game you'll ever see.

So here was the situation at the end of the NC State Vanderbilt game on Saturday.
NC State was up 31 to 28 with a fourth down from their own four-yard line with six seconds to go.
Their quarterback is C.J. Bailey. By the way, he's a bit of an NFL prospect. He's 6-6.
220. He's been there for a while. I think he's a junior. He might be a senior. He's been at NC State for a while.
But he's been a good college quarterback through the first few years of his career. And NC State was about
to wrap up a win, which would give them a two-in-one record. They actually got blown out by Virginia
in the opener. So six seconds to go. Own four-yard line. Fourth down. What do you have to do? Well, you could put
your punter out there, Tommy, and snap it to the punter and have him run around in the end zone
and then run out of the back of the end zone, hopefully burning up the six seconds.
You could have your quarterback back there that you're going to snap to and shotgun,
and he's going to run backwards and run around, and maybe he runs out of the end zone
after he's burned all six seconds, six seconds, or maybe he rolls right and heaves one down the
field out of bounds incomplete to finish off the clock.
There are options here.
You could run around and take a knee in the end zone after the six seconds has elapsed.
The one thing you cannot do in that situation is run around, burning the clock up, and then run
towards defenders.
You cannot get tackled in the end zone.
because the only way you lose the game is if you get tackled and you fumble and the other team Vanderbilt recovers.
So you want to avoid getting tackled.
And C.J. Bailey ran around and then ran towards the defenders.
Got hit, fumbled, Vanderbilt landed on it.
They won the game.
It was a massive blunder.
I have no idea.
The coach afterwards said they instructed him to kneel or run out of the end zone.
I will say this, just about this situation.
Six seconds left is a little bit different than, say, four seconds or less.
Six seconds, it is harder to run out the clock running around in the end zone and then taking a knee or running out of the end zone.
But you still don't, I don't think, risk a punt.
you still are probably taking a chance if you roll around and then heave one down the field,
although I think that's the best way to burn the six seconds is to roll backwards into the end zone,
start moving towards the corner of the end zone, the deep corner of the end zone,
and then just heave one deep down the sideline out of bounds incomplete,
and that should eat up the six seconds.
But six seconds is some time, and if there's immediate pressure and you,
have to run out of the end zone quickly.
That's still better than turning towards the defense.
But it would require, let's just say if there was a second or two seconds on the clock,
it would require then a punt or a kickoff from your own 20-yard line after the safety.
The two points was assessed.
But he screwed up.
He turned towards the defense.
He got hit.
He fumbled the football and they lost the game on that play.
one of the worst, you know, complete and utter blunders to lose a football game that we have ever seen.
That one will be remembered for years to come.
I feel badly because C.J. Bailey's been a good player.
I don't know much about him other than just watching him as a player.
But he's going to have to live with that for the rest of his life.
You know, the other part of this game, Tommy, is that N.C. St. Vanderbilt,
was a three and a half point favorite in the game.
And they put a second back on the clock when they were up 34, 31,
and they kicked the extra point for the cover.
Wow.
Yeah.
So that was another aspect to the game.
Now, the number was somewhere around three, three and a half,
but still, they put a second back on the clock and had them kick the extra point.
But one of the all-time dumb, dumb plays,
I'm assuming the quarterback really didn't understand what he was supposed to do.
So you put that on the coaching to a certain degree.
But it was an absolute stunning ending, crazy ending.
It really was.
You had something else that you wanted to mention to me.
Something about Maryland football and media?
I mean, I was just browsing over X,
and I saw this post by Taylor Lyons,
who apparently covers Maryland for the Baltimore Sun.
He posted Maryland PR apparently has a new policy this year
not to allow reporters to ask follow-up questions in Locksley's presser,
referring to the head coach Mike Locksley.
It was never a thing before this season.
I've had staffers come up and actually grab the microphone out of my hand
multiple times in the past few weeks.
Sometimes when you want to ask a question of a coach,
you would like to ask a follow-up question to that,
you know, based on his response.
Apparently you can't do that in Maryland.
I'm reading the tweet right now.
Yeah.
Maryland PR doesn't allow follow-up questions
at their press conferences.
Look, I
If this is true,
and I'm assuming this guy works for the sun,
so I'm assuming that he's not making it up,
why would he do that?
If that is the new policy out there,
I'd certainly like to know why.
And maybe there are good reasons for it.
My immediate reaction,
without knowing what the reasons are,
is that it doesn't make sense to me,
beyond just, you know,
the normal practice of being able to ask a question
and a follow-up,
By the way, sometimes more than one follow-up at normal sports press conferences.
But beyond that, I feel like this is something that falls into the category of, what are you doing?
Like, for starters, and I mean this with all due respect and love, because I'm an alum, and more than that, I'm a lifelong terp.
You know, I grew up in Coalfield House and at Bird Stadium going to, you know, games.
and Maryland is very important to me.
But for a program that desperately needs attention,
Maryland football, that is,
and even Maryland basketball these days,
why wouldn't you welcome the most you can get?
You know, for a program, and let me be honest,
and I know that this hurts some feelings
because I have mentioned this before.
But Maryland football,
on the landscape of sports,
you know, from a conservative,
standpoint in the DMV, it's borderline irrelevant. It's just so far down the list when it comes
to interest in sports teams in this area. Maryland basketball is a much bigger deal than Maryland
football is, but even Maryland basketball isn't what it once was in terms of fan interest and
media interest. I mean, why would you want to perhaps turn away attention or limit media attention
I would think that you'd want to welcome and accommodate anybody willing to cover their teams.
I've had this conversation with people about this before, and I know, again,
some aren't going to agree with me or they're not going to like me saying this,
but when it comes to, like, realism about the sports landscape in the DMV anyway,
I'm not going to speak to Baltimore specifically, but when it comes to the,
sports consumer, you know, our city is a pro town now.
You know, the Nats weren't here for most of Gary's run.
They weren't here for most of Ralph's run.
You know, and Ralph was the last time, the Ralph era, the Ralph Regian era,
was the last time that Maryland football was somewhat relevant in the market.
Add to that, you know, the football and men's basketball programs,
because they haven't won like they once did,
and I'm talking more about basketball.
Basketball's had some moments,
but the Gary years are, you know, in the rear view,
20 years in the rear view.
I mean, we're not a top 10, top 15 program anymore.
And I would just say, and I've said it before,
but if I were handling PR in College Park,
I would be thrilled with anybody willing to cover our teams.
reporters, bloggers, radio and podcast show hosts,
if they want to talk Maryland football,
I would try to be as accommodating as possible.
I wouldn't be creating rules to reduce or limit access.
I'd be making it easier to cover our teams, not harder.
And I certainly wouldn't be doing something
that would create negative attention
about how we're handling the media.
I love Maryland.
It's so much a part of and has been of my life.
I would guess that in this town, when it comes to talking Maryland sports,
of the people that have daily long-form talk shows,
I probably talk Maryland more than anybody else in town.
I'm just guessing.
Football and basketball.
More basketball, to be honest.
But even I know that the majority of you people listening right now
couldn't care less.
and I think the new athletic director, Tommy, Jim Smith, he's super impressive.
I think he understands perhaps a bit more than his predecessors where, you know,
Maryland football as an example, exists on the list of what's important in the DMV.
But before he arrived, there was, you know, there was a little bit of a belief that they were the customer in the relationship that they had with local media.
And it's just not that way anymore.
You know, there are schools in the area that reach out to media people with ideas, you know, coaches to interview or have on shows, players, the same thing.
They'd love to see more coverage of their programs.
I don't want this to sound the wrong way, but I guess there's no way for it not to sound the way it's going to sound for some of you.
but for a lot of us that are in sports media or in what I do,
kind of the long-form daily shows,
I don't need to talk about Maryland.
I do because it matters to me,
but it doesn't move the needle for any of us.
Now, would that change if they were ranked in the top 10
and they were playing Ohio State or Michigan for,
a spot in the Big Ten title game and maybe a playoff game, sure.
You know, if they were an upper tier team in the Big Ten,
I think it would be a big deal.
But like every other, you know, team in town that isn't the football team,
there is basically a bandwagon element to everybody else.
And that includes, you know, the college teams of note.
Now, Maryland basketball, a little bit different.
You know, Maryland is a story in basketball,
but they can become a non-story pretty quickly during seasons like last year.
You know, that is, that can't continue.
And I think Buzz Williams is going to have a good season this year.
But Maryland basketball is, I mean, look, Maryland is a basketball first school.
It always has been.
And it's a bigger deal, and it always has been than football.
And when Maryland is really good in basketball, there is a lot of media attention.
But it's different now.
It's just different than it once was.
Like I said, it's more of a pro sports town than it used to be, and there's just a lot more competition for attention.
I personally would make it easier for media to cover the teams if I were out there, not harder.
I mean, the football stadium, I mean, let's be honest.
Saturday night is a once every few year scenario.
Virginia Tech sold out.
Most times that stadium at best is half full.
You know, Saturday night was great.
It was the exception, not the rule.
Usually you can't even get students to go to football games and hang out for the duration.
Basketball's different, but it's not like it used to be.
You can get tickets to Maryland basketball games.
There was a time where, you know, a big Maryland game, an important Maryland game,
was the hardest ticket in town that wasn't Redskins Cowboys.
So, yeah.
Yeah, again, there might be real reasons for this policy.
I don't know.
I just would be, I would err on the side of being overly welcoming and accommodating
to anybody that wants to cover the teams out there.
Kevin, the problem here, I think, and I'm not speaking to Maryland, but generally,
but having taught in colleges part-time for like 17 years.
Right.
The problem is academic institutions have a certain level of arrogance that think it's their universe and they can operate it any way they want.
They're really not answerable to anybody and that everyone outside their universe just isn't smart enough to really understand their business.
All right. Go Terps beat UCLA. I'm excited for the game Sunday because I actually think that they are good on.
offense. I'm disappointed with the result
on Saturday night, obviously. We all are.
It's not what,
you know, I know some people thought it was
very predictable and it would end the way it
ended. Defensively, they look
terrible. Offensively, they're going to win
some games because they're pretty explosive
on offense. But
yeah, all right.
Anything else?
By the way, where are you going?
I'm not going to have Tommy for the next
few shows. Where are you
going? Yeah. I'm going
Germany. Why are you going to Germany?
A nephew of mine is marrying a German girl, so we're going to the wedding.
Where is the wedding? What part of Germany are you going to?
The wedding is in Gunnstadt Asselheim.
But where is that near? Like, what of the big cities? Is it near Berlin? Is it near
Heidelberg?
Heidelberg. Okay.
It's near Heidelberg.
You've been to Germany, right?
Yeah, like 40 years ago.
Oh, really? Okay.
Yeah.
And a friend of mine, yeah, after the war,
a good friend of mine,
has basically been living there for much of that time.
And another close friend of mine, you know, my best friend Pete,
he's over there visiting his family.
So the three of us are going to get together for a couple of days.
It's October.
You're nearing October fest.
Yes.
But you're not going to be in Bavaria, I'm assuming.
No, I'm not going to be.
Okay.
That would have been a fun...
That would have been a fun time to be in, like, you know, to be in Munich for Octoberfest.
I've heard it's a lot of fun.
Yes.
Yes.
All right.
I mean, where am I leading hosen?
Are you going to miss how many games here to talk about?
One or two?
I'm going to miss it too.
Oh, man.
To talk about.
Well.
I think I told you the date I'd be back.
I know.
I just don't pay attention to it, you know, when you tell me these things until it comes to the dates in which you're going to be away.
And then I panic.
Yeah.
Yeah, I've got your...
I won't be back until October 13th for the podcast.
Well, that's not the German trip.
I'm reading your note now.
after Germany, you're going to be out in Spokane again, right?
Not Spokane.
Washington State.
Not Spokane anymore.
It's just Washington State?
Spokane.
Vancouver.
Oh, you're going to be in Vancouver.
Okay.
Washington, yes.
Yeah.
Well, Spokane's in Washington, too.
Yes.
And Spokane is a place that you've been to a bunch, which is why I assumed that you might be heading to Spokane.
Well, don't assume.
because we've been through this.
Okay.
Have a good trip.
Enjoy.
I'll be back tomorrow with Steve Suter
and his first film breakdown of the year.
See you, Tommy.
Okay, boss.
