It looks like Washington might be on it. First and 10. Ticked in the air and intercepted. It's picked off by Sony Stiles. The rookie has his first. Under center here. Fink it to Wilson. Pressure.

Oh, my goodness. Right into the hands of Cain Madrano. His first chance in the Ns from 50. Three plays, three takeaways, and three touchdowns following all three of them. The them being the three plays and the three takeaways. And instead of O and three, the team is one and two headed to London to try to get to 500. I could only make the theme of three takeaways. three last for so long.

On the postgame show last night, I kept saying over and over again that the three takeaways led to 21 points. I was wrong. The three takeaways led to 20 points because the pick six by Kane Madrano was followed up by a missed P.A.T. by Drew Stevens, that P.A.T. coming from 48 yards out after an unsportsman-like conduct penalty against Washington's bench. Well, we found out what the penalty was for specifically.

How about Frankie Louvre in civilian clothes running out onto the field to celebrate and to taunt the Seahawks a bit? Of all people pulling them off the field, it was Stefan Diggs. that penalty could have been an absolute killer. If they don't keep the ball on that final drive and run the clock out and they lose 34 to 33, we are talking a lot about the lack of discipline. It was Diggs hugging the goalpost. It was Frankie Louvre running out onto the field along with all of the other penalties. Wow.

Thank you, Marcus Mariotta, for checking to a 19-yard Rashad White run and then keeping it on a read option on a nine-yard run on a third and seven to ice the game. But yes, the three takeaways actually led to 20 points, and it is still the most points off of turnovers for this team in, believe it or not, 21 years. 21 years ago, the 2005 Redskins finished up that season with a game in Philadelphia to clinch a playoff berth. And they had 20 or more in that game of points off turnovers, culminated in that game by Sean Taylor's fumble return for a touchdown to beat the Eagles 31 to 20, I believe the score was. But yeah, thank goodness that they won that game yesterday. And look, those three turnovers, those three takeaways, the plus three in the turnover margin,

without a doubt, the number one reason for the win. I got this from Nick. Nick writes, Kevin, I was one of those you made mad by giving credit to Dan Quinn and the organization for the win. The organization is drafted and traded poor. I think Nick, that's poorly. and yesterday was just what you say all the time is NFL randomness. To give Quinn and Peters credit for yesterday when Seattle beat themselves, that's a joke.

Thanks for that, Nick. And I knew when I said that the organization last night is do some credit for a win like that. And I talked about it on radio today as well. I knew that that was going to anger some of you. But, yeah, I said last night and on radio today that I think the culture, the togetherness culture that Dan Quinn has created and Adam Peters has tried to fill with players who, for the most part, have kind of the fight over flight mentality. I think it was a reason for the win, 100%. I think that played into a win like yesterday's win where you had. a lot of key players down and you were playing a very good football team as an eight and a half point underdog at home. And I would say this, Nick, you know, as it relates to your note. First of all,

the idea that, you know, that the credit for yesterday was a joke when Seattle actually beat themselves. I don't think Seattle beat themselves. I think Washington. beat Seattle. There are plenty of games that are lost more than they are won. Ken Beatrice said that for many, many years. But Washington's three takeaways, two of them were legitimately forced. And the third, there was pressure from Tim Settle, who got his arm up in the air and influenced that throw, which actually hit his helmet and deflected up into the air and was picked off by Sonny Stiles. But I would say this, Nick. Number one, it is true that Dan Quinn and Adam Peters and that front office have created a very, very good culture,

a culture of togetherness that certainly did not exist before they arrived. That is not an opinion. Dan Quinn is a leader and players love playing for him, not opinion, fact. And they have his back rather than staff. it when things are rough as they were last year and two weeks into this season. You can eye roll all you want. You can scoff at it all you want, but I would take the word of someone like John Kime, who's been on the beat longer than anybody else has and covered almost all of the Snyder years. And he knows what a bad culture and a bad locker room

looks like during a bad season. He has seen a locker room of men turn. on coaches and turn on each other over and over again. And John said, along with everybody else on the beat, but John's been on the beat longer than anybody and really, you know, was witness on a daily basis to bad culture. He kept saying late in the season that he was so surprised, if not shocked at how positive the vibe was in the midst of what happened last year. So whether you like it or not, Dan Quinn is a leader and he has created with his staff and the front office a very positive culture. That's a fact. That's not an opinion. All right. Now, number two, after number one, it's a fact that they have very good culture out there as we speak,

subject to change maybe, but I don't think subject to change as long as Dan Quinn is in the organization. But number two is just because a team, doesn't implode, you know, doesn't come apart at the seams from within, doesn't riot when things go poorly, it doesn't mean that the team's going to be a good team. You know, that's a TBD thing. But I would just remind you, Nick, and others like Nick, Dan Quinn and Adam Peters have just two complete seasons here and now three games in a very early third season. The first season was 12 and 5 with two road playoff wins and an NFC championship game appearance for the first time in 33 seasons. Their second season was 5 and 12 with a roster that

was more injured than any roster in the NFL. There's context around both seasons, but we have just two seasons of results to judge them by. One was the best season by a mile in 33 years here. The other was injury ravaged and very hard to evaluate fairly because of all of the lost players. And as I've said many times, not just lost players, but their best players were lost. And of course, that was led by their best player who plays quarterback, Jaden Daniels. who barely played in seven games last year.

Only four of them start to finish. And then we have this third season, which is in its infancy. We're just three games into a 17-game season. My recommendation would be to let it play out, or at least let's get to the halfway mark before we seriously start evaluating Quinn, Peters, the team. and we should, I think, look, I'm not going to tell you how to think.

I'm going to tell you what I think. I'm intent on not being certain about anything with this team this early into the season. We knew going into this year that with two new coordinators, it would take some time. We knew that with 11 to 12 new players on defense, it would take some time. By the way, the most new players in free agency of any team in the team, the league. We knew that two road division games to open up the season followed by the home opener against the defending champions had the potential to be a very challenging start schedule-wise. So let's just try, or again, let me just say without telling you what to do.

My intention has been and still is to not be certain about anything this early in the season. I personally think it's silly to be certain about anything over the summer. And I think it's kind of silly to be certain about anything three games into a season in which you have two competitive road losses. And I would say that the Dallas loss was competitive until Jaden left the game. And then an upset win over the defending Super Bowl champions who through their first two games looked like. a Super Bowl contender again. Look at the NFL through three weeks before the Monday night game tonight. The Raiders are 3 and 0. The Texans and Chargers are 0 and 3. Of course, that makes sense. The Patriots are 1 and 2. But beyond that, Drake May is a total basket case.

He is an absolute mess as a quarterback. By the way, I do think he'll eventually be a good quarterback. I do. Last year, he had the benefit of playing what turned out to be the easiest schedule in the NFL. And when he got up against the better defenses in the postseason, we've now had a run of playoff games and now three games into the regular season of Drake May looking terrible. But stay tuned because that could change pretty quickly. But while Drake May is a total mess right now. Deshawn Watson is playing well and the Browns are two and one. Yeah, that makes sense. It was great to be certain about either one of those two teams three weeks ago. And then you've got the Rams. Many thought the Rams could go 17 and 0 this year. That's what kind of roster

they had. They're one and two and already two full games behind the 49ers who they've already lost to once in the NFC West. Nick, the only thing that I actually agree with in terms of what you wrote is that there is NFL randomness. It does sort of creep in to the game, in part because the teams are so close. And it comes down to health. It comes down to the bounce of a ball or a call by an official. The NFL is completely different than college football.

You know, college football, you get, you know, know, an SEC power LSU at home against some directional school, the directional school has zero chance to win the game because there is a massive talent difference. That's not the NFL. The NFL is fine line throughout and sometimes the results can be weighted by some random events. I don't necessarily think yesterday's result, though, was random. I thought Washington was ready to play that football game. They were prepared. They were backs against the wall.

They were next man up. I think culture had a lot to do with it. I do. Not as much as the three takeaways had to do with the win. Some news today. The team signed Austin Echler to the 53 man roster. Ben Standing reported that they actually signed Echler on Saturday. So it was not done because of anything that happened yesterday.

Rashad White got a little bit banged up yesterday. They did it on Saturday. Echler had a possible practice squad signing in Carolina, but Washington said that they wanted to sign them directly to the 53 man roster. Adding to that, Echler will be on the plane tomorrow when the team heads to London. Austin Echler's healthy days in 2024 and even early last season resulted in the offense being much more dynamic. I don't know what he'll look like coming off the Achilles. I hope he's Austin Echler and the threat that he was as a skill position playmaker. They could use more of that. I don't know what it means for any of the backs. It's a bit of an odd signing. I guess it could mean Ketron.

Allen to the practice squad, but you're certainly not going to keep all of those backs on the 53 man roster. Somebody's going down to the practice squad between now and Sunday's game against Indianapolis or two injured reserve. I don't think that that's going to be Rashad White. I hope it's not. I thought he played really well, and he played through some pain yesterday, injured his shoulder a bit. But that was some big news early this morning. Then we found out, by the way, Leo Chanel had a neck injury.

Prayers up for him. He had surgery today. Quinn said it went well. But he is done for the year. And you keep your fingers crossed for a player like that, that his career won't be threatened by what was a fracture of his neck. again, hoping for the best for Leo Chanel. Kane Madrano got that opportunity because Louvo was out.

Louvoo was there, as we know, but he was not on the roster for the game yesterday, inactive because of the injury. And then we had Leo Chanel go out and Kane Madrano came in and played. Well, more news from the team today. Frankie Louvue Chigacanquo. And yes, Jaden Daniels. all headed to London with the team, all ready to participate in practice this week. I don't know what that means, and Quinn didn't answer it with any detail as to whether or not Jaden Daniels will play.

He said, we want to see him in practice. It's all part of the return to play, as he describes it. And he suggested that maybe there would be some news on Thursday. They're traveling tomorrow, and then the league for these London, for these international games, takes over a lot of the PR, which they will do Wednesday through Friday. So we'll see how it goes. My hunch is that Jaden sits this week. Mariotta plays against the Colts. Jaden comes back against the Giants.

That's my hunch, as of now. give me time to change. And look, Mariotta, I think, had his best game as a Washington quarterback, and he's played in several of them, started in eight of them, came in several of them last year. Marcus Mariotta, start to finish, was in control against a very good defensive team. He was prepared and ready, and I thought played his best game start to finish when you factor in. what he did at the line of scrimmage. So there is some of the news from today. Echler signed Chanel done for the year.

I'm covered by an eligible receiver. Well, this is one of those where kind ofly gets. called for the penalty, but not his fault. Lots of penalties in the game yesterday. They were a big part of the story of that game. Both teams flagged a number of times. I actually thought both teams got away with some penalties that weren't called. That illegal formation called on Washington took a touchdown off the board that would have given the skins a 14 to nothing lead on Seattle. The last time they led Seattle 14 to nothing at home was a playoff game in January of 2013.

I just thought of that when I said a 14 to nothing lead was almost had yesterday. There was something about that play that I said I would go back and look at and give you an answer on today. And a listener of the show. All right, let me go through my game take with some of my updates, because I did get something wrong. More than one thing wrong, actually. Well, let me start with this.

That play that we came in with, the 48-yard touchdown run that got called back. I wanted to see if Mariotta himself had enough time on the play clock to make sure that Antonio Williams was up on the line of scrimmage. There were about three to four seconds left on the play clock. He brought out of an empty formation bill back to the backfield, which meant that Antonio Williams had to step up to the line of scrimmage to make sure that their right tackle, Josh Connerly, Jr., wasn't left uncovered. He didn't do that. That led to the illegal formation call and bringing back the play.

He's a rookie. Mario deyota knows he's got to step up. He was rushing to get the snap off after he checked to the run and did not have time to do that. So that is on Antonio Williams. It was on him anyway. I was just checking to see if there could have been some help for him from the quarterback. And there really wasn't time for that. real quickly before I get to

the good, the bad, and some of the other observations, since I came in with that penalty, I wanted to play what Dan Quinn said today about three key calls in the game. That penalty, then the chas-on late-hit slash unnecessary roughness on Shaheed. I thought that that was a textbook hit. Quinn weighed in on that.

and then the unsportsman-like following the cane madrano pick six as well. Here was Quinn earlier today on those three key penalties. Let's start with Caleb on the sideline. Looking back up from the TV copy, it certainly felt like a hit that was in the strike zone. That's where we're aiming for on the sideline. And so catch, not a catch, sideline to go. But I liked after the quarterback got outside the pocket, it, Caleb Vaughn finishing the play on the sideline.

So I wanted to look back at it, but I felt like we're trying to coach, you know, like strike zone hitting. And I felt like it was into that location. It was a tough hit. No doubt about it, Barry. But I thought it was a clean hit. It wasn't anything, you know, that felt like rose to the level of that for me. But that's their interpretation.

I know things are moving at full speed. It's a hell of a lot different than, you know, when we're doing it frame by frame. But that was my look at it when I was watching the copy. second one after the shift on bill's run we started as you remember like a empty formation come back into it so the receiver has to step on the line in that instance it was a good check by Marcus based on a certain look to see if we could get down to the edge and so that was that was a missed opportunity for us and then the third one was a I guess you know unsportsman like celebration so it was a player on the field that was not in uniform

so which resulted in the 48 yard extra point and miss of that you can imagine my thrill with that so we had a good discussion about that in the meeting today and I love the energy our team brings it was like definitely a team win and I felt every bit of that Barry and our team does but those are ones that like not Caleb Vance but the other two man let those are in our control and let's get those them. The Barry he was referring to there was Barry's Ruluga with the athletic now. And look, they were within their control, the illegal formation and the unsportsmanlike conduct after the Cain Madrano pick six. And I'll tell you what, not to beat this to death, but if they had lost that football game 34 to 33, there would have been wholly hell to pay for a team that also had an

undisciplined post-score reaction in the opener when Stefan Diggs jumped into the goalpost and hugged it and got flagged for that. That's got to stop because, again, fine line between teams and fine line in these games. And those are the kinds of things that can decide these games, many of which get, you know, come down to the wire. And I will tell you this, I did not think it was over after the pick six at 33 to 24. I didn't expect Seattle to go down and score in a minute six to make it 33 to 31. But once they did, and they had all three timeouts left, Washington was a punt away from losing that football game. And that last drive was impressive from a Marcus Mariotis standpoint, checking to the Rashad White 19-yard run on third and nine.

and then the pull on the read option on the final third and seven. But even that pull on the read option, that happened with a minute 36 left in the game. Seattle had called their last time out before that play. If they get stopped there at the Seattle, let's say 40-yard line after a run that doesn't get the first down, Seattle's still going to get the ball back with about 50-some seconds left in the game, with a chance to win it with a field goal. Very, very fortunate. And by the way, earned it offensively at the end.

But those are the things that Quinn's right about. They got to get those things fixed. All right, my game take from last night with a couple of updates and a couple of corrections really. So my good list was the three takeaways clearly. And look, they had three. Two forced fumbles, both by Sunny Stiles. One, they recovered, and that was the one early, that set up field position at the Seattle 21. They scored on that.

That was the touchdown pass to Rashad White. Washington, excellent in the red zone. So was Seattle, by the way, in the game. And then Stiles also forced the fumble on the tight end, Saabert's touchdown, and he just came down with the ball in the end zone. We had the Madrano pick six. There was pressure from Oway. Stiles was a part of that play as well. Madrano has done this in his football life at UCLA.

He's very good at those anticipation feel kind of has a sense of where the ball's going to go. And look, the Stiles interception, Settle gets pressure, gets his arms up in the air, and Darnold, you know, has to throw it over him and around his arms, which are extended, right in his view, and the ball hit his helmet. It's about time that Washington gets, one of those plays to come their way. The three takeaways, number one, on the good list. Mario da was definitely on the good list.

As I talked about last night, he checked into four or five plays that turned out to be good plays. There is more, you can tell, there's more autonomy at the line of scrimmage. We've seen it with Jaden in the first two games, or the first game and a half. And Marioada's veteran poise, his understanding, his preparation for the game, the way he was prepared. He was in control at the line of scrimmage against a very good football team. Plus, he had so many good throws, whether it was quick game or deep throws, and two of his biggest throws were not completions,

but there were excellent throws to Diami Brown, who couldn't get the second foot down, and did Terry who couldn't get the two feet down. I thought he was, and then he had the deep one to Antonio, Antonio Williams. dropped. Marcus Marietta's numbers don't say a performance, but it was so much more than numbers. The numbers were 19 of 31 for 183 yards and three touchdowns, sacked twice, but really one of those was an escape where Ernest Jones made a really good play on a play that Marioita was about to, I think, make a big run and perhaps a touchdown run on. But on a day against a really

difficult opponent with a makeshift offensive line and no ability really to run the football, Marcus Marioota had an A day. There were a couple of throws, the one that nearly got picked off by number seven and Wuso. That was, I think he just got tricked. We'll hear Souter's film breakdown on Wednesday. But I had Marcus Marioita as an A performer in the game. And I think a lot of it was the stuff that isn't measured or it isn't quantifiable. I thought Blow had a good game. I loved the middle tunnel screen with the widescreen as sort of a decoy or a fake. I thought once again, he showed patience with a running game that wasn't working, but you can't just turn Leonard Williams and Byron Murphy and that group loose by dropping, you know, Marcus back 40 plus

times. They had 32 rushes in the game, 27 by running backs, and they had 33 called pass plays in the game, maybe 34, if you count the scrambles, 35 maybe. But he tried to stay balanced. He tried to run the football. And look, there were a couple of runs early. Kroski Merritt with heavy 13 personnel. If I didn't mention that last night, I think I saw more 13 personnel, one back three tight ends than I've seen in the first two games. We kind of expected more 12 and 13. But there were three tight ends out there with Yankoff being the third tight end early when Kroski Merritt actually had, I think, a nine-yard run and a six-yard run. So he only ended up 19 of 36, okay, 1.9 yards per carry. And he had the 48-yarder taken away

from him, which, you know, would have looked much better. It would have been 20 for 84 had the 48-yarder and maybe more carries because maybe they get a bigger lead and they, you know, they win the game in different fashion. But I thought Blow had a really good game. I think Blow's done a nice job, really through three games. Maybe a little conservative in the opener, but maybe the score of that game in Philadelphia dictated that. Maybe the Philadelphia defense dictated that.

Terry Diggs and Rashad White were all on my good list. Terry was outstanding in the game. he did have a drop. Diggs is so good after the catch. Such great feel, especially zone coverage. When he catches it, he can make people miss. McClorn's contested catchability has always been elite. That is the thing that is elite about his game. Most of it is because he doesn't get great consistent separation. The two slants on the third and six and then the fourth and one, I actually thought they should have challenged the spot. before the fourth and one, really good throws and really good catches. Without a doubt, the best defensive players so far on this football team through three games is

Amic Robertson. What a hell of an addition. People kept referencing his very low PFF score, and they just kept talking about the competitor and the kind of player they thought fit into a Brian Flores-slash-Dorante Jones defense. Look, they are hurting in the secondary. Their past defense is not very good. Amick Robertson is very good. And he played, or he has played very well through the first three games. He had four pass defenses in the game and almost had a pick early in the game as well. I thought Kinlaw was outstanding again.

I thought Sonny Stiles, obviously, with the two forced fumbles and the interception and the coverage on price down the field on the deep shot. This guy's proven in three games that he can be an early down run blitzer, a pass down pass rusher as a blitzer. He can cover and he can go sideline to sideline to make tackles. He's high IQ. He's got the green dot right now with Louvo out. Stiles was on the good list.

The run defense, of course, is on the good list. They did a great job stopping the run. 17 carries by running backs for 39 yards, basically. So you're talking about just 2.2 yards per carry for the running backs in the game yesterday. Dallas had a difficult time running the ball against Washington last week. In Philly did as well with the exception of the one big chunk run from Saquan Barclay. The run defense does appear to look much better than it has the last two years. It's currently third in the league through three games.

Now, that is a small sample size. And while there are reasons to be encouraged with the run defense, Kinlaw's done a great job. I mean, the edge setters, Oway in particular, has been outstanding, I think, against the run. We thought he was being brought in to be a pass rusher. primarily, but he's been very good against the run. There are reasons to be encouraged. The caution would be that they've played two straight opponents that haven't even tried to run the football.

17 carries by running backs in the game yesterday. Sam Darnold threw the ball 45 times. Jackson Smith and the Jigba on the double pass had a pass attempt as well. So 46 pass attempts, 17 rush attempts by running backs. Dallas is the same thing. Why? Because it's just too easy to pitch and catch against our defense right now. So why, you know, why stress yourself out?

Why break your back trying to run the football when maybe that is the strength of this defense? And obviously the weakness is the past defense. So I still have to give him credit for an. excellent day. I'm just saying like this coming week, Jonathan Taylor, Daniel Jones, they're going to try to run the football. So stop,

shut down the run against Indy Sunday in London and I'm going to feel really, really encouraged, really optimistic about the run defense. Because Kinlau's a beast. There's no doubt about it. Settle is really good in there. Pain,

we know what pain is. A couple of plays dominant, a couple of plays, not so much. The backers are involved. And again, some really good defensive end outside edge work by Oway Chason and company. The TFLs are so impactful in the games. You know, the minus threes, minus fours in the run game, those are drive killers. They're almost the same as Sacks, really. The Sacks probably average more lost yards per, but they are real drive stallers, if not drive killers all the way around. What else is on my good list?

The goal line stand was huge. Really thought they did a nice job, especially on the fourth down with some pressure because there wasn't consistent pressure all day long. Tressway outstanding again. He's been really good for a season he claims will be his last. And yeah, I give Quinn and the organization credit for having this. team prepared, having an organization that was resilient that, you know, basically kept the outside noise on the outside because there was a lot of doom and gloom coming into the season

to a certain degree. There was aura of collapse, I believe, Tommy described it. There was certainly some burying of this team and some, you know, last rights read after the lost last week, you know, with the loss of Jaden Daniels as well. It's a big win. It's a very, very, very impressive a win all together. But like I said last night, it's just one. And this league, they're all standalones this time of the year. What you see this week does not end up being a predictor of what you will see the following week more times than not this early in the season. On the bad list, the penalties are number one for sure. And then this defense, right now is just giving up far too many explosive plays in the past game. Just far too many.

Seattle had, you know, 393 yards passing in the game. Sam Darnold was 31 of 45 for 3.79 and 4 touchdowns. The other completion was Jackson Smith and Jigba's completion on the double pass for 14 yards. It's just too easy. And look, they play two excellent teams when it comes to being able to throw the ball, being able to throw the ball down the field, being able to throw the ball to really good receivers. Pickens, Lamb last week, JSN, Shaheed, Cup, yesterday. Tough. You don't have that in Indy, so a better chance, perhaps, to look a little bit better. But they're getting carved up in the past game defensively.

And I think the past rush just hasn't been good enough, disruptive enough. They're trying, but they're not getting there. Now, they've played two very good offensive lines in back-to-back weeks as well. And look, the quarterback yesterday is a quarterback. You really have to make uncomfortable. And they did a couple of times. There were some spots, including the Madrano pick six, including the fourth and goals. So there were key moments in which the pass rush and the past defense showed up.

You know, Sanra still did not start the game. His snap count was really taken up by not only Russell Douglas, but some Fabian Moreau. He still was in there, but a lot of his snaps were in the slot. And that's really where he belongs. But on the list of not good, you know, overall, kind of the past defense, which is rush and coverage combined. I mean, Jackson, JSN, my God, the amount of room he had when he caught balls most of the day, 10 for 128 yards with a drop.

And the screen game killed them. The early one to Barner for 32 yards, the tackling on that was bad. And I did notice that they caught them on five-man rushes, you know, one extra man on the pressure with like two to three of their screens were against extra man pressure. That's good timing on the play call and could have been, you know, something that they game plan for. their tight ends were outstanding. I mean, Barner had five catches for 69 yards, and then Saubert had the touchdown as well. Yeah, it's not good enough right now.

It isn't. And the opponents had something to do with it. And the new defense and the new players have something to do with it. I would expect when Amos gets back and is ready to play and play a lot. It's him, Robertson, Douglas. primarily at corner. That's my guess. Offensively on third down, man, three of 13 usually isn't good enough. But again, the plus three trumped all yesterday in the turnover margin. It really did because Seattle was four or five in the red zone, average nearly seven yards per play. But that

plus three, man, that is usually an absolute drop-down. indication of a winning team. Your plus three were better. The injuries, again, you know, losing Chanel, having Rashad White banged up, Marcus Marriota had to get an IV during the game, didn't miss a play. But yeah.

So that was basically it. So the thing that I wanted to correct from last night was I thought when Lucas Patrick, the guy that started at center. When he went out, I didn't notice that he went back in after four or five plays. So Allegredy did take those snaps when he was out, but then he came back and then Allegredy moved back over to guard. So you had Lucas Patrick. Quinn said today, this was really a result of the Cosmi injury. Let's see what happens when Cosmi's ready to play again to see if Aligretti goes to the bench at that point. Oh, you know, we'll see.

They signed Lucas Patrick because he had some experience at Center, but he's really got more experience at Guard. I thought he did a decent job. That's one for Souter to talk about because I bet you he'll be focused on what happened at Center in the game because he was not impressed with Allegretti last week. Yeah. So, yeah, I wanted to correct that because I said last night you had the, you know, before the game, offensive line reshuffling, and then during the game, there was some reshuffling. It was for four or five plays. Max, you had that. There were a couple of other observations from the game.

I mentioned last night, I just love the way they cover kicks. Other than the 36-yard opening kickoff return, they were really good. That's what they have done under Larry Isso, and Percy Butler did knock Rashid Shaheed out of the game for a period of time on a kickoff. following him at 27 to 24 lead on the field goal. Luke McCaffrey was cited at yesterday's game, returning kickoffs. He did a decent job. Rashad White did an excellent job with his one kickoff return. It was a 38-yarder.

I mentioned the 13 personnel going back and just watching some of the game. They were in it a lot early, more than they've been in it this year. But still 11 personnel, the three receivers is really, and the one back, one tight end, that's the formation that they're in. That's the package they're in more than any other is 11 personnel. And we thought it'd be a lot more of 12 and 13. I think this was the game in which we got more 13 personnel. There were several calls in the game that I think were missed.

And I'll just go through them quickly. the drive that Seattle had towards the end of the first quarter, which included that 32-yard screen to Barner. There was a first in 10 to the receiver Russell for 19 yards. Was it Russell? I think it was Russell, who had that catch for 19 yards. Number 38, I think it was, 19 or 20 yards. Martin tried to punch the ball out.

But O-A definitely looked late on Darnold. No call. Tyler Owens knocked into a punt returner. I thought that was catch interference. They didn't call that. That was in the first half. The delay of game, I talked about this last night on Seattle's first touchdown. It does look like the clock goes to zeros with, you know, an extra beat.

You know, sometimes they'll allow an extra kind of half beat. It looked like a full beat to me. been delay a game. That would have set up a second and goal from the eight. You know, Washington tried to block a punt it looked like, and their punter, I thought, got hit and there was no call. I thought Joshua Joseph's on the TFL that he had. I thought it was close to a horse collar. I thought he had the runner's jersey. I think was Halani. Marcus Marriota got smacked in the head. How they missed that on his completion to Terry at the end of the first half.

I have no idea how that happened and how they missed that. The chase on penalty, you heard Quinn's explanation. There was a pool reporter who spoke to Nikki Jabala who just said, look, the hit wasn't to the neck, wasn't to the head, wasn't with a helmet to helmet, but he launched himself at a defenseless receiver, and that by definition is a penalty. I don't know, man. That was a tough one to take for sure. Um, yeah, uh, those were some of the plays that I think were missed in the game.

Uh, the, I thought they did a really good job at the end of the first half. I had no problem with them trying to throw the ball out of their own end zone after the goal line stand. I think they needed to try to get a first down out of their own end zone. Then they use their timeouts on defense well. They worked the clock at the end of the half. Well, the only criticism is maybe on third and four with 30 some seconds. You try to throw it and you try to get much better. field goal range. They ran it. I'm sure they were expecting to maybe get it on a pass down. They didn't get it, so they let the clock tick down and force Stevens to boot a 57-yarder,

which he made. I think you guys know, after I said last night, maybe you knew before, this trend with a 12th man holding on kickoffs. That may go away this week, but basically Tressway was a 12th man. holding the ball on a tee for Drew Stevens' kickoffs. One of them went out of bounds. Why do they do that? Philadelphia started this a few weeks ago. Chicago's done it.

Other teams have done it. Apparently, it gives the kicker a chance to deliver a dirty kick, they're calling them. And those are kind of squibby, hard to handle, that just land barely in the landing zone beyond the 20 and before the goal line. and Washington tried it yesterday. We'll see if that rule gets changed. What else did I have? I think that's it.

The crowd, many of you wondered why I didn't mention the Seattle presence. I wasn't there. Sure, I heard the Luke chants. I'm sorry, the Cooper Cup chants. And we're used to it. What do you want me to say? This is still not a fan base that is come back and embrace the team like it's 2003 or 1992 or even like 2012 or 2013.

We lost a lot of people. We lost a lot of people. I'll tell you this, man, I love the uniforms. I'm not a big burgundy on Burgundy fan personally. But the old uniforms, the championship uniform look being back minus the logo on the helmet, it's just more pleasant to watch our team. It looks and feels like our team. I have to say watching them through the first three weeks and even the preseason games,

I feel like we never went through that horrible era of the Jason Wright concocted, you know, duds that were truly duds. All right. Go around the NFL, just talk a little bit about the games tomorrow. I'm going to save the Maryland-Loxley conversation for tomorrow. But I'll finish up with just some other NFL, another wild day in the NFL, especially last night. And last night's game was big going in and was really looking like a dud through the first half. But what a wild second half. The Broncos rally from 16 down to beat the Rams. 30 to 26.

That was Hufanga on a 66-yard pick six in the fourth quarter. Stafford's 33rd pick-six of his career the most in NFL history. he passed Brett Farrf on that list. Stafford's a Hall of Famer regardless of that. He also ranks fourth all time in fourth quarter comebacks in NFL history, and he followed up that pick six with a drive to take the lead late in the game, but they gave it up at the end losing by four. halftime down 16 to nothing. I got to give it up to Bo Nix. You know, the more and more I watch him, I know that Sean Payton's got a really good system. This guy never seems to get rattled. He seems to come up big in big spots. I seriously doubt, honestly, that New England beats Denver if Bo Nix is the starting quarterback in the AFC championship game. He's got some players. There's no doubt about it. And he's got a very good deal. defense. That 2024 draft, I mean, the jury is still out and it's going to be out for several years. You know, let's come back in 2029, five years after the draft and look at it and say, all right, let's rank them. Because right now, Caleb Williams looks great, but he's injured. Jaden Daniels

has looked awesome, but health is an issue. Drake May looked great last year and looks like the worst or one of the worst in the class this year. J.J. McCarthy has a had an opportunity, and when he has, he hasn't been very good. He just got traded to the Giants. Pennix Jr., I'm still a believer in Pennix Jr. He looked great on Thursday night. Bo Nix, the last of the six, he's having quite the career so far. Sean Payton does it for a lot of these quarterbacks.

But anyway, there was a call late in the game that really, in many ways, stole a win. away from the Rams. Denver's go-ahead drive in the final two minutes, final three minutes. Wallace, the defensive back covering Bryant, the receiver for Denver, on a third and six in which Bo Nix got pressured, rolled right. The ball was deep in Rams territory in the red zone. He throws one up and Wallace comes down with it, a clear-cut interception in bounds, and they called him for defensive pass interference. It was a terrible, terrible call. Now, Denver had three timeouts, so they could have gotten the ball back, down three, because it was 26, 23 at the time, with about a minute 15 left, but that was one of the worst calls of the season.

Ironically, when you think about it, one of the worst calls we've ever seen in a big game was the NFC championship game between the Saints and the Rams. The first year, Sean McVeigh went to the Super Bowl, and New Orleans was going in for the game-winning field goal, and an egregious defensive pass interference wasn't called. Same two coaches, McVeigh and Sean Payton. Sean Payton got the wrong end of the stick in that NFC championship game, and last night it was McVe who got the wrong end of the stick. I think they'd still switch and say, no, give me the right end.

of the referee flag in an NFC championship game versus a week three game. But really an exciting game, really an interesting comeback. Bow Nix, more and more impressive, you know, as this career continues to develop. Elsewhere around the league, let's start early.

You know, the smell test went four, one and one yesterday. So I ended up a 7-11. and one weekend. College Saturday was a bloodbath, three and ten. But four one and one yesterday, and the loss,

the chargers. The chargers were in complete control at this game. They were up 10-0. They were up 13-10 driving. They had a chance to go up more. And Herbert threw an inexplicable ball in the red zone down near the,

you know, inside the 10-yard line that got picked. And that seemed to spark Buffalo. And they went on, down 1310 to score the next 14 unanswered. Josh Allen threw two picks in the game, but James Cook rushed for a buck 54 and the Chargers, I thought, had a chance to win the game, and they looked early in that game like they were going to be a threat to win it and a threat to easily cover the plus seven and a half. They did neither. They lost 24 to 16 to fall to 0 and 3 on the season. about Deshawn Watson and the Browns.

This was supposed to be two roadstarts and then Shadur Sanders in the home opener. Yesterday was the home opener for Cleveland. Watson was 16 to 30 for 144 yards, but he protected the football. Just two, no interceptions, just two touchdowns, just two sacks taking. Quinchan Judkins is really developing into a good NFL running back. And they've got some receivers, man. Denzel Boston loved him coming out of Washington. Casey Concepcion from A&M, and Harold Fanon Jr. is an underrated tight end in this league,

and he is clearly one of those guys that Deshawn Watson is looking for. Their defense is good. They are two and one, the Browns are, with a Thursday night game at home against the Steelers. A Steelers team that I had in the smell test, they won outright over the Bengals, 30 to 27. I was paying attention to this game at 1 o'clock while our game was going on. I had this one on the other screen. A couple of things. Anybody that tells you that Aaron Rogers just can't do it anymore, he's old,

they're not watching the games. There's no chance. I mean, tell me that you're not watching the game without telling me you're not watching the game. Yesterday, 19 of 34 for 2.92, three touchdowns and one pick. The one pick was a drop. Ball was right in the hands of his receiver, Roman Wilson. He dropped it and ended up being deflected into an interception. He's got to have a receiving core.

I haven't looked this up with the most drops on the season led by D.K. Metcalfe, who also is a penalty machine on big plays. The Steelers, I'm telling you, are much better than maybe they showed last week against the Patriots. Jalen Warren is an emerging very good running back. I've liked him the last couple of years. They still are more tight end dominant with Friermouth and Darnel Washington, that huge 6-foot-7-inch dude who had an unbelievable catch and run. Yeah, they beat the Bengals.

And the Bengals imploded a little bit. They had a muffed punt, which was a killer. They had a burrow fumble on the last drive, down three. Burrow through for 282 and three touchdowns, an unbelievable touchdown catching that game, by the way, by T. Higgins, back-to-back weeks where their two receivers have had just impossible catches for touchdowns. But a big win. Look, the AFC North right now, all four teams in the AFC North have started off two and one. The Chiefs got a test against the Dolphins, but they get through that one, 24 to 10. that sets up a massive showdown Sunday in Vegas 425 between the 3-0 Chiefs and the 3-0

Kirk Cousins-led Raiders. Kirk is leading the NFL with nine touchdown passes. He's the first quarterback in NFL history 38 years or older to have three consecutive games of at least three touchdowns. Yesterday he was precise and flawless. 22 of 33 for 248, three touchdowns, no picks. He did get sacked. By the way, Chase Young, two sacks in that game.

Chase Young is becoming an absolute stud pass rusher for the Saints. But the Raiders faced with an 11-point deficit in the second half. They came back with big-time drives and then three consecutive turnovers. actually four technically on the last play, which was a fourth down play. But they've been a turnover creator so far. They get run on here and there. They get chunked on in the passing game, but they've been creating turnovers. Turnovers really do cover up for bad defense.

I think the Raiders have a good defense, not a great defense, but they're leading the league, I think, at this point in takeaways. And Cousins has been terrific. a move that was by Brady and company in L.A. to bring Kirk in to mentor Mendoza. I do think people in that organization thought

there was a chance that they were going to be much better than people thought. And going to New Orleans, a team that's looked good, almost beat Detroit, did beat Baltimore on the road, and Vegas comes back on the road to win it. Big showdown next week in

Vegas, Chiefs and Raiders. The Baltimore Dallas game. All right, I'll just start at the end. First of all, when Dallas got down to the Baltimore two-yard line on their drive that tied it at 31, you know, a prolific offense has to punch it in. I'm sorry, your first and goal at the two-yard line with 23 seconds left. I know they had one-time-out left. You could run it with that one-time-out left. You didn't have to throw it on every play. Prescott got rid of it way too quickly on one of those plays to Pickens. It was the one after the timeout. I understand the concern of getting sacked, you know, and the game ending, but Pickens was open for a

touchdown. He had separation and, and Dak airmailed it. So they kicked the field goal after this prolific offense couldn't punch it in from the two-yard line, you know, with 23 seconds to go and a timeout. And then I think they made a mistake kicking it into the end zone. Seven seconds to go, I don't want to give a team with a timeout the ball at the 35-yard line. I think I got to kick that ball and force them to return it and perhaps eat up four or five seconds. You know, you do have your kick coverage team on the field and you could give up a big return. but 35-yard line is one big chunk throw from a long field goal in this league.

And they made it. I thought it was terrible coverage. The guy that was, they were in man coverage. And the guy that they had in the middle of the field who was covering nobody did not get enough depth. Zay Flowers is obviously a big difference maker for Baltimore. You know, when he was on a list earlier this summer and rated really high as receivers, I was a bit taken aback by that, but he really is very, very good. Man, Dallas just in some of those spots in recent years, they don't get it done.

They don't get it done. They are really good on offense, really good on offense. But I just am not buying that they're like anything close to a contender in the NFC. The Jets really hung in there with the Lions. I mean, Gino Smith is having a year. 31 to 37 for 321 yards and three touchdowns. I will say this. The Detroit defense is an absolute mess right now.

The Lions got the win. They've won 31 to 30 over the Saints and 31 to 24 over the Jets at home with that loss at Buffalo in that first Thursday night game on their resume at this point. the Washington's opponent, Indianapolis, went to Houston or hosted Houston in a game that was massive for the Texans. A team that I believe certainly had a chance to be a Super Bowl contender. They're off to an 0 and 3 start.

They've rallied from poor starts the last couple of years to make the playoffs. But Daniel Jones, pretty solid, although he had in the game three turnovers. So not that solid, but he made some really big time throws without Alec P. years. You know, Josh Downs, Keenan Allen, after that off-the-field incident in Indy, had a touchdown catch. Tyler Warren, I'm going to tell you, that is a tough, tough check. They may not have a JSN or a CD Lamb, but Tyler Warren is one of the best young tight ends in the game. And of course, they've got Jonathan Taylor, man. Hopefully Washington can stop the run. Indy in this game prevails. They could have easily beating the Chiefs on Sunday night.

They could easily be a two and one football team. They got blown out by the Ravens in the opener, but they're favored for a reason. They're not a terrible team at this point. The Patriots are a mess right now. Drake May is a turnover

machine. Two interceptions, a fumble in the game. Trevor Lawrence, to me, looks like he's ready to take the next step. 35 to 6 was the final score. I do want to just mention something. It was a very interesting and weird play.

Trevor Lawrence scrambled for 15 yards on a third and four at the New England's 16 yard line with just under nine minutes to go in the game leading 28 to 6. And he could have waltzed into the end zone for a touchdown. And he went down at the one. Hey, Trevor, you don't know. have to start worrying about running the clock out with nine minutes to go up 28 to 6. Just take it into the end zone. What are we doing here?

Have you guys seen that play? It is an odd play. He's running into the end zone. Nobody's near him. And he goes down, takes a knee at the one yard line. And by the way, they scored on the next play. They scored on the next play. So they didn't eat a lot of clock up.

It was just odd to see. He's playing, though, good football. I've talked about Jacksonville. I love them at the end of last year. They are excellent on defense. They really are a good defensive football team. Chris Rodriguez is a good player right now for them. He had eight carries 37 yards for touchdown yesterday. Average 4.6 yards per carry Tutin.
