You don't want it.
You don't need it, but you're going to get it anyway.
The Kevin Sheehan Show.
He is Kevin.
He has an injury question.
So as far as Jaden, he had great reach.
It was awesome to have him back on the field in a limited fashion.
He'll be out tomorrow.
Marcus, Sunday, Marcus will start.
So there it was.
Earlier this morning, Dan Quinn in London, making it official.
Jaden Daniels is out for Sunday.
Marcus Mariotto.
will start. He did answer a question about how close Jaden got to playing this weekend. You'll hear that in a
moment. This show's presenting sponsors, always, Window Nation 86690 Nation, windownation.com if you need
new windows. Smell test coming up at the end of the show, no smell test picks tonight. Jay Gruden
coming up next segment will get Jay's thoughts on the team's performance last
week against Seattle. He'll preview and pick the game on Sunday. Let me just give you a heads
up. I recorded that with Jay before the official news on Jaden being out was broken or, you know,
discussed by Dan Quinn. But we did make the assumption that Marcus Marriota would be the
starter for the purposes of the conversation. He felt that Marcus was probably going to start. And as you
guys know my hunch all week has been that Marcus would start on Sunday. So we'll do that with Jay.
We'll get Jay's lock of the week a football Friday here on the show. Last night's Thursday night
game was a hell of a football game. Crazy, right? The Browns at 3 and 1 and currently atop the
AFC North. Think about that. Cleveland and the Raiders, along with Arizona and Miami,
had the lowest over-under-win totals heading into the season.
The Raiders are 3-0 tied for first place.
Cleveland is 3-1.
I got to say that I think Cleveland is legit on defense,
super legit on defense.
And Deshaun made a couple of mistakes,
but for the most part, he was pretty solid.
And they've got playmakers.
I loved that guy, Denzel Boston, coming out of Washington.
He looks really good at wide receiver.
They've got Casey Concepcion from Texas A&M.
He looks good.
They've got Harold Fanon in his second year at tight end.
They're pretty good.
It'll come down to Watson and can he continue to play at the level he's been playing at?
But the Browns get the Jets next week on the road.
That could be four in one.
And then they have a huge game against the Ravens.
The AFC North may be all season long.
the most competitive top to bottom division in the NFL.
All four teams in the games they play against each other are going to be huge.
I did, of course, see the back and forth between Mike McCarthy and Aaron Rogers.
I don't personally make a big deal out of it.
These two have been together for so long, and I'm sure that was a competitive environment moment.
I thought Aaron Rogers was incredible last night, especially in the fourth quarter against a very good defense.
But that comeback to tie it was huge.
Entertaining game.
The baseball game last night, I was hoping to continue to get the chance to watch Bryce Harper in the postseason.
Philly made a mistake starting Aaron Nola.
I don't think there's any doubt about it.
They basically lost the game with him in the top of the first when they got behind three to nothing.
And I did watch the end of that WNBA game between Vegas and Indiana.
Look, I love Caitlin Clark.
She's awesome.
The elbow she took was completely unintentional.
It bloodied her pretty good.
She is dramatic and she does complain a lot.
There is no doubt about that.
I don't know if it can make her any more, you know, polarizing.
I think she's more popular than polarizing.
but anyway, entertaining game.
That Asia Wilson's the best player in the league, without a doubt.
And I watch very little WNBA,
but the WNBA that I've watched really last year for the first time
because of Caitlin Clark's presence in the league,
I think that Asia Wilson's the best player that I've seen,
and I think most people would agree with me.
All right, this was Dan Quinn on a follow-up from John Kime
on how close Jaden got to playing this.
week.
Dan, how close was Jayden to possibly being an option for this week?
For shortly, anytime you can practice, that's a big deal.
And so for him to get back, that was a big step for us, John, to see what it looked like
and where it would go.
Typical for him, like, you know, he's more ready than you expect.
So that's just kind of how he is.
But we'll get a whole week for him and get back at it, get his elbow, his body, everything
back right.
But it was really impressive to see it.
week, everybody. He's going to get a full week of practice, a full week of getting used to the brace,
and he'll go, I think, next Sunday against the Giants at home. All right, keys to a win on Sunday with Marcus
Mario da Silva starting at quarterback against the Colts. I watched a lot of Colts yesterday.
And I'm going to start with this before I get to the specific keys. This is just a completely different
team than Washington has faced the last two weeks in terms of the Colts offense.
Without Alec Pierce, they just don't have any true vertical threats.
They don't have any separators.
Josh Downs is a good receiver.
He's a good NFL receiver.
I think Tyler Warren is a good NFL tight end.
Not a separator, though.
More yards after catch.
They have Keenan Allen on the team.
He had those off-the-field issues.
he can still run routes and catch balls in contested situations.
But this is not a team that's going to threaten down the field.
And there's no CD Lamb, there's no pickings, there's no JSN,
there's no Cooper Cup for that matter.
There's no Rashid Shaheed.
This is a team that wants to grind it out.
You know, Jonathan Taylor is obviously a superstar back,
and people will look at his average yards per carry and say,
whoa, he's struggling this year.
3.9 yards per carry.
He's never had a season in which he was less than 4.4 yards per carry,
and his career average coming into this year was 5 yards per carry.
Jonathan Taylor's been a superstar running back in this league.
They're going to try to run the football,
and they're going to pound him even if Washington's run defense is legit
and can stop him for 2-yard gains, 3-yard gains.
because they want to get into manageable down-and-distance situations
because they feel like they can convert with Daniel Jones' tight window throws to Warren
to Josh Downs to Jonathan Taylor out of the backfield.
They had 15 third down attempts last week against Houston.
People will look at the Houston offense and say, what happened?
Well, they didn't have the ball.
They ran 20 less plays than the Colts did.
This is going to be easy in terms of our defense against the offense it's facing compared to the last two.
Will they be successful?
I hope so.
If they give up explosives and that's a problem against the Colts on Sunday, that's going to be a problem for a while.
I don't expect it, though.
I love the matchup our defense against their offense.
So I'm going to start with Washington wins if they stop the run.
And when I say stop the run, I'm talking about really stopping it cold.
Creating second and eights, second and nines, second and tens.
They've had a bunch of TFLs in the run game.
That's been incredibly helpful, you know, the last three weeks of the season,
certainly against Philly and against the Seahawks.
But you've got to keep them in uncomfortable down and distant situations,
or they're going to stay on the field.
and that's their best defense because their defense isn't very good.
Their best defense is staying on the field and against a great defense last week,
they stayed on the field and ran 20 more plays and had 10 minutes more of time of possession.
And it wasn't because they were explosive.
I think Jonathan Taylor still looks like Jonathan Taylor, despite the average yards per carry.
He's always capable of a big one.
That is for sure.
You've got to have those edge setters O.A. and Chase on play the way they've been playing.
Pain and Kinlaw and settle.
Stopping the run and keeping them an uncomfortable second longs, third and half the throws.
And you got a really good chance to win the game.
Offensively, this should be a good matchup again.
The Colts are not a very good defensive team.
They have DeForest Brunner.
He's still, you know, he can still play.
he's still one of the better defensive tackles in the game.
But he hasn't been like, statistically it's funny because my producer on radio said,
DeForest Buckner is way up there in a lot of advanced numbers for de-tackles.
And I'm like, I watch the Chiefs game live and I watch the old 22 of the Houston game or much of it.
Yeah, he pops, but he's not the dominant player that he's been at times when he's been healthy.
I like some of their talent, but they have not played well.
They have given up a lot.
And I think that Washington for the first time will be able to run the football with some level of consistency,
which they have not done in the first three games.
I'll be interested to know if it'll be with Austin Echler.
I think Rashad White's going to be out.
By the way, Chigacan Quote and Frankie Louvo are both in.
But yeah, I think that Washington,
can establish the run, and I think that is my second key is stick with the run, which is
something David Blow's done, and I think that will create opportunities in the past game that
they can take advantage of with Diggs, with Terry, with Antonio Williams, and this week with
Chigacanquo. I like the matchup for Washington's offense as well. Next up, Washington cannot make
big errors. And this is where
I would just say Marcus was
really solid last week. He had that
one near pick. But we know
Marcus. You know, last year's
game in Spain, the overtime interception.
I think this is going to be a
highly competitive close football
game and they have to avoid
the big mistake. I don't
think they need plus one,
plus two in the turnover margin. If they get it,
they're going to win the game.
But I don't think they need it to win the game.
They need to avoid
the Marcus Mario da Fumble slash interception in a very bad spot.
Cannot have that Sunday to win a close game against Indy.
Lastly, the penalties have to be a lot less.
You cannot derail drives or extend drives with penalties.
I didn't love some of the calls last week.
They've got to be definitely more buttoned up,
especially at the line of scrimmage offensively.
Those are the keys for me.
I'll just tell you that their kickers good and their punters good,
but our punters pretty good as well.
I think this is a game in which if you can defensively make indie punt
and not let them stay on the field by grinding out, you know, 11, 12, 13, 14 play drives,
even if they only end in field goal, you got a real good chance of winning.
If not, it's going to be frustrating because Indy's done a good job of staying on the field.
Washington's only two games internationally have been overtime games.
The overtime tie against Cincinnati back in 2016
and last year's 16 to 13 overtime loss in Madrid.
I like this game to be very close.
I'll go with a third international series overtime game.
By the way, there's only been one in London during this international series,
which started back in 2007.
and that was Washington Cincinnati.
I like Washington to win the game 23 to 20.

All right. Joining me right now, the former head coach of the Washington Redskins, Jay Gruden.
Jay joins me every Friday on the show.
Jay and his brother, John, are doing the Gruden Family Football Show,
which is a weekly show comes out on Wednesdays on YouTube,
and it's part of the Barstool Sports menu,
and it is very, very entertaining.
So check it out Wednesdays, the Gruden Family Football Show.
So last week, when we recorded this segment,
we didn't have the news that Jaden wasn't going to go on injured reserve,
wasn't going to get surgery. And I do want to make it clear to everybody that Jay and I are recording
the segment this week before any news about the starting quarterback comes out on this Friday from
London. Dan Quinn will hold a press conference later on this morning. We are recording this
early in the morning on Friday. So by the time you guys listen to this, you might know
who the starting quarterback is. But since we don't know,
I'm going to ask you, you were last week an advocate of strapping it up and playing football,
unless there was something significantly wrong with the elbow that required some sort of surgery.
Other than that, you thought that it made sense for Jaden to put the brace on and play football.
What do you think will happen this week?
I think we all know he's coming back and he's going to play,
but what is your best guess as to who starts on Sunday,
Jaden or Marietta?
I would probably say Marioada on Sunday to give Jade another week to make sure that thing's sturdy.
Make sure when he takes a snap, it doesn't hurt.
I think that would be the only issue going forward is when that ball pops his hand
and does that elbow have any pain would probably be the only issue I would have.
But I would probably give him another week just to make sure everything's good and he feels right and up to it.
But, I mean, if the doctor say he's good to go this week and Jayden feels good about it, I'd let him go.
But I'd probably get another week with me.
Yeah, I mean, you know, there's been actually some talk and mostly fan talk, a little bit of media talk, that if Jaden's ready to go, that's fine, but start Marioota and use Jaden as a backup.
To me, that doesn't make any sense at all. Does it make any sense to you?
No, no, no. I would, if Jaden's going to be out, I'd keep him out and inactive.
If he's ready to go, then he's playing.
because if Marcus
a couple bad passes early
the game,
just gonna go to Jaden.
I mean,
if that's the case,
just go to Jaden right now.
You know,
if he's going to play,
if you're going to play,
if it's not,
then don't plan.
One of the other.
One of the other.
What did you think of Marcus
Mario de last week?
I thought he's great.
I thought his decision-making was
excellent.
I think he made some plays with his legs.
I mean,
the zone read at the end of the game,
the deal is a very critical point in the game.
I think he's a good play.
I think he's better than a lot of the starters right now in the NFL.
So it's a great luxury for Washington to have that when you're starting quarterback who's
on the top quarterback to NFL goes out, you have a backup who's pretty damn good.
And it's very, very important in the NFL nowadays.
You see all the quarterback's going out.
And a lot of backup quarterback's one last week, and you saw Caseyden to do it.
So very important to have that position to be solid.
So when your quarterback does go out, you're not going to be that far off.
A little bit off, but not that bad.
I want to ask you about that third and seven.
the one that iced the game, the pull on the zone read.
Third and seven, if he gives, Rashad White's not going to get the first down, I don't think.
He has to pull it, I think, if they've got any shot to get the first down.
First of all, do you agree with that?
Forget the read that he had, which was DeMarcus Lawrence crashing down,
and that was the right read.
But do you agree that the only way they were going to get the first down running the football
was if he pulled it on the zone read?
No, no.
If he gives it, it's because
DeMarcus Lawrence comes up the field, and there's
might be a hole there, he might get the first down.
You know, so he made the right read.
That's an unblocked defender, and it puts the
numbers in your favor on the zone read because
you don't have to block a person. And DeMarcus
Lawrence is a very important part of
the run on the inside zone. If you don't block
them, you read them. So
I think it was a great call. It's a good read, and
obviously it worked out. Typically, when
the end crashes, the linebacker
holds over the top, and it's sometimes a dead
play on both occasions, but
Seattle, for whatever reason, did not
have the linebacker scraping over the top,
and it worked out great for Washington. It was
a good play, good play design, good call. I mean, it's
a non-risk play, really.
It's a chance to
make Seattle use a timeout, worst-case
scenario, you have to punt, back and way up,
and let your defense go to work.
Yeah, that defense go to work.
The drive previous was five plays
68 yards in a minute six.
No, I totally
understand the
read, and I know that he pulled it because
DeMarcus Lawrence was crashing down, but you've seen
before quarterbacks pull it in a wrong read
situation, and they're able to avoid the
D.N or the outside edge that's playing him, and
still make a play. For me, it was like, if he gives
there, maybe the back gets three or four yards, but he
doesn't get seven. The only way they were getting seven
without throwing the football was for Mario to make a play.
Probably right
But we'll never know because
DeMarcus wants to crash down
perfectly and we kept it
But if he does come up the field
There is a back cut
You know there's a cut back
Where a possibility of a first down
You know you've seen some inside belt
For a 7, 8, 9 yards
So there's a possibility you get the first down
With a light box again coming up the field
Let me ask you
If he had played quarterback
And he had given it to the back
And the back had gotten let's say
4 or 5 yards
And it's 4th and 2 or 4th and 3
given what the defense had just done
and you missed the extra point
because of the unsportsman-like conduct
so you only led by two.
Would you have punted it at the Seattle
that would have been at their
would have been at their,
call it their 40-yard line,
fourth and three,
or would you have considered going for it
or even kicking the field goal?
I would consider going forward or kicking a field.
Probably going for it because no few goals are given
on that field.
He just missed the extra point, yeah.
Yeah, yeah, I probably would have gone forth there.
Forth and two, fourth and five, I probably would have punted to try to back them up.
Trisway is really, really good at back of people up, put them at their own six, seven-yard line,
and make them go 55 yards, 60 yards.
Jason Myers is a really good kicker, so ideally you're probably going to go forth and try to steal a deal
and get the hell out of the wind.
But we don't have to worry about that decision.
That would have been a tough one for push-win.
That would have been you're probably, if you're punt it,
and they go down and get a few goal, you're a moron.
If you go forth and don't get it,
and they get 15 years to get a first out here, a moron.
So that's the lose-lose decision for Coach Quinn.
They're a good thing it didn't have to happen.
Well, you know, Jay, I've talked about this all week.
Just sort of the fine line between being absolutely skewered by fans and media
versus everybody feels great.
You just upset the defending champs.
And now, hey, we might be able to beat Indy and the Giants to get to three and two.
But if they hadn't picked up either one of the champions,
those two first downs on the final drive. And Seattle had won on a walk-off field goal 34 to 33.
All of the talk would have been about how undisciplined the team is to allow Frankie Louvo
to run out onto the field and taunt, you know, Seattle after the pick six. And we had Stefan Diggs in
week one hugging the goalpost. I mean, it is without the third and nine run by Rashad White and the third and
seven run on the pool by Marcus Marioada.
It is a far different week more likely than not.
It always is, Kevin.
It always is.
A difference in wins and losses.
The whole attitude in the building, the fan base, everybody, it's just a totally different
feeling.
And games come down on the wire.
That's why you're kicking games important.
Referee calls are important.
Decisions on third and fourth down are important.
I mean, when you're a team that, you know, you're really an average type team
for snow-wise, you need every break.
break. You need every decision to go your way, especially when you're playing against the team like
Seattle. And fortunately, Washington got a lot of good breaks in that game. Well, you called it last week.
You said they're going to have to be plus two, plus three in the turnover margin to have a chance.
And that's what it was, plus three. And they needed all three of them. And they turned all three of
them into touchdowns. And that ended up being the difference in the game. But just back to what we
were just talking about. Because, you know, when you were the coach here, there were so many of
those games because of what you just described. Our team was one of those 25, 26, 27 teams that are
literally a bounce of the ball, an injury or two away from somewhere between, you know,
six and 10 and 10 and 6 back in your day when they were playing 16 games. And I think sometimes
the losses get so magnified, so do the wins. And it's such a fine, fine line in terms of what
determines so many games. Last week was a record for a Sunday in the NFL 12, one-score games
of the 14 played. But was that for you, especially when you were on the wrong side of one of those
games that could have easily gone your way? And you played well and you did all the right
things. Would you stew over it on a Monday? Would you go back to that one or two plays?
How did you deal with the fact that the league really is so close?
It's tough, man.
It's a grind, and you have to really, that's why every decision you make is very, very critical.
In the first quarter, second quarter, they all build up to the final score of the game.
And then you look at the games that you could have won at the end of the season,
you're a game away from a playoff.
You're like, my God, if we just beat Cincinnati week three,
if we just made that extra point against London, I mean, we'd have been nine and eight or nine and seven made the playoffs.
You lose a close game.
And they all add up, and people like, hey, we've got 13 games left, but these games matter.
I mean, this game against Indianapolis Sunday
matters a lot as far as the future scope of the record
and wild card and division champions and all that stuff.
So you've got to take every play for what it is.
They're all very, very important plays.
Important situations, two-minute drills at the end of the half.
I mean, every situation is critical nowadays in the NFL
because it's so much parity.
Yeah.
I mean, I always think about the 2016 season,
and I know we do this a lot,
but it's because I remember these seasons,
and you coached them, so you remember them better than I do.
But that season, you just go back to so many Dustin Hopkins missed kick in London, as you said,
31-yarder in overtime.
And instead of a win, it's a tie.
He missed a big kick in Detroit when you guys could have won the game.
He missed two on Thanksgiving Day in that unbelievable shootout with the Cowboys.
There were just, like, you just go back through that season, and it's like,
And then, of course, you know, there are plays that are made that go in your favor that win a close game that the other teams, you know, bitching about.
But, God, that year in particular was one of the more frustrating years for me as a fan of the team because I thought the offense was legitimately a Super Bowl offense.
Now, the defense was the opposite of that.
But I wanted to see it in the playoffs.
Yeah, yeah.
And a lot of teams feel the same way when the season's over.
man, you look back, you're like,
hey, we were good enough.
We were better than the teams that are in the playoffs.
God's sake.
This would have happened, or if I would have happened,
or if I would have just done this or called this player,
use my last time out, or, you know,
there's so many ifs and gifts that'll
drive you and say, that's the duty of coaching it.
And that's why, you know, you just got to hope
the goodness that your players make the plays
and you make the right decisions.
Really, at the end of the day, as a coach,
you're really hoping that a decision that you made
a critical one that doesn't cost your team
a game or a chance to go to the playoffs.
That's what drives you up.
That's what keeps you up at night, man.
I should have gone four-dop, down, or I should have punted, or I should have kicked a field goal.
You know, there's so many of those decisions that drive you to drink.
And, yeah, in fact, I'm having a cocktail right now.
Yeah, why wouldn't you?
Yeah, by the way, that's what we call, you know, before a golf round, that's our warm-up.
That's our range, a cocktail or two.
Right.
You know, I know that they warm up nowadays.
Yeah, exactly.
Warming up is not something I'm interested in.
I'll walk right to the first day.
By the way, I know people are listening and they're like,
Shan, stop doing the 2016 season.
Your boy threw a pick to Dominic Rogers Cromarty to end the season.
Yes, that did happen.
That did happen.
Run it for the first down.
Just run it for the first down.
It was two men.
He can't throw a dagger on two men.
He's going to undercut it.
How about how well he's playing?
He's doing great, man.
I love it.
They're a pretty good team, man.
Brock Bowers.
Coming back is fun to watch them.
And they use them like we use Jordan Reed.
He's all over the place.
They're pretty damn good.
I mean, in watching Bowers last week, he truly is, he's a wide receiver.
He lined up as a wide receiver, you know, split out wide, I think, like 75% of the time.
He's never an inline, tight end.
Yeah, we used to, you know, we used to sell Kirk that, you know, when we put Jordan Reed outside, you know, against the corner,
we probably don't like the matchup as much, you know, but Brock Bowers, they don't care if those corners out there or not.
They're throwing the damn ball.
Right.
Yeah, he's, you know, and then the option route,
he runs on linebackers is ridiculous.
It's damn near undefendable.
So they got a good thing going.
They just got to get some little bit more help from the receivers.
Straight Tucker's not bad, but, and then the running game's got to get going.
Ash and Jetschry, got to be a little bit better.
They're pretty good.
They're hell of a lot better.
They're first picking a draft last year, and their first round draft pick's not even playing.
Yeah.
That's off to Clint Coupiac and Kirk.
They're doing great.
I'll get you to pick that game coming up here shortly.
But let's get back to our team.
And I just want to get your thoughts on the defense through three games.
Obviously, it faced two very good offensive teams in a row in Dallas and Seattle.
They gave up 393 passing yards last week.
Got the takeaways, though.
But just what are you seeing with this team defensively through three games?
I feel like their effort is outstanding.
You can't coach effort.
You really can't.
These guys got to buy in to the fact that you run to the ball.
Everybody runs the ball.
I mean, Smith and Jigba beat everybody to death.
So it's not like you're going to shut him down.
I mean, there's so many ways they use him and put him in the middle field and a slot outside by himself.
So you're going to give up some yards to the Super Bowl defending chance.
That's going to happen.
But you can't coach effort.
And I feel like they have hats with the ball.
They're all running to the ball.
They're playing physical.
They understand how they might be a little bit limited athletically and size-wise and all that stuff in certain positions.
You make up for that by your effort and enthusiasm.
I think they play with great effort.
I think that's off the new defensive coordinator and Coach Quinn for getting that out of them.
Back to the offense, what kind of job do you think David Blow is doing so far?
Great. I think he did a great job last week. I think a lot of coaches, it's easy to call players maybe in the first second quarter,
but when you get to the fourth quarter and four-minute drill, you've got to steal the deal.
Getting those two first downs and shot wide, I think that might have been a run-autobole.
You know, they're going to say overload the front, the rant of the open side, and there was a good run call.
And then the phone read to Marcus Fogger, too, very good calls.
And I like the way he's utilizing everybody.
You know, I mean, you can't just say, oh, it's Terry McCorn.
No, they're utilizing everybody.
I mean, Williams and Diggs and even Burke's had a touchdown.
So I like the way he's utilizing everybody on the field and making important calls in a key situation, at least he did last week.
All right, let's look ahead to Sunday.
And let's just assume, because I'm with you, I think Mario is going to start as well,
and Jaden will start next week against the Giants.
So tell me what's important in this game for Washington to win it.
then go ahead and give me your pick.
Well, I think the same thing.
They have to make sure they really get a handle on Johnson-Taylor.
He hasn't been great, but he's got a chance to takeover games.
And I think they didn't have an offense is a methodical type 12-play 80-yard offense.
You know, they have the short game.
Josh Downs is really good intermediate receiver.
But it's going to rely on Johnson-Taylor and Daniel Jones's legs to keep driving alive.
But if they get off the field on third down, I think third down is going to be,
it is every week, but especially this week.
to keep your defense off the field and keep your defense fresh.
Convert third downs and stop in third downs will be critical.
But I think Indianapolis right now is a big win for them.
That's the key for them.
They just got to get third manageable, get Johnson Taylor going,
and Washington on the flipside.
Got to stop Johnson-Taylor.
Then on third down, they've got to get Keenan Allen and Josh Downs and checked.
All right.
So what happens?
I don't know.
I think it's going to be a great game.
This is going to be a game.
Both teams are one and two, I believe.
and I think this is the winning team is going to feel really, really good after the first quarter of the season
after the start to get back to two and two.
Two-game win streak there to get back to 500 is going to be critical for both teams.
Fall into one and three, climbing up until for the next month, two months to try to get back in the race is going to be very hard.
But I think Washington and Marriota, I think, have a very good opportunity.
Just a matter of can we stop the run?
And we've done pretty, not we, but they've done pretty good stop on the run this year.
Surprisingly, I thought that would be their weak link of their team,
but stopping the pass has been difficult for them.
And Indiana is not a great passing team,
so I think Washington has a really good chance.
What was it like playing in London?
What were the challenges, if any?
Just to travel.
You know, the travel, he just kind of wears you down.
And I wasn't, I didn't want to go early.
I didn't want to spend a week out there.
I want to have as much normal sleep to the week as we possibly could fly out there
and get some rest and then practice one day
and then get the hell on the field and play and get out of there.
So it's just a matter of getting out there,
the field, the footing, and all that stuff, and going out there and playing football games.
It's really, at the end of the day, you're playing earlier.
You're in a different country, but it's still going to be football.
They've still got to strap it up, play a great enthusiasm and great effort, like they have been doing.
All right.
We'll come back with Jay, talk about the rest of the NFL card and get his lock of the week
after these words from a few of our sponsors.
Isn't it nice that football's finally back, and prize picks knows it?
they've brought out their best offer yet.

That's right.
If you win your first $5 lineup, you'll get $150 in lineups.
Prize picks has been and is my go-to daily fantasy sports app,
and it's the most entertaining way to watch a game,
especially those games in standalone prime time,
when you may not have an interest,
way or the other. Well, prize picks gives you an opportunity to have some interest. It's very
easy to use. You simply pick between two and six players and their projected stats either going
more or less than that projected number. Like tonight, when I'm going more than 72 and a half
rushing yards for Sequin Barclay, a bit of a contrarian play, you know me, because he's coming off
that injury that he suffered last week in Nashville against Tennessee.
And I think more people are thinking less than 72 and a half yards.
Last week, I was less on Cam Scataboo's yards on Monday night football against the Rams.
It hit this particular time I'm going more than 72 and a half rushing yards for Sequin Barclay.
You can follow the result of this watching the game tonight or if you're hearing this later in the week,
You can go back and see if I was right or wrong.

What did you think of the game last night?
The Browns are at three and one.
Talk about trying to figure this league out.
It's impossible.
But they're at three and one after 2724 win over Pittsburgh.
Give me your big takeaways from last night.
It was a great game, and I think Cleveland has done a great job. Coach Monkin has really been excellent getting that team back after the first week, the Backel getting absolutely destroyed by the Jaguars.
And everybody's just saying that Cleveland was going to be the worst team in pro football.
And Sean Watson's stinks and quarterback controversy, he silenced it all by winning three games in a row.
And they've done it with defense, offense, the running game has been non-existent pretty much.
But they figure out ways to win, and that's what the pro football is all about, man.
You don't have to, you don't get any foul points.
You just got to figure out a way to get more points than your opponent at the end of the day.
Their offensive fire rank 28 or 29th in the league, their defense isn't that good.
But somehow, there's three and one, and they find ways to do it.
It was a great game.
I think their defense looks really good.
I mean, I know that Jacksonville that week one result, but since then, that defense has looked really good,
even though it doesn't have Miles Garrett anymore.
Yeah, here is exactly right.
I thought, you know, watching Jacksonville go up and down the field,
This is the worst defense I've seen a long time.
And they came back and really have played well.
They did good against Aaron Rogers pretty good.
I mean, Aaron had a great game against Cincinnati a week before everybody was on their
off the two weeks ago.
And then they put up a gaudy numbers against Cincinnati.
And then, you know, they played pretty good against Cleveland.
But Cleveland held their own and did a good job.
So you just can't figure out this league, man.
Sometimes I watch so much film, you know,
I work with my brother on the show that I'd look at these people.
These guys are terrible.
They play and they win.
I'm like, how the hell they win?
You know?
Yeah.
I mean, that's what I kind of figure with Cleveland.
I mean, I can't get the Jacksonville game out of my head how bad they were both sides of the ball.
And now they're three and one.
So what a difference a week makes, what a difference two weeks makes,
and hopefully that's the case for Washington this week.
After two games, everybody was like, not going to be a good team.
I have a chance to be two and two in the division, possibly.
Week one's always kind of weird.
Tell me what's going on with Drake May.
A lot.
He's not very good right now for whatever reason.
It doesn't look like he has a lot of confidence in the receivers.
the plays, anything, and he's floating the ball.
It doesn't look like he has any like zipping his ball right now.
Balls are like just floating out there for whatever reason.
He just does not find a lot of confidence in anything that he's doing.
His decision-making has been really poor.
So, yeah, we know he's got to talent him because he took the team of the Super Bowl last year, for God's sake.
He was really good.
This year he doesn't look good.
I mean, it's like CJ Strattis for sure you look like one of top quarterbacks in the league.
Now he's kind of wandered off to do they want to keep him for the next, you know,
four or five years?
he don't even know if they want to keep him now.
He's got to bounce back fast.
He's got to get some confidence,
and Coach McDaniels got to do a good job of getting him involved early,
get some bleachers under his belt,
screens, slants, whatever it is,
and then take some shots later again,
but he's not looking good at all right now.
I can't stick up for him because the polls he's throwing her right to the defense.
They look like they're popped lives, and it's not good.
What do you do with a talented player that's lost his confidence?
I don't know.
You just got to figure out.
You've got to pump him up
and try to get them to regain it somehow
some way. Like I said, early in games, you've got to get
them some completions, maybe take the couple
maybe, I don't know, it's hard
to regain confidence once you lose it, but
hopefully that's not the case. It's
a young, talent player. I think
Drake has to use his athleticism
a little bit more. A play is not there.
His strength is running
the football. He's a really good runner, and I think
he needs to get like 40, 50 years rushing,
keep drives alive with his legs and not trying to force
balls in the coverage like he's doing right now.
Minnesota's defense is awesome to watch.
It's incredibly well coached.
But can they do anything with Kyler Murray or Carson Wentz at quarterback?
Yeah, I think Kyle will be fine.
Eventually, I think Kevin's doing a pretty good job.
He's trying to get a feel for what Kyler is good at.
It's going to take a little bit of time with them working together.
In the meantime, hell, just on it and let this damn Brian Forreys unit come out there
just crying job.
I mean, they are a violent group.
I'm telling you what, if you're a running back and you're playing against the Minnesota Vikings,
you better buckle up because they are going to blitz and they're going to make sure that they use you at protection.
Deanwell and Bucking Irving last week, I mean, they got bludgeoned.
I mean, it was unbelievable watching this defense.
But I think to answer your question, I think they'll be good.
Justice Jefferson will probably come back this week, and I think they'll be okay.
I think they're going to be just fine.
In the meantime, let your defense win the games for you until your offense gets rolling.
And if they do get rolling, Minnesota Vikings will be a very, very dangerous team.
Well, that's what I was really asking is, are they a Super Bowl contender?
When you have a defense like this, yes, I think you beat anybody.
I mean, you see what they did to the Bears, and the Bears have played pretty damn good football offensively.
They couldn't get a foot, I guess, Minnesota.
So, yes, we've seen great defenses and average offenses win Super Bowl.
You look at Baltimore, Trent Biltre.
They weren't very good on offense, but they want a Super Bowl because their defense was dominant.
and all the Pittsburgh teams in the past.
I had Big Ben, but great defenses can win you, a lot of games,
and take you to the big dance.
By the way, were you surprised with Case Keenham's performance on Monday night?
You coached him.
You know what? The way they used them, I think, is perfect.
You know, his limitations are probably thrown a deep ball and all that stuff.
He saw some balls floating out there, but for the most part,
Case is a game manager, he could make some plays and keep drives alive,
and the running game is strong, and Ben Jopson did a really good job of understanding
what he's good at.
and Case is a good player.
He's going to be prepared.
There's no pre-snap penalties in this case.
You're not going to have delay games in both parts.
This guy's going to know the play,
know where to go with a ball.
If it's not there, he'll throw it away.
He's not going to make any outstanding plays,
highlight plays, but at the end of the day,
he's going to be an efficient guy.
If he played good defense, he could win with Chase,
and he proved it.
He's a good quarterback.
You don't want him to play 16 games for God's sake,
but to come in and spell Caleb Williams for a few weeks.
Hell yeah.
All right.
Let's look at a couple of the games
and then finish up with your lock of the week.
I know you love this team, and I do too,
and watching them at the end of last year and so far this year.
But this is a big game in the AFC, Jags at Bengals.
So tell me what you think about that one.
This will be a great game.
I love the Jaggs right now.
Trevor Lawrence is playing great.
He has is pretty good.
Tootin is not bad, but Parker Washington and Jacoby Myers
are two really, really good receivers are tight ends of stud.
Their defense is playing pretty damn good.
I think, you know, on a show, on a show I took the Bengals, I think the Jaguars wouldn't.
I think the Bengals is really, really good.
I love when you do this.
I love when you've got the Jags on one show, you've got the Bengals on another.
You can't, look, you're going to win somehow.
Yeah.
But the secondary for the Bengals is too beat up right now to handle Jacksonville right now.
And I don't think the past rush is quite where it needs to be for Cincinnati right now.
So I think the Jaguars score a lot of points.
It's going to be high score for the Cincinnati to win.
They're going to have to score at least 35, 38 points.
about to put anything by Joe Burrow,
Jamar Chase, and T. Higgins and Chase Brown,
they can put up the numbers,
but I just think their defense
is going to leak a little bit of oil, and I think that's going to get it done.
Two teams are pretty desperate this week.
Houston can't go 0-and-4.
They did go 0-3 last year and make the playoffs.
They've got Dallas at home,
and then the Rams, after a game,
they probably shouldn't have lost on Sunday night football.
That pass interference penalty was terrible.
they've got the Eagles on the road.
And for a team that I think people thought had a chance to win 15, 16, 17 games,
a lost Sunday would drop them to 1 and 3.
So which of those two teams is more likely to win in sort of a desperate need-to-win situation?
I think the Rams beat the hell out of Philly, personally.
I think the Rams are good.
They get Pooka Nakuha back.
They don't have to do a lot of 13 personnel.
All of a sudden they can do 12 personnel and have two-tight-out-of-Fing.
against Devante. Their running game is very, very good.
Their run blocking offensive line is outstanding. They're not as good
pass blocking, but running a football, I think, which
Philadelphia's really having trouble stopping the run right now,
despite the two big guys in the middle. They're really struggling.
So I think the Rams are in good shape right now. They're one and two.
They'll get the two and two, and they'll have a whole season in front of them.
They're still going to be the team to beat, I think, in the NFC.
As far as the Cowboys and the Texas go,
this is a case of a great offense going against a great defense
and a terrible offense
going to get the terrible defense.
So take your pick on that one.
I think Dallas is really, really struggling in the back end.
I know they've got Julie Porter from Pittsburgh,
but I think even the Texans,
if they get Nico Collins,
if Nico Collins plays, I'm taking it Texas.
If he doesn't play, I'm taking the Cowboys.
I think Nico has that big of an impact on the game.
Broncos and 49ers, how good is San Francisco?
They haven't really played anybody other than the Rams in Australia,
but do you believe in them or not?
Yeah, I think they're pretty good.
I think Brock Purdy is playing a very, very, very high.
level. So that gives them a chance to win every game.
I'm concerned about the defense, what Arizona
did to them last week.
And like you mentioned, the schedule hasn't been
very kind to them.
So I would take
Denver in that game.
Chiefs Raiders,
throwback rivalry to
3 and O teams playing in Vegas. That
crowd, by the way, is really,
really good. They are into the Raiders
in Vegas, and I don't know how many,
how much of that is just Raider fans from California.
But who do you like in
why?
Yeah, I think Kansas City right now.
I like the way Kansas City has really established an identity with Kenneth Walker.
Kenneth Walker is excellent player.
I mean, he makes people miss.
He's strong.
He's powerful, and they utilize them in a lot of different ways, a lot of different runs teams.
And then obviously, if that dries up, then you have Patrick,
and Patrick still Dan Patrick, and Travis Kelsey found a fountain of youth.
So, Kansas City's defense is good.
Spags is going to have a great game plan for the Raiders,
and I think Kansas City wins it.
All right, time for your lock of the week.
It's one and two.
You had Houston last week.
Who do you have this week?
I'm taking, I'll tell you what, I watched a lot of film, like I said today,
and I think there's a player that is going to come out and just dominate a game,
and it's going to be my man, Jeremiah, I love.
I'm taking Arizona.
Arizona, it's got some, despite Marvin Harris's Jr.
You're not really doing anything.
Michael Wilson's a hell of a receiver.
They got one hell of a tight-in.
Tray McBride, but this running back is going to be something sick. I'm just telling you,
some of the runs he had, even though they're five or six yards, were just ridiculous.
But I think Arizona, if they could find a way to play a little bit of defense, I think
Jacoby Brousette handed the ball off of this Jeremiah Leaf Freak Show is going to get it done.
You know, I was thinking about them. They had the lowest over-under-win total heading into the
season at three and a half. It was the lowest since like 2017. I think the Jets had a
three and a half over under
wind total for the season back then.
And in watching them,
they have a lot of talent on offense.
And Jacoby Brissette has always been a solid quarterback.
Exactly right.
You know, it's just defensively,
they're not where they want to be.
Obviously, I think that's their Achilles heel right now.
But, I mean, this running back and Jacobi,
if they get the running game going a little bit,
then he's going to have some great looks
to throw the football down the field.
I just, this Marvin Harrison guy just pung to me.
I don't know what the deal is.
He's not running.
He doesn't run it.
It looks like he's jogging all his routes.
But forget him.
I mean, he's looking to Michael Wilson anyway, and he's looking to Tray McBride.
So we got two other, they have two other good weapons that are pretty dang good.
All right.
Thank you for this.
Appreciate it.
Good luck with the lock of the week.
I'll talk to you next week.
Yeah, thanks, Kevin.
The smell test next after these words from a few of our sponsors.
Kevin looks with a John Q Publion.
is putting their cash and does the opposite.
It's time for the smell test.
The smell test, as always, brought to you by my good friends of my bookie.
My bookie's got their lock of the season this weekend.
They do it once a year during the season, and they've got it going on Sunday.
It's Dallas at Houston, and the lock of the year.
This is like a literal no-sweat bet, is Dak Prescott completing one.
pass at any point in the game. If he does that, you double your money. What are the chances
he's not going to complete a pass on Sunday against Houston? Houston's defense is great, but I don't
think Prescott's going 0 for 28. He could get hurt early in the game before completing a pass,
but that is the lock of the season from my bookie. It's being offered at plus 100, even money,
so you double your money if he completes one pass.
Now, you have to go to mybooky.com or my bookie.ag.
And when you sign up, you have to use this promo code.
It's my promo code.
It's Kevin D.C., Kevin D.C.
And then bet the lock of the season.
My bookie's also offering all of my listeners a high roller bonus.
any deposit between $1,500 and $5,000, my bookie is doubling 100% match.
If you're a better and you're betting all season long, you're likely, I don't know what your
bet size is, but for those of you who bet in the, you know, even in the $50 to $100 a game range,
you're going to end up wagering over the course of the year more than $1,500.
take the free money.
They're going to 100% match it.
So if you deposit $1,500, they will add another $1,500 into your account.
Your account balance will be $3,000.
Now, for this particular promotion, the promo code is DCVIP,
DCVIP for the high roller bonus.
All right.
A couple of emails.
to read to you. This from Marcus. Marcus writes,
I finally jump on your stupid smell thing
and you s the bed. He actually spelled out
the four-letter word. Maybe you shouldn't sell it so hard.
I fell for it and lost. I'm back
in for one more week, but please make it right, Kevin.
Marcus, first of all, I actually
sold against it last week.
And I do that a lot.
I understand that sometimes I will
over or undersell
the picks and say, be
careful because I've been on a roll
and it's going to come back. And going
into last weekend, I was 17,
6, and 1
on the year. 73.9%
on the season. And I did
emphasize that it can't
continue. I didn't know if it was going to be
last weekend or this weekend or the weekend.
after, but there's no way.
No one goes 73.9%
or better for a season.
But Marcus, look, man, I'm doing
my best here every week.
I've produced a winning
record so far. I can't help
it that you jumped in on
the wrong week of the stupid
smell thing.
But you're wrong that I didn't
and I really usually don't
oversell it. If anything,
I undersell it and say,
please be careful.
And I would say that to you, Marcus, because you're back in for one week.
Please make it right, Kevin.
I'm going to do my best to make it right.
But my pitch to all of you is if you play this way over the course of a season
and you wager the same amount as a straight bet on every game and you're getting, you know, 95% of the time,
minus 110. You don't want to pay more than minus 110, but the average should be right around
minus 110 that, you know, you have a chance of not getting annihilated. And for 15 of the 20
seasons I've been doing this, you would have won money. Last year, a lot of money at 62.4%.
I always, and I do, I always worry about people like Marcus, because let me just tell you something.
Chase mode is not a good mode to be in as a sports better.
So Marcus, if you really got your nuts kicked in last week and you can't afford to get your nuts kicked in, stop now.
Because I can't guarantee that I'll make it right this weekend.
But I'm going to try.
From O in L.A.
Thanks for the reminder that you can't win betting on football.
L.O.L. I'm not leaving you.
from Polly, and this isn't my friend Pauley from the 757, he writes,
how much did you lose on Saturday?
Damn, I didn't do very well on Saturday.
In fact, I'm going to tell you right now, last Saturday was 3 and 10 on my picks.
I had another four or five games that were close to making it into the smell test last
Saturday.
All four of them, maybe five of them, all of them would have lost.
so it wasn't as bad as it could have been.
And we came back strong on Sunday with a four one-in-one day.
So NFL the last two weeks, 11, 2, and 1.
24-17-1 overall, or 24-17 and 2, excuse me, on the season overall.
All right, let's go to tomorrow.
Nothing tonight.
Let me just mention this first play.
This is one I may pull, and if I do,
do it, I'm going to do it on X. So, you know, follow me at Kevin Shee in D.C. And this game kicks at
1245, Vanderbilt at Georgia. There's a quarterback issue with Vanderbilt. And if that number
changes significantly, I may back off that game. So follow me at Kevin Sheen, D.C. I'm going to
tweet out the, you know, picks probably sometime in the 11 o'clock hour, maybe early in the 12 o'clock hour,
waiting for that information on the Vanderbilt quarterback.
But the pick right now is Vanderbilt plus 25 and a half at Georgia.
Georgia's in look-ahead mode.
They get Bama next week.
Vandy lost a close one to Auburn last week.
I was on Auburn.
And remember the week before that they won that crazy game when NC State's
quarterback trying to take a safety, went forward, got tackled, fumbled.
Vanderbilt fell on it in the end zone and won the game.
I think Georgia is really good
and the public really likes Georgia.
Give me Vandy plus the 25 and a half.
But again, check in with me on X tomorrow,
sometime in the 11 o'clock hour,
early in the 12 o'clock hour.
When I tweet out the picks,
if Vandy's still there, then it's there.
If I've pulled it, I'll say specifically that I pulled Vandy.
Missouri lost last week.
It was a smell test pick at Miss.
Mississippi State. Really good football game.
And Missouri didn't get it done as a five and a half point dog. They had the ball down late in the red zone, down 31, 24, couldn't punch it in.
They were up seven in the fourth quarter in that game. They're getting the exact same number at home, five and a half against Florida off Florida, winning big against Ole Miss. That was one of my winners last week.
this is a classic letdown spot.
I also think Missouri's really good.
The public's on Florida.
Recent impressions.
Give me Missouri at home plus the five and a half.
TCU has struggled.
BYU looks really good,
and yet BYU is only laying six and a half.
I can't find a seven out there,
so I'll take the horn frogs plus this six and a half.
USF is undefeated,
and they're laying less than a touchdown.
against Temple, it's six and a half, and the public's all over USF.
I'll take Temple plus the six and a half.
I do encourage you to buy the half point to get it to plus seven.
That's what I'll be doing.
If I can't find any plus sevens out there, I'm going to give it out based on the number today on Friday afternoon at six and a half.
And then Colorado has lost two in a row and pretty decisive losses to Baylor and Northwestern.
Texas Tech was a big time, you know, overwhelming pick to win the Big 12.
Tim Murray was on the show yesterday.
He really likes Utah.
I do too.
Oklahoma State.
I'm with them on Oklahoma State.
I think they can make a run at the Big 12 title.
I think Texas Tech is a little bit off right now.
They're laying less than two touchdowns, and the public is hammering the Red Raiders.
I'll take Colorado plus the 13 and a half.
Can't find a plus 14 anywhere either.
So I'll give it out at plus 13.
and a half. Those are the five college plays. Let's go to Sunday. Give me the Jets plus three and a half in Chicago.
Chicago short week after the Monday night win, an emotional win without their quarterback. Tyson Badgant may get the start tomorrow. The Jets have played really competitive football through the first three weeks of the season.
The public's on Chicago, there's sharp money on the Jets. I'll take the Jets plus three and a half. The game that I really like a lot, this is, you know, the
NFL, you can't figure it out kind of a game.
I gave out the Chargers last week is my one NFL loss with the same theory,
and that is it'll be so NFL if the Chargers go to Buffalo and win.
And they were up 13 to 10 in the late third quarter when Herbert threw a bad pick.
Same thing with Patriots at Buffalo this week.
Nobody is believing in the Patriots.
Everybody's off Drake May.
Buffalo's laying a touchdown.
I'll take the Pats plus the seven.
Know this about this game.
Buffalo will be the easiest defensive opponent for the Patriots
since the end of the regular season last year.
The Patriots have faced in order as Drake May has fallen apart as a quarterback.
The Chargers defense in the postseason last year,
Houston's defense, Denver's defense, Seattle's defense in the Super Bowl.
and then they opened up this year with Seattle's defense again,
Pittsburgh's defense in week two,
and then Jacksonville's defense last week.
Buffalo is nowhere near as good as any of those teams defensively.
I think the Patriots are going to move the football score points and get the cover.
The public, this was surprising to me.
They're on San Francisco, laying three at home against Denver.
Maybe it's because Denver sort of won that game last Sunday night.
with a horrible call that went against the Rams.
I like Denver this week.
They're anti-public.
I'll take them plus the three.
And then I'll take the Panthers plus three and a half in Sunday night football against the lions.
The lions are atrocious defensively, but they can really score.
And Carolina is coming off that loss to Cleveland.
Kind of a desperate spot for the Panthers.
I like them plus the three and a half.
Let me just mention, I kind of like Atlanta on Monday Night Football plus three at New Orleans.
I'm not giving that out now, but I may give it out on Monday's show.
All right, recapping.
Not 19 plays like last week.
Nowhere near that.
How about nine plays this week?
Vandy plus 25 and a half, but check in on that one before kickoff.
Missouri plus 5.5.
TCU plus 6 and a half.
Temple plus 6 and a half.
Colorado plus 13 and a half.
And then on Sunday, the Jets plus three and a half,
the Patriots plus seven,
Denver plus three,
and Carolina plus three and a half.
And again, I'll let you know about Atlanta on Monday
for another smell test pick for Monday night football.
But that is not an actual play as of yet.
All right, good luck.
Be careful.
And it should be for entertainment purposes only.
moderation, Marcus, moderation.
Chase mode is really depressing.
Really depressing.
Been there, done that.
Have a great weekend back after the game on Sunday.
