Starting point is 00:00:00 You don't want it, you don't need it, but you're going to get it anyway. The Kevin Sheehan Show, here's Kevin. Window Nation is the presenting sponsor of this show, 86690 Nation, windonation.com if you need new windows. I am here the day after. The day after an alarmingly awful loss against the Minnesota Vikings, 31-0 in Minneapolis. and I'm going to kick off the show with a reversal of something that I said on the postgame pod last night.
Starting point is 00:00:36 Yale is going to help me. My guy Yale wrote Kevin, at least Quinn didn't leave him in there this time. He learned from his mistake in the Seattle game, you protect the franchise. Thank you for that, Yale. So my reversal on something that I said last night is that Jaden should have come back into the game and played. Knowing now, okay, that Jaden wasn't injured, wasn't even really banged up, he was just, as Dan Quinn said earlier today, he was just sore after landing on his non-throwing elbow after the interception he threw to Andrew Van Ginkle. I think he should have come back into the game and played.
Starting point is 00:01:20 I understand the head coach proceeding with caution, I do. He blew it against Seattle, admitted. that he blew it in the Seattle game when he had Jaden in there down 38 to 7 with nine minutes to go, dropping him back and then running an RPO on the final play of that drive in which he got hurt. But he wasn't hurt yesterday. The risk was more soreness. At 17-0 with 7 minutes to go in the third quarter, I think it would have been better had he gone back into the game.
Starting point is 00:01:53 That's my reversal from last night, and I can feel the steam, I can feel the heat, I can feel the anger coming from some of you. I did agree with Quinn last night, and I did hear Quinn say in the post game that he was cleared to return. He could have played, but he made the decision to not play him. I get Quinn airing on the side of overly cautionary, and I agreed with it last night. I've had a chance to think about it, and I feel differently today.
Starting point is 00:02:25 because yesterday was not analogous to the Seattle game in any way, shape, or form. 17-0 third quarter isn't 38 to 7 fourth quarter. Jaden's a competitor. That's why he chased down Van Ginkle in the first place and got blown up by the block that created some soreness on his non-throwing elbow. Put him back out there. That's my reversal from last night. I mean, he only played in four drives up until that point.
Starting point is 00:03:02 Four. It wasn't enough football for him and everybody else on offense. If it had happened with seven minutes to go in the game, of course, take him out. And by the way, I think Quinn, while certainly having the Seattle game in the back of his mind, I think the other part with Quinn, and I get this, is that, I mean, my whole team is an absolute disaster today. I can't get off the field on defense. It's 17-0, not 35 to nothing, but we're not going to be able to get any stops. And I would agree with that, but I just, as I thought about it, and then I listened to Quinn earlier today,
Starting point is 00:03:42 with another 22 to 23 minutes of clock left in that game, unless the blue tent guys came out and said, nope, or there's some risk. If it's soreness, absent of anything serious, he should have gone back into the game. And he definitely should play Sunday against the Giants. Quint today, by the way, was asked to grade Jaden's season. And, you know, he kind of, he didn't roll his eyes, but he said, look, because of the injuries and the personnel
Starting point is 00:04:15 that's been around him when he's played, it's kind of hard to evaluate or grade Jaden's season. season, which I totally agree with. I think it's hard to grade a lot of seasons here. He even implied that even yesterday was hard to evaluate because of what he said was a lack of, quote, banked reps, closed quote, with the guys that were out there yesterday. He was referring to the fact that, yeah, they had their starters out there, but they haven't played together since week one, and they actually didn't even have an off season together. And the reason I bring that up is because there was an opportunity for more banked reps. And they sat him. And there will
Starting point is 00:04:57 be an opportunity for a lot more in banked reps over the final four weeks of the season. Now, you might say, well, what's the use of banked reps with a bunch of guys that aren't going to be on the team? Debo's not going to be on the team. I don't know if that's true. Noah Brown's not going to be on the team. Ertz probably not going to be on the team. Torn ACL. That's a really tough, tough break for him. What a career. I don't know if it's over, but tough, tough loss. I know that the locker room was exceptionally somber last night, in part because of the ass kicking they took,
Starting point is 00:05:31 the other part because of the Ert's injury. But I still think Jaden needs the banked reps. I do. And the reason for that is I think there's another issue here with Jaden right now. I said that Jaden had a C-level. game on the podcast. I'm going to update that here shortly because there was a play that I wasn't sure about, but now I think I'm sure about. So more on that coming up. But I think there's an issue right now with him having lost a little bit of confidence. You know, you don't think that
Starting point is 00:06:13 about him with the way he played last year. He was basically Superman confidence-wise. But I think he's, you know, playing with a little less confidence. I think he's playing a little tight at times. It's understandable, given how little he's played. And when he's played, you know, what's been around him and things haven't gone all that well. So I think he needs these reps. I think he needs to bank more reps for himself. I think he needs a confidence boost here at the end of the season, waiting another nine to 10 months to address maybe a slight loss in confidence. that doesn't sound like the best use of time from my standpoint. Now, we can talk about the season finale when we get there,
Starting point is 00:06:57 but the next three games, if he's just sore and he's not injured and there's no risk, he should play. This from Francis. Francis writes, Kevin, you were too hard on Jaden Daniels. When I read these things, I'm always surprised because I thought my overall, Jaden take and my game take was going to be thought of as not harsh enough.
Starting point is 00:07:26 I thought it was very fair. I went through almost every single play and I do have an update to his grade and Francis said you were too hard on Jaden. Pro football focus graded him average and your guy Nick Ackridge said he
Starting point is 00:07:42 was fine. Maybe rethink the grade you gave him. Francis, I gave him a C on the podcast last night on the post game. That's exactly average. So it looks like I agreed with pro football focus. And I like Nick Ackridge a lot. I didn't see what Nick said or where he said it. And I didn't even see the actual PFF score. I would have guessed that anybody, you know, being super objective and analytical looking at every single play wouldn't have graded him as an F.
Starting point is 00:08:19 or even a D, I mean, there were a lot of good plays, and there were some bad plays, too. This from Kenny in Gaithersburg. Kevin, the worst defense ever, not according to DVOA, the guy you had on the show said Cincinnati's defense was the worst ever, according to DVOA. Yes, Aaron Schatz, the creator of the DVOA metric. I've had him on the podcast. I had him on radio a week and a half ago, something like that. And he did say that the Bengals defense was the worst ever measured in the DVOA era. But Kenny, I knew that. I didn't say Washington's defense was the worst ever in NFL history.
Starting point is 00:09:06 I said that I think this defense is the worst Washington has ever had, that I can remember. I mean, we've had some bad defenses, you know, over the last. last 15 or so years. Really bad defenses. Very few good defenses. 2005, 2007 come to mind as good defenses. 2020 was pretty good defensively. But I will say this. You know, yeah, I mean, I can't personally remember a defense being worse than this one. Yesterday's performance, though, on defense was really an all-timer. I don't want to be super reactionary, you know, even 24 hours later, but it was super alarming. It's one thing to get embarrassed by Detroit and Seattle.
Starting point is 00:10:01 It's another thing entirely to perform the way they did defensively against a Minnesota offense that was terrible coming into the game. I mean, really got awful. J.J. McCarthy had the worst numbers for a first round. pick over his first six or seven games in the history of the league. We talked about how bad the Viking offense was last week on Friday's show in particular, the same show in which I said, do not throw a screen or a flat pass in the direction of Van Ginkle.
Starting point is 00:10:35 And then Gruden, Jay came on and one of the first things he said, no where 43 is, do not throw a screen pass in his direction. I said over and over again last week, you know, the Viking offensive. is horrendous. Their defense is excellent. Their offense horrendous. So considering that the skins had played improved defense, not great defense, but improved defense against Miami and Denver, again, like, you know, I tried not to overdo it like some did against Miami and Denver. I think it was different. Steve Souter, who will come on this Wednesday, loved the way Quinn disguised a lot of the zone coverages and the fact that they were playing exclusively or almost exclusively
Starting point is 00:11:18 zone defense. But still, Miami got into the red zone five times in Denver in overtime, went through Washington's defense like it was a sieve. But against Minnesota's offense, there was an opportunity to keep the improvement going against that terrible Vikings offense. But they got beat every way imaginable on defense. J.J. McCarthy, had the best day of his career by Miles. They ran the ball where and when they wanted. They threw it all over the field. The worst third down offense in the league, or 31st, what was it worst or 31st?
Starting point is 00:11:57 31st ranked third down offense in the league didn't miss in the first half, five for five. And then they didn't miss in the red zone for the game, four for four. You know, I've said this repeatedly, and you won't get me off this. that injuries are the number one reason. I think it's obvious. I think anybody that's watched this league for more than 10 minutes knows that the reason they are 3 and 10 injuries more than anything else. You're not going to get me off that because you want to flex and say it's a lot more than that.
Starting point is 00:12:33 There's a lot going on here. But in terms of being 3 and 10 and getting blown out the way they've been blown out, it's number one injuries. count a few spaces until you get to the next reason, all right? I'm not saying they'd be 10 and 3 had they been healthy, but this disaster of a season would look different right now if they had been healthy. However, injuries aren't an explanation for everything, especially yesterday against that team.
Starting point is 00:13:01 They weren't playing Kansas City, Seattle, Detroit, Denver. They were playing one of the worst offensive teams in the NFL. I've taken them off the hook for a lot of. lot of what's happened this season because they haven't been playing with their best players for much of the season. But yesterday, their best players were back on offense and the defense put on a shockingly awful display of football against arguably the worst offensive team in the league playing, by the way, the worst offense of any team in the league coming in. I'm not taking the offense off the hook. They didn't have many chances in the game. That's for sure.
Starting point is 00:13:41 And they did move the football here and there, but they did not score a point. Not one point. Shut out. Shut out for the first time in six years. They were shut out by the 49ers, 9 to nothing in a downpour at FedEx back in 2019. This team has been blown out too much, too much in a league designed for even the worst teams to keep it close. our team has lost five games by 21 or more this year. It's actually hard to be that non-competitive the way the league is designed.
Starting point is 00:14:19 Now, I don't think all five have been the same. I think the Dallas and Kansas City losses by 21 or more. I don't think we're about effort. I don't. The Seattle and Detroit losses were awful to watch, no doubt, and they were absolutely, you know, games that were over by how. halftime, or even earlier than that. But those two teams were so much better than Washington in those moments. I mean, Washington was really at the height of lost players at that point.
Starting point is 00:14:50 Ben Standing, by the way, told me this morning on radio that the team released wide receiver Chris Moore over the weekend. I guess I missed that news. Chris Moore leads all receivers on this team in snaps. I mean, that tells you what they've gone through. They cut him on Saturday. Their team leader in snap counts at wide receiver this year. But I think the Kansas City and Detroit stretch, that was really a point in which they reached a crescendo of brutal schedule and just not having enough players that were at the
Starting point is 00:15:29 professional level on the field. but 31 to nothing to that team yesterday goes deeper. I got this from Randall. Randall writes, Kevin, were you being serious? You really want to fire everybody? So yesterday, I forget if I mentioned this on the postgame pod last night, but yesterday after the game, I tweeted out just slightly less embarrassing than the Detroit loss, but more embarrassing than the Seattle and Dallas.
Starting point is 00:16:00 losses, but close. Horrendous season, fire everybody. I think most of you who listen to me and know me to a certain degree in this environment, you know, probably knew that I was kidding, that it was tongue placed firmly in cheek, but so many of you, like Randall, thought I was being serious. And that's the problem with social media. And that's my fault for not. I guess I did follow up pretty quickly to say in the next tweet more seriously. But I actually heard from somebody kind of close to some of the people in the organization. And they're like, man, that doesn't even sound like you. You must really be. And I said, no, no, no, no, no. I was kidding. I don't want anybody fired. You know, I've discussed this many times. Last year bought Peterson Quinn
Starting point is 00:16:56 multiple years in my book. I think Dan Quinn's a good coach. I am still, you know, in the Adam Peters believer class. Now, I didn't know much about Adam Peters before he got here and I've watched him work here, but it's still too early on Peters and on his drafts, in my opinion. I know that Quinn's a good coach. Is he, you know, an elite level coach? Nobody would ever say that. But after last year, you know, that bought them, that bought them some time. I mean, they're not getting fired people. I hope you understand that. I guess another four lopsided, non-competitive losses might create some, you know, warm seats for a few people.
Starting point is 00:17:42 But I don't think. I mean, you know, Peters isn't going anywhere. Quinn's not going anywhere. Can you imagine, honestly, if ownership came in after this season and cleaned house? Some of you would cheer it. I understand that. But you're the same people that said after last year, I mean, let Adam cook. My God, Quinn, what a hire.
Starting point is 00:18:08 Kingsbury, what an absolute coup to get him. I think the one person that we questioned all year and then certainly in the offseason was Joe Whit Jr. and they've made a change there. But if Josh Harrison company, you know, if they were that impulsive, it would reek of Snyder and just think about how it would be viewed. This was a team going into this year that agents in that Ben Standing survey said, this culture, this team, this is the new place, man. It's completely different.
Starting point is 00:18:42 You know, we've even heard this year during all these losses, a guy like Von Miller say, I love it here. The culture is phenomenal. Zach Ertz, Bobby Wagner, all these people, you know, came back because they really like it. It's, I think, an aberration year. I think it's, you know, very much a season in which, you know, you can't play and win when you don't have most of your best players playing all the time. And I would expect management and ownership to recognize why they're 3 and 10 more than anything else. and also, you know, give a little bit of clearance based on last year and the overachieving, you know, this NFL man, it is, I mean, just last week, you know, just last week. It was like I said, man, they certainly haven't quit on Quinn. You know, this is a culture, a reflection. You know, many of you are like, you're right, I was wrong about Cliff. Man, what an offensive game plan he put together.
Starting point is 00:19:47 a week later in the NFL things change cliff didn't call a good game fire him Quinn I mean blown out by that team you got to fire him Peters didn't have any players this year and didn't have any depth fire him um yeah I'm not into firing anybody right now and if I were I'd say it I've certainly said it in the past you know I've called for you know and I hate doing that, but I've done it before where I've said, totally justifiable that Bruce Allen not be the general manager, that Vinnie Serato not be the general manager, that Jim Zorn not be the head coach, that, you know, this is a disaster with Ron Rivera, you know, wearing both hats. He has lost all of his interest in being a part of anything, time to move on. I mean, some of these
Starting point is 00:20:36 were obvious and easy. The point is, is that if I felt this way about Peters or Quinn, I would say it. You know, the Kingsbury, we're going to get a defensive coordinator. And I think number one priority offseason is defense, defense, defense. You need five new starters. You need a new defensive coordinator. Quinn cannot be the defensive coordinator next year. After yesterday, he cannot be the defensive coordinator. He can't handle Shanahan-style offenses. They need, Quinn needs to be the CEO coach. He is very good as a motivator. He's a great culture guy. I, I think, you know, some of the in-game decisions more often than not are the right decisions. But he needs a strong defensive coordinator, even if it isn't his system.
Starting point is 00:21:23 You know, I think about it, Jim Schwartz, if he becomes available, or somebody from, you know, Mike McDonald's staff in Seattle. I don't, you know, we've talked about some of the guys that are out there, you know, or Rahim Morris, probably not going to make it in Atlanta. You got to bring in a real, real good defensive coordinator because you're not. Offensively this year, you're not getting the most out of the least, not even close. You're getting the least out of the least and probably even less than what you have on the field. Offensively, there have been moments this year where they've gotten a little bit more out of what they've had on the field. I'm not saying that yesterday was one of those days. Yesterday was not nearly as bad on offense as, you know, maybe you think.
Starting point is 00:22:10 It wasn't good, though. it wasn't good and I will talk more about that and update update my Jaden Daniels grade which was a C on last night's show but I'll tell you why I've adjusted that grade when we come back after these words from a few of our sponsors hey guys how many times do you get your credit card statement and you go through it and you see a monthly subscription fee for something you don't even use anymore Well, I've got something that I think can help you. That was the big body that came in from McLaurin. Brandon Coleman, the second year man out of TCU. That was Fox play-by-play man, Adam Amin, calling that second in goal tackle-eligible incompletion to Brandon Coleman. I said about that play last night.
Starting point is 00:27:25 I wasn't sure if Jaden should have thrown it or not or could see to throw it or not. I'm going to update that analysis first blush last night here in a moment. This segment of the show brought to you by Window Nation 86690 Nation or Windonation.com for their year-end sale. You have until the end of the month for 50% off everything and zero percent financing interest for five years. No interest until the year 2030 if you choose to finance the purchase and half price on everything. It all starts with a free in-home, no-obligation estimate. Just call them at 86690 Nation or go to windownation.com, mention my name. They'll schedule that estimate. It's an hour or less. One of the great things about that estimate in that process is that
Starting point is 00:28:19 you actually find out which windows in your home are older and are costing you money and should be replaced. My recommendation is window nation and all I ask is if you've been thinking about new windows. Just give them a chance to come out and give you a free in-home estimate. So that particular play I'm going to get to here in a moment. But first, I want you to hear Drew Breeze. And the way he described what he thought Washington should do on the second and goal play, which was the first of three consecutive throws after Chris Rodriguez had run five times. for 39 yards on that drive and had rushed two yards to the two-yard line on first and goal at the four. Listen to Drew Breeze and what he thinks Washington should do on second and goal
Starting point is 00:29:15 from the two. This is where you just lean on the veteran O line, the strength of this old line of just being able to pound this ball. You know, Minnesota's struggled at times here with just the teams that just want to try to run it down their throat. You know, they thrive on being able to pressure you, get to negative plays in the passing game, but this is where they've got to be really stout. Drew Breeze, with some pretty good advice for Cliff Kingsbury, run it down their throat with your big offensive line against a team that is much better defending the pass than they are stopping the run.
Starting point is 00:29:53 Cliff wasn't taking advice. He decided to throw it three times, none of which ended. in a touchdown. The fourth and goal throw was an excellent throw by Jaden, one of his better throws. I watched that on the All-22. Led Debo perfectly anticipation throw. Debo's got to catch that. Somebody on radio said, Terry would have caught that, and I agree with that person.
Starting point is 00:30:16 Terry would have caught that ball. But, you know, by the way, and I'm going to get to the second in goal play, the attempted throw on the tackle eligible to Brandon Coleman in a moment. But, you know, when you go for fourth and goal at the two, especially against a team like Minnesota, you do it with the understanding that, hey, even if we miss, that offense, which is terrible, is going to take the field from their own two-yard line, and that quarterback is either going to, A, hold on to the ball too long and get sacked for a safety, B, he's going to throw us the ball, and we're going to get a pick-six or, you know, a pick and first and goal inside the 15-yard line. or worst case, they're going to punt and we're going to field it and we're going to have really good field position down 7-0 to try to tie the game on our second drive of the game. You don't have to give up a 19-play, 98-yard, 12-minute, one-second drive.
Starting point is 00:31:14 You don't have to do that, but they did. Yeah. Anyway, so look, not the expert on film breakdown here, but in looking at the All-22, I'd given you a few plays from Jaden's game on the post-game last night where I wasn't sure if Jaden messed up the play or he didn't mess up the play. And one of the plays I mentioned initially was the second and goal from the two. The second and goal from the two, you know,
Starting point is 00:31:46 Brandon Coleman was open briefly. And I looked at the All-22 and, you know, they're in that jumbo with Brandon Coleman is the tackle eligible. Jaden's under center and they go play action and Jaden has a chance and it's clear on the All-22. Now he'd have to throw it without Brandon Coleman looking. He hasn't gotten out into that flat area where he's turning around waiting for the ball and it is a big tackle and maybe that's why Jaden waited.
Starting point is 00:32:15 He wanted Coleman to see it and he wanted to see that Coleman was ready for it. But if he throws quickly with anticipation and he lobs it out there by the time, Coleman turns around and looks at it, it should be landing right in his hands. I think that's the way the play was designed. I would have rather them run the ball with Rodriguez on second a goal from the two. I would have rather
Starting point is 00:32:37 taken Drew Breeze's advice, but the play worked. Now, what happened is that Jaden didn't throw it right away. And when he didn't throw it right away, Eric Wilson, the outside linebacker,
Starting point is 00:32:52 has an opportunity to get in Jaden. Jason's face and really impact his vision. And that's when Jaden said, to hell with it. I'm going to throw it out of bounds and we'll come back third and goal from the two. But I think, you know, yesterday I said I'm not sure about that play. I'm sure about it now. And I'm also sure I think about two other plays.
Starting point is 00:33:17 But that one, I think, you know, again, it's a tackle. There may be some hesitation from the quarterback. He did throw it to Trent Scott. member for the touchdown against the Bengals last year in week three on Monday night football. You know, maybe you shouldn't have that play in there unless you really need it at the very end. Like, we can take a simpler path to the end zone rather than having our big tackle go out there as a pass receiver.
Starting point is 00:33:43 But I think Jaden needed to throw the football. So I'm really interested to hear what Souter says on Wednesday about this play and a couple of others. But I knocked Jaden down to a C-minus. from a C, because that should have been seven to seven, or certainly a chance with a good throw if Coleman can catch and, you know, identify where the ball is in the air when he turns around. So that play, and then let me just mention the 12 men on the field play, I don't think after watching the All-22, and I said this last night, I don't think Jaden saw the player running off
Starting point is 00:34:19 the field. I don't think he was taking advantage of, you know, the opportunity to run a free play because he knew it would get flagged. Last night, that was in my, you know, on my list of plays that I wasn't sure about. I don't think he saw it. And look, the problem with the result of the play is on him to a certain degree because he gets careless with the football and loses it and fumbles it. But the pressure, like with a lot of plays, immediate, immediate in his face. It's too bad because I think it's Terry is wide open, but he has no chance.
Starting point is 00:34:55 Now, fortunately, 12 men on the field, and they get a chance to run another play, and get a first down off of it. But it was a terrible job by him protecting the football on that particular play. Also, I'm convinced, if I haven't said this already, I'm convinced that he checked to the Van Ginkle screen. The more you see it from the moment he leaves the huddle, he had a lot of responsibility. at the line of scrimmage. Maybe he didn't. I don't know. The way it looked to me, he did. And I just think that's a horrific decision and a bad play. And by the way, at 14 to nothing, and you're driving down the field on the opening drive to make it 14 to 7. You know, fourth and goal, a fourth and three there, you got to go for it. I mean, you're three and nine.
Starting point is 00:35:44 I mean, on some level against that past defense, I think maybe they should have considered field goal, but I had no problem with the fourth and three decision. and two at the goal line decision. I didn't have issues with those. Yeah, C minus for Jaden, C minus. A couple of other things real quickly to update. Number one is this. We talked about the three turnovers that Washington committed. I didn't mention, which I should have, because we talked about this on Friday. Minnesota, which has the most turnovers in the league, worst turnover margin, but they've turned it over 26 times this year, and Washington couldn't get one against the team that leads the league and giveaways, not one. That's eight games this year without a
Starting point is 00:36:36 turnover. That's really ridiculous. I mean, Washington right now, in overall takeaways, they are tied for next to last in the league. They have seven takeaways in 13 games. The Jets only have two. The Giants only have seven. So, you know, Washington's overall turnover margin for the season is minus 11. That's third to last in the league. Minnesota and the Jets are below them. So, you know, no takeaways against a team that, you know, hands them out is, you know, is pretty awful. Oh, one other thing about yesterday's game, I had mentioned on the list of things that I liked from the game, that the game went quickly. And I said, I think it might have been the fastest NFL game of the season. Well, in fact, it was two hours, 39 minutes, the fastest game this year in the
Starting point is 00:37:35 NFL. So it was painful, but at least it was over quickly. All right, let's take a break when we come back a little bit about yesterday's NFL day and maybe a tiny bit on the college football playoff rankings, although I'll save some of that for tomorrow's show with Tommy and even a little bit later on in the week when we get a college football guest on. I'm trying to make that happen on either Wednesday or Friday show. We'll finish up with that after these words from a few of our sponsors. Starting point is 00:42:20 So count the three. That makes it a seven point difference. 24-17, the final. So that was Raiders kicker, Daniel Carlson, booting a 46-yard field goal on the game's final play to cut a 24-14 deficit against the Broncos to a 24-14 deficit against the Broncos to a 24 to 17 final. This will go down as one of the all-time bad beats
Starting point is 00:42:50 if you were on either the under or the Denver Broncos. But in the case of your boy right here, I was on the over and on the Raiders. I'll explain why it was one of the all-time wildest gambling wins I can ever remember in the NFL. This segment of the show is brought to you by My Bookie. And you get everything at your disposal like I had yesterday in the Broncos Raiders game. Again, use my promo code, DC Reload. So the smell test five and two on the weekend, two and one on the college games. I had Duke and I had Indiana. I also had Alabama. That was not close. But two and one on Saturday, and then three and one yesterday. I had the Falcons early. It was six to six at half time, and then they ended up losing big time. They were a major anti-public side, and the line actually came down. Some of you let me know that, not that I didn't know it already, but there
Starting point is 00:44:53 were a couple of you that tweeted out, and I didn't see it until after the game had kicked. Should I still play Atlanta plus the six? Because it went from seven down to six, I guess, and spots. I had it at seven. Six is a bad number, no doubt, but it didn't matter yesterday. None of the numbers on that game were correct. The Seahawks won 37 to 9. But then the other plays I had were the Packers' length six and a half. What a great football game that was. What a great football game that was. Intense, cold, Lambo. I'll tell you what, man, I'm becoming more and more impressed with Caleb Williams. I still think he's not very good as a dropback passer, but in the boot game and in the play action, and certainly with his athleticism,
Starting point is 00:45:39 the plays he makes with his legs, both throwing the football, running the football. He's an exciting player to watch. They can really run the football, though, man. They really can with Swift and Manangai. They're good. The bears are better than I thought, but the Packers, I really think along with the Rams. Packers, Rams, Seattle in the NFC. Those are the teams. But back to the Raiders game for a moment. So I gave out the Raiders plus seven and a half, and I gave out the over as a smell test pick, 40. So they're down 24 to 7, the Raiders are, with about three minutes to go. My chances of winning the over or winning the Raiders bet, slim to none. I mean, you know, probability percent, probably less than one percent, maybe a little bit higher on the over,
Starting point is 00:46:29 but in terms of the Raiders scoring, you know, twice in the final three minutes, you know, less than one percent. I mean, they were terrible offensively. Kenny Pickett was in the game for Gino Smith, but Pickett throws a touchdown pass with just over two minutes to go, and now it's 24 to 14. And, you know, I'm like, okay, well, they're going to try an onside kick. If they get it, I've got a shot. Well, they did try the onside kick. They didn't get. it, but they still had timeouts. And Pete Carroll's using the timeouts down 10. And Denver on a fourth and four at the Raiders 28-yard line, I'm like, go ahead, Sean, send in your kicker, Sean Peyton. Let's get this thing over. Because the field goal at 2414 would make the total of the game,
Starting point is 00:47:14 2714, 41 points over. I'd win one of the two bets. But he goes for it on fourth and four. If they get it, it's over. Final score 24-14, I lose both ways, right? But he didn't get it. They got stopped. The Raiders stopped them. And so with 58 seconds to go and no timeouts, the Raiders have the ball at their own 28-yard line. And I'm like, man, if they can throw something down the field and get a chunk play, maybe they'll send their field goal kicker out there to make it 24 to 17. And eventually that happened, but the way it happened was insane. So they're not making much progress. The clock's running, and then with 16 seconds to go, Kenny Pickett throws a 26-yard pass to Tyler Lockett to the Denver 33-yard line, but the clock's running. It's going to run out. The game's going to end 24-14 because he wasn't anywhere near out of bounds. However, a Denver player, a defensive back, lies down on Lockett to make sure that he's, you know, know, has trouble getting up, and he's slow to get up to slow that process down. And the referees flag the Denver defensive back for delay of game, stopping the clock with four seconds to go and adding another five yards to the play. But still, it's, you know, at the Denver, you know, 28-yard line. Now they're just going to, what are they, is he going to actually send out his field goal team,
Starting point is 00:48:49 you know, and kick a field goal on the last play of that. the game? I mean, there are so many people that think the ending of this game was fixed from the referee throwing the flag to Pete Carroll deciding instead of throwing one into the end zone down 2414 on the final play of the game, which is what I think a lot of teams would do. He sends Daniel Carlson out. Like he knew what the point spread was. He may have known what the total was. Both were at stake. And Carlson's trotting out onto the field, I'm like, oh my God. He's going to kick the field goal on the final play of the game. I mean, it would be one thing, right, if there were like 15 seconds left, or even like nine seconds or 10 seconds where, you know,
Starting point is 00:49:31 you kick the field goal and then you get a chance at an onside kick with six seconds to go. And if you get it, maybe you get one Hail Mary. But this is going to be the final play of the game. They have no chance of winning the game. It's over. And Carlson comes out and he boots the field goal as time expires to send the game over the total at 24. 17, 41 total points, and the Raiders going from down 10 to down seven, the number was seven and a half that I gave out on Friday. The number actually went to eight in a lot of spots, and I'm telling you, I've never had a year like this with the smell test.
Starting point is 00:50:08 It's won most years, you know, but the games that have gone, you know, my way in these situations, that's an all-timer. That's one as a gambler, especially if you were on Denver or the under, you'll never forget. It was super suspicious the way the whole thing transpired. But of course, I loved it. It was incredible. The other games yesterday, you know, that one o'clock window was stacked. How about that Bill's Bengals game in the snow?
Starting point is 00:50:42 I mean, Joe Burrow was sensational. So was Josh Allen. But Joe Burrow made a critical mistake on the pick six. and then got a little bit unlucky with the other thing. But in that driving snowstorm, Josh Allen, 22 of 28 for 251, three touchdowns, no interceptions, and also rushed for 78 yards and a touchdown. Man, is he having a close to this season? Buffalo's defense is not very good.
Starting point is 00:51:10 It's not great, but I still, you know, if they get in and they're going to get in now, nine and four, they play the Patriots this coming week in Foxborough. That would keep Buffalo's chances alive for the division title. Could it be the second of three meetings between the Bills and the Patriots? We will see. But that was an incredible game. The Pittsburgh Baltimore game, I'm sure you've seen the likely touchdown that wasn't. Man, I'll tell you, everybody says in real time it looks like a touchdown.
Starting point is 00:51:43 I thought in real time it didn't look like a touchdown. And then on replay, I thought he caught it, one, two, and I thought that was it, but he had to complete the third step in the end zone? I don't know, man. I'll tell you this, though, Pittsburgh had a big-time performance when you consider everything that was being discussed about Mike Tomlin. I mean, and by the way, in that game, no running game, Aaron Rogers played great. 23 of 34, 284 a touchdown, no picks, no sacks in the game. and Pittsburgh. I've been saying this all season long
Starting point is 00:52:19 that I think Baltimore is not good. And I think Pittsburgh, even in the face of some of their losses, I'm like, I still think they got a shot to win the division. They're now a game up with four to go. They finish with the Ravens final game of the season in Pittsburgh. The Jacksonville Indy game, I'm sure you know by now, Daniel Jones, done for the year, Achilles injury.
Starting point is 00:52:44 These Colts, it was so promising all season long, but now it looks like any sort of hope will be diminished with the loss of Daniel Jones. Jacksonville ran them, 36 to 19. The backup quarterback, by the way, is the kid from Notre Dame who played the national championship game, Riley Leonard, who has a lot of ties to this area, because I've heard from people who listen to. to the show who are related to Riley Leonard. So, yeah, I mean, the cults, after their start, they got to be done with no Daniel Jones, right? In Jacksonville, sitting atop that division at 9 and 4, but with Houston breathing down their next at 8 and 5.
Starting point is 00:53:34 I said this now a month ago, that I think it was after they beat Buffalo, I said, I think Houston can win the Super Bowl. and I wagered on them 30 to 1 to win the AFC Championship. I have a rather nice-sized wager on them to win the AFC championship game at 30 to 1. They've won five straight games. They are right now the best defensive team in the league, in my opinion. I think Denver is good, really good, excellent. But I think Houston right now is the best.
Starting point is 00:54:05 By the way, you want to see what injuries can do to a great team or a great quarterback. Look at Kansas City's injuries along that offensive. line. They can't move the football. They're having a difficult time. Now, they're not losing by three touchdowns every game. That's true. But they've lost so many offensive linemen here recently. And they've now lost four to their last five and they are six and seven and in a hole. They finish with Chargers, Titans, Broncos, and Raiders. They have been eliminated from the AFC West. Could they still go 10 and seven and make a wild card? They can. But will they win out with the way they're playing. I think Houston is so dangerous right now in the AFC.
Starting point is 00:54:46 What other games from yesterday's early window? I think that's kind of it. I think we touched on them. Yeah, I mean, the Rams bounced back, 4517. Jay Gruden out, nine of his last 10, lock of the weeks on this show. He gave out the Rams on Friday. He is on fire. Good NFL Sunday. Saints beat the Bucks. I mean, the Bucks are really reeling, and a lot of that is injury-related with them. You know, they do have Bucky Irving back, but still know Mike Evans. They've had some injuries on defense, and the Buccaneers have lost now four of their last five games. They play the Thursday night game, and they are tied with the Panthers. And listen to this. The Bucks and the Panthers play twice over. the final three weeks of the season. If you're looking for the week 18, the final week of the season, that Sunday night game
Starting point is 00:55:47 that they'll end up having to conclude the regular season, how about right now the call being Carolina and Tampa Bay? That game's in Tampa for the NFC South title. What are the other possibilities I'm looking at them right now? Detroit, Chicago could be it. Chargers, Denver could be it. There's some interesting week 18 matchups. But yeah, Baltimore, Pittsburgh, of course.
Starting point is 00:56:18 Yeah, there are a lot of possibilities. Seattle, San Francisco, a lot of possibilities. But Carolina and Tampa, they meet twice over the final three weeks of the season. No smell test pick, by the way, tonight. Real quickly on the playoff. So I don't have a problem with any of it. I was expecting, I think, Notre Dame to grab that last spot. I think of the three teams for that tough break for Virginia, man.
Starting point is 00:56:45 They got that game to overtime, and they lost to Duke and the ACC champ wasn't going to go. That put James Madison in. Congrats to all of you, James Madison fans. That's awesome. Personally, I don't think we're going to see what we saw this year ever again. two non-power four schools, Tulane and Madison, because starting next year, the ACC champ is guaranteed a spot regardless of record, and Notre Dame is guaranteed a spot
Starting point is 00:57:14 if they finish in the top 12. Those are the rules for next year's playoff. But as far as the way it unfolded, I really think of the three teams, Bama, Notre Dame, and Miami. I think Notre Dame and Miami right now were the two best teams, but that's not how they determine it. went to Georgia and won during the regular season. They've got a better overall profile, even though they're not playing great football right now. And they got blasted by Georgia. But look,
Starting point is 00:57:43 Notre Dame and Miami, I put more of the blame for the feelings that people have about this on the committee for the way they sort of displayed and distributed the information during these pairing shows or ranking shows during the last month or so. But Miami and Notre Dame Dame's resumes were almost identical and they played head to head. I know when the game was. It was Labor Day weekend, but Miami won the game. And if not head to head, I don't know how you would determine the team that gets in versus the team that doesn't. I actually think Notre Dame's the better team now. I think Notre Dame could have won the national championship. But I don't have a problem with the way it ended up being. And I feel like Notre Dame is the better
Starting point is 00:58:32 Dame not accepting a bowl bid is petty and small. And I think really sour grapes. I mean, they've got players who are seniors that are never going to play another football game. They're turning down a ton of revenue. They're turning down an opportunity to practice. I remember Ralph Regen telling me years ago, the best thing about making a bowl game is your young players get another month to practice. I thought, you know, the AD for Notre Dame said this is permanent damage to the relationship between Notre Dame and college football. I'm like, dude, you lost to Miami.
Starting point is 00:59:16 It was between the two of you for one spot. You lost the head to head. I don't get it. I mean, I think Notre Dame was the better team. I do. But when you're determining this, it was determined on the field. They played each other. Should be great. I'll tell you one thing right now. December 19th, there's a playoff game, Alabama, and Oklahoma, and then on Saturday, December 20th, last year, same thing. But this will be one of the great days in sports. You have a triple header of playoff games on December 20th. Miami, Texas, A&M at noon, Tulane, Ole Miss at 3.30, James Madison at Oregon. 7.30. I know Madison and Tulane aren't sexy, and Ole Miss and Oregon are massive favorites.
Starting point is 01:00:01 On the same day, you have Washington, Philadelphia, not going to be what we had hoped it would be, and then Green Bay, Chicago from Soldier Field at night. Hell of a holiday, pre-holiday weekend of football on that Saturday, December 20th. All right, back tomorrow with Tommy.
