Starting point is 00:00:00 You don't want it, you don't need it, but you're going to get it anyway. The Kevin Sheehan Show, here's Kevin. Tommy's here, I'm here, the show's presenting sponsors, always Window Nation, 86690Nation for Window Nation. Tommy, this from Jim. Jim writes Kevin with the commander's reversal, his name change back on the table. Question mark. I don't think it is. I would hope that everything's on the table all the time
Starting point is 00:00:34 until the business is truly healthy enough for them to think about you know something other than the business I'm talking about for the business people in the organization like the new team president in the organization who you've had a chance to meet and you liked right yes very personable guy seemed very smart and you know let's face it under his leader there's not a daily calendar of screw-ups.
Starting point is 00:01:04 Not yet, anyway. He had, yeah, I mean, fortunately, he didn't have to go through some of the things that the previous president went through, and the previous president was not really equipped from an experience standpoint to go through many of those things. Hence, he turned into the chief blunder officer. He had never brought a company before, yeah. Right. This guy has.
Starting point is 00:01:28 Yeah, Mark Klaus. run Campbell's soup, I think. Yeah, it was, it was Campbell's, it was there was another big brand that he was involved in. Was it Pepperidge Farm? I think there there are a couple of big brands that he's been involved
Starting point is 00:01:43 in, but anyway, yeah, I don't think the name change. If you're talking about going back to the old name, I don't think that's going to ever be on the table. I'm sorry. I hope I'm wrong. I hope I'm dead wrong.
Starting point is 00:01:59 I just don't. think that's ever going to be back on the table. I don't think the league's top partners, top corporate partners will ever allow it. You know, the Amazons, the Bank of Americas, the Cokes, the networks, Disney, everybody, I don't think they're going to allow it. Could they change the name to something else? Yeah, I mean, it's possible. It would have been better to be three and eight last year than it is to be three and eight this year. It would have been much better to be three and eight. In hindsight, three and eight headed to whatever this is headed to.
Starting point is 00:02:35 I think it would have precipitated a change. We'd be in the midst of it. And then last year's season happening this year would be great. Because, of course, we'd be in the moment right now. On the other hand, I'm not sure you get the stadium deal done with this year being last year. Do you really think that's true? Well, if we thought that Jaden Daniels was the, a big part of the momentum for the stadium, that momentum would have been gone.
Starting point is 00:03:05 Yeah, maybe. I don't know. I had a feeling once Snyder was gone, it was always going to happen. I don't think that name changes back on the table after this terrible season, which is what we're headed towards. But I hope I'm dead wrong, Jim. I hope I am. This from John. John writes, Washington has missed 168 field goals out of their last 795 attempts. That's the most in the NFL since 2000. That averages out to a 21% misrate. Wow. I mean, I'm going to trust the math here.
Starting point is 00:03:50 Yes. You know, to hit at 79% of your field goals miss at 21% is not good. good. Although I'm sure a 79% rate in 2000 through maybe 2010 wasn't the worst. But yeah, the kickers that they have had. I think I ran through the list of quarterbacks they've had when people were, and people still do, call her yesterday suggested we trade Jaden Daniels to the Jets for three firsts and Justin Fields. That was a real call. That would be a good deal. Yeah. That would be a great deal. Um, he thought it was. Yes. Here are all those kickers, uh, that have accounted for all of those
Starting point is 00:04:32 Mrs. John over the last 25 years. Here's the list. Scott Bentley, Chris Hepner, Michael Hustead, Jose Cortez, James Tudhill, John Hall, Jeff Chandler, Ola Kimran, Nick Novak, Sean Suisam, Graham Ganoe, Billy Cundiff, oh, Cundiff. I remember Larry had a call of, oh, Cundiff, Kai Forbath, John Potter. I actually don't remember John Potter. He kicked in three games for us in 2013. Who knew? Dustin Hopkins, Nick Rose, Brian Johnson, Chris Blewett. I think Brian Johnson or Chris Blewitt. One of the two is the kid that kicked at Gonzaga here locally and then at Virginia Tech. Joey Sly, Cade, York, Greg Joseph, Zane Gonzalez, Austin Seibert, Matthew Wright, and Matt Gay. Quite the list of kickers
Starting point is 00:05:21 that have all accounted for. According to John, the most missed field goals since 2000. Now, I'd like to know how many of those missed field goals cost them games. I'm just going to guess that over the 25-year period, the 168 field goals, probably influenced in terms of the outcome five to six, maybe seven games. I would think more than that. Really? More than that.
Starting point is 00:05:54 Yeah. Yeah. I would think more than that. I mean, I can think of just recently, right? Austin Seibert missed that. Well, that wasn't a field goal. That was an extra point in the Dallas game last year. I can think of... Who was the best...
Starting point is 00:06:09 Dustin Hopkins was probably the best kicker of that punch. Yeah, the irony is actually Graham Ganoe was the best career, had the best career out of all of them. That's true. And this is where he started. his career, I believe. Because he's... Help the commanders win a game even when he wasn't on the roster.
Starting point is 00:06:34 How did he do that? Well, he got hurt. When they played the Giants, and they didn't have a kicker. Remember? You mean last year? Yeah, Graham Ganoe got hurt. Yeah, Graham Gano was the kicker on the Giants
Starting point is 00:06:49 in the opening game. Right. And the Giants lost because they didn't have somebody who could kick extra points. What does that have to do with Dustin Hopkins, though? Well, it doesn't have anything to do with Dustin Hopkins. You brought up Graham Ganoe.
Starting point is 00:07:02 Oh, you said Dustin Hopkins. Dustin Hopkins. But then you brought up Graham Ganoe. Right. I know. But you said Dustin Hopkins helped us win a game without even kicking in a game or whatever you said. You meant to say Graham Gano.
Starting point is 00:07:15 I meant to say Graham Gano. Yes, you meant to say Graham Gano. Graham Ganoe still in the league, still kicking with the Giants. And yes, that was a major blunder by Brian Dable because he had been hurt the day before or during the week. And he didn't have, you know, a kicker that could replace Graham Ganoe. That cost him a game. I'm just thinking, like, Nick Novak actually had a couple of game winners for them. Yes.
Starting point is 00:07:42 John Hall was a good kicker here for a while. I do remember the whole, you know, Scott Bentley, Chris Hepner, the 2000 season. It was one kicker after another. In fact, they're missing the old guy on this list. The guy that he kicked, missed the kick against the Giants. Oh, yeah, Eddie Murray. Eddie Murray was here also in 2000. He was on the roster.
Starting point is 00:08:14 Eddie Murray came here in 95 briefly and then came back in 2000. He's the guy that Norv sent in to kick a 48-yard field goal against the Giants, and he told Norv before he sent him out there, I don't have the distance from there. I can't kick it 48 yards in that direction. And Norv said, get out there anyway. And he was like two yards short on the kick. That was Norbs.
Starting point is 00:08:36 Meanwhile, up north, the franchise of unbelievable stability, The Baltimore Ravens have had four kickers in 20 years. That's amazing. Of course, one of them wasn't just kicking was like the least fun of his activities. He was much more interested in off-the-field activities. Kai Forbath was decent briefly when he was here. Dustin Hopkins was talented, no doubt. He was talented.
Starting point is 00:09:08 He also, in 2016, cost them two football games. He cost them the Detroit game on the road that they lost. He cost them the London game against the Bengals. And you could argue he cost them the Dallas Thanksgiving Day game. That was a terrible, you know, season for him in terms of clutch field goals. I'm looking through just to get in the Detroit game, he was 0 for two on field goals. They were both makeable and they lost a 20 to 17 game. The next week was Cincinnati when he shanked the field goal in overtime and they ended up in a tie.
Starting point is 00:09:49 And then in Dallas on Thanksgiving Day, he was two for four. He missed two field goals and a five-point loss. That absolutely could have made the difference in that game. Well, there you go. There's, I mean, you said. That's three for Hopkins. Yeah. Right.
Starting point is 00:10:07 So I think it's more than seven games over the course of this time. So are we saying that if they had a good kicker, Snyder might still be the owner? We wouldn't have had all of what we had, no. But amazing statistic, if true, we didn't check to see if it was true. We have your staff working on it, right? We've got them working on it. And then this from Paul A. Paul A writes, love the show.
Starting point is 00:10:37 I'm hoping you address a noxious line of thinking. during the next week. I am so sick of people suggesting that Jaden Daniels should be shut down, even if he's healthy. I'm glad that you haven't gone there. People say, but we can't let him get hurt. The season is over. You need to protect him. First off, I love the guy.
Starting point is 00:10:58 But if people are worried that Jaden Daniels is so fragile that he can't stay healthy behind a decent pass protecting offensive line, then the best thing to do is to play him and find that out now. Like all young quarterbacks, he needs reps to learn to play at NFL speed, which will help him stay healthy. And if he can't learn to protect himself, then it's very sad. But at least we find that out and move on in a couple of years. The alternative is to put them up on the shelf like a special little boy.
Starting point is 00:11:31 I don't even know what that means. But yeah, I mean, a lot of people are suggesting that. I'm not. I think that doesn't make any sense to me at all. It's all about when he's cleared to play. It's possible he could be cleared to play next weekend against Denver. I'm guessing that he'll be cleared to play against Minnesota the following week, which would leave five games left in the season.
Starting point is 00:11:55 And of course you have to play him. Of course you have to play him. I don't even... You pointed this out when we talked about this previously, and here's the logic. Here are the things that make sense of why you have to play. And first of all, he'll insist on playing. If he's healthy and you sit him for five games,
Starting point is 00:12:17 you risk fracturing your relationship with your young quarterback. Okay. The second thing is you mentioned you talked about how the other players in the locker room will look around and say, hey, we have to go out there and play. You know, I mean, we're not healthy and we're going out there to play. you know it will diminish his relationship with his teammates and his relationship with the team if they do that I think that's true I think that first of all I think that the organization will believe that we have to produce something this year if we have a chance to produce something we can't go
Starting point is 00:13:01 we can't take a full year off of not seeing our guys guys out there together, and that's essentially what it would be if you take the opener out of the equation. You'd be talking about the last time we basically saw the offense in full out there together. Now, there are changes, no Diami Brown, no Zakias, et cetera, was the championship game against Philadelphia or the giant game in the opener. They're not going to do that. They're not going to go a whole season without seeing if they have a chance to see. see their healthy team out there in what it looks like this year. He's got to get reps. He's a young player. Yes, he was brilliant last year. But that was last year. There was growth.
Starting point is 00:13:51 There was development. Remember, one of the things we talked about in the off season was that year two in the same system offensively with Cliff and even defensively, we were hoping, that it would make a bit of a difference. It really didn't. That You know, you just, based on being in the same system for two years, you would grow. So five games is not a game or two. Five games is, you know, approaching a third of the season. Like so I, it's just not. There's one fault with the e-mailer's logic.
Starting point is 00:14:28 And I'm not advocating sitting on the opposite. But citing the decent offensive line pass protection, that's not the issue. The issue is the lack of weapons that he would have available to him. The defense is knowing that and teeing off on him based on the fact that he has nobody to throw to or nobody to give the ball to. Yeah, and that's where, you know, I don't know what not everybody feels comfortable with this, but you've got to just be confident and you've got to hope that Cliff will come up with a game plan
Starting point is 00:15:05 and that makes sense based on the players that are on the field. And that he won't, let me emphasize this, because I don't want to see the, you know, hey, we've got five out there. Let's call a game which essentially allows him to make most of the plays to give us a chance to win the game. You're not going to be in games in which you have to win to maintain playoff position or to, you know, to get a better seed. Like, none of that's in play when he gets back anymore.
Starting point is 00:15:42 This is about, you know, playing football games, playing to win them, but you don't need to go that extra mile of, hey, man, this is life and death on this game. So we'll turn them loose. We'll turn them loose in the run game. We'll turn them loose as a scrambler. You know, he's going to, now it's hard to keep him, from competing to win every time he's out there.
Starting point is 00:16:05 But with the play calling, you can protect him a little bit. You can run the football more. You can run play action more off of being able to run the football. You can run more quick game. You can eliminate things like quarterback counter and quarterback power, you know, quarterback keepers from the playbook. I don't think you eliminate Zone Read. I think Zone Read more times than not is actually a safe play.
Starting point is 00:16:30 So, but you've got to rely on some, you know, a protective approach from the coaching. You can't leave them in a game and drop them back when you're down 38 to 14 against a relentless defense like you did against Seattle. I mean, those are the obvious ones. That's the obvious one. But, yeah, you've got to play them. And I'm actually really looking forward to the moment. moment if it happens, and there's no guarantee it'll happen. But I am looking forward to the moment in which Jaden's back out under the field healthy, Terry's out there with him. I'd like to
Starting point is 00:17:11 see Noah Brown out there with him. There's a possibility that can happen. Yes, Noah Brown. And by the way, he's a big target. He was one of Jaden's favorite targets last year. I hope Ertz is healthy. I hope Senate's back healthy. I hope Bates is playing better and healthy. I hope the backs are good. The offensive line doesn't sustain a serious injury here over the next week or two waiting for all these people to be back. I think, you know, it's important to get that feeling back that you had last year that, yeah, we're a pretty good offensive football team if we've got our guys out there. I can tell you this, though, there's this one thing that's gnawing at me, and that is just because I know I'll end up having to deal with it. And that is, if they get everybody back out
Starting point is 00:17:59 there and it doesn't go well. And then it's going to be all about, well, it wasn't about the injuries. He regressed. Cliff stinks. And here we go. Well, they're about to play the best defense in football or the second best. They have two games against what will be perhaps when they get there, the best defensive football team in the Philadelphia Eagles. They've got a game against an excellent defense in Minnesota on the road, and keep in mind, there's going to be a bit of a rust factor. They haven't played together this year. So while I think there's a chance we could see what we saw last year or a lot of it, I also think there's a chance at times it'll look a little rocky, especially in the first game or two back. You know, and people will react. People will
Starting point is 00:18:54 react to that. That's what I'm saying. Yeah. Yeah, they will. They'll react to that. They'll go in the panic mode, saying, oh, now that we see him, you know, he's taken such a step back. Maybe we need to trade him for three first round traffic in a New York jet.
Starting point is 00:19:14 And Justin Fields. That was a real call yesterday on the show. The question, Tommy, was over the last several weeks, is this season has devolved. What's the craziest most insane take you've heard? And I said, look, there are three obvious answers here. Adam Peters needs to get fired. Dan Quinn needs to get fired. You know, Jaden Daniels is not what we thought he was. And for me, it's all the Jaden Daniels talk. I mean, all of it is crazy to me. But the idea that people have suggested that Marcus Mariotta is a better
Starting point is 00:19:53 option than Jaden Daniels is hysterically off to suggest that last year was a complete nutter fluke and aberration and a one-year thing. I don't think it's unreasonable to discuss Jaden Daniels in terms of being concerned about his health and whether or not he can stay healthy. That's not unreasonable given how many times he's been hurt in the first, you know, 30 games of his career. I don't think it's unreasonable to say, that, hey, I think he's really good, but I actually think Drake May is going to be better, and I wish they had taken Drake May. I don't agree with that, but I don't think that's crazy.
Starting point is 00:20:36 The idea that you think he stinks or that last year was just a complete fluke, and everything you watched last year wasn't real, and that Marioita is just as good. The offense is better with Marioita in there. Those are the things that I think are insane. but yeah that's in the midst of that conversation somebody called and said look I mean I just don't think the jaden Daniels take is insane I'd trade him right now for three firsts and Justin Fields to the Jets and I and I told you last week a friend of mine texted me and he said I've given it a lot of thought
Starting point is 00:21:12 I think they should trade him now his reasoning was he doesn't think he's ever going to stay healthy he's going to have some sort of catastrophic injury and I said even if that's a possibility I'm going to keep them and hope it doesn't happen. But to each their own, lots of crazy takes when you go from 12 and 5, the NFC championship game, the most anticipation and the highest expectation level in decades to 3 and 8. And you're, in some cases, you're kind of new to the situation and you don't understand that, when you don't play with the guys that you intended to play with, it does impact seasons. And they haven't played with the guys they thought they were able to play with.
Starting point is 00:22:03 You know, after years of living in one of the poorest neighborhoods in town, somehow you moved to one of the richer neighborhoods last year, and then you got evicted. Now you're back in your old house. Or you didn't get evicted. You just, in our case, because it's all the post-traumatic, you know, Snyder's syndrome. You got there and you just, you knew yourself you didn't belong. And so you wanted to go back anyway because you felt more comfortable there. There was some borderline news yesterday on Jaden's potential return. Dan Gratziano from ESPN and Jeremy Fowler every week kind of write a column on
Starting point is 00:22:45 ESPN.com talking about various things they're hearing. And so there was a whole section on Borough and Daniels and when they'll be back. Gratziano wrote, as for Daniels, the commanders have a buy this weekend, we'll examine everything they've lost six in a row to drop to three and eight in what looked like a promising season. And there has been external debate about whether it makes sense to bring back Daniels at all this season. From what I've been told, the plan in Washington is still that Daniels will return to the starting lineup once doctors clear him from his elbow injury. Fowler wrote, Washington's situation, with Daniels is more complicated, sources have maintained that while Daniels could return as quickly
Starting point is 00:23:26 as three weeks from the occurrence, which would be against Denver, the team is loosely braced for an absence of five to six weeks just in case. That tells me that shutting him down remains a possibility based on his durability this season, three separate injuries and the team's current standing. Big picture talks about how to proceed will play out over the coming days and provide clarity one way or the other. But Gratziano also writes, Daniels will lobby to get back out onto the field as soon as he can. And the fact that the injury he's dealing with right now isn't to his legs or his throwing
Starting point is 00:24:01 arm certainly offers grounds for encouragement. Yeah, I think, like, if he didn't get cleared until, you know, late December and there were only two games left or three games left, that's a different conversation than five or six games left. Now, if there are three games left and it's Eagles, Cowboys, Eagles, I'd like to see him play. That's still three games. If it's one game, that's different. But Tommy, like I mentioned to you the other day and you just brought up, you can't have him fully healthy, chomping at the bit to get out there. In, by the way, now sort of a borderline confrontation with coaches and doctors about playing and he's pissed off. And everybody else
Starting point is 00:24:47 out there is playing even if they're a little bit banged up. You don't have many choices when it's a 46 man game day roster. I mean, they've already pulled up everybody they can pull up. I mean, there are more people they can pull up from the street. But I think, I would think that just everybody out there wants to prove that last year, it can look like last year, even if it's just for three or four games. One other thing real quickly. The other problem just is that the defense, because it's so bad, that's a big part of the support structure for a quarterback. You know, I forget if we talked about this the other day,
Starting point is 00:25:31 but, you know, defense and having a good defense is super important for the offense, obviously. And when you look at the quarterbacks that are succeeding this year, young quarterbacks like Drake May, number one rush defense in the NFL, New England has. You look at Bo Nix, arguably the best defensive football team in the NFL, certainly one of the top two or three. You look at resurrected quarterbacks in recent years, a guy like Sam Darnold, last year with Minnesota's defense, causing mayhem week in and week out. This year, with Seattle's defense. Baker Mayfield's resurrection coincided with being on a team with Todd Bowles as the head coach and the defensive mastermind and a great defense. Like, that's – Caleb Williams right now may not be playing on a team with a great defense,
Starting point is 00:26:25 but they're unbelievable in the takeaway category. I think they're leading the league or their top three in the league in takeaways defensively. Let me just check that. Yeah, they're leading the league. The Bears have 22 takeaways on the season, four more than Jacksonville, who's in second in that category. Washington is next to last in takeaways. Washington last year had a bad defense.
Starting point is 00:26:52 They've got a horrendous defense this year. So the end result of did they win the game or not win the game is somewhat contingent, especially with some of the teams they'll be playing on their defense, keeping them in games. But that's not something that this young quarterbacks had the benefit of. Even a J.J. McCarthy, who's playing really poorly to start his career, does not look the part at all. And there's a long way to go. But he's got Brian Flores in that Minnesota defense to give him the ball, to give him short fields, to get him back out onto the field after teams punt. I mean, Washington just saw a team punt for the first time in a game and a half on Sunday.
Starting point is 00:27:39 So this, by the way, impacts Mario de facto, too. Doesn't matter who's out there. All right. Anything else on our football team? Well, there's more on Jaden we can talk about on the next... Yeah, what's that? He signed some branding deal and people are pissed off. Yeah, with a company called Three Arts Sports.

I know a lot of you are expecting me to give out Houston. There is a lot of public action on Buffalo, but the sharp action is completely split on this game. This isn't one of those games that you look. at and you say the point spreads wrong. You know, Buffalo's minus six on the road. C.J. Stroud's not playing, so it's Davis Mills again. This number doesn't look wrong. The public thinks it looks wrong, but the sharps are split on this game. It's not a play for me tonight to play Houston
Starting point is 00:35:19 plus the six. I will have a slew of picks for the weekend on tomorrow show. No college play either, even though tonight, believe it or not, there was a lot of action on the underdog in the Arkansas State Louisiana game. All right. Anyway, my bookie, promo code, DC Reload. All right, tell me and everybody else about this Jaden Daniels branding or marketing thing that he's entered into. You shared it with me before the show started, so give us all the details. Here's what the Hollywood reporter wrote. Jane Daniels is the latest star athlete looking to turn fame into new business media and entertainment opportunities.
Starting point is 00:36:09 Daniels has signed with three arts sports as the football star looks to launch his own production banner. His partnership will include expanding into original media, brand collaborations, and taking equity, stakes, and business ventures. So that's basically, you know, basically that covers a lot of ground. You know, he could be, he's, he has a piece of a company that does this, I think. Travis Kelsey is one of the athletes
Starting point is 00:36:43 who has signed with this three-arts sport. So is Miles Garrett. Okay, and look, I mean, no one should have expected Jayden Daniels to be a media virgin. I mean, the fact that he pretty much has kept hands off, expanding his media presence to this point, I think is commendable. It's the opposite of what most of the young stars who have come to Washington have done.
Starting point is 00:37:15 He wasn't on family feud in the off season, missing OTAs and stuff. You know, he wasn't producing documentaries. in the off-season. He was going to basketball games and then working on his football game. That's what he was doing. So you can't expect a guy who's one of the most popular players in the league
Starting point is 00:37:38 when he's on the field just to not venture into the media business. Of course he's going to do this. I don't know if there's any reason, and he's shown any reason to think that his number one priority won't always be the football. I think he's smart enough to know that none of this exists without the football.
Starting point is 00:38:01 He's not Mr. Personality, okay? You know, he's not, you know, looking at a future on Good Morning America, I don't think. At least not yet. So football is always going to be the ticket to the other things, not the other way around. So I'm reading. Well, I'm reading this for the first time and hearing about it for the first time. You told me about it before we started to record the show. So I'm thinking about it now.
Starting point is 00:38:31 And I am, I'm thinking that the timing of this announcement isn't in his best interest and that somebody should have thought about that. I don't care at all that he's involved in something like this. In fact, as I'm reading it, this is really, I think, you know, his mother's involvement and leveraging, obviously his name and his brand. I don't think Jaden's going to be intimately involved in any of this stuff, certainly not during the season. He did, I guess there's a statement that he put out, while my focus will always be on football, my team,
Starting point is 00:39:05 and I are excited to tap into opportunities that can help expand my impact off the field. I have no issue at all with this. I just don't think the timing of the announcement is very smart. that's all I would say I think this is an off-season announcement yeah you know that's fair up in New York
Starting point is 00:39:29 you have this great running back Cam Scataboo who's hurt now yeah okay and he's out he can't play well the other night he was at a professional wrestling show
Starting point is 00:39:44 I saw it yeah and and actually became part of the program you know He wound up getting into a so-called, quote, fight with one of the wrestlers. And he was crucified because of the fact that he's not playing, yet he's doing this, yet he's out doing this kind of thing. Right. So that's, you know, that's a legitimate concern for people moving forward, and maybe young people don't grasp it because, you know, it's just social media. It's just having fun to them.
Starting point is 00:40:22 But your point is well taken. The timing is ill advice. Yeah, like the Campbell Soup commercials, I have no problem with that. He should be doing as much as he can to leverage the season he had last year. Chase Young, I had no issues at all with him trying to leverage a defensive rookie of the year's season with commercials. Where I had a problem with it is what you said is when he, didn't show up for even one OTA day, despite having the sea slapped on his jersey at the end of the year, as in Captain. He was the only one out of 90 players, the only one out of 90
Starting point is 00:41:05 that didn't post for one OTA day, not because of commercial shooting exclusively, but because of other things. He could have easily arranged that schedule. I don't see Jaden. Maybe this offseason, we'll change. Maybe he'll change. Maybe we're headed towards, you know, the consumption of his own brand, the self-consumption of his own brand and a completely different person than the one that we've seen for the first year and a half. And he's going to miss OTA days for commercial shoots and for board meetings for three arts and all of these different things. I don't see that happening. If it does, then I will be critical of it. Okay. If he ends up missing, I don't care voluntary or not. If he does what Chase Young did, I'll rip him just like I did Chase Young,
Starting point is 00:41:54 just like all of us did. Most people did. That was a major red flag. You got to show up for some of those things. You have to when you are a team leader, a team captain, and you're the only one out of 90 that didn't post. I can't see Jaden doing that. I don't care what his endorsements are, his business opportunities. These guys should take advantage. of all of that. These careers are short. They're very short-lived. By the way, he has not gotten that, you know, half-billion-dollar contract that he's very likely to get. He hasn't gotten it yet. So I've no problem with this. His mother is, you know, she is his agent. She has his best interests in mind. She's very smart. I've read a couple of things about her. But I don't think
Starting point is 00:42:42 this was smart in terms of the timing. I think the optics on something like this that, you know, maybe they don't care. I think they should care because there is a history in this town in particular of being burned by a superstar talent. And I don't compare those two at all, you know, in the way they play or in the way they conduct themselves. I think they're two completely different human beings, not to mention what we've talked about before. The biggest difference RG3 was in an organization run by Dan Snyder and Jaden Daniels isn't. But if it were me and somebody had said, what do you think about this announcement? I would have said, yeah, let's hold off on that.
Starting point is 00:43:26 Yeah, I know that the three arts wants a press release. You know, you can't do things like this quietly, people. It's not like you do this. And the company is doing this to leverage the brand that Jaden is. And you're not going to put out a press release and tell people. Of course you are. But the timing of it, to me, is not smart. That's all.
Starting point is 00:43:48 but again you know i agree with you but uh unless this kid has been a fraud and i don't think he is uh you know first guy in the building in the in the film room all the time these were not the kind of things that people said about the quarterback that people insist on comparing him to right that well they did for the first part of that that season. But the injury against Baltimore revealed a level of true colors that just, I know that Mike had some reservations about him. And he shared those reservations with Dan and with Bruce before even the draft. He said, I'm concerned that if he faces adversity, we could have a problem. He's never dealt with it. And, you know, my one question to him about a bad game that he
Starting point is 00:44:47 played in. He and his father were throwing, you know, Art Bryles under the bus. It was all, it was everybody else's fault except for his. Remember when he told us that? I thought, and he said, that really concerned me. But we went, we moved forward with it anyway. And also knowing that he wasn't ready to play the position in a normal, traditional sense. But when it really got off the rails, was when he faced adversity for the first time that year. And that was after the injury. And then he wanted to play in Cleveland and talk the owner into telling Mike that we don't care what the doctors say. We want him to play. And Mike, you know, nixed it, said, sorry, the doctor's right. And then Kirk went out and threw for 325 yards without running one zone read. And that was it. He held his own
Starting point is 00:45:36 press conference, RG3 did after that game. And he didn't play in the game. Wow. The whole thing just completely. The relationships, the trust, everything fell apart. Maybe a moment like that is coming for him. I doubt it. Jaden Daniels does not have anywhere near the extroverted personality that RG3 has. This is what I said. Yeah. This is what I said. I don't think he's looking at his career in the future as a host on Good Morning Football. Right. Yeah. I You look at his interviews when he's playing every week in term, you know, like during a week. They're very limited. I mean, he's very short on language.
Starting point is 00:46:24 He's shy. Yes. He's uncomfortable doing those things, no doubt about it. And I would bet that any of these opportunities that he has are, his mother will drive all of them. And she'll say, hey, we just need. you to show up for this event, you know, in April or in July, you know, in July before camp starts or whatever. Look, subject to change if he starts missing offseason activities to further his brand after, you know, a five and 12 season. I just think ultimately, you know, if they were
Starting point is 00:47:06 reading the room and if they understood the market in which they're in, they would have held off on something like this until after the season. And maybe long after the season ended. So we're really... And by the way, maybe he's got a chance to come back and have, you know, three or four unbelievable games that lead to wins. And it's like, okay, well, you know,
Starting point is 00:47:28 he had his guys back and we're good. And then that kind of an announcement in February or March would have been okay. That's all I got on this. What else do you have? I got nothing else on it. But, you know, here's, from their point of view, it's a leap of faith that Jaden Daniels is the quarterback we think he is. From the three arts standpoint?
Starting point is 00:47:54 Yes. Sure. But, I mean, nobody outside of this, I shouldn't say nobody. I can't imagine that many people in football believe that Jaden Daniels last year was a complete, complete. you know, fluke. I just don't think that. I think people saw an elite level talent who has been hurt this year and when he's been out there hasn't had a legitimate NFL team around him, you know, in the form of a receiver or two. All right. A couple of other things to finish up with. Maryland basketball had an unbelievable day and night yesterday. Joe Jacoby got close.
Starting point is 00:48:40 closer to the Hall of Fame. We'll get to those two things to finish up the show right after these words from a few of our sponsors. You can find out more at shelley's backroom.com. Maryland basketball had one of the most incredible days, Tommy, yesterday, and then last night. I talked about it on the podcast yesterday at the very beginning that this kid from Blake High School in Silver Spring, Baba a lot of ton, that a lot of us had been hearing throughout the day that he was going to announce that he was going to Maryland. He's, you know, somewhere from
Starting point is 00:53:46 the fifth best player in the country to the 10th best player in the country. He was the number one player in 27, but he reclassed into this particular 2026 class. It was down to Kentucky, Arkansas, Georgetown and Maryland, and he announced last night he's coming to Maryland. He's been referred to as kind of a baby Durant. He plays stylistically very much like Kevin Durant. He's 6-9, 6-10, has a handle, can shoot it. He's, by the way, only 16 years old. So reclassing, he'll enter next season as a 17-year-old.
Starting point is 00:54:25 Right now, he's projected in the 2027 NBA draft anywhere. from number three to number seven, I've seen, you know, in the, you know, two years away mock drafts or a year and a half away mock drafts. He is, for Maryland, the highest recruit since Diamond Stone. There's a lot out there for you, Terp fans. You know, there are all these different services. You can find a service where Diamond Stone was rated higher than Baba,
Starting point is 00:54:54 and you can find services where Baba was slightly rated higher than Diamond Stone. Derek Queen was not a top 10 player. He was top 15. I think it was somewhere between like 13 and 16, somewhere like that. Jalen Stick Smith was more 15 to 20. It does mark, though, for the Terps, an unbelievable run. Three straight years of landing a five star. Derek Queen and then Darius Adams, who by the way was 17 of 21 from the free throw line last night. I'll get to that game in a moment. And now Baba. Maryland's class right now elevated to either number two or number three in the country. Kansas, Michigan State, and Maryland have the top three incoming classes for the 2026 season. You know, I saw a lot of things on Twitter. Maryland's never had to recruit this high. Just for those of us of a certain age, and I know I have some listeners to this podcast,
Starting point is 00:55:53 who are Maryland people of that same age. Lefty Drizell in the 1970s recruited the number one player in the country four times four times in that decade. Tom McMillan was the number one player in the country. Believe it or not, his year, Bill Walton was two and McMillan was one.
Starting point is 00:56:17 Moses Malone was the runaway number one high school player in the country. Some people think Moses Malone, even to this day, might be the greatest high school basketball. player and the most dominant high school basketball player of all time. Now, he did not play at Maryland. Lefty, you know, he told us the story when we did the lunch with a legend years ago that the Utah Stars came and offered him a half million dollars. And he said, you go back and tell them to bring you a million dollars cash and you'll do it. They came back and they opened up the suitcase in his house on the couch or the bed and there was a million dollars there. And
Starting point is 00:56:54 Lefty said, go ahead, take it, and he went to the Utah stars of the ABA. Albert King was the number one player in the country in 1977, signed with Maryland. And Reggie Jackson is the one that most Terp fans don't really remember. He was the number one player in the country at a Roman Catholic in Philadelphia in 1978 or 79, one of those two years, and Maryland got him. So Maryland with Lefty was always known as kind of the incredible recruiting college basketball program. I mean, Lefty just kept getting them. But in this century, yeah, this is a huge get. Here's what I would just say real quickly, and I'll tell you about the
Starting point is 00:57:38 rest of their day in a moment. You know, in today's college sports environment, getting older, more advanced, more experienced players through the transfer portal really has been more important, you know, because a guy like Baba is probably staying one year. That's it. And he'll be a very young player. And the NBA will draft a very young and raw player. The teams that are really making strides and turning it around quickly are those schools that are doing well in the transfer portal, you know, recruiting 21, 22, and 23-year-olds, not. 16 and 17 or 18-year-olds, but this is still a huge get. And then last night, Tommy, two things happened for Maryland basketball.
Starting point is 00:58:33 One, Pharrell Payne, who had a gruesome-looking injury in their win over Marquette, turns out it looks like he's going to be okay. He might be back for the games in Vegas next week against UNLV and Gonzaga. That's a huge, huge piece of news because he's there, he's probably, their best player. And it looked like he broke his leg in this game against Marquette. And then Marilyn trailing by five against Mount St. Mary's last night, with two and a half minutes to go, they came back, they won an overtime, 95-90, and their transfer point guard from Kansas, Diggy Coit, C-O-I-T, Diggy is his nickname, scored 41 points in the game. Maryland was
Starting point is 00:59:23 without three of its projected starters, no pain, no Miles Rice, no Solomon Washington last night. So they were injured, you know, going into the game, and Diggy Coyt dug them out of a hole, and they ended up winning 95, 90 in overtime. That 41 point game from Diggy Coyt last night, the most ever at Xfinity Center by a Terp team or an opposing team. 41 on 11 of 17 from the floor, eight of ten from behind the arc. He was incredible. He hit the three that tied it to force overtime, and he is just a flat-out score. He had started, you know, he's small.
Starting point is 01:00:03 He's a 5-11, you know, 5-10, 5-11 point guard, started his career at Northern Illinois as a prolific score, and then didn't really get the run last year, Kansas that he wanted. Now he's at Maryland, and he is off to a great start. The Maryland record is 44 points. Ernie Graham in 78 had 44 in a game against NC State, and still those of us that remember it swear that if there had been a three-point line, he would have had 50 because six of his buckets came from about 30 feet out. He was an absolute streaky shooter in score. Ernie Graham still holds the record for 44 in a game. The 41, though, the most since Gravis
Starting point is 01:00:45 Vasquez went for 41 at Virginia Tech back in 2010. So there was the signing of Baba, the information on Pharrell Payne, and then the win over Mount St. Mary's with, you know, three starters essentially out and this 41-point performance. I'll also add Derek Queen last night against the guy that he modeled his game after, Nicola Yokic, had 30 against Denver, and I think it was like eight and seven, something like that. Even Yokic was asked about him afterwards, and he said, loves his game, loves the unorthy. doc's nature of his game. You know, he was asked over and over again.
Starting point is 01:01:24 He's been compared to you. He's been compared stylistically, and he said, yeah, there's some similarities. But Derek Queen's having quite the year. So good for Maryland basketball, unbelievable for Buzz Williams. That is such a massive get because it's a top five to top 10 local player. Tommy, three of the top 10 on ESPN's top 100 are. are from the DMV, 14 of the top 100 or from the DMV. This area is just loaded.
Starting point is 01:02:00 Buzz Williams making a good first impression here. He is. All right. Last thing we wanted to touch on is Joe Jacoby is in that group of now nine semi-finalists in the senior category for the Hall of Fame. So, you know, Ken Anderson's in that group. There are a couple of other, you know, interesting names. Henry Ellard, Roger Craig.
Starting point is 01:02:22 I think Otis Taylor is in that course. Otis Taylor, I knew you were going to mention him because you love those chief teams. But, you know, this could be the year. They're going to narrow it down to three, and then those three will be voted on in February. Let's hope he makes that next cut,
Starting point is 01:02:37 and they go to, you know, Super Bowl week with, you know, a chance for Jake to get in. That would be great. It would be. It would certainly be overdue. Let's hope it happens this time. All right, Tommy, no pick for a game on Sunday because they don't play on Sunday, which means they can't lose on Sunday. I will talk to you on Tuesday.
Starting point is 01:03:00 See you, boss.
