Westchester. Shit. No, I didn't go. Why? I said it's too hot. It's going to be 98 degrees there. I said it's too hot to drive anywhere, especially three hours. Too hot to drive somewhere?

Do you have air conditioning in your car? Yeah, we have air conditioning, but what happens, God forbid, if the car breaks down? And we're on the side of the Pennsylvania turnpike. Well, you'd get picked up and taken somewhere cool. I mean, you're not going to be in the middle of the desert somewhere. Well, it would feel like the middle of the desert. And I just said, no, it's too hot. So basically shades drawn in the house.

The only venturing out was to my local cigar establishment to have a spoke, and then back home. And that is all I did during this whole heat stretch. Well, it's a good thing. The car didn't break down on your way to the cigar. shop. You know, don't be an asshole.

You know, that's a reasonable conclusion. I mean, we weren't going to have a cookout. We weren't going to be sitting out there

in 98-degree temperature eating burgers. Right. And it's a six-hour drive back and forth. I played golf on Friday morning

and I played golf on Saturday morning, the two hottest days of the year. Why am I even talking to you about this? You know, you're like an alien. I, well, let me just tell you, it was crowded out there.

People wanted to get out early, and there was a Fourth of July event, a golf event that I played in. And, you know, we were in carts, so when the carts are moving, there's a little bit of a breeze, and you can find shade. And it really, and truly wasn't that bad. I will tell you, though, that late Saturday when I got back on the fourth, after playing in the heat for two straight days, I didn't feel well. And so the fourth was pretty much, we stayed in. There was a neighborhood barbecue that we briefly attended, and that was it. but it was the heat definitely took a toll if you were out in it like I was for you know four or five hours on Friday and Saturday and then yesterday when the

storms came through it was lovely last evening very nice yeah felt good I'm a little offended why that uh that you waited till now to ask me how I was because you know I mean during the heat wave check on your elder friends you were elderly friends Yes. Yes. And you didn't check once. I didn't check once. That's true. I should have reached out to make sure that you were inside, shades drawn, staying cool. Yes. Yes. You're right. I apologize. I apologize. I was thinking about you, though. What do you think it was like to be it? Like, I'll tell you, can you imagine, you know, on Friday, Saturday being out at the ballpark? in the non-shaded sections watching the Nats and the Pirates?

Like, that would be brutal. There's no way I could just sit in the sun. You've got to have the ability to get to shade or get into a pool or get into the ocean to kind of cool yourself off. But I saw some of the highlights. What do you think would be the worst jobs to have? On hot days? Yeah.

Well, I mean, anybody that's got a lot. work outside on concrete, on pavement somewhere. That would be a terrible job. Yes. Being a baseball player wouldn't be the worst job. You're getting paid well for it. Yeah. I remember I was thinking when I was going into my cigar shop,

there was a garbage truck going around my neighborhood picking up trash. And I thought, oh, man. Well, that's got to be a miserable job today. All due respect to those people. that job probably isn't great on cloudy and cool days either. I know. I know, but this one. I know.

So, I mean, it was brutal. You know what was brutal is for Belgium tonight. They're going to face the U.S.'s either best player or second best player, Flo Balligan, who all of a sudden out of thin air was reinstated after he was, given a red card, which many people thought was kind of bogus in their win over Bosnia. And then FIFA, with perhaps some urging from President Trump, decided to rescind the red card, suspend the red card for up to a year, and allow him to play in tonight's game. This has the soccer world, Tommy, up in arms.

And the rest of the soccer world that isn't U.S., they don't like it for the most part. This is, you know, according to those that follow the sport, this is unprecedented. This is something that should have never been done. This is American favoritism. This is unfair. It's not in the spirit of the competition. And the U.S., if they win tonight, it's going to be, I think, tainted a bit.

What do you think? I know you're following this very closely. Yes. I find with much amusement. I mean, because FIFA is one of the most corrupt organizations in the world. Along with the IOC, right? Yes. But FIFA in particular, far worse than the IOC.

You know? And the idea that Trump could influence this is, it seems natural to me. It seems the natural order of things. Right. Because world... This is some unusual. Right. So,

uh, and, uh, I mean, I don't know. You know, the one thing I find humorous, I'm sorry about this.

But the only reason this guy plays, uh, at the United States is through his birthright citizenship. Oh, is that right? I didn't know that. Yeah. That's interesting.

Yes. Um, I find that kind of humorous myself. But, you know, I mean, I, I find the whole,

uh, If you're kind of humorous, I think it only generates and gins up more interest than it was before, you know, because people perceive, you know, millions around the world perceive an injustice and want to see justice meet it out to the United States and the United States feels like they were wrong, so people will tune in to see right over might. I think it's going to gin up everything. And here's the best part. No, here's not the best part. Here's the best part of you going on vacation. I don't have to talk about it. Well, I'm going to watch it.

And where I'm going to be in Europe again, so it's a big deal over there. I got this from Steve. Steve wrote, I agree with everything you said. He was listening to the radio. show, and I'll get to what I said in a moment. Basically, I thought it was the wrong decision by FIFA, but I'm sort of

glad that the decision was made because this is a good player, gives the U.S. a chance. I will confess, Tommy, I did, once that decision was handed down, I immediately placed a wager on Belgium to

win tonight. At plus 180, I have the Red Devils of Belgium. And what we call that, for those of you unfamiliar, we call that the happiness hedge in betting. If the U.S. wins, I'm fine with it because the U.S. wins. If they lose, I win some money. So that is the happiness hedge. But once he was reinstated for this game, everybody was loading up on the U.S. So I decided I would go ahead and play Belgium. But Steve wrote, I agree with everything you've said when Trump put himself in the middle of this FIFA had little choice,

though they are as corrupt as he is. This is what I would do if I were the head of US men's soccer. I would keep my mouth shut and just not play Baligan. Leave him on the bench and rely on his presence. Any victory with Baligan playing is tainted and will reflect on the players and team forever. There's not a lot of sportsmanship in the World Cup, but this would give the team huge kudos and turn a negative into a big win for U.S. soccer. One more.

God. One more thing. Remember, with a man down when they, remember, they played 10 on 11 against Bosnia, the U.S. scored a goal and won that game. Yeah, I do agree with one part of this. I agree that, based on the outrage from the rest of the world, let me just explain this best I can. I'm not an expert. There appears to be

no precedent for this. People were pointing to the 62 World Cup. The rule did not exist that red cards automatically meant a one-game suspension. The Ronaldo suspension was in qualifying, and

they did rescind that, but that was qualifying leading into the World Cup. It wasn't in the midst of a World Cup or an international competition. itself. This is a pretty hard and fast rule. If you get a red card, you're suspended from the next game. You're kicked out of the game you're in. You're suspended from the next game. And that's just the way it's been. And there's no mechanism for rescinding it. There's no mechanism for

going back and reviewing it and then having the rule changed. And this is why so many around the world are upset. Like this was the statement, I'm sure this is a corrupt organization too because it seems like all of the soccer organizations are corrupt. But this is UEFA, the European Football Association. Their

statement read, quote, yesterday's decision to suspend for a probationary period of a year, the implementation of the one match automatic suspension following the red card issued to the player following Balligan,

a red line. Football like any sports relies on rules, which are the basis for fair, honest, and transparent competition. Sometimes rules are open to interpretation. In this case, not. A minimum automatic suspension of one match following a red card is not a discretionary option and does not require the decision of a competent body to be enacted. It is a principle embedded in regulations which cannot be made subject to exceptions, let alone in the middle of a tournament where several other players have been in the same situation and regularly served their suspension. When the certainty of rules is no longer guaranteed by its guardians, the integrity of the game is at stake and the credibility of a competition is undermined.

Equally, such decision creates a precedent in the ongoing tournament where similar situations will now require an equal treatment to the detriment of the competition. and they go on and on, ending with, we express our disbelief at such an unprecedented, incomprehensible, and unjustifiable decision. Close quote. Now, of course, that is the UEFA. They're the European Football Association. Belgium is in Europe, I'm pretty sure.

US plays Belgium tonight. This is really, I know you're not that. excited to talk about this, which is fine. I watched a lot of World Cup over the weekend. I do have some thoughts in some of the games and teams. I'm going to break down some strategy and have some analysis here for you in a moment. Just kidding. But I think the worst part of this is that if they win tonight and they are favored to win tonight, it's going to feel around the world as if America was the co-host of the 2026 World Cup was done a solid somehow and this wouldn't have been done for anybody else.

I don't think that means anything to a significant amount of people. I don't know if it's a majority. I think it could be. I don't think they could care less. Who? Which people? Oh, you mean the U.S.? Yeah. Okay. I would have preferred that this not happen. Look, they played pretty well without him against Bosnia.

I don't know what it would have meant tonight. But we'll see. Now, Belgium, as of the recording of this podcast, they are appealing this ruling, so we may get a change. Well, I think that peels have been turned down. Oh, was it turned down? Okay. Yeah.

You know, what that emailer described, that's like a Disney movie, you know, where the team that gets the favoritism. It's so true. Because of the corrupt leader sits down the player purposely for the game and yet still wins. Still wins. That's a Disney movie. But what if they lose and they did that? Well, no, they win. It's a movie. Right. But we don't know that it's a movie yet because they have to win.

Right. And they'd have to set them. I also got this from Evan. Evan wrote, where is it? I had it a second ago. Evan wrote the following. He wrote, Kevin, I grew up in Rockville, huge burgundy and gold fan, first time reaching out to you. By the way, Tommy, just as an aside, I have taken. calls on the radio show on soccer multiple times now over the last week.

I mean, the number of people that are paying attention to this and into this, I could have taken calls just on this subject alone, the entire show today. An hour I took calls. But again, you do realize that most of those people, once the World Cup is over. Of course, of course, yes. I'm just saying that, because I'm going to read this email, and I think part of what this Evan from Los Angeles, Evan writes, is somewhat true.

But I think the larger point isn't, but we'll get to it here in a moment. He said, Kevin, I grew up in Rockville, huge Burgundy gold fan, first time reaching out to you. I've been surprised, but very impressed with your World Cup interest. You've said that you've been a fan of the World Cup since the sports fix, but this is the most you've ever talked about it on your show. I played college soccer and had a cup of coffee professionally playing, but flamed out pretty quickly.

No, I wasn't. No, it wasn't. I would have been messy if not for my knee injuries. I do like the guys that, you know, played high school sports, and they say, you know, if not for my knee injury, I mean, I probably would have started for North Carolina. I just wasn't good enough, but I've stayed involved with the game playing in,

coaching for the last 15 years, mostly in SoCal. I think there's a chance that this World Cup will be the event to turn America onto soccer like never before. I know I know. What's this email written in 1994? Or 1974? What was it written in 2000? Yeah. I mean, how many times have we heard? I know. He writes, I know people like me have been saying it for years, but this one will benefit from the age of social media on repeat with some of the best games the cup has ever had. I don't think the MLS will see the uptick from American interest, but American interest of elite European soccer will rise. And if the U.S. wins the World Cup, it'll be the game changer for real. So let me just real quickly mention that this is by far and away.

in terms of ratings, for whatever they're worth, the most watched World Cup ever in the U.S. The 24.4 million viewers for the Bosnia win is the most ever for a World Cup U.S. men's event. And I do feel anecdotally, Tommy, that more people are interested in this World Cup. And I don't know, maybe it's because it's in the U.S. Maybe it's because the U.S. men's team is good. Maybe it's because... Because it's in the U.S. Why?

Why would it be because it's in the U.S.? Oh, because it's not in the U.S. every four years? I understand that. But every game's still on TV in the same way. Doesn't have the same impact. I think it would have more to do personally with the U.S. men's team being good. And then I do agree with Evan. some of these games haven't been your typical, oh my God, this soccer thing, when are they going to score?

So boring. There have been controversial games, exciting games that even I think are exciting. And I don't like the sport generally. But in terms of this is going to be it. No, I'm with Tommy. This is the same conversation that's been going on since I was a kid in the North American. and Soccer League had Pele in New York and Croyfe in D.C. And every iteration of this in our country is the same conversation.

This is going to be the one. It never is. Let me let me let me just explain how I do think soccer will grow in this country. I do think that there's some time in the next 20 to 30 years where soccer will have a much more significant place. in the American sports landscape than it does now. Okay. I think my theory, it's just a theory.

I think in part that's because of the growth of the Hispanic population in this country. I think sports, the passionate interest in sports is tied to

tradition. It's tied to family. It's tied to any number of personal things. That's why for most Americans, soccer was not a factor

growing up, or for the generation that it was, it was something their parents made them play when they were little kids. But for Hispanics, for people who come from Mexico, from Latin America, from South America, places like that,

it's part of their heritage. You know, it's part of the tradition. Oh, my God. Did you see the Mexicans last night? That place was just insane. The singing of the national anthem, the tears, the emotion. It's just, it's part of, it's part of the DNA of all of these other countries. Yes, it is.

That's what will grow in this country. Okay. The population. Yeah. We've had that. We've had that population change for 25 years now. It's not like it's a new thing. You know, what's, I think, interesting is that you end up getting the sport that grows from, you know, the changes demographically in our country, the sport that just continues to grow is football, our football.

And people with different roots and different heritages and different, you know, rooting. interests in many ways the NFL captures them too, much more than soccer catches, you know, a long-time American sports fan. I don't know. Let me ask you this. Yeah. Let me ask you this. I mean, if they're talking about most of the soccer officinados, if they think there will

be more interest in soccer, I think your emailer said this, there would be more interest in the elite games that are not played in the United States that are played overseas. Right. Just like the NFL interest for a lot of these foreign countries, although they go over there and actually play the games.

My question is, if if you're watching games from teams in a foreign country play each other, does that count as opposed to

the game taking root in the country where you live. Well, you're not helping the game in your own country. You're helping it for the rest of the world because nobody in the U.S., well, then networks would benefit because they do. I mean, NBC and Peacock, they carry the Premier League, I believe. And people watch it. Yeah, and people do watch it. I mean, I think it's a reasonable question.

Yeah. I don't know what the answer is. I think also if this guy were right, and this was the game changer, the World Cup of 2026, then theoretically, if there was a lot more interest here in soccer, then maybe some of the best players in the world would want to play here. And so the MLS would become a much better league. Now, from what I've been told from people who know, the MLS is much better now than it used to be and is somewhat competitive. competitive with, you know, maybe not the top four or five leagues, but it comes in, you know, after the five or six or seven top leagues. It's not like terrible soccer anymore. USA, USA, we're six best, buddy.

Well, look, I think, well, I can only speak for myself. When this World Cup is over, I don't think I'll watch another soccer game until the Euro thing in two years. because I've watched some of that over the years. Again, it happens more often than not when nothing else is going on. But I'm not into soccer. This is not... In fact, I have to say that over the last week, unlike the first two or three weeks of this thing,

the two things that drive me nuts the most. And really, if it wasn't... If the rest of the stuff didn't exist, the pageantry, the drama, the importance. I wouldn't watch this thing. Because the flopping is just too much. This is not comparable to. I hear people say all the time,

well, you're an NBA fan. They're not even close to comparable. Somebody flops without contact, rolls around screaming at the top of their lungs and the clock continues to run. Sometimes the game continues to run. and then when they don't get a call, it's amazing. But like five minutes after they were rolling around on the ground,

they're up playing again. I think for a lot of longtime, passionate American sports fans, that's never going to help the cause. It's always going to hurt the cause. And then the clock is just, I mean, I don't, I'm not knocking the rest of the world for not caring that you don't know when the game's going to end. I just, I can't, I can't, it's hard to deal with that.

I mean, the Brazil Norway game yesterday, Brazil got a penalty kick after the plus 11 was up. They scored, Neymar scored the penalty kick. And then the referee extends the game and gives them another chance for a rush. We're way past the plus stoppage time. and just randomly they end the game. That would be hard to get used to, really hard to get used to. If I grew up with that, and it probably wouldn't bother me. I've heard people say there's some drama in not knowing when the game's going to end.

You know, there's an anticipation of looking and staring down the referee. What a rationalization that is. That's what they'll say. That, you know, you get to that point. If you're the team that's up, you're staring at the referee, waiting for him to blow the whistle that the game's over. You're looking at the stoppage time. You're looking at the clock.

It's never exactly, there's no countdown. You'll never have, you know, a 10, 9, 8 crowd counting down to a championship. You can't have that in soccer. They don't care. But if you're the team behind, you're like, is he going to give us another chance? or maybe he's not in a mood to give us another chance. Who knows?

That's really, really hard. It would be hard for me to get used to. Because if I've got a significant rooting interest and my team's behind, I'd like to know exactly how much time we have left to try to tie the game up. I'd like to know. You're best to clock management.

Yeah. I just don't. And the flopping in recent games is, just every time it happens, I'm like, why do I can, why am I still watching this? This is really hard to watch. It's, it's, there's a theater aspect to it and the acting's terrible. It's just terrible. Um, but all the rest of it, like when Mexico scored that goal last night down to nothing right before the end of the half, I don't think I've heard a crowd explode like that in anything for a long time. That was an insane.

insane environment. And they said that the Azteca stadium, that that's one of the great cathedrals in all of soccer worldwide. And the English won that game. And Tommy, I've now seen two games where the team that lost a player to a red card and was down a man, scored a goal and won the game. The U.S. did it against Bosnia and England did it last night against Mexico. that was a devastating loss for Mexico. And the English, they had to wait until, I think, 2 a.m. local time to start watching it, but the pub stayed open all night long. Man, I will say some of these games are, I mean, some of these players are really,

this guy, Halland from Norway, he's a freak, like athlete. And obviously, Messi and Rinaldo and, and some of these other guys. I got from France. Oh, Mbapé. That game, Paraguay, they didn't have a chance, I guess, going into this game. So they really tried to muck it up.

They were trying to get fights started. It was an interesting watch. I will just say this since you brought up France. In watching a lot of this over the last month, I think France and Spain, and even Morocco, actually. France and Spain in particular, you know, like in the past, people will say, well, the Americans are okay, but they're just not world class. They're not in the class of the best teams.

And I don't even know what that meant. They can explain it. But in watching this closely and more closely than I've ever watched a World Cup, you can see the differences between certain teams. And France and Spain, to me, look different. Like they pass it better. They're more decisive. They're quick. And then Mbapé is like Kyrie Irving with the ball between his feet.

I mean, the crossovers, you can tell those guys are different. And I don't think the U.S. has those kind of guys. I know that this Polisic and the guy that's coming back tonight, whatever. I mean, man, we've done a lot of World Cup talk. Let me just finish with this. Okay. What I've always said is more true than ever as the excitement grows and there's more interest. Okay?

Look around at the next watch party. Oh, I know. I know. Or maybe your Aunt Mary, who never talks to you about sports, is wants to talk about the World Cup or your cousin Frank or somebody like that. This is the sport for people who don't like sports. I think that's your line and you've always said it. I think that that is, I mean, I'm not taking it literally.

I think it is the sport for people who aren't passionate sports fans, passionate American sports fans in this country. If you're a casual sports fan, this is something that you grab a hold of because you kind of feel like you're part of something that not everybody's into. And it, for whatever reason, makes you feel better about it. I don't think those people know the sport any better than you and I do in terms of watching it and understanding it. But do you still feel like the Seattle Seahawks could win the cup if they went to soccer camp for three weeks? Absolutely. Yeah. weekend. I'll let you begin. well you know I think I think I you've had a follow-up a video to this kind of indicating that you know everything was okay but it's it's very

it's just a man there's no way there is zero chance that Washington brings him here this this furor this attention just no way possibly

to create this kind of attention this kind of negative attention surrounding you know in connection with the team there's just no way it's impossible I mean if we're frustrated by it imagine what if you own the team

what you're thinking of this stuff you know if you're connected with the team what you're thinking of this it's not a different language You know, it's not a generation gap, okay? This is absurd. The fan that yelled at Jaden Daniels did so at a World Cup match that Jaden Daniels was attending. It wasn't like he came up on the street. They were shooting video of Jaden Daniels at SoFi for a World Cup game, and the fan was, you know, screaming F Brandon I, F. Brandon Ayuk, F. Brandon Iuk, you better not throw blank to him next year. I'm a Niner fan, F. Brandon Ayuk.

And Jaden was kind of smiling, which is what prompted the video. By the way, Ben mentioned to me, and I didn't see this, but there was the guy Grant Cohn, who I had on the show not that long ago, who has a blog or a podcast covering the 49ers out in Northern California, he posted something about how Jaden's mom was not too pleased with this latest exchange or tweet from, or social media video, excuse me,

from Brandon Ayuk. And she retweeted it and then pulled the retweet, tweet pretty quickly, but they caught it. You know, I saw a lot of people discussing this as Jaden and Brandon Ayuk trolling fans. If that's true, it was a bad decision by Jaden Daniels. I'll start there. I mean, I love Jaden Daniels. And this guy may be a friend.

I don't know that we really know how close they are or how close they are. right now. If this was an actual, you know, social media back and forth where Jaden was not happy with, you know, Brandon Ayuk running his mouth. And I think Brandon Ayuk's response is a bit sort of like, you know, you're on my team now. Five's going to text me talking about you're on my team now. You follow my rules. Boy, I'm a grown-up ass, you know, man. You're going to have to start running behind your mama and I might believe what you're talking about, but until then, you know, like, I don't, I don't know if they were trolling everybody or if it was a legitimate, you know, on air, on social media dispute.

But in either case, my recommendation to Jaden Daniels would be to steer clear of this guy on social media where any sort of exchange with him can be made public. Just like he made the video that you sent him from OTAs or mini camp in 2024, and he made that public on social media. You don't look good if you're trolling everybody or if you're in an argument with him on social media. The perception by most people with any level of sort of emotional intelligence is going to be like, dude, steer clear of this guy. let Adam Peters make the call, let the team make the call on this, and you can certainly

weigh in, but don't get into this month-long barrage of strange video messages from this guy, who has been incredibly self-destructive over the last year and last month. So I kind of came up with like a pros and cons list. If you were like Adam Peters and you were like, all right, here are the pros, here are the cons on this thing at this point. The pros are like, it's a very small list. He's talented and we need another playmaker on offense. That's the pros list. There's no other pro.

By the way, talented, he was talented. We're not sure if he's still talented. And we need a player that is as talented as he was for our team offensively. But then you get to the cons list. And I specifically wrote down on the cons list things that are not debatable because there's a lot of debate, a lot of, there is a lot of subjectivity because we don't know a lot, really, other than what he's done to himself and what he's put out there in videos. But here are the things that I think aren't even debatable at this point, and they would be cons for me. I think there'll be cons for Adam Peters in Josh Harrison Company. Who knows what they're thinking?

Number one is he's immature. Obviously he's immature. You don't handle this kind of of situation with a barrage of social media videos that primarily focus on attacking publicly over and over again your employer. You're sensitive, you're immature. your feelings are hurt, you're angry, and he's lashed out with nothing but words, no action. And he's had the ability to take some action to actually affect an outcome that he claims he desires. He's all talk at this point, definition of immature.

Secondly, Tommy, and I think more importantly, he's incredibly self-destructive. This is not debatable even close to debatable. He's already cost himself $30-plus million in guaranteed dollars because he didn't show up to have his knee looked at by his current employer when he was rehabbing outside of the team. By the way, people tweeted me and said, where is it? Somebody tweeted me and said, oh, by the way, this was Keep the logo. By the way, looks like Brandon Ayuk didn't have to do his injury rehab with the team.

that rips apart the idea the 49ers had the right to take his money. Keep the logo, you're an idiot, okay, for falling for that. He said that he didn't have to do his rehab with the team. Everybody knows that. That's a given. He's trying to create the illusion that the arguments about him doing rehab for the team. That's never been the argument. You can rehab outside of your team, but contractually, he had to allow the team to monitor his rehab.

And that's what he did not do, which is why they were able to take $30 million from him in guaranteed money. And they haven't even put up a fight to try to get it back. That's self-destructive. It's self-destructive to videotape yourself breaking the law, going 100 miles per hour around Levi Stadium, and then posting it on social media. All right, that's self-destructive. because it resulted in an arrest warrant. Not a serious arrest warrant, but it's an arrest warrant. I don't know.

I guess arrest warrants just in general, I think, are serious, even if it is for a misdemeanor. And then, by the way, in videos last week, he admitted he was ducking the arrest. Okay, this is all self-destructive behavior. He's immature, con number one. And I would add, overly sensitive. Number two, he's self-destructive.

And then number three, he has revealed to the next employer that the first time there's any sort of adversity in the relationship, he doesn't like how many targets he got in a game. He doesn't like that he wasn't allowed to wear different practice gear than what the team required him to wear. whatever it is. And I'm just mentioning the things that have happened in San Francisco. He has already told the world that if it doesn't work out for him, he is going to nuke you publicly. Yes. Nor nuke you. Scorched earth. Absolutely.

He is going. And then obviously, you know, you've got the cons, which would be football reasons. He hasn't played in two years. and he's coming off a serious knee injury that could potentially impact his ability to be the player that he was in 2023. And then I would add to all this just, you know, the feeling that you got to have about him that may not be anything more than a feeling, but my gut is this isn't a serious person. And if I'm Adam Peters, I've worked my ass off with Dan Quinn and with Man. management and ownership to change the culture of this franchise.

And he feels like square peg round hole. He just does. Oh, and then I would add to the con list, we've got to consider whether or not we have the stomach to handle what will be a very critical response to us signing him from a lot of corners of the fan base, a fan base that is still not back in full. He wouldn't have been nearly as controversial

prior to the last month. But now he is. And so we're going to have to deal with all of that. I don't know. To me, the cons way outweigh the pros. And I've been out for a few weeks now. I'm going to guess that the team is out. I tend to agree with you that there's no way

that a grown-up team is going to take this guy on. No way. things change. He could, you know, over the next month and they don't report to camp for another three and a half weeks. You know, he could have somebody in his life that says, all right, we got to fix this. It starts with you publicly apologizing for the last month, publicly apologizing for not, you know, living up to your contract and allowing the team to review your knee. Then we're going to go, we're going to sit down with the team. We're going to try to work this out face to face like grownups do, not on social media.

and see if we can get you released. And we need you to be in shape. We need you to be healthy. We need you to be ready to play football and focused on only football, period. That's it. You have to show you are a serious human being that's grown up and actually wants to play football. Because nothing you've done has said that you really want to play football and you're serious about it. Everything you've said has indicated that, but nothing that you've done.

has indicated that. Until then, you know, and that could change the way Adam Peters feels, but I would bet right now that they have basically said,

yeah, we're not going to do this. We were going to do this. We're not going to do this anymore. He's too self-destructive. My God. No, I mean,

it's unbelievable, and we contribute to it, but, you know, this is the business. the amount of tension and discussion for a player who has nothing to do with the franchise. Except that it has something to do with the franchise because he's expressed. I know he doesn't.

I know, but he keeps expressing his desire to play here. You know, somebody sent this to me, where is it? Dante Wittner, who I had on the show back in March, who was very critical. This is another, by the way, for you, those of you that are big, you know, Brandon Ayuk supporters and think everybody else is off their rocker, nobody in his orbit is supportive of him. Nobody. We played the T.J. Hoosha Manzada sound last week. He said if Adam Peter signs him Adam Peter should be fired on the spot. This was his personal coach and friend.

Dante Wittner said over the weekend, quote, When Ayyuk said he didn't care about how much money he lost to get away from the 49ers, he thought he was in the clear. He thought they couldn't get anything else from him. And guess what? Boy, was he wrong? His mouth wrote a check that his ass can't cash. He doesn't have that $13 to $18 million with the way that he's been spending and the way that he's been splurging.

I think the 49ers should do everything they can to recoup every dollar that they can get back from him. and if he doesn't have the money, guess where it comes from? His future contracts. These are former players, people that are closer to this, and by my count, nine out of ten are not supportive of him at all. Usually there's a mix here, but the mix seems to be coming from primarily our fan base and a portion of it that thinks everybody that's critical of

Rand and Ayuk is off their rocker and that this is just a grand strategy and he's playing chess. I just, he's too self-destructive. The chess games already been lost. That's done. Yes. Because the only contract he's going to get is going to be a one-year prove-it deal if he even gets that. So he's talked his number down from where it would have been. a month ago, and he's already lost $30 million, and the reports are the 49ers as Dante Wittner suggested, they're

Washington, Tommy, today signed a corner, Rasul Douglas, who was in Philly for a few years. Green Bay. Buffalo was in Miami last year, 30 years old, a taller corner, an outside corner.

Several people reached out to me today after the radio show to say, do you think it's because they're concerned that Trey Amos isn't. going to be healthy. I don't think that's it. I think they're just looking for depth at corner. It's a position that obviously was not very good. Last year's safety end corner, the secondary in general. But look, they decided in the offseason. They added a Meek Robertson in free agency, and they've been very pleased with him so far. I think there are a couple of players that so far they're excited about. It's just, you know, offseason stuff. But I think Rashad White offensively they're excited about. I think they're excited about,

Chig, Akonquo, Van Jefferson, and I think, uh, for sure, they are excited about Amique Robertson, but he's more of an inside corner,

more likely than not. I think they've addressed their secondary by adding a lot of pass rush. They had an emphasis on, we got to get better in our front seven. We've got to put more pressure on the opposing passer and Oway and chase on and Omanihue, et cetera. Um,

that's how they're going. And obviously what they have to do is start from scratch. First down stops. Don't let people gash you on first down and then get to the passer when you have to get to the passer. That'll make the secondary better. But I think they've got a need. I don't know if Amos, if there's a concern there. I don't know that.

But adding a veteran player to their secondary to compete in camp, there's no guarantee necessarily that he ends up. making the team, but they did sign him to a one-year deal that is worth up to with incentives $3.8 million. He started 13 games last year in Miami. Anyway, that's the news. Yeah, I think it's a depth move. Yeah, we'll see. Camp will tell whether or not he's still capable of producing something.

He's played a lot of games the last two years. He played 15 games in Buffalo in 2024. He played in 15 games, started 13 last year in Miami. In 2023, he played a lot of games with two different teams, Green Bay and Buffalo. So this isn't a guy that's missed a lot of games over the course of his career. He's made some big plays. You know, he's got 21 career interceptions. You know, that's one of those positions.

We've talked a lot about this position when they've drafted. young players and a guy like Sandra still was good as a rookie, but not as good as in the second year. Amos, there was a lot of thought that he could be great as a rookie. And you know what? He played pretty well as a rookie, but more times than not, this is an acquired knowledge position. It is a hard position to play in the NFL. It's not like running back where you plug and play on the running part, not necessarily the past protection part. Usually, corners don't come into their own until second, third, fourth year. He's a veteran. He's been in the league now 10 years. This will be his 10th year coming up. I like the signing. I don't, you know,

I don't have a real strong feel for what Russell Douglas is now. I know what he used to be. But they're, they're clearly, you know, interested in defense. This was a defense, defense, defense off season, as it turned out. Even though initially we weren't sure it would start that way. But yeah, they got six new starters minimum, probably eight to nine new contributors on defense and a new defensive coordinator. Defense was a major focus. This was Adam Peter's biggest problem coming here and taking over.

What? the so-called Super Bowl roster that Ron Rivera left him was deplete of any talent. Right. Okay. They needed help everywhere. Yeah. And there's no way they could address that in the time that they've had. I mean, that's why we're in the debate now as to Jane Daniels needs more weapons. Because it's clear that they needed to, they needed to make some dramatic, changes on defense too. Yeah. I love you referencing the Ron Rivera Super Bowl roster quote. The quote was, remember,

he did the interview with John Kime before the 2023 season, which was really for all intents and purposes, a lame duck season for him. Right. And, you know, Kime asked him about, you know, whether or not he feels like he needs support from new ownership. And he said, I don't worry about that. If we go eight, eight and one this year and he fires me and next year they win the division and 40 of the 53 players we drafted with 40 of the 53 players we drafted and it's the same quarterback, I'm vindicated. Send me my Super Bowl ring. That's the way I look at it. I want us to be right and to see this community have that excitement again. You know, it's just, it's so, it's such a ridiculous quote looking back on it now. Because the

quarterback that he's talking about is Sam Howell. Sam Howell. Yeah. I think on his third or fourth team as a backup or third stringer. And the players that were significant contributors on the 2024 team were either not on the team or were drafted or acquired before Ron got to Washington in 2020. Players like Doran Payne and Terry McLaurin as examples. Right. Yeah. All right.

You wanted to say something about the Ovechkin being introduced today? Well, the capitals had, you know, they announced, you know, the word came out over the weekend that Ovechkin was coming back for one more year. He was very, well, Elvesque was coming back. He had signed a deal with the caps, a one-year deal. You know, the Caps made a lot of moves last week to really bolster their roster and are considered to Stanley Cup contenders. Are they considered Stanley Cup contenders? I think they are. Really?

I think absolutely they are. I didn't know that. I mean, they added a lot of firepower offensively to their roster. And they had a press conference today, a Zoom press conference with Ovechkin. And this is one of his quotes. When you look at the roster, it's a Stanley Cup contender. It's an interesting part coming up here. I was talking to my family, and she's like, quote,

okay, let's play one more year or maybe two years. His wife said, no. Yes. I can still play and bring energy to the locker room, energy on the ice. So he brought up two more. years, maybe. So I don't think this is going to be a goodbye season for Oveshka. Unless dramatically he gets a storybook ending and walks out, like with as a Stanley Cup champion,

they're not committing to this being his final season, even though they just signed the one-year contract. It's not like he's tripping over his skates out there. No. And it will be interesting to see how he fits in. with the new offensive weapons that they've got. I'd love to see you on skates. I think that what you just said made me think,

man, they're kind of putting some pressure on themselves for the upcoming season. Stanley Cup contenders, Stanley Cup contending team. We've heard a lot of people say they're making all the right moves. They make the playoffs this past season. still have only won one playoff series since 2018. I know.

I know, and we know the playoffs are a crapshoot, but I have to admit, the arena between the arrival of AJ DeBantis, and, you know, maybe a healthy AD and Trey Young and the new Caps, arena's going to be a rock in place next year. It should be. But the caps, the caps, bet, get to the postseason and win a series minimum. Oh, absolutely.

Okay. Absolutely. Minimum. I think they are Stanley Cup contenders in my limited knowledge of the game. I think they've made significant additions. I think they have a very good coach. All right. A.J. DeBonsa, by the way, I think makes his summer league debut Thursday night against Utah.

I think that's what it is. So that means him against Darren Peterson. Darren Peterson actually already made his Summer League debut. And I think he had like 28 points in 27 minutes for Utah. Look, let me just, the Summer League is not an influencer for me. Trust me. I'm just, you know, I'm just giving you the facts of what happened in Darren Peterson's debut in the Summer League. These summer league games are between mostly players who aren't going to be on NBA rosters or if they are, they're not expected to get much playing time except for the very high draft picks.

These summer league games have always been about, like this year, DeBonsa, Peterson, and Boozer, maybe a couple of others. Speaking of the NBA team in Washington and the excitement that will be present at Capitol. 1 Arena. They acquired on Friday D'Andre Aiton for Jaden Hardy, a player that came in that trade for Anthony Davis from Dallas and some second round picks. D'Andre Aiton was the first pick in the draft in 2018. And I remember that summer of Janus winning the title in 2021, Milwaukee against Phoenix, And D'Andre Aiton played during that postseason at a level where people were starting to think, look, this league's going away from traditional, you know, on the block, big men, but this guy's going to keep it alive.

He was incredible during that postseason. But for whatever reason, in watching him over the years, I think everybody's had this same feeling about Aiton at seven feet, 260 pounds. he's got all this ability, but he just doesn't seem ever to, like, be energized. Yeah. He's a dog. He's become that. I mean, he's basically averaged a double, double through his career. Right.

But he's just never been able to kind of realize what people thought he would be, especially that 20-21 season. that postseason for him in 2021. I looked this up earlier. He had a game one of the NBA finals. He had 22 points and 19 rebounds. Game five of the Western Conference finals, he had 23 rebounds and 19 points and four block shots.

Like this guy, when he's been interested, that appears to be what it looks like at times, he's a factor. Look, they, they, they needed big man backup presence. Yes. And they went and got it. So we'll see.

Well, two things. Yeah. They've hired Patrick Ewing. I know. As an assistant coach. Yeah. And hope maybe that will help this guy, you know, energize him on the center. And the other thing is, and I think Quissor's fans should be very concerned about this.

Your big man. at surgery for a broken foot. Yes, Alex Sar. But they're saying that he should be fine by the time training camp begins. That doesn't matter. When you have surgery on foot, big men, alarms should go off. Greg Oden, Bill Walton. The list goes on and on.

Big men with feet that just didn't seem to want to put one step in front of the other, Tommy. Nat's lost two or three against the pirates this weekend. I want to go back to the Friday game, the July 3rd game, because Foster Griffin once again was outstanding. Went five innings allowed just four hits, one earned run. He's got his ERA down to 2.87. I mean, that thing has been dropping like a rock. He didn't.

Did not make he all-star team. You thought he would? I thought he would. That's too bad. Yeah. Yeah, but CJ Abrams is a starter for the National League in the All-Star game. He was voted in a starter, and James Wood is wanted a backup. As he should.
