Starting point is 00:00:02 You don't want it. You don't need it, but you're going to get it anyway. The Kevin Cheon Show. Here's Kevin. Santana Moss will be my guest on the show today. 20 years ago, the Monday Night Miracle, Mark Brunel to Santana twice in the final four minutes to Shock Dallas, 14 to 13. The show's presenting sponsor, Windonation, 866998.
Starting point is 00:00:32 Window Nation.com if you need new windows. Mention my name. I promise you they'll take really good care of you. I've already recorded the conversation with Santana. He's always got a great memory. Really good stories. First time I've heard some of these stories about that particular night 20 years ago. Stay tuned for that.
Starting point is 00:00:55 We'll start with his thoughts on the current team and the first three games of the season, including the win yesterday against the Raiders. A win that was costly. Dan Quinn confirming just a little while ago what others had reported last night. Safety, Will Harris, a broken fibula, he heads to injured reserve. Now, he may not be lost for the entire year, but he's out for a significant amount of time. The team did sign Darnell Savage today. Savage last in Jacksonville.
Starting point is 00:01:33 He got released last week by the Jags. He played for Green Bay five years after being drafted out of Maryland in the 2019 draft. Ten career interceptions, a good player for several of those years in Green Bay before he left via free agency after the 2023 season, signed with Jacksonville. Jacksonville's got a whole new regime, new coaching staff, and they released him. last week. I guess the new staff and Savage, the fit maybe not a good one. You know, Savage was the preferred choice of the front office here in 2019 heading into that draft. I talked about that at the time of the draft. Jay Gruden has subsequently confirmed it. You know, Kyle Smith, Jay Gruden and company, they really liked Savage. They really liked Montez
Starting point is 00:02:27 sweat as well. Savage. would have been the pick at 15 if Snyder hadn't joined the draft party and said no, we're going to take Dwayne Haskins. Of course, they ended up trading back into the first round to get sweat anyway.
Starting point is 00:02:44 Savage went six picks later in the first round of the Packers. Now, as far as other injuries from yesterday's game, you know, that Quinn talked about, first of all, the list is long, right? So,
Starting point is 00:02:59 he mentioned two injuries today and didn't talk about any of the others. He mentioned Will Harris's injury and he also mentioned that Marcus Latimore cleared concussion protocol. So he should be good to go against Atlanta. However, when it came to, you know, Terry, Amos, Noah Brown, John Bates, Percy Butler, and of course Jaden Daniels, he essentially said, you guys have to wait until Wednesday on that. Well, John Kime followed up on Jaden. Here's what the coach said. And then with Jaden, what is the plan this week? Yeah, we're still listening to as day to day. And then as we get into Wednesday, I'll be more qualified to, you know, hit us on what types of practice and what we can hit on to go. So he went through some things today,
Starting point is 00:03:51 some more tomorrow. And that'll lead us up into Wednesday. But when we get together prior to practice, I'll have a better idea for the plan. We've not nailed that down. for the week as yet. Day to day, we'll find out more on Wednesday when they have their first full practice in preparation for the Falcons. Of course, if Jaden practices on Wednesday, then that's a pretty good indication that he's going to play against the Falcons. Quinn handled it today exactly the way I thought he would handle it.
Starting point is 00:04:19 He doesn't have to say much. He can drag this out, making Atlanta prepare for both guys for as long as he can until Jaden is a clear go. And yes, the systems are very similar. The play calling is very similar, but the players have differences and make the opponent prepare for both for as long as you can. I went back and looked at the transcript from a week ago. He basically said he did in that one confirm that it was a knee injury, didn't confirm
Starting point is 00:04:51 that it was a sprain. He didn't talk at all about the nature of the knee injury. He said that he did have an MRI. And then he said, it's day to day and we'll share more when we get to Wednesday and to practice. So it's kind of the same situation as it was a week ago. Last week was more revealing about the knee injury, which we had heard through reports, but we weren't exactly sure until he confirmed that. But that's all he confirmed.
Starting point is 00:05:22 He still, and the team still has not confirmed what the knee injury is. And that leaves us with this at least as a possibility, right? Because there really has been very little reporting on the nature of the knee, a sprain knee. There was a report yesterday, I think, from Jay Glazer that it might be a ligament, a sprained ligament. Nobody is saying that it's a very serious injury. In fact, the ESPN reporting, Kimes reporting and Schefter's reporting from a week ago, was that the MRI did not reveal anything serious. But there was conversation yesterday on pregame shows that, you know,
Starting point is 00:06:04 his straight line is fine, but it's more the lateral stuff. I think I read yesterday on the show the Jeremy Fowler quote. Let me find that for you so I can read that again. Fowler said the following during ESPN's pregame show, quote, Jaden Daniels is out for this week, meaning yesterday, and it really wasn't even close, which begs the question, what is he looking like for week four? So I checked with a source over there who said,
Starting point is 00:06:36 it's just too early to tell on that knee sprain. They want to see how he responds. Closed quote. There's just a lot of unknown. The team has done a great job of keeping it an unknown. The player has. The other players have. The agent has.
Starting point is 00:06:56 any doctor involved has, you know, I think it's probably a range of he's good to go this week to actually that sprained ligament was a little bit more serious than we thought. It's not going to sideline him for a long period of time, but it was a two to three week injury or maybe a two week injury and he misses this week, comes back for the Chargers game. I don't know. If he doesn't play against Atlanta, we will probably get the exact same thing, week from today. But that will be the story, of course,
Starting point is 00:07:32 this week. Again, Jaden Daniels, not just Jaden, but a lot of the injuries that they have. I got this from Jay. Jay writes Kevin, I'm wondering if you thought what I thought
Starting point is 00:07:48 watching the game yesterday, that the team would still be pretty good with Marcus Marioada as the starting quarterback. Not the upside of Jaden, but like you said, this is the best offense he's ever played in. Would they be a playoff team with Marcus starting the rest of the season? Uh, who? Maybe, Jay, but that doesn't mean that I think they're better off with Mario, then Jaden. No one in their right mind would say that, and I know that's not what you're saying. Mariotta was fabulous yesterday. I mean, I had a
Starting point is 00:08:26 as my number one on the list of things that I like from the game and my game take that I did on the post-game pod. If you didn't listen to it, it's there. Just go back to yesterday's show and listen to my 45-minute- or so post-game pod on the game yesterday. I thought he was really good. They truly have one of the best, if not the best, quarterback situations backup-wise in the league because A, he's such a great guy. B, he's not trying to start C. He's the perfect backup because you don't have to change anything. And he's good in this system, really good.
Starting point is 00:09:07 He's played, you know, almost a full game last year against Carolina, a half against the Cowboys. That's kind of a meaningless half, if we're being honest. The Cowboys had nothing to play for in that game. And then he got his first start yesterday. and everything looked great. He looked great physically. Even the play in which he fumbled the football on that read option, I thought he looked so good on that 22-yard run. He was decisive.
Starting point is 00:09:34 The ball was out quickly. He was accurate. You know, like I said, on the post game, 15 of 21, and he had three balls dropped. But, you know, it's interesting, Jay, that you sent me this because I'm going to play this other piece of sound from Dan Quinn's press conference. J.P. Finley asked him about, you know, Marcus Mariotas game yesterday and whether or not Marcus Marioada's play would influence the decision making on Jaden's return. You'll hear J.P.'s actual question and Dan Quinn's answer right here. What, if any, impact does Marcus' play against the Raiders have on Jaden's timeline and the practice plan and everything for Jaden going against Atlanta.
Starting point is 00:10:23 Yeah, I think J.P., you probably heard me talk. I was probably one of the least surprised people in the stadium that he played well. Like, I just see him. I know what he is and how it goes. But as far as tying one to the other, that's not part of the deal. We just have a lot of trust in him and how we'd go about it. But, man, we'll lean into the medical people and where we're at and what to do. but that type of preparation for him,
Starting point is 00:10:47 it's just that kind of steady, consistent way. But they're not tied together to answer your question. But as far as tying one to the other, that's not part of the deal. They're not tied together. Dan Quinn shutting down any thought that they can take their time and they don't need, you know, Jaden to play because they're just fine with Marcus Mariotta. Yeah, they'd be just fine.
Starting point is 00:11:13 with Marcus Mariotta compared to a lot of other situations that they could be in. Good for Adam Peters, good for the franchise going out and getting Marcus Mariotta, and then resigning him after last year. Again, they have a very good quarterback situation. But all due respect to Marcus Mariotta, who played so well and is in a very good system for him, maybe the best of his career. He's not Jaden Daniels. So when Jaden Daniels is 100% healthy, he plays.
Starting point is 00:11:48 You don't have to say, well, we want you to be a hundred and, you know, a little bit more than that. We want to be really sure. We're fine, you know, playing Marcus against Atlanta and against the Chargers. That's not going to happen. If Jaden's not playing, it's because he's not at 100% that he's injured and they're not going to risk it. And look, even if Marcus Mariotta, wasn't that good and didn't perform the way he did yesterday. It would be tough luck for the team,
Starting point is 00:12:22 but they're not rushing Daniels back at this point in the season unless he can play physically. The knee is different, as we said all last week, than the ribs or rib of a year ago. You know, Marcus got really emotional yesterday. You know, his journey, and you'll hear him, mention his journey has included, you know, recent years where he left the Falcons in 2022. Remember that Netflix, the original quarterback on Netflix, you know, the last few episodes, what the hell
Starting point is 00:12:58 happened to Marcus Mariotta? It became all about Patrick Mahomes and Kirk Cousins. Well, he left the team and Arthur Smith. Now, he returned, but there was a lot of stuff going on in his life. He was very upset that he had gotten benched for Desmond Ritter. He had actually played pretty well for the Falcons. Remember, they had that game here in November that kind of came down to the final throw that got tipped and picked off in the end zone. But he then went to Philadelphia where, you know, a post writer who I cannot think who wrote this story.
Starting point is 00:13:32 I don't think it was Nikki. It wasn't Barry. I'm forgetting who wrote the story. And I'm assuming it was the post. It could have been somewhere else. But I'm just going to basically paris. phrase from the story, Marcus Mariotta had some mental health issues in Philadelphia. He had the yips. He didn't think he could throw the football anymore. He had tremendous anxiety around that.
Starting point is 00:14:01 And he thought his career was over. And this place has been heaven for him. This has resuscitated his career. This has made him happy. And so after the game on the field with the sideline reporter, I think her name is Jenny Taft, listen to the back and forth with Mariotta. You'll hear hesitation. He got choked up a little bit after yesterday's game. A commanding win for the commanders in all phases of this football game. Marcus, congratulations. I want to drill down on the ground game, though, total domination, over 200 yards, including 40 from you personally. What was working so well? Well, first of all, God is good.
Starting point is 00:14:45 I just, this means a lot to me, so it was awesome. It was a good group of guys that were dedicated to doing their best and executing, and it was fun to be a part of today. Obviously, it made you a little emotional there. Why? A little bit. just think about my journey. That's about it. You know, the ups and the downs,
Starting point is 00:15:11 and I was a part of a great franchise with the Raiders, and to see some of these guys and to play against them, it was a lot of fun for me. And I'm just a part of such a great culture. And I'll never take that for granted. And I just truly blessed and truly appreciated of it. Marcus Mariotta is a likable guy. He really is, and he loves it here.
Starting point is 00:15:33 This place was very important. in his life when he signed here. The people that are here, the organization, the culture, et cetera. He's been a part of establishing this new culture, but he was not sure when he signed here. And you can see and hear in his voice how meaningful signing with Washington was and how happy he is to be here. But I was thinking about this as I was watching this earlier today for the first time, this interview, this exchange with the reporter from Fox after the game.
Starting point is 00:16:09 You know, he is 31 years old. He turns 32 at the end of next month, October 30th. These are prime years for quarterbacks in 2025. And he is played at a high level in two different situations, the relief appearance against Carolina, but really yesterday more than anything else. Man, he looked good yesterday. Every year in the off-season, you've got a dozen teams minimum looking for a quarterback.
Starting point is 00:16:42 I'm talking about a starting quarterback, certainly eight to ten teams. Anyway, Marcus Mariotta is going to get calls about starting next year somewhere. Now, will it be the same setup is here, the same system, the same personal feel that he has for this place? can it, you know, happen somewhere else, the right fit from a football standpoint? I don't know. But Washington's paying him $8 million for one year to be the backup. Maybe the next three or four years. Marcus Mariotta stays here.
Starting point is 00:17:15 Washington ups the money a little bit each year. And this is where he's happiest. He's happiest backing up, you know, a young superstar quarterback, mentoring and growing, helping this young quarterback grow. maybe he views this as his professional calling at this point. But I bet you he gets some opportunities to start when this season is over, even if he doesn't play in another game this year. Just a reminder, my game take, the follow-up to the Raiders game,
Starting point is 00:17:49 it's available yesterday's podcast. I don't have a lot of updates, honestly, from where I was. you know, other than to say, and I haven't gone back and watched the game again, but just going through some of my notes, what I missed in the immediate aftermath of the game, I raved about him on yesterday's show, but I thought Dorrance Armstrong was just so good in this game. I mentioned Payne was good, Wagner was good. I really like Dorrance Armstrong. I think his versatility, his pass rush ability, Washington does not have one,
Starting point is 00:18:26 single, you know, dominant pass rusher. It's what they're really missing more than anything else. The quarterback along with a dominant pass rusher, and, you know, you chalk them up right away as, yeah, Super Bowl contender, legitimate. But I love the way Armstrong rushes the passer. Look, I like the way Wagner and Louvo get after it, you know, on Blitzes, you know, Von Miller had a good rush. I think Duran, you know, he's had three games and two of them have been really. really good. He was so disruptive yesterday. But Armstrong to me is just so impressive. And the other thought I had was just the running back by committee. I like them doing it this way. I'm fine with them doing it this way. If there's one Rodriguez or Bill or maybe, maybe Jeremy McNichols, if one really
Starting point is 00:19:20 emerges as sort of a cut above the rest, fine. But for now, you know, they're such, they're all different. So preparing for all of these different running backs, especially with all of the formations that Cliff runs out of. You know, I was watching some of the highlights of the game again, and I mentioned the diamond formation that I like a lot. In some of those diamond formations, they basically have three running backs. I mean, Debo's the third. And no, tight ends. And then they had two running backs in some of those alignments with two tight ends, including Trent Scott. Scott played about a third of the snaps as that sixth offensive lineman, eligible offensive lineman. But I like the running back situation. I don't think they're
Starting point is 00:20:08 missing Brian Robinson Jr. right now. I do think Echler will be missed. I still do. Echler was, and he was very dynamic as a pass catcher. He really was great at making people miss. But I like Rodriguez. I've always liked Rodriguez. I do like Crosky Merritt's talent. Nichols, you know, I mean, that play I've now watched a few times. Jeremy Chin is the first guy that he runs over.
Starting point is 00:20:36 He broke four or five tackles on that run. I like that situation. I think that's fine. You know, you don't have to have a lead back. You know, it'd be nice to have Sequin Barclay. It'd be nice to have Bejohn Robinson. It'd be nice to have, you know, some of these truly, you know, top tier backs. But with the way Cliff, you know, runs, you know, has the offense designed and play calls,
Starting point is 00:21:07 you need a couple of them. And they're in there together on occasion. Really interesting watching them yesterday, you know, all sort of divvy it up. I thought Rodriguez was good. I thought McNichols was good. I thought Kroski Merritt was good. I thought Debo was really good in the game as well. Debo as a runner, excellent.
Starting point is 00:21:31 He had that drop in the game. That, you know, you downgrade him a little bit, which is why I didn't have them on my list of things that I liked. but he was awfully close to being on there. But Dorrance Armstrong kind of talked about this over the summer. Man, he's played well this year. All right, let's get to Santana Moss next after these words from a few of our sponsors. Starting point is 00:25:33 Passes port for a touchdown by Santana Maas, and the Washington Redskins finally get into the end zone in 2000. and five. From the 30. Brunel going deep for Morse. And he made a touchdown. Wow. And again, it's Glenn and Williams on the coverage.
Starting point is 00:25:57 He beats the same two guys. Unbelievable. He just outran him. And Mark Brunel got it out there. Brunel to Santana Moss twice in the final four minutes of the game 20 years ago, almost to the day. a game that we have referred to over the years as the Monday Night Miracle, one of the most memorable Redskins Cowboys game in their storied history. Joining me right now was the recipient of those two Mark Brunel passes, Santana Moss.
Starting point is 00:26:34 And before we started to record this segment of the show, I asked you, do you know what this weekend was in terms of a 20-year anniversary? and you didn't know. Yeah. Yeah, I had no clue. So, I mean, but just you asking me kind of gave me that kind of, maybe it's something dealing with me.
Starting point is 00:26:53 So I just luckily, you know, said that date. So no one else has reached out to you to talk about 20 years ago. No one else, but I promise you this. By the time I go in to do my shows tomorrow, we'll probably be talking about it this for the rest of the week. Well, it was a crazy night. We will revisit that.
Starting point is 00:27:14 that night in a few minutes with Santana. But let's talk about the team. So three games into the season, for someone who hasn't seen a game, if they asked you, what's the team look like so far? How would you describe the team through three games? Well, to be honest with you,
Starting point is 00:27:34 I think when you kind of compared to last year how fast things started and how it ended, you would hope that they would just pick up where they left off. but with so many different guys, new guys on the team, and just trying to get familiar with some of these new bodies and different guys in different positions. They look like a team that I expected them to look like last year. I see a lot of potential.
Starting point is 00:27:57 I see a lot of great play, but I haven't seen the best for them yet. So I would probably say that, hey, I see a team that can be pretty good, but I haven't seen their best game yet. Yeah, I think that's totally fair. The one good team they played, they were dominant, by. That was a bit disappointing, and the two lesser teams they've played, they've beaten. Is there an area of the team so far that has surprised you, either in a positive way or in a negative way? I think the area that has surprised me a little bit is the guys up front on the
Starting point is 00:28:35 defensive side of the ball. We know we kind of made an emphasis about, you know, being able to stop the run, you did this offseason. And also, with the guys, that being said, get out to the passer. And I think up to this point with three games, even though you can kind of say it wasn't Peaches and Cream that Thursday night, but still, I think there still have been getting out to the quarterback and stopping a run at a great rate. So I would say that area has surprised me thus far. Let's start there, because I kind of agree with you.
Starting point is 00:29:06 I think the biggest mystery heading into this year was, you know, did they improve defensively? and it does look like they've got better players up front for sure. We'll talk about the injuries to the secondary and how that may impact that. But who's been most impressive defensively to you through these first three games? Well, you can easily sit out there and say Ken Law and guys like pain. But I think to me it's Armstrong. It's great to see that within three games, he's already have three sacks. And we kind of figured that one of those guys in the inside will kind of
Starting point is 00:29:42 cause a little more attention to get some of the other guys free. So to see Armstrong sacking the quarterback at the rate he's at, man, that gives you high hope that he can have one of those, you know, double-digit sack years, and that can just unlock a lot of other things that we could probably do up front. Bobby Wagner continues to do it, you know, here at age, you know, 35. I mean, the game yesterday, the pressures, the sacks. Is there anything about his game that at 35 years old concerns you?
Starting point is 00:30:12 Not at all, man. I think when I look at a Bobby Wagner, he reminds me of those guys back in the day that I used to watch all those, I guess you can say, linebacker, middle linebackers that led their teams to postseason runs. And the guys that stands out to me, you know, and these guys, Wagner might be better than a lot of these guys. But when you had the Cox's back in the days, the Marvin Jones back in the days. I'm going deep until, you know, back in the day when I was young watching these guys, like that what Wagner brings to this defense. He has that leadership and he has that
Starting point is 00:30:46 style of play to where he sets the tone for the defense. And when you have a guy like that, that's basically your quarterback on defense that's leading everybody, putting everybody into place and putting getting everybody into the right position to make plays, it's a huge momentum. It's a huge advantage for those guys on the defense to fly around without having to really think about itself.
Starting point is 00:31:08 Secondary-wise, Will Harris looks like he's going to be out for a while. You know, Marshawn Lattimore was concussed. Trey Amos got hurt yesterday. They're banged up in a lot of spots. They lost Jonathan Jones
Starting point is 00:31:21 last Thursday night against Green Bay. But just give me your sense of the secondary through three games and then, you know, what you think the challenges are here moving forward without for sure, Will Harris.
Starting point is 00:31:36 Yeah, I'm just hoping, man, that we can have that we have enough depth there that we can get, guys to step into those positions and kind of, you know, not see too much of a drop-off. It's a big blow to lose will because I already felt like, you know, it was a blow for us to lose chin, you know, not bring him back. So now to have the guy who replaced chin to kind of go down, you know, that's not, that's not good.
Starting point is 00:32:01 But like I said before, when you have the kind of pressure that we're putting on, you know, the quarterback, you hope that the guys up front can handle some of that stuff and speed the quarterback's up that we have to play. coming up soon so we don't see that big of a drop off in our secondary play. One of the things I always mention about this game, man, and the reason why I always say that you can't really look at one year like the other because you have to be lucky. And when I say lucky is having great health. And when you see now already within three games, we have a lot of guys that's catching
Starting point is 00:32:32 that bug. That's not a good sign, man, but I'm going to just keep putting them prayers up because I understand how it goes. And that's the reason why we play the game. that's the reason why you have guys, you know, on the bench and guys on your practice squad. So if this opportunity opens, you have to come out there and show them what you're worth this. Let's flip it to the other side of the ball.
Starting point is 00:32:51 How impressed have you been with Debo through three games? D'Bow has been Debo, man. I'm not, I can't say I'm just solely impressed with him. I'm more impressed with just his special teams, you know, I guess you can say. Kick-off returns. Yeah, the kick-return that he's been doing that. My dad's been more impressive than just seeing him catch the ball and do what he does as a ball carrier.
Starting point is 00:33:15 I think Debo has been the baller. You know, last year, you have years that he had last year. Sometimes it just doesn't, you know, work out for you. And then he had some other things going on outside of football that he had to deal with last year. So I'm happy he was able to come here. You know, we had him on one of my shows last week. I'm happy he's able to come here and kind of just get a fresh start
Starting point is 00:33:35 and, man, and really show these guys, man, who's Debo? Who's, you know, what Debo is about. So I can't be more than happy for him because just knowing that we had Terry coming in late, not having him in the preseason, you know, somebody needs to carry that load. And I think DeBo has been doing a tremendous job of doing so. You know, the other receivers, no Noah Brown yesterday. You had, you know, you had Terry out there. He actually injured a quad.
Starting point is 00:34:00 We don't know how serious it is as you and I are recording this right now. Chris Moore played a bunch. He had that really good catch in the opener. Luke McCaffrey had his first time. touchdown catch. Tell me just your overall feelings about the receiver group. And, you know, like how would you sort of put them in order of how you'd have them out there snap count-wise? Well, I mean, you know, of course you're going to have Debo.
Starting point is 00:34:28 And Terry. And then when Noah's healthy, Noah, I think that's our best three. Yeah. When you kind of look at the big scale of everybody. But also I would think that, you know, with Lane coming up, I think eventually we're going to have to use what he has. You know, he has the speed, the stretch to field, and I think I can see more opportunities coming in him. You get a guy like McCaffrey and more as a veteran, so I'm very pleased with the opportunities that he's gotten up to this point. He's making them count, you know, catching the ball.
Starting point is 00:34:58 That's huge for us and that's huge for him because that's the way he can stay on the field and be able to, you know, feeling the boy if somebody goes down like a Noah Brown or like a. Terry if we need him to feel that voice. But to me, I feel like, you know, it's just like the guys that we had last year, all these guys are capable. And we have a couple of guys on scout team, you know, Brooks. I think highly of Brooks.
Starting point is 00:35:18 I think he's a young guy that, you know, with a little more practice on his belt. And if we have to throw him out there, I think he can get the job done to him be one of those guys that we can, you know, call on because he showed us in this preseason that he's a guy that can make plays when the ball's given to him properly.
Starting point is 00:35:33 So I like them all, but I'm not going to sit out here and say, one is better than the other. I just feel like we have a bunch of capable guys, and when you have a passer like JD or even Marioota, you know, all you got to get guys the ball when they're open, and the rest is up to them. All right.
Starting point is 00:35:50 Let's talk about Marcus Marioada's relief appearance yesterday. Tell me about his performance yesterday. He's phenomenal. I had a lot of, I guess you can say, confidence, and I'm just seeing what he did last year in this offense. I think when you really look at guys, in today's game when they have this backup role
Starting point is 00:36:10 as a quarterback, you have to think in the back of your head that we may have to call on those guys because if you see how so many quarterbacks have gone down already earlier this season. So I'm pleased to know that we have a guy that's a veteran that can run this offense like Mariotta does so well. But I think he had
Starting point is 00:36:26 a phenomenal game, and I even seen a little old Oregon Marioita and when he had that one fumble, he jumped over a guy and I was like, oh man, I mean, that play was so crucial, man. but I know he wants it back. But I just love the fact that we can lean on a man in a crucial time like yesterday,
Starting point is 00:36:42 and he went out there and played phenomenal. Yeah, I said last night after the game, I think that Cliff Kingsbury and this offense is the best he's been in as a pro. Yeah. Yeah, me too. I really do. I see him tap back into some of the things that he did well in college.
Starting point is 00:37:01 So when you see a quarterback that comfortable and that confident, you know he loves what he's out there doing. Do you have a sense, anything about Jaden and his knee injury? Do you have any kind of hunch on when he'll be back? Do you think it'll be Sunday in Atlanta? I have no clue. You know, they don't give us those. I know.
Starting point is 00:37:21 I see him when he's out there. When everybody else gets the news, I'll get the news, you know? You know, you know this. I mean, and I've said this many times on the air. It's like, you know, for all of those years with Snyder and Vinny and everybody else, It was like they fought each other to see who could leak the information first. And now you can't get anything from anybody out there. I actually like it like this.
Starting point is 00:37:46 Me too. As a player, as a player, I hated hearing some news that we knew that and got out of the building. Right, right. And by the way, how many times would you hear news that you'd be like, no, that's not exactly the way it is? No, trust me. All the time. Yeah. All right.
Starting point is 00:38:03 So I am so blown away with Jalen Lane's talent as a punt returner. You were one. I thought if you had done it full time, we'd be talking about you as one of the best returners in the history of the game. So what do you see in Jalen Lane as a punt returner? Oh, he's fearless for one, and he's fast. And I think that's what you need to have to play that position. You know, at so many years we get guys, and we're like, oh, he's going to be our punt return.
Starting point is 00:38:34 So you get your hopes high, and then by week five, that guy on drop too many, or he just haven't made the right play, you know, for him to sustain that job. And to see Jalen, you know, being brought in here as a punt returner slash wire receiver and excelling at it, you know, within three games already in his rookie year, man. It's a tremendous job by him. it's a tremendous job by the scouts who scouted him and AP of getting them in the draft. And I just think the world of them, man. I'm happy to see him having success, but I'm also happy to see our special teams as a whole
Starting point is 00:39:08 knowing what they have back there and those guys out there flying around making blocks from. But I'm curious. I mean, is my reaction and overreaction through three games? Like when I watch him, I see a guy like you said, he's fearless. He catches the ball, which is rather important in that position. and then he really sees everything and is super decisive and then he's got the game breaking speed. Look, I remember you as a punt returner.
Starting point is 00:39:35 You got north-south. You saw kind of the landscape. You had the great vision. You had the wiggle to make somebody initially miss and then it was boom. I mean, like that's what it looks like to me, but you're the expert here. Yeah, no, he has everything that you just,
Starting point is 00:39:55 spoke on. And that's what I see, you know, initially after every chance I get to kind of like watch him back there, I almost think the first thing I'm doing is acting as if I'm him. So I sit up there in that suite and I count his steps. I count how far he's from the guys from the guy who's hiking the ball and then I count, you know, how far the guys are from him when the ball is in the air. And I'm calling it in my head like, you got action, you got action, you got room, meaning he has room to catch the ball and run. And it's like every time he gets it, he has a chance to making that first guy miss
Starting point is 00:40:28 and picking up at least 20 yards, 10 to 20 yards. And yesterday, I promise you, I'm not lying. When he caught the one that he ran back, the first thing I said, he made him go on this one. And when he hit it, the way he's supposed to hit it, I just say he's gone because I know he has to break away speed
Starting point is 00:40:44 and he made that initial guy missed in that little lane that he had. And it was counseled Christmas after that, man. So he has all that. All that. And we all see it. Me and B. Min's talk about it every week, how pleased we are to see him back there
Starting point is 00:40:59 because we knew watching them in college that he had that same ability, and you don't see a drop-off. You need most guys you get out of college. You know, it takes them a while to kind of catch on to what they did, especially on that level. He came in out the gate, ready to do what he's doing.
Starting point is 00:41:15 And I'm so pleased, man, because I know we have the, we need guys like that to be able to step in and make those kind of plays for us. You know, the punt that Jalen Lane returned for a touchdown yesterday was one of those booming, you know, punts that kind of traveled, you know, far beyond where maybe the coverage unit was expecting it to land. Those are the ones that have the best chance for big returns, right? Yeah. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:41:41 I mean, you're right on it because when you outkick your coverage, that's what we want. You know, I hate the short ones, but I also like the short ones because, you know, if you're a guy who has. quick instincts and you can catch the ball and make a guy miss right now and get north and south, then that suits you. But the ones that they outkick the coverage, I always 100% love them because now you've got guys that's giving you so much opportunity to either stretch the field or get north and south right now. It's almost a disadvantage for them.
Starting point is 00:42:11 So you hit a bit on the head with that. All right. Let's take a quick break, and when we come back, we'll go back 20 years ago to the Monday night miracle and get Santana's recollection. of that incredible comeback win. Starting point is 00:45:33 All right, let's go back 20 years ago. Week 2, Dallas on Monday Night Football. Remember the opener that year that this was Joe Gibbs' second season. This was your first season in Washington. We had the Laverneus Cole season, and then, you know, he didn't want to be here. And Clinton takes credit for the trade that brought you here. You know, it was a low-scoring, defensive game in the opener against the Bears. Ramsey, you know, went out.
Starting point is 00:46:06 Brunel came in. I think Gibbs wanted to, I think he wanted Brunel from the beginning. Do you remember it that way? Do you remember kind of Joe wanting, you know, a reason to put Brunel in the game? I had no clue. Remember, I was fresh. I was like a fish out of water. I had no, I had no clue what was going on around me. Right. Okay. So we get to Dallas. You guys haven't scored a touchdown in the first seven quarters of the season, even though you beat the Bears, it was three field goals. And you're getting beat 13-0. And Santana, I swear to you, as a fan watching this game, you know, most people, except for the die-hards, turn this thing off. It was an ugly game.
Starting point is 00:46:49 We couldn't score. Dallas was up 13-0-0. You know, what are your memories of that night before, before lightning struck in the final four minutes of the game? Just what you said, man, it was an ugly game. That's why I won the reasons why it took me so long to say this was one of my favorite games. And I had to be reminded by the fan base that, hey, this is what happens when we play Dallas.
Starting point is 00:47:19 This is why this game is so special. So, you know, being a guy that had already played four years in New York, and this was my first time being a part of this rivalry, I had no clue why the game was so special to this fan base. So it took me a while. But after I made those two scores, you know, and probably some weeks later, I had no clue, man, but I'm glad that I was a part of that,
Starting point is 00:47:41 and I'm glad I was the guy that did it because that was like my introduction. And I was like, here you go. You know, that was like my welcome to D.C. moment. And I couldn't be more thankful. It was a fourth and 15 with just under four minutes to go down 13 to nothing when Mark Brunel through the first touchdown passed to you. Fourth and 15. You guys on that drive had overcome a third and 27. Brunel ran and on fourth and two, he found James Thrash for a completion.
Starting point is 00:48:11 It's fourth and 15. still seems like there's no prayer. What do you remember about that first touchdown? Well, the first touchdown came. I was on the sideline kind of powen, and CP came over to me, like, asking me, you know, what's wrong? And, you know, no, that's how we do. When the game is about over, we kind of start getting our mindset for the flight
Starting point is 00:48:32 and what we got to do next week. And C.P., like, what's wrong, bro? And I'm like, what you mean? What's wrong, you know? And that's, like, my first initial thought to him, and that's what came out. And I'm like, bro, I ran all these plays on Friday that I told them that I liked, you know, that I want to run against Aaron Glenn. Aaron Glenn was a teammate of mine with the Jets, and I thought the world of them.
Starting point is 00:48:52 And to be honest with you, Aaron Glenn was the reason that I was, I thought that my game was where it was at, because he kind of followed me around my rookie season and practice like, hey, I'm going to get you right, and you're going to get me right. And so I thought the world of Aaron Glenn. But I remember watching him go up against Marvin Harrison and all these other guys in our division in the LFC. So I gave Coach all these plays like, Coach, I want to run this. I can run every route that I'm giving you and more. But I like these routes against Aaron Glenn. And we get to that point of the game, and I had ran one yet.
Starting point is 00:49:25 And I also probably only have one or two catches in that game. So when I tell CP that, you know, I'm pissed off that I didn't get a chance to do all these routes that we practice that Friday. CP comes back with Coach Gibbs. And Coach Gibbs first initial word to me was like, hey, you want to run Dino? and I'm like, I look at the clock and I'm like, sure, coach, I'll run Dino. Like, I didn't want to give him my, you know what the kids, but I was pissed off. So I'm like, yeah, coach, of course I want to run Dino. And that's all I remember.
Starting point is 00:49:52 I remember him saying, okay, we're going to do it if we get the ball back. And that was the first route. That was the first touchdown. And after that, it was like, oh, man, I guess he looked at it. It was like, this is why this guy pissed off. He knows he can do this. And then I come back to the sideline and he tells me great job. But we get the ball back.
Starting point is 00:50:10 be going at them again. Rest with history. So I'm learning something here for the first time, and I think a lot of people are learning it for the first time, too. Clinton, who takes credit for bringing you to Washington, to going to Gibbs and saying, well, let's just go get Santana. You know, if Laverneus Goals wants out of here, we'll go get Sanana Moss.
Starting point is 00:50:33 So that trade happens, and you're telling me, in one of the most memorable Redskins Cowboys' games of all time. The game is over. You're over there. They haven't run the play that you, first of all, let me back up. Do you typically, would you typically on a Thursday or a Friday, go to the coach, go to the O.C, and say, hey, these are the ones I like? Man, you know what? To be honest with you, that was my first experience of really being there kind of, I guess you can say, quote-unquote, go-to guy. That they asked, they started asking me, do I like these routes? And that was kind of like alarming to me as a guy like,
Starting point is 00:51:15 you know, where I just came from, they care that's what I like. But they gave me, you know, the ball whenever the ball come and, you know, and I'm being the guy who I was, you know, I made the play. So when I got that kind of rapport with them out of that first, after that first week, I just, you know, that week leading them into that game, you know, they asked me, hey, what route do you like? And I just say, hey, here's the list of rounds I want. know what I mean? And so that's what I had with that particular coaching staff. And it worked tremendously for me because if you saw that year, it's one of my best years. And I was mad that after that season that we didn't have that same report because it's like now we get a different
Starting point is 00:51:54 offense in the next year and they don't ask me those questions no more. You know, the other thing Clinton for that season takes credit for, and I think you've confirmed this with me before, is that Joe and Company wanted in Vinny, they wanted to take Kellyn Winslow, and Clinton... Yeah, Clinton said, you should take Sean Taylor, and Gibbs said, well, we really want offense, and Clinton said, well, if you want offense, take Sean Taylor.
Starting point is 00:52:25 That was his answer. Like, if you want the football and you want, then take Sean Taylor. And, of course, that was Sean Taylor's rookie season. I kid you not, for the fans that know, I kid you not for the fans that know all the other stuff that Clinton was about with the, you know, the little funny, um, um, costumes and stuff or that nature and just the way he did things. Yeah. Clinton had a way about going and talking to. And what I say, adults, I always feel like I look at my coaches as, like that's like that's like your mom and your dad. Like, you, you don't go to talk to them like you would talk to your, your friends or your siblings.
Starting point is 00:53:03 Right. But Clinton had a way of talking to the ownership, to the head coach, better than any other player I ever been around. He always got his way with them. So, yes, I hate to say it, but he was a guy that could go talk to anybody and tell you what he thought or what he felt should happen. By the way, it didn't really work with Jim Zorn, though, did it? Not at all. I think, and much as I like his, Jim, Clinton didn't like Zorn and what he's saying. same I liked them and I think it rubbed him wrong that Clinton was one of those guys that
Starting point is 00:53:38 was just say what was on his mind. Right. All right. So the first one on fourth and 15 makes it 13 to 7. We get the ball back under three to go, just about two and a half minutes to go at your own 30, first and 10. And so the play call comes in again and it's the same play? So it's not the same play. It's still a post. But this time it's just a B-line post. And he was like, it was crazy because I remember that play when we called the second one, they lined me up on the left side of the field. And I'm not sure if we brought the play in Rome or it was just, you know, missed, you know,
Starting point is 00:54:20 said out the huddle. So we called a time out, if I'm not mistaken. And then we changed. We flipped to the right side because coach wanted to make sure I got on that side with Roy Williams and Aaron Glenn. And when I got on that side, I just looked at the coverage, and I'm like, wow, this guy, Roy Williams is still sitting, sitting, he's not high enough. He's sitting and squatting at, I'm thinking, almost 16 to 20 yards deep, and I'm watching where him and Aaron kind of was kind of shating each other. And I'm like, this is cover four again. They're sitting in cover four.
Starting point is 00:54:56 Roy is playing for something underneath. So I kind of made my route, instead of running a regular post attacking Aaron, I kind of attacked in the middle between both of them. So when I put that foot in the ground, when I take my initial two steps towards that post, I should be able to get behind Roy a little quicker. And, man, thank God that you got an old veteran, you know, that just know how to throw the ball. Mark Bownell threw the ball before I put my foot in the ground.
Starting point is 00:55:24 And when I looked up, by the time I looked up, the ball was already coming down. Yeah, and it's such a, it's kind of an over-the-shoulder catch on that one. It was perfectly thrown, right? Yeah, perfectly thrown. And I'm watching the play right now. Brunel's got time. He steps up in the pocket, and there it is. And when it lands in your hands, I mean, it was like, you know, sports are so great,
Starting point is 00:55:49 because, you know, when you least expect it, you know, expect it, but it's still shocking. That is truly one of the more shocking, couple of minutes of football for this franchise I have ever watched. It's not over yet. You're 14, 13, but tell me after you go into the end zone, you're coming back to the sideline. What went on at that point? Gibbs is like, what took me so long? Everybody was just ecstatic, man. They was looking at me like, oh, you know what? This is what we got in this guy with number 89 on it. It was crazy to see the reaction from my teammates because all of them have respect of you from wherever they've seen you play at from your
Starting point is 00:56:33 you days from my get days of the jets and even with some of the things that i was doing up to that point but the playmaking when you're making plays like that and crucial moments of games you kind of get a different look from your teammates you get a different stare like that almost like oh he's that guy and you can see that from everybody like their eyes was big they was they was hitting me so hard on my head and i'm just one of those nonchalant guys and like, man, you know, I was happy, but I was still at the same point, like, damn, we waited all the time to do this. Right. And CP and Sean was the guys that I really, you know, you know, we just had a way of connecting and speaking to each other without even saying anything.
Starting point is 00:57:14 And when CP hit me, like, I told him, and then Sean came to me and said, I'm going to get this ball back. And that's when I knew, like, okay, you know, we got that same kind of swag that we had at UM. You know, even though Sean didn't play with me and CP, we speak the same language. And Sean kind of took that as not my time to go out here and make a play so I can make sure that these guys don't score this next time out. Yeah, remember he blew up Patrick Creighton over the middle and got the stop. You know, I'm looking at the play-by-play of the game. This part, I guess, I don't remember. You guys actually got the ball back after Sean crushed Patrick Creighton, and then Walt Harris had a big play on Terry.
Starting point is 00:57:55 Glenn. And you got the ball back. They had timeouts left and Clinton ran three times and then you guys punted and they had one last opportunity but with no timeouts left and deep in their own territory and the rest is history. So, you know, over the years, like, you mentioned, like you didn't know what Dallas, Washington meant going in. You were new. Clearly, what has that game meant to you, you know, over the last 20 years.
Starting point is 00:58:30 Are you kidding me? It meant my whole career. Honestly, like, I don't know of it. It was like something that ignited my performances for the future with those guys. But it seemed like every Dallas game, no matter what coaching staff was here, if they wasn't giving me the ball the way I wanted the game before or the week before, they found a way to involve me. in the game plan come Dallas week. So it was just like one of those things where sometimes as a player I get mad thinking about it like, you mean to tell me we're going to wait the Dallas week to get me off
Starting point is 00:59:06 instead of just giving me the ball every week like this. But it meant the world to me, man. I think when you look back at my career here, what better way to start your career here, you know, your career here, you know, with this franchise and to have that kind of effect against that team, but also have that effect that I had with, you know, fan base knowing that you can count on 89.
Starting point is 00:59:28 And it wasn't something that just happened when I played Dallas, but they knew that when we played those guys, it was going to probably, you know, my play was going to rise because the coach and staff was going to make sure they found a way to get me the ball. I'll tell you what, seriously, it's one of those nights as a fan of this team. Like, I remember exactly where I was. I remember exactly. Never thought about turning the game off. I was never one of those people that gave up, you know.
Starting point is 00:59:55 All right, 13-0, it's two scores. It didn't seem very likely. But, like, it was one of those games when it was over. It was so thrilling. It was, like, almost impossible to go to sleep. It was actually my first year, second year in radio, and I was doing this kind of post-post-game of the Skins games for 980. But because it was a Monday night game,
Starting point is 01:00:22 they didn't have the post-post-game show on. So I was home watching the game, and I'll never forget it. You know, you had so many memorable games, but nothing compares to that. Like, I do think of that Jacksonville catch in overtime that you took. You know, the big catch from Jason, who threw that ball to you to beat the Saints, you know, that year. But, you know, I'm looking at that season, you know, which ended up being a playoff season, as we know. The next three games after that Dallas game, you got targeted 12, 13, and 14. times. So it was a bit different after that game.
Starting point is 01:01:00 Yeah. It was a huge difference, man. And that's why I say as a player, you don't kind of, you're in the moment, so you're not really thinking about it until you think about it. And when I reflect all the time, I'm like, wow, that season, I was at, I was tearing it up when it comes to a hundred yard games like no other season in my career because now this new team that I'm on is like, feed 89 to ball, feed whatever you do, feed 89 the ball, But not just feed me the ball. It was Mark Runeal most of the time because Mark was a guy, even when I wasn't in the progression, he would come find me. And he would tell me, 89.
Starting point is 01:01:36 Leaving the huddle, I love the fact of playing with older quarterbacks because it's the same thing that I had against what I had with. I mean, Vinnie Testiverty in New York. Yeah. When I would leave the huddle, after making a couple of plays with these guys, they would just know to say, hey, stay with me backside. I might come to you. So when you have that kind of confidence in your player as a quarterback, I can just imagine what they were going through when they say, hey, man, when in doubt I'm throwing to the guy who's going to get me,
Starting point is 01:02:06 who's going to catch this ball and do something with it. And that's what Mark and Benny would do with me. So I remember that year, man, Mark just, I would be backside. Even against that 2006 game when we played Jacksonville, that play I ran early in the first half. Mark asked me early in the first half, where you open? I said, of course. But the coverage was kind of like, man, that time.
Starting point is 01:02:29 The second time he threw it to me that I scored on it, I wasn't open. But Mark just knew, man, Tanna's going to go up and try to make an attempt for his balls. I'm going to throw it to him. So it's one of those things, man, when the quarterback feels you're going to make him right, he's going to always find you. Santana Moss, everybody. What a career here in Washington. He went into the ring of fame just a few weeks ago during the opener against the Giants.
Starting point is 01:02:53 a welcome entrant into that ring of fame and deserving as well. Santana Moss, third on the reception list franchise all time behind two Hall of Famers and Art Monk and Charlie Taylor. Reception Yards, he is fourth all time trailing Monk, Taylor, and Gary Clark. You know, I've referenced this list of, you know, the really good receivers in franchise history of which you are one of them a lot over the last, you know, few months. months during the Terry McLauran contract, you know, discussions, these Terry's, you know, moving up quickly on this list.
Starting point is 01:03:31 But what a player, what a career here, and what a memory you provided, truly one of the most memorable, you know, regular season games in franchise history. I really appreciate you doing this. Hope you're well, and let's talk soon. No doubt, man. You know, one of the things about me when it comes to all that, you don't, I don't play the game for it. And I feel that that's the mindset we're supposed to have. But you hear a lot of guys that think differently. They're like, look, I play for the Pro Bowes. I play for the Hall of Fame.
Starting point is 01:04:03 I played because I was gifted enough to play this game. And I was also, it was a privilege to me to play. But at the same time, you go out there and say, I just want to be able to hold myself accountable and make sure my teammates know that when in doubt this guy who's out here, you know, making these plays are going to be somebody that we can always trust in. So to have that career, to have the accolades afterwards, man. It's always a blessing. But, you know, I just enjoy knowing that I had that effect, and I was a guy that the fan base look at the way they look at now.
Starting point is 01:04:34 Well, and for those of us that just know you even a little bit, you've been a total class act since the moment you arrived 20 years ago, and I think people appreciate that about you as well. Hope you're well. We'll do this again soon. always man thank you Santana moss everybody one of my favorite
Starting point is 01:04:57 former players of this franchise he's always been incredibly willing to come on and gracious and always a great storyteller with a great memory how about some of those stories about the Monday Night miracle you know sitting there over on the sideline
Starting point is 01:05:12 they hadn't called the plays that he had told them that he thought they could use that he was comfortable with and Clinton Portis comes to the rescue again Clinton was responsible for Sean Taylor's selection. Clinton was responsible for Santana Moss being traded here. And Clinton, we just learned for the first time, was responsible for Gibbs
Starting point is 01:05:34 dialing up those two bombs to Santana Moss at the end of that game. All right, let's finish up with what turned out to be a record-setting day in the NFL. I'll explain after these words from a few of our sponsors. Cardi. Has it blocked again? This time, Jordan Davis, the big man, looks for the icing on one big cake. Eagles hang on. Insane ending at the Lincoln, Philadelphia, yesterday. Jordan Davis blocking Joshua Cardi's last second field goal and then rumbling down the center of the field, 61 yards for a touchdown. The Eagles were down 19 in the third quarter and scored the game's final 26 points, including that touchdown to beat L.A. 33 to 26. What a football game. That was, what a 1 o'clock window
Starting point is 01:06:41 yesterday with two other games having significant blocked field goals in them as well. I'll get to those here momentarily and tell you about the NFL record. that was set yesterday in week three. This segment of the show is brought to you by, my good friends at My Booky. Washington, by the way, two and a half point favorites in Atlanta. The total is 44.5. That's the highest total of the year. For all your sports betting, My Booky is the place to go.
Starting point is 01:08:38 They'll take really good care of you. Again, go to the Kevin Sheeonshow.com slash my bookie and type in DC Reload. So yesterday's games were amazing. Let me just mention this, all right? There were seven games yesterday decided with a game-winning score in the final three minutes of regulation that ties for the most ever in a single NFL week dating back to the merger in 1970, according to Elias Sports Bureau. That record could fall tonight in Baltimore if we get a game-winning score in the final three minutes of
Starting point is 01:09:16 or in overtime. You heard the Philadelphia ending. The blocked field goal was a major part of this record-tying day in the NFL. How about what happened in Cleveland? The Browns and the Packers, this was a defensive tussle. These may be the two best defensive teams in the league. And Cleveland might be the best defensive team in the league. The Browns were down 10-0.
Starting point is 01:09:45 They came back to tie it at 10 apiece, and then Green Bay got into field goal range. And with 27 seconds to go, McManus lined up to boot what could have been the go ahead, maybe even the game-winning field goal until this happened. On the right hash, Daniel wheel on the hold, the kick is blocked. It is blocked. The Browns get the SWAT and turn the Packers away. The Browns took over at their own 47, and a couple of plays later, they executed about as well as you can execute with no timeouts. A pass over the middle.
Starting point is 01:10:27 They got to the line of scrimmage in a matter of about four or five seconds. They were able to spike it and kick a 55-yard field goal to shock the Packers 13 to 10. And then in Tampa, the bucks were up 26 to 20 on the Jets. This was a big play for me because the Jets were one of my smell test picks getting seven. Chase McLaughlin lining up to kick what would have been a field goal to give Tampa a nine-point lead. And then this happened. McLaughlin has been perfect today. The goal, Texas blocked, scooped up, and will be taken all the way for a Jets touchdown.
Starting point is 01:11:16 Will McDonald? returns it into the end zone, and we are tied at 26. The Jets converted the extra point to take the lead 27 to 26, but Baker Mayfield did it again, driving the Buccaneers down the field. This time, Chase McLaughlin hit a field goal from 36 yards out to win the game, 29 to 27. By the way, Tampa Bay now the first team in the Super Bowl. era to record a game-winning score in the final minute of the fourth quarter in each of its
Starting point is 01:11:54 first three games of a season. Baker Mayfield has been unbelievable as they have won in Atlanta and against Houston last Monday night and now against the Jets in the final few seconds of the game. The bucks are three and oh. Just a great day. of NFL football. You had the walk-off field goal in San Francisco. They beat the Cardinals 16 to 15. The Chargers tied it on an incredible pass from Justin Herbert to Keenan Allen. Then they got the ball back and kicked a game-winning field goal at the gun to win that one, 23 to 20. Aaron Rogers threw a late fourth quarter touchdown pass to beat the Patriots, 21 to 14. Just great football games all day. long. We may have another one tonight. By the way, major injury news, you know, out of the NFL. Yesterday, first of all, James Connor running back Arizona, he's been such a big part of what they've
Starting point is 01:13:02 been offensively. He is done for the year. Nick Bosa in San Francisco, same game, torn ACL done. That's the second time Bosa has torn his ACL in the last five seasons. Man, the 40s, Niners cannot stay healthy. CD Lamb and the Cowboys' loss at Chicago, three to four weeks with a high ankle sprain. By the way, Brian Dable just said moments ago in his Monday press conference that he's not ruling out a change at quarterback. Russell Wilson last night was horrendous.
Starting point is 01:13:40 I mean, through two terrible interceptions at the very end of the game, you'll see throws that you'll never see made. He threw one into the tunnel in a first and goal situation, got called for grounding, and then on the next three plays, basically threw it to nobody. He could have been called for grounding on another two plays, as the Giants were trying to get a backdoor cover, which they were not able to succeed doing. Russell Wilson, okay, in three games this year. Opened at Washington, right, was horrendous, 29.8, Q,
Starting point is 01:14:15 Terrible game. Then last week he has a career game, yardage-wise, to beat the Cowboys. How bad is the Dallas defense that Russell Wilson threw for $4.50 against it? And then last night, a 6.5 QBR and a 22-9 loss to the Chiefs. It sounds like change might be coming in New York. How about the defensive performance? of maybe all time where Isaiah Rogers in Minnesota, their corner, had a fumble return for a touchdown, had a pick six in the game as well. I read this, I think late last night on Twitter, that Isaiah Rogers' performance yesterday was the highest graded defensive performance ever by pro football focus.
Starting point is 01:15:10 They destroyed the Bengals 48 to 10 with Carson Wentz at quarterback. He didn't have to do much. He was 14 of 20 for 173 yards, two touchdowns, no picks. He was sacked three times, shocker. Had a 34.7 QBR, so it wasn't a great overall game for Wentz. But Jordan Mason rushed the ball really well, went for seven and a half yards per carry. And the Vikings beat Jake Browning and the Bengals, 48 to 10. What a shame with Cincinnati.
Starting point is 01:15:42 They finally get off to a good start. No Joe Burrow in their season. will probably wither away, although who the hell knows in the NFL. The Colts are 3 and O, and how about this about them? One punt for the Colts in their first three games. One punt, the fewest since 1940 in the NFL over the first three weeks of the season. Daniel Jones and the Indianapolis Colts have punted once. They're plus 47 point differential, the best in the league.
Starting point is 01:16:20 They are one of six remaining undefeated teams, the others being the Bills, the Chargers, the Eagles, the Buccaneers, and the 49ers. I don't know what we know after three weeks. I'd like to think that we know that Buffalo is a really good team, that Philadelphia is a really good team. I think Green Bay is a really good team despite their loss to the Browns yesterday. I don't know what to make of Tampa at this point. They've won three games in the final, you know, a few seconds. I don't know what to make of the Chargers, although they've got three wins against division opponents. The Chiefs, Raiders, and Broncos were their first
Starting point is 01:17:00 three games. Now they get two against the NFC East, the Giants this week, and then our team on October 5th. But I think, you know, in another three or four weeks, we'll start to, you know, at least identify the leadership. legitimate contenders and the legitimate awful teams. Of course, going into yesterday, I would have told you the Panthers aren't very good. The Browns are really good defensively, but, you know, I'm not sure they're going to beat anybody good. Although I got to tell you, the smell test, by the way, seven, six, and two for the weekend going back to Thursday night. So that is four straight winning weekends to open up the season.
Starting point is 01:17:46 I know that that is not necessarily a money winning weekend, but record-wise it was. And we're up, you know, we're up nine units for the year. Yeah, nine units for the year. Had a couple of games yesterday that I was really, really ticked at myself for not giving out. But there really wasn't overwhelming public action. But I thought there would be on Green Bay. I played the Browns personally, and I thought the same about the Panthers.
Starting point is 01:18:18 Now, I also thought the same about Houston, because I could have given them out. That would have been a loser. And the same with, there was another one that I liked. Oh, yeah, the Patriots were all close to smell test picks. But anyway, exciting NFL Sunday, big game tonight. I want to finish up the show with this. Maryland got a big win Saturday at Wisconsin. They beat the Badgers 27 to 10.
Starting point is 01:18:50 It was a one-sided game from the beginning. Terps got some big plays on special teams. The freshman quarterback hit some big throws. Their defense was outstanding in the game. Look, Wisconsin's not very good. That was evident watching this football game. Not a good team. quarterback issues. Billy Edwards, the former Terp, took about two snaps and left the game.
Starting point is 01:19:16 It's just not a good team. Luke Fickle is struggling in Madison right now as their head coach. With that said, this is a signature win for Mike Loxley to go on the road against a program that's got some prestige and to win a Big Ten game on the road to get to four and O. The Terps got votes in the polls this week. I don't know how good they are. They're four and O. They beat Florida Atlantic, Northern Illinois, and Towson before beating Wisconsin. I gave out Wisconsin. I thought Wisconsin was going to blow Maryland out. I really did on Saturday. I was very glad that I was wrong. To be honest with you, I don't think it was the best Malik Washington has looked, although he made some big time throws, including a bomb
Starting point is 01:20:09 towards the end of the game that gave him a 27 to 3 lead, a 62-yard or two knots. Maryland's defense, I think, might be legit. Their linebackers are good. This guy, Wingate is good. Reddick is good. And then the other player that I was so impressed with. Sydney Stewart number 29 is good. They have a lot of freshmen on this football team.
Starting point is 01:20:37 They are young. I don't know what this season will amount to. I think now it's going to amount to a bowl trip at the very least. They can certainly get two more wins. They're off this coming week. Then they get Washington, who is undefeated, although they play at home this coming weekend against number one Ohio State. But I was really happy for the Terps,
Starting point is 01:20:59 happy for locks. One of those wins that he hasn't been able to get and he got it. I don't think Wisconsin's very good. I think that will prove out over the course of the season, but so be it. The Terps beat a team that they were better than,
Starting point is 01:21:15 a lot better than. I did not know that going into the game. 27 to 10 was the final. Maryland does not have Ohio State or Penn State on the schedule this year. They've got an easy Big Ten schedule for the most part. They play Washington and Nebraska. They're next to at home. Then they're at UCLA. The Bruins are terrible.
Starting point is 01:21:35 Then they have to host Indiana. Indiana beat Illinois 63 to 10, probably the most impressive win of the weekend in college football. They also have to go on the road to play Illinois. They have Michigan late in the year, but that game is a home game. You know, there aren't games at this point you look at and say, yeah, no, they can't win that game. That's a loss. Like typically Ohio State, Penn State, Michigan, you know, are. Michigan's okay. They're not great. I'm not saying that Maryland's better, but this isn't a dominant Michigan team. Illinois is okay, but they just got run 63 to 10. Indiana is probably legit. I think Nebraska is pretty good, too. They get the corn huskers in college park. And maybe Washington will come in here and thump Maryland.
Starting point is 01:22:26 Maryland in two weeks. Their wins and their three and no start have been unimpressive. Colorado State, UC Davis, and the Apple Cup win against Washington State on Saturday, 59 to 24. But Washington State lost the previous week to North Texas, 59 to 10. It's just nice that this Maryland season, unlike last year, is off to a start in which, okay, we can pay attention here and hope the Terps can you know, get another one. Imagine Washington knocks off Ohio State in Seattle and they come into College Park 4-0 against the 4-0 Terps in two weeks.
Starting point is 01:23:08 I don't think they're beating Ohio State. Who knows? The big game, this is going to be one of the best Saturdays upcoming that we've seen in a long, long time. You've got Ohio State at Washington, but you've got LSU Ole Miss, you've got Oregon Penn State, Alabama, Georgia. Unbelievable Saturday's slate. Virginia won a game, one again. I gave them out. They crushed Stanford. They host Florida State on Friday night. Florida State is just a six and a half point favorite. I'm pretty sure I'm going to be giving out the Cavs, the Wahoos on Friday night
Starting point is 01:23:49 against Florida State. Virginia's good. They can really score. That is a big game for Virginia. Florida State thinks they are headed towards ACC contention. I think they're going to have a really tough game in Charlottesville on Friday night. All right, that is it for the day. I will leave you with the Monday Night Miracle, but the final call after the final play attached to it, you didn't hear that at the beginning of the Santana Moss conversation. All right, back tomorrow with Tommy. Brunel hanging in. Go in deep, and it passes caught for a touchdown by Santana Moss,
Starting point is 01:24:31 and the Washington Redskins finally get into the end zone in 2005. From the 30, Brunel going deep for Morris and getting next down. Wow. And again, it's Glenn and Williams, on the coverage he beats the same two guys unbelievable he just outran him and mark brunel got it out there i'll tell you we have seen some improbably wins to these years this was only a 13-0-0 game but this would rank right up there in terms of improbability and for jerry jones and for bill parcels that's about as bitter as it gets
