Starting point is 00:00:02 You don't want it. You don't need it. But you're going to get it anyway. The Kevin Sheehan Show. Here's Kevin. So usually when I get back from some time off, some vacation time, I will say on this show or even on the radio show, I'm really glad to be back. I couldn't wait to get back. This time, I would have been okay with a few more days in Italy.
Starting point is 00:00:28 Just being honest. The show's presenting sponsor is always. Window Nation, 86690 Nation, or WindowNation.com if you need new windows. I am back just in time for one of, if not the, biggest trades of a defensive player in NFL history. The breaking news earlier this afternoon, two-time defensive player of the year, Miles Garrett traded from Cleveland to the Rams. for Jared Verse, a first rounder, a second rounder, and a third rounder. Jared Verse, a two-time Pro Bowler in just two seasons in L.A. So that gets treated almost as if it is a first-round pick,
Starting point is 00:01:16 even better than a first-round pick, because Jared Verse is an ascending star pass-rusher in the NFL. That may be the priciest deal in NFL. for a defensive player. A little bit later on in the show, I'll do some historical comparisons to the trade made today. Look, the Rams simply put, they rarely consider the future.
Starting point is 00:01:42 Future seasons to them are never as important as the upcoming season. And for them, the upcoming season begins in Melbourne, Australia. On the first Thursday night of week one, the Rams have gone from what was a slight favorite to win the Super Bowl to now a pretty sizable favorite to win the Super Bowl post Miles Garrett trade. I'll have a lot more on this trade coming up again later on in the show. So some of you sent me some really good suggestions before I left for Italy. I was in Milan for three days. I was in Lake Como for five days.
Starting point is 00:02:28 I've been to Italy a few times, but this was my first time ever in Lake Como. And as many of you had tweeted or emailed me to say, you're going to love Lake Como. You were right. That place almost looks AI generated. It's that beautiful. And we had a great time.
Starting point is 00:02:50 It was eight of us on the trip. My wife and I, along with our three sons and their three girlfriends. I thought it was a bit ambitious heading into it for that long with that group, especially knowing the group as well as I do. I said to my wife before we left, this does have the potential to be explosive, but it really was tame by comparison to what usually starts with sports. moves to music, then to politics, and if things get really bad to religion.
Starting point is 00:03:30 But all of the conversations, all of the arguments were actually pleasant and did not become disruptive. It was a great trip. Funny about longer trips for me, I don't know if it's the same for you guys. We don't take a lot of long trips. My wife works. I work. It's kind of hard to get away for as long.
Starting point is 00:03:53 as we just got away for. I mean, we had the benefit of having a holiday weekend as part of the getaway. But usually for me, after like day three or four, I'm ready to go home. I really am ready to go home. It's not that I'm a creature of routine or a creature of habit. I just like to be back. Well, I like what I do. I mean, so it's not really like a job that you can really disenfranchise.
Starting point is 00:04:23 dislike or be thrilled to be away from. I like doing what I do. But I felt like this trip and the reason I said that I could have used a few more days is it was just long enough where you start to actually relax and get settled. That doesn't always seem to happen for me. I don't know about you guys on vacations. But this one lasted just long enough where by the time we got to Saturday, I guess, I was like, man, I could do a few more days here. It's too bad we got to go home in a few days. Anyway, what did I miss while I was gone? I followed and even stayed up until ungodly hours,
Starting point is 00:05:07 Italy time, to watch the OKC San Antonio series. I was up for the entirety of games five and seven. The games started just after 2 a.m. Lake Como time, ended Game 7 did almost at 5 a.m. I watched all of it. I'll share my thoughts on that series in particular coming up in the next segment. The Nats, how about the Nats in the unexpected season they are having? They took two of three from the Padres over the weekend and are now two games above 500 at 31 and 29 through 60 games of this 2026. MLB season. I'm going to save some of the Nats talk for Tommy tomorrow, but your Washington Nationals are a game out of the third National League wild card spot. And they're actually
Starting point is 00:06:07 just two games behind the team with the number one wild card spot. That team would be the team they just beat two out of three times the San Diego. Padres. But what a nice surprise. and perhaps setting up for, at the very least, a much more interesting summer than we've had the last five or six summers with this baseball team. James Wood's 16th home run of the season yesterday. He is tied for second in homers in the National League. So I did miss doing shows during last week's first round of OTAs. and I got a lot of feedback from all of you. This from Glenn, Glenn writes,
Starting point is 00:06:56 Kevin really missed you this week, he meant last week. Seems like every move Adam Peters made in the off season is paying off. Now just one IUC or digs domino to fall and look out. Thank you for that, Glenn. From Terry D. Terry D. Kevin, I know you don't think much of OTAs. But no, I don't.
Starting point is 00:07:21 But all the talk last week was really positive. Chig, as in Chigakanco, looked sharp. Diami picked up the chemistry with Jaden from where he left it off in the playoff game against Detroit. Terry, as in Terry McClorn, he's in early and that's already paying off for Terry McClorn. And the best news yet, Stiles and Williams, as in Antonio. Williams, their third round pick, are ready to play at a high level right now. I don't think you'll need time to grade this last draft, Sheehan. I hope you've been following along and will weigh in.
Starting point is 00:08:06 Paying off was kind of a theme of those two emails. Glenn wrote, Adam Peters is making this off season payoff. Terry D. talking about Terry McClure in early. already paying off. Yeah. So of course, most of you know who have listened to me over the years where I'm about to go on these two emails. And by the way, there were more than just Glenn and Terry who seemed to be super pumped up based on, I don't even know how you would quantify results of OTA week. but I guess there were, per usual, a lot of people play by playing the OTA week, and that got some of our fans and some of the listeners to this show pretty excited.
Starting point is 00:08:58 Look, for all of you that, honestly, that bought into anything that came out of OTAs last week, I'm not going to be able to convince you that it's basically useless what, you know, came out of OTAs last week. from our perspective. Like I've said before, I don't begrudge anybody and any of my friends in media who are out there play-by-playing, you know, OTA days,
Starting point is 00:09:26 training camp days. There's clearly, you know, at least somewhat of an audience for it. Glenn and Terry are proof of that. But just understand that, you know, the only thing for us to take away from this time of year, like post-schedule release,
Starting point is 00:09:46 through the opener is injuries, you know, that's real. Trades are real, like the one that happened today. Summer roster ads or deletes, both of which could be coming at some point for this football team. But other than those things and the occasional piece of information that you either get publicly, you know, from a coach or a player, or get in other ways, it's all make-believe people. I mean, you're not, this has nothing to do with anything. Like, Antonio Williams might be really good and might be ready to do it as a rookie. But you don't know that because of OTA results. Again, I don't even know how to measure results.
Starting point is 00:10:35 Nobody knows for sure. They don't even know. Occasionally with rookies, they'll have a sense of. something. And Jay Gruden's told us before, they knew, you know, right from the jump, rookie minicamp that Terry McCorn was much more than they had drafted. You know, the guy that they had drafted, they thought was going to be an outstanding special teamer, and they realized early on that it was much more than that. But think about that particular offseason. You know who knew about it? They did. You know who didn't know about it? We didn't know about it. We
Starting point is 00:11:09 didn't know anything about Terry McClorn until the opener in Philadelphia that particular season. They kept it sort of under wraps and they didn't play them much, but they don't play many people, period, when it comes to preseason games. The offseason activities of Adam Peters can't possibly pay off, Glenn, until the team plays games. They didn't play any last week. They didn't even fake like they were playing games last week. And they won't until September. My favorite one from Terry's email is the part about Diami Brown. Let me read this again.
Starting point is 00:11:54 It's just so good and so annually predictable. I feel like I've had this conversation with some of you every single time that OTAs begin. It's like this time every year. for the last 15 years. Sometimes we do it two to three times before the regular season begins. But when Terry D writes, Diami picked up the chemistry with Jaden from where he left it off in the playoff game against Detroit. Oh my God. In reading that again out loud, actually, I'm thinking to myself, Terry's, he's playing with me, right? No way someone actually believes that. Let me just read his entire email again.
Starting point is 00:12:41 Terry D. Kevin, I know you don't think much of OTAs, but all the talk last week was really positive. Chig, as in Chigakon Quo, look sharp. Diami picked up the chemistry with Jaden from where he left it off in the playoff game against Detroit. Terry in early, as in McLorn, is already paying off. And the best news yet, Stiles and Williams are ready to play at a high level right now. She and I don't think you'll need time to grade this last draft.
Starting point is 00:13:11 I hope you've been following along and we'll weigh in. I am weighing in, Terry, and you're pranking me. You're trolling me, as the kids say. And if you're not, I promise you, I promise you that, A, I couldn't care less about all the talk last week, being positive about OTAs. remember when I forget which defense this was, but they gave themselves during OTAs in early training camp days the title of capital defense, and they ended up being the worst defense in the league. You know, I think about all the different players, the Antonio Gandy Goldens and the Thaddeus Mosses and, you know, the Jimmy, oh God, Morlins that were, you know, going to be great players based on. their rookie mini camp. And I mean, look, some of you and some of my colleagues may be right,
Starting point is 00:14:11 but it's not because of what is happening right now. It's not. I don't read any of it. I don't follow it. If I had been here last week, what I would have done is the same thing I do every year during OTAs and we'll do again this week, you know, unless there's major news. I'll listen to, you know, the coaches and the players press conference. conferences. You know, Jaden, by the way, I watched all of the press conferences. I did watch,
Starting point is 00:14:40 you know, Quinn last week, Jaden last week. Kinlaw was the best. Kinlaw, by the way, he might be coming up with the team nickname like the 85, you know, Bears defense equivalent, you know, whatever the nickname for the next great defense in the league is going to be. He might actually drop it on us before the season begins. But his little four minute, five minute, presser was outstanding. But, you know, I watched Jaden's eight minutes and, you know, it's kind of a snoozer, to be honest with you, the only thing about Jaden that is always interesting to me, and the one observation I'll make about his press conference. First of all, he usually doesn't have much to say. But I thought even in not having a lot to say, he looked and sounded more
Starting point is 00:15:32 grown up, like he's starting to feel more comfortable in those situations. Who cares? What matters is what he does on the field. Kinlaw was by far in a way the only entertainment, in my opinion from last week. If you didn't hear Javon Kinlaw, it was like three and a half, four minutes long. I'm going to cut some of it up right now and play it for you. There was this one section of his conference that was heavy on expletives. And it will be, I guess I'll keep them in just so you get the effect. But he was asked about his teammates. I think it was from Scott Abraham.
Starting point is 00:16:17 But you'll hear it right now. And there were a couple of other good parts too. Let me see if I can cut those up and play those for you as well. But here was the expletive laced portion of it. So there is, you know, a warning here for those that, don't want to hear expletives, but it was by far and away the most entertaining of any of the pressers from last week. Here was Javon Kinlaw. What do you think about the new pieces they added defensively, you know, on the D-line?
Starting point is 00:16:47 Yeah, we got some. Several guys. Yeah, we got some motherfuckers now. Excuse my language, but, yeah, shit, O'A, he can go. She'll Charles a many of you who can go. She'll take Levin can go. She'll tell him. He can go.
Starting point is 00:17:01 Who else am I missing? Then we got shit these wires back shit, you already know he can go, shit we got D.A. coming back, he can go. Shit, jerseon can go.
Starting point is 00:17:09 I mean, shit, D. Payne can go. You know, it's going to be exciting, bro. It's going to be super exciting to play with these guys for sure. A lot of talent,
Starting point is 00:17:18 bro. I'm just excited, bro. I'm super excited. Excuse his language. Javan Kinlaw. We've got some MFers now. Then he says, excuse my language,
Starting point is 00:17:29 before he then uses the S word. as a comma between listing every single one of his stupendous defensive teammates in late May after one of the worst defensive seasons in NFL history. But most of the players he mentioned were new, and he said they can all go. I mean, O'Way, he can go. Charles O'Menehue, he can go, chase on can go, settle can go. Who else am I missing, you said?
Starting point is 00:17:58 We got Dietrich Wise back. You already know he can go. We got DA as in Armstrong coming back. He can go. Jersan can go. Is in Newton. And then he finished with D. Payne can go. To which I got this text from our good friend Steve Suter.
Starting point is 00:18:17 He texted me the link to Kinlau's little mini press conference. And he said, funny, he mentions pain last. If you tuned in for Steve Souter's film breakdowns last year, He was not a big fan of the season that Duran Payne had. He does not think that Duran Payne gives maximum effort on every play. And yeah, he didn't get to Payne until the very end. By the way, Suter said to me, I watched some Tim Settle highlights from last year. He could be a sleeper signing.
Starting point is 00:18:54 So he likes Tim Settle. There was something else that Kinlaw said that I haven't mentioned yet. yet about last week's OTAs, but it was, I think, a positive for this team. But he was asked about the importance of having everybody there. Yes, every single player on the roster showed up for OTA days last week. And that includes Laramie Tunsell, who did not post for OTAs last year and was not expected to post this year, but did. So that was a bit of a surprise.
Starting point is 00:19:29 Here was Kinlaw, though, on the importance of everybody showing up for these voluntary off-season team activities. Well, this is where it's all about. You know, that's why I'm glad we got all the guys here. OTAs, this is this where you started off, man. This is where you lay the brick. You know what I'm saying? In the house, you've got to have a strong foundation, and this is the foundation right now, and we're building that up, man. So I'm happy about that, bro.
Starting point is 00:19:52 You bring up a good point because this is voluntary, right? But everybody's here. Exactly. What does that show you? Exactly. People want it. That's what it's about, though. Some of the best teams I've been around, it's been a full house.
Starting point is 00:20:03 It's the same way here, like, for sure. Javon Kinlaw, I think the best of all of the sound last week. And when I got back into the country earlier today and came into my studio, that was the first thing I did is just go back and watch on the Commander's YouTube channel some of the press conferences, some of the big ones from last week. But Kinlau's was certainly entertaining. They do have more OTA days scheduled for this week. I know I don't have to say this to the large majority of you,
Starting point is 00:20:36 but for some of you, don't take it so literally what you're reading, what you're hearing, or any video glimpse you get of anything that's happening at OTAs. By the way, as I've been recording here, this opening segment, I have just seen pop up in front of me, another big NFL trade. This one expected. More on that and the Miles Garrett trade after I get to some NBA playoffs in the next segment. We'll do that after these words from a few of our sponsors. Hey guys, it's great to have Quince back as a sponsor of the podcast this week. I'm a big fan of Quince. You guys know that I just got back from Europe, took a vacation with the family to Italy.

Starting point is 00:24:45 Fox has it ahead to the cell who goes in for the dunk. And the senator. There will be a new. champion in the NBA. A new era has dawned. It's Wembe's West. The Spurs are going to the NBA final. I was dead wrong. I didn't think anybody could beat the Thunder four out of seven, but San Antonio did it. 111 to 103 was the final. As you heard Mike Torrico call the final moments of Saturday night's game seven road win for the spurs. Wemby was great. So was Shea Gilgis, in the loss.
Starting point is 00:25:26 This segment of the show is brought to you by Window Nation. Hot summer days and the DMV are never fun, but they're also expensive when your air conditioner needs to stay on for you to stay cool. Older windows are the likely problem. My friends at Window Nation can fix that problem with their June, buy-for, get-for free sale. Out with the old windows, in with the new, and you'll only pay for half of those new efficient windows.
Starting point is 00:25:54 add to that no down payment, no monthly payments, and no interest for two years if you choose to finance the purchase. I've been with Wind Donation now for 18 years. I promise you if you give them a chance, it'll pay off. It starts with an in-home estimate free of charge, no obligation, no pressure. They'll schedule it for you when it's convenient for you. Call them at 86690 Nation or go to Wind Donation to schedule that free in-home estimate. Window Nation, 86690 Nation, a proud partner of the Wounded Warrior Project. So the NBA playoffs are the one thing that I really did stay on top of during my vacation. Now, I did not stay up and watch the Knicks polish off the gutless calves.
Starting point is 00:26:43 I didn't watch any of their games, and I think two of them were already played before I left. The other two I had no interest in. I knew the calves had no chance. They just have zero heart. But I did Italy time, stay up and watch, start to finish, games 3, 5, and 7 of the Spurs Thunder series. The first two games were games that I talked about before I left on vacation. Games 4 and 6 were blowouts, so I turned them off with plenty of time left. But games 3, 5, and 7, I was up until, you know, between 4.30 and 5 a.m.
Starting point is 00:27:22 local time watching these games. My wife was not thrilled about that part of the vacation, but I thought this series was riveting. I really did, and I know none of the games were as good as game one, the double overtime win for the Spurs, where Wembe went for 41 and 24, but the intensity start to finish in these games, the physical nature of these games, I just thought was absolutely thrilling from, you know, a sports drama standpoint. I'll start with this. Wembe's great. I mean, he's all the things everybody has said about him. He truly is a unicorn, an alien, whatever you want to use word-wise to describe him. We really haven't seen anything quite like him. Also, he is one emotional athlete. I can't get over how emotional he was after the game on Saturday night. We
Starting point is 00:28:22 almost uncontrollably. I know there's been a lot of talk about how emotional he is and you see it in his play. He loses his cool quite a lot, and he did during the playoffs in multiple occurrences. He plays so hard, he's so competitive, and in that series, because of the incredible physical nature of that particular, you know, each and every game, and with him being the target, of Oklahoma City's defensive attack. I get that at the end of a series like that one, it probably felt like the culmination of something. It probably felt like, you know, they won the championship,
Starting point is 00:29:05 but they didn't, not yet. You know, they got to the finals. They're in the finals, but they still have to win four more for the rings to get sized up. I thought that was a real interesting part of the entire, you know, Western Conference Finals, the Spurs journey to the NBA finals, watching Wembe, watching kind of, you know, the sports world become aware of just how different he is, because I don't think a lot of people pay attention during the regular season,
Starting point is 00:29:37 and this is the first playoff trip for Wemby Spurs. But God, he is incredibly emotional as a player. The Spurs deserved it, and yes, there are legitimate questions as to the impact. of no Jalen Williams for the Thunder in this series. Also, no A.J. Mitchell for the last few games. No doubt the Spurs benefited from the Oklahoma City injuries, but O.K.C. won three games in this series without Jalen Williams. And they were home on Saturday night in front of a phenomenal crowd,
Starting point is 00:30:12 and they were favored to win game seven. They were a three and a half point favorite. And remember this about Oklahoma City the last two years, and I've been a part of this in saying there is deep as any team in the league and really I don't think anybody's been as deep as they've been the last two years. Well, the irony of that is
Starting point is 00:30:32 the deepest team in the league didn't get it done, didn't overcome a couple of injuries, and they ended up being a team reduced to just one player on Saturday night. And that one player, Shee Gilgis Alexander, the MVP of the league, He did everything he could, but he got no help.
Starting point is 00:30:53 Literally zero help, especially from Chet Holmgren. And I will get to him in a moment. Wembe, however, did get help, lots of it. And that's how you win, you know, a long NBA series. It's too hard for one person to do it by himself over seven games. And Wembe didn't have to do it by himself. I mean, Dylan Harper, my God, as a rookie, big time. Stefan Castle, what I think a revelation in terms of just the badass competitive nature of his game?
Starting point is 00:31:28 I thought Darren Fox was sensational on Saturday night and a huge reason the Spurs won that game. Kelton Johnson, best sixth man in the league, was incredible. Champani, you know, the Spurs got 22 and 7 from Wembe Nama, but six others scored in double figures Saturday night. he got help. SGA didn't. And SGA and the loss, man, I think he earned a lot of respect and a lot of fans because the talk of him being the flopper, you know, during this series, there was no flopping in game seven on Saturday night.
Starting point is 00:32:09 He wasn't getting bailed out by those calls on Saturday night. He had no help in that game. The spurs knew it. They went after him with double teams consistently, and yet he still got 35 points on better than 50% shooting from the field. And some of the shots he hit were so difficult. Nothing was easy. But unlike one of his teammates, he went out emptying the holster. And you cannot say that about Chet Holmgren.
Starting point is 00:32:39 So for those of you not in the know, Chet Holmgren perhaps, you know, just had the the most feeble big game performance by a supposed star of all time. Chet Holmgren is 7 foot one. He was an all-N-Ba third teamer this year. His $239 million contract extension is about to kick in in 2026, 27. Holmgren in a seventh and deciding game with one of his key teammates, teammates in Jalen Williams out, Ched Holmgren scored four points and grabbed four rebounds.
Starting point is 00:33:19 Four and four was his final stat line. The four points came on one of two from the floor. One of two. He attempted two shots for the game. Now, technically he attempted another shot and got fouled and went to the free throw line. but one of two from the floor, four points, four rebounds in 33 minutes. It's not that he was in foul trouble and sat for much of the night. He played 33 minutes and his final stat line, one of two from the floor, four points, four rebounds.
Starting point is 00:34:00 The two total shots from the floor is the real indictment. And also the real reflection of what happened to him, he was scared. I mean, you don't see that a lot. You know, you see players kind of whimper and kind of step aside. This guy was frightened in game seven. It was total mental midget night for Holmgren against Wembeyanama. It was that for much of the series, but then he literally went MIA on the floor in game seven. He didn't want any part of the basketball when it hit his hands.
Starting point is 00:34:38 It will legitimately go down as one of the weakest game seven performances by a capable player of all time. You know, Chad Holmgren is a great example of why it's so tricky when you watch the NBA to declare anything about NBA players or teams during the regular season. The playoffs are completely different, and Holmgren was exposed. Now, he can come back from it. He's young, but a lot of talk today since Saturday night, really, that the thunder may try to ship him to Milwaukee for Janus. We'll see. I still see Oklahoma City as currently constructed as a threat to win the championship next year and the years that they are constructed this way, even with the Spurs in the West.
Starting point is 00:35:30 But it won't be easy because the Spurs are tops in the West for now, and their tops, in the West with a 20, 21, and 22-year-old for the most part as their best players, Harper, Castle, and Wembe. One more thing about Saturday night's seventh and deciding game. I thought this was interesting. It was the third time in five game sevens this postseason that the road team won. Philly beat Boston on the road in a game seven in the first round. Second round, Cleveland beat Detroit in a game seven.
Starting point is 00:36:12 And then on Saturday night, San Antonio went on the road in one game seven in Oklahoma City. But how about this? What we've seen so far this postseason is part of a recent trend. If you go back to prior to the 2016 NBA finals, prior to the NBA finals, prior to the NBA's 2016 finals. Road teams in game sevens in the history of the NBA playoffs were 24 and 1001. 24 wins, 101 losses in game seven playoff games since the league formed until the 2016 NBA finals when Cleveland completed the 3-1 comeback and beat Golden State on the road in game. seven since that win. Road teams in the NBA playoffs over the last 10 years are now 17 and 14.
Starting point is 00:37:11 They've won 17 and they've lost 14 from 24 and 101 to a winning record 17 and 14 in game sevens for the road team. I don't have a good answer as to why something would flip that dramatically over the last 10 years. I think everybody's answer would be, well, of course, it's the three-point shot. Well, I mean, you know, throughout the 2000s, we've had the three-pointer. I know it's proliferated, you know, since Steph, et cetera. And that was, you know, leading up to that run for the Warriors for sure. But I think it's an odd turnaround on something that used to be really hard to do,
Starting point is 00:37:55 which is win on the road in a game seven. Now it's more of the norm. By the way, those numbers since 2016, I excluded the 2020 bubble games. There were lower-seated teams that did win some game sevens, but they weren't true, you know, road environments. So, congrats to the Spurs. What a story it will be to get Wemby into the finals. And, of course, to have the Knicks in the finals,
Starting point is 00:38:25 this promises to be a very highly, I would think. rated NBA matchup. The Knicks have now won 11 games in a row in this postseason by an average of nearly 24 points per game. I mean, this is an unbelievable run that they are on. I mean, let's be fair about their Eastern Conference finals opponent, the Cleveland Cavaliers. The Cavs did go back-to-back game sevens in their first and second round, so they were a little bit more tired. than the Knicks were. But that's not the real reason they lost. They lost because, A, the Knicks are an excellent basketball team playing incredibly well right now. But the Cavs have James Harden. And I've been saying this for years now. Any team that's got James Harden on it and considers Hardin
Starting point is 00:39:18 to be one of their top two players, they'll never win an NBA championship. Once again, this Hall of Fame regular season player completely laid an egg. in the postseason and in the biggest games of the postseason, a dud in a close-out game four in which they were truly gutless in their performance. I mean, they were done before it ever started. He was two for eight from the floor, 0 for six from behind the arc, five turnovers. That was his 33rd career playoff game with more turnovers than field goals made. So can the Knicks beat the spurs? I don't think so. But in saying that, I'm saying that a team that hasn't lost a playoff game in over two months now, the Knicks,
Starting point is 00:40:08 that when they take the floor on Wednesday night, I'm saying they have no chance, despite the fact that they haven't lost a playoff game in 41 days when that ball gets tipped on Wednesday night. Their last loss came on April 23rd in game three of their first round matchup against the Hawks. They lost 109-108. C.J. McCollum was phenomenal in that game. They are 12 and 2 now in the playoffs, the Nixar. And both losses are by one point each to Atlanta in the first round. My bookie currently has San Antonio as a minus 204 favorite to win the NBA title.
Starting point is 00:40:51 They are five-point favorites in game one at home on Wednesday night. If you want to bet the NBA finals, my bookie is the place to do it. It's not only the place to do it because they've got so much, they've got the game, they've got the total, they've got money lines, they've got so many prop bet opportunities for not only each game, but the series as a whole. We'll do that after these words from a few of our sponsors.
Starting point is 00:42:05 Two massive NFL trades on this June 1st. The June 1st date is significant. More on that in the moment. But of the two trades, one was expected, one not so much. And we've talked about already on this show, the unexpected trading of Miles Garrett from Cleveland to the Rams for a compensation package. that may end up being the most expensive for a defensive player in NFL history, or certainly in modern NFL history. That trade happened earlier today in the last hour and a half, A.J. Brown dealt as expected from Philly to New England. What do the Eagles get back for A.J. Brown?
Starting point is 00:42:54 A first rounder and a fifth rounder. However, the first round pick that the Patriot. are sending back to the Eagles is a 2028 first round picks. So not next year's draft, but the 2028 draft is the draft that the Patriots will give up a first rounder for A.J. Brown. Many people will say about future picks, you basically have about a one round discount early in the draft. So meaning a first rounder in 2028 is more like a second rounder in 2020. Not to mention the 2027 draft is at least the way it's being talked about now, and nobody really knows, but it is being discussed as a very deep draft, unlike the one we just had a month and a half ago, or just over a month ago.
Starting point is 00:43:49 So A.J. Brown goes to New England. We'll see if he enjoys the way Drake May throws him the football more than J. Hertz. And Miles Garrett goes to the Rams. You know, I've been thinking about this Miles Garrett trade since we talked about it early in the show. And I've got a couple of historical comparisons for it. But, you know, with the Eagles involved in the other big trade of the day, I mean, can you imagine if somehow Howie Roseman ended up dealing for Miles Garrett? Like Miles Garrett being on the trade block last year before he signed the big deal. and then this year no one really thought he would get traded.
Starting point is 00:44:32 There was the contract, you know, a maneuver that Cleveland made a month, two months ago to make it maybe a little bit easier for them to trade him, but still nobody expected it. But at least he's not going to Philadelphia or Talas. He's not going to the division. He is going to a team in the conference. And the Rams, man, they just do it a different way. way. They don't think about the future much. They really don't. They go for it. And one of the reasons they go for it is they feel like they're in position to go for it because they have an elite
Starting point is 00:45:09 NFL quarterback in Matt Stafford. And let's face it, you know, even before Stafford, they felt they were good enough at quarterback with Jared Goff to go for it with golf. Since Sean McVeigh, Les Sneed, et cetera, have teamed up, I mean, this has been a teamed. team that I think believes that the NFL is such a dynamic product. It just changes so much that you can't count on a rebuild. You can't count on what we do this year and next year might lead to something three years down the road. Every season is its own unwrapped entity, and they treat it as such, and they treat it as if why not us every single
Starting point is 00:45:57 year? It makes it easier to maneuver that way, to roster build that way when you have Matt Stafford at quarterback. That's the part of it that, you know, most teams don't have. And so you don't have that luxury. I think Washington has it.
Starting point is 00:46:16 And I liked what they did in this offseason. I mean, we'll find out when they start playing the games. I mean, I think they were aggressive. I mean, in terms of the players that they signed, the money that they spent, I mean, they were very aggressive comparatively. But yeah, I think that that mindset, when you have the quarterback, you should be taking advantage of that. Every year you should consider yourself to be a contender if you've got an elite level quarterback. And the Rams do, and that's an incredible trade. Now, two things.
Starting point is 00:46:48 One, the June 1st date, I think most of you know the significance of the June 1st. first date. If you make a trade before June 1st during the NFL's calendar, which starts in March, ends in really after the Super Bowl or, you know, the day before March, whatever it is, where the new league calendar begins. But if you make a trade or you release a player, June 1st becomes a significant date from a salary cap management standpoint. If you trade a player prior to June 1st, you have to take the entire dead cap number for that player that you traded in the upcoming season. If you wait until after June 1st or after 4 p.m. on June 1st, you can spread that dead cap hit over two seasons, which is why A.J. Brown didn't get traded until after 4 p.m.
Starting point is 00:47:47 today. It's why Miles Garrett, I'm sure even though the reports were out prior to 4 p.m., I'm assuming that it won't be actually officially registered with the league until after 4 p.m. So the Browns can spread that hit out over two years if they choose. Now, with a player that's released, you can release the player pre-June 1st and designate it as a post-June 1 release, if you'd like, you cannot do that with trades. as it relates to Brandon Ayyuk. I know that there's a lot of conversation out there from people who say, well, the 49ers
Starting point is 00:48:25 are just going to wait until June 1st to, you know, cut him or trade him so that they can spread the dead cap hit out over two years. Well, first of all, with him, they've voided so much of the deal. I actually can't tell you right now off the top of my head what that dead cap
Starting point is 00:48:43 hit will be. But here's the thing. They're going to be able to trade them. I really just don't see that happening personally. But if it did, it can happen now, and it's more advantageous for them. But if they wanted to release him prior to June 1st, they could have done that with a post-June 1st designation. I think the 49ers are going to hold on to him until, you know, they've exhausted not only him, but they've put the acquiring team, whoever picks him up off waivers as a as a free agent when he gets released. at a disadvantage because they didn't have them for the entire offseason.
Starting point is 00:49:22 They feel like they have no duty on their end to do him any favors. I'd be surprised if they just outright released him before training camp began and enabled him and his new team to somehow be together for a much longer period of time. I mean, especially if Washington is the destination, I mean, they're in the NFC. They play Washington this year. The 49ers do. Why give Brandon Ayuk to a competitor with plenty of time to prepare for the season?
Starting point is 00:49:59 If it were my team, if the 49ers were my team, I'd be saying don't cut him until you've exhausted every trade possibility. Somebody could get desperate during training camp, but you don't need to do him a favor the way he's handled this situation, and you don't have to do any competing team a favor. Now, the Miles Garrett trade. If you look back at like the biggest trades of defensive players in modern NFL history, Parsons to the Packers last year, you know, right before the season began, Dallas got back two first rounders and Kenny Clark. And then remember, Green Bay had to pay Parsons.
Starting point is 00:50:39 Miles Garrett is coming with contract in hand. He got paid before last off. season. So the Cowboys got back two firsts and Kenny Clark. Miles Garrett brought back Jared Verst, a two-time pro bowler in his first two seasons. Jared Verst is a beast. I mean, he is going to be for years to come. It would appear one of the better pass rushers in the league. So I think the Browns considered Jared Verse to be more valuable than say a second first round pick. I don't know if they had the option of either or. Remember, the Rams likely to pick very late next year. So if the Browns took their first rounder next year, it would probably be very
Starting point is 00:51:22 late in the first round. Jared Verse, as a player entering his third season, is, you know, probably more of a, well, it's a much safer bet than a late first rounder. So they get essentially a first rounder in Jared Verse. They also get a first rounder next year in the draft. The Rams first rounder next year. So they're already getting that. So the other, the second first would have been in 2028, which would have also been construed as a pick that likely will be later in the draft. The Rams look like they're going to be good as long as Matt Stafford is around. And I think he just signed an extension to play through the 2027 season. So Jared Verse, another first round pick. So that's kind of the equivalent of two first rounders.
Starting point is 00:52:09 They also got a second round pick and a third round pick. That's a more lucrative package than what Dallas got back. Kenny Clark is not at this point anywhere near as valuable as Jared Verse. Kenny Clark's very good. Jared versus Upside is a super young player and a dynamic pass rusher is much higher. So I would rate the Garrett Hall for Cleveland a little bit ahead of Dallas's Hall. Now, the trade that you've got to go back and look at to get, you know, really close to this one for Garrett is the Kaleel Mack trade by the Raiders to the Bears in 2018. The Raiders got back two
Starting point is 00:52:50 first rounders, a third rounder, and a sixth rounder for Mack. The Bears got back in return, not only Kaleel Mack, but a second rounder from the Raiders and a fifth rounder. So if you take that second and fifth that more than covers the third and the sixth that you had to give up. So now you're talking about basically two firsts and really you got the benefit of the second and the fifth over the third and the six. So it's more like a first and, you know, a late, late first early second in net in terms of that trade. So that, you know, looks, you know, in terms of all of the picks that were involved like, and it was a wow deal for the time, but I still think Miles Garrett to the Rams brought back more for the Browns. Now, the Bears did have to pay Mack. They did, and the Packers did have to pay Parsons, so that factored into the deal.
Starting point is 00:53:51 Durel Revis got traded to Tampa by the Jets in 2013, and the Jets got back a first and a fourth. So that's not comparable either. Those are the big defensive trades. Obviously, if the Max Crosby deal had held up, that would have been a big one. Two firsts, rounders for Crosby that the Ravens would have given up. But obviously they overturned that deal because of the medical. But I think Miles Garrett to the Rams is going to go down as the biggest trade for a defensive player in NFL history. It's close with the Parsons deal.
Starting point is 00:54:26 It's close with the Khalil Mack deal. But I mean, essentially, Jared Verse is more of a known and a safer bet than a first-round pick, certainly one in 2028. So they basically get back two first rounders a second and a third. Man, the Rams with Miles Garrett. Wow. Can you imagine if the Browns had said, yeah, we don't want Jaredverse. We'll take your first rounder in 2028. And the Rams had had Jared verse and Miles Garrett next year. Man, the Rams are awfully good. Again, my bookie, odds on the Rams to win the Super Bowl dropped from plus 850 to plus 600 after the trade. The Seahawks went from plus 900 to plus 1100 is the second pick to win the Super Bowl. So the Rams are, you know, a pretty
Starting point is 00:55:20 hefty favorite right now, you know, doesn't mean much in the NFL as we know. Every year is, you know, contingent on a lot of things. It can't be predicted before the season begins. But the Rams are a solid 2026 favorite to win the Super Bowl. And that team is going to be nasty. Think about the defense. Look, if you go back to the end of last year, the Rams had issues on defense after being a very good defensive team early in the season.
Starting point is 00:55:49 They really tailed off later in the season. And then their special teams were a disaster. Now you've added Trent McDuffie in a trade with the Chiefs, and you've added Miles Garrett in the offseason in a trade with the Browns. Rams, wow, what a team they appear to have. They will come to Northwest Field for a 1 p.m. kick on Sunday, November 8th. So Miles Garrett is on the schedule for Washington this year. All right, what else did I have here?
Starting point is 00:56:27 Oh, I wanted to talk about the giants. Have you seen the number of injuries that they've had during OTAs? Yes, this is real OTA news people. Jaden Daniels throwing a seam route to Chigacanquo in seven-on-seven in shorts is not real news. Injuries are real and the giants have been hit hard with injuries during OTAQ. and they've gotten some bad news on existing injuries. Now, they're doing something about it today, and I'll get to that in a moment. But just to give you kind of what's happened to them over the last couple of weeks,
Starting point is 00:57:09 they just lost Gunner Olshevsky, a return man, a wide receiver to a non-contact OTA injury, done for the year. Remember, about a week and a half ago, they lost Roy Robertson Harris. He was going to be the replacement for Dexter Lawrence. he's done for the year, non-contact OTA injury. They lost another undrafted corner. Thaddeus Dixon, I think they lost to a non-contact injury. But they've also gotten bad news on Malik Neighbors on Darius Slayton.
Starting point is 00:57:44 Neighbors, by the way, has had multiple surgeries now on the torn ACL and the meniscus. And there are people that think it's not looking good for 2020. for truly one of the elite talents in the league at wide receiver. Slayton's got some, you know, things going on as well in his injury recovery. Now, the Giants have been very active. Guess who they signed today? OBJ, Odell Beckham, Jr., going back to the team that he started his career with, the New York Football Giants.
Starting point is 00:58:23 He was a first round pick back in the 2014, draft picked 12th overall out of, of course, LSU, wide receivers, played five years with the Giants. It was certainly a major factor in the Rams run to a Super Bowl win in 2021. Last year played with the Dolphins, had just nine catches in nine games. OBJ going back to the Giants to likely finish up his career. they also signed today Braxton Berrios to a one-year deal and Ju-Jew Smith Schuster. There's also news relating to the Giants that Russell Wilson is going to retire. He's finalizing a deal to become a CBS sports analyst, that according to Adam Schaefter.
Starting point is 00:59:18 So the Giants have had some real kind of OTA-related news. and interesting because there are a lot of people that think the Giants are super underrated. They love the roster. I like their roster a lot. I do, but I don't love the quarterback. Speaking of the quarterback, you know what? I'm going to make a note right now.
Starting point is 00:59:39 Jackson Dart with Tommy tomorrow. Also, the Nats PR guy with Tommy tomorrow. I did read that story while I was away. So I've got some stuff that I'm saving for tomorrow's show when I'll be a little bit more rested and ready to roll throwing this one together today having just gotten back a little bit earlier. By the way, I'm sitting here with the TV on in studio and Francis Tiafo, College Park, Maryland ranked 19th in the world, just blew a two, up two breaks in the fourth set up, two sets to one, just blew that five two two break.
Starting point is 01:00:23 lead and it's 5-5 in the fourth set. I believe he's the last American standing, male or female, at the French Open. That would be a huge get for Tiafo if he can get to the quarterfinals at the French because the French right now, with Cinner Out, with Alcatraz not playing, Djokovic gone, it's kind of wide open. In Tiafo, you know, Tiafo could make a run here. He's played two five-set matches already. Hopefully this one won't go to a fifth, but he has blown an opportunity to kind of sail into the quarterfinals with, which should have been an easy, not easy match, but the fourth set he was cruising in until moments ago. All right, I think that's it. Everything else that I haven't talked about in terms of the stuff that I missed or anything that I
Starting point is 01:01:18 missed from today, we will get to tomorrow. when Tommy joins me. All right, that's it. Back tomorrow.
